Sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson, who was ruled out of the Olympics after being temporarily banned for testing positive for cannabis, on Sunday applauded Jamaica's sweep of the 100 metres led by Elaine Thompson-Herah`s record-breaking performance.

Thompson-Herah obliterated the Olympic record with a blistering 10.61 seconds sprint on her way to defend the title she won in Rio five years ago, becoming the second fastest woman in history and elevating herself to among the greats in the iconic 100m event.

Double Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce won silver while fellow compatriot Shericka Jackson took bronze.

"Congratulations to the ladies of Jamaica for the clean sweep," Richardson, who had been a Tokyo medal contender before the ban, wrote on Twitter. "Powerful, strong black women dominating the sport."

The 21-year-old Richardson streaked to victory in the 100m at the US Olympic trials in June, and was expected to be one of the top stars at the Games in Japan.

She represented the best US chance of a first gold since Gail Devers won in 1996, and after Marion Jones was stripped of the 2000 title for doping offences.

But things unravelled for her after she won the US trials with an impressive 10.86s and tested positive for cannabis and was banned for a month, which ruled her out of the tournament.

Richardson said she was dealing with the death of her mother at the time and the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) said that her ban was reduced to one month because she had used cannabis out of competition and it was unrelated to sport performance.

On Saturday in Tokyo, the lone American competing in the final Teahna Daniels finished seventh with a time of 11.02.

It was one of the fastest finals on record with six sprinters out of the eight finalists running under 11 seconds.

Silver medallist Fraser-Pryce, who said Tokyo 2020 would be her last Olympics, said the performances on the track showed how high the level of female sprinting has reached.

"I`m really excited that female sprinting is going (to) another level and that`s truly remarkable," she said after the race. "It speaks to the depth that we have in terms of females."

Richardson could be part of that future of the sport.

Former Australian skipper Ian Chappell has said that the T20 format was enough to take the sport into the Olympics amid ongoing discussion over the re-inclusion of cricket into the Games. The inclusion of cricket to the Olympics would be a game-changer considering the expected expansion of the game globally; it will also take the sport to a different level.

Addressing the same, Chappel said, "Apart from reducing the number of balls to obtain a terrestrial television deal, the reasoning behind the Hundred could well be that it improves the chances of cricket fulfilling the Olympic dream."

"This is often cited as a way to spread the game's popularity to a wider audience. Surely the T20 format could achieve that same outcome without yet another reduction," Chappell wrote in his column for ESPNcricinfo.

Chappell also wrote, "Cricket is a team game ideally played by 11 members a side. Performance satisfaction is a big reason why youngsters fall in love with the game. Administrators would do well to remember that before they rush into devising shorter forms of the game. The more the length of an innings is reduced, the greater chance that there will be players "just making up the numbers. Even those players crave occasional performance satisfaction."

Organisers moved the start of matches to later in the afternoon midway through the Games' tournament in Tokyo last week after players complained about the stifling weather conditions, with men's world number two Daniil Medvedev warning officials a player "can die" in the heat.

"The challenge is that we have nine days to play five events, and we have almost 200 players. The scheduling for the first two days is 48 matches each day, 12 courts with four matches a day," ITF President David Haggerty told reporters on Sunday.

"As you know, it could be a long day, but what we really need is 11 days, and more restful players."

"This will involve us talking to our other stakeholders and taking them along the journey, and certainly the players have been telling us that it's important to them to be able to train for two or three events."

"So I think that that's really the driving force - the athletes' voice, and them wanting to compete."

Kris Dent, ITF Senior Executive Director of Professional Tennis, said the sport's governing body had taken steps to make sure players were well-rested and to manage challenging weather conditions, such as reducing the number of sets played and introducing tie-breaks.

But organisers were unable to deal with the packed schedule of the Games, with many players competing in both the singles and doubles competitions.

"The key element really is about player rest... That's definitely a high priority for us, looking forward to Paris and to Los Angeles (2028)," Dent said.

Olympics: Tennis - Organisers seek to extend Games' schedule to 11 days for Paris onwards

Newly-reported COVID-19 cases in Olympic host city Tokyo surged to a record high of 4,058 on Saturday, the metropolitan government said, exceeding 4,000 for the first time and overshadowing the Games.

Nationwide cases totalled 12,341 as of 6:30 p.m. local time, public broadcaster NHK said, the highest ever for Japan and up 15% on the day, underscoring a rapid rise in infections across the country.

The new records come a day after Japan decided to extend states of emergency to three prefectures near Olympic host Tokyo and the western prefecture of Osaka its state of emergency for Tokyo to the end of August and expand it to three prefectures near Tokyo and the western prefecture of Osaka in light of the recent spike in infections.

Dressel, the world champion in the event, beat Hungary`s Kristof Milak, the gold medallist in the 200m fly, by 0.23 seconds.

The powerful American, who also won gold in the 100m freestyle, was the fastest out of the blocks and never looked in danger, though Milak came back hard, closing the gap down the straight.

Dressel has a busy morning -- he has the 50m freestyle semi-finals coming up and is likely to swim in the final of the mixed medley relay about 30 minutes after that.

McKeown, who had already won the 100m backstroke gold, turned up the pace on the final lap to power past Kylie Masse after the Canadian held the lead for the first 150.

The Australian won in a time of 2:04.68 with Masse 0.74 behind and McKeown`s teammate Emily Seebohm taking the bronze medal.

Australia`s women have now picked up six of the country`s seven gold medals in the pool.

The United States took silver as their two men finally bagged their first male golds in the sport, with three-time world champions France taking bronze.

It was an emotional triumph for Jonny Brownlee, who won individual bronze and silver in 2012 and 2016 and finally bagged a gold to enable him to share family bragging rights with double individual champion and big brother Alistair.

Jess Learmonth led Britain out, while Georgia Taylor-Brown and anchor leg Yee, the individual silver winners, completed the impressive all-round display.

The victory takes Britain’s medal tally to eight, including three golds, since the sport was introduced to the Olympics in 2000.

"The Olympics is complete – it feels absolutely amazing. My third Olympics and I can finally walk away with gold," said Brownlee.

"The Olympics is always special but to do it as a team is absolutely amazing."

The race format features teams of two men and two women, who each complete a short-course race of 300 metres swim, 6.8km bike and 2km run and makes for fast-paced action.

First-leg Learmonth had a lightning T2 to open a small gap going into the run but Britain, the U.S., Germany and the Netherlands were all together handing over.

It was carnage in the transition area after the first handover, with half the exhausted first-leg women scattered over the blue carpet and medical staff hauling them to their feet and dragging them clear as the heat took its toll.

The four teams remained together after the second bike leg but Brownlee flew out of T2 and immediately opened a gap, which he extended to nine seconds over the U.S. with a gutsy run on his last competitive appearance over the shorter distances as he plans to move up to Ironman.

Taylor-Brown swum superbly to stretch the lead to 23 seconds, with Taylor Knibb forging clear from the chase pack to leave the U.S. clear in second.

Taylor-Brown handed over to Yee, probably the fastest runner in the field with the 2018 British 10,000m track title to his name.

On the last leg double world champion Vincent Luis overhauled Morgan Pearson on the swim then drove on strongly to catch Yee on the bike.

Two years ago Luis beat Yee in a photo finish in the Tokyo test event but the young Briton made sure there was no repeat as he got a break in transition and poured on the power to immediately open a telling gap and he eventually won by 14 seconds.

Behind him Morgan Pearson overhauled Luis for silver.

"I was pretty scared taking over, the guys had been perfect and I wanted to do it justice," Yee said.

"When Luis came past I knew I just had to get on there as my run is my strength so I had to hang on. Then I just went for it right at the start of the run to get an early gap."

Poland scored an upset win in the inaugural Olympic 4x400 metres mixed relay on Saturday, with Dominican Republic picking up silver and the United States taking bronze.

The Polish team, comprised of Karol Zalewski, Natalia Kaczmarek, Justyna Swiety-Ersetic and Kajetan Duszynski, put on a gutsy performance inside the fan-free Olympic Stadium after posting the fastest time in Friday's heats.

It was the first Olympic medal for all four team mates, who cheered and embraced as anchor leg runner Duszynski crossed the finish line in a time of three minutes and 9.87 seconds.

The U.S. were the favourites after winning the event at the 2019 World Championships. But they almost did not make the final after they were disqualified for exchanging the baton outside the changeover zone in Friday's first round. Organisers later reinstated them, citing an official's error.

Notably absent from the U.S. relay roster was six-time Olympic gold medallist Allyson Felix, who was a part of the Americans' winning relay team in 2019 and is set to compete in the women's individual 400 metres on Tuesday in her fifth and final Games.

Indian boxer Amit Panghal (52kg) bowed out of the Olympics with a stunning 1-4 loss to Rio Games silver-medallist Yuberjen Martinez, beaten by the Colombian's relentless attacks and pace in the pre-quarterfinals here on Saturday.

The top-seeded Indian, who was making his debut in the Games, had got an opening-round bye. Panghal was put under pressure by the sprightly Colombian in the opening round itself but the Indian ensured that he connected better to claim the first three minutes 4-1.

But Martinez's pace should have set alarm bells ringing in the Indian corner. The Pan-American champion upped the ante in the second round, working relentlessly on Panghal's body with his uppercuts.

Panghal got little respite from the onslaught and found it tough to respond. Martinez's persistence brought him to level with the top star.

He made sure that there was no let-up in the intensity in the final three minutes and Panghal ended up being on the defensive. Despite this loss, the 25-year-old Panghal remains one of the best-performing Indian boxers in recent times, having secured a gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games, followed by an unparalleled silver medal at the world championships in 2019.

The diminutive Army man is also a three-time Asian medallist, securing a medal every time he has been at the continental showpiece. Martinez won the light flyweight silver medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics and will turn professional after the Tokyo Games.

His parents, who follow the pacifism-supporting Anglican church, were against him taking up the sport but eventually came around to support his ambitions.

On Friday, Lovlina Borgohain (69kg) became the first Indian boxer to secure a medal at the ongoing Games after advancing to the semifinals. She defeated former world champion Nien-Chin Chen of Chinese Taipei in her quarterfinal bout.

Tokyo Olympics: Indian boxer Amit Panghal bows out in the pre-quarterfinals

Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina was filled with a mixed sense of awe and trepidation as she watched the gravity-defying - and at times treacherous - routines of Simone Biles as the American set out to break her Olympic gold-medal record.

The 86-year-old, the most decorated Olympic gymnast in history with 18 medals, could not have fathomed the complexity of modern gymnasts' routines, acknowledging that gymnastics had become even more physically and psychologically gruelling than in her day.

"What we did is not comparable to what modern gymnasts do," she told Reuters at her home two hours outside Moscow on Friday.

"Looking at what gymnasts today do, I'm a little afraid. Would I have started gymnastics or not?"

Like much of the world, Latynina was stunned to see Biles, a four-time Olympic champion, withdraw from events that could have seen her challenge her record of nine Olympic gold medals for a gymnast and perhaps break her record of 32 combined Olympic and world championship medals.

The 24-year-old American completed one vault at the start of the women's team final before abruptly withdrawing, citing mental health concerns. She also withdrew from the all-around, the vault and uneven bar finals.

"In our day that would have been unacceptable," Latynina said. "I can't imagine how that's possible."

Biles' move, inconceivable in the Soviet era or even a few years ago, has brought mental health into focus at Tokyo 2020, where the U.S. gymnast has generally received an outpouring of support.

Latynina did not remember the Soviet gymnastics team turning to psychologists or other formal tools to improve concentration and mental performance.

She relied on encouragement and accolades from coaches and team mates. To soothe her nerves, she would stand on her tiptoes, close her eyes and remain still.

"My coach would always say it doesn't matter in which position you finish," Latynina said. "The most important thing is doing what you can."

Latynina said Soviet Olympic gymnasts competing at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics lived in military barracks with communal bathrooms, striking a sharp contrast with the hotel rooms used by the U.S. gymnastics team.

In Latynina's era there was pressure, of course, to win medals for the Soviet Union, which used elite sport as a tool to boost its international prestige.

But Latynina said Soviet authorities' desire for the country's athletes to top medal tables was not perceived as coercion.

"We were trying ourselves not to let our country, our people down," she said. "We would cry when our flag was raised and national anthem played."

The 24-year-old American completed one vault at the start of the women's team final before abruptly withdrawing, citing mental health concerns. She also withdrew from the all-around, the vault and uneven bar finals. "In our day that would have been unacceptable," Latynina said. "I can't imagine how that's possible." Latynina did not remember the Soviet gymnastics team turning to psychologists or other formal tools to improve concentration and mental performance. She relied on encouragement and accolades from coaches and team mates. To soothe her nerves, she would stand on her tiptoes, close her eyes and remain still. "My coach would always say it doesn't matter in which position you finish," Latynina said. "The most important thing is doing what you can." Latynina said Soviet Olympic gymnasts competing at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics lived in military barracks with communal bathrooms, striking a sharp contrast with the hotel rooms used by the U.S. gymnastics team.

Das failed to find a 10 in the fifth set and slipped to the red circle for an 8 that proved costly as Furukawa sealed the issue by a one-point margin in the decider.

Das was the lone archer in the fray after his world number one wife Deepika Kumari succumbed to a 0-6 rout by eventual gold medallist An San of Korea on Friday.

Two days after knocking out London Olympics gold medalist Oh Jin Hyek in the last-32 match, Das could not overcome the Japanese, a silver medallist in the 2012 Olympics, and a team bronze medallist here.

Das bounced back from a 1-3 deficit to level 3-3 as the duo went neck-and-neck in the fourth set before the local favourite sealed the issue in the fifth set by just one point (28-27).

Das shot twice in the red circle (8-8) in his last two arrows of the opening set to lose by two points (25-27). Starting off with a 10, Das gained control but the Japanese too matched him, shooting an identical 28-28 to split the second set with the Indian trailing 1-3.

Das showed fine composure, drilling two 10s en route to taking the fourth set 28-27 but there was more drama in store as both tied the fourth set.

World number one Novak Djokovic said he was "not sure" about his fitness for the US Open after pulling out of the Tokyo Olympics mixed doubles bronze medal match with a shoulder injury on Saturday.

The 34-year-old Serb could become the first man to complete a calendar Grand Slam since Rod Laver in 1969 when the US Open gets under way on August 30.

The withdrawal in Tokyo came after the 20-time major champion lost his cool on his way to a surprise 6-4, 6-7 (6/8), 6-3 defeat against Pablo Carreno Busta in the Olympics singles bronze-medal match.

He admitted that his exertions in Japan have taken their toll but he still hopes to be fit enough to challenge at Flushing Meadows.

"The consequences physically hopefully will not create a problem for me for the US Open, but that's something that I'm not sure about right now," said Djokovic.

"But I'm not regretting for giving it all because at the end of the day, when you play for your country, that's necessary."

The International Tennis Federation said Djokovic had withdrawn with a "left shoulder injury".

"Ashleigh Barty and John Peers receive a walkover against Djokovic and Nina Stojanovic and win the bronze medal for Australia," the ITF added.

Djokovic had been eyeing two gold medals when he played the singles and mixed doubles semi-finals on Friday -- but less than 24 hours after his hopes for gold were ended -- he was preparing to leave the Ariake Tennis Park without a medal of any colour.

He lost a gruelling match to Carreno Busta which lasted two hours and 47 minutes in suffocating heat, despite saving five match points.

The Serbian sporting icon's best result at the Olympics remains his bronze medal in Beijing in 2008.

"I just didn't deliver yesterday and today," said Djokovic, whose singles loss to Alexander Zverev ended his Golden Grand Slam bid.

"The level of tennis dropped, also due to exhaustion, mentally and physically."

His next opportunity to win an Olympic title will come in Paris in three years' time, when he will be 37.

"I know that I will bounce back. I will try to keep going for Paris Olympic Games and fight for my country to win medals," insisted Djokovic.

"I'm sorry that I disappointed a lot of sports fans in my country. But that's sport, I gave it all, whatever I had left in the tank, which was not so much. I left it out on the court."

'Sorry' for racquet smash

On Saturday, Djokovic brought back memories of his infamous default against Carreno Busta last year at the US Open, when he inadvertently struck a ball at a line judge.
This time he threw his racquet high into the empty stands as he saw a break point come and go in the opening game of the third set, and continued to cut an angry figure, destroying another racquet by smashing it against the net post.

He was given a warning by the umpire after that second incident, but not following the first.

"It was an emotional outburst and it happens," said Djokovic. "You're tense on the court, in the heat of the battle.

"It's not the first time and it's not the last time probably. It's not nice, of course, but it's part of, I guess, who I am.

"I don't like doing these things, I'm sorry for sending this kind of message, but we're all human beings and sometimes it's hard to control."

Kenya's Mark Otieno, a 100 metres sprinter, has tested positive for a banned substance, Team Kenya said in a statement, and will not take part in the Olympic qualifying heats on Saturday.

"We have received communication this afternoon from International Testing Agency (ITA) regarding one of our sprinters who has had an Adverse analytical finding on a urine sample he provided on 28 July 2021," said Waithaka Kioni, Team Kenya's Head of Delegation.

"He remains provisionally suspended from participating in his event today. The sprinter is fully aware of this communication and is in receipt of the letter from ITA."

Asked if he could confirm that the sprinter in question was Mark Otieno, a Team Kenya spokesman replied; "Yes".

"He has, however, denied any knowledge of the violation and has subsequently requested a re-analysis of his B urine sample," Kioni said.

Otieno, who has a personal best of 10.05 seconds, finished second at the national trials last month.

As accusations of Russian doping surfaced at the Tokyo Olympics pool the head of the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) dove in on Saturday coming to the defence of American swimmer Ryan Murphy for suggesting some of his rivals were drug cheats.

After losing the second of his 2016 Rio Olympic backstroke titles to Russian Evgeny Rylov on Friday an unhappy Murphy hinted doping had played a part in his demise.

Murphy later walked back his comments saying they were not directed specifically at his Russian rivals but at the sport which he said still has a big doping problem.

The Russian Olympic Committee hit back on Twitter labelling U.S. complaints as nothing more than sour grapes, prompting a fiery response from USADA chief Travis Tygart.

"The Russian state and sport officials put the dark cloud over themselves and in the process, tragically, pushed their athletes out in the storm," fumed Tygart in an email to Reuters.

"Now these officials want to continue to lie, deny and attack those with the courage to stand up to their deceit and blatant disregard for the rules and the truth.

"That’s fine because we all know if you cheat, you have no problem lying about your cheating."

Along with Russia, Tygart also took aim at two other familiar targets - the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) - for what USADA has viewed as a limp response to Russian doping scandals.

Russia is competing in Tokyo as representatives of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) because the country was stripped of its flag and anthem for doping offences, a punishment that Tygart has decried as a joke.

"Unfortunately, we’ve seen this horror film already – where the Russian state-sponsored doping programme walks free and Russia wins while the IOC and WADA leaders attempt to pull the wool over the world’s eyes by claiming Russia is ‘banned.’," said Tygart.

"All can now see this ‘ban’ once again for the farce that it is.

"It is barely a ‘rebrand’ and will do nothing to stop the corruption in Russia and likely will embolden others willing to win by any means.

"It’s a doomed system that allows, as it has here, one nation to make a mockery of the Games by their thirst for medals over values."

Tygart challenged the ROC that if they want the world to stop questioning them about doping then make test results public.

"They should put their money where their rhetoric is by making individual tests by athlete name public and allow a transparent international accounting of the reality of whether things have changed within Russia, as the evidence of the last years is that nothing has unfortunately," Tygart said.

Ivan Litvinovich won gold in the men's trampoline at the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday, taking top spot on the podium for the second straight Games for Belarus and denying China a golden sweep.

Litvinovich grabbed gold with 61.715 points, and said he would dedicate his medal to his grandmother, who did not live to see him win it.

Dong Dong of China surged from fifth after qualifications to claim silver with 61.235 for a record fourth trampoline medal.

New Zealander Dylan Schmidt took bronze, claiming his nation's first trampoline medal ever with 60.675 points.

"I’m surprised by the gold medal," Litvinovich, who turned 20 last month and still has braces on his teeth, told reporters.

Litvinovich defeated compatriot and former Olympic champion Uladzislau Hancharou, who finished fourth.

"I had been aiming for a second or third place. I don’t have any strong emotions right now. I think those came up when I saw the score," he said, adding that he had expected Hancharou to be in the top three.

He said he was so tired and just wanted to go back to his room and lie down.

Long a trampoline powerhouse, China had been gunning to reclaim Olympic gold after losing to Belarus in Rio in 2016, but four-time world champion Gao Lei failed to even make it to the finals after a crash onto the mat and finished third from the bottom.

Dong, who took gold in London in 2012, was fifth after qualifications but managed to power higher after a stunning routine, overtaking Hancharou, who had come into the finals in second place but fell to fourth.

"This medal means a lot to me," Dong said.

"I have competed in four Olympics and this medal is a dream come true. I didn't get the gold, but this result is very satisfying to me."

Schmidt said he could hardly believe the results.

"I put so much into this performance, it is honestly pretty surreal but a really good feeling to win this medal for myself and for my country, I'm super proud to make history," said Schmidt. "Can't believe it really.

I didn't get the gold, but this result is very satisfying to me." Schmidt said he could hardly believe the results. "I put so much into this performance, it is honestly pretty surreal but a really good feeling to win this medal for myself and for my country, I'm super proud to make history," said Schmidt. "Can't believe it really. "I was sitting in second with two to go it was second, third or fourth so when I popped up above Vlad (Hancharou) I was over the moon." Tokyo Olympics organisers on Saturday (July 31) said they were trying to improve conditions for athletes quarantined at the Games, following mounting complaints over a lack of air, food and basic necessities while in isolation.

Athletes and staff who test positive or are contact-traced are isolated in separate accommodation from their teams in an effort to contain the spread of the virus as the Japanese capital struggles with a rise in infections.

Athletes have criticised the conditions there, with some, such as Dutch skateboarder Candy Jacobs, who was quarantined early in the Games, calling them "inhumane".

Germany's independent elite athletes grouping Athleten Deutschland have urged the IOC to act.

"It... appears grotesque that athletes who test positive have to spend their quarantine in prison-like conditions, while IOC members stay in expensive luxury hotels and are provided with high daily allowances," said Maximilian Klein, Athleten Deutschland's representative for international sport policy.

Among the biggest issues are lack of fresh air and training facilities, the quality of food, small living quarters and an absence of basic amenities such as laundry.

"It's unfortunately for all of us but particularly also the athletes the extra measures that have to be taken in terms of isolation and we fully sympathise with everyone who's had to go through this," said IOC spokesman Mark Adams.

"There are certain regulations that the Japanese health authorities imposed - we can't do much about that - but there are things that can be done."

Tokyo Games spokesperson Masa Takaya said organisers had managed to provide more space for them outside their rooms while teammates could bring food.

"The situation has been improved and we are trying to implement a more flexible approach to accommodate these positive cases," Takaya said. "We would like to extend our sincere sympathies to them. It must be a heart-wrenching feeling (to test positive at the Olympics)."

Athleten Deutschland said conditions were currently not good.

"In the current quarantine hotel, for example, there is an insufficient provision of fresh air. The food supply is neither rich nor balanced and does not meet the specific nutritional requirements of high-performance athletes," it said in a statement.

"It is unclear to them what the exact procedure of quarantine is and what steps have to be taken after it is over."

So far dozens of athletes and team staff have been quarantined at the Games, with 21 new Games-related COVID-19 cases record on Saturday for a total of 241 infections since July 1. Not all of these are athletes.
