Tokyo Olympics: India lose 1-2 to Argentina in women's hockey semi-final, will play for bronze next

The Tokyo Olympics has added skateboarding, surfing, and sport climbing to attract a younger demographic, but even a medal rush hasn't been enough to win over some Japanese youngsters.

Skateboarding resumed Wednesday after Yuto Horigome, 22, won the sport's first-ever gold for Japan, and 13-year-old Momiji Nishiya became the nation's youngest Olympic champion with victory in the women's event.

And Japan once again struck gold, with Sakura Yosozumi taking the women's park top spot next to teammate Kokona Hiraki, 12, with silver.

But for Emiya Ajisaka and his classmates, watching Olympic sport on TV is not a priority.

"No one is really talking about the Olympics around me," the 13-year-old told AFP as he played football with friends at a park near some Tokyo 2020 venues.

"I'm more likely to be watching YouTube, hanging around with my friends, and playing video games," he said, adding that he only plans to watch Olympic soccer matches on TV.

"The World Cup was much more fun, wasn't it?" he said to his friends, who nodded in agreement.

Long before Japan began to rack up medals including a surfing silver and bronze, opinion polls showed younger generations were less interested in the Olympics.

Around 63 percent of respondents in their 20s said they were "somewhat or very" interested in the Games, compared with around 85 percent of those in their 60s, according to a 2019 survey by the research unit of public broadcaster NHK.

"I don't dislike the Olympics, but for me, the Olympics isn't that high in my priorities, and I don't feel so compelled to watch it live," Ryo Kawasaki, a 24-year-old web engineer, said at a bouldering gym in Tokyo.

"If I have days off, I look for places for a trip and a hot spring or go out to watch movies. And then If I have extra time, I might take a look at the Olympics."

Munehiko Harada, president of Osaka University of Health and Sport Science, thinks the coronavirus pandemic is "one factor behind the low interest among young people."

It forced the historic one-year postponement of the event and means that most competitions are being held without spectators -- wiping out young people's chances of watching their favorite sport live.

Not paying attention

Kosei Fujiwara, a 13-year-old junior high school student, said the decision to go ahead with the Olympics despite the pandemic had turned him against the Games.

"It's wrong to invite a lot of people from around the world to Tokyo where infections are spiking," Fujiwara said as he played basketball with his friends.

"If there were no pandemic, I would have supported the Olympics."

Interest in sports among younger generations remains relatively high, especially with a renewed interest in keeping active during Covid-19 lockdowns, Harada said.

"But in terms of the Olympics, their interest is clearly low... partially due to the variety of entertainment options available to young generations," said the professor in sports marketing.

Hiroto Inoue, a 21-year-old university student, said the Olympics doesn't engage him on issues that are important to him, like the environment.

"I'm not paying much attention to watching the Olympics," he told AFP. "I'm focusing on a business forum about the environment that I'm hosting in late August."

Yoshifusa Ichii, a professor of sport and society at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, said older generations in Japan have an emotional attachment to the Olympics after Tokyo hosted it in 1964.

"It was a symbolic event which reminded people of how Japan was recovering and developing in the post-war era," Ichii said.

Many young Japanese do not have a similar bond with the Olympics, he added.

But there are some teenagers who have been drawn into the Games and its new sports in particular.

Haru Fujirai, 11, said he was inspired by Japan's skateboarding champion Nishiya.

"I saw a girl who's only two years older than I am winning the gold medal at the Olympics," said Fujirai, who just started skateboarding last year.

"I want to practice more, and someday compete in the Olympics."

Tokyo Olympics struggles for youth appeal despite new sports

The drunken antics of Australian Olympians who vomited and disrupted passengers on their flight home from Tokyo had shamed the entire team, a top official said Wednesday.

As New Zealand athletes faced allegations of similar loutish behaviour on their returning flight, Australia's Olympic chef de mission labelled the conduct of his team members "completely unacceptable".

"I'm pretty upset about this because a few people are damaging the reputation of a very strong unit, a unit that is representing us over here very proudly," Ian Chesterman said.

Chesterman confirmed Japan Airlines wrote to the Australian Olympic Committee complaining about the behaviour of athletes on a flight that arrived in Sydney on Friday.

"JAL advised that team members had drunk excessively, failed to respond to requests of cabin crew and caused disruption to other passengers," he said.

"This behaviour is clearly unacceptable and does not meet the standards set by this team."

Chesterman said at least one athlete vomited in a toilet, rendering it unusable for the rest of the 10-hour flight, but could not confirm reports the Olympians raided the plane's alcohol cabinet after being refused further drinks.

He said there were 49 athletes from nine sports on the flight but the troublemakers all came from the men's rugby and football teams.

Chesterman said the sports' governing bodies would determine what punishments were imposed.

"They're taking it very seriously, which is important to us," he said, adding that athletes faced "unquestionable tension and stress" with tight coronavirus restrictions during the Games.

New Zealand's Olympians have also been accused of unruly behaviour on a flight from Tokyo to Christchurch, including drunkenness and breaching Covid-19 restrictions by throwing used facemasks at cabin crew.

New Zealand based website reported the athletes became so rowdy that one of the pilots came out from the cockpit and told them to settle down.

The New Zealand Olympic Committee defended its athletes.

"We can understand that following year of training and a very successful, and extended, Olympic campaign, some athletes wanted to celebrate with their teammates before entering two weeks of MIQ (quarantine)," NZOC spokeswoman Ashley Abbott said.

"We have not received any complaints from the airline."

Abbott did not respond when asked if the alleged coronavirus rule breaches were being investigated.

Tokyo Olympics: Australian Olympic officials criticise athletes after 'unacceptable' plane party

Belarusian sprinter Krystsina Tsimanouskaya left Tokyo for Austria on Wednesday, adding another dramatic twist to a diplomatic saga in which she had sought refuge at the Polish embassy.

Tsimanouskaya had been scheduled to board a flight for Warsaw, where the government has offered her a humanitarian visa after she had refused to board Games a flight home against her wishes on Sunday and sought diplomatic protection.

Instead, she departed on an Austrian Airlines flight scheduled to land in Vienna at 4:05 p.m. (1405 GMT) A member of the Belarusian community in touch with Tsimanouskaya said diplomats had changed her flight due to security concerns.

Masked and wearing blue jeans, a blue blouse and sunglasses with "I RUN CLEAN" written on them, Tsimanouskaya had arrived in a police-escorted van at Narita airport east of the Japanese capital. She did not speak to several dozen waiting reporters as she went to a VIP area, escorted by several officials rolling her suitcases, and later to her gate.

The International Olympic Committee said on Tuesday it had launched a formal investigation into the case and was expecting a report from the Belarusian team.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has accused Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko`s regime of intolerable "transnational repression" in the matter.

Tsimanouskaya, 24, had been due to compete in the women`s 200-metre heats on Monday but said the Belarusian head coach had turned up at her room on Sunday at the athletes` village and told her she had to leave after she had criticised team officials.

"I will not return to Belarus," she told Reuters at the time.

The incident has focussed attention on Belarus, where police have cracked down on dissent following a wave of protests triggered by an election last year which the opposition says was rigged to keep Lukashenko in power.

Belarusian authorities have characterised anti-government protesters as criminals or violent revolutionaries backed by the West, and described the actions of their own law enforcement agencies as appropriate and necessary.

Vitaly Shishov, a Belarusian activist living in exile in Ukraine, was found hanged in a park near his home in Kyiv early on Tuesday, and Ukrainian police launched a murder investigation. He led an organisation that helps Belarusians fleeing persecution.

Olympics: Belarus sprinter heads for Austria in fresh twist to Tokyo diplomatic drama

The IOC is still waiting for a formal explanation from the Chinese National Olympic Committee as to why two gold medallists wore badges featuring the head of the country`s former leader Mao Zedong on the podium at the Tokyo Olympics.

The Chinese have said they will provide a report "soon" and assured the International Olympic Committee there would be no repeat.

Another investigation into the actions of U.S. shot-putter Raven Saunders has been suspended after the death of the athlete`s mother, the IOC said.

Silver medallist Saunders had raised her arms in an X shape above her head on Sunday, which she later indicated was an expression of support for the oppressed.

The USOPC said the gesture did not breach its rules as it was a "peaceful expression in support of racial and social justice (that) was respectful of her competitors".

Cyclists Bao Shanju and Zhong Tianshi wore the badges featuring the head of China`s former leader during a medal ceremony on Monday, in a potential breach of Olympic rules on the display of political paraphernalia.

The duo wore the badges, commonplace in China for half a century but a potential breach of Rule 50 of the Olympic charter, after retaining the women`s cycling team sprint title at the Izu Velodrome.

While the IOC last month relaxed Rule 50 to allow gestures, such as taking the knee on the field of play provided athletes do so without disruption and with respect for fellow competitors, it has banned any such gestures on the podium.

The IOC said on Tuesday (August 3) it was waiting for a report later in the day from the Belarusian National Olympic Committee on the case of sprinter Krystsina Tsimanouskaya, after launching an investigation into the incident that has rocked the Games.

The athlete took refuge in the Polish embassy in Tokyo on Monday, a day after refusing her team's orders to board a flight home from the Olympic Games. Warsaw has offered her a humanitarian visa.

International Olympic Committee spokesperson Mark Adams told reporters the body had spoken to the athlete twice on Monday, that she was in a safe, secure place, and that the IOC needed to know all the facts before taking further action.

ALSO READ: Tokyo Olympics: History-maker Laurel Hubbard says not a transgender role model, but an athlete Asked whether an IOC decision on the matter would come during the Games, Adams said it was not possible to estimate how long the investigation would take. Tsimanouskaya, 24, had been due to compete in the women's 200-meter heats on Monday but said that on Sunday she was taken out of her room in the athletes' village and driven to the airport to board a flight home after criticizing team officials. The incident has focussed attention on Belarus, where police have cracked down on dissent following a wave of protests triggered by an election last year which the opposition says was rigged to keep Lukashenko in power. In March, the IOC refused to recognize the election of Lukashenko's son Viktor as head of the country's Olympic Committee. Both father and son were banned from attending the Games in December. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken blasted Belarus' attempt to send Tsimanouskaya home. "Such actions violate the Olympic spirit, are an affront to basic rights, and cannot be tolerated," Blinken wrote on Twitter late on Monday.

Tokyo Olympics: Young wrestler Sonam Malik loses opening bout on Olympic debut

The first openly transgender Olympian said on Tuesday she would likely retire from weightlifting and felt her landmark appearance at the Tokyo Games should not be historic and would be forgotten fast as the sport becomes more open and inclusive.

New Zealand's Laurel Hubbard, 43, said she had never sought publicity and exposure, nor regards herself as a role model or trailblazer and just wanted to be seen as any other athlete on sport's biggest stage.

"I don't think it should be historic," Hubbard said of her participation in Tokyo, which has been one of the most contentious issues in the lead-up to the Olympics.

"As we move into a new and more understanding world, people are starting to realize that people like me are just people. We are human and as such I hope that just by being here is enough."

"All I have ever wanted as an athlete is to be regarded as an athlete," Hubbard added.

The soft-spoken, media-shy Hubbard made an unexpected early exit on Monday, eliminated just 10 minutes into her +87 kg contest after failures in her opening three lifts.

She was born male and transitioned eight years ago, and was allowed to compete in women's events by a 2015 International Olympic Committee consensus.

But her participation in the Games has stoked a huge debate on whether being more inclusive towards transgender athletes competing in women's events means disadvantaging athletes who were born as women.

Hubbard, who was twice the age of the other competitors in her weight class, said it was time to consider retiring because age had caught up with her and the physical challenge of training and competing had become too demanding.

"What I hope is, if I am in a position to look back that this will just be a small part of history just a small step," Hubbard said in an interview with international media, her first since being selected for the New Zealand team.

"I really hope that with time, any significance to this occasion is diminished by things to come."

Asked if she was a role model for trans people Hubbard responded "no, not really".

"The transgender community has more different than it has in common because everyone is so individual, living such different lives in such different circumstances," she said.

"I'm not sure that a role model is, is something that I could aspire to be.

"Instead I hope that just by being here, I can provide some sense of encouragement.

"And I just hope that different people who are undergoing any difficulty or struggle with their lives... that they can perhaps see that there are opportunities in the world. There are opportunities to live authentically, and as we are."

Tokyo Olympics: 'Wins and losses are part of life,' says PM Modi after India lose men's hockey semifinal

A world record had been predicted but Norway's Karsten Warholm had to utterly destroy it to hold off American Rai Benjamin and take gold on Tuesday in the men's 400 metres hurdles, in what will go down as one of the all-time great Olympic races.

Last month, Warholm broke Kevin Young's 29-year world mark with a time of 46.70 seconds but he blew his own record away with an astonishing 45.94 run. Benjamin pushed him all the way to take silver in 46.17, also half a second inside the old record.

Brazilian Alison dos Santos, 21, took bronze in 46.72, also inside Young's previous best, as six of the first seven finishers set national or continental records.

"You know the cliché that it hasn't sunk in yet? I don't think it has, but I feel ecstatic," Warholm said.

"I can't believe the time, it's so fast. A lot of the time I am asked about the perfect race. I said it didn't exist but this is the closest I've ever come.

"I told myself going in to the race, remember all the work you have put in. It was the only thing missing from my (medal) collection. I can't describe how important this is for me. This is what I do morning until night, it's huge."

The new carbon-technology shoes may be contributing to the rash of blazing times being seen in Tokyo but even if they had been running barefoot, the two great rivals would have put on a show to remember.

Double world champion Warholm runs every race as if he is trying to break the world record and on home soil in Oslo last month he finally got Young's 1992 Barcelona Olympics mark off the books - and seemingly a weight off his shoulders.

With Benjamin posting 46.83 in the U.S. trials, the record was widely expected to be broken in Tokyo, but nobody could have predicted the massive bites both men took.

In perfect conditions, the two 25-year-olds hurdled beautifully and were side-by-side coming into the final straight, only for Warholm to forge clear.

When he saw the astonishing time, Warholm looked to be in shock. He ripped his vest apart and beat his chest in celebration before sinking to his knees.

Benjamin would have been equally amazed with his time, all the more so for it being only good enough for second place.

"Both of them smashed the old world record. No wonder he rips his shirt apart - he is Superman in this event," said BBC commentator and former world 1,500m champion Steve Cram.

"I cannot believe what we've just seen. Two men running times you could only dream of. Dos Santos was nearly within the old world record and he was miles back."

Former 110m hurdles world record holder Colin Jackson added: "When you talk about world records, this is up there with Usain Bolt's time of 9.58 seconds in the 100m, up there with Flo Jo's 10.49 seconds in the 100m.

"This is one of the most outstanding world records and I'm pretty sure that world record will outlive me."

Tokyo Olympics: India lose 2-5 to Belgium in men's hockey semi-final, will compete for bronze next

A Belarusian athlete who took refuge in the Polish embassy in Tokyo after refusing her team's orders to fly home from the Olympic Games will travel to Poland on Wednesday, a group of her supporters said.

Sprinter Krystsina Tsimanouskaya was granted a humanitarian visa by the Warsaw government. She had earlier refused to get on a flight home, saying she had been taken to the airport against her will by Belarusian officials because she had criticised her team's coaching staff.

"She will fly from Tokyo, a direct flight to Warsaw on August 4, in two days' time," said Aleksandr Opeykin, chairman of the Belarusian Sports Solidarity Foundation.

"She has accepted the offer issued by the Polish Foreign Ministry to request international help, she has done that and she has received a Polish visa today. We, at the Foundation, helped her to get the ticket to Warsaw," Opeykin told Reuters.

A source at the foundation, which supports athletes jailed or sidelined for their political views, said Tsimanouskaya planned to request asylum in Germany or Austria on Monday.

"She is a young sportswoman, a successful one and obviously she would want to continue her career so she will need help to train and develop," Opeykin said.

The athlete arrived at the Polish embassy in Tokyo on Monday.

Polish deputy foreign minister Pawel Jablonski said: "I can confirm that we have issued a humanitarian visa. I can confirm that we will provide all necessary support in Poland if she wishes to use it."

Tsimanouskaya, 24, had been due to compete in the women's 200 metre heats on Monday but said that on Sunday she was taken to the airport to board a Turkish Airlines flight.

She refused, telling Reuters: "I will not return to Belarus."

The European Union welcomed Poland's decision to grant a visa and said the repatriation attempt was further evidence of "brutal repression" by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Twitter the Lukashenko government's "actions violate the Olympic spirit, are an affront to basic rights, and cannot be tolerated."

The incident has focussed attention on Belarus, where police have cracked down on dissent following a wave of protests triggered by an election last year which the opposition says was rigged to keep Lukashenko in power.

The athlete arrived at the Polish embassy in an unmarked silver van about 5 p.m. local time (0800 GMT). She stepped out with her official team luggage, and greeted two officials before going inside.

Two women, one carrying the red and white flag seen as the symbol of opposition in Belarus, came to the gates to support her.

Her husband, Arseni Zhdanevich, will join her in Poland, a Warsaw-based Belarusian opposition politician said.

The politician, Pavel Latushko, said Belarus officials had told Tsimanouskaya's mother that her daughter was a spy for Western governments.

He told Reuters Tsimanouskaya had told him via text message that someone from Lukashenko's office had approached her mother and asked her to persuade the athlete to come home.

Tsimanouskaya told a Reuters reporter via Telegram that the Belarusian head coach had turned up at her room on Sunday at the athletes' village and told her she had to leave.

"The head coach came over to me and said there had been an order from above to remove me," she wrote in the message. "At 5 (pm) they came my room and told me to pack and they took me to the airport."

But she refused to board and sought the protection of Japanese police.

Tsimanouskaya said she had been removed from the team as she had spoken out about what she described as the negligence of their coaches.

She had complained on Instagram that she was entered in the 4x400 m relay after some team members were found to be ineligible to compete at the Olympics because they had not undergone sufficient doping tests.

"And the coach added me to the relay without my knowledge," Tsimanouskaya said.

The Belarusian Olympic Committee said coaches had decided to withdraw Tsimanouskaya from the Games on doctors' advice about her "emotional, psychological state".

Belarus athletics head coach Yuri Moisevich told state television he "could see there was something wrong with her ... She either secluded herself or didn't want to talk".

Simone Biles' nightmare Olympics concluded with the US gymnastics superstar returning in the beam final on Tuesday, declaring "I did it for me" after taking bronze behind Chinese teenager Guan Chenchen. It was Biles' first taste of competition in Tokyo since dramatically standing down during the women's team final last week, struggling with the "twisties", a condition meaning gymnasts lose the ability to orientate themselves in mid-air. "I was just happy to be able to perform regardless of the outcome. "I wasn't expecting to walk away with the medal, I was just doing this for me," said Biles, who revealed her aunt died two days ago. I did this for me and me only. I just went out there and had fun." ALSO READ: Tokyo Olympics: When and where to watch India vs Argentina women's hockey semifinal match After also withdrawing from the first three apparatus finals in the uneven bars, vault and floor, she said she had only been cleared to compete in the beam on Monday night. "We almost missed the deadline!" she disclosed, adding: "Just to have one more opportunity to compete at the Olympic Games meant the world. "Training for five years and then coming here, and then kind of being triggered and not being able to do anything, it wasn't fun." With bib 392 on her back, she filed in with the other eight finalists, blowing a kiss to the cameras. Another cheer rang out when the stadium announcer said: "And now, representing the United States...Simone Biles." - 'Nervous' - She looked pensive on her comeback as she waited for her turn to climb up onto the 10cm wide beam for one of the most intensely scrutinised 90-second routines of her or anyone else's life. Among the audience for the 19-time world champion's heart-warming return to the field of battle at the Ariake Gymnastics Centre was Olympic chief Thomas Bach and two canine cardboard cutouts of her beloved French bulldogs -- Lilo and Rambo. ALSO READ | EXCLUSIVE: Winning for my country was important, says Indian badminton star PV Sindhu on her Olympics bronze Peeling off her Team USA red tracksuit, she practised her dance moves in her star-spangled banner leotard as she waited for her turn as the third to perform. At 6:11 pm local time (0911 GMT), it was her time. One long week on from her first shock withdrawal, the 24-year-old from Ohio was finally back at her day job. Wiping her brow, she approached the beam, chalked up, and finally got the wheels back on her derailed Olympic campaign. While avoiding any twists incorporated in her favoured and most difficult moves, she put in a solid performance, ending with a double backward somersault, double pike dismount. Her face breaking into a broad grin, she waved and hugged rivals and team officials, the relief of having performed clear on her face. Her routine earned the triple world champion on the apparatus 14.000 points. "I was a little bit nervous for the dismount just because we had to switch it and I probably haven't done a double pike dismount since I was 12 years old, so it was kind of hard to control that," said Biles. "But to go out there and compete one more time and have everybody's support meant the world." She was lying second behind Tang Xijing until 16-year-old Guan, the last of the eight finalists to go, put in a superb display to take gold with 14.633 points, relegating Biles to bronze, the same colour she won in Rio. Bach was one of the first to congratulate her on her comeback, as were 'Lilo' and 'Rambo' in their mute manner from the stands, after her Tokyo nightmare ended in smiles on the third rung of the beam podium. It was Biles' seventh Olympic medal, equalling Shannon Miller's record for an American gymnast. She had arrived as one of the faces of the pandemic-delayed Games, seeking five gold medals to equal the Olympic all-time gymnastics record of nine. But despite her hiatus she said she was proud of the decisions she had taken. "My mental and physical health is above all medals that I could ever win." Biles' presence inevitably overshadowed the other two finals on the closing night of artistic gymnastics with Japan's new men's star Daiki Hashimoto adding horizontal bar gold to his all-around title and team silver, and China's Zou Jingyuan winning parallel bars gold.

She further added, "I'm on cloud nine. I'm going to enjoy this moment. My family have worked hard for me and put in a lot of effort so I'm very thankful. And my sponsors have given me their best so I'd like to thank them and enjoy the moment."
