Kyiv, on Sunday (September 10) blamed Russia for the death of two aid workers, one Canadian and the other Spanish, in eastern Ukraine. It was previously reported that Russian shelling hit a van which was carrying a team of four people working with a Ukrainian non-governmental organisation near the war-battered city of Bakhmut.

What do we know about the aid workers’ death?

Kyiv accused Moscow’s troops of killing Emma Igual, a Spanish citizen, and Anthony Ihnat, a Canadian citizen, both working for the NGO Road to Relief. They said two German citizens working for the aid group had also been injured after the Russian shelling in the eastern Donetsk region.

The organisation on its Instagram page said that the volunteers were helping evacuate the wounded from the front-line areas and were trapped inside the van as it flipped over and caught fire after being struck by shells near the two of Chasiv Yar.

The other two volunteers were identified as German medical volunteer Ruben Mawick and Swedish volunteer Johan Mathias Thyr, who were seriously wounded, according to the organisation.

At the time, they also said that the organisation was unable to find the van’s fourth passenger, Igual. The death of the 32-year-old Spanish citizen, who was also the organisation’s director, was confirmed by Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares.

“Unfortunately, I can confirm a missile hit a vehicle in which this Spanish worker was travelling who was working for a humanitarian NGO in Ukraine.
‘A painful, irreparable loss’: Kyiv

The Ukrainian officials called the deaths of the two volunteers, “a painful, irreparable loss” and said that the aid workers had dedicated themselves to limiting the harm to civilians caught in the conflict. The volunteers also carried out evacuations and distributed humanitarian relief to those affected, said the officials in Kyiv.

Ukraine blames Russia for deaths of Spanish and Canadian foreign aid workers

While the G20 Summit's Delhi Declaration addressed a range of global challenges, the omission of Russia by name while referring to the war in Ukraine remained conspicuous. The G20 Summit's outcome left Ukraine searching for stronger condemnation and a more unified response against Russia.

Shairee Malhotra, the Think20 Taskforce Coordinator for India's G20 presidency, offered insights into the situation.

Malhotra said, "It is understandable that Ukraine would feel this way."

"Ukraine would have expected and wanted to see concrete and firm references calling out Russian aggression, which the declaration avoids even though it does call on states to uphold the principles of international law including territorial integrity and sovereignty."

After the New Delhi Leaders' Declaration was adopted with the consensus of G20 member nations, Ukrainian foreign affairs ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko wrote on X, formerly Twitter, "G20 adopted a final declaration. We are grateful to the partners who tried to include strong wording in the text. However, in terms of Russia's aggression against Ukraine, G20 has nothing to be proud of."

Asked whether the absence of outright mention of Russia indicated dwindling support for Ukraine, Malhotra stated, "No, the absence of any mention of Russia in the Delhi Declaration does not signify dwindling military or political Western support for Ukraine."

Malhotra explained that the declaration was a result of "India’s skilled drafters and negotiators who managed to gain consensus on the ‘impossible’ document."

Testament of India's close ties with US, Europe

She said the declaration was also a testament to India's close bilateral ties with the United States, European Union and other Western states.

Despite their support for Ukraine, she added, US and European G20 members "would not have wanted India’s G20 presidency to conclude without a successful joint statement."

China's role in supporting the declaration also raised curiosity.

Malhotra pointed out, "China would not have signed on to a text that was explicitly critical of Russia, given its close relations with the country."

While it did not explicitly condemn Russia's actions, the declaration highlighted the disruptive impact of the war, particularly on developing countries, the expert added.

Emerging economies led by India and including Brazil, Indonesia, South Africa played a significant role in convincing developed economies to sign the text, she said.

Malhotra suggested that China's presence on the same side can be attributed to its ongoing competition for influence in the Global South.

G20: Ukraine’s hopes of Russia’s stronger condemnation dashed. Is West support for it waning?

Romania on Saturday (September 9) said that new fragments of a drone similar to those used by the Russian military were found on the NATO member’s territory across the border from Ukraine. The Romanian president called the incident unacceptable and said he had informed the NATO chief about the same who reiterated his support for Bucharest.

What did Romania find?

Romania said that its soldiers found fragments of a drone “similar to those used by the Russian Army”.

The defence ministry said the country’s naval forces were deployed after local officials alerted them to suspected drone fragments discovered 2.5 kilometres southeast of the village of Plauru.

The village is across the Danube river and from the Ukrainian port of Izmail. “In the search, fragments of a drone similar to those used by the Russian army were discovered,” said the Romanian defence ministry, in a statement.

Finding of the fragments also comes days after reported drone debris was disovered in that area some kilometres away from Saturday’s find.

The fragments have since been picked up for analysis, the statement added. Notably, this is the second suspected Russian drone piece found in Romanian territory this week.

Romanian president talks to NATO chief

President Klaus Iohannis said that he had informed NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg about the drone pieces and the latter reiterated the United States-led military alliance’s complete solidarity with Romania.

“The identification by Romanian authorities on Romanian territory near the border with Ukraine of new drone fragments...indicates an unacceptable breach occurred of the air space of Romania, a NATO state, with real risks to the security of Romanian citizens in the area,” said Iohannis.

He added, “I firmly condemn this incident caused by Russian attacks on Ukrainian Danube river ports.”

Meanwhile, Stoltenberg said Russian strikes near the border were “destabilising” even though they were not directed or intended to hit a NATO member.

Earlier this week, the US State Department said it would rotate additional F-16 fighter jets to bolster NATO’s air policing mission in Romania.

The first discovery of possible drone debris came on Wednesday (Sep 6) after Ukraine alleged on Monday that drones detonated in Romania during an overnight Russian air strike on Izmail. The NATO member initially denied the reports before saying that they found pieces on Wednesday.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which is the atomic watchdog of the United Nations (UN), on Friday (September 9) warned of a potential threat to nuclear safety due to a spike in fighting near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in the war-torn Ukraine.

In a statement, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said, "I remain deeply concerned about the possible dangers facing the plant at this time of heightened military tension in the region." “Whatever happens in a conflict zone, wherever it may be, everybody would stand to lose from a nuclear accident, and I urge that all necessary precautions must be taken to avoid it happening,” Grossi said. He added the IAEA team was informed that staff at the nuclear power plant had been reduced temporarily to minimum levels due to concerns about more military activity in the area. 'Numerous explosions reported near Zaporizhzhia for past 1 week' The IAEA said that its experts deployed at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant reported hearing numerous explosions over the past week. There has been no damage to the plant. "Starting last Saturday, the IAEA team heard around two dozen explosions over three days, followed by several more in the last few days. There was no damage to the plant itself," the statement further said. Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine in February last year, the UN atomic watchdog has expressed concerns that the fighting could cause a potential radiation leak from the facility, which is one of the world’s 10 biggest nuclear power stations. The plant's six reactors have been shut for months but it still requires power and qualified staff to operate crucial cooling systems and other safety features. The Zaporizhzhia plant has been occupied by Russian forces since March last year. Last month, Ukraine's atomic energy operator said that it was vital to gain control of the plant to supply electricity to Ukraine. G20 delegates have reached a compromise on language to describe the ongoing war in Ukraine, the news agency Reuters reported on Saturday (September 9) as their leaders began the annual G20 summit in India's capital city New Delhi.

G20 delegates have reached a compromise on language to describe the ongoing war in Ukraine, the news agency Reuters reported on Saturday (September 9) as their leaders began the annual G20 summit in India's capital city New Delhi. A person familiar with the developments told Reuters that the G20 country representatives reached a compromise on the language to be used in the final communique, which will be presented to the leaders. Reuters reported that this language could be similar to the one in the communique issued in Indonesia at last year's G20 summit, which noted that while most nations condemned Russia for the invasion, there were also divergent views. Click here to follow LIVE updates on the first day of the G20 Summit Another source told Reuters a joint declaration may or may not come to a unanimous agreement. A third source in one of the G20 member states told the news agency the paragraph on the war on Ukraine had been agreed by Western countries and sent to Russia for its views. What is Russia's take on language to describe Ukraine war? At the G20 Summit, Russia is being represented by its Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov who said he will block the final declaration unless it reflects Moscow's position on Ukraine and other crises. The source in one of the G20 member states told Reuters that Russia had the option to accept the West's views and give its dissent as part of the statement. If there is no agreement, India will have to issue a chair statement. This would mean that for the first time in 20 years, G20 will not have a declaration. G20 member states are divided over Russia's offensive in Ukraine, with Western countries pushing for strong condemnation of Russia while others are demanding a focus on broader economic issues. Turkish prez spoke with Japanese PM to revive Black Sea grain deal During the first day of the G20 Summit on Saturday, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan held talks with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on reviving the Black Sea grain deal, Reuters reported citing sources. Earlier this week, Turkish President Erdogan said that after talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, it would soon be possible to revive the grain deal. He added that Ukraine should soften its negotiating position against Russia in talks over reviving the deal and export more grain to Africa rather than Europe. The meeting between Erdogan and Kishida comes as Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi arrived in Ukraine on Saturday to show support for the war-torn country and discuss the reconstruction from the damages caused due to Russia's offensive. G20 Summit: Delegates reach consensus on language referring to war in Ukraine, says report

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi arrived in Ukraine on Saturday (September 9) to show support for the war-torn country and discuss the reconstruction after the damages caused due to Russia's offensive.

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi arrived in Ukraine on Saturday (September 9) to show support for the war-torn country and discuss the reconstruction after the damages caused due to Russia's offensive. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press, Foreign Minister Hayashi is accompanied by many business leaders during the visit. Hayashi will meet his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba in Kyiv. The report said that Hayashi is also set to visit Bucha, which is one of the hardest-hit towns on the outskirts of Kyiv. Foreign minister's first visit since start of war: What to expect? This is the Japanese foreign minister's first visit to Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian offensive in February last year. A foreign ministry official, who chose to remain anonymous, told the Associated Press that Hayashi would convey Tokyo's determination to support Ukraine’s economic recovery and reconstruction from the damages of war “from a uniquely Japanese perspective” through cooperation between the public and private sectors. The official added that Hayashi's business delegation to Ukraine includes Japanese business leaders like Rakuten Group CEO Hiroshi Mikitani and All Co. President Teppei Sakano. The delegation aims to assess the situation in Ukraine on the ground and communicate with Kyiv about its reconstruction needs. Japan is also planning to host a conference with Ukraine aimed at economic reconstruction of the latter country at the end of this year or early next year, the report added. Six months back, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida visited Ukraine, the last G7 leader to do so ahead of the summit in May. Since the beginning of the war, Japan has donated over $7 billion to Ukraine, mostly for humanitarian assistance. The military equipment supplied to Ukraine is limited to non-lethal weapons due to the legal limitations under the Japanese pacifist Constitution. Japan's foreign minister arrives in war-torn Ukraine to discuss reconstruction

India wants to incorporate concerns of Russia and China while forming a statement condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine at the G20 forum, Reuters reported Thursday quoting some Indian government sources.

The two-day G20 summit in New Delhi will kick off on September 9 without the presence of Russian and Chinese leaders, but world leaders including US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron are expected to attend.

However, the bloc has remained divided over the Ukraine crisis, with Western nations pushing for harsher language in the joint statement.

Russia has threatened to block the joint communiqué if it fails to reflect its ‘concerns.’

India’s argument

New Delhi has firmly taken this stance that the G20 forum is not the place for geopolitics and that the joint statement must reflect the concerns of China and Russia.

"As long as everyone endorses the structure of the document, that is a consensus. We are trying for a situation that everyone including Russia, G7 and China are happy that their views are there," one of the Indian officials said.

The other way around is to release a more general statement, another official was quoted as saying by Reuters.

New Delhi G20: India’s best chance

Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India has stressed using the opportunity of hosting the G20 summit to better reflect the country’s rising stature on the world stage.

If it manages to have all members agree on the joint statement, it would be considered a major diplomatic win for the country.

However, it fails to produce a joint statement; it would be for the first time in the summit’s history, and would also raise questions on the group’s viability.

"It would certainly lead to a crisis of confidence in the Group," said Creon Butler, director of the Global Economy and Finance.

West raises objections on India’s G20 draft

Earlier it was reported that some European nations have raised objections to text drafted by India on the Russia-Ukraine war.

In a press briefing held Wednesday, a senior EU official said they were still seeking common grounds with India to agree on a joint statement.

Zelensky claims Russian strike kills at least 17 in east Ukraine market

The first Russian crew to use hypersonic, air-launched Kinzhal missiles during Moscow's military operation in Ukraine has been presented with state awards, the Russian TASS state news agency reported on Monday.

"The Su-34 aircraft used the Kinzhal hypersonic missile during the special military operation," TASS cited an unnamed military source as saying. "The first crew that successfully completed this task was presented with state awards."

Russia calls its actions in Ukraine a "special military operation". Kyiv and its allies say the 18-month-long Russian aggression is an unprovoked war to grab land.

Moscow has said very little so far about the Kinzhal air-launched ballistic missile, but Ukraine's military Kyiv says Russia uses them frequently.

TASS did not say when Russia used the Kinzhal missiles for the first time in Ukraine. The Russian defence ministry said in March that the missiles had been deployed to destroy Ukrainian targets, according to the ministry's Telegram channel.

The Kinzhal is one of six "next generation" weapons unveiled by President Vladimir Putin in a speech in March 2018.

New photo purportedly shows Russia's 'General Armageddon' for first time since Wagner mutiny

The use of cluster munitions has led to the death or injuries of more than 1,000 people. Casualties by the bomb rose eightfold last year due to their use in the Russia-Ukraine war, said the Cluster Munition Coalition (CMC), in its annual report on Tuesday (September 5).

This comes months after the United States received criticism from its allies in Europe, the United Nations, and international organisations for sending the controversial cluster munitions to Ukraine for the first time since the Russian invasion, and amid Kyiv’s counteroffensive.

Russia has “extensively” been using cluster bombs from its stockpile and also developed new ones during its “special military operation” in Ukraine, the monitor noted in its 96-page global ‘Cluster Munition Monitor 2023’ report.

Highest number of deaths due to cluster bombs since 2008

According to the report, the deaths caused by cluster munitions were the highest since the 2008 ban on the bombs. However, the US and Ukraine, along with countries like China and Russia, are not a part of a treaty joined by more than 100 countries that enforces the restriction.

The report by the CMC campaign group recorded some 353 deaths due to cluster munitions which is the most since the group began compiling its annual reports over a decade.

Cluster munitions have been widely denounced for killing and maiming civilians as they typically release large numbers of smaller bomblets that had hit targets indiscriminately over a wide area, threatening civilians.

Not to mention the small bomblets which do not explode when deployed and can pose a danger for years after a conflict ends. People who do survive the attack suffer severe injuries from blasts and burns that can result in life-long wounds which require medical attention.

“It’s unconscionable that civilians are still dying and being wounded from cluster munitions 15 years after these weapons were prohibited,” said Mary Wareham from Human Rights Watch (HRW), during a press conference in Geneva.

The report also noted that 95 per cent of cluster munition-related casualties last year were civilians and three-quarters were children, given that they are often drawn to play with unexploded bomblets which look like shiny balls or batteries.

In 2022, most of the casualties were due to live bombs, said the report, unlike previous years where most deaths were nearly always due to delayed explosion of bomb remnants.

Use of cluster munitions during Ukraine war

Out of the 1,172 victims last year, Ukraine – which had not registered any cluster munition casualties for several years – recorded 916 deaths and injuries, nearly all of them involving civilians, said the CMC campaign group.

“The vast majority of the cluster munition rocket missile and artillery attacks in Ukraine…have been conducted by Russian forces,” said Wareham, who also participated in the report. She added, “That is I think the major reason for the uptick in civilian casualties.”

Ukraine has reported a total of 890 casualties – 294 deaths and 596 injuries – due to attacks using cluster munitions, said the monitor.

Russia has “repeatedly” used cluster munitions, said the CMC but it also noted that Ukraine has also deployed the controversial bomb but to a “lesser extent”. However, given that the data is from last year, it does not include Ukraine’s use of cluster bombs provided by the US this year.

“Ukrainian forces have also used cluster munitions, resulting in civilian casualties,” said the report. However, Kyiv has maintained that it only uses the cluster munition against Russian troops at the front line while Moscow has denied using them at all but has threatened to do so.

Russian officials after the US’ announcement have repeatedly accused Ukraine of using cluster munitions against civilians. However, the number could be higher.

Loren Persi, a co-author of the report, said that many casualties in Ukraine might have gone unrecorded, suggesting that there were at least 51 cluster munition attacks in 2022 where casualties were not recorded.

What about other conflicts?

The monitor also documented the first known use of cluster bombs in countries like Myanmar last year. The report also accused Myanmar military and Syrian government forces of using cluster munitions and causing civilian harm.

Cluster munitions were also used in countries like Azerbaijan, Iraq, Laos, Lebanon, and Yemen, according to the CMC report.

These countries are not among those who have joined the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM) that prohibits the use, transfer, production and stockpiling of cluster bombs, which has been signed by 112 nations and 12 other signatories.

“The greatest obstacle to countries working to eradicate cluster munitions are governments that are unwilling to join the convention and that undermine its principles by using or transferring the weapon,” said Wareham.

This was after the HRW, in a statement, noted that at least 21 nations, including those in the West who support Ukraine’s war effort, criticised the US government’s decision to transfer cluster bombs.

Kremlin has 'nothing to say' on reports of Putin-Kim Jong Un summit

A Ukrainian court ordered tycoon Ihor Kolomoisky to be held in custody for two months on suspicion of fraud and money laundering on Saturday, a striking move against one of the country's most powerful businessmen.

The detention of Kolomoisky, who is under US sanctions and is a one-time supporter of President Volodymyr Zelensky whose election he backed in 2019, comes as Kyiv is trying to signal progress during a wartime crackdown on corruption.

Defence lawyers said Kolomoisky would appeal the ruling, questioning its legality, but that he would not post bail of almost $14 million in order to secure his release, broadcaster Radio Liberty reported.

After a hearing at a district court in Kyiv late on Saturday, Kolomoisky, one of Ukraine's richest men, was shown being led away in a blue tracksuit jacket in television footage. He could not be reached for comment.

The Security Service of Ukraine announced the case against Kolomoisky on Saturday morning, publishing photographs on Telegram Messenger showing him being served documents by security officers and signing them.

"It was established that during 2013-2020, Ihor Kolomoisky legalized more than half a billion hryvnias ($14 million) by withdrawing them abroad and using the infrastructure of banks under (his) control," the agency said in a statement.

After the ruling, Zelensky appeared to allude obliquely to the case in his evening address, thanking law enforcement agencies for showing resolve in bringing long-running cases to justice.

"Without a doubt, there will be no more decades-long 'business as usual' for those who plundered Ukraine and put themselves above the law and any rules... The law must work," he said.

WARTIME CRACKDOWN

Kolomoisky is seen as one of the class of oligarchs who amassed huge industrial wealth after the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union and wielded outsize political and economic influence.

Before Russia's February 2022 invasion, Zelensky and his team passed legislation requiring oligarchs to register and to stay out of politics. The war has eroded the oligarchs' power as industrial assets have been destroyed in the east and south, and their television channels have been broadcasting under a centralised signal.

Before winning the presidency, Zelensky rose to prominence as a comedian and played the role of president on a show aired on a Kolomoisky-owned TV channel. He denies Kolomoisky has had any influence over the government.

During the war, Zelensky has emphasised Ukraine's crackdown on corruption as Kyiv has applied to join the European Union and hopes to secure tens of billions of dollars to help rebuild the country after a war which has no end in sight.

Kolomoisky's detention is not the first wartime move involving him.

Last November, the state took control of stakes in major strategic companies, some of which were associated with the businessman, invoking wartime laws to help the war effort.

Earlier this year, security officials searched Kolomoisky's home in connection with a separate investigation into embezzlement and tax evasion at the country's two largest oil companies partially owned by him.

Kolomoisky is a former owner of leading Ukrainian bank PrivatBank, which was nationalised in late 2016 as part of a clean-up of the banking system.

He has owned assets in the energy, banking, and other sectors, including an influential television channel.

The United States imposed sanctions on Kolomoisky in 2021 "due to his involvement in significant corruption". US authorities have also alleged Kolomoisky and a business partner laundered stolen funds through the United States. Kolomoisky has denied any wrongdoing.

Ukrainian oligarch Ihor Kolomoisky arrested in fraud case

Russia on Sunday (September 3) launched a 3.5-hour-long drone attack in Ukraine's Odesa, hitting Danube River port infrastructure and injuring at least two people.

Russia on Sunday (September 3) launched a 3.5-hour-long drone attack in Ukraine's Odesa, hitting Danube River port infrastructure and injuring at least two people. Meanwhile, Russia said it hit targets on the Danube port of Reni, on the border with NATO member Romania. Russia hits Ukraine's Danube port on Romanian border According to a report by the news agency Reuters, the Ukrainian Air Force said that its air defence systems shot down 22 of the 25 Iranian-made Shahed drones that Russia launched on the Odesa region in the early hours of Sunday. "Russian terrorists continue to attack port infrastructure in the hope of provoking a food crisis and famine in the world," the Ukrainian president's chief of staff Andriy Yermak wrote on Telegram and posted a photograph of a firefighter directing water at the burning ruins of concrete structures. In a statement, the Russian army said it "carried out a group drone strike on fuel storage facilities used to supply military equipment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the port of Reni, in the Odesa region." It added, "All designated targets were hit." Romania 'strongly condemns' attack on Danube After the attack, Romanian defence ministry released a statement and strongly condemned repeated Russian attacks on Ukraine's Danube port and called it "unjustified". The "reiterates in the strongest terms that these attacks against civilian targets and infrastructure in Ukraine are unjustified and in deep contradiction with the rules of international humanitarian law". It added, "At no time did the means of attack used by the Russian Federation generate any direct military threat to the national territory or territorial waters of Romania." Two killed in biggest Russian strike in Kyiv in months Sunday's drone attack came three days after Russia launched its biggest airstrike in Kyiv in months, killing two people. Reuters reported three people were wounded in the strike and combat drones attacked infrastructure in the central region of Zhytomyr. "The blast wave broke all the windows, the entry doors are broken too. We were terribly scared," said Liudmyla Savchuk, a 57-year-old teacher whose apartment in northwestern Kyiv was damaged. "Then there was another explosion in a couple of seconds, 20 or 30 seconds. We're cleaning everything now," Savchuk added. Russia has conducted regular, but smaller, air strikes on Kyiv this summer, and hit the Ukrainian capital with large-scale aerial attacks in May. "Kyiv has not experienced such a powerful attack since spring. The enemy launched a massive, combined attack using drones and missiles," Serhiy Popko, the head of the city's military administration said on Telegram. War-ravaged Ukraine urges India to fund post-war reconstruction efforts

A dramatic moment was captured in video footage when a Ukrainian drone smartly managed to dodge three Russian military aircraft that tried to shoot it down.

The Defence Intelligence of Ukraine shared the video in which the drone was seen coming in close contact with one Russian jet and two combat helicopters. What followed was the ultimate chasing sequence between a tiny drone and the heavily fortified aircraft.

In the video, the drone which is just metres away from the Russian air forces can be seen teasing it before a spray of bullets is unleashed towards it by one of the aircraft.

Watch: Ukrainian drone dramatically dodges attack by three Russian aircraft

Ukrainian children head below ground at start of new school year

The White House said Friday (September 1) that the Ukrainian forces have made "notable progress" against Russian troops in their southern offensive in recent days.

White House national security spokesman John Kirby was asked about the criticism that Kyiv's southern campaign against occupying Russian forces has not advanced much in the past weeks. He admitted that the fight has gone slower than Ukraine itself had hoped.

Kirby told reporters: "That said, we have noted over the last 72 hours or so some notable progress by Ukrainian armed forces on that southern line. They have achieved some success against that second line of Russian defences."

Ukraine has claimed that its counteroffensive has gained momentum after stockpiling Western-supplied weapons, building up assault battalions and working to degrade Russian positions. The war-torn nation also said that the nation was making advances.

Experts and analysts have argued that Ukrainian forces have been penetrating Russian lines in recent days, especially between Robotyne and Verbove in the Zaporizhzhia region.

Zelensky: No peace unless all occupied territories are freed

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Friday that there can be no "sustainable" peace in the nation unless all occupied territories are freed.

While speaking at the European House Ambrosetti Business Forum, he said: "Without Crimea, without Donbas, without occupied territories, there can be no real sustainable peace in Ukraine and Europe."

"Please have a look at what is happening to Crimea when it is under the control of the Russian Federation. Does civilization exist there? No. Does tourism exist there? No. Did they increase the number of workplaces? No. Did entrepreneurs open their businesses there? No," he added.

They have achieved some success against that second line of Russian defences." The war-torn nation also said that the nation was making advances. Experts and analysts have argued that Ukrainian forces have been penetrating Russian lines in recent days, especially between Robotyne and Verbove in the Zaporizhzhia region. But it's not that easy as Russian forces have established long and deep barriers across the terrain, including tank traps, minefields and other defences, to slow Ukraine's advance. Kirby said, "We've all seen the criticism by anonymous officials out there, which frankly is not helpful" to Ukraine's battlefield effort. US claims Ukraine has made 'notable progress' in offensive

In an attempt to cement their authority in the occupied regions, Russian authorities on Thursday (August 31) began holding elections in parts of Moscow-annexed Ukrainian territories. Russia currently controls one-fifth of Ukraine's territory: the Crimea peninsula annexed in 2014, and parts of Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions annexed in 2022.

Moscow's handpicked governors, which include veteran pro-Russian politicians and others known only locally, are currently seeking full terms of office in the four regions. The polls will conclude on September 10, when Russia holds regional polls, according to a Reuters report.

All governors have the endorsement of President Vladimir Putin after joining the Kremlin's United Russia bloc with fanfare in recent months. Consequently, most are facing only nominal opposition.

Estonia's Prime Minister Kaja Kallas is reportedly under pressure to step down in the aftermath of reports that her husband has part ownership of a company that has kept operations in Russia even after Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. The matter regarding her husband's business will now be discussed by a parliamentary committee.

Estonian President Alar Karis, who is the leader of the Social Democrats, said on Monday (August 28) that the scandal has impacted Estonia's credibility in its interaction with allies.

ERR reported this week that Stark Logistics, an Estonian company in which Kallas' husband Arvo Hallik indirectly owns a 25% share, has been supplying an aerosol container factory in Russia, owned by another Estonian company.

Karis said: "The business activities of Prime Minister Kaja Kallas' family members vis-a-vis Russia have raised many questions in the media and in society and have put the spotlight on the head of the government and the values that Estonia must follow."

He also called on the prime minister on Thursday to provide a detailed explanation, but the company is partly owned by Kallas's husband Arvo Hallik.

Estonia prime minister under pressure to quit over husband's Russia ties

Pope Francis is facing criticism for telling Russian youths to not give up their "legacy" as heirs of a "great, enlightened Russian empire", referring to the heirs of past tsars such as Peter the Great. Notably, President Vladimir Putin hails them and holds them up as an example to justify the "special military operation" in Ukraine.

On Friday, Pope Francis told young Russians, who were gathered for the All-Russian Meeting of Catholic Youth in St. Petersburg that "never give up this legacy, you are the heirs of the great Mother Russia, go forward with it".

Pope said, "Don't forget (your) heredity. You are heirs of the great Russia - the great Russia of the saints, of kings, the great Russia of Peter the Great, of Catherine II, the great Russian empire, cultured, so much culture, so much humanity. You are the heirs of the great mother Russia. Go forward." He was reading the prepared speech in Spanish, but switched in between and started speaking in Italian.

"It is deeply regrettable that such notions of being a great power, which contributes, in essence, to Russia's chronic aggressiveness, are voiced by the pope, either knowingly or unknowingly," Nikolenko added.

Ukraine liberates strategic southeastern settlement; Russian strike kills at least two

US President Joe Biden has pointed a finger at his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin after reports emerged on Wednesday (August 24) of a private plane crash in Moscow's Tver region and it was mentioned that Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin was on the list of passengers.

The Russian Federal Air Transport Agency has said that the Wagner boss was on board the plane, but still, there have been claims and counterclaims over his apparent death. Flowers were laid for the late Wagner chief outside the organisation's headquarters in St. Petersburg.

According to local media reports, the aviation agency also said that the carrier that operated the plane released the names of those who were on board. In addition to Prigozhin, others named are Sergey Propustin, Evgeniy Makaryan, Aleksandr Totmin, Valeriy Chekalov, Dmitriy Utkin, and Nikolay Matuseev.

Russia sacks 'General Armageddon' not seen since Wagner mutiny; appoints acting chief: Report

Russia and Ukraine continue to be involved in ceaseless drone attacks. Kremlin on Wednesday (August 23) said it had thwarted a Ukrainian drone attack in the capital city of Moscow but three people were killed in another strike in Russia near the Ukrainian border.

Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov took to social media to inform about the drone strike.

"Three civilians have been killed. The Ukrainian forces launched an explosive device through a drone when people were on the street," said Gladkov, who added the drone hit a sanatorium in a village.

Meanwhile, the defence ministry claimed that its air defence forces had gunned down two drones hovering over Mozhaisky and Khimki districts in Moscow. A third appeared to be jammed and out of control as it smashed into a high-rise building under construction in a Moscow business district. The same district was hit on two occasions in three days, at the beginning of the month.

At the time, Kremlin described the incident as a "planned terrorist attack" and an "assassination attempt on the president of Russia". "Tonight, the Kyiv regime attempted a drone strike on the Kremlin residence of the President of the Russian Federation. Two drones were aimed at the Kremlin," the press service had said in a statement. Disclaimer: A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia war on the ground and online. Russia thwarts Ukrainian drone attacks near Moscow, two airports affected

Around 5 billion euros ($5.44 billions) will be provided to Ukraine annually as financial aid by Germany, the German Finance Minister Christian Lindner said on Sunday, August 20.

Germany remains one of the key benefactors to Ukraine and has repeatedly said it will continue to offer support as long as necessary.

In May, Germany announced 2.7 billion euros of military aid to Ukraine in a package that included tanks and drones.

Flight disruptions

Moscow's Mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, thanked Russia's military for their prompt action.

Russia's aviation agency, Rosaviatsia, informed that flights to the Domodedovo and Vnukovo international airports experienced temporary limitations during the night, but operations returned to normalcy subsequently, as reported by RIA Novosti news agency.

Russia foils Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow amid Kyiv's counteroffensive

A couple of days after the United States approved sending F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine from Denmark and Netherlands, Kyiv announced training had begun for Ukrainian pilots on operating the planes.

Defence Minister Oleksiy Reznikov in a TV interview informed about the training, adding that it would take at least six months or possibly longer to complete it.

"Therefore, to build reasonable expectations, set a minimum of six months in your mind, but do not be disappointed if it is longer," said Reznikov, adding that he would not give details on where and when the training was taking place,

Earlier this week, the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken assured his Danish and Dutch counterparts that Washington will accelerate clearance of F-16 transfer requests for the war-torn nation after the pilots are trained.

"I am writing to express the United States' full support for both the transfer of F-16 fighter aircraft to Ukraine and for the training of Ukrainian pilots by qualified F-16 instructors," wrote Blinken in a letter accessed by Reuters.

"It remains critical that Ukraine is able to defend itself against ongoing Russian aggression and violation of its sovereignty," he added.

He said the approval of the requests would allow Ukraine to take "full advantage of its new capabilities as soon as the first set of pilots complete their training".

US reacts after 'defeatist' Kyiv statement

The decision by the US came a day after Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Yuriy Ihnat said his country will not be able to operate the F-16 fighter jets to defend itself from the Russian onslaught, at least this year.

“It’s already obvious we won’t be able to defend Ukraine with F-16 fighter jets during this autumn and winter," Ihnat told Ukrainian channels.

“We had big hopes for this plane, that it will become part of air defence, able to protect us from Russia’s missiles and drones terrorism,” he added.

Kyiv had been repeatedly calling upon the Western bloc to supply the F-16 jets for its defence against the superior Russian jets. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky remained at the forefront of it as he openly discussed the proposition during his brief appearance at the G7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan, earlier this year.

After much back-and-forth, US President Joe Biden endorsed a training programme for Ukrainian pilots but never gave a precise timeline.
