Acknowledging growing concerns over the exploitation of young 'influencers' on social media platforms, Illinois has enacted the United States's first law to safeguard minors featured in online videos. The law will also ensure that these young influencers are properly compensated.

The legislation, as per a CNN report, was inspired by the advocacy of 16-year-old Shreya Nallamothu from Normal, Illinois.

How it all started

The teenager's concern reportedly began when scrolling through social media during the pandemic. She noticed an increasing number of children featured in family vlogs. These videos made her "realise family vlogging is putting very private and intimate moments on the internet."

This prompted her to write a letter to Democrat Dave Koehler, her state senator, urging him to consider protective legislation for these children.

"The fact that these kids are either too young to grasp that or weren’t given the chance to grasp that is really sad," says Nallamothu.

The law

Influenced by her letter, last week, Illinois Governor J. B. Pritzker signed into law an amendment to the state's Child Labor Law.

Among other things, the new law allows teenagers over the age of 18 to sue their parents if they were featured in monetised social media videos and not adequately compensated. These rights mirror the rights held by child actors.

The new law draws inspiration from the 1936 "Jackie Coogan's Law," which was designed to prevent parents from exploiting child actors' earnings.

Starting July 1, 2024, parents in Illinois will be obligated to allocate 50 per cent of earnings from a video's content into a blocked trust fund for the child 'influencer'.

The exact amount, however, will depend on the duration for which the child is featured in the video. For instance, if a child appears in 50 per cent of a video, they'll be liable to receive 25 per cent of the earnings. Similarly, for a video they're in 100 per cent, they will get 50 per cent of the earnings.

However, this rule applies only when a child appears on screen for more than 30 per cent of the vlogs shared in a one-year period.

Talking to CNN, Senator Koehler said that they "understand that parents should receive compensation too because they have equity in this, but we don't want to forget about the child."

Why is such a law necessary?

Recently, there has been a rising trend of YouTube parent vloggers and social media influencers posting frequent videos sharing personal details about their lives.

Children often play a significant role in these monetised videos, yet there is no legal requirement for parents to share the video earnings with the children.

Similarly, kid influencer accounts that often earn as much as $20,000 for sponsored posts rarely benefit the children. These accounts are managed by parents due to age restrictions on social media platforms.

"We know with the explosion of social media that parents are using it to monetise kids being on videos. If money is being made and nothing is set up for the children, it's the same thing as a child actor," said Koehler.

Experts say that this legislation "is a long time coming." Jessica Maddox, an assistant professor studying social media influencer communities, expressed hope that other US states will follow Illinois' example.

She said, "Social media labour and careers are becoming increasingly common and viable forms of income, and it’s important that the law catches up with technology to ensure minors aren’t being exploited."

Akshay Kumar's OMG 2 has emerged as a winner at the box office. Despite the tough competition from Sunny Deol's Gadar 2 and Rajinikanth's Jailer, the film continues to earn good numbers at the box office and is now inching towards the Rs 100 crore mark (Rs 1 billion).

Amid this, a lot of rumours have started doing the rounds related to the movie's budget, which many claimed was around Rs 150 crore. However, producer Ajit Andhare has come forward to put a stop to all that.

Ajit, COO of Viacom 18, told Pinkvilla website that Akshay Kumar did not charge a single penny for the film.

Pankaj Tripathi is reliably excellent, and so is Kumar (this might be a radical idea, but he should do more comedy again), but the film is peppered with a number of outstanding character actors in supporting roles. Salman Khan recalls cleaning toilet in boarding school and jail: No work is small

Over the years, Indian cinema has evolved a lot when it comes to showcasing LGBTQ+ content, normalising and accepting transgenders, gays, lesbians, and bisexuals, giving them the same platform, and attempting to treat them equally. A lot of films and, since the advent of OTT, a lot of web shows have come out exploring homosexuality, which was and is still seen as taboo in major parts of our Indian society.

In recent years, thanks to the celluloid world, we've got a bunch of films exploring the LGBTQ theme, and most have tried to talk about acceptance. But the one thing that I felt was missing in most of these shows was reality. The realisation came specially after watching the new web series Taali that's headlined by Sushmita Sen. The show has its own flaws no doubt, but the series will surely make you think of the trans community and their problems in a deeper way.

Director Ravi Jadhav's Taali narrates the obstacle-filled journey of Shree Gauri Sawant, a transgender activist, and her fight for third-gender recognition rights in India.

Running back and forth, the six-episode series tells the in-depth story of Ganesh's journey to becoming Gauri, from her fight as a boy to recognising her true self and fighting against the orthodox thinking about transgenders. The show starts in a classroom, where Ganesh (played by Krutika Deo) expresses his desire to become a mother one day instead of a police officer like his father. Soon after the flashback of his childhood days, we are introduced to Gauri (Sushmita Sen), who is selling her jewellery for her children and is waiting for the biggest court judgment.

Set on the day when the historic court judgment came out, the story then starts with Gauri, who is getting interviewed by a journalist named Amanda (Maya Rechal McManus). While they wait for the important judgement, Gauri narrates her entire life to Amanda, from her childhood days, her late mother, and her father, whom she's not been in touch with for the past 16 years, recognising herself as a transgender person and leaving home at a tender age to create her own identity.

Created by Kartk D Nishandar and Arjun Singh Baran, Taali will surely make you think about the trans-community that is still being neglected. But it fails to create an impact.

From the first frame, the series feels overdramatic. Especially when you are making a biopic, the one thing that makers should keep in mind is how to make it as realistic as possible- to make it more relatable to the audience. The intentions of the makers might be good, but in the end, the execution is what matters. And, unfortunately, Taali lacks it at this point. The writing of the show is simple, but it is not presented well.

Some scenes of the show don't even make a connection with the plot, or they are fused with drama with filmy dialogue intact.

In a hurry to cover all of Gauri's life struggles, the challenges she faces, the changes she brought to society, and what she did, the show loses its charm. Some scenes of the show are so well-shot that they are bound to create an impact on you, but at the same time, due to an exaggerated narrative, a lot feels fabricated.

The cast of the show is fantastic and kind of saves the show to an extent. Playing a transgender person is not an easy thing, but Sushmita has done it with perfection. There is no denying why Sen is the ultimate diva: her confidence exudes in every frame, her eyes shine, and the way she has recited the dialogues, whether it's young Ganesh or fierce Gauri, her performance deserves all the praise. Apart from Sushmita, the other actor who stands out is Krutika Deo; her performance as young Ganesh deserves applause too.

The other cast members of the show, like Sheetal Kale as Nargis, Ankur Bhatia as Navin, and other supporting cast members, have done a good job as well.

Final Verdict: A big applause for the makers for bringing the inspiring yet tragic story of Shreegauri Sawant to the screen. Apart from all the flaws, Taali is a must-watch for Sushmita's charismatic performance and Shreegauri's fight against all odds.

Taali review: Sushmita Sen is an absolute winner in this mediocre series

Heady scents fill the air as skilled pickers in India pluck white jasmine before the still fresh buds are rushed for processing into a valuable ingredient for global perfumes.

Jasmine only issues its powerful scent when it blooms at night, and pickers must select only the ones yet to open.

"We know which one to pick," said Malarkodi, who gave only one name, as she snapped her fingers carefully to pluck the buds, tucking into her hair a few flowers that had already bloomed.

"There is no use of these... but I like the smell," she said.

Jasmine's fragrant flowers have been used for millennia in India to honour the gods, and the scent is a key part of world-famous perfumes.

In the ancient city of Madurai in southern India, jasmine is omnipresent -- attracting buyers from some of the world's most recognisable perfumes, including J'adore by Dior and Mon Guerlain by Guerlain.

"It is one of the most expensive oils in the world," said Raja Palaniswamy, a director of Jasmine Concrete, which squeezes vast quantities of jasmine to create a few precious drops of delicious-smelling essence.

The women picking the buds earn around $1.50 a day per day for about four to five kilograms -- with each kilogram made up of around 4,000 buds.

Once picked, the jasmine is rushed to market, selling for anything between 200 and 2,000 rupees ($2.40-$24) a kilogram on special days.

- 'Expression of love' -

The jasmine of Madurai, an Asian variety with the scientific name Jasminum sambac, was given a "geographical indication" tag from the World Intellectual Property Organization in 2013, which noted its "deep fragrance".

"It is lush, it is rich, it is vibrant," said Thierry Wasser, perfumer and "nose" at French beauty house Guerlain, speaking to AFP while visiting the jasmine operators.

The jasmine in Madurai has a "smoothness... and something floral which is immutable," Wasser added. Wasser sources the jasmine oil he uses from Palaniswamy's company.

As well as Guerlain, Palaniswamy said his company sells jasmine oil to companies including Bulgari, Dior and Lush.

In Madurai, the bright, white flower can be found in the homes of the city's residents, as strings fastened by women to their hair -- and in the sprawling 14th-century complex of the Hindu goddess Meenakshi, considered the guardian of the city.

Meenakshi is depicted holding a parrot, a bird associated with love.

Every night, people surround a shrine of the goddess with fragrant jasmine flowers as she retires with her husband Shiva in a grand, symbolic ceremony.

"When you understand that the purpose of this flower is the celebration of love and brotherhood and family and friendship; when you smell it, it takes another dimension," Wasser said.

"And to me this flower is the expression of love. Period."

-'Real fragrance' -

The process to extract the oil requires long hours of labour.

The women who pluck the jasmine -- be it for their deity, weddings, funerals or expensive perfumes -– have no time to romance its appeal.

In a jasmine field on the outskirts of the ancient city, women tenderly move the branches of the bush, looking for the perfect bud.

The processing factory runs around the clock in harvest season, with workers raking out fresh-picked flowers and waiting for the oblong-shaped buds to bloom.

"The minute it starts blooming, it starts emitting its fragrance," Palaniswamy said.

Late in the night, as the jasmine's sweet scent fills the air, workers collect the blooms and load them into extractors.

The freshly picked jasmine is immersed in a solvent to absorb the fragrance molecules to give a waxy extract called concrete.

The concrete is further processed with alcohol to remove the waxes carefully, which then results in a potent absolute. This absolute becomes the ingredient in perfumes.

Around 700 kilograms of fresh jasmine is reduced to just one kilogram of oil, selling for around $4,200, Palaniswamy said.

But Amsavalli Karuppuswamy, who runs a stall outside the flower market where she threads flowers into garlands, said the fresh jasmine will always outweigh any oil.

"I will continue to do this job till I die... women like jasmine, so that is why we are doing this," she said.

"The scents are not worth as much as the original jasmine flowers -- nothing can match the real fragrance of the jasmine."

A new couple in town? It seems like Shakira is all set to move on in her life, leaving the past in the past. The pop star's love life has been much in discussion since her split with Gerard Pique in June last year. Recently, Shakira has again sparked dating rumours, this time with Canadian rapper Drake.

Shakira and Drake, the two famous names in the world of music, were recently spotted exiting a party in the early hours of Sunday in West Hollywood, California.

Romance rumours started doing the rounds after Shakira left the party just a few minutes after Drake.

While the two of them were not photographed together, a source told Daily Mail, "the 46-year-old superstar and Canadian rapper, 36, were both seen leaving 'within minutes of one another at 3:25 a.m.'"

At the party, Shakira looked stunning in the orange top paired with blue jeans. Meanwhile, Drake was wearing a blue jacket with matching distressed jeans and a white shirt.

Since Shakira's much-publicised split from her long-time partner, a lot of names have been attached with her.

The most recent one was Formula 1 racing driver Lewis Hamilton. The duo sparked relationship rumours after they were spotted spending time together.

A source close to the rumoured couple told a publication that they were "growing closer.''

"They're spending time together and in the 'getting to know you' stage. It's fun and flirty," the source told People. However, a journalist close to the singer revealed there is "nothing serious" between Shakira and Hamilton.

Sunny Deol's Gadar 2 got a warm welcome from the audience. The movie is the sequel to the 2001 blockbuster film of the same name that went on to become a cult classic. After a long wait, the movie was finally released in theatres on August 11 and raked in outstanding numbers on the first day of its release. As per the box office number tracker Sacnilk, the film collected around Rs 40 crore on its opening day. With impressive numbers, the film has become the second-highest opener of this year after Shah Rukh Khan's Pathaan, which is still in the top spot. The blockbuster film opened up with Rs 55 crore. However, the film has outperformed Prabhas' mega-budget Adipurush. The occupancy levels of the film shows are very strong. On the opening day, the film saw an occupancy of over 60% on day one and 86% in night shows. #SunnyDeol unleashes his power… All pre-release calculations / estimations go for a toss… #Gadar2 RUNS RIOT at the #BO, is SENSATIONAL on Day 1… FLYING START all over… SECOND HIGHEST OPENER OF 2023… Fri ₹ 40.10 cr. #India biz. Gadar 2 Box Office: Sunny Deol's film become Bollywood’s second-biggest opening of 2023

Diljit Dosanjh's Punjab 95 has been reportedly pulled from the lineup of the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). In July 2023, the makers announced that the film was set to premiere at the renowned film festival this year. However, Variety has reported that the film has been removed from the lineup as there is no mention of the film on the festival website.

However, there has been no official statement released by the festival or its makers.

A source has also told Variety that there are various ‘political forces at play’ in the film being pulled from Toronto Film Festival. Canada has the second-largest Sikh population in the world after India.

The movie is based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, played by Dosanjh in the movie. The movie is directed by Honey Trehan, who has previously helmed Netflix's thriller Raat Akeli Hai.

As per the social media description, the film is the story of Khalra "uncovering murderous corruption during Punjab’s period of insurgency."

After Operation Blue Star, the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her security guard, and the 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots, the police were empowered to detain suspects.

Khalra was a director of a bank in Amritsar, a north Indian city in Punjab State, India. Khalra investigated the illegal killings and cremations of thousands of people involving the Punjab police, who refused to cooperate during the Militancy Period. Khalra was last seen in September 1995 outside his house in Amritsar. Six police officers were convicted for his kidnapping and murder in 2005.

The film was earlier named Ghallughara, a term used to refer to the massacre of Sikhs. Backed by production company RSVP Movies, the movie applied for certification from the Central Board of Film Certification in December 2022, however, it took six months to pass the film. The Indian board cleared the film with 21 cuts including the title change.

Rani Mukerji reveals she suffered a miscarriage in 2020, here's why she kept it hidden

Disney on Wednesday reported a loss for the most recent quarter, with the number of subscribers to its streaming service shrinking again, but a pledge to crack down on password sharing sent shares higher in after-market trades.

The falling Disney+ subscriber numbers -- for the third consecutive quarter -- came as a crippling writers and actors strike hits the US entertainment industry, threatening the company's ability to produce content key to the streaming service's appeal.

"It is my fervent hope that we quickly find solutions to the issues that have kept us apart these past few months," chief executive Bob Iger, whose contract has been extended through 2026, said of negotiations with striking actors and writers.

Disney shares were up more than 2 percent to $90 in after-market trades despite the drop in streaming service subscriber numbers and a posted loss of $460 million in the quarter.

The unusual quarterly loss for the company was due to charges related to ending licensing agreements and yanking content from its streaming platforms.

Disney reported that its theme parks and cruise business continued to rebound from the pandemic, even while its traditional television offerings face a trend of ad dollars shifting to online viewing alternatives.

Iger said in the earnings call that streaming, film studios and theme parks will drive its growth in the coming five years.

"On the traditional TV side, losses continue to mount as CEO Bob Iger looks to offload what he now considers non-core assets, including the ABC Network," said Insider Intelligence principal analyst Paul Verna.

"These adverse trends are compounded by economic uncertainty, a soft ad market, increased competition in streaming media, labor disputes with screenwriters and actors, and lackluster box office numbers for Disney's films."

Pope points out 'disruptive possibilities' of Artificial Intelligence, calls for responsible use of technology

America is in the grip of a new trend of sorts, where a rising number of people are now living alone. Census data shows that in the nation, there are nearly 38 million adults who are living by themselves, and nearly half of these are older Americans.

Experts predict that the numbers are set to rise in coming years. Here's all you need to know about this trend and a phenomenon called grey divorces that is fuelling it.

Old and alone?

As per census data, nearly 16 million people aged 65 and older were living solo in 2022. This is three times the number of older Americans living alone in the 1960s.

CBS News reports that there are many reasons behind this shift in the society — including the economic gains made by women after entering the workforce and the changing attitudes towards marriage.

Also read | Explainer | Why is toxic fan behaviour becoming the new norm at concerts?

While researching on single households, researchers stumbled upon something called 'grey divorces'.

What are grey divorces?

The term 'grey divorce' was popularised about a decade ago by Susan L. Brown, co-director of the National Center for Family & Marriage Research at Bowling Green State University. It refers to the divorce of people over the age of 50, sometimes after decades of marriage.

"Well over a third of people who are getting divorced now are over the age of 50," says Brown.

"We just can't ignore that group anymore."

Also read | Explained | Spacecraft Mission Operations, the science that's steering Chandrayaan-3 to the Moon

Researchers found that between 1990 and 2010, in the US, divorce rates for people over the ages of 50 have doubled. The rise has continued over the years and is still going strong.

Some recent example of grey divorces that made the headlines are Bill and Melinda Gates, and more recently Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, who just this week announced separation after 27 years of marriage.

Divorce trends

Grey divorces are on a rise, both among celebrities and the general public, reports CBS. As per Brown, while divorce rates overall are declining, "older adults are really bucking the trend," this is especially true for those over 65 years of age.

"This means more and more people are going to be ageing, probably, alone, and outside of marriage, certainly," she says.

Susan Myres, a family law specialist based in Houston, says that while it may sound illogical to end a marriage this late in life, there are actually plenty of reasons behind this.

Also read | Explained | Rare 'brain-eating amoeba' haunts US, kills Georgia resident

"I had one client tell me, 'I do not want to die next to that man – I'm out'," she recalls.

This as per her happens when couples sometimes drift too far apart. In other cases, this is due to abuse or even shocking transgressions. Many older adults, especially those in their 80s, feel whatever time they have left is too precious to spend with the wrong person.

How pandemic helped rock the boat

Myers says that the pandemic has also contributed to this awakening.

As the world battled the Covid pandemic, more and more people realised the difference in opinions, perspective them and their partners may have when in comes to a number of things, like masks, vaccine, etc.

A CNN report from January 2022 showed that this difference of opinion also stretched to the vaccination of children.

Life as a single, older adult

As per the report, grey divorces also come with some financial troubles for the couple. Traditionally, couples tend to create a "nest egg" together. This means they save money for their old age, together.

Divorce cuts this in half, and some have reported a significant drop in their standard of living after a divorce later in life.

That being said, the rising trend of people living together isn't merely fuelled by 'grey divorce'. Many older people living on their own as per the researchers were widowed and a growing share reported never being married.

"There are many more of us than people realise who don't see living single or living alone as some sort of burden, but instead embrace it as something that we really just love," says researcher and psychologist Bella DePaulo.

Trend set to intensify

Currently, around 28 per cent of people over the ages of 65 are living alone in the US. This number has, for the most part, stayed consistent in recent years.

However, as per CBS News, this number is climbing, as the Baby Boomer generation — most of them aged 59 to 77 — gets older.

"We just can't ignore that group anymore." Also read | Explained | Spacecraft Mission Operations, the science that's steering Chandrayaan-3 to the Moon Researchers found that between 1990 and 2010, in the US, divorce rates for people over the ages of 50 have doubled. Divorce trends Grey divorces are on a rise, both among celebrities and the general public, reports CBS. Also read | Explained | Rare 'brain-eating amoeba' haunts US, kills Georgia resident "I had one client tell me, 'I do not want to die next to that man – I'm out'," she recalls. This as per her happens when couples sometimes drift too far apart. In other cases, this is due to abuse or even shocking transgressions. Many older adults, especially those in their 80s, feel whatever time they have left is too precious to spend with the wrong person. How pandemic helped rock the boat Myers says that the pandemic has also contributed to this awakening. As the world battled the Covid pandemic, more and more people realised the difference in opinions, perspective them and their partners may have when in comes to a number of things, like masks, vaccine, etc. A CNN report from January 2022 showed that this difference of opinion also stretched to the vaccination of children. Life as a single, older adult As per the report, grey divorces also come with some financial troubles for the couple. Trend set to intensify Currently, around 28 per cent of people over the ages of 65 are living alone in the US. This number has, for the most part, stayed consistent in recent years. However, as per CBS News, this number is climbing, as the Baby Boomer generation — most of them aged 59 to 77 — gets older. Sociologist Markus Schafer of Baylor University says this trend is a "two-sided phenomenon." On one hand, people are enjoying a greater autonomy, on the other, they are 'lonely'. Many studies have pointed to the fact that loneliness and social isolation come with significant health consequences. Most recently, in April, a study by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH/FHI) revealed that the end of a marriage could bring an individual serious cognitive health problems. Researches analysed the marital status of people aged 44 to 68 years over a 24-year period and found that a person's marital status affects their chances of clinical diagnosis of dementia or mild cognitive impairment after the age of 70. France arrests German man accused of holding his wife captive for 12 years

You must've seen videos of certain types of whales that hunt by merely swimming with their mouths open. Their prey just seems to swim right into their cavernous mouths and into their bellies. This behaviour is called filter-feeding. Using this, species like blue whales and baleen whales sift immense quantities of tiny prey from the ocean.

While fascinating, whales are far from the first species to use this hunting method. Fossils unearthed in China's Hubei Province show that a curious marine reptile that roamed the waters around 250 million years ago had hunting habits similar to the modern gentle giants of the sea — whales.

Blast from the past

Scientists estimate that the ancient reptile species existed in the Triassic Period, around 248 million years ago. They suggest that the marine reptile species called Hupehsuchus nanchangensis was lost to us during Earth's worst mass extinction.

While the reptile had a feeding style similar to the modern whale, Hupehsuchus was far more modest, at only about three feet (one metre) long.

Also read | Newly-discovered skull in China baffles scientists. Is it yet another lineage of humans?

Fossils indicate that the reptile had a long, narrow snout, a toothless mouth. It used its front and back limbs as paddles for steering, and its broad tail for forward propulsion.

Hupehsuchus nanchangensis' snout was made up of long, loose bones, with the lower jaw connected to the rest of the skull loosely. This, as per the scientists, allowed it to open its mouth wide to take in large amounts of water that contained small prey like zooplanktons.

How similar were these reptiles to whales?

Not very, there's a very obvious, enormous size difference. Furthermore, while the feeding method is similar, scientists speculate that there might be key differences.

"The further the relationship between two animals, the more fascinating this phenomenon becomes," said the study's lead author paleontologist Long Cheng of the Wuhan Center of China Geological Survey.
"Baleen whales are mammals and Hupehsuchus are reptiles. Their affinity is so distant. And they appeared more than 200 million years apart," he added.

To sift through the ocean water for prey, whales use baleen plates, aka whale bone, that are plates made of keratin. However, fossils of the Hupehsuchus nanchangensis were missing baleen.

Also read | Not blue whale, this 40mn-year-old animal is largest ever to have lived on Earth

Researchers say that one reason for this could be that keratin does not fossilise well. Based on grooves and notches found on the fossil's jaw, they believe that the reptile had soft tissue which must've served as baleen.

Talking to Reuters, co-author of the research, palaeontologist Mike Benton of the University of Bristol in England said: "Altogether, this points to a soft pouch made of skin around the mouth and throat, as in modern baleen whales, and some kind of filtering device hanging from the jaws, like baleen - but the 'baleen' and skin are not preserved." The research was published on Monday in the journal BMC Ecology and Evolution.

Not very, there's a very obvious, enormous size difference. Furthermore, while the feeding method is similar, scientists speculate that there might be key differences. Watch "The further the relationship between two animals, the more fascinating this phenomenon becomes," said the study's lead author paleontologist Long Cheng of the Wuhan Center of China Geological Survey. Also read | Not blue whale, this 40mn-year-old animal is largest ever to have lived on Earth Researchers say that one reason for this could be that keratin does not fossilise well. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community.
BTS member Suga is all set to begin his mandatory military service soon. And before that, the K-pop star is making sure to make every moment special for his die-hard fans. The star gave a memory to all his fans by revealing his BTS friendship tattoo ''7''. However, it seems like his tattoo revealing has caused a major commotion inside a subway.

After wrapping his tour "The Final" at the KSPO Dome in South Korea on Sunday (Aug 6), the South Korean singer went live on Weverse. While having a chat with his fan, also known as Army, Suga went on to reveal his "7" tattoo, which every BTS member has been waiting for a while now.

After the big revelation, fans went berserk, and even some who were travelling back from the concert started screaming. This reportedly triggered a major panic in the public.

However, while half of the internet is blaming the BTS Army for the chaos, there have also been reports that there was a gas leak that led to chaos and panic at the Seoul subway station.

Suga's tattoo reveal and screaming

During the live streaming, Suga took off his shirt and revealed his BTS ink after a lot of fans urged their favourite singer to show off his group friendship tattoo. The BTS fans who were travelling back from the concert couldn't contain their excitement and started screaming inside the train, which led to panic. For the unversed, recently a lot of public stabbing incidents have been reported across South Korea. And, due to the sudden shouting, people panicked and started running around.

At the same time, Korea's SBS reported that there had been a few passengers who complained about the strange odour of gas. And that is what actually led to the stampede.

Strange gas smell led to commotion

SBS reported that around 6:08 pm, a report was received that there was a "smell of gas" inside a train on Seoul Subway Line 9, and a commotion broke out. As per the police and fire authorities, a passenger on an express train on Line 9 that was travelling toward Gimpo Airport Station said, "There is a strange smell. People are running around and falling."

However, when the train stopped at Sinnonhyeon Station, people started running off, and many passengers were left hurt and bruised. Even some were taken to the nearby hospital for medical help.

What did the police say?

After a massive backlash, some BTS fans claimed that the reason behind the panic was a gas leak instead of BTS fans screaming. However, another report by SBS claimed that the shouting of the BTS fans was partly responsible for the chaos.

Police later explained to SBS News that the issue was a “happening that occured due to the screams of foreigners who had been watching a BTS video in the subway.”

“We tested for any gases and we did not find any gas or harmful gases, or things like that. We helped all passengers evacuate from the station and on to level ground…”

Some eyewitnesses took to their social media handles and shared that it was actually BTS fans who screamed and were responsible for all of that, and considering the panic atmosphere, people started running around.

Shocking! Did BTS member Suga's 7 tattoo reveal lead to stampede at Seoul subway station?

Bollywood actors Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover welcomed their little bundle of joy, Devi, last year on November 12, 2022. Ever since then, the parents have been continuously sharing happy and joyful videos and photos with their little angels. However, recently, Bipasha revealed her daughter's secret health battle.

On Saturday, Bipasha and Neha Dhupia sat down for a long discussion on the journey of motherhood. During the chat, Basu revealed the tough few months after the birth of Devi that the couple had gone through as new parents. She went on to reveal that just three days after Devi's birth, doctors told the couple that she had two holes in her heart.

In a chat with actress Neha Dhupia on Instagram Live, Bipasha broke down in tears as she shared that her daughter went through open heart surgery when she was three months old.

Bipasha Basu breaks into tears as she talks about daughter Devi's open heart surgery

Happy birthday Kajol: A look back at her most memorable roles

Nature is brutal. A gruesome, rare video captured recently is now going viral on the Internet. In it, a killer whale can be seen "slurping" the liver out of a live shark.

Gruesome scene

The gruesome video on YouTube shows the moment an orca tears into the stomach of a massive 30-foot (nine metres) long whale shark before removing its liver.

Also read | Not blue whale, this 40mn-year-old animal is largest ever to have lived on Earth

In the video, other nearby orcas can be heard clicking excitedly in a frenzy as their fellow killer whale swims away from the now dead shark that sinks lifelessly to the depths of the ocean.

A matter of seconds

Talking to Live Science, James Moskito, CEO of the California-based ocean tour operator Ocean Safaris, who captured the video during an expedition to the Gulf of California, said: "The killer whales start coming in and next I know they're biting the bottom of it (the victim shark)".

"It's literally over in a matter of seconds," remarks Moskito, adding, "They came in, they bit the bottom of the whale shark. Looks like they slurped in the liver and then the whale shark just fell and descended down, with no movement — I'm assuming it was dead."

The video was captured back in April. You can watch it here — viewer discretion is advised:

As per Moskito, he and his companions later saw the orca pod attack and kill another whale shark. He recalls that they saw a whale shark "just thrashing at the surface with a killer whale attached to it."

Why is the video rare?

While, earlier, scientists have seen instances of orcas attacking juvenile whale sharks — there's also filmed evidence — this footage, as per Live Science, may be the first known video of killer whales attacking an adult whale shark.
