IPL 2025: Mumbai Indians beat Delhi Capitals by 12 runs in a thriller

Mumbai Indians head coach <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mahela-jayawardene">Mahela Jayawardene</a> described the decision to retire out <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/tilak-varma">Tilak Varma</a> during their clash against Lucknow Super Giants as a 'tactical' move, aimed at injecting fresh energy into the chase as the required run rate began to spiral out of reach.
Chasing a target of 204, MI's innings was a rollercoaster, featuring bursts of dominance before Lucknow&rsquo;s disciplined bowling brought the game to a nail-biting finish. With 29 runs needed off the final 12 balls, Tilak Varma was expected to deliver some late fireworks. However, after facing five dot balls in Shardul Thakur&rsquo;s penultimate over, the MI think tank decided to retire him out. Tilak walked back having scored 25 off 23 balls with just two boundaries, making way for <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mitchell-santner">Mitchell Santner</a> in a bold move that drew mixed reactions from the cricketing world.
At the post-match press conference, Jayawardene explained the reasoning behind the unusual call. &ldquo;Tilak did well early on when we lost that third wicket and built a solid partnership with Surya. He was trying to accelerate but couldn&rsquo;t get going. Ideally, having spent time in the middle, he should have found that big hit. But with the asking rate climbing rapidly, I felt we needed someone fresh to take charge. It wasn&rsquo;t an easy call, but it was purely tactical,&rdquo; he said.

In the tense final moments, skipper <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/hardik-pandya">Hardik Pandya</a> took it upon himself to drag MI closer to the target. He smashed a powerful six over deep extra cover, reducing the target to 14 runs from four balls. Refusing to take a single to rotate strike, Hardik stood his ground &mdash; but couldn&rsquo;t quite script the comeback as MI fell 12 runs short. Lucknow Super Giants celebrated a hard-fought victory, their bowlers having held their nerve in the death overs.
<h2>'Hardik used his experience brilliantly'</h2>
While Hardik couldn&rsquo;t deliver with the bat in the chase, he had already left a massive imprint on the game with the ball. He claimed his maiden five-wicket haul in T20 cricket and etched his name in IPL history as the first captain to achieve that feat. His 5/36 spell included the prized wickets of Aiden Markram, Nicholas Pooran, Rishabh Pant, and David Miller. He returned to bowl the final over of the LSG innings and cleaned up tailender Akash Deep to cap off a sensational performance.
Jayawardene praised Hardik&rsquo;s tactical acumen with the ball. &ldquo;He used his experience brilliantly. He realised the pitch demanded pace off and shorter lengths &mdash; something we probably should&rsquo;ve done earlier during the powerplay. But he adapted quickly, pulled things back, and gave us a solid shot at chasing the target.&rdquo;

Besides, Tilak entered the record books with his unbeaten knock in Chennai, registering over 300 runs in his last four T20I innings (107* vs SA, 120* vs SA, 19* vs ENG and 72* vs ENG), remaining unbeaten in all. The pair added 122 runs for the second wicket before Agarwal departed on a well-made 55 off 23 balls inside the 10th over. That wicket, however, did not stop Tilak and incoming Rahul Buddhi from playing their natural game, as Hyderabad crossed the 200-run-mark soon after. Another wicket fell inside the 18th over, but Tilak’s heroics powered his team to a massive 248 for four in 20 overs.

SMAT: Tilak Varma becomes first batter to hit three consecutive T20 tons with record hundred for Hyderabad

Sanju Samson was on a rampage during the fourth and final T20I against South Africa at the Wanderers on Friday (Nov 15), hitting his second hundred of the series and third in the last five games. Though he and Tilak Varma, fellow centurion, entertained the Johannesburg crowd with an excellent show, one of Samson’s nine sixes left a fan in the stands inconsolable after the ball deflected from the boundary boards only to hit her on the face.

The shot hit off Tristan Stubbs’ flighted delivery was hard, but the blow was harder, as replays showed how impactful it was. While the onlookers immediately jumped to her rescue, bringing her the ice pack as she continued weeping, Samson also raised his hand to apologise.&nbsp;

SA v IND, 4th T20I: Female fan inconsolable after Samson's six hits her face, batter apologises - WATCH

India T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav said that the key to their series win against South Africa was adapting to the conditions. India won the four-match series 3-1 after beating South Africa in the final T20I on Friday (Nov 15). India posted a humongous total of 283/1 in 20 overs in the fourth game with both Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma hitting unbeaten centuries.

“There’s no secret to adapting to the conditions. Our plans were very clear as soon as we landed in Durban. Though we were up 2-1 in the series, today we wanted to follow good habits and not worry about the result," Surya said at the post-match presentation.

“It happened naturally. It’s very difficult for me to choose one good knock from them, we spoke about that and they walked the talk," he added.

The Indian skipper also shared that the experience from their last tour also helped as they knew how the wicket was going to play.

“When we toured last year, we knew there was something in this wicket once the lights were on and the temperature dropped. It gives a big boost if you are winning any ICC tournament. It was difficult to sum up what went through our minds when we won there," Surya said.

“It is very challenging when we tour South Africa, this is a special win and will stay with me forever," he added.

“They (coaching staff) were sitting and enjoying the show, they spoke to the boys and said whatever you want, you do, we will sit and enjoy. Even today, they say if you want to bat first and put runs on the board, do it," concluded the skipper.

Chasing the total, South Africa could never get going and managed only 148 in reply and lost the match by 135 runs.

SA vs IND, 4th T20I: Samson, Varma smash records left, right and centre as India pocket series 3-1

Tilak Varma hit a maiden international century as India beat South Africa by 11 runs in the third Twenty20 international at SuperSport Park on Wednesday. The 22-year-old left-hander made an unbeaten 107 off 56 balls in an Indian total of 219-6. South Africa were restricted to 208-7, giving India an unbeatable 2-1 lead in the four-match series.

"I was waiting for this for a long time, coming back after injury," Varma told host broadcaster SuperSport, referring to a hand injury which restricted his playing time in 2024. Varma epitomised the "fearless cricket" espoused by captain Suryakumar Yadav.&nbsp;

Promoted to number three in the batting order, he faced the third ball of the match after Sanju Samson was bowled for a second successive duck by Marco Jansen.&nbsp; He immediately went on the attack, hitting the second and third balls he faced from Jansen for four and six as he launched an innings which included eight fours and seven sixes.

"I was just thinking I have got an opportunity to bat at number three and I just wanted to express myself," he said. "We played the brand of cricket we wanted to play," said Suryakumar, who revealed that Varma had requested a promotion up the batting order. "He asked for it and he responded," said the captain.

Fellow left-hander Abhishek Sharma was similarly aggressive, hitting 50 off 25 balls with three fours and five sixes in a second-wicket stand of 107 off 52 deliveries with Varma.

South Africa were never up with the required run rate but some big hitting by Heinrich Klaasen (41) and Jansen (54) enabled the hosts to score 105 runs off the last seven overs. Klaasen hit three sixes off successive balls from leg-spinner Varun Chakravarthy, India's most successful bowler in the first two matches.

Jansen thrashed a 16-ball half-century before falling leg before wicket to left-arm opening bowler Arshdeep Singh off the third ball of the final over. Put under pressure by Abhishek and Varma, South Africa bowled three no-balls and 10 wides, which ultimately proved the difference between the two teams, with India bowling only one wide.

Brief scores:

India 219-6 in 20 overs (A. Sharma 50, T. Varma 107 not out; A Simelane 2-34, K. Maharaj 2-36).

South Africa 208-7 in 20 overs (H. Klaasen 41, M. Jansen 54; Arshdeep Singh 3-37, V. Chakravarthy 2-54).

Result: India won by 11 runs.

Axar's catch came at a vital time. David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen were in the middle for SA with the hosts needing 86 off the last five overs. In the 16th over, Miller smashed Hardik for a six on the fourth ball and went for another maximum on the next delivery. It was a short-pitched ball and Miller seemed to have timed it well. However, it didn't get the desired elevation. Axar, on the other hand,&nbsp;quickly judged the height of the ball and timed his jump to perfection to claim the catch. After Miller's fall, SA were 142/5 and had a herculean task to win.

Klaasen (41) and Marco Jansen (17-ball 54) kept SA alive, however, the visitors held their nerves to win by 11 runs. Arshdeep Singh (3 for 37) and Varun Chakravathy (2 for 54) were the wicket-takers for India as the Suryakumar Yadav-led Men in Blue now have a 2-1 lead.

After the match, India captain Surya said at the post-match presentation, "Very happy with the way things are going. Aggression and intent is always not about talking. They have made my job easier when I see them bat like that. I feel we are in the right direction."

The series finale will be played on Friday (Nov 15) in Johannesburg.

India beat South Africa by 11 runs in the third and penultimate T20I, in Centurion, on Wednesday (Nov 13) to take an unassailable 2-1 lead in the series. Riding on Tilak Varma's 107* and Abhishek Sharma's 50, India posted 219/6 before restricting Proteas for 208/7.

According to the statement from the management, Dube won’t be in the squad for the T20I series having failed a fitness test. He was a vital member of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) squad during the Indian Premier League (IPL) which saw him get into the Indian team. Under coach Gautam Gambhir he has been an important part of the white-ball set-up and was called up to both T20I and ODI squad during the Sri Lanka series.

After Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s retirement from the T20I format Dube has been an automatic choice into the squad.

IND vs BAN: Blow for India as Shivam Dube gets ruled out of T20I series; Tilak Varma roped in as replacement

Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Hardik Pandya has blamed the loss against Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on April 27 on 'lack of intent shown by Tilak Varma' in the middle overs. Notably, Tilak was MI's highest scorer with 63 off 32 before being run out on the first ball of the last over in a chase of 258.

"Axar bowling to a left-hander [Tilak], the better option could have been to go after him," Hardik said after the game. "I think it was just a little game awareness that we missed out. At the end of the day, that cost us the game," said Pandya after the 10-run loss.

Hardik's comments came on the back of left-hand batter Tilak's slow start during which he scored 10 off 10 balls, mostly facing the left-arm spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel - a favourable match-up in the format. Tilak eventually broke the shackles by sending Axar for 10 runs on the last two balls of his second over - which proved to be his last in the match.

"The way the games are going and how the bowlers are under pressure throughout the competition, we backed ourselves to do it, the self-belief [was there]," Hardik said about MI's mindset on chasing the total.&nbsp;

"But if I have to pinpoint, a couple overs in the middle, we could've taken some extra chances," he added.

With the loss, MI's sixth in nine games, it has now become almost confirmed that the five-time champions won't be able qualify for the playoff in their first season under skipper Pandya.&nbsp;

DC, on the other hand, are having a bit of turnaround with five wins and same number of losses in 10 games. They currently are fifth on the 10-team points table.

India's young batter Tilak Varma wants to finish games for the team and has been learning the art from Rinku Singh. The batter made the comments on the eve of second T20I against Australia in Thiruvananthapuram on November 25. India had won the first match by two wickets and Tilak scored 12 runs in the game while Rinku finished it with 14-ball 22.

"I like finishing the games," he said. "I am learning [that] from Rinku as he has been doing it very consistently, even for the Indian team. I think in the coming matches I will be doing that."

Chasing 209, India needed 75 of 7.3 overs when Tilak walked in to bat. He did hit Aussie leg spinner Tanveer Sangha for couple of fours but got out while trying to be aggressive.&nbsp;

"I was batting at No. 5 in the last game, so my mindset was if it is in my arc, I will go for it. Otherwise, I will just rotate [the strike]," said Tilak about his innings.

The left-hand batter, however, is not keeping any expectation with himself and is just looking to fulfill the&nbsp;role given to him by the team.

"My mindset is clear. I have got a role in the team, so I just want to stick to that role. I don't have any pressure or expectations of doing well. I am just looking forward to fulfilling my role for the team," said the batter.

Tilak came to limelight with his IPL performances for Mumbai Indians. In the two seasons he has played in the league, the batter has scored 740 runs in 25 games. While he scored 397 runs in 14 games at an average of 36 in his debut season in 2022, he managed 343 runs in 2023 season at a much healthier average of 42.

Tilak, along with other fringe players like Rinku and Jitesh, has been given a chance in Australia series as seniors are given a rest post ODI World Cup 2023.

Team India will rest several first-team players against Bangladesh in their last Asia Cup Super Four tie on Friday, September 15. The Men in Blue were the first team to qualify for the Asia Cup final after beating Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Against Bangladesh in the dead rubber in Colombo, India could rest seamers, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, bringing in Mohammed Shami and Prasidh Krishna in their place.

The latest reports suggest that vice-captain Hardik Pandya could also be rested while bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur could return for his third game match of Asia Cup 2023.&nbsp;

Though none of the top three - Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli is likely to make way for anyone, chances of watching non-regular faces in the middle order in this game are higher.

KL Rahul, who returned to the ODI XI for the first time since March this year, scored a hundred against Pakistan in the previous game, while Kishan also pressed his case for a spot in the side as the World Cup approaches. Besides them, Shreyas Iyer, who sweat it out in the nets in the additional session on Thursday in Colombo, might not get included in the XI due to his fitness.

In this case, if the management decides to rest both KL and Kishan, star T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav and debutant Tilak Varma could be seen taking care of middle-order duties.&nbsp;

While SKY, as most of Suryakumar fans call him, has received backing from several former cricketers over straightaway breaking into the XI during the mega event, he would love to bank on it and convert it into a star performance.

It could also mean that Tilak Varma, the future superstar, could begin his ODI journey on a grand stage like the Asia Cup.&nbsp;

<h2>Benched players to be tried</h2>

While Shami and Krishna are likely to get a game against Bangladesh, the star performer in the bowling department - Kuldeep Yadav, will retain his place in the XI alongside Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, both of whom played against Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, India will face the winner of the Sri Lanka vs. Pakistan match in Super Four in Colombo in the final on September 17.

Asia Cup 2023: Bumrah, Pandya to be rested for Bangladesh game, Tilak Varma likely to debut - Reports

Team India announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup, at home, starting on October 5. From India's current 18-man Asia Cup squad, including a reserve player, the trio of Prasidh Krishna, Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma have been dropped as the rest 15 made the cut in the final squad. It is to be noted that all the teams have until September 28 to make any changes to the squad. Thus, some late changes might take place.&nbsp;

After BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar named India's final 15 in a press conference along with captain Rohit Sharma in Sri Lanka, the duo took some questions from the reporters.

Sympathising with the dropped players, Rohit said, "There are no surprises and you can only get 15 in. Some of the guys will be disappointed. I have gone through it and I know how it feels. We have good all-round options and this is the best 15 we could get."

It is to be noted that Rohit played his first 50-over World Cup in 2015 as he was left out of MS Dhoni-led India's victorious squad from the 2011 edition. Back in 2011, when India co-hosted the mega event with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, Hitman was overlooked as his competitors Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina got a look-in.

However, Rohit revamped in style and had a decent run in 2015 whereas came to his best in the 2019 edition, ending as the highest run-getter (648 runs with five centuries) in England and Wales. Thus, the 36-year-old has gone through a lot of ups and downs and will surely lend a supporting hand to the players who failed to make the cut.

Rohit insisted that India are yet to find their right combination and added, "I have not thought about plans yet. The problem of plenty is a good problem to have. We have to see who is in form and who our opposition is. We need to see what the best possible combination could be. If someone misses out, then so be it. This keeps happening. You have to make tough calls for the team."

India will open their campaign versus Australia in Chennai&nbsp;on October 8 whereas the CWC 2023 opener will be held on October 5 with defending champions England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad.

At present, the Men in Blue are gearing up for the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup 2023 edition, where they will take on Pakistan on Sunday (September 10).&nbsp;

The deadline to announce the initial squad for the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup is September 5 and former India opener Wasim Jaffer thinks that Tilak Varma should get a nod ahead of Suryakumar Yadav. India will play against Nepal in Asia Cup 2023 on Monday, September 4 ahead of the squad announcement. Both Varma and Yadav were not part of India's Asia Cup opener against Pakistan.

"I will probably take out Prasidh Krishna and it would be a tough choice between Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav. I'll pick Tilak Varma even though he has not played ODI cricket at all for India. But looking at how he bats and plays his cricket, I think he is more suited to one-day cricket. Suryakumar does have a lot of promise and he has not cracked the code of ODI cricket despite getting a lot of opportunities," Jaffer said while talking to ESPNcricinfo.

Jaffer, however, added that the only concern the India team has is about Jasprit Bumrah's ability to bowl 10 overs - something which he hasn't done since coming back to the team post back injury. During the match against Pakistan, India couldn't bowl as rain didn't let the second innings take place.

"Only concern was Jasprit Bumrah if he could bowl 10 overs, which we did not get to see. But I am hoping he is alright, because he played well in Ireland. KL Rahul has not played yet, but I am hoping once he passes the fitness test, he will be fine. Whether he gets to play or not we will see," Jaffer said.

As for the Nepal game, Jaffer said there won't be many changes in the XI from the team that played against Pakistan. Jasprit Bumrah, however, won't be available for the game as he travelled back&nbsp;home for the birth of his first child. The pacer is expected to be back for the next round though.

Jaffer bats for inclusion of Tilak Varma instead of Suryakumar Yadav in India's ODI World Cup squad

Former India chief selector Kris Srikkanth has hailed the potential of talented youngster Tilak Varma after a mature showing in his debut series against the West Indies in July and August. However, the legendary former opener feels Varma should not be in the Playing XI for the World Cup as he lacks experience and should be groomed in the ODI series against big teams. Varma scored 173 runs in five T20I matches during the West Indies tour before getting a reality check in Ireland with just one run in two innings.

<h2>Kris Srikkanth’s take on Tilak</h2>

"Tilak Varma, the point that I'm making was also conveyed by Ganguly. Don't give him a debut in a big tournament. First, let him play a few ODI series. Ganguly also had the same point of view."

"Tilak Varma has fantastic potential. Tilak Varma is a brilliant player. But don't let him be in the playing lineup for the World Cup. Let him play in a few ODI series and then the upcoming T20 World Cup and groom him till the next ODI World Cup. There is something called grooming a youngster."

After bursting onto the scene during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season, Tilak Varma has attracted the attention of the cricketing fraternity. He was a surprise inclusion in the Indian squad for the Asia Cup 2023 and is also in the fray to be a part of the ODI World Cup.&nbsp; The Mumbai Indians star was touted for a call-up to the Indian team after impressing in IPL 2023 as well.

<h2>Could Varma make World Cup squad?</h2>

Currently, the southpaw is down the pecking order and is likely to miss out on a place in the squad for the Asia Cup. The selectors'&nbsp;panel led by Ajit Agrakar is likely to go with the same Asia Cup squad for the World Cup, with a couple of players missing out. Varma looks like the likely option as he comes in as a third-choice backup&nbsp;in the middle order.

Varma along with Prasidh Krishna are likely to miss out on the ODI World Cup squad, but&nbsp;any injury to any player from the proposed squad could see the doors open for them. India’s squad for the ODI World Cup will be announced before September 5.

CWC 2023: Former World Cup winner hails Tilak Varma's impact but suggests 'don't let him be in the Playing XI'

Former Australia batsman Matthew Hayden has backed youngster Tilak Varma's selection in India's Asia Cup squad. Varma has been included in the 17-man Asia Cup squad which is being played in a 50-over format as a precursor to ICC ODI World Cup. Hayden thinks it's a good strategy to have Tilak in the side as it would keep other players 'honest.'&nbsp;

"We've seen the class of Tilak Varma. I think it's a good strategy in terms of not just this World Cup but even potentially getting into the next World Cup as well," Hayden said while attending an event in Mumbai.&nbsp;

"The great thing about India is it's got a really solid one-two-three combination. Similar to Australia actually, when you look at their last four or five months, they've had a really good and strong - what we like to call - the engine room. And then they've got some good problems to solve through the middle order.

"And if they can fill spots with talented young players like Tilak Varma, put pressure on someone like Suryakumar Yadav, I think that's a good strategy. Keep everyone honest in the side and performing. So not a bad move. I think it's a great side."

Varma made his debut for India on the recently-concluded West Indies tour where he emerged as the side's best batsman in limited-overs matches.

India announced the squad for Asia Cup, scheduled to be hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, on Monday, August 21. Battling a few injury issues, the Asian giants saw a lot of big names coming back to the ODI side namely KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Jasprit Bumrah.

While Rahul and Iyer are making a comeback after a long time following an injury layoff, Bumrah also made his return to international cricket after a prolonged injury during the Ireland T20I series. Bumrah is also captaining the three-match T20I series which India are leading by 2-0.

A few names, however, were missing from the squad which is also expected to be named for the World Cup and the most notable one is leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal.
