Khan, on the other hand, is now in his&nbsp;50s and so the challenges were manifold. Does it translate well on screen? Only in parts.<br />

The beauty of 'Laal Singh Chaddha' lies in the fact that while some important messages are delivered through the narrative, it never turns preachy. It celebrates humanity above religion and caste —&nbsp;somewhat like Aamir's other film 'PK'. But while 'PK' did have Aamir Khan preaching about humanity, here the messaging is subtle and more layered. At the onset, it is about a slow-witted Laal and the people in his life but when you look deeper, the film is a commentary on evolving socio-political scenario in India. Without taking sides, the film tries to reiterate that humanity is above religion. "Mazhab malaria paida kar sakta hai,"&nbsp;says Aamir to Vij's character in a poignant moment.<br />

The film takes a few liberties, especially while showing Vij's character who plays a fundamentalist and is saved by Laal during the Kargil war and then treated in an Army hospital. Slightly stretched from reality where the Indian army saves a Pakistani terrorist and then decides to not pursue him when he disappears into thin air after being treated at the Army hospital. Years later, when Laal meets him, Mohammad lives in Mumbai, is wheelchair-bound and more of a recluse wanting to go back home.<br />

Shot all across India by Satyajit Pande, the film's canvas is large and picturesque too. From Ladakh to Kerala, the characters are spread across various cities and states, each having an impact on Laal. The music by Pritam too is praiseworthy.&nbsp;</p>

Aamir Khan is known to get into the skin of his characters. Here too, as a turban-wearing Sikh, he adapts certain mannerisms from Hanks' portrayal but somehow appears to ham majorly. Wide-eyed with extra eyelashes, he speaks mostly in Punjabi and 'Hmms' more between sentences. On many occasions, Khan's Laal seems a caricature, in others, his performance reminds you of the characters he played in 'PK' and 'Dhoom 3'. It isn't also always very consistent.<br />

The film though has Kareena Kapoor Khan in top form. As the sad, beautiful, conflicted Rupa, Kareena adds a certain amount of warmth to the story. The actress delivers a restrained performance,&nbsp;similar as in 'Talaash' and totally steals the show in the limited screen time she has. It is so nice to see the actress evolving her craft with this film. Manav Vij and Mona Singh too deliver commendable performances in the film. Naga Chaitanya, in his Bollywood debut, wins heart as the endearing Bala who wants to quit the army and induct Laal into his family business of sewing underwears. Aamir and Naga share great camaraderie on screen. Some of their scenes are the highlights of the film.&nbsp;</p>

But I also loved Manav Vij's performance as Mohammad Paaji, a reformed extremist who is bemused and ultimately defeated by Laal's innocence in not realising he was there to kill him and his comrades in the Indian Army squad dispatched to take out a terrorists-occupied bunker during the Kargil War -- or die trying. Make no mistake, Gary Sinise was superb as Lieutenant Dan, but this is one aspect where I feel 'Laal Singh Chaddha' has outdone the original. Aamir in a chat with selected media recently revealed that during the pre-production of the film, the actor had wanted to cast his son Junaid Khan to play the titular role.&nbsp;<br />

The film begins with Colonel Parker going back in time on how he as a showrunner spotted Elvis during a local countryside music festival and took him under his wings.&nbsp;<br />

It also touches upon the singer's growing up years in black-dominated neighbourhoods in Mississippi and thus his music was majorly influenced by black artists who sang blues and jazz along with gospel music. A poignant moment at the beginning of the film has a young Elvis going into a trance while moving to a church song.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Another scene that stays on is one of the introductory scenes of Butler as the relatively unknown singer. Dressed in pink with heavy eye makeup, as the young Elvis walks in he gets booed for his looks and hair. The hall is silent when Elvis starts to tap his feet and eventually starts moving his legs vigorously to the beats and women slowly start losing it in the hall, wanting to grab him and get a piece of him almost. The performance led to the inception of the quintessential Elvis moves which at that time were termed as obscene and vulgar.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The film then goes on to highlight his rise to stardom, touches upon his service in US Airforce, his Hollywood career and his famous Las Vegas concerts which Parker had orchestrated for his vested interest.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Hanks, an actor par excellence, plays the wobbly, mysterious Parker to the hilt and also manages to make him the hero of Elvis' life. The relationship the two shared was complicated and the film muses on whether Elvis would have been such a huge star had it not been for Parker and his passion to make him this big.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The star of the film is Austen Butler as Elvis. Playing an iconic character on screen comes with huge responsibility and there is always a very thin line between emulating and becoming a caricature. Fortunately, Butler, who has even sung some of the songs, maintains a fine balance and delivers a class act. Butler doesn't look like Elvis, yet his performance grows on to you eventually.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The film also wins because of the fluidity that the filmmaker maintains in narrating the film with scenes transitioning in a musical format almost. The narrative keeps going back and forth, yet it never slips because of its effective storyline.&nbsp;</p>

<p>For die-hard fans of the King of rock and roll, the story of Elvis is perhaps not new. But the film's release is timely for a generation who have perhaps heard of the musician and some of his songs but wouldn't know the hysteria that he created in his heyday. The film is a compelling watch for the performances by Hanks and Butler and for the legacy the artist left behind which to date remains unmatched. 'Elvis' has released in theatres this Friday.</p>

The film begins with Colonel Parker going back in time on how he as a showrunner spotted Elvis during a local countryside music festival and took him under his wings. It also touches upon the singer's growing up years in black-dominated neighbourhoods in Mississippi and thus his music was majorly influenced by black artists who sang blues and jazz along with gospel music. A poignant moment at the beginning of the film has a young Elvis going into a trance while moving to a church song. Another scene that stays on is one of the introductory scenes of Butler as the relatively unknown singer. Dressed in pink with heavy eye makeup, as the young Elvis walks in he gets booed for his looks and hair. The hall is silent when Elvis starts to tap his feet and eventually starts moving his legs vigorously to the beats and women slowly start losing it in the hall, wanting to grab him and get a piece of him almost. The performance led to the inception of the quintessential Elvis moves which at that time were termed as obscene and vulgar. The film then goes on to highlight his rise to stardom, touches upon his service in US Airforce, his Hollywood career and his famous Las Vegas concerts which Parker had orchestrated for his vested interest. Hanks, an actor par excellence, plays the wobbly, mysterious Parker to the hilt and also manages to make him the hero of Elvis' life. The relationship the two shared was complicated and the film muses on whether Elvis would have been such a huge star had it not been for Parker and his passion to make him this big. The star of the film is Austen Butler as Elvis. Playing an iconic character on screen comes with huge responsibility and there is always a very thin line between emulating and becoming a caricature. Fortunately, Butler, who has even sung some of the songs, maintains a fine balance and delivers a class act. Butler doesn't look like Elvis, yet his performance grows on to you eventually. The film also wins because of the fluidity that the filmmaker maintains in narrating the film with scenes transitioning in a musical format almost. The narrative keeps going back and forth, yet it never slips because of its effective storyline. For die-hard fans of the King of rock and roll, the story of Elvis is perhaps not new. But the film's release is timely for a generation who have perhaps heard of the musician and some of his songs but wouldn't know the hysteria that he created in his heyday. The film is a compelling watch for the performances by Hanks and Butler and for the legacy the artist left behind which to date remains unmatched. 'Elvis' has released in theatres this Friday.

Tom Hanks crashes a wedding, his second in five years!

<p>Los Angeles is finally getting a museum for movies -- and it's about time, said Tom Hanks, as he welcomed journalists to a special pre-opening event Tuesday.</p>

<p>The world capital of filmmaking and home of Hollywood boasts museums for everything from natural history to selfies, but until now has never had one dedicated to the silver screen.</p>

<p>After decades of delays, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures opens to the public next week.</p>

<p>"It matters for Los Angeles to have this film museum," said double-Oscar winner Hanks, who serves as a trustee.</p>

<p>"We all know that films are made everywhere in the world, and they are wonderful films. And there are other cities with film museums.</p>

<p>"But with all due respect, a place like Los Angeles, created by the Motion Picture Academy... this museum has really got to be the Parthenon of such places."</p>

<p>Upon opening, the museum -- run by the Oscar-awarding Academy -- will be the largest film-dedicated museum in North America.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Drawing on some $390 million funding from Hollywood institutions old and new -- including Disney, Warner and Netflix -- and beyond, the building was designed by famed architect Renzo Piano.</p>

<p>Piano reworked a historic 1930s department store to house the museum's main galleries.</p>

<p>He added the gleaming, orb-shaped David Geffen Theater, which appears to hover above the museum's courtyard, inviting some obvious comparisons to the "Star Wars" films.</p>

<p>"Don't call this the Death Star!" joked Piano, at Tuesday's press conference.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Call it the Zeppelin. A Zeppelin to take you [to] a different world."</p>

<p>The museum presents a broad overview of more than a century of motion pictures from around the world.</p>

<p>Modern Tinseltown treasures include costumes from "Bram Stoker's Dracula," an orc from "The Lord of the Rings," the amphibian man from "The Shape of Water," and "Star Wars" droids C-3PO and R2-D2.</p>

<p>Older heirlooms include a "Rosebud" sled from "Citizen Kane," regularly named the best film ever made.</p>

<p>Only three wooden sleds were ever made -- on set, director Orson Welles wasn't happy with the first take, but wrapped filming after the second was thrown onto a furnace for the film's climactic scene, meaning the third survived.</p>

<p>"Do we need a movie museum? Yeah. Because we need to celebrate everything that this town has brought to the world," said Hanks.</p>

<p>The museum's temporary space opens with an exhibition of Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki's work, leading visitors through a "tree tunnel" inspired by classic "My Neighbor Totoro" to see sketches of flying castles and early character designs.</p>

<p>"We want to bring through all of the international and diverse stories of moviemaking through our galleries," museum director Bill Kramer told AFP.</p>

<p>After a star-studded opening gala Saturday, the museum opens to the public on September 30.</p>

Modern Tinseltown treasures include costumes from "Bram Stoker's Dracula," an orc from "The Lord of the Rings," the amphibian man from "The Shape of Water," and "Star Wars" droids C-3PO and R2-D2. Older heirlooms include a "Rosebud" sled from "Citizen Kane," regularly named the best film ever made. Only three wooden sleds were ever made -- on set, director Orson Welles wasn't happy with the first take, but wrapped filming after the second was thrown onto a furnace for the film's climactic scene, meaning the third survived. "Do we need a movie museum? Yeah. Because we need to celebrate everything that this town has brought to the world," said Hanks. The museum's temporary space opens with an exhibition of Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki's work, leading visitors through a "tree tunnel" inspired by classic "My Neighbor Totoro" to see sketches of flying castles and early character designs. "We want to bring through all of the international and diverse stories of moviemaking through our galleries," museum director Bill Kramer told AFP. After a star-studded opening gala Saturday, the museum opens to the public on September 30.
