This is Haim’s first movie, but she has a seasoned performer’s presence and physical assurance. Her expressive range — her face drains and fills as effortlessly as if she were handling a water tap — and humanizing lack of vanity are crucial, partly because she’s a delight to watch and because Hoffman is a frustratingly limited foil.</p>

John Hilgert was the second youngest of 10 victims to lose his life to the fatal stampede after a sudden surge in crowd causing a stampede at the opening night of the music festival in SCott's hometown Houston, Texas, on November 5.</p>

The teenager’s parents, Chris and Nichole Hilgert, filed their lawsuit on Wednesday against Scott, event organizer Live Nation Worldwide and others for “gross negligence” and “reckless disregard” for Hilgert’s safety that ultimately costed his life, according to reports.&nbsp;</p>

“The pain of our loss from our son John not making it home alive from an event such as this is intolerable. He was a beautiful young man who simply wanted to enjoy his first concert event with friends, whom he treasured spending time with more than anything else," the dad said in a statement, according to a news outlet.</p>

“This pain should never be felt by anyone over a loved one attending a live concert. There is no excuse for the poor crowd design, event execution and lack of response that was exercised at this festival that resulted in the tragic death of our son and nine others along with scores of other people that were innocently injured,” the father’s statement continued.</p>

The lawsuit is to hold the defendants accountable for “failure to provide adequate security personnel to implement crowd control measures, proper barricades, and failure to provide a sufficient amount of emergency medical support,” states the court filing, according to news reports.</p>

This new case is among 150-odd lawsuits filed by around 600 people who claim they were injured at the ill-fated event, according to a report by the Houston Chronicle.</p>

Tina Turner’s famous Versace dress that she had worn during her tour in the ’90s is on its way to becoming an NFT, all thanks to her former stylist Wayne Scot Lukas.</p>

Lukas had created the skirt and blouse combination in Swarovski crystals with the late Gianni Versace. Reports say NFT company ViciNFT will auction it at NFT BZL during Miami Art Week, which starts at November 30.</p>

The NFT will also include 111 images of supermodel Kara Young modeling the dress, its original sketches and fashion notes coming straightly from Lukas and Versace, and an excerpt from Lukas’ upcoming memoir about the origins of the dress, titled 'Simply the Test'.</p>

“Tina wasn’t going to wear the dress because it arrived to opening night of her show in Paris so late. It needed a police escort to get to the venue,” Lukas told a news outlet.</p>

Lukas had mentioned in the past that he had despised Donatella Versace for taking all the credit for the dress, when he was the one who had actually designed it and convinced Turner to wear it in the first place.&nbsp;<br />
“Tina hated Versace! She was all about Armani,” he said, reportedly.</p>

In fact, he added that the singer she was so against wearing Versace that it had created little differences between her and Elton John.</p>

The photo was first displayed on November 12 and faced backlash almost instantly from some netizens as well as the local media.</p>

The Beijing Daily described the model's face as "gloomy face" and "sinister eyes".</p>

"The photographer is playing up to the brands, or the aesthetic tastes of the western world. For years, Asian women have always appeared with small eyes and freckles from the Western perspective, but the Chinese way to appreciate art and beauty can't be distorted by that," the editorial piece read.&nbsp;</p>

China Women's News said that the picture of the model with "swollen single eyelids" made people feel "uncomfortable".</p>

Chinese Internet users have also pointed out that the photo was similar to Chen's photo series from 2012 that she had shot for i-D Magazine.</p>

Others, however, protested. One Weibo user saying, "Why can't a Chinese woman with small eyes also be considered beautiful? I don't see any problem with this."</p>

On Wednesday, Chen said in her statement that she had "reflected deeply" and felt the need to issue an apology after scanning through "nearly every negative comment" about her artwork.<br />
"I was born and raised in China. I deeply love my country. As an artist, I'm totally aware of my responsibility to document Chinese culture and showcase Chinese beauty through my work," she said.</p>

Using profanities has always been a major part of your content, and has always worked for you. What if there’s ever a ban. What’s your alternative? I personally do not support any kind of cyber bullying, trolling, abuse and harassment in any form and I have disclaimers. I do get shocked when people react to my videos as a medium of profanity harassment because that’s a total disrespect to my art. My passion isn’t built on any form of exploitation. There is a hairline difference between roasting and commentary videos. The formats are the same but the nature is completely different. A roast is meant to be silly, ridiculous, hard hitting whereas a commentary is meant to be opinionated, quirky and relatable. I use a character who is frustrated, angry and aggressive to play out my scenes which are pre-recorded shoots and not lives. Yes, roasting is a new concept for a lot of people but I believe it will be full blown in the next decade as sensibilities become more cosmopolitan. You can’t always expect people to say nice things about you, you need to be a sport when the bad things come your way, because everyone will have an opinion that you may not like. I mean I was roasted a hundred times before I even took this profession up seriously and I took all of it in my stride. Will you ever be Carry, the actor, and no longer Carry, the content creator? Carry is multi-faceted and I like to view life through rose colored glasses. I can multi-task between roles and that’s my pedigree. But my first and last love will be content creation, everything I attempt in between is a gamble. My end goal was to positively impact many lives through my art and passion. Just like other performers I am here to entertain and allow the common man to escape momentarily from the clutches of mundane living. If you look around, notice how cases of stress and depression are constantly on the rise and people have forgotten how to be just content and happy, amongst all these the most fulfilling part is that I can inspire people to live optimistically. I can bring smiles to a million faces without having to actually do this in person and that’s so motivational. I am so grateful to the audience because without them I don’t think it would have been possible. I consider myself lucky and blessed to be in this position where people love me unconditionally. Ilaiyaraaja, Indian musical maestro, makes his Times Square billboard debut

<p>The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra was amused as four trumpet players, all but one under the age of 30, took their position in the rehearsal room late Tuesday morning.</p>

<p><br />
“It’s the Young Lions!” called out baritone saxophone player Paul Nedzela, referring to the coterie of sharp-dressed, tradition-minded bop up-and-comers who rose during the Reagan and Clinton administrations while edging jazz toward a concert art with a classical music-style repertoire.<br />
That got a laugh.</p>

“We tried that in the ’90s,” said bassist Carlos Henriquez.</p>

Soon, Wynton Marsalis, once the pride of those young lions, called the band to order from his perch in the trumpet section and the orchestra lit into “Windjammers,” a Marsalis cooker arranged to showcase the quartet of guest trumpeters, some of them students. The four swapped bars, breaks and occasionally expressions of wonderment, as if they couldn’t believe they were — to borrow a title from Marsalis’ own repertoire — in this house, on this morning.</p>

<p><br />
The occasion: the kickoff to Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 34th concert season — and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra’s first indoor New York City performance since the COVID-19 shutdowns. The season will include a tribute to Chick Corea, who died in February; a celebration of the centennial of Charles Mingus; and three concerts showcasing extraordinary female singers Dianne Reeves, Catherine Russell and Cécile McLorin Salvant.</p>

Excitement about the reopening pulsed through the band.</p>

<p><br />
“To look at and see our audience, and to feel that energy, I’m going to be overwhelmed,” said Ted Nash, a saxophonist and composer. “We’ve been doing all this virtual stuff, but to create together a sound field and an energy field in person, where all the sounds meld together, this is why I do this.”<br />
Marsalis was quick to say he didn’t name this weekend’s concerts — “Wynton at 60” — which celebrate his new status as a sexagenarian with a program of his originals from four decades.</p>

<p><br />
Still, despite a warm, even gentle demeanor, there was no doubt he was in charge, announcing the order of soloists at rehearsal or tweaks to the charts. But when a soloist occasionally asked how to approach a section, he replied, “Just do what you all want.” Or, “It’s you playing it.”</p>

<p><br />
Freedom within a structure, of course, separates Jazz at Lincoln Center from other major performing arts institutions with a repertoire. So does Marsalis’ tradition of inviting young musicians to play on its biggest stage, the Rose Theater in the Columbus Circle complex.</p>

<p><br />
“It shows the generations working together,” he said. “When we started the orchestra, surviving members of Duke Ellington’s orchestra played. Marcus Belgrave played with Ray Charles. Sir Roland Hanna played with the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra. Jerry Dodgion and Frank Wess played with Basie. They passed on a lot of the feeling of the music and its identity and meaning to us. So, this is a continuation.”</p>

<p><br />
Chris Crenshaw, a trombonist, composer and arranger who has been in the orchestra since 2006, said, “We have a charge to keep. We have a responsibility. There’s so many things in all traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation orally or with music.”</p>

<p><br />
The responsibilities that come with serving as the artistic director and public face of a major arts organization has meant that, for Marsalis, the shutdown was never truly a shutdown. He pulled out his phone and thumbed through dozens of photos of score pages for upcoming projects (a tuba concerto, a bassoon piece).</p>

<p><br />
Versions of the band have toured the United States and the world, taking endless COVID-19 tests and often playing music from his politically engaged “The Democracy! Suite,” which boasts song titles like “Sloganize, Patronize, Realize, Revolutionize (Black Lives Matters).” Streaming concerts, from the vault and some fresh, have abounded and will continue. This season, any concert can be streamed for a donation of $10.</p>

<p><br />
The work helps distract from the losses that have mounted since March 2020, including Marsalis’ musician father, Ellis, and his friend and mentor, critic Stanley Crouch, in addition to more musicians than any institution could fully memorialize.</p>

<p><br />
“I tend not to dwell,” he said. “My dad, he said, ‘Everybody’s losing people. And when you focus too much on yours ...’” He let that thought drift away and then recalled something pianist John Lewis once said to him. “‘To focus too much on even something negative is a form of deep ego.’<br />
“You got to keep moving forward, keep being productive and trying to create the world you envision,” Marsalis added.</p>

<p><br />
At 60, Marsalis, who won a Pulitzer in 1997 for “Blood on the Fields,” his oratorio about slavery, sees a world in which democracy itself is imperiled, and “the intellectual class still always wants the Black man to be a fool on all levels.” His humanism, though, buoys him.</p>

<p><br />
“You can subvert the Constitution and make it harder for people to vote, make it more difficult for government to work,” he said. “But there’s always voices that defend the integrity of the document, which is changeable — it’s not set in stone.”</p>

<p><br />
He shifted quickly back to the subject upon which he has most often stirred controversy.</p>

<p><br />
“Music is the same. You can be glib enough to undermine the integrity of it and be successful. But there’s always just enough voices who believe in the integrity of it.”</p>

<p><br />
Those young trumpeters, in his estimation, count among those voices. Now a Juilliard student, Camargo said she never would have attempted composition without the impetus of the contest, where, in 2018, she won awards for composing as well as for soloing.</p>

“When people ask me what was one of the best days of your life, I always go back to that moment,” she said. “Wynton took me backstage and gave me compliments and advice. He doesn’t sugarcoat it; he tells you what you need to do to get better.”</p>

Gelin, a recent Juilliard graduate who self-released his debut album, also praised Marsalis’ generosity as a mentor — and his practical advice. Visiting New York from the Bahamas during his high school years, Gelin attended a free Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra concert in Queens and afterward worked his way through the line to meet Marsalis. The next day, Gelin played for him at his home and was surprised that so famous a figure invested such energy in urging a kid to dig deeper into developing his own voice.</p>

“I spent a lot of time in the Haitian church,” Gelin said. “One of the first things Wynton said to me was to listen closely to the singers there and how their vocal qualities reflect where they’re from.”<br />

On opening night Thursday, the four up-and-comers got their shot onstage. The orchestra’s 90-minute set surveyed some of Marsalis’ most crowd-pleasing compositions, including big-band stompers, ballads and percolating curios marked by his fondness for musical onomatopoeia, with muted horns aping the buzz of bees and the keening of train whistles.</p>

The 15-member ensemble tackled “The Holy Ghost,” from Marsalis’ “Abyssinian Mass,” and he delivered a bracing, unamplified solo on a quartet treatment of Gordon Jenkins’ “Goodbye” that he dedicated “to all the people who have lost someone and didn’t get to tell them goodbye.”</p>

But the most boisterous crowd response came soon after those young trumpeters took the stage. Camargo’s gutsy opening solo brought patrons to their feet and inspired Marsalis — her hero — to muse afterward, “She ain’t playing around at all.”</p>

That got a laugh. “We tried that in the ’90s,” said bassist Carlos Henriquez. Another laugh. Soon, Wynton Marsalis, once the pride of those young lions, called the band to order from his perch in the trumpet section and the orchestra lit into “Windjammers,” a Marsalis cooker arranged to showcase the quartet of guest trumpeters, some of them students. The four swapped bars, breaks and occasionally expressions of wonderment, as if they couldn’t believe they were — to borrow a title from Marsalis’ own repertoire — in this house, on this morning. The occasion: the kickoff to Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 34th concert season — and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra’s first indoor New York City performance since the COVID-19 shutdowns. The season will include a tribute to Chick Corea, who died in February; a celebration of the centennial of Charles Mingus; and three concerts showcasing extraordinary female singers Dianne Reeves, Catherine Russell and Cécile McLorin Salvant. Excitement about the reopening pulsed through the band. “To look at and see our audience, and to feel that energy, I’m going to be overwhelmed,” said Ted Nash, a saxophonist and composer. “We’ve been doing all this virtual stuff, but to create together a sound field and an energy field in person, where all the sounds meld together, this is why I do this.” Marsalis was quick to say he didn’t name this weekend’s concerts — “Wynton at 60” — which celebrate his new status as a sexagenarian with a program of his originals from four decades. Still, despite a warm, even gentle demeanor, there was no doubt he was in charge, announcing the order of soloists at rehearsal or tweaks to the charts. But when a soloist occasionally asked how to approach a section, he replied, “Just do what you all want.” Or, “It’s you playing it.” Freedom within a structure, of course, separates Jazz at Lincoln Center from other major performing arts institutions with a repertoire. So does Marsalis’ tradition of inviting young musicians to play on its biggest stage, the Rose Theater in the Columbus Circle complex. “It shows the generations working together,” he said. “When we started the orchestra, surviving members of Duke Ellington’s orchestra played. Marcus Belgrave played with Ray Charles. Sir Roland Hanna played with the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra. Jerry Dodgion and Frank Wess played with Basie. They passed on a lot of the feeling of the music and its identity and meaning to us. So, this is a continuation.” Chris Crenshaw, a trombonist, composer and arranger who has been in the orchestra since 2006, said, “We have a charge to keep. We have a responsibility. There’s so many things in all traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation orally or with music.” The responsibilities that come with serving as the artistic director and public face of a major arts organization has meant that, for Marsalis, the shutdown was never truly a shutdown. He pulled out his phone and thumbed through dozens of photos of score pages for upcoming projects (a tuba concerto, a bassoon piece). Versions of the band have toured the United States and the world, taking endless COVID-19 tests and often playing music from his politically engaged “The Democracy! Suite,” which boasts song titles like “Sloganize, Patronize, Realize, Revolutionize (Black Lives Matters).” Streaming concerts, from the vault and some fresh, have abounded and will continue. This season, any concert can be streamed for a donation of $10. The work helps distract from the losses that have mounted since March 2020, including Marsalis’ musician father, Ellis, and his friend and mentor, critic Stanley Crouch, in addition to more musicians than any institution could fully memorialize. “I tend not to dwell,” he said. “My dad, he said, ‘Everybody’s losing people. And when you focus too much on yours ...’” He let that thought drift away and then recalled something pianist John Lewis once said to him. “‘To focus too much on even something negative is a form of deep ego.’ “You got to keep moving forward, keep being productive and trying to create the world you envision,” Marsalis added. At 60, Marsalis, who won a Pulitzer in 1997 for “Blood on the Fields,” his oratorio about slavery, sees a world in which democracy itself is imperiled, and “the intellectual class still always wants the Black man to be a fool on all levels.” His humanism, though, buoys him. “You can subvert the Constitution and make it harder for people to vote, make it more difficult for government to work,” he said. “But there’s always voices that defend the integrity of the document, which is changeable — it’s not set in stone.” He shifted quickly back to the subject upon which he has most often stirred controversy. “Music is the same. You can be glib enough to undermine the integrity of it and be successful. But there’s always just enough voices who believe in the integrity of it.” Those young trumpeters, in his estimation, count among those voices. SNL: 'Shang-Chi' star Simu Liu jokes about his 2014 tweet asking Marvel for an Asian superhero

Arroz con gandules, or rice with pigeon peas, is a Puerto Rican classic, and Robin de Jesús wears the shirt with pride under a burnt orange jacket. When mounds of maduros (fried sweet plantains) arrive with our entrees, each is topped with a tiny Puerto Rican flag. De Jesús, 37, approves.</p>

The actor’s family is from rural Puerto Rico, and he grew up in a working-class community in Norwalk, Connecticut. Known for larger-than-life roles like a gay teenager who dabbles in drag in the movie “Camp,” a spirited maid in the Broadway revival of “La Cage aux Folles” and a boisterous interior decorator in both the play and film versions of “The Boys in the Band,” he wanted to diversify his work.</p>

Then along came “Tick, Tick … Boom!.” De Jesús was deeply intentional in auditioning for the role of Michael, an actor turned advertiser, in the film, directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda.<br />
“What kept coming up for me was, ‘I want a quiet performance.’ I want a quiet, subtle, nuance,” de Jesús said at lunch. “And I know that, if I do that, I can showcase maturity.”</p>

The movie (in theaters and on Netflix) is an adaptation of a musical about the writing of a musical. The original “Tick, Tick … Boom!” was written by Jonathan Larson — who would later go on to write the rock musical “Rent” — and first performed in 1990. The film tells the tale of an aspiring composer (also named Jonathan and played by Andrew Garfield) pouring himself into yet another musical, this one called “Superbia.” It takes place in the early ’90s, against the stark backdrop of the AIDS epidemic.</p>

As his 30th birthday looms, Jonathan’s anxiety manifests as a persistent ticking. He worries about the upcoming workshop of “Superbia,” upon which everything seemingly hinges — and about whether he can succeed in the performing arts at all.</p>

Michael, his former roommate and best friend since childhood, has tapped out of the threadbare artist lifestyle, opting instead for a plush career in advertising and a glittering high-rise apartment. He was tired of waiting for hours in line for an audition, just to be cut off after six measures of a song and called the wrong name: “Juan, Pedro, Carlos, lo que sea.”</p>

That’s not to say that Michael has hardened into a formal shell; he stays playful and supportive of Jonathan’s dreams. We first meet him visiting Jonathan at work in the Moondance Diner, where he drops off copies he made of the “Superbia” script.</p>

“Boo-boo, you need to ask yourself,” Michael tells Jonathan, “In this moment, are you letting yourself be led by fear? Or love?”</p>

De Jesús said, “I knew that Michael did not have to be pulled and buttoned up, that he was someone who navigated being an artist, a creative, someone who was down and hip, and cool with also doing advertising.”</p>

“It didn’t have to just be one thing,” he continued.</p>

Although de Jesús has appeared in many major movies, he assumed some other, bigger film star might snag the role of Michael. So he took a risk in his audition. Miranda was impressed.</p>

“I’ve seen a lot of productions of ‘Tick, Tick … Boom!’ and a lot of the time the guy that gets cast as Michael is someone who looks very at home being a business guy, very dapper, very smooth,” Miranda said in a phone call. “What’s fun about Robin as a choice is that you 100% believe this is an artist who thrives in this world. It’s an artist with a business suit on.”</p>

Miranda and de Jesús go way back. (So far, in fact, that de Jesús sang at Miranda’s wedding.) In 2005, de Jesús made his Broadway debut in “Rent” as a member of the ensemble and an understudy for Angel, a young drag queen. That same year, he joined the original cast of “In the Heights,” Miranda’s first musical, with a book by Quiara Alegría Hudes.</p>

“Quiara and I realized every time he had the ball, he just put a crazy spin on it and knocked it out of the park,” Miranda said of de Jesús. “I am mixing my tennis and baseball metaphors, but so would Robin.”</p>

De Jesús earned a Tony nomination for his role as Sonny in “In the Heights.” He received subsequent nominations for “La Cage aux Folles” in 2010 and “The Boys in the Band” in 2019. This year, he presented at the Tony Awards with Andrew Garfield.</p>

But so many of his roles came across as youthful or outsize. De Jesús was ready for something fresh.</p>

“My other characters are like two-liter soda bottles that you shake up and you open,” he said. “Michael, you shake, but you leave closed. And I don’t get to play that often. I’ve always known I’m capable of it.”</p>

He was just waiting for someone to give him the opportunity — like many Black and brown artists, he points out.</p>

“The fact that I’ve been in New York since 2002, and my first month in New York, I repeatedly heard, ‘It’s a good time to be a person of color in theater,’” he said. “And here we are 20 years later.”</p>

And yet, to be Black and brown in New York’s arts and entertainment industry is a thing of beauty, he said, in “the way we’ve created our own cultures, and the way we uplift and promote joy for one another.”</p>

De Jesús’ best friend, his “nonsexual lifetime partner,” Dominic Colón, is part of that group of artists, too. Both men are gay and queer Latinos who live in the Bronx, so close they can see each other's apartments (intentionally). After “Tick, Tick … Boom!,” de Jesús hopes to act in Colón’s play, “The War I Know,” a working-class, Puerto Rican story that mirrors their own.</p>

“I think he is a teacher,” Colón said. “I think he is a valuable lesson for artists of any age to trust in the journey. And it may not look exactly how you thought it was going to look when you were 18, but it works out in the way that it needs to, and it will continue to.”</p>
