Virat Kohli and Rahul Dravid's special message for Indian contingent at Tokyo Olympics 2020 - Watch

The Indian trio of Pravin Jadhav, Atanu Das, and Tarundeep Rai failed to rise to the tough challenge against South Korea in the quarter-final of the men's archery team event here at the Yumenoshima Ranking Field on Monday.

The South Korean team comprising of Kim Je Deok, Kim Woojin, and Oh Jinhyek defeated the Indian team 6-0 to reach the semis.

The Koreans put immense pressure on India from the first arrow as they shot 10-10-9 for a 29 and India responded with 8-10-10. Korea then proceeded to shoot 10-10-10 to capture 2 points.

In the second set, India responded well as they started with 9-10-10 and 10-10 but an 8 from Atanu Das on the last arrow handed another 2 points to the Koreans. The Koreans gathered two 59s in two sets.

The Koreans kept their cool and captured the third set with ease as they scored 56 even though they did hit the first 8 of the game. But in the end, it was enough as the Indian trio had filled their sheet with 8s and 9s and lacked consistency.

Tokyo Olympics: Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulates Bhavani Devi for her performance

Bhavani Devi''s Olympic debut ended with a second-round defeat in the women's individual sabre event but the Indian trailblazing fencer bowed out of the Tokyo Games with much promise, here on Monday.

The 27-year-old Bhavani, the first fencer from the country to qualify for Olympics, began her campaign with a confident 15-3 win against Tunisia's Nadia Ben Azizi but bumped into world number three and Rio Olympic semifinalist Manon Brunet in the next round, which she lost 7-15.

Bhavani's aggression yielded points against Azizi but French Brunet used all her experience to negate the tactics of the Indian, who lost two points for going out of the arena.

The Indian could score only one point each in the first two periods but came back well in the third.

Brunet was sharp and had better technique as she scored points from distance.

After trailing 2-8 going into the third and final round, Bhavani needed nothing short of a spectacular show in the final one but Brunet largely remained untroubled in the nine-minute and 48-second match.

Japan`s dynamic duo of Jun Mizutani and Mima Ito narrowly defeated long-invincible Chinese pair Xu Xin and Liu Shiwen to give the host country their first Olympic table tennis gold in the mixed doubles event on Monday.

Mizutani earned his third medal and Ito her second since the Rio Olympics, but a first gold for both paddlers -- and a first gold for any non-Chinese players since 2004.

The 32-year-old Japanese paddler hugged his compatriot the moment they wrapped up the title, but he said the embrace was so strong that Ito pushed back and told him, "It hurts".

Men`s world No.2 Xu and world champion Liu led after the first two games but Mizutani and Ito fought back to win the third game.

While the powerful Chinese made a brief comeback in the sixth game, the Japanese pair did not lose the momentum and trumped their opponents 5-11 7-11 11-8 11-9 11-9 6-11 11-6.

For Mizutani and women`s world No.2 Ito, who are from the same hometown and have known each other since childhood, the 4-3 win over Xu and Liu was sweet revenge.

They lost to the Chinese pair in the mixed doubles finals of the ITTF`s World Tour Grand Finals and World Tour Swedish Open in 2019 plus the World Tour German Open a year later.

"We`ve lost to China at the Olympic Games and at world championships numerous times, but we were able to take a revenge on all that at the Tokyo Olympics," Mizutani told reporters.

"I feel like I`m in a dream, that`s how happy I am."

UNACCEPTABLE DEFEAT

China have long enjoyed a reputation as the powerhouse in the sport, winning 28 of the 32 golds awarded since it was added at the 1988 Games, including all eight women`s singles titles.

Xu and Liu, who silently tucked their silver medals inside their pockets once they stepped off the podium, both said their defeat was "unacceptable".

"I had a hard time accepting it," Liu said at the press conference after the defeat. "I feel sorry for my team."

"I know all the fans had high expectations for this final," added Xu.

"It doesn`t matter what happened before the final, people will only remember who`s the champion and who stands at the top of the podium. I think this result to the team is unacceptable."

In the bronze-medal match, world No.1 mixed doubles pair Lin Yun Ju and Cheng I Ching of Taiwan had a 4-0 clean-sweep win against French duo Emmanuel Lebesson and Yuan Jia Nan.

Chinshanlo came close to completing a 123 kg lift in the clean and jerk, which would have been an Olympic record at that moment, but the judges reversed the decision. Soon after that Liao succeeded in lifting 126 kg.

The Chinese lifter`s record was then broken by Diaz who confidently lifted 127 kg.

Diaz, who said she would aim to participate at the next Games in Paris, held her hands to her face and burst into tears before embracing her coaches and clutching at the medallion around her neck.

Last year, Diaz had been stuck in Malaysia, where she stopped on her way to Peru for an Olympic qualifying event, for about five months under a government travel ban due to an outbreak of COVID-19. Diaz said she built a gym and trained with water bottles during that time.

On the podium, a still-tearful Diaz stood to attention saluting as she belted out her country`s national anthem at the top of her voice.

Bronze winner Chinshanlo was a gold medallist at the 2012 London Games but in 2016 she was stripped of a medal after failing doping tests in a re-analysis of samples.

The 20-year-old Ariarne Titmus gave a stunning performance to defeat the United States' five-time Olympic champion Katie Ledecky, who had an early lead and held it until the 350m mark when Titmus edged ahead and never looked back.

Ledecky even praised the gold medalist, as she said, "She definitely swam a really smart race. She was really controlled up front. I felt smooth and strong. I looked up at 300 metres and she was right there, so I knew it would be a battle to the end. I didn’t feel like I died or really fell off. She just had a faster final 50m or 75m and got her hand to the wall first."

She also praised her coach Dean Boxall and said, "He means everything to me. Coming into this race we knew what we had to do. "We didn't discuss what I wanted to do in the pool. It was more of a 'have fun' moment. We practised this for so long. I just knew what I had to do when I got out there."

World no.1 Novak Djokovic remained steady on his quest to become the first male player to complete the Golden Slam.

The Serbian, who is attempting to become the first man to win all four Grand Slam titles and Olympic gold in the same calendar year, had a 6-4 6-3 win over Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany in the men's singles.

The players were evenly matched at the start of the first set but the 20-time Grand Slam champion proved too strong, pouncing on Struff's serve while leading 5-3 to take the first set. An early break in the second secured the victory.

"It was a tough opponent for a second round... but you know, I'm very pleased with the way I felt on the court," Djokovic told reporters.

Tokyo Olympic organisers are not planning to reschedule more events for the Games, they said on Monday, as tropical storm Nepartak churned toward Japan's main island.

Rowing events have been moved due to the storm which is expected to head over Japan's northeast coast on Tuesday and could bring heavy rain to the capital.

"At this time there are no plans to change the schedule for any of the other events due to be held on Tuesday," Tokyo 2020 spokesman Masa Takaya told reporters.

The likely wind and rain will follow intense heat, which has caused one Olympic archers to collapse and had skateboarders complaining of unbearable conditions by 9 a.m.

The rain also threatens Tuesday's two medal games for softball. Canada, vying for bronze, said their flights home are scheduled for Wednesday with the next available potentially not until Saturday because the pandemic has limited options.

But their accommodation need to be taken over by newly arriving athletes sooner.

Tokyo Olympics: No plans to reschedule more events as storm approaches

Benjamin Savsek won Slovenia's first gold medal in the men's canoe slalom on Monday after barrelling down the white-water course in Tokyo almost four seconds ahead of his nearest rival.

Lukas Rohan from the Czech Republic took silver with Germany's Sideris Tasiadis, who finished runner-up in 2012, getting bronze.

Savsek paddled through the difficult course straight after his German rival in 98.25 seconds, making him the only finalists to complete the course in under 100 seconds.

That run brought an end to the dominance of Slovakia and France in the event in which they had won every gold medal since the 1996 Atlanta Games.

"It's a nice step up from world champion to Olympic champion. I am really proud to achieve this," Savsek said.

"The course was pretty hard today," he added at a news conference wearing the gold medal presented to him by French three-times Olympic slalom champion Tony Estanguet.

Slovakian paddler Matej Benus, who was aiming to better his silver in Rio de Janeiro five years ago, ended sixth with Martin Thomas from France fifth.

Cloudy weather at the Kasai slalom centre next to Tokyo Bay made conditions easier for competitors after they battled through baking sun and warm water in the heats on Sunday, but the hot Japanese summer still made the going tough.

"The heat today was not as big a problem, it was much better, but the water is still hot," Savsek said.

Australia's Jessica Fox, who will attempt to take the women's kayak title tomorrow, had described the course as being like "bath water".

Despite only a handful of people watching from the stands, Savsek's victory was greeted enthusiastically by his team mates, with at least one jumping into the warm water to celebrate his near perfect run.

"It's not so easy without spectators. We have just the Olympic Games where we can race in front of thousands of people," said Rohan, whose father and coach Jiri Rohan won silver in the canoe slalom pairs in 1992 and 1996.

The pairs race was dropped from the Games in Rio to make way for women's canoe slalom.

India's star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, who won a silver medal at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics 2020, now stands a chance of medal upgrade as China's Zhihui Hou is set to undergo a doping test, news agency ANI reported. The news comes just two days after she won the women's 49kg weightlifting gold. In case Zhihui fails the test, Mirabai will be the first women to ever win a Gold medal in weightlifting for India.

"She has been asked to stay in Tokyo and the test will be done. The test is definitely happening," ANI reported citing a source known to them. The rule clearly states that if an athelete undergoes a doping test and fails, then the silver medalist will be awarded the gold.

The 26-year-old Mirabai Chanu managed a total lift of 202 kgs (87kgs in snatch + 115 kgs in clean and jerk) to claim the silver medal. She had finished behind the Olympic champion Hou Zhihui of China, who set an Olympic record with a lift of 210 kgs (94+116). The news comes just two days after she won the women's 49kg weightlifting gold. In case Zhihui fails the test, Mirabai will be the first women to ever win a Gold medal in weightlifting for India. Athletes must wear masks throughout the Tokyo Olympic Games venues, including medal ceremonies, the International Olympic Committee said on Sunday (July 25), but according to a new policy they are briefly allowed to remove it on the podium for a photo opportunity.

Masks are mandatory across all venues, both inside and outside for all athletes, staff and media, as part of Games organisers' strict measures to combat the coronavirus.

"It's not a nice to have. It's a must have," said IOC spokesperson Mark Adams, responding to questions about the mask-less swimmers.

All 12 athletes from Australia, Canada and the United States on the podium for the women's 4X100 freestyle relay ceremony were mask-less, smiling to photographers.

The Olympic teams of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan had paraded mostly mask-less through the National Stadium at Friday's (July 23) opening ceremony, marking an awkward contrast with other national teams who covered their faces in line with COVID-19 protocols.

Organisers announced another 10 positive COVID-19 cases to Games-related individuals on Sunday, bringing the total to 132 cases since July 1
