India's latest young sensation Tilak Varma made a dream debut for the country on the recently-concluded tour of West Indies. The southpaw was easily the best batsman among other young guns for India in the five T20Is. He has been rewarded for his performance by getting a place in India's Asia Cup squad.

Tilak, who is currently in Ireland with the team for the three-T20I series, spoke about his selection in the squad. The regional tournament is being played in 50-over format this year as a precursor to ICC ODI World Cup.&nbsp;

"I never dreamed that I would be debuting directly in the Asia Cup, and that too in the one-day side. I was always dreaming that I would be debuting for India in ODIs. But it is a big thing for me. And I always dreamed of this, like debuting for India in ODIs, that too, in like, a single year, I got my T20I debut and suddenly, in the next month, I'm just getting a call for the Asia Cup. So yeah, it is one of my dreams and I'm just preparing for it," said Tilak on BCCI.tv.

About performing in the ODIs, Varma said he's pretty confident given that he has played a lot in domestic List A cricket.

"I'm pretty confident about playing one day cricket because I have played ODI cricket for long as you said, like in the List A cricket. I have done well in List A cricket for my state and the teams also have done well, so I'm pretty confident that I can do well in ODIs, so I'm looking forward to it," said Varma.

Asia Cup, being hosted jointly by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, will start on August 30. India will start their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan on September 2 in Kandy, Sri Lanka.

Asia Cup: Tilak Varma reacts to his selection in India ODI squad

On Monday (August 21), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced India's 17-man squad for the Asia Cup. It&nbsp;comprises several star players and also sees the return of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer. However, Yuzvendra Chahal was a notable omission whereas Sanju Samson also failed to make it to the final squad but will travel as a reserve player. While Samson failed to make the cut, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma,&nbsp;uncapped in ODIs, are part of the squad. Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra reviewed the squad selection and feels Samson could have been included in the final 17.&nbsp;

<h2>'Sanju Samson and his&nbsp;fans&nbsp;might consider themselves slightly unlucky'</h2>

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra said, "The first big news is that Sanju Samson's name is not there. In whose place could his name have come? He would have come in place of either Tilak or Surya. He could have become a part of the 17 in place of either of them. Sanju Samson's fans and Sanju Samson himself might consider themselves slightly unlucky because his performances are good in ODIs as of now as well. He has an average of over 50 and he scored a fifty in the West Indies also. There is no doubt that he plays well. He has a little work experience as well."

On the other hand, Chopra opined on Suryakumar and said, "Suryakumar Yadav's story in ODI cricket has not been good. We all know that he is a very good player and we also want his ODI career to flourish but the truth is that he hasn't been able to understand the ODI template thus far. The problem is that you have very little time. " He added, "To be very honest, my initial thought was that if a wicketkeeper has to play in the middle order, Sanju Samson is definitely the second option after KL Rahul. However, if a place can be created as an opener, then Ishan Kishan, without a shadow of a doubt, is your second wicketkeeper."

Backing Chopra's claims, Samson has done reasonably well in the ODI format. The right-hander has 390 runs in 13 ODIs at an average of&nbsp;55.71 and a strike rate of&nbsp;104.00 along with three half-centuries. His T20I numbers aren't impressive but Samson has done well in ODIs. Meanwhile, Surya has struggled in the 50-over format, managing 511 runs in 26 ODIs at an average of 24.33. Varma, on the other hand, is yet to make his debut in the format. He got picked in the final 17 on the basis of a promising start to his international cricket career during India-West Indies T20Is, in West Indies and USA.

India open their campaign in the Asia Cup, which commences on August 30, versus arch-rivals Pakistan on September 02 in Pallekele, Sri Lanka. The tournament will be jointly hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The Men in Blue are placed in Group A along with Babar Azam-led Men in Green and Nepal.&nbsp;

Samson could've been picked ahead of Tilak Varma or Suryakumar: Chopra reviews India's Asia Cup squad

On Monday afternoon (August 21), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed India's 17-man squad for the forthcoming Asia Cup 2023 edition, to be jointly hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee picked a strong squad which sees the return of KL Rahul and&nbsp;Shreyas Iyer whereas pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna have also&nbsp;made an ODI comeback after a lengthy injury layoff. The duo marked their international return&nbsp;during the ongoing Ireland T20I series opener.

The squad comprises 17 players whereas Sanju Samson has been named as a backup. The main squad also includes Tilak Varma, who is yet to make his debut in the ODI format. Varma, after a stellar run in IPL 2023 for Mumbai Indians (MI), got his maiden international cap during the India-West Indies T20Is, in West Indies and Florida. The left-hander impressed with scores of 39, 51, 49*, 7*, 27.&nbsp;

Former India pacer Agarkar, who is spearheading the BCCI selection committee, opined on Varma's inclusion and said after the squad announcement, "In West Indies, we saw some real promise in terms of not just performances but the temperament."

He added, "And it gives us an opportunity to take him with the team, give him some more exposure; a left-hander again, looks very promising. So fortunately we can take 17 here, it'll be 15 at the World Cup. So when the time comes we'll take that decision, but at the moment it at least gives the coach and captain an opportunity to have him with the squad."

Varma is currently part of the Bumrah-led Indian squad for the ongoing three T20Is versus Ireland in Dublin. So far, he hasn't managed to do anything significant in the two games but will aim for a big score in the final T20I with India already having an unassailable 2-0 lead.

Varma's inclusion has strengthened India's batting line-up. Now, the national side&nbsp;not only have another left-hander&nbsp;for the middle and lower order but the 20-year-old can also bowl a bit. It will be interesting to see if he makes his ODI debut in the upcoming continental tournament, where India kick off their campaign versus arch-rivals Pakistan on September 2 in Pallekele.

'A left-hander looks very promising': Ajit Agarkar on Tilak Varma's inclusion in India's Asia Cup squad

The Indian Cricket Team is deprived of left-handed batters in the middle order, with Ravindra Jadeja – at number seven, as the only sure starter. Southpaw Tilak Varma, who is making the right noises as things stand in the ongoing Caribbean white-ball series, ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin feels his inclusion, even as a backup in the World Cup 2023 squad, will be a plus for the home team.

As the selection committee will soon name the preliminary squad for the marquee event, starting on October 5 in Ahmedabad, Tilak, as Ashwin feels, will remain in contention. While the onus will be on unfit Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul to take up the number four&nbsp;and five slots&nbsp;respectively, in the worst-case scenario (considering both are injured and unavailable), having Tilak alongside Sanju Samson and even Suryakumar Yadav as backups will not hurt India.

Speaking his heart out on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said knowing how well the left-handers can take down the spinners in the middle overs, with Tilak around, India can utilise his talent and put pressure on big teams like Australia and England.

"This is neck-and-neck with respect to the World Cup. So, will they think about Tilak Varma as an option if we don't have enough backups? Because Sanju Samson has performed really well in ODIs."&nbsp;

"But the exciting part about Tilak Varma is that he is a left-hander and Team India is lacking left-handers. Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja) is the only left-handed batter in the top 7," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

"And look at the spinners from all the top teams. Australia have Ashton Agar. England have Moeen Ali and a leggie in Adil Rashid. So, most teams don't have a finger spinner to challenge the left-handed batters. That is why the emergence of Tilak is crucial," Ashwin added.

<h2>Tilak’s run in the Caribbean is turning heads</h2>

So far, in three outings, Tilak has a fifty to his name and an unbeaten 49, with the latter coming during India’s latest win in the 3rd T20I. His attacking approach has kept him on everyone’s radar, with selectors also keeping a keen eye on him.

Ashwin feels the way Tilak began his career, he made everyone aware of his presence, admitting there is no harm in going ahead with the 20-year-old as India chases first ICC trophy since 2013.

"It is still early, but will they see him as an option? He has at least made everyone notice him. He is surely in the contingency plan. Because any selector who would have seen that knock would have gone, 'Woah!'" Ashwin said.&nbsp;

World Cup 2023: Left-handed Tilak Varma could be a plus in middle order, feels Ravi Ashwin

India’s stand-in T20I captain Hardik Pandya faced severe criticism for not letting Tilak Varma complete his successive fifty against West Indies. During the 3rd T20I in Guyana, Pandya hit a six to wrap up the chase even when Varma, standing on the other side, was playing on 49*. Speaking on the same, former cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra said Pandya doesn’t have to be like MS Dhoni, even if he admires the ex-India captain.

On the one hand, a section of fans and pundits lashed out at Pandya for unnecessarily going for the winning shot even when around two overs were left, others, including Chopra, were of a different opinion – questioning why landmarks are being talked about in this format.&nbsp;

In reference to Pandya’s instance, Chopra reminded about the 2014 T20 World Cup semis instance against South Africa, when MS Dhoni played a forward defense to avoid hitting the winning run because Virat Kohli was standing on the other end, having played a gem of an inning (67 off 42 balls at that time).

"It's an interesting one. Hardik Pandya has been trolled a lot and has been criticised. But there's another school of thought that says, why are you talking about milestones in T20 cricket? So, that was quite in the middle of a conversation," Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube Channel.

"I remember once MS Dhoni played a forward defensive shot because there was Virat Kohli at the other end. He wanted him to finish it off, he didn't want to take the limelight. But Hardik doesn't have to be a Dhoni, even if he considers him an idol," Chopra added.

<h2>Tilak Varma&nbsp;impresses Chopra</h2>

Tilak Varma is one name everyone has been chatting about – and why not, as he has proved to be India's best batter in the three T20Is played so far. After missing out on his debut fifty, though he slammed two sixes off the first two balls of his international career, Varma came good in the second match, completing his maiden half-century in this format.

His range of shots has impressed everyone, and Chopra is not different. Considering Tilak knows about his role, it makes his and everyone else’s job easy.

"Tilak Varma, outstanding. First Indian to get 30+ scores in his first three international innings. He scored a fifty in his previous games and was close to another this time too, in fact, it should've been a fifty. His temperament is good, his range is good, he was aggressive at first and then was happy to play second-fiddle to Suryakumar," Chopra had earlier said on his channel.

India have kept their hopes alive in the ongoing five-match T20I series against West Indies after they ran riot at Providence Stadium in Guyana to register a seven-wicket win. India, trailing 0-2 going into the third T20I contest, had Suryakumar Yadav to thank as the ICC T20I Player of the Year for 2022 played a match-winning 83-run knock. India vs WI: Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma break long-standing records during win in third T20I

India's stand-in skipper Hardik Pandya has been called out by fans for hitting a six with India needing two runs to win the third T20I against West Indies. The six which helped the visitors win their first match of the five-T20I series left youngster Tilak Varma stranded on 49 not out at the other end. Pandya's game-winning six didn't go down well with the fans who called the skipper's act 'selfish' on social media.

Notably, Tilak has been India's top scorer in the first two T20Is which the visitors lost. The southpaw had scored his maiden fifty in the second T20I and added 87 runs for the third wicket with Suryakumar Yadav in the third T20I as well. With India needing 12 off 24 balls and Tilak on 44, Pandya was heard saying to him that 'he has to finish the match.' The skipper's act, although match-winning, was not cool in the eyes of the fans. Here's how some of them reacted:

India vs WI: Hardik Pandya trolled for hitting winning six and not allowing Tilak to reach 50 in 3rd T20I

India's latest batting sensation Tilak Varma has made heads turn with two crucial knocks in his first two T20I matches during the ongoing series against West Indies. The Southpaw top-scored in both games for India as other batsmen failed. Varma scored 39 off 22 in the 1st T20I before hitting his maiden fifty (51 off 41) in the second one. India, however, lost both games and are currently trailing 0-2 in the five-match series.

India's veteran spinner Ravi Ashwin thinks that Varma could be a backup for Men in Blue at the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup. Ashwin, speaking on his YouTube channel, also compared Varma's batting, especially the pull shot, to Aussies.

“The emergence of Tilak Varma has made everyone take notice of him. He looked in imperious touch even on that slow pitch in 1st T20I. His batting style is very unlike for an Indian making his international debut. His game resembles a lot like Rohit Sharma. He sweats on the pull shot. Generally, India batters won’t set up to play the pull shot. It is something they develop later. But his game looks like he has a natural pull shot and sends the ball outside the rope like an Aussie batter,” Ashwin said.

“This is neck-and-neck with respect to the World Cup. So, will they think about Tilak Varma as an option if we don’t have enough backups? Because Sanju Samson has performed really well in ODIs. But the exciting part about Tilak Varma is that he is a left-hander and Team India is lacking left-handers. Jaddu is the only left-handed batter in the top 7. And look at the off-spinners from all the top teams. Australia have Ashton Agar. England have Moeen Ali and a leggie in Adil Rashid. So most teams don’t have a finger spinner to challenge the left-handed batters. That is why the emergence of Tilak is crucial,” he added.

With less than 60 days to go for the World Cup and a cloud of uncertainty over players, namely Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant, Varma surely has emerged as a contender for the backup spot. The lack of form of his contemporaries like Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill, Sanju Samson and Suryakumar Yadav has also helped his case.

Ravi Ashwin picks Tilak Varma as potential ODI World Cup backup for India

West Indies clinched a close two-wicket win over India in the 2nd T20I in Guyana on Sunday. Keeper-batter Nicholas Pooran starred with the bat, hitting a 40-ball 61 as the hosts continued their domination in their favourite format. For the Indian Team, newcomer Tilak Varma completed his maiden fifty, while Captain Hardik Pandya picked three wickets.

Deciding to bat first after winning the toss, India lost Shubman Gill early on seven, while the best T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav soon followed him on one. Both left-handers, Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma, revived the innings and added 42 runs for the third wicket before Romario Shepherd bowled Kishan on 27 off 23 balls.&nbsp;

For the second time in this T20I series, Sanju Samson failed to leave an impact as he got stumped on just seven off Akeal Hosein. Captain Pandya joined attacking batter Varma on the crease, and the pair added 38 runs for the fifth wicket.

Soon after completing his maiden T20I fifty, including five fours and a six, Varma departed on 51. Axar Patel’s handy cameo of 14 off 12 did help the score but failed to accelerate India’s innings as they got reduced to 152 for seven in 20 overs.

Hardik Pandya provided India with an exceptional start by removing Brandon King on a first-ball duck. Johnson Charles departed in the space of three balls (on two) as West Indies lost two wickets inside the first over itself.&nbsp;

Kyle Mayers and Nicholas Pooran turned the tables around with the counter-attacking approach before Arshdeep Singh trapped Mayers plumb in front on 15. Inside the Powerplay, West Indies lost three wickets and looked in trouble.

And while as they say, cometh the hour, cometh the man, in-form Pooran came to his team’s rescue. Alongside Captain Rovman Powell, both unleashed their A-Game and put India on the backfoot immediately. Even after Pandya removed Powell on 21, West Indies were still in the game, thanks to Pooran, who completed his fifty.

Mukesh Kumar provided India with a big breakthrough when he removed Pooran, and soon after that, wickets fell in a cluster. With eight wickets down at one stage, the momentum shifted towards India.

However, there was a twist in the tale, as the bowling pair of Hosein and Alzarri Joseph held their nerves and helped the team chase down the target with two wickets in hand.&nbsp;

With this win, West Indies took a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.

West Indies go 2-0 up in five-match series with two-wicket win in 2nd T20I against India

After a narrow defeat in the five-match T20Is, India also went down in the second match on Sunday (August 6) in Guyana. The Hardik Pandya-led Indian team opted to bat and posted a moderate 152 for 7. Despite reducing the Windies to 129&nbsp;for 8, from 126 for 4, the hosts prevailed on top due to their lower-order's power-hitting to take a 2-0 lead in the series.

Former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra reviewed India's two-wicket loss in the second T20I, on his YouTube channel, and came hard on Sanju Samson's shot selection. Samson is being used as a lower-order specialist in the five T20Is. While he came out to bat at No. 6 in the series opener, he was promoted at No. 5 -- one above captain Hardik -- but the right-hander fell for a run-a-ball 7. Even in the first T20I, he managed a run-a-ball 12.

Chopra criticised Samson's shot selection and feels his batting position&nbsp;should not be blamed for his poor run. In addition, the former cricketer has urged Samson to make the most of his chances to cement his spot else he might be dropped.

<h2>'Is there a place available at the top?'</h2>

"Sanju Samson played a bad shot. Shubman Gill at the start and Sanju Samson in the middle played bad shots. Sanju Samson and his fans can say that he is getting to bat at the wrong number. But is there a place available at the top? If it's not there, what can be done?" Chopra said.

Samson will be desperate to turn his fortunes around in the remaining three games and come up with vital performances for Team India. Meanwhile, Hardik &amp; Co. have to win the remaining three T20Is to clinch the series. Ind vs WI, 2nd T20I: Samson and his fans can say he is getting to bat at wrong number, feels Aakash Chopra

Tilak Varma made a stunning start to his India career, completing his maiden international fifty against West Indies during the second T20I in Guyana on Sunday. The left-handed batter got fast-tracked into the Indian Team following two super seasons with Mumbai Indians in the IPL, where he emerged as a crunch player in the middle order.

Though he was the top-scorer for India on the two-paced wicket during the 2nd T20I, the Men in Blue failed to defend the total, thus going down 0-2 in the five-match series so far. Speaking on the nature of the surface, Tilak noted it was on the slower side and thus thought any total from 150-160 was enough.

But as it turned out, Nicholas Pooran’s masterclass helped West Indies stay ahead in the chase as they won the contest by two wickets.&nbsp;

"The wicket was on the slower side and slightly double-paced, and that's why we thought that 150 or 160 would be a good score,” Tilak told media after the second T20I.

He added India played well, but the execution of slower balls from West Indies bowlers was the turning point of the game.

“I think we were ten runs short; other than that, I thought we played well," Tilak added. "They were bowling really good. When they bowled, they were using slower ones and hard lengths really well, and they used the wind conditions really well."

<h2>‘I am here because of two IPL seasons</h2>

For someone who averages close to 57 in List-A cricket, Tilak has achieved decent numbers in IPL. While he had a strike rate of 131.02 for his 397 runs in IPL 2022, the left-handed averaged 42.88 with a strike rate of 164.11 in&nbsp;IPL 2023.&nbsp;

His ability to absorb pressure and deliver against even the top sides separates him from his contemporaries.&nbsp;

"Everyone knows that the two IPL seasons were my turning point. I am here because of my performances there," Tilak acknowledged. "So I am just playing with that confidence, and going forward, I want to continue what I've been doing."

He even added that Rohit (MI captain), during Tilak’s first season, called him an all-format player - something that boosted his confidence.

"In my first IPL season, he [Rohit Sharma] told me that I am an all-format player, and that was a huge boost for me. That gave me a lot of confidence. He told me from then that I have to be consistent, and for that, I need to be disciplined off the field. So I take his guidance and have been following the things he has told me to do," Tilak said.

The Indian Cricket Team receives a massive boost as ace seamer Jasprit Bumrah returns to the squad for the Ireland T20Is, starting August 18 in Dublin. Bumrah, who was out since September last year due to a back injury, will also lead the new-looking Indian side. Left-handed batter Rinku Singh has also earned maiden India call-up as fast bowler Prasidh Krishna makes the cut.

With more than a fortnight to go before the start of the three-match Ireland T20Is, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee decided to rest the star players as Asia Cup 2023 looms. While regular captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are anyway out of the scheme from this format following the T20 World Cup debacle against England last year, several top names like Ravindra Jadeja, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav, Mohammed Siraj and stand-in captain Hardik Pandya, also got rested.

It means the board picked an inexperienced squad with some new faces, including Rinku Singh. The left-handed batter had outstanding numbers and outings in this year’s IPL to press his case for selection. Though the selectors decided to overlook him for the West Indies T20I, they offered him his maiden chance in India colours at the international level.

Alongside him, keeper batter Jitesh Sharma, who proved his credentials playing for Punjab Kings, also received a call-up, while Avesh Khan and Prasidh Krishna, two seamers who were out of action for some time now, got picked too.

The BCCI selectors named Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar and Shahbaz Ahmed in the all-rounders' category in the 15-man squad.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad were picked as openers, while Sanju Samson retained his place in the T20I squad. Tilak Varma, who also received his maiden call-up for West Indies T20Is, also got picked.

Besides, Bumrah, who finally made his much-anticipated return after 11 months, seamers Mukesh Kumar and left-armer Arshdeep Singh were also named.

Jasprit Bumrah returns to India squad for Ireland T20Is, Rinku Singh earns maiden call-up

A future superstar in the making, Tilak Varma received his maiden India call-up for the five-match T20Is against West Indies. Playing for South Zone in the ongoing Duleep Trophy, Varma revealed receiving advice from stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli and how he dreams about playing for India and bailing them out of trouble in crunch games.

India captain Rohit Sharma, who also leads Mumbai Indians, a franchise Tilak Varma plays for, showered praises on the 20-year-old last year, predicting him to burst onto the international scene sooner than expected.&nbsp;

"Having such a calm head is never easy, and in my opinion, I feel he's going to be an all-format player for India pretty soon," Rohit said about Varma in May 2022.

One year later, the prediction came true as Varma, alongside young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal got their maiden call-ups to the Indian team.

Speaking on the sidelines of the ongoing Duleep Trophy semis against North Zone in Bengaluru, Tilak revealed the India call-up wasn't on his mind currently, and when he received the information of&nbsp;his selection (from his childhood friend), and informed his parents, they turned emotional and shed happy tears while being on a video call with him.

"I was not thinking about the national side," Varma said. "My mom and dad were crying on video call yesterday; they were very emotional. My childhood friend called me [saying] you have got selected. That was the time — around 8 o'clock [pm] — that I knew I was selected."

Thanks to the platform that IPL is, Tilak, quite early in his career, was able to rub shoulders with the legends, including Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit and Virat. Opening up on receiving advice from them, Tilak said,&nbsp;"I have heard a lot from Rohit bhai and Sachin sir, and also from Virat [Kohli] bhai. They always say that when you are in good form, your subconscious mind is in the right place," Varma said. "They also tell me to play close to the body… they always tell that [preparing] off the field is very important."

<h2>IPL treasure set to begin international journey</h2>

In IPL 2023, the young swashbuckler scored 343 runs at an impressive strike rate of 164, the third-best among Indian batters.&nbsp;

Although he is yet to begin his international journey, Tilak revealed he already dreams about playing crunch knocks for India in World Cup.

"I visualise every night how I can bat: if in a World Cup match, we are four or five down for 40 or 50, from there on, how can I take the team forward? It helps in making it easy for me," Varma added.

Superstar-in-making Tilak Varma opens up on receiving advice from Rohit, Kohli ahead of West Indies tour

India have announced their T20I squad for the upcoming tour of the West Indies, with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Tilak Varma getting their maiden call-ups. The batters, both of whom had a stellar IPL 2023, have been named in the 15-member squad led by Hardik Pandya. India will be playing five T20Is, starting from August 3.

Suryakumar Yadav has been named Pandya's deputy in a squad from which names like Rohit Sharma, India's regular skipper and Virat Kohli, the former skipper, have been missing. Notably, Rohit and Kohli have not played for India in T20Is since the 2022 World Cup exit.

This is also the first squad chosen by India's newly elected selection panel of which Ajit Agarkar has been named the head. The new panel seems to have acknowledged the need to move on from the conservative batting approach with the selection of young explosive batsmen.

Overall, he has scored 1,172 runs in 37 IPL games at a healthy strike rate of 148.73 and an average of 32 since making his debut in 2020.

Varma, on the other hand, has been a force for Mumbai Indians in the middle overs since making his debut in 2022. The left-hand batsman has scored 740 runs in his two IPL seasons at an average of around 39 and a strike rate of 144.53. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma get maiden T20I call as India announce squad for West Indies tour

Former Royal Challengers Bangalore player AB de Villiers has picked Rajasthan Royals batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal as his favorite player of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023.&nbsp;

Speaking on Jio Cinema, de Villiers said, "Yashasvi Jaiswal for me and by a long margin for sure. He is a young player and has got all the shots in the book. He has a calm and composed temperament at the wicket and I love what he does, dominating the bowlers and always looks like he is in control."

On the question of why not Shubman Gill - who is having a breakout season with Gujarat Titans, having scored 851 runs in 16 matches at an average of around 60 and a strike rate of 156, ABD said, "Shubman is a little bit older, I think Jaiswal's got a long way to go, and he has all the credentials to become a great."

Notably, Jaiswal, after making his debut in 2020 with Rajasthan Royals, Jaiswal has come of age in 2023, having scored 625 runs in 14 matches at an average of 48 and a strike rate of 163. The southpaw has also scored one century and five fifties as well. Such has been his dominance that last year's Orange Cap holder and Royals' other opener Jos Buttler's failures have been entirely shadowed by Jaiswal.

Shubman Gill, on the other hand, is batting on an entirely different planet this season. Gill Gill is having a breakout year with the GT, having scored 851 runs in 16 matches at an average of 60.79 and a strike rate of 156. The swashbuckling batsman has also hit four fifties to go with his three hundreds and has a high score of 129.

Jaiswal, however, has become mature in his approach season by season and in the current one, he has ensured that once there's a start, he doesn't let it go and turns it into a big innings.

IPL 2023: AB de Villiers picks THIS young star as his favorite player in league over Shubman Gill, Tilak Varma

Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag is among the many former players who have been impressed by Mumbai Indians batsman Tilak Varma. The southpaw had a great 2023 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), scoring 343 run in 11 matches at an average of 42.88 and a strike rate of 164.

Sehwag, however, wants Varma to focus on his fitness now that MI's season has come to end following their 62-run loss in the second qualifier against Gujarat Titans.

Speaking to cricket website Cricbuzz, Sehwag said, "He should focus on 2 things; improve his fitness, and identify the skills that he can work on, as well as the mindset. It often happens when you play regular cricket, you change yourself with time. But when you're not playing cricket, you have to focus on your fitness and your skills. Like Suryakumar Yadav, he practiced a lot for his shots."

Sehwag also said that the young batsman should work on his weakness, whatever it may be, and told an anecdote about him which included an advice from former India captain Sourav Ganguly as well.

“Tilak Varma should focus on improving his weakness. It reminds me of him, when I played for India for the first time in 1999, I was dismissed by Shoaib Akhtar. Before I could bring my bat down, the ball hit my pad. So, Dada (Sourav Ganguly) told me one thing... go back, practice against fast bowling, so you come better prepared. I used to play middle-order, I got spin, and by the time fast bowlers came, I had already scored a century. Likewise, Tilak Varma needs to look on where are his weaknesses,” Sehwag said.

Tilak was unfortunate to miss out on some matches but has grown leaps and bounds in 2023 after making his debut in the league with the Mumbai Indians. The left-hander, though scored less run this season but has improved both his average and strike rate this season, giving Mumbai much needed impetus in the middle overs.

IPL 2023: Virender Sehwag wants MI's Tilak Varma to work on 'weakness' during off season

Mumbai Indians' IPL 2023 season as they put behind the disappointment of 2022 behind before getting knocked out in the Qualifier 2 at the hands of Gujarat Titans. The seaosn saw the rise of Tilak Varma and Akash Madhwal in the absence of Jofra Archer and Jasprit Bumrah.

Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma has praised youngster Tilak Varma for show he has put on since making his debut in IPL last year. Varma, who started with the Indians in IPL 2022, has scored 214 runs in five matches so far in 2023 at an average of 53.50 and a strike rate of 158.52.

"We watched Tilak last season, and he showed what he can do with the bat, and he's not looked away from it this year as well," said Rohit Sharma at the post-match presentation after MI beat SRH on Tuesday. "What I like about his game is his approach. He's not playing the bowler, he's playing the ball, which is quite important," he added.

Rohit also went on to predict a bright future for the left-handed batsman and said that he'll be playing for different teams soon.

"For someone of his age, coming out and playing the way he is, he's got a long way to go, and we will see him play for some different teams," said the skipper.

Notably, Varma has been the bright spot in Mumbai lackluster season which is getting on the track slowly with three wins in last three matches.

In 2022, Tilak scored 397 runs in 14 matches with two fifties and at an average of 36. His strike was also near 131 and he was not out three times batting down the order.

Seeing his talent, MI promoted him a little up the order this season and he instantly repaid the faith shown in him with an innings of 84 not out off 46 balls in MI's season opener against RCB. On a pitch where all the other Mumbai batters struggled, Tilak looked ever so elegant in his knock as he helped MI post a competitive total of 171.

RCB, however, won the match by eight wickets, but Tilak made an instant impact after which MI have stuck to him playing in the upper middle-order only.

Mumbai Indians star Tilak Varma adds another feather to his cap, joins hands with Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya

India are gearing up for the third and final T20I versus New Zealand, to be held at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad on Wednesday (February 01). Ahead of the series finale, with the scoreline being 1-1, former Indian spinner and captain Anil Kumble lavished praise on some young Indian players and mentioned two&nbsp;future superstars.

Having worked closely with pacer Arshdeep Singh, during his sting as Punjab Kings' (PBKS) coach, Kumble lauded the left-arm seamer and reckoned he has a bright future. In his limited international appearances, Arshdeep has taken 39 T20I wickets in 25 matches and was part of Rohit Sharma-led India's Asia Cup and T20 World Cup campaigns.

"Having worked closely with someone like Arshdeep, it’s wonderful to see him grow into what he’s done for India. I would look at Arshdeep as the next superstar bowler coming through," said Kumble on JioCinema.

Among the young batters, India have abundance of talents in the form of Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, Prithvi Shaw, Rahul Tripathi and the likes. Kumble, however, picked ODI double centurion Ishan as a superstar in the making.&nbsp;"From a batting perspective, Ishan Kishan is someone who’s been wonderful in the opportunities he’s got. He got a double hundred and he’s someone who I think will be a superstar," Kumble asserted.

Meanwhile, former Indian stumper Parthiv Patel mentioned two different names. "He's (Umran) quick and bowling well and already played for India. He’s someone who can be a superstar. Batting-wise, having seen Tilak Varma in the last couple of years, I had the opportunity to scout him and see the cricketer he has become. We’ve seen his batting ability, and he has the ability to go on and lead the side. He’s someone who comes across as a leader."

At present, Hardik-led Indian T20I team will be eager to win the three-match series versus the Kiwis before the action moves to the much-awaited Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and visitors Australia, starting on February 09.

IPL 2022: Former India all-rounder points out 'major headache' for struggling Mumbai Indians

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has heaped praise on Mumbai Indians (MI) youngster Tilak Varma. The left-hand batter has impressed in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 so far with his brilliant batting for the five-time champions. He was roped in by Mumbai Indians for a sum of Rs 1.7 crore (INR 17 million) at the mega auction in February this year.

Tilak, a former India U-19 player, has shown a lot of potential on the big stage and has done well for the franchise in their first two matches of the season. After scoring 22 runs in MI's opener against Delhi Capitals, Tilak slammed his maiden IPL half-century in their next game against Rajasthan Royals.

Mumbai Indians failed to chase down the target of 194 runs in their last game against Rajasthan Royals but Tilak was one of the positives for the team as he slammed a quickfire 61 off 33 balls. Shastri, who is currently on commentary duties during the ongoing IPL 2022, has been left impressed by the youngster's shot selection and temperament.

“He has shown a lot of potential in both the innings he has played for Mumbai Indians. I am impressed looking at his wide range of shots- front foot, back foot, sweep. There’s a lot of variation in his shot selection,” Shastri said on Star Sports.&nbsp;

“His composure, body language and temperament is very good for a young player. He’s batted very confidently. This player has the potential to go ahead. Tilak Varma has shown positive intent with his batting and these are good signs for Mumbai Indians. Once Suryakumar Yadav is back in the playing eleven, Mumbai’s middle-order will be strong,” the former India head coach explained.

A number of franchises including the likes of Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals and others had expressed interest in signing Tilak at the IPL 2022 mega auction this year. His base price was just Rs 20 lakh (INR 2 million) but the bidding wars between the teams resulted in the right-hand batter going to Mumbai Indians for Rs 1.7 crore (17 million).

Tilak is expected to feature regularly at number 3 for Mumbai Indians this year having impressed in the first two games. Mumbai Indians are known for grooming young talents in the league and Tilak can be one of the stars for the team in the future if he can realise his potential with the five-time champions.

'He has the potential to go ahead': Ravi Shastri heaps praise on Mumbai Indians youngster Tilak Varma

Mumbai Indians (MI) youngster Tilak Varma is one of the Indian talents to watch out for in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Verma, a former India U-19 player, is a skilled right-hand batter, who is set to be a regular feature in the Mumbai Indians playing XI this season.

He has been impressive for the franchise in their first two matches and notched up his maiden IPL fifty against Rajasthan Royals in their last game. Mumbai Indians have suffered back-to-back defeats in their first two matches of the season so far but there have been a few positives for the five-time champions.

While Tilak has showcased his talent with the bat, MI's huge investment in star wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan has also paid off well. Kishan has been at his destructive best in the IPL 2022 so far with back-to-back half-centuries in the first two games.

While Mumbai Indians had paid a huge sum of Rs 15.25 crore (INR 152.5 million) to rope in Ishan at the mega auction in February this year, Tilak was bought for Rs 1.7 crore (INR 17 million). After doing well for Mumbai Indians in their first two games, Tilak opened up about the hardships he has faced in his cricketing journey so far.

Tilak revealed he has seen his family deal with financial difficulties growing up and it was not easy for his father to pay for his cricket-related expenses from his meagre salary. However, now that the 19-year-old has earned an IPL contract, his only aim is to buy a house for his parents.

“Growing up, we’ve had a lot of financial difficulties. My father with his meagre salary had to look after my cricket expenses as well as my elder brother’s studies. In the last few years, with some sponsorship and match fees, I could just about take care of my cricketing expenses,” Tilak was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

“We don’t own a house as yet. So with whatever I have earned in this IPL, my only aim is to get a house for my parents. This IPL money gives me the luxury to play freely for the rest of my career," he added.
