By the time Surya departed, India needed just 39 runs in about seven overs. Pandya (20 off 15 not out) and Varma then took India home without further damage.

India and West Indies will now face off each other in Lauderhill, Florida (USA) for the last two T20Is of the series.

India's latest batting sensation Tilak Varma has made heads turn with two crucial knocks in his first two T20I matches during the ongoing series against West Indies. The Southpaw top-scored in both games for India as other batsmen failed. Varma scored 39 off 22 in the 1st T20I before hitting his maiden fifty (51 off 41) in the second one. India, however, lost both games and are currently trailing 0-2 in the five-match series.

India's veteran spinner Ravi Ashwin thinks that Varma could be a backup for Men in Blue at the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup. Ashwin, speaking on his YouTube channel, also compared Varma's batting, especially the pull shot, to Aussies.

“The emergence of Tilak Varma has made everyone take notice of him. He looked in imperious touch even on that slow pitch in 1st T20I. His batting style is very unlike for an Indian making his international debut. His game resembles a lot like Rohit Sharma. He sweats on the pull shot. Generally, India batters won’t set up to play the pull shot. It is something they develop later. But his game looks like he has a natural pull shot and sends the ball outside the rope like an Aussie batter,” Ashwin said.

And look at the off-spinners from all the top teams. Australia have Ashton Agar. England have Moeen Ali and a leggie in Adil Rashid. So most teams don’t have a finger spinner to challenge the left-handed batters. That is why the emergence of Tilak is crucial,” he added.

With less than 60 days to go for the World Cup and a cloud of uncertainty over players, namely Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant, Varma surely has emerged as a contender for the backup spot. West Indies clinched a close two-wicket win over India in the 2nd T20I in Guyana on Sunday. Keeper-batter Nicholas Pooran starred with the bat, hitting a 40-ball 61 as the hosts continued their domination in their favourite format. For the Indian Team, newcomer Tilak Varma completed his maiden fifty, while Captain Hardik Pandya picked three wickets.

Deciding to bat first after winning the toss, India lost Shubman Gill early on seven, while the best T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav soon followed him on one. Both left-handers, Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma, revived the innings and added 42 runs for the third wicket before Romario Shepherd bowled Kishan on 27 off 23 balls.&nbsp;

For the second time in this T20I series, Sanju Samson failed to leave an impact as he got stumped on just seven off Akeal Hosein. Captain Pandya joined attacking batter Varma on the crease, and the pair added 38 runs for the fifth wicket.

Soon after completing his maiden T20I fifty, including five fours and a six, Varma departed on 51. Axar Patel’s handy cameo of 14 off 12 did help the score but failed to accelerate India’s innings as they got reduced to 152 for seven in 20 overs.

And while as they say, cometh the hour, cometh the man, in-form Pooran came to his team’s rescue. Alongside Captain Rovman Powell, both unleashed their A-Game and put India on the backfoot immediately. Even after Pandya removed Powell on 21, West Indies were still in the game, thanks to Pooran, who completed his fifty.

Mukesh Kumar provided India with a big breakthrough when he removed Pooran, and soon after that, wickets fell in a cluster. With eight wickets down at one stage, the momentum shifted towards India.

However, there was a twist in the tale, as the bowling pair of Hosein and Alzarri Joseph held their nerves and helped the team chase down the target with two wickets in hand.&nbsp;

With this win, West Indies took a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.

Speaking on the nature of the surface, Tilak noted it was on the slower side and thus thought any total from 150-160 was enough.

But as it turned out, Nicholas Pooran’s masterclass helped West Indies stay ahead in the chase as they won the contest by two wickets.&nbsp;

"The wicket was on the slower side and slightly double-paced, and that's why we thought that 150 or 160 would be a good score,” Tilak told media after the second T20I.

He added India played well, but the execution of slower balls from West Indies bowlers was the turning point of the game.

“I think we were ten runs short; other than that, I thought we played well," Tilak added. "They were bowling really good. When they bowled, they were using slower ones and hard lengths really well, and they used the wind conditions really well."

<h2>‘I am here because of two IPL seasons</h2>

For someone who averages close to 57 in List-A cricket, Tilak has achieved decent numbers in IPL. While he had a strike rate of 131.02 for his 397 runs in IPL 2022, the left-handed averaged 42.88 with a strike rate of 164.11 in&nbsp;IPL 2023.&nbsp;

His ability to absorb pressure and deliver against even the top sides separates him from his contemporaries.&nbsp;

"Everyone knows that the two IPL seasons were my turning point. I am here because of my performances there," Tilak acknowledged. "So I am just playing with that confidence, and going forward, I want to continue what I've been doing."

He even added that Rohit (MI captain), during Tilak’s first season, called him an all-format player - something that boosted his confidence.

"In my first IPL season, he [Rohit Sharma] told me that I am an all-format player, and that was a huge boost for me. That gave me a lot of confidence. He told me from then that I have to be consistent, and for that, I need to be disciplined off the field. So I take his guidance and have been following the things he has told me to do," Tilak said.

Speaking on the sidelines of the ongoing Duleep Trophy semis against North Zone in Bengaluru, Tilak revealed the India call-up wasn't on his mind currently, and when he received the information of&nbsp;his selection (from his childhood friend), and informed his parents, they turned emotional and shed happy tears while being on a video call with him.

"I was not thinking about the national side," Varma said. "My mom and dad were crying on video call yesterday; they were very emotional. My childhood friend called me [saying] you have got selected. That was the time — around 8 o'clock [pm] — that I knew I was selected."

Thanks to the platform that IPL is, Tilak, quite early in his career, was able to rub shoulders with the legends, including Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit and Virat. Opening up on receiving advice from them, Tilak said,&nbsp;"I have heard a lot from Rohit bhai and Sachin sir, and also from Virat [Kohli] bhai. They always say that when you are in good form, your subconscious mind is in the right place," Varma said. Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag is among the many former players who have been impressed by Mumbai Indians batsman Tilak Varma. The southpaw had a great 2023 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), scoring 343 run in 11 matches at an average of 42.88 and a strike rate of 164.

Sehwag, however, wants Varma to focus on his fitness now that MI's season has come to end following their 62-run loss in the second qualifier against Gujarat Titans.

Speaking to cricket website Cricbuzz, Sehwag said, "He should focus on 2 things; improve his fitness, and identify the skills that he can work on, as well as the mindset. It often happens when you play regular cricket, you change yourself with time. But when you're not playing cricket, you have to focus on your fitness and your skills. Like Suryakumar Yadav, he practiced a lot for his shots."

Before I could bring my bat down, the ball hit my pad. So, Dada (Sourav Ganguly) told me one thing... go back, practice against fast bowling, so you come better prepared. I used to play middle-order, I got spin, and by the time fast bowlers came, I had already scored a century. Likewise, Tilak Varma needs to look on where are his weaknesses,” Sehwag said.

"We watched Tilak last season, and he showed what he can do with the bat, and he's not looked away from it this year as well," said Rohit Sharma at the post-match presentation after MI beat SRH on Tuesday. "What I like about his game is his approach. He's not playing the bowler, he's playing the ball, which is quite important," he added.

Rohit also went on to predict a bright future for the left-handed batsman and said that he'll be playing for different teams soon.

Notably, Varma has been the bright spot in Mumbai lackluster season which is getting on the track slowly with three wins in last three matches.

In 2022, Tilak scored 397 runs in 14 matches with two fifties and at an average of 36. His strike was also near 131 and he was not out three times batting down the order.

Seeing his talent, MI promoted him a little up the order this season and he instantly repaid the faith shown in him with an innings of 84 not out off 46 balls in MI's season opener against RCB. On a pitch where all the other Mumbai batters struggled, Tilak looked ever so elegant in his knock as he helped MI post a competitive total of 171.

RCB, however, won the match by eight wickets, but Tilak made an instant impact after which MI have stuck to him playing in the upper middle-order only.

Mumbai Indians star Tilak Varma adds another feather to his cap, joins hands with Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya

India are gearing up for the third and final T20I versus New Zealand, to be held at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad on Wednesday (February 01). Ahead of the series finale, with the scoreline being 1-1, former Indian spinner and captain Anil Kumble lavished praise on some young Indian players and mentioned two&nbsp;future superstars.

Tilak revealed he has seen his family deal with financial difficulties growing up and it was not easy for his father to pay for his cricket-related expenses from his meagre salary. However, now that the 19-year-old has earned an IPL contract, his only aim is to buy a house for his parents.

“Growing up, we’ve had a lot of financial difficulties. My father with his meagre salary had to look after my cricket expenses as well as my elder brother’s studies. In the last few years, with some sponsorship and match fees, I could just about take care of my cricketing expenses,” Tilak was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
