Olympics 2020: Novak Djokovic marches on as rivals struggle in Tokyo heat

Isolation and the absence of family and friends have taken a toll on athletes` mental health at the Tokyo Olympics, with some struggling to cope with the challenges posed by the pandemic while carrying their country`s hopes on the global sports stage.

After her stunning exit from the women`s gymnastics team event on Tuesday, Simon Biles said she felt she had been carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. That burden seems to have been exacerbated by a year a grief, loss and restrictions tied to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Usually you hang out in the village, all that stuff," Biles said. "It does suck when you feel the weight of the world. There are no outlets with the amount of training that we do."

Athletes have seen their pre-Olympic training disrupted by lockdowns and restricted access to athletic facilities, and the postponement of the Games fuelled concern about qualification schedules and the ability to travel internationally without contracting the virus.

Their families and friends can`t cheer for them in the stands in Tokyo and their movements are heavily restricted.

The pandemic prompted the U.S. women`s gymnastics team to steer clear of the bustle of the athletes village and stay at a nearby hotel for security reasons, something that takes the shine off an Olympic experience.

"Not saying that we don`t have a great set up," Biles said. "We chose that to be COVID safe, the protocols and everything."

Biles said she had been able to keep in touch with family by Facetime and text messages, giving her "all the support that I absolutely needed."

"We have tons of resources available to us," Biles added. "But I wanted to tough it out to the last minute, but obviously it didn`t work that way."

U.S. swimmer Katie Ledecky, who also came into the Games with high expectations, said she understood the pressure Biles felt as an Olympian of her stature. She said their compatriots should be more concerned about what is happening in the world than whether she wins an Olympic title.

"Being Olympians it`s something that we all have to watch out for each other and help each other through and in times of need," Ledecky said after winning gold in the first 1,500 metres swimming event for women ever staged at the Olympics.

`A DIFFICULT ROAD`

Even prior to arriving in Tokyo, athletes were facing new and unfamiliar pressures linked to the pandemic. They had to find ways to train during lockdowns and qualify for the world`s biggest sporting event without compromising their health or that of their families and communities.

"It has been a difficult road since 2019," said gymnast Angelina Melnikova of the Russian Olympic Committee, who beat the United States to win gold in the women`s team event.

"When we found out that the Games had been postponed because of the pandemic, our training base was closed. We were in quarantine for a year and a half and trained all that time."

Other athletes contracted COVID-19 on their way to Tokyo, at the Games themselves or in the early stages of the pandemic, threatening to derail their years of gruelling work toward the Olympics.

British swimmer Tom Dean contracted COVID-19 twice in the run-up to Tokyo, forcing him to spend days in isolation and put his training on hold. The 21-year-old nonetheless won the men`s 200m freestyle gold on Tuesday to help Britain to its best ever start to an Olympic Games.

"I contracted COVID twice in the last 12 months," Dean said. "Sitting in my flat in isolation, an Olympic gold was a million miles away."

Other Olympians who contracted COVID-19 weren`t so lucky.

South Korean sabre fencer Oh Sanguk, who was hospitalised for a month with the virus, faded in his quarter-final against Georgian Sandro Bazadze, eventually losing 15-13.

"I feel like my physical strength has weakened, but every time I think about that, I feel my confidence slipping," Oh told Reuters ahead of his quarter-final on Saturday.

Like countless of people across the globe, Olympians have also lost loved ones to the virus. Biles` team mate Sunisa Lee, who won three medals at the 2019 world championships, lost both her aunt and uncle to the pandemic as she was preparing for Tokyo.

"On a podium, people see athletes, others see machines that are running and have to be position one," said Bernard Ouma, who coaches Kenyan runner Timothy Cheruiyot, the 1,500 metre world champion.

Daniil Medvedev lost his cool after a journalist asked him a question on Russian athletes carrying a 'stigma of cheaters' coming into the Olympic Games.

The reporter, whose first language was not English, asked him: "Are the Russian Olympic team athletes carrying a stigma of cheaters in these Games after the scandal and how do you feel about it?"

The question ticked off the world number 2 and he lost his cool. "That’s the first time in my life I’m not gonna answer a question, man. And you should be embarrassed of yourself," he said.

The Russian tennis star urged the press officer beside him to remove him from either the Games or the tennis competition. "I think you should [remove] him from either the Olympic Games, either the tennis tournament. I don’t wanna see him again in my interviews. Thanks," he fumed.

Medvedev walked away by saying that it was the first such incident in his life.

Earlier, Medvedev was visibly upset due to the scorching conditions for tennis in Tokyo Olympics 2020. He went up to the umpire and told him that he could finish his match but wanted to know who will take responsibility if he died.

The ITF's 'extreme weather policy' allows a 10-minute break between the second and third set if agreed by both players and Medvedev used that time to get a freezing cold shower.

"And then on the second set, I just had darkness in my eyes, like between every point, I didn't know what to do to feel better. Like I was bending over and I couldn't get my breath together so I was ready to just fall down on the court."

Russian Evgeny Rylov said the sky was the limit after breaking his country's barren gold medal spell in men's swimming by pipping team mate Kliment Kolesnikov and American defending champion Ryan Murphy in a thrilling 100m backstroke in Tokyo.

Touching the wall in 51.98 seconds, 0.02 ahead of Kolesnikov, Rylov became the first Russian man to win an Olympic swimming gold since the Atlanta Games in 1996 when Alexander Popov and Denis Pankratov both topped the podium twice.

"I was overwhelmed by joy ... now I just have to prove myself in other events," Rylov said at a news conference.

"I do understand the sky is the limit but I have achieved a very important result and of course I felt a huge relief."

The 1-2 finish for the Russians comes as they compete under the flag of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) at the Tokyo Olympics as part of sanctions for several doping scandals.

When asked about hearing Tchaikovsky instead of the Russian anthem at the podium, Rylov said they just had to accept it.

"Perhaps it was the best solution than having us miss the Games altogether."

The 24-year-old Rylov's gold also ended the United States' six Games winning streak in the event, but he said there was no "special rivalry" between the camps.

Despite his disappointment, American Murphy, who holds the world record of 51.85 which he set in Rio, was pleased that Russian swimmers were at Tokyo.

"It was really cool to see the Russians ... do really great and to be a part of that," Murphy said.

Murphy and Rylov will both be competing in the 200m backstroke when heats get underway on Wednesday. Murphy is the defending champion and the United States have also won that event at six straight Games.
Rylov, who started swimming aged six in Russia`s Novotroitsk, made his Olympic debut in Rio where he placed sixth in the 100m backstroke and won a bronze in the 200m.

Flora Duffy achieved instant national hero status when she won Bermuda’s first Olympic gold medal on Tuesday after delivering a dominant run leg for an emphatic victory in the women's triathlon on a stormy Tokyo course.

Duffy, 33, was part of a group of seven who broke clear at the start of the 40km bike but then stamped her authority on the race with a fantastic performance over the 10km run to finish in one hour, 55.36 minutes.

Georgia Taylor-Brown overcame a flat tyre near the end of the bike leg to chase back strongly and finish second, 74 seconds behind, bagging another silver for Britain after Alex Yee's in the men's race on Monday.

Katie Zaferes, world champion in 2019, won bronze for the United States to fully justify her discretionary selection after struggling for form.

The victory, in her fourth Olympics, caps a wonderful career for Duffy, as she becomes her country's second Olympic medallist after Clarence Hill took a heavyweight boxing bronze in 1976.

Duffy hailed it as "an incredible moment" and as Bermuda became the least populous nation to win a Summer Olympics gold its Premier David Burt sent his congratulations over Twitter, saying: "You've worked so hard and you've made an entire island proud!"

After a storm-delayed start Duffy was part of a group who exited the 1,500 metres swim closely together and got a jump on the main field.

That group slimmed to five, and built the gap to a commanding 80 seconds at the end of the bike, though the unfortunate Taylor-Brown lost 22 seconds on the final lap as a flat tyre meant she had to negotiate every slippery turn almost at a standstill.

By halfway on the run Duffy had forged 50m clear and a fired-up Taylor-Brown overhauled Zaferes at the end of the third lap.

"The first lap of the run was panic mode," said the Briton. "I think I definitely paid for it in the latter part of the run but it paid off."

She was never going to catch Duffy, however, and the Bermudan enjoyed every moment of her triumphant charge down the finishing blue carpet, clenching her fists in joy and celebration.

"I was very overwhelmed," Duffy said. "I didn’t know what to do, or what to think. It was a really, really special moment.

"Maybe I replayed a little bit of all that it took to get here. It's great to achieve a personal thing but it's bigger than me and will inspire the youth of Bermuda and show that competing on the world stage from a small island is really possible."

Looking almost as happy was 39-year-old mother-of-three Nicola Spirig, the 2012 champion and 2016 runner up, who ran superbly to take sixth place in her fifth Olympics.

Tokyo Olympics: Simone Biles withdraws from women's gymnastics team all-around final

It was definitely a difficult task for Australian swimmer Kaylee McKeown to contain her emotions right after winning a gold medal at Tokyo Olympics 2020 in the 100m backstroke. In the wee hours of July 27, the 20-year-old powered to her first Olympic gold and a third win in three days for a Australian women's team. She launched a sensational fightback to go within a fingertip of her own world record. Canada's Kylie Masse had a lead from the start and held it at the halfway mark but McKeown came fighting to win in 57.47 with Masse taking silver and American Reagan Smith the bronze.

Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka's dreams of home Olympic gold were crushed by a 6-1, 6-4 defeat to Marketa Vondrousova Tuesday as her return to action came to an abrupt end.

The Table Tennis Federation of India Secretary General Arun Kumar Banerjee has made it clear that Manika Batra's refusal to have national coach Soumyadeep Roy by her side during matches at the Tokyo Olympics will be taken up for discussion once the contingent returns to India.

Banerjee said the executive committee will decide on the course of action that needs to be taken since it was unprofessional from Manika to call Soumyadeep the personal coach of Sutirtha Mukherjee.

"Personal coach is a wrong statement. Sutirtha plays in Soumyadeep's academy, but he is the national coach. To say her coach was not allowed with her is wrong on Manika's part. She knew before leaving from India what is the access of the coaches. All the players and coaches know the extent of access each has.

Manika had applied for personal coach, we had recommended as well. When you know his access, to come to Tokyo and demand that her coach be there in place of Soumyadeep is wrong. To call him the personal coach of Sutirtha is wrong as he had taken national camp even before coming to Tokyo. The criteria is fixed and I asked Soumyadeep to speak to manager MP Singh and report it as he is there. I strongly oppose this," he told ANI.

Asked if this was unwanted from Manika, he said: "What is on her mind I can't say. Surprised she brought this up here after knowing the criteria. I will discuss this with the executive committee and decide what action needs to be taken. We have to bring this up when we are back."
