President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia on Wednesday of plotting potentially catastrophic attacks on Ukrainian nuclear plants, in a defiant UN address in which he denounced bids to impose peace from the outside.

Zelensky sought to rally support among world leaders at their annual gathering in New York as his concerns grow, weeks before a US election that could sharply shift the stance of Ukraine's main backer.

Speaking from the UN rostrum in a black polo jacket, Zelensky said that Ukrainian intelligence has found that Russia is scanning the country's nuclear infrastructure by satellite.

Russian President Vladimir Putin "does seem to be planning attacks on our nuclear power plants and the infrastructure, aiming to disconnect the plants from the power grid," Zelensky said.

"Any critical incident in the energy system could lead to a nuclear disaster, a day like that must never come," Zelensky said.

"Moscow needs to understand this, and this depends in part on your determination to put pressure on the aggressor," he told the General Assembly.

Russia captured the giant Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant soon after its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Russia in recent weeks has been pounding Ukraine's electricity grid, in what Western and Ukrainian officials describe as an attempt to leave the country shivering during the winter.

Zelensky on Thursday will head to the White House to see President Joe Biden and present what he describes as a "victory plan" that shows a path forward for Ukraine.

In his UN address, Zelensky singled out China and Brazil as he questioned the "true interest" of countries that have been pressing Ukraine to negotiate with Russia.

Employing the language of the Global South, Zelensky said: "You will not boost your power at Ukraine's expense, and the world has already been through colonial wars and conspiracies of great powers at the expense of those who are small."

"Ukrainians will never accept -- will never accept -- why anyone in the world believes that such a brutal colonial past, which suits no one today, can be imposed on Ukraine now," Zelensky said.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told a Security Council session on Tuesday that diplomacy was the only solution.

Zelensky last year flew to the General Assembly in a dramatic first wartime appearance and, while he maintains star power, the political landscape has changed.

Donald Trump, running again for president, on Wednesday called Zelensky the "greatest salesman on Earth."

"Every time Zelensky comes to the United States, he walks away with $100 billion," Trump said, claiming "we're stuck in that war unless I'm president."

The United States has provided around $175 billion in both military and economic assistance to Ukraine since Russia invaded in February 2022, and Biden has ruled out sending troops.

Trump in the past has voiced admiration for Putin and, during his 2017-2021 presidency, was impeached for the first time over delaying aid to Ukraine to press Zelensky to dig up dirt on Biden.

Zelensky said he hoped to see Trump while in the United States and explain that the war is more complicated.

Zelensky has sharply criticised Trump's running mate, J D&nbsp;Vance, who has said bluntly that he does not care about Ukraine and that the United States should focus instead on confronting China.

“As of today, a new management team takes over the leadership of the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” said Zelensky named Colonel General Oleksandr Syrsky who was the head of Ukraine’s ground forces, as the new army chief.&nbsp;

The Ukrainian president also said that he met with Zaluzhny on Thursday and told him that the time had come for changes in the military leadership, but that Kyiv’s top general should remain “on his team”.&nbsp;

“I have offered General Zaluzhny to continue to be part of the team of the Ukrainian state. I would be grateful for his consent,” said Zelensky.

Zelensky’s dismissal of Ukraine’s top general is a big gamble as Zaluzhny’s ouster, known by some as the “Iron General,” could affect the morale of the troops fighting on the country’s 1,000-kilometre frontline.&nbsp;

Zaluzhny also remains popular in Ukraine as under him Ukrainian forces retook almost half of Russia-occupied regions in Ukraine in 2022. Additionally, polling surveys, as per Reuters, put the public’s trust in the top general at over 90 per cent.&nbsp;

Emergency workers worked overnight to look for survivors in the rubble of what remained of the shattered Adriatic Restaurant on Moskovska Street, where according to the Russian officials, a bakery had been set up for civilians.&nbsp;

Leonid Pasechnik, the Russian-installed head of the Luhansk region said that the bakery was crowded with civilians when it was struck. The Russian emergency ministry said 10 people had been pulled from the rubble alive.&nbsp;

“Search operations continue on the site of the collapsed bakery...28 people, including a child, have died,” the Russian emergency situations ministry said in a post on Telegram. According to officials, 18 men, nine women and one child were among those killed.&nbsp;

Additionally, four more people were in an “extremely grave condition,” said the ministry. Ukraine is yet to comment on the attack and allegations by Russia.&nbsp;

Pasechnik has declared a day of mourning in the Russian-held region and vowed retaliation against Ukraine.&nbsp;

<h2>Zelensky visits troops</h2>

The Ukrainian president visited the frontline village of Robotyne which was liberated late August.&nbsp;

The visit also comes amid reports that the Ukrainian government had informed the White House that it plans to fire the country’s army chief Valeriy Zaluzhnyi who is overseeing the war against Russian occupation forces.

During his visit, Zelensky also announced the appointment of the mayor of an occupied city who was once abducted by Russia as the new head of the country’s southern embattled Zaporizhzhia region, said his office on Sunday (Feb 4).&nbsp;

“The head of state introduced the newly appointed head of the Zaporizhzhia regional state administration Ivan Federov, who has been the mayor of the now temporarily occupied Melitopol since December 2020 and was in Russian captivity,” said the Ukrainian president’s office in a statement.&nbsp;

During his visit to&nbsp;Lithuania, the Ukrainian president spoke about how&nbsp;his country, facing renewed aerial attacks from Russia is lacking&nbsp;air-defence systems.&nbsp;

He also spoke about any&nbsp;delays in Western aid to Kyiv will&nbsp;embolden the Kremlin. "He (Russian President Vladimir Putin) is not going to stop. He wants to occupy us completely," said the Ukrainian president.&nbsp;

He added, "And sometimes, the insecurity of partners regarding financial and military aid to Ukraine only increases Russia's courage and strength."

“Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are our reliable friends and principled partners. Today, I arrived in Vilnius before going to Tallinn and Riga,” said Zelensky in a post on X upon his arrival in Vilnius.&nbsp;

Zelensky is also set to hold talks with his Lithuanian counterpart President Gitanas Nausėda, Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte, as well as lawmakers and people from the Ukrainian community in Lithuania.&nbsp;

“Security, EU and NATO integration, cooperation on electronic warfare and drones, and further coordination of European support are all on the agenda,” said the Ukrainian president.&nbsp;

According to Nauseda’s office, the presidents of both countries will hold talks and a joint press conference. The Ukrainian leader will also give a public speech.&nbsp;

<h2>First official trip abroad in 2024</h2>

The Baltic tour marks Zelensky’s first official trip abroad this year. The visit to the three countries also comes as other Kyiv allies in the West are hesitant to give the war-torn country more aid, nearly two years since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.&nbsp;

On Monday (Jan 8), German Chancellor Olaf Scholz blasted several countries in the 27-nation bloc for not delivering sufficient weapons to Ukraine amid its war with Russia.&nbsp;

He noted that with American military assistance to Ukraine stalled in the United States Congress, allies in the EU need to step up, reiterating that the German government would support Kyiv for as long as necessary.

While Berlin had faced criticism during the initial months of the invasion for failing to step up and provide military backing to Kyiv, it is now among the top providers of both weapons and financial aid to the war-torn country.&nbsp;

The deaths in the Ukrainian region follow incessant Russian shelling of Kherson&nbsp;city and the region over the preceding 24 hours, according to local officials. Reuters citing regional police said three people died in the shelling of an apartment building and a private home in Kherson city.&nbsp;

Additionally, a woman died in a drone attack in a small town south of Kherson and a second woman was killed when a town further north came under heavy fire. The attacks also partially cut gas and water supplies as well as hit a medical facility.&nbsp;

“The windows were broken, the building was damaged,” Oleksandr Tolokonnikov from Kherson’s regional military administration told the Ukrainian public broadcaster.&nbsp;

Around 600 kilometres northeast of Kherson in the town of Horlivka, in Ukraine’s Donetsk region under Russian control, one woman was killed and six others were injured following Ukrainian shelling, said a Russian-installed official.&nbsp;

Mayor of Horlivka, Ivan Prikhodko, in a post on Telegram, also said that the shelling destroyed a shopping centre and several other buildings.&nbsp;

<h2>Ukraine downs&nbsp;barrage of drones fired by Russia</h2>

According to the Ukrainian military, Russia launched 31 drones from Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014.&nbsp;

“As a result of air combat, the Ukrainian Air Force and defence forces destroyed 28 Shahed attack drones in Odesa, Kherson, Mykolaiv, Donetsk, Kirovohrad and Khmelnytskyi regions,” said Ukrainian Air Forces in a post on Telegram.&nbsp;

Debris from the downed drones damaged technical facilities in the Odesa port as well as an “inoperable administrative building and a warehouse,” said the Ukrainian forces.&nbsp;

The attack, according to the military, also led to a fire in a warehouse in the Kherson region. “No people were injured,” it added.

<h2>Moscow ‘will be defeated’</h2>

In what is being seen as a snub to Russia, Ukraine has decided to officially celebrate Christmas on December 25 this year. It will be the first time in over a century that Ukrainians will observe the festival in line with the Gregorian calendar and along with most of the world’s Christians.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed his nation on Sunday (Dec 24), Christmas Eve with a message of encouragement amid the ongoing war with Russia.&nbsp;

The whole country would pray together during the holidays “for our freedom. For our victory. For our Ukraine,” said Zelensky.&nbsp;

<h2>Ukraine received $1.34 billion under World Bank plan</h2>

Kyiv received $1.34 billion under the World Bank’s public expenditures for administrative capacity endurance in Ukraine, said the Ukrainian finance ministry, on Monday (Dec 25).&nbsp;

The financing consisted of a $1.086 billion loan from the World Bank, $190 million grant from Norway, $50 million grant from the United States and $20 million grant from Switzerland, said the ministry.&nbsp;

The funds, in part, will be used for non-security and defence-related expenditures like old-age social payments. 
 
“International financial assistance is a significant contribution to maintaining Ukraine’s financial and economic stability and allows us to provide priority social expenditures during the war,” said Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko.

Tricia McLaughlin, a spokesperson for Ramaswamy’s campaign, in an interview with the New York Times later clarified that he did not call Zelensky a Nazi, but was instead referring to an incident in the Canadian parliament back in September.&nbsp;

Vivek Ramaswamy calls Ukraine’s Zelensky ‘Nazi’ during GOP presidential debate; campaign clarifies remark

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday (Oct 31) warned against expecting rapid success in the country’s counteroffensive which aims to reclaim occupied land from Russia saying that Moscow’s forces are gearing up for a fresh wave of attacks in different parts of the frontline.&nbsp;

The remarks came as Zelensky has sought to rally his troops amid Kyiv’s gruelling months-long offensive. Meanwhile, several UN agencies addressed the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) about the humanitarian situation in Ukraine.&nbsp;

The UN human rights office (OCHA) said it has formally verified the death of 9,900 civilians in Ukraine after strikes on homes, schools, fields and markets, since the beginning of the Russian invasion in February 2022, adding that “the actual number is certainly higher.”

<h2>Don’t expect instant success: Zelensky</h2>

“We live in a world that gets used to success too quickly. When the full-scale invasion began, many people around the world did not believe that Ukraine would survive,” said the Ukrainian president in his nightly address.&nbsp;

“Glory to all those who do not retreat, who do not burn out, who believe in Ukraine just as they did on February 24, and who have been fighting unwaveringly.”

The Ukrainian offensive began in June and since then Kyiv has not reported much success on its vast frontline in the east and south, sparking criticism and impatience among some of the country’s allies in the West.&nbsp;

Zelensky also said that his troops have succeeded in diminishing Russia’s military strength in the Black Sea and that more support from his allies could lead to an ultimate Ukrainian victory over Russia.&nbsp;

“When we ensure even more security to the Black Sea, Russia will lose any ability to dominate in this area and expand its malign influence to other countries,” said the Ukrainian president. Russia often uses its fleet in the Black Sea to launch long-range strikes on Ukraine.&nbsp;

Sectors considered engulfed by the fiercest fighting in the east and northeast, include Avdiivka and Kupiansk – &nbsp;where Russia has been on the offensive in recent weeks – said Zelensky following a meeting with senior commanders.&nbsp;

A Dutch government spokesperson told AFP that Zelensky’s flight landed around midday (1000 GMT). Meanwhile, the Ukrainian president announced his and his wife&nbsp;Olena’s arrival in the Netherlands, on social media and said, “Olena and I arrived in the Netherlands with the team.”

During his surprise visit, Zelensky met with outgoing Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte at a Dutch military air base in Eindhoven.

The Ukrainian president on social media also said, “The main issue is F-16 for Ukraine to protect our people from Russian terror. We are getting stronger.” Speaking about the agenda, he said that it includes the Global Peace Summit and bringing Russia to justice.

<h2>Dutch PM rubber stamps delivery of F-16s to Ukraine</h2>

“The Netherlands and Denmark commit to transfer F-16s to Ukraine once the conditions for such a transfer have been met,” said the Dutch PM. He also said that the Netherlands has a total of 42 F-16s available, but it is too early to say whether all of them will be sent to Ukraine.&nbsp;

The Ukrainian president hailed the decision and called it “historic”. &nbsp;

“The third point for today is absolutely historic, powerful and inspiring for us,” said the Ukrainian president during a joint press conference with Rutte. He added, “This is another step towards strengthening Ukraine's air shield.”&nbsp;

Earlier, Zelensky&nbsp;also inspected F-16 fighter jets which he had hoped to receive from the Netherlands during a visit to a Dutch army base.&nbsp;

<h2>Ukraine’s air defence push</h2>

In recent months, the Netherlands, together with Denmark, has led international efforts to train Ukrainian pilots for F-16 fighter jets ahead of delivering the jets to help counter the Russian air superiority, amid Moscow’s ongoing war in Kyiv.&nbsp;

According to the Ukrainian president, the planes would help strengthen Ukraine’s air defences and help its counter-offensive.&nbsp;

“We are speaking about air defence, because we have the winter ahead of us and we understand more than anyone else in the world what winter without electricity is like,” said Zelensky, in the Netherlands.&nbsp;

<h2>Zelensky’s visit to Denmark</h2>

Hours after the meeting with the Dutch PM in the Netherlands, Zelensky landed at Skrydstrup airbase in southern Denmark, at around 1430 GMT, reported AFP.&nbsp;

The Ukrainian president was greeted by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen and Defence Minister Jakob Ellemann-Jensen.

Frederiksen reaffirmed support for Ukraine and said it is ready to do so “for as long as necessary.” She also said that Denmark will deliver 19 jets in total, with the first six due to be shipped to Ukraine around New Year.&nbsp;

This will be followed by eight in 2024 and five the following year, she added. “We know that your freedom is our freedom. We also know that you need more” weapons, said Frederiksen during a joint press conference with Zelensky.&nbsp; 
 
The Danish PM said over 70 Ukrainian military officials had arrived in Denmark for training. Ukraine said that it expects several dozens of pilots to be trained but it was not immediately clear how many pilots had arrived in Denmark.

A couple of days after the United States approved sending F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine from Denmark and the Netherlands, Kyiv announced training had begun for Ukrainian pilots on operating the planes.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Pope Francis called for Russia to reverse its decision on the Black Sea grain deal.&nbsp;

Hours after the two office blocks were damaged and one person was injured in a night-time Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow, Zelensky said, “Today is the 522nd day of the so-called ‘Special Military Operation’, which the Russian leadership thought would last a couple of weeks.”

“Gradually, the war is returning to the territory of Russia – to its symbolic centres and military bases, and this is an inevitable, natural and absolutely fair process,” Zelensky, who was in the midst of a visit to the western Ukrainian city of Ivano-Frankivsk, added.&nbsp;

“Ukraine is getting stronger,” said the Ukrainian president.&nbsp;

<h2>Russian attacks on Ukrainian power grids?</h2>

However, Zelensky also warned that Kyiv expects Moscow to resume its attacks on Ukraine’s energy system once cold weather returns later this year.&nbsp;

Nearly 40 per cent of the Ukrainian energy system was damaged in Russian missile and drone strikes over the past winter, according to a report by Reuters, the attacks had plunged Ukrainian cities into darkness and cold.&nbsp;

Kyiv has since alleged that the attacks targeting its energy grids were a deliberate strategy to harm civilians and called it a war crime. However, Moscow said that the attacks were launched to reduce Ukraine’s ability to fight.

“It is obvious that this fall and...in the winter the enemy will try to repeat the terror against the Ukrainian energy industry. We should be ready for this in any case,” said Zelensky, while addressing senior government, security, and regional officials.&nbsp;

“At the government and security level, we will do everything possible,” he added. The Ukrainian government security officials and energy workers were working to protect the energy system from physical damage, sabotage or cyberattacks, said Zelensky, as per Reuters.&nbsp; 
 
However, every city and town across Ukraine must prepare to handle energy sector emergencies, he added.&nbsp;

The attack damaged two office towers and briefly shut down an international airport. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin took to Telegram and said no one suffered injuries and reported “slight damage” to the facades of two city office towers.

During his weekly Angelus message, on Sunday (July 30), Pope Francis called on Russia to reverse its decision on the Black Sea grain deal. “I appeal to my brothers, the authorities of the Russian Federation, so that the Black Sea initiative may be resumed and grain may be transported safely,” said Francis. He also urged the crowd gathered at St Peter’s Square to continue praying “for martyred Ukraine, where war is destroying everything, even grain,” calling this “a grave insult to God.”&nbsp;

The pope also said that the “cry of millions of brothers and sisters who are suffering from hunger is rising up to the sky.” The Ukrainian president took to X, formerly known as Twitter and welcomed Francis’ remarks.&nbsp;

“The reaction of the world’s religious leaders to the Russian missile terror and destruction of Ukrainian agricultural products is extremely important to protect the whole world, and especially the peoples of Africa and Asia, who suffer the most from the threat of hunger, from a food crisis,” Zelensky wrote on the microblogging platform.&nbsp;

‘War’ is coming to Russia, says Ukraine’s Zelensky after Moscow drone attack

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky sacked the country's ambassador to the United Kingdom, Vadym Prystaiko, on Friday, after he denounced the president's response to a row over British military aid.

Prystaiko had condemned Zelensky's sarcastic remarks to suggestions that came from British Defence Minister Ben Wallace that Ukraine should exhibit more gratitude for the arms and ammunition supplied by its allies.&nbsp;

Zelensky, in a decree that was published on the presidential website, signed the dismissal of Prystaiko. It did not cite the reason for banishment.

<h2>British Defence Secretary Ben Wallace warns Ukraine its allies are 'not Amazon'</h2>

The row began this month at the NATO summit in Vilnius when Wallace said in a press briefing that Britain was 'not an Amazon delivery service' for Ukraine and that Kyiv could express more "gratitude".

Wallace warned that Ukraine had to persuade US lawmakers and "doubting politicians in other countries that it's worth it", and that "whether we like it or not, people want to see gratitude".

Wallace, who was speaking on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Lithuania, while answering a question from a reporter about Zelensky's complaints that Kyiv had not been given a timeline for joining the alliance, recalled the time when he was handed over a shopping list of weapons during his visit to Ukraine.

"You know, we're not Amazon," he said, referring to the giant American tech and retail company. "I told them that last year when I drove 11 hours to be given a list."

The United Kingdom has been one of Kyiv's most persistent supporters since Russia's attack last year. It is the major donor of weapons and trains the Ukrainian troops. PM Rishi Sunak had also released a statement earlier saying that Britain and its allies will increase their support for Ukraine.

<h2>Zelensky says did not understand Wallace's comments</h2>

While responding to Wallace's comments at a press conference, Zelensky said, "We were always grateful to the UK, prime ministers and the minister of defence because the people are always supporting us," he said.

"I didn't know what he meant and how else we should be grateful. Maybe the minister wants something special but we have wonderful relations."

When asked about Wallace's comments, Sunak said that Zelensky had been grateful for the support given so far and that more support would be forthcoming as required.

The NATO-organised talks between the two countries will take place a day, on Monday, ahead of the military alliance’s leadership summit in the Lithuanian capital city of Vilnius. “On Tuesday in the leadership summit to be held in Vilnius, we will be discussing (Turkey’s concerns) with our partners. We will make the best decision, whatever it is,” said Erdogan.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, NATO chief Stoltenberg, on Friday said there are still “gaps” to be bridged between Turkey and Sweden before the former can give its go ahead for the latter’s membership bid. Addressing a press conference ahead of next week’s summit, Stoltenberg said again he would meet Swedish and Turkish leaders a day before the gathering officially starts on July 11-12.&nbsp;

The Ukrainian president who is in the midst of visiting several NATO states, drummed up support for its membership bid. Zelensky travelled to the Czech Republic and Slovakia a day after holding talks in Bulgaria. He is also due to visit Istanbul and meet his Turkish counterpart, later on Friday.&nbsp;

While he was in Slovakia, Zelensky on Friday called on NATO to resolve the issue of Sweden and Ukraine’s membership bid and said that the indecision is a “threat” to global security. “I think there is not enough unity on this,” said Zelensky, during a press conference. He added, “This is a threat to the strength of the alliance…is (also) very important for the security of the whole world.”&nbsp;

Kyiv is also expecting some “positive results or at least some steps towards the positive outcome” from the upcoming summit in Vilnius, said the Ukrainian president. Zelensky also said the “situation with the aggressor, with Russia depends on this,” as Moscow is “counting on the world to show weakness and disunity in the Alliance, and this cannot be allowed.”&nbsp;

Zelensky has won a pledge of support for Ukraine to join NATO “as soon as the war (with Russia) is over,” from the Czech Republic. Additionally, Slovakia said the question of Kyiv’s membership was “when,” not “if”.&nbsp;

This comes as Stoltenberg reiterated that Ukraine would become a member but the alliance remains divided over how fast should Kyiv’s inclusion happen while others are concerned about provoking Russia. While Zelensky has acknowledged that they cannot join the alliance while the war with Russia is still going on, Kyiv needs “a clear signal, some concrete things in the direction of an invitation,” said the Ukrainian president, on Thursday.&nbsp;

Turkey remains indecisive on Sweden’s NATO bid; Stoltenberg to bridge ‘gaps’ between countries

The second European Political Community summit began in Moldova, the neighbouring country of&nbsp;war-torn Ukraine, on Thursday (June 1) which saw the participation of 47 leaders from the 27-nation bloc, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky who said that Kyiv wanted to receive a “clear” decision on its future in NATO during the military alliance’s leaders' meet which will take place in July in Vilnius.&nbsp;

<h2>Ukraine about its NATO bid</h2>

Addressing the summit of European leaders in Moldova, the Ukrainian president said that he wanted to receive a “clear” decision about the war-torn country’s bid to join the military alliance during the upcoming meeting which will be held in Lithuania.&nbsp;

“This year is for decisions. In summer in Vilnius at the NATO summit, a clear invitation to the members of Ukraine is needed and the security guarantees on the way to NATO membership are needed,” said Zelensky. He added, “On our accession to the EU a clear, positive decision is needed.”&nbsp;

The Ukrainian president also spoke about Kyiv’s preparation for the Peace Summit to “guide the world to jointly implement” the 10-point peace plan proposed by Zelensky, which entails the full withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine.&nbsp;

<h2>Why is the summit being held in Moldova?</h2>

The summit of over 40 leaders from the EU’s 27 nations was held at Mimi Castle in southern Moldovan wine country which is some 20 kilometres away from Ukraine and also near to the Russian-backed, breakaway Transdniestria region of Moldova.&nbsp;

The decision to host the summit in Moldova is being seen as a symbolic show of support for Kyiv and Chisinau.&nbsp;

The summit is also&nbsp;taking place with&nbsp;NATO Airborne Warning and Control Systems (AWACS) surveillance planes flying over the former Soviet republic of 2.5 million people. Notably, Moldova, whose President Maia Sandu, a pro-Western leader has sought EU membership, shut its airspace except for official delegation planes.&nbsp;

Notably, Moldova has witnessed missile debris multiple times since the beginning of the Russian invasion. “The presence of these leaders in our country is a clear message that Moldova is not alone and neither is our neighbour Ukraine, which for a year and three months has been standing against the barbaric invasion of Russia,” said the Moldovan president.&nbsp;

In addition to the ongoing war in Ukraine, the EU leaders are also expected to discuss issues like ethnic tensions in Kosovo as well as peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan.&nbsp;

France and Germany are also expected to host a round table involving the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan in an effort to broker a peace deal between the two countries, during the summit in Moldova.&nbsp;

<h2>Moldova and Ukraine</h2>

While in Moldova, the Ukrainian president urged the international community to put concrete “security guarantees” in place for Kyiv and its neighbouring Moldova amid threats from&nbsp;Russia. Zelensky also indicated that he would talk to “partner countries” about a possible “air jets coalition” and providing Patriot missiles, which are used by the United States and its allies.

The Ukrainian president said that “security guarantees are very important” for both Kyiv and Chisinau citing “Russia, their aggressions in Ukraine and potential aggression in other parts of Europe.” Notably, Moldova, like Ukraine, applied to join the EU last year shortly after the Russian invasion.&nbsp;

“We support Moldova and its people who are integrating into the EU. You supported our people, our refugees who fled in the first days of the war, and we will never forget it,” said Zelensky standing beside Sandu while addressing the press.&nbsp;

Prior to the summit, Zelensky also said that he met with his Moldovan counterpart&nbsp;during which they discussed “strengthening cooperation between our countries and counter the challenges posed by Russia together.”&nbsp;

Zelensky joins European leaders summit in Moldova, asks for ‘clear’ decision on NATO membership

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who is in the midst of a visit to Africa, on Tuesday (May 30) accused the West of “supporting genocide” in Kyiv over its backing of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s peace plan. Lavrov claims that because of it, “everything Russian” would be destroyed in east Ukraine and Crimea.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, top Ukrainian presidential aid in a recent interview said Kyiv is&nbsp;no longer interested in a ceasefire and&nbsp;Zelensky’s peace plan is the only way to end Russia’s war.

<h2>What did Lavrov say?</h2>

The Russian foreign minister during a press conference with his Burundian counterpart said, “The conclusion is very simple - the West directly supports genocide.” This comes as Moscow has long accused the West of what it calls Ukrainian persecution of Russian language speakers in the eastern Donbas region and elsewhere.

The peace plan proposed&nbsp;by Zelensky late last year calls for the withdrawal of Russian forces from all Ukrainian territory including the Crimean peninsula, which Moscow&nbsp;annexed in 2014. In the context of the recent drone attacks in Moscow, Lavrov also accused the West of directly helping Kyiv conduct such “terrorist” strikes by providing it with military equipment.&nbsp;

“The statement of the West that the weapons it is supplying (to Ukraine) must not be used against the territory of the Russian Federation is just another lie,” said the Russian foreign minister. Notably, Moscow has also claimed that US-provided armoured vehicles were used during the border incursion in Russia’s Belgorod&nbsp;earlier this month.&nbsp;

US Army General Mark Milley, addressing Moscow’s accusations of pro-Ukrainian militia using armoured vehicles to carry out the border incursion, said Washington has long asked Kyiv not to use US-provided military equipment for attacks inside Russian territory.&nbsp;

<h2>Russia blames the West for Kyiv's 'reckless'&nbsp;drone attacks on Moscow</h2>

The Russian foreign ministry in a statement, on Tuesday, blamed Western support of&nbsp;Ukraine and said that it was “pushing” Kyiv towards “increasingly reckless” behaviour in reference to the recent drone attacks in Moscow. They also went on to say that these attacks are designed to spread “panic”.&nbsp;

“Western support for the Kyiv regime is pushing the Ukrainian leadership towards increasingly reckless acts, including terrorism”. Russia has also said that it intercepted all eight of the Ukrainian drones aimed at Moscow and said there were no deaths but two injuries were reported. Moscow said that it has launched a probe into the incident.&nbsp;

Russian lawmaker Maxim Ivanov called it the most serious assault on Moscow since the Nazis, saying no citizen could now avoid “the new reality”. Meanwhile, Ukrainian presidential aide Mykhailo Podolyak denied Kyiv’s involvement in the attack.&nbsp;

<h2>Ukraine’s peace plan the only way to end conflict: Zelensky’s aide</h2>

In an interview with Reuters, chief diplomatic adviser Ihor Zhovkva said that Ukraine is no longer interested in a ceasefire and said that Zelensky’s peace plan is the only way to end Russia’s war. Zhovkva also said that the time for mediation efforts has passed.&nbsp;

The Ukrainian presidential aid also pushed back on multiple peace plans pitched by China, Brazil, the Vatican and South Africa over the past couple of months and told Reuters, “There cannot be a Brazilian peace plan, a Chinese peace plan, a South African peace plan when you are talking about the war in Ukraine”.&nbsp;

He also spoke about how Ukraine’s 10-point peace plan received an extremely positive reaction&nbsp;at the Group of Seven (G7) summit held in Japan, earlier this month, which was also attended by Zelensky. “Not a single formula (point) had any concerns from the (G7) countries,” said Zhovkva, as per Reuters.&nbsp;

The presidential aide also said Ukraine wants G7 leaders to help bring as many Global South leaders as possible to a Ukraine-proposed ‘peace summit’ this summer. Japan, which currently holds the G7 presidency&nbsp;also invited leaders from the so-called Global South to Hiroshima for talks including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

The Russian foreign minister during a press conference with his Burundian counterpart said, “The conclusion is very simple - the West directly supports genocide.” This comes as Moscow has long accused the West of what it calls Ukrainian persecution of Russian language speakers in the eastern Donbas region and elsewhere. The peace plan proposed by Zelensky late last year calls for the withdrawal of Russian forces from all Ukrainian territory including the Crimean peninsula, which Moscow annexed in 2014. In the context of the recent drone attacks in Moscow, Lavrov also accused the West of directly helping Kyiv conduct such “terrorist” strikes by providing it with military equipment. “The statement of the West that the weapons it is supplying (to Ukraine) must not be used against the territory of the Russian Federation is just another lie,” said the Russian foreign minister. Notably, Moscow has also claimed that US-provided armoured vehicles were used during the border incursion in Russia’s Belgorod earlier this month. US Army General Mark Milley, addressing Moscow’s accusations of pro-Ukrainian militia using armoured vehicles to carry out the border incursion, said Washington has long asked Kyiv not to use US-provided military equipment for attacks inside Russian territory. They also went on to say that these attacks are designed to spread “panic”. “Western support for the Kyiv regime is pushing the Ukrainian leadership towards increasingly reckless acts, including terrorism”. Russia has also said that it intercepted all eight of the Ukrainian drones aimed at Moscow and said there were no deaths but two injuries were reported. Moscow said that it has launched a probe into the incident. Russian lawmaker Maxim Ivanov called it the most serious assault on Moscow since the Nazis, saying no citizen could now avoid “the new reality”. Meanwhile, Ukrainian presidential aide Mykhailo Podolyak denied Kyiv’s involvement in the attack. Ukraine’s peace plan the only way to end conflict: Zelensky’s aide In an interview with Reuters, chief diplomatic adviser Ihor Zhovkva said that Ukraine is no longer interested in a ceasefire and said that Zelensky’s peace plan is the only way to end Russia’s war. Zhovkva also said that the time for mediation efforts has passed. The Ukrainian presidential aid also pushed back on multiple peace plans pitched by China, Brazil, the Vatican and South Africa over the past couple of months and told Reuters, “There cannot be a Brazilian peace plan, a Chinese peace plan, a South African peace plan when you are talking about the war in Ukraine”. He also spoke about how Ukraine’s 10-point peace plan received an extremely positive reaction at the Group of Seven (G7) summit held in Japan, earlier this month, which was also attended by Zelensky. “Not a single formula (point) had any concerns from the (G7) countries,” said Zhovkva, as per Reuters. The presidential aide also said Ukraine wants G7 leaders to help bring as many Global South leaders as possible to a Ukraine-proposed ‘peace summit’ this summer. Japan, which currently holds the G7 presidency also invited leaders from the so-called Global South to Hiroshima for talks including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Indonesian President Joko Widodo. The Italian PM’s visit comes amid the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine and days before the conflict will mark its first anniversary.&nbsp;

Meloni, who took office in October, last year has been a firm supporter of Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict despite disputes over the issue within her right-wing ruling coalition and divided public opinion. Earlier this month, Italy and France said that they have finalised technical talks for the joint delivery of a SAMP/T-MAMBA air defence system to Kyiv in the spring of this year. The European-made defence system is said to be the only one that can intercept ballistic missiles. Additionally, it can also track dozens of targets and intercept 10 at the same time.&nbsp;

On Friday, European People’s Party (EPP) cancelled a planned event in Naples after former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi criticised Ukraine. Notably, Berlusconi’s party Forza Italia, which he leads, is a member of EPP as well as Meloni’s ruling coalition. The comments in question include the former Italian PM saying that he would not meet Zelensky if he were still in power as he blames the Ukrainian President for the ongoing conflict with Russia.&nbsp;

He also said, “So I judge, very, very negatively, the behaviour of this gentleman” referring to Zelensky. Days after which EPP President Manfred Weber, in a tweet said, “Following the remarks by Silvio Berlusconi on Ukraine we decided to cancel our study days in Naples. Support for Ukraine is not optional”.&nbsp;

He added that this should “immediately be put on the agenda of the EPP's next meetings.” The event in question included EPP’s European parliamentary lawmakers who were due to convene in Naples in June for a discussion of strategy. The decision also sparked criticism from Forza Italia’s leadership.

Italian PM Meloni to visit Ukrainian President Zelensky in Kyiv on Monday: Report

In a recent interview, Ukraine’s presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said that Kyiv and its Western allies are in the midst of negotiating for long-range missiles and fighter jets to push back Russian forces. The top aide to President Volodymyr Zelensky also spoke about how their Western allies have been “conservative” about arms deliveries as they fear changes in the “international architecture”&nbsp;amid the ongoing conflict, reported the Associated Press. &nbsp;

“To drastically reduce the Russian army’s key weapon — the artillery they use today on the front lines — we need missiles that will destroy their depots,”&nbsp;said Podolyak to the country’s Freedom channel, as per Reuters. This comes after Washington and Berlin along with several other European countries announced that they would send their advanced battle tanks, German-made Leopard 2 tanks and US-made M1 Abrams to Ukraine.

In reference to Russia’s weapon depots, the Ukrainian top aide claimed that there were more than 100 artillery warehouses in the Moscow-occupied Crimean Peninsula. “We need to work with this. We must show (our partners) the real picture of this war,”&nbsp;said the Ukrainian official, without mentioning any particular countries.&nbsp;

Secondly, negotiations are proceeding at an accelerated pace.”&nbsp;

In his evening video address, Zelensky said, “Ukraine needs long-range missiles...to deprive the occupier of the opportunity to place its missile launchers somewhere far from the front line and destroy Ukrainian cities.” The Ukrainian president also said that the country needs US-made ATACMS missiles which have a range of 297 km, however, Washington has so far declined to provide the weapon, reported Reuters. &nbsp;

“Ukraine is only at the stage of negotiations regarding aircraft. Aircraft models and their number are currently being determined,”&nbsp;said Ukrainian air force spokesperson Yuri Ihnat, as per Reuters in clarification of his previous remarks which he said had been misinterpreted. He also said that F-16s might be the best option as a multi-role fighter to replace Kyiv’s ageing Soviet-era warplanes.

Budapest continues on its course to deliberately destroy Ukrainian-Hungarian relations,”&nbsp;said the ministry spokesperson, Oleg Nikolenko, in a statement.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Deputy White House National Security Adviser, Jon Finer on Thursday said that Washington will “very carefully” consider and discuss the idea of sending jets to Ukraine with its allies. On the other hand, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, last week in an interview said that the country has “ruled out” the idea of sending jets to Ukraine as they are “much more complex systems” compared to tanks and the decision would lead the country to “venture into dimensions that I would currently warn against”, reported Reuters. &nbsp;

Ukrainian President Zelensky says Russia 'doesn't have the courage' to admit defeat

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that Russia's invasion of his country has destroyed hundreds of hospitals and other medical institutions, leaving doctors without cancer medications or the ability to do surgery.

Many locations in eastern and southern Ukraine, where the main battlegrounds are, lack even basic antibiotics, according to Zelensky.

"If you consider just medical infrastructure, as of today Russian troops have destroyed or damaged nearly 400 healthcare institutions: hospitals, maternity wards, outpatient clinics," Zelenskiy said in a video address to a medical charity group on Thursday.

He described the condition in Russian-occupied areas as "catastrophic."

"This amounts to a complete lack of medication for cancer patients. It means extreme difficulties or a complete lack of insulin for diabetes. It is impossible to carry out surgery. It even means, quite simply, a lack of antibiotics."

On March 9, a maternity facility in the besieged port city of Mariupol was almost completely destroyed in one of the most highly condemned atrocities of the conflict. Russia claimed that the attack was orchestrated and that armed Ukrainian organisations had exploited the facility.

The Kremlin claims it exclusively attacks military or strategic targets, not civilians. Ukraine accuses Russia of war crimes and cites civilian casualties from Russian artillery and fighting on a regular basis. The charges are denied by Russia.

"Roskomnadzor warns the Russian media not to publish this interview. The media outlets conducting the interviews will be subject to scrutiny to determine the extent of responsibility and the appropriate response to be taken," the agency said. &nbsp;

The journalists, who interviewed the Ukrainian president, were Vladimir Solovyov of Moscow newspaper Kommersant, Tikhon Dzyadko from recently shuttered channel TV Rain, Ivan Kolpakov from Latvia-based website Meduza and prominent writer Mikhail Zygar. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Ahead of the interview, Novaya Gazeta editor Dmitry Muratov, who won Nobel Peace Prize last year, submitted questions for Zelensky.
