Sanju Samson was on a rampage during the fourth and final T20I against South Africa at the Wanderers on Friday (Nov 15), hitting his second hundred of the series and third in the last five games. Though he and Tilak Varma, fellow centurion, entertained the Johannesburg crowd with an excellent show, one of Samson’s nine sixes left a fan in the stands inconsolable after the ball deflected from the boundary boards only to hit her on the face.

“It happened naturally. It’s very difficult for me to choose one good knock from them, we spoke about that and they walked the talk," he added.

The Indian skipper also shared that the experience from their last tour also helped as they knew how the wicket was going to play.

“When we toured last year, we knew there was something in this wicket once the lights were on and the temperature dropped. It gives a big boost if you are winning any ICC tournament. It was difficult to sum up what went through our minds when we won there," Surya said.

“It is very challenging when we tour South Africa, this is a special win and will stay with me forever," he added.

Jaffer, however, added that the only concern the India team has is about Jasprit Bumrah's ability to bowl 10 overs - something which he hasn't done since coming back to the team post back injury. During the match against Pakistan, India couldn't bowl as rain didn't let the second innings take place.

"Only concern was Jasprit Bumrah if he could bowl 10 overs, which we did not get to see. But I am hoping he is alright, because he played well in Ireland. KL Rahul has not played yet, but I am hoping once he passes the fitness test, he will be fine. Whether he gets to play or not we will see," Jaffer said.

As for the Nepal game, Jaffer said there won't be many changes in the XI from the team that played against Pakistan. Jasprit Bumrah, however, won't be available for the game as he travelled back&nbsp;home for the birth of his first child. The pacer is expected to be back for the next round though.

Varma has been included in the 17-man Asia Cup squad which is being played in a 50-over format as a precursor to ICC ODI World Cup. Hayden thinks it's a good strategy to have Tilak in the side as it would keep other players 'honest.'&nbsp;

About performing in the ODIs, Varma said he's pretty confident given that he has played a lot in domestic List A cricket.

"I'm pretty confident about playing one day cricket because I have played ODI cricket for long as you said, like in the List A cricket. I have done well in List A cricket for my state and the teams also have done well, so I'm pretty confident that I can do well in ODIs, so I'm looking forward to it," said Varma.

He has an average of over 50 and he scored a fifty in the West Indies also. There is no doubt that he plays well. He has a little work experience as well."

We all know that he is a very good player and we also want his ODI career to flourish but the truth is that he hasn't been able to understand the ODI template thus far. The problem is that you have very little time. " He added, "To be very honest, my initial thought was that if a wicketkeeper has to play in the middle order, Sanju Samson is definitely the second option after KL Rahul. However, if a place can be created as an opener, then Ishan Kishan, without a shadow of a doubt, is your second wicketkeeper."

The right-hander has 390 runs in 13 ODIs at an average of&nbsp;55.71 and a strike rate of&nbsp;104.00 along with three half-centuries. The Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee picked a strong squad which sees the return of KL Rahul and&nbsp;Shreyas Iyer whereas pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna have also&nbsp;made an ODI comeback after a lengthy injury layoff. The duo marked their international return&nbsp;during the ongoing Ireland T20I series opener.

The squad comprises 17 players whereas Sanju Samson has been named as a backup. The main squad also includes Tilak Varma, who is yet to make his debut in the ODI format. Varma, after a stellar run in IPL 2023 for Mumbai Indians (MI), got his maiden international cap during the India-West Indies T20Is, in West Indies and Florida. The left-hander impressed with scores of 39, 51, 49*, 7*, 27.&nbsp;

Former India pacer Agarkar, who is spearheading the BCCI selection committee, opined on Varma's inclusion and said after the squad announcement, "In West Indies, we saw some real promise in terms of not just performances but the temperament."

He added, "And it gives us an opportunity to take him with the team, give him some more exposure; a left-hander again, looks very promising. So fortunately we can take 17 here, it'll be 15 at the World Cup. So when the time comes we'll take that decision, but at the moment it at least gives the coach and captain an opportunity to have him with the squad."

Varma's inclusion has strengthened India's batting line-up. Now, the national side&nbsp;not only have another left-hander&nbsp;for the middle and lower order but the 20-year-old can also bowl a bit. On Monday afternoon (August 21), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed India's 17-man squad for the forthcoming Asia Cup 2023 edition, to be jointly hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee picked a strong squad which sees the return of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer whereas pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna have also made an ODI comeback after a lengthy injury layoff. The duo marked their international return during the ongoing Ireland T20I series opener. The squad comprises 17 players whereas Sanju Samson has been named as a backup. The main squad also includes Tilak Varma, who is yet to make his debut in the ODI format. Varma, after a stellar run in IPL 2023 for Mumbai Indians (MI), got his maiden international cap during the India-West Indies T20Is, in West Indies and Florida. Former India pacer Agarkar, who is spearheading the BCCI selection committee, opined on Varma's inclusion and said after the squad announcement, "In West Indies, we saw some real promise in terms of not just performances but the temperament." So fortunately we can take 17 here, it'll be 15 at the World Cup. So when the time comes we'll take that decision, but at the moment it at least gives the coach and captain an opportunity to have him with the squad." While the onus will be on unfit Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul to take up the number four&nbsp;and five slots&nbsp;respectively, in the worst-case scenario (considering both are injured and unavailable), having Tilak alongside Sanju Samson and even Suryakumar Yadav as backups will not hurt India.

Speaking his heart out on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said knowing how well the left-handers can take down the spinners in the middle overs, with Tilak around, India can utilise his talent and put pressure on big teams like Australia and England.

"But the exciting part about Tilak Varma is that he is a left-hander and Team India is lacking left-handers. Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja) is the only left-handed batter in the top 7," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

"And look at the spinners from all the top teams. Australia have Ashton Agar. England have Moeen Ali and a leggie in Adil Rashid. So, most teams don't have a finger spinner to challenge the left-handed batters. That is why the emergence of Tilak is crucial," Ashwin added.
