The LIVA Miss Diva Universe beauty pageant concluded this week, and Shweta Sharda and Sonal Kukreja were crowned LIVA Miss Diva Universe 2023 and LIVA Miss Supranational 2023, respectively.

The LIVA Miss Diva Universe beauty pageant concluded this week, and Shweta Sharda and Sonal Kukreja were crowned LIVA Miss Diva Universe 2023 and LIVA Miss Supranational 2023, respectively. The two beauty queens won the hearts of the jury and took home the crown in the glitzy ceremony. Shweta, who has been around in the industry for a very long time, was crowned Miss Diva Universe 2023 and will now represent India at the 72nd Miss Universe pageant in November later in the year. Meanwhile, Sonal's journey holds diverse experience and knowledge, and currently, she is the founder of Unicas, a startup company. On their win, the two gorgeous beauty queens sat down with WION, discussing their empowering journey, reflecting on the challenges they faced, and revealing which beauty queen has inspired them through their journey Here are edited excerpts from the interview: Q: Now that both of you hold a title and a crown, how does it feel? Sonal: It is a dream come true but I feel like a lot more than that. We are not living our dreams, but so many other people's dreams. It's a very overwhelming feeling. Shweta: For me, getting this crown on my head feels like the top of the world. It was a very unreal movement for me, and I felt very grateful at that point of time. I felt very emotional because I have been manifesting this for a very long time. So, it was a dream come true moment for me, and I am still not out of that moment. Shweta: When we were very close to getting crowned for LIVA Miss Diva Universe 2023, I was just praying with my eyes closed. I was just taking Ganpati Bappa's name. I was just saying 'Ganpati Bappa, I have worked really hard for this, and I have always manifested that this will be on my head. I have been very true to myself and to my journey.' I have manifested this so many times, but you know that feeling, my eyes were closed, remembering all the sacrifices I have done to be there. So, I was manifesting that it would be my name....so when they announced that the winner is Shweta Sharda...It was unreal and those emotions were so beautiful that I just can't explain this in words. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Miss Diva (@missdivaorg) × Q: Shweta, now that you will be representing India at the 72nd Miss Universe pageant in November this year, what do you have in your mind when you think about it? Are you hopeful of bringing the crown home this year? Shweta: I think representing our nation and country on an international stage is the dream of a million people out there, and if I have gotten the chance to do that, I'm not going to leave any stone unturned in my preparations. I'm going to give my best. I'm going to give all out, I'm going to put in all my hard work this time because now it's just not about me, it's about the country. It's not just about wearing a crown and being a beauty queen, it's about justifying the position that you are in your life. Q: There is a long journey until the final day, what challenges have both of you faced during the whole process? Shweta: I have encountered a lot of challenges because I have been living a very different life before this pageant. I come from a dancing background I have a different lifestyle and different times to do things. But in pageants, you need to be very disciplined, and you have to live a very healthy life because you will be the one who will be influencing all the youth out there. Also, I had this fear of speaking in public, I have overcome that fear, and right now I think I'm ready to inspire the youth and the universe to live their lives with purpose and chase their dreams carelessly, just like I did for believing myself. Sonal: I think I kind of trusted the process. I think the journey also sees a lot of criticism as to like what other people might think of you. I think a big challenge is also to let go of all these inhibitions about myself about what people are saying and just trust the process. I think we are a testimony to that, but like it is worth it, it pays off. Q: Is there an Indian beauty queen you guys adore? Sonal: My constant favourite has to be Priyanka Chopra. I relate to her 100%, and I'm sure the millions of girls out there do too. She has really made us proud of being an Indian. Shweta: I think I'll go with Priyanka for obvious reasons. She has made us proud and also because, not only in pageants but also in Bollywood, the kind of roles she has played are very inspiring, like Mary Kom. I'm really inspired by the role she has played so brilliantly, so I think I look up to her a lot. Q: People tend to associate beauty pageants with just showcasing beauty. Do you echo that sentiment? Shweta: I have a different perspective on it. I know beauty pageants have faced a lot of criticism. But according to me, it's all about empowering women and amplifying your true voices to the issues that need to get highlighted. I think it's about empowering each other or stepping towards more exclusive and progressive goals. So, for me, this could look very different. Sonal: Pageants come off as vain because you only see one aspect of it until you experience what it has for you. I feel like when someone actually genuinely goes through that journey, they see that to be on that stage to represent a country like India, it takes guts. It always takes guts to glory, and you have to work on yourself, not just on beauty but so much of yourself, to become resilient, mentally strong and emotionally ready. I think it's the whole journey, and that's when you know that when you look at a beauty queen, you feel inspired because you see how much they've worked on themselves to stand where they are today. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sonal Kukreja (@sonalkukreja) × Q: Fellow beauty queen and Miss Universe winner Harnaaz Sandhu faced body shaming after she won the crown. People tend to associate beauty pageants with selective imagery of beauty, where should we draw the line? Sonal: Harnaaz is someone who is very close to my heart. I participated back in 2021 and I saw her with me in that journey and I saw the woman she is. I feel you have to draw a line when it comes to respecting somebody's personal life and their choices. She has been doing everything it takes to make India proud, regardless of weight gain, and there are always some of the other issues that people face; a lot of them don't get shot on camera, but some do. I don't think that gives people who you know, should get around to judging someone too quickly. Harnaaz, when today she stands in front of the camera, when she stands at a press conference, or when she represents India, no matter where she goes, every Indian is filled with pride because of how she carries herself; it's grace that matters, and that is what we are standing here for. Q: What's your message for the young girls who aspire to follow your journeys? Shweta: One advice I would want to give the younger generation of women out there is to be themselves, just to be authentic, to be confident and not to hesitate to take that first step. That courageous step that they will take, can create the path towards success and greatness. Don't hesitate to take that one step. I know it's going to be difficult in the beginning, but I'm sure the ending will be according to your vision. I would like to tell them to be authentic, to speak their heart out in front of the people, to take courageous steps towards success, and just to believe in themselves because, as I have done, I have this crown on my head just by believing in myself, so if I can do it, they can do it too.
The campaign was launched after a tragic incident in August 2006, where a drunk driver claimed the lives of three children on a local bridge. This latest edition of the campaign took place at the Chikushino Automobile School in Chikushino City on August 22 and had 10 participants, including a 77-year-old.

How it went

Drivers were first evaluated on their reflexes and driving skills while sober. They were then provided enough alcohol to exceed the legal limit and given a driving course to complete.

Talking to CNN, a police spokesperson revealed that each participant had a driving instructor with them throughout the exercise, even riding with them in their respective vehicles.

Conducted within the confines of the driving school premises, the "hands-on event" allowed "drivers to experience for themselves the difference between driving before and after drinking and to get a sense of how dangerous drink-driving can be," said the spokesperson.

The results

Many participants, as per the spokesperson, acknowledged that the experience highlighted how they had been "overconfident" about their ability to drive under the influence of alcohol. They also realised that they made more errors than they thought they would. A few participants also noticed that their ability to control the vehicle was affected.

The police spokesperson expressed hope that "that more drivers will realise how dangerous drunk driving is."

Japan and alcohol consumption

Japan maintains relatively low alcohol consumption levels, found a 2021 study from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The nation witnessed a further decline in its alcohol consumption during the pandemic due to restrictions affecting the bar and other alcohol-selling places.

Japanese people consume an average of 8 litres per capita alcohol annually, this is equivalent to about 1.6 bottles of wine or 3 litres of beer per week per person.

Drink and drive? Japanese police use unique approach to show dangers of drunk driving

There's nothing more irritating than noisy, crying children while travelling on a flight. Stuck for hours in the air, all you can do is put on earplugs that do little to dissipate the noise. For people who hate this, a Turkish-Dutch airline is set to introduce an “only adult” zone.

The service for now will be introduced on Turkish-Dutch Corendon Airlines flights between Amsterdam and Curaçao starting November 3.

Only adults

“This zone on the plane is intended for travellers travelling without children and for business travellers who want to work in a quiet environment,” said the airline in a statement.

As per the company's press release, the 'Only Adult' section is set up in the front section of the aircraft and will have 102 seats. Nine seats will be XL with extra legroom and 93 will be standard seats.

The quiet section will be separated from the rest of the aeroplane “by means of walls and curtains, creating a shielded environment that contributes to a calm and relaxed flight.”

Passengers aged 16 or more can travel in this section.

How much will it cost?

Passengers in the “only adult” zone will have to cough up some extra charges for the noiseless journeys.

As per the airline, a seat reservation in the 'Only Adult' aeroplane section will cost passengers 45 Euros (around 48.5 US dollars). The nine extra-legroom seats will have an additional surcharge and will cost people €100 (around 107.9 US dollars) per journey.

A win-win situation

Coredon says that the adult-only zone will not only be a win for travellers looking for a quiet environment but would also benefit parents of little children.

Child-free zone: Airline introduces 'only adult' section for peaceful flights

We are all somewhat aware of King Charles's troubled days at Gordonstoun, the Scottish all-boy boarding school where his father Prince Phillip studied. Charles' days at the boarding school, which he called Colditz in Kilts, turned out to be miserable, but for his brother, Prince Andrew, the situation was totally different.

The new book, War Of The Windsors: The Inside Story Of Charles, Andrew And The Rivalry That Has Defined The Royal Family, by Nigel Cawthorne, reveals a lot about King Charles and Prince Andrew's school days. While Charles became the victim and was often bullied, his young sibling reportedly became a "leader of the pack" and even had several girlfriends at Gordonstoun, per the Daily Mail.

Shy Charles was the loner and silent lad who could easily become the victim. However, Andrew was gifted with a 'thick skin'. With his charm and sense of humour, he had several friends during his days at the Scottish boarding school.

Charles' days at the boarding school

King Charles III's initial days at the Scottish boarding school were miserable. The young prince was sent to the school in an attempt to toughen him to make him fit as the future king of England. But the situation turned out to be dire.

''Charles was a very polite, sweet boy — always incredibly thoughtful and kind, interested in art and music,'' the Queen’s cousin and confidante Margaret Rhodes said. ''But his father interpreted this as weakness, and the Queen believed he knew what was best.''

''But his father interpreted this as weakness, and the Queen believed he knew what was best.'' King Charles' merciless school days, when bullies 'broke his nose' and punched him on the rugby field

The craze around Barbie is still not over. Margot Robbie's film has shattered several box office records since its release, and now the film is set to become Warner Bros.' highest-grossing movie, surpassing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2 lifetime collection.

As per Variety, the film earned $18.2 million from 12,852 screens in 75 international territories over the weekends, taking the worldwide gross to a smashing $1.34 billion.

The film is now only $1 million behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2's box office collection, i.e., $1.341 billion. Last week, Barbie became the highest-grossing movie at the domestic box office, surpassing Chris Pratt's animated film Super Mario Bros.

Barbie had amassed $575.4 million at the domestic box office, crossing Mario’s collection of $574.2 million. Since its release, Ryan Gosling's film has broken several records. The film grossed $377 million worldwide in its opening weekend, making it the biggest debut ever for a film directed by a woman. Then it became the first $1 billion film by a female director.

The film has also become Warner Bros. Discovery’s highest-grossing domestic release, dethroning the 2008 film The Dark Knight.

The Barbie movie stars Margot Robbie as the famous doll and Ryan Gosling as her boyfriend Ken. It was released in theatres on July 21.

More about Barbie:

WION's review on Barbie: Film critic Shomini Sen writes, ''I would still say that the film very smartly shows how society is and humanises the iconic doll. For decades Barbie has been one of the most popular toys for young girls, setting unrealistic standards of beauty. Sure, Mattel has reinvented the doll and made every girl believe that they can be whatever they want to be - just like their favourite doll, but the narrative of everything being overtly perfect has also done damage to several. Greta, in that sense, spins the narrative and adds a layer of cynicism to Barbie land to show how things are in real. Flawed, depressed, and definitely not perfect- even though the plastic remains constant.''

Dream Girl 2 review

WION's film critic Shomini Sen called Ayushmann Khuranna's film tacky and unoriginal.

Dream Girl 2 has funny lines that take potshots at everyone and everything, and use wit to refer to pop culture yet the writing by Shadilyaa and Naresh Kathoria is shabby and very old-fashioned. There are references in galore to TV- Roadies, Kasauti Zingdagi Kay, Kapil Sharma- all are given a hat tip and manage to bring in the necessary humour even but overall, Dream Girl 2 looks tacky with an outdated plot and jaded jokes. Read the full review here.

Heidi Klum is making things clear. The supermodel, who always manages to grab eyeballs for her toned body, recently faced a huge backlash after some reports stated that she only consumes 900 calories per day. Reports about the same started doing the rounds after she did an Instagram Q&A session in which she revealed her weight and what she eats for breakfast, which included three poached eggs in warm chicken broth. Taking to her Instagram stories, Klum refuted reports about her calorie consumption.

Klum, 50, also urged people not to "believe everything that you read."

She added, “I just got home and some friends are sending me these articles that have been written that I only take in 900 calories. I want to say, I don’t think I’ve ever had to count my calories in my life, and don’t believe everything that you read. So, I don’t count my calories."

In the video, Klum also addressed the Q&A session in which she revealed her weight, which led many publications to run stories about her shocking calorie intake.

Explaining her point, the 50-year-old said, "Someone asked me how much I weigh, and I got on the scale and showed how much I weighed."

Singers getting attacked on stage has kind of become the new norm. Artists like Babe Rexha, Pink, and Cardi B are the recent victims who have been hit by the things thrown at them on stage. And recently, Drake was about to become the victim, but luckily he saved himself.

The recent incident happened at the Chase Center in San Francisco, California, where the Canadian rapper was performing. We all have seen the rapper's habit of catching the things thrown at him, but during his recent gig, the singer saved himself from the book, which happens to be his poetry book titled, Ruin Everything: A Stream of Consciousness.

In the video that has gone viral, the rapper is walking on the stage singing when he smartly catches the book hurled towards him in mid-air. The singer was quick to point out the concertgoer who threw it towards him. As a warning, the singer said, "You’re lucky I’m quick, or I would’ve had to beat your ass if that hit me in the face."

About Jailer

Jailer, which was released in theatres worldwide on August 10, marks the first collaboration between director Nelson Dilipkumar and Thalaiva. In the movie, Rajinikanth plays the role of a jailer named Muthuvel Pandian, aka Tiger. The film also stars veteran actors Mohanlal, Jackie Shroff, Priyanka Mohan, Shiva Rajkumar, Tamannaah Bhatia, Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Vasanth Ravi, and Vinayakan.

WION's Review of Jailer

Sidharth MP writes in the review, ''Towards the end of the first half and throughout the second half, there are the big moments that Rajini fans long for. That's the paisa-vasool (money's worth) they've all been looking for. Rajini's usual charisma is on full display- as he exits from cars, he expresses rage, as he toys around and wears his sunglasses, as he lights a cigar and whatnot! As these 'mass moments' unravel one after another, Anirudh Ravichander's music remains a constant factor and ensures that the impact of the big 'Thalaiva' (in Tamil, Rajini is fondly known as 'Thalaiva'- Leader) moment is elevated more than ever.'' Read the review here.

Jailer box office: Rajinikanth's film is unstoppable, earns Rs 500 crore worldwide

Amazon Prime's A League of Their Own has joined the long list of shows that have been impacted by the ongoing actors' and writers' strike. Unfortunately, the show will not be getting its second and final season. In April, the show was renewed for the shortened final season.

However, series co-creator Abbi Jacobson has reacted to the cancellation news and has called out the production after learning that the strike was the reason behind the sudden cancellation.

Also read: WGA strike: Judge rules AI-generated works ineligible for copyright protection

Taking to her Instagram handle, Abbi wrote, "To blame this cancellation on the strike is bullshit and cowardly. But this post isn’t about all that."

Further praising the hard work of the cast and crew, she added, ''About all the ways this show has been put through the ringer. Not today. This post here is about the special show I was lucky to make with so many incredibly talented artists and actors and writers and crew. A show I’m so proud of. Filled to the brim with stories worth telling. Full of so much heart and soul and value.''

While Amazon has not made any official comment on the strike being the reason for the abrupt cancellation, a source has told Variety that the show was another casualty of Hollywood’s ongoing strikes.

Also read: WGA strike: Judge rules AI-generated works ineligible for copyright protection Taking to her Instagram handle, Abbi wrote, "To blame this cancellation on the strike is bullshit and cowardly. But this post isn’t about all that." Further praising the hard work of the cast and crew, she added, ''About all the ways this show has been put through the ringer. Not today. This post here is about the special show I was lucky to make with so many incredibly talented artists and actors and writers and crew. A show I’m so proud of. Filled to the brim with stories worth telling. Full of so much heart and soul and value.'' While Amazon has not made any official comment on the strike being the reason for the abrupt cancellation, a source has told Variety that the show was another casualty of Hollywood’s ongoing strikes. View this post on Instagram A post shared by @abbijacobson × ''With Hollywood’s writers and actors still on strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), there was no hope of production beginning on Season 2 any time soon. That would likely mean the second season would not debut before 2025, while Season 1 aired in August 2022,'' per Variety, The first season of the show had eight episodes, while the second season was set to have only four episodes. A League of Their Own cancelled, Abbi Jacobson says 'it’s bullsh*t to blame' the strike for it

Hundreds of prisoners locked up in Bahrain have initiated a hunger strike citing alleged human rights violations, a UK-based rights group has revealed.

Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy (BIRD) said Friday (August 18), “At least 500 prisoners were taking part in the hunger strike against what they call inhumane prison conditions.”

As per the group, prison inmates are confined to their cells 23 hours a day and are even restricted from practising their religion.

At the centre of the controversy is the Jau prison, where those dissidents are held who were detained following the pro-democracy protests in 2011.

What are the demands of prisoners?

A statement released by the outlawed Bahraini opposition party Al-Wefaq quoted the prisoners as saying that they needed increased time outside the cells.

Other demands include permission to hold prayers in congregation at the prison mosque, changes to constraints on family visits and improvements in education facilities.

“These are not frivolous demands, but necessary ones required for basic human life,” the prisoners said.

US expresses concerns

In response to inquiries about the situation in Bahrain, Vedant Patel, spokesperson for the US State Department, stated that Secretary of State Antony Blinken conveyed concerns regarding certain reports during a meeting with Bahrain's Foreign Minister Abdellatif al-Zayani on July 20.
