Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday (Oct 11) said that Kyiv is ready to stop strikes on Russian oil refineries if Moscow halts strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. In a post on X, Zelensky said any move to reduce attacks must be mutual and backed by credible guarantees. He said rescue operations had concluded in Zaporizhzhia, where 23 people, including four children, were killed. He also said that a medical facility in Kharkiv was attacked while a five-storey apartment building in Slovyansk was damaged, where people may still have been trapped under the rubble. The Ukrainian president said that Russia had used around 1,450 aerial bombs, 75 missiles and more than 1,640 attack drones in a single week. He added that Kyiv would continue talks with European leaders to secure additional military assistance, particularly air defence systems and ammunition for combat aircraft.“Today, we will continue coordinating with partners – there will be talks with European leaders. Virtually every day, we coordinate at different levels and work on additional defense packages, first and foremost air defense and munitions for combat aircraft. All of this is to protect the lives of our people and Ukraine’s interests,” he said.

Trump pressures Kyiv over oil refinery attacks
Zelensky’s offer comes amid growing friction between Washington and Kyiv over Ukraine’s strikes on Russian oil infrastructure, which Kyiv has used to undermine Moscow’s ability to finance and sustain its war effort. On Saturday (Oct 10), Trump called for Ukraine to elect a new president willing to negotiate an end to the conflict, while warning Zelensky against targeting Russian refineries.“He better damn well stop,” Trump said, adding that “it's time for Ukraine to get a new president”.The US president’s remarks came as Washington pursued an arrangement involving Russian diesel supplies amid rising fuel prices ahead of the November 3 US midterm elections. Zelensky has criticised the easing of restrictions on Russian diesel exports, arguing that it could benefit Moscow without securing concessions.According to an Axios report, US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner had also raised the possibility of limiting intelligence-sharing with Ukraine if the refinery attacks continued. A US official denied that a threat had been made.

US envoy Steve Witkoff and fellow emissary Jared Kushner held “important” talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday (Sep 6). The discussions aimed to revive Washington’s efforts to end the war with Russia. The meeting marked their first visit to Kyiv, a day after discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.“We've had a very meaningful discussion, substantive, important, and we are very encouraged and we look forward to continuing this as long as it takes,” Witkoff said after meeting Zelensky.Kushner said the delegation had learned from the trip and hoped it would help advance peace efforts. “Hopefully this trip has come out with some new ways to advance forward. I think we've learned a lot from the trip,” he said.
European backing, no breakthrough
The talks took place alongside discussions involving British, French and German representatives. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday (Sep 4) said that a Russian drone struck the headquarters of Ukraine’s powerful SBU security service in central Kyiv, accusing Moscow of deliberately targeting the office of the agency’s acting chief. The strike hit the building on Volodymyrska Street, opposite the historic St Sophia Cathedral, marking the first reported attack on the SBU headquarters since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022.“Unfortunately, a Russian drone hit the central building of the SBU on Volodymyrska Street in Kyiv, opposite the St. Sophia Cathedral,” Zelensky said on Telegram. “The drone was aimed directly at the office of the head of the security service in that building.”Acting SBU chief Oleksandr Poklad was not near the building when the attack occurred and was unharmed, according to Ukrainian officials. The SBU said the headquarters would “certainly be restored”.
Kyiv vows retaliation
Zelensky said he had spoken with Poklad after the strike and instructed the security agency to prepare an “appropriate, tangible response”. He said Ukrainian authorities had already identified potential targets for retaliation, although the timing had yet to be decided.“The areas to be targeted have been identified. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday (Sep 27) said that Kyiv received a US-made Patriot air defence system from Israel a month earlier, adding that he is expecting to receive two more in the fall. Zelensky made the remarks while speaking at a press briefing after his return from the United Nations, where he met with US President Donald Trump and other senior officials of the US administration. He said that his meeting with the US president was “very good.”“The Israeli (Patriot) system is operating in Ukraine. It has been operating for a month. Unlike Kyiv’s Western allies, it has not pushed for sanctions against Moscow. However, its ties with Russia soured after Moscow showed support to Iran, with which Israel had a 12-day war over Tehran’s nuclear programme. The Kremlin has also condemned Israel’s war in Gaza. Meanwhile, the West has accused Iran of supplying drones to Russia, which it uses in its attacks against Ukraine.

France on Thursday (Sep 4) will host a meeting with 'the Coalition of the Willing,' a group of around 30 countries to discuss future security guarantees for Ukraine and to condemn Russia's continued refusal to engage in peace talks. Announcing the upcoming meeting on X, President Emmanuel Macron reiterated the nations', "Unity and determination in our support for Ukraine, and an unwavering will for peace". The French presidency said the session follows US-European consultations in Washington earlier this month. "Following the meeting held between Europeans and Americans in Washington on August 18, the heads of state and government will discuss the work on security guarantees for Ukraine conducted in recent weeks and will take stock of the consequences of Russia's persistent refusal to make peace," Macron's office said in a statement on Monday (Sep 1). A review of Russia's anti-peace stance In his post, Macron said that the leaders will review progress on plans to support Kyiv once a peace deal is reached, while also assessing the impact of Russia's resistance to negotiations. "Together with our partners, and in coordination with NATO, we will work to define robust security guarantees for Ukraine. These are a necessary prerequisite to move credibly towards peace." Here's how it's an 'upgrade' on R-360 Neptune "We will also review Russia’s stance, as it persists in its war of aggression and continues to reject peace." Thursday's meeting will focus on recent military planning and highlight the lack of progress since Trump met Russian President Vladimir Putin in August. Diplomats noted there has still been no direct contact between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. What is the 'Coalition of the Willing'? The so-called "coalition of the willing" was launched by France and Britain in February. It has been working on military options to help deter Russia from future aggression against Ukraine once a truce takes hold. However, those talks have slowed in recent months, with several governments arguing that any European contribution would require US backing. So far, Washington has given no firm commitments under President Donald Trump. The coalition includes EU states, as well as Turkey, Canada and Australia. According to reports, while his office has yet to confirm his presence, Zelensky is expected in Paris for the talks; most of the other leaders will join online. Citing sources, AFP reports that Trump is not expected to attend the meeting. However, Reuters reports that Washington will be briefed afterwards. On social media, Zelensky thanked President Emmanuel Macron for his "steadfast support" and called for a united response to Russia, "dragging their feet and prolonging the war". He later said he had spoken with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte about coordination, adding, "Russia has stolen from peace, brazenly taking away a significant part of this year. This autumn, we must do everything possible to strengthen our positions." https://www.wionews.com/videos/russia-ukraine-war-russia-turns-up-the-heat-approximately-1-245-ukrainian-troops-killed-in-a-day-1756748663487/embed
