On Sunday (May 22), the Chetan Sharma-led selection committee announced a 17-man squad for Rohit Sharma-led India's fifth and final Test versus England, which will be held in early July at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

Among the four senior players who were dropped for the home series versus Sri Lanka, in March, Cheteshwar Pujara is the only one to have stormed his way back into the squad. Pujara was rewarded for his memorable run for Sussex in the County Championship in England. The right-hander returned with 720 runs in 8 innings at an average of 120.0, including two double-tons, to make a comeback into the Test line-up for the series decider versus England, i.e. a part of the incomplete series held last year in the United Kingdom.

Thus, former chief selector MSK Prasad reacted to Pujara's comeback in whites and hailed his commitment. “Unbelievable. Only one word I can say is an unbelievable comeback. This shows the commitment he has towards the sport and himself. It's a wonderful story,” Prasad told NDTV.

At the time of MS Dhoni's sabbatical, post the 2019 ODI World Cup, many had their doubts about Rishabh Pant's abilities and whether he would be able to fill in the humongous shoes of the former. Nonetheless, the 24-year-old Pant has stepped up his game since late 2020 and is now raising his stature slowly and steadily for India across formats.

Hence, Pant is already India's first-choice keeper-batter in all forms of the game and is now even being trusted with leadership roles. Thus, the left-hander has served as India's vice-captain in the recent home series and has been named as KL Rahul's deputy in the forthcoming home T20Is versus South Africa. Moreover, he is handling captaincy duties for the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the IPL as well. Thus, comparisons are bound to happen between Pant and his idol Dhoni.

Virender Sehwag had a stellar run for Team India across formats. While his playing style was more suited to the limited-overs, the former Indian opener proved his critics wrong with some stunning performances in the red-ball format. As a result, he ended with 8,586 runs in whites, including two triple tons. In fact, he scored more in Tests after 8,273 runs in his ODI career and, hence, defied the odds.

Despite his fruitful run in whites, Sehwag was dropped from the Test line-up for a year after playing his 52nd match in the format. Before India's famous tour of Australia in 2007-08, he was recalled into the side on then captain Anil Kumble's insistence. While the decision was questioned by many, Sehwag proved Kumble's decision right by scoring big in the last two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Recently, Sehwag hailed his former skipper Kumble for showing faith in him.

“Suddenly, I realised I was not part of the Test side; it hurt. I would have ended with 10,000+ Test runs had I not been dropped for that period,” Sehwag told Sports 18.

After not being a part of the playing XI for the first two Tests in the India-Australia series Down Under, Sehwag recalled Kumble's words ahead of a practice match before the penultimate Test. “Score a 50 in this match, and you will be picked for the match in Perth.”

As a result of returning with a century in the India-ACT Invitation XI match, Sehwag stormed his way back into the XI for the Perth Test. He gave a good start to the team in both the innings and also claimed two wickets in India's famous 72-run win. However, it was in the fourth and final Test where the ex-Indian opener showed his class and announced his return in style, scoring 63 and a match-saving 151-run knock in the second innings.

“Those 60 runs were the toughest I scored in my life. I was playing to repay the faith Anil Bhai put in me. I did not want anyone to question him for bringing me to Australia. I was focused on the striker’s end; on the other end, I spoke to the umpire, humming my favourite songs. The pressure was gone," Sehwag added.

Virat Kohli entered IPL 2022 after being free from captaincy responsibilities altogether. While he had relinquished Team India's captaincy in the shortest format and also stepped down as Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) skipper post last year's season, he was sacked as India's ODI skipper and he also resigned as the Test captain.

Thus, many thought he would go all-out in the 15th season of the IPL, being held in India. Nonetheless, he ended the league stage with only 309 runs at a strike rate of 117.93 along with two fifties. While he can still turn the tides in the playoffs, after having played his best knock in RCB's last league stage outing, many are concerned about Kohli's form in a T20 World Cup year for the Men in Blue.

However, former Indian spinner-turned-commentator Murali Karthik has backed Kohli to remain in India's T20I scheme of things as he can deliver at any time.

"You can't keep such players out of the squad for tournaments like the T20 World Cup because they have earned the right to be there for what they are and what they can do at the end moment," Kartik said on 'CricChat Season 2' on ShareChat Audio Chatrooms.

Kohli has been rested for India's upcoming five T20Is versus South Africa, at home, from starting June. Thus, he will take some time off before going all-out for India in an important calendar year, comprising the T20 World Cup in Australia in October-November.

'You can't keep such players....' - Former India spinner backs Virat Kohli amid batting concerns

On Sunday (May 22), the BCCI selection committee released an 18-member Team India squad for their upcoming five-match T20I series versus South Africa, which is set to be held in India from June 09. While regular captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah have been rested, KL Rahul has been given the task to lead the side comprising some young and veteran cricketers.

While some uncapped players such as Umran Malik and Arshdeep Singh have been rewarded following their performances in IPL 2022, Ishan Kishan managed to hold onto his place despite an ordinary run in the 15th season for the five-time winners Mumbai Indians (MI). Being the most expensive player in this year's mega auction, the 23-year-old Ishan ended the 15th edition with 418 runs at a strike rate of 120.11 in 14 matches. He wasn't at his consistent best and surely felt the pressure of a heavy price tag.

Thus, many raised concerns about seeing Ishan's name in the 18-man squad, however, former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif has backed the selection of the MI and India opener. He cited examples of Rohit and Virat's ordinary runs with the bat in the ongoing season and defended Ishan. For the unversed, Rohit ended with not even a single half-century whereas Kohli too struggled for runs but has managed two half-centuries in 14 games with his IPL franchise, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) still alive in the competition with a hard-earned playoffs ticket.

Sanju Samson-led Rajasthan Royals (RR) have joined the IPL 2022 playoffs for the first time since 2018 edition. While many players have stood tall for the one-time winners, R Ashwin's inclusion and the out-of-the-box usage of the star player from the team management has helped the RR franchise extensively in the 15th season.

Ashwin has not only bowled some tidy spells, picked up crucial wickets from time to time but the 35-year-old has become a vital cog of Samson & Co. by virtue of his cameos and overall contributions with the bat. In 14 games, 183 runs with a fifty -- his maiden IPL half-century -- and a match-finishing 40 not out in a moderate run-chase versus defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) recently.

Thus, Ashwin is having a ball in IPL 2022 and looks set to continue in a similar stead for the inaugural champions in the playoffs. He started his career as an opening batsman, not at the first-class level may be, but at the club level. Now he has become one of the greatest spinners in the game," Gavaskar told Star Sports. "And he also knows that he is a batsman who has got five Test hundreds. So he can bat, he knows that. He has now shown that he can do it in the ultra-short format and be in the Indian team for the World Cup in Australia. That is his aim and that is why he is so excited about his own batting performance. He's showing with the ball and with the bat that ‘Hello! Pick me’," Gavaskar added. 'Hello! Pick me': Sunil Gavaskar backs RR star to be part of Team India squad for T20 World Cup

Team India's squad for the five T20Is versus South Africa was announced on Sunday (May 22). While the regular captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah have been rested and Ravindra Jadeja-Suryakumar Yadav are injured, BCCI's selection committee announced a strong 18-member squad which will be led by all-format vice-captain KL Rahul.

In the Rahul-led India squad, many young guns and uncapped players have been included for the series versus Temba Bavuma-led Proteas. Among them, Dinesh Karthik's comeback has been highly-talked about. At 36, not many would've given him a chance to return to the national team, who last played in 2019. However, Karthik's magnificent run in IPL 2022 has changed the script in his favour.

In 14 games, Karthik has so far amassed 287 runs at an average of 57.40 and a strike rate of 191 playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Thus, he is expected to come good even in the playoffs for RCB and then feature in India's playing XI for the SA series. Nonetheless, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra snubbed DK and Kuldeep Yadav from his probable line-up for the upcoming home series.

On his Youtube channel, Chopra said, "What is the composition of the XI you are going to see? I feel you might see Ishan Kishan opening alongside KL Rahul. But there are a lot of keepers, so he might not open, you can open with Ruturaj Gaikwad and not Ishan Kishan, that's a choice." Chopra then named vice-captain Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya as automatic starters in the middle-order and called for Shreyas Iyer as well as Deepak Hooda's inclusion.

He added, "After that, you will keep Axar Patel in the team because you want a little depth in the batting. So Axar as a left-arm spinner and a batter. If you play Axar, you will only be able to play Yuzi Chahal." His pace department comprises Bhuvneshwar Kumar, one among Arshdeep Singh and Harshal Patel and either of Umran Malik or Avesh Khan.

Mayank Agarwal-led Punjab Kings (PBKS) ended their run in IPL 2022 with a five-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), who finished in the eighth position. As Punjab have managed to reach the playoffs only on two occasions since the inaugural season, they will be hugely disappointed as Mayank & Co. looked a strong unit on paper but never gained consistency throughout the season.

Despite their failure to enter the playoffs, Punjab still have quite a few positives in the form of performances from Arshdeep Singh, Jitesh Sharma, Liam Livingstone, etc. Due to his economical returns despite bowling the tough overs, Arshdeep reaped rewards and was named in India's 18-man squad for the upcoming T20Is versus South Africa, to kick off on June 09.

Following Arshdeep's inclusion, former Punjab and Team India opener Virender Sehwag lauded the pacer and compared him to former Indian speedsters Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra. "Arshdeep has impressed me because he bowls two of the last three overs for Punjab Kings. He may not have that many wickets, but his economy rate is brilliant. He is the bowler who bowls one over with the new ball and two in the slog overs. I have only seen Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra do that during my time. Now, its Arshdeep and Bumrah, and Bhuvneshwar as well. It is a very difficult job to bowl in the slog overs,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.

Talking about Arshdeep's numbers in IPL 15, he ended with 10 scalps from 14 games at a splendid economy rate of 7.70. On Sunday (May 22), the BCCI selection committee announced an 18-member Team India squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series versus South Africa, starting from June 09. While the big guns such as regular captain Rohit Sharma, former skipper Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah have been rested, KL Rahul will lead the line-up, which also sees the comeback of Dinesh Karthik.

Karthik, who had donned the commentator's hat last year, has seen his career getting revived in IPL 2022, where he is representing the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Karthik got a new lease of life at the RCB, where he has made heads turn being a fantastic finisher for the three-time runners-up and rescuing them from several precarious situations. In 14 games, Karthik has amassed 287 runs at an average of 57.40 and a strike rate of 191.

Thus, Karthik's IPL 15 knocks have helped him make a comeback in Team India setup. In a video shared by RCB, the veteran keeper-batter thanked Bengaluru's top brass Sanjay Bangar, Mike Hesson and Indian captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid for instilling faith on him.

"Very happy. Very very very satisfying. I must say this has been my most memorable comeback because a lot of people had given up on me and for me to do what I did, practice with the way I did with my coach Nayar. So many special things in the lead to the auction and how I practiced post that. I lot of credit also to Sanjay Bangar and Mike Hesson. The clarity that they gave me to execute the role that I wanted to, in many ways I am indebted to RCB for picking me and believing in me," said Karthik who was roped in by the francse for 5.50 crore at IPL mega auction.

"A lot of credit must go to the selectors, Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid because these days with so many young boys putting their names for selection, to see the skillset that is there and then to believe that this is the guy we need for the World Cup, it is a very very humbling feeling. I know the journey is still there to the World Cup but to be a part of the scheme of things and giving me an opportunity to showcase my skills and I am very proud of it," Karthik added.

'A lot of people had given up on me' - Dinesh Karthik reacts after his memorable Team India comeback

Many had their doubts over Rishabh Pant and whether he would be able to replace MS Dhoni across formats, after the veteran's retirement. While Pant took some time to take off in all forms of the game, the 24-year-old has now come to his own and made the wicketkeeper's slot his own in every format.

Filling in for Dhoni can never be easy for anyone, be it in IPL or for Team India, however, Pant is slowly making his own identity as an explosive middle-order batter for the national side (and also for his IPL franchise, i.e. the Delhi Capitals). Ahead of India's next assignment, which will be a five-match T20I series at home versus South Africa in early June, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag feels Pant can be more successful as an opener.

Sehwag told Sports 18, "We don’t play limited-overs to score 50 or 100 but to score at a brisk pace, no matter the situation or the opposition,” Sehwag told Sports 18, “At no. 4 or 5, he will find himself in situations that demand greater responsibility, but if he opens, he will be far more successful."

Pant has 1,920 runs in 30 Tests and has been more successful in whites. In limited-overs, he has 715 and 683 runs in ODIs and T20Is, respectively.

'If he opens, he'll be more successful: Virender Sehwag rates Rishabh Pant's chances as Team India opener

Former Indian opener-turned-commentator Virender Sehwag recently made heads turn with his remark on Rawalpindi Express Shoaib Akhtar. While Akhtar was a force to reckon with and was an integral part of Pakistan's pace attack during his playing days, his international career was marred with several controversies, including his bowling action.

In this regard, Sehwag made a big claim that Akhtar used to jerk his elbow while bowling. "Shoaib knows he used to jerk his elbow; he knew he was chucking too. Why would ICC ban him otherwise?. Brett Lee's hand came down straight, so it was easy to pick the ball. But with Shoaib, you could never guess where the hand and the ball will come from,” Sehwag had told Sports 18.

While many waited for Akhtar's response following Sehwag's comment, the former speedster -- who ended with 444 international scalps -- has now opened up on the ex-Indian opener's recent allegations. "I would request Sehwag to not pass such comments. If Sehwag knows more than ICC, he is entitled to his opinion. My statement to Sehwag will be a bit different. I feel he was one of the greatest match-winners India has ever produced. He was a team man and among the greatest openers to have ever played for India."

“At the moment, I am at that stage and age where I'm careful while dishing out my opinions. I don't want to pass a comment or insult any player who has played on the national level. I haven't seen the interview. Sehwag is a close friend but I don't know if he has commented jokingly or if he is being serious,” Akhtar told Sportskeeda.

'Cricketers must ensure harmony between India-Pakistan' - Akhtar on Sehwag's 'chucking' allegation

Virat Kohli remains the talk of the cricketing fraternity despite his dismal run in IPL 2022. So far, the former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captain has amassed only 236 runs at an average of 19.67 and a poor strike rate of 113.46 with a solitary fifty under his belt.

While a lot has been said and written about Kohli and how he should take a break in order to rediscover his form and comeback motivated as ever for Team India, the 33-year-old recently opened up on the prospect of taking a breather from cricket and spoke about his goals for the national side.

"I know how motivated I will be when the scores start coming," Kohli told Star Sports. "I want to win India the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup; that's the motivation."

"I have to move forward maintaining a balance, get some rest, some rejuvenation, once I'm in the mindset then there's no looking back and... it's great fun. My main aim is to help India win the Asia Cup and the World Cup and for that I am ready to do anything for the team," he told former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh in a chat for Star Sports.

While Ravi Shastri, Kevin Pietersen and many others have called for Kohli to take a break from the cricketing activities, the latter opened up in this regard and said, "It's not a lot of people who mentioned it. "It is definitely a thing that one needs to consider because you don't want to do something which you are not a part of 100% and I have always believed in that in my life. So, to take a break and when to take a break is obviously something that I need to take a call on, but it is only a healthy decision for anyone to take some time off and just rejuvenate yourself mentally and physically.

"Not so much physically because physical fitness you keep up with through the course of playing cricket all the time, but it is a mental kind of reset that you need, and you want to be excited for what you are doing. You don't want to feel like you have been forcing yourself into any situation," Kohli added.

With India's T20I squad to be announced for the forthcoming South Africa series, from June 09, it seems Kohli will get a break and will likely return to action for the fifth and final Test versus England, in early July.

"I want to win India the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup; that's the motivation." "I have to move forward maintaining a balance, get some rest, some rejuvenation, once I'm in the mindset then there's no looking back and... it's great fun. My main aim is to help India win the Asia Cup and the World Cup and for that I am ready to do anything for the team," he told former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh in a chat for Star Sports. I want to win India the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup, says former skipper Virat Kohli

Since the 2000s, Indian men's cricket has been blessed with some brilliant captains which have led to the national side's resounding success. While Sourav Ganguly had to start from scratch after taking over post the match-fixing saga, Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble did well for a brief period before MS Dhoni took over and later passed on the baton to Virat Kohli. Kohli recently resigned from captaincy from two formats and was sacked as an ODI skipper as Rohit Sharma has succeeded him across all forms of the game.

Every Indian captain, since the 2000s, has had unique qualities. Recently, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag compared the captaincy styles of Ganguly and Kohli and made a bold claim. Sehwag, who was also Dhoni's deputy for a long time, feels while Ganguly built a new team and backed players to the core, Kohli didn't do the same despite enjoying some good success in the skipper's role.

“Sourav Ganguly built a new team, brought in new players and backed them through their highs and lows,” Sehwag told Sports 18. “I doubt if Kohli did that in his tenure.” He added, "In my opinion, the #1 captain is the one who builds a team and gives confidence to his players. He (Kohli) backed some players, some he did not."

MS Dhoni-led India created history when they won the 2011 ODI World Cup as they became the first-ever host country to return with the elusive trophy and also end the country's 28-year-long title drought in the 50-over format.

En route to the title, Dhoni & Co. defeated the likes of Australia, West Indies, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in the summit clash. India's only defeat came versus South Africa whereas they played a humdinger of a clash versus England in the league stage. Playing their second game of the tournament, at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, India faced the Andrew Strauss-led Poms in a high-scoring affair.

Batting first, India rode on Sachin Tendulkar's 120 and fifties from Gautam Gambhir-Yuvraj Singh to post 338 all-out in 49.5 overs. In reply, Strauss' 158 and Ian Bell's 69 ensured England were cruising at 281-2 before a lower-order collapse saw them end at 338/8 as the match ended in a tie.

Recently, former English spinner Graeme Swann recalled the epic contest and shared an interesting story, where Indian captain Dhoni wasn't pleased with his fielders.

"We were cruising, we were all laughing and joking in the changing room. 'Hah, they are 20 runs short', 'Hah, look at how good we are'. Then all of a sudden, Mishra (Piyush Chawla) got a couple of wickets (of Jonathan Trott and Tim Bresnan). We got really bogged down then. And suddenly, we were never winning the game. And then, as it always happens in one-day cricket, it was down to bowlers to bail out the batsmen and try to win. So, we walked in. I hit Mishra (Chawla) for a six! I picked a googly and hit him for a six and it kind of got us back to the game.

“We still needed 14 runs to win. And Aj (Ajmal Shahzad) came in, and he's like, 'what's happening big lad?' I went, 'mate, let's just do our best'. And in his first ball, he smacked it straight over my head for a six. He's like, 'Oh my god, I can't believe that!'” Swann (chuckled) recalled in a video for cricket.com.

'It wasn't a very happy MS Dhoni' - Graeme Swann recalls final moments from epic India-England CWC'11 tie

Team India will return to action very soon after the conclusion of the IPL 2022 edition. The Rohit Sharma-led national team is set to lock horns with South Africa in a five-match T20I series at home, starting from June 09. With India also set to resume Test rivalry with England in the fifth and final match of the 2021 series, the marquee players are reportedly set to miss the SA T20Is.

Thus, Indian selectors are most likely going to announce a second-stringed side for the South Africa series, followed by a white-ball assignment versus hosts Ireland. Amid all this, the South African team recently announced a strong squad for the India T20Is, comprising regulars such as Aiden Markram, Rassie van der Dussen, Lungi Ngidi, skipper Temba Bavuma, Anrich Nortje, etc. Despite many of them currently being a part of the IPL 2022 edition, the Proteas line-up boosts a strong squad. Thus, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has urged the national selectors to not rest India's regulars for the upcoming bilateral T20Is.

"If you were thinking that an experimental squad can be put out for this series and take June lightly before the tour of England, just think again. South Africa have tied India's hands now and will win the series if an ordinary team is put out. India have to play pretty much everyone," Chopra said on his Youtube channel.

'Don't rest your main players' - Former Indian opener makes special request to national selectors for SA T20Is

Team India's cricketing calendar will resume as soon as the IPL 2022 edition concludes, on May 29. The senior men's team's hectic schedule will once again see two teams in action at the same time, as was the case last year. A white-ball squad will face South Africa at home and Ireland in their own backyard, whereas the red-ball team will be on the England tour in June-July.

Thus, the Indian team will have two captains leading the national side simultaneously along with two coaching staff at work. In head coach Rahul Dravid's absence, who will be with the Test line-up, National Cricket Academy's (NCA) current head VVS Laxman is likely to step in his former teammate's role and act as the head coach for the white-ball assignments versus SA and Ireland. Earlier this year, the former Test specialist had assisted the victorious Yash Dhull-led India U-19 team in the Junior World Cup in West Indies.

“We now have a warm-up game against Leicestershire on June 24 before the Birmingham Test. Rahul Dravid and team will leave on June 15th or 16th. We will be asking VVS (Laxman) to step in for India South Africa T20’s and Ireland T20’s," a top BCCI official was quoted as saying by InsideSport.in.

In mid-2021, a similar such arrangement was made within the Indian team. In June-July, the then head coach Ravi Shastri was with the Virat Kohli-led Indian team in the United Kingdom for the WTC final and England Tests. On the other hand, the previous NCA chief Dravid took over the coaching role for the Shikhar Dhawan-led Indian side touring Sri Lanka, during the same time in late July.

Shane Watson remains one of the best all-rounders to have graced the gentlemen's game. He represented Australia at the international level for 14 years, playing several memorable knocks, chipping in with key wickets and taking some breathtaking catches for the Men in Yellow.

Despite him retiring from international cricket after the 2016 T20 World Cup, Watson continued to play in franchise leagues and did well in the IPL (scoring over 500 runs for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2018). Currently, Watto is a part of the Delhi Capitals (DC) franchise in IPL 2022. Recently, the 40-year-old lavished praise on ex-Indian fast-bowling all-rounder -- also part of Delhi camp -- Ajit Agarkar and narrated how he riled up former Aussie skipper Steve Waugh.

"Ajit Agarkar is just an awesome guy. I have played a little bit against him, more so towards the back end of his career. Javagal Srinath bowled good pace but Ajit… I remember him coming into the Australia summer - I think it was 1999, Brett Lee's debut year - he came and bowled at great pace. He stirred up the Aussies a lot, in a big way. I remember him trying to bounce out Steve Waugh and Steve Waugh wasn't that pleased," Watson said on the Delhi Capitals podcast.

'He stirred up the Aussies a lot' - Shane Watson lavishes huge praise on ex-India pacer

Virender Sehwag was a special talent. Making a mark in a batting line-up comprising members of India's golden era, such as Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman was never going to be easy for anyone. However, Sehwag had his own way of approaching the game and played his own way despite many criticism.

While Sehwag excelled in the ODI format, and also struck at 145.38 in 19 T20Is for India, he exceeded expectations with his performances in the purest format of the game. Not having a textbook technique, Sehwag surprised one and all by amassing 8,586 runs in whites, striking at a whopping 82.23 along with 23 tons and 32 fifties.

Recently, speaking to Sports 18, Sehwag opined that while the likes of SRT, Dravid, Ganguly and others scored centuries in 150-200 balls, he reached the milestone lot earlier than them, helping him in creating his own identity. "Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Sourav Ganguly all would score their centuries playing 150-200 balls. If I scored hundreds at the same rate, no one would remember me. I had to score runs faster than them to create my identity,” said Sehwag, who represented India in 104 Tests and ended with an average of 49.34.

While many batters tend to slow down or play cautiously en route a triple-figure mark, Sehwag continued to play fearless cricket and continued to take on the bowlers by sticking to his approach. In this regard, he added, "I always thought that if I stayed till the end of the day, I should score 250 runs, and in that process, I obviously would have to cross 100, 150, 200 and so on. So, there was no pressure in hitting a ball to or over the fence in the nineties because the goal was not to stop at 100."

Virender Sehwag was a special talent. Making a mark in a batting line-up comprising members of India's golden era, such as Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman was never going to be easy for anyone.

ALSO READ | Not Ravindra Jadeja! The IPL 2022 edition is surely closely being followed by the Indian selection committee with the T20 World Cup set to be held later this year, in Australia. Many veteran, out-of-favour, and young players have a chance to showcase their skills and credentials in order to appear in the Indian squad for the showpiece event.

In this regard, veteran wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has been phenomenal in IPL 15. Karthik, who had an ordinary run in the last two IPL seasons, has scored 274 runs in 12 games at a strike rate of 200.00 by playing some memorable cameos and match-finishing knocks. Thus, he has surely made heads turn and is now in the reckoning for a Team India comeback for the T20 WC.

Little Master Sunil Gavaskar has backed Karthik to take up the lower-order batter's responsibility for India in the showpiece event. "The way the IPL is going for him at the moment, I do believe he should be very much in the running for the India spot in the October tournament, maybe even earlier for South Africa, for England, I do believe he should be earlier in the team," Gavaskar told Sports Today.

"I would definitely look at him as a batter who can come in at No. 6 or No. 7 like he is doing for RCB and take the game away from the opposition," Gavaskar added.

Gavaskar revealed that he spent a lot of time with Karthik when the latter turned into a commentator last year, especially during the WTC final and India-England Tests in the United Kingdom. "I spent a lot of time with him last year. We spent about 10-12 days in quarantine in Belgrade, Serbia where we practically sort of spending 12 to 14 hours a day, eating lunch, dinner, and breakfast. Spending time with him, I got to see how keen he was to come back to the Indian team. He was keen to come back to the team that played in the UAE last year. That didn’t quite happen. It was perhaps a little too close. The IPL that year didn’t go all that well for him," Gavaskar concluded.

Will DK make a comeback into the Indian team for the mega event Down Under? Only time will tell...

Amid the IPL 2022, the Indian team's head coach Rahul Dravid is getting some off time from national duties. Since the past few days, speculations have been rife that the former Indian captain is set to attend a BJP event in the poll-bound Himachal Pradesh. However, the 49-year-old has now responded to all such speculations.

Speaking to news agency ANI on Tuesday (May 10), Dravid dismissed the talks of attending a BJP Yuva Morcha meet in the poll-bound state in the coming days. "A section of the media has reported that I will attend a meeting in Himachal Pradesh from May 12th-15th, 2022. I wish to clarify that the said report is incorrect," Dravid was quoted saying by the news agency.

Dravid's response came after BJP Dharamsala MLA Vishal Nehria had claimed that the Team India coach will grace his presence in the Yuva Morcha's National Working Committee session in Dharamshala. "The National Working Committee of BJP Yuva Morcha will be held in Dharamshala from May 12 to 15. The national leadership of BJP and the leadership of Himachal Pradesh will be involved. BJP National President JP Nadda, National Organization Minister and Union Minister will also attend the session," Nehria had earlier said.

Dravid took over as India's head coach after Ravi Shastri's tenure came to an end post the 2021 T20 World Cup. Since then, India have been unbeaten in T20Is, beat West Indies in three ODIs before being whitewashed by South Africa in a three-match series earlier this year, won a home Test series versus New Zealand and Sri Lanka but lost the Test series versus hosts South Africa 2-1.

Virat Kohli's form has become a huge talking point in world cricket. The 33-year-old has been without an international century since late 2019. In fact, he has now completed over 100 matches across formats, including IPL 2022, without a triple-figure mark.

While Kohli has contributed with half-centuries, mainly in white-ball formats, his struggles have been evident from time to time. In IPL 15, he has only one fifty-plus score and has amassed 216 runs at an average of 21.60 and a strike rate of 111.91. Many former cricketers such as Ravi Shastri, Kevin Pietersen, Parthiv Patel, Virender Sehwag, Ian Bishop, etc. have commented on Kohli's struggles. Now, former Pakistan captain and wicketkeeper-batter Rashid Latif has joined the bandwagon and made a big statement.

"Every player goes through this phase, some come out of it early, some take a long. Guys like Kohli have more pressure because they are attractions. Ravi Shastri and others have suggested rest but Virat Kohli knows best."

"When he was in form, he would score heaps of runs. The way he used to perform, Virat was set to break Sachin Tendulkar's record with ease, he had scored so many hundreds. He took it to the extreme. But now when he is dealing with bad form, that too has come at extreme, that too has peaked," Latif said on his Youtube show 'caught-behind.'

Reflecting on Kohli's struggles in the 15th season of the IPL, Latif added, "He has to come out of this rough patch himself. Everyone has the belief in him and he will come back, and the day he realised it himself, he will start doing it. Against Gujarat Titans, he has started doing it (Kohli scored a 53-ball 58). I could see that touch,"

"In the last few games, there were a few inside-edged and things like that but the other day against GT, he hit a couple of crisp drives, played Shami well, and he looks on good touch. If he can continue doing it, runs will come," concluded Latif.

To back Latif's claims, it did look realistically possible for Kohli to break or come near Tendulkar's tally of international tons (100). In late 2019, Kohli had registered his 70th century. While he can get back to form and deliver the goods as he used to earlier, it seems unlikely that Kohli will now come close to Tendulkar's tally.

'He was set to break Sachin Tendulkar's record' - Ex-Pakistan captain opines on Virat Kohli's struggles

India's tour of Pakistan in early 2004 was a historic affair. Not only did the tour take place after a long hiatus, but Team India and Pakistan engaged in a high-voltage ODI and Test series before the visitors returned victorious in both the formats.

After staging a comeback from being 2-1 down to win the five ODIs 3-2, the Indian team shifted focus to the three-match Test series opener, in Multan. While the first Test is widely remembered for Virender Sehwag's magical 309, first Indian with a triple ton in whites, stand-in captain Rahul Dravid's controversial decision also made heads turn when he declared India's first innings with Sachin Tendulkar stranded on 194*.

Recalling the epic Test and the declaration, former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh feels that the Tendulkar should've been given a chance to complete his double ton. Back then, Yuvraj was batting with Tendulkar and as soon as he got out on 59, Dravid made the bold declaration with India well-placed at 675-5 on Day 2.

"We got a message in between that we had to play fast, and we were going to declare,” Yuvraj said on Sports 18's Home of Heroes.

Yuvi further asserted, "He could have got those six runs in another over and we bowled 8-10 overs after that. I do not think another two overs would have made a difference to the Test match."

The former southpaw added, “If it was the third or the fourth day, you have to put the team first and they would have declared when you were at 150. There is a difference of opinion. I think the team could have declared after his 200."

Eventually, India weren't needed to bat again in the opening Test as Inzamam-ul-Haq-led Pakistan were dismissed for 407 and 216, losing by an innings and 52 runs. Sehwag was the Player-of-the-Match but Dravid's decision remained a topic of discussion for long.

Later, regular captain Sourav Ganguly (who was out due to an injury) returned for the remaining two Tests as India won the series 2-1.

Umran Malik has been a sensation in IPL 2022. On Thursday evening (May 05), when the Kane Williamson-led Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) locked horns with the Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai, in match 50 of IPL 2022, the speedster created history by bettering his own record as he bowled the fastest delivery of the 15th season, clocking an unbelievable 157 kmph.

For the unversed, Umran had made heads turn when he bowled a searing yorker to MS Dhoni at 154 kmph in SRH's previous encounter versus the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), in Pune on May 1 (Sunday). While Umran has made a habit of clocking over 150 at regular intervals this season, he has also churned out 15 scalps in 10 games. However, he was punished severely by DC opener David Warner on Thursday evening, as the Aussie opener smashed 21 off his over in the powerplay.

Umran had already hit 154.8 kmph in match 50. However, he was breathing fire in the final over which was full of pace. He clocked 156 and 157 kmph in back-to-back deliveries and, thus, created history. Despite his unmatched pace, the 22-year-old young pacer returned wicketless, 4-0-52-0, as SRH bowlers were punished by the DC batters. Riding on David Warner's 92 not out and Rovman Powell's 67*, DC posted a mammoth 207-3 in 20 overs as SRH are in a spot of bother in the tall run-chase at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai.

Umran, who was a net bowler for Team India in their 2021 T20 World Cup campaign, has been very successful in IPL 2022 under the guidance of Dale Steyn. He remains a regular for the Hyderabad franchise and will be desperate to take the one-time winners to the playoffs this season. He has already been hailed and heavily praised by many former cricketers who have also urged Indian selectors to rope him in India's squad for the forthcoming home T20Is versus South Africa.

While Umran has made a habit of clocking over 150 at regular intervals this season, he has also churned out 15 scalps in 10 games. However, he was punished severely by DC opener David Warner on Thursday evening, as the Aussie opener smashed 21 off his over in the powerplay. ALSO READ | DC vs SRH: David Warner's 92* takes him to an elite list, overtakes Chris Gayle to have most T20 fifties Umran had already hit 154.8 kmph in match 50.

DC vs SRH: UNBELIEVABLE! Umran Malik bowls fastest delivery of IPL 2022, clocks 157 kmph

Virat Kohli's poor form with the bat has become a huge topic of discussion in world cricket. While Kohli hasn't scored a century in international cricket since late 2019, his form in IPL 2022 is also a cause of concern for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) franchise.

Though RCB are very much in contention for the playoffs, their former skipper Kohli hasn't got going in the 15th season. So far, Kohli has amassed only 216 runs at an average of 21.60 and a strike rate of 111.91. Even in some innings where he has scored runs, he has gone at an ordinary run-a-ball. During RCB's 13-run win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK), on Wednesday (May 04) in match 49, Kohli again got a start but returned with a 33-ball 30. A game earlier, he had scored his first fifty of the season, versus Gujarat Titans (GT), but ended with a 53-ball 58. Thus, former West Indies speedster-turned-commentator Ian Bishop has expressed his concern over Kohli's dry run, below-par strike rate and knack of getting out to pff-spinners (Moeen Ali dismissed Kohli in CSK-RCB clash).

"For a while, for 10 or 15 runs, he wasn't even going at a run-a-ball, or he was just going at a run-a-ball," Bishop said on ESPNcricinfo's 'T20 Time Out'. "He didn't get ahead, and there wasn't much intent. He hit one (six) over extra-cover off the seamer (vs CSK), and that was when he just went ahead to a run-a-ball and then he came back.

"This is something we've been seeing with Virat, not just this season. Even last season, I remember, and even sometimes internationally, he'll fly out - he didn't fly out tonight - and then he'll slow down again. So, I'm concerned," opined Bishop.

"Roston Chase got him out in the West Indies series (at home in February), we saw him getting out to the off-spinner in Test matches. So, I'm concerned about ... and I'm a Kohli fan. I tune in to watch cricket when Kohli's at his best, so it isn't criticism but an observation that I am concerned that a number of types of bowlers are getting him out and he's not getting ahead of the rate," added the veteran.

Amid his struggles, Kohli has been advised by many former cricketers, such as Ravi Shastri, MSK Prasad, Kevin Pietersen, etc., to take a significant break from cricket in order to stay afresh and return to scoring ways for Team India.

This is something we've been seeing with him: Ian Bishop expresses concern over Virat Kohli's poor form

Virat Kohli's form remains a concern. During the IPL 2022 edition, he achieved an unwanted feat of going over 100 matches across formats without a century. While Kohli scored his first half-century for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in their tenth outing this season, he only managed a 53-ball 58. Even in RCB's reverse fixture versus the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Kohli returned with an unimpressive 33-ball 30.

As his struggle for runs continues, the whole of the Indian cricket fraternity is concerned by King Kohli's barren run. His last international ton came in late 2019 and at present, he is looking far from his usual best. Amid all this, former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri had advised him to pull out of IPL 15 and take a much-needed break. Now, former Indian chief selector MSK Prasad has also joined the bandwagon and asked Kohli to take a significant rest to return completely fresh before the Asia Cup.

Further, MSK also called for KL Rahul to be tried at No. 4 in T20Is with Shikhar Dhawan-Rohit Sharma opening the innings.

"These three are indispensable if fit. There is no way that you can leave anyone of them for the World T20. But yes, if I look at numbers, I might just try someone like Shikhar Dhawan at the opening slot and check Rahul out at No.4. He has a T20 hundred in Manchester some years back in middle-order, so why not. But yes, I want Virat to take a significant break and before the Asia Cup, he should be fresh, up and running," Prasad told PTI.

It remains to be seen if Kohli takes a break in the near future. At present, it seems highly unlikely given that Faf du Plessis-led RCB haven't cemented a place in the playoffs in this year's IPL season. Given that India will play the T20 World Cup, to be held in Australia later this year, Kohli's form is extremely critical to the Men in Blue's chances in the showpiece event.

MS Dhoni has done wonders in world cricket since his debut in late 2004. The veteran cricketer has made a resounding name for himself with his unorthodox yet effective wicketkeeping, finishing skills, power-hitting in limited-overs whereas he also did reasonably well in the purest format of the game.

Apart from his runs and centuries, ending with 17,266 international runs, 16 tons, 108 half-centuries and 829 dismissals behind the stumps, Dhoni has been inspirational as a leader. For Team India, he won all three major ICC titles as captain and also led the national side to the No. 1 spot across formats. Even for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Dhoni has guided the Yellow Army to four IPL trophies and two Champions League titles.

Dhoni is known for his street smartness, proactive and calm and composed nature, ability to effortlessly groom youngsters and change plans as per situations and opposition while leading a side. His tactical acumen has been hailed by many over the years. Prior to IPL 2022, Dhoni gave up CSK captaincy as Ravindra Jadeja succeeded him. However, he was reappointed CSK skipper for the remainder of the season after eight games. Talking about his leadership abilities, former Indian cricketer Ajay Jadeja reserved high praise for the keeper-batter and lauded him.

“When Dhoni comes to the fore, it’s always a positive for the Chennai Super Kings. Earlier, it was the same case for India as well. He makes a difference. I am not saying that his captaincy won CSK the last game," Jadeja told Cricbuzz.

"It is not like Chennai have not lost matches under Dhoni. Players and captains come and go but a leader like Dhoni comes once in a lifetime. When he is in charge, he is something special. He has been doing this since 2007. If people haven’t understood in 15 years, what Dhoni the captain brings in, there is no point explaining anything to them,” Jadeja added.

Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh opened up on India's ICC title-drought since 2013. While Team India last lifted an ICC trophy in 2013 Champions Trophy, under MS Dhoni's leadership, they have come close in many following mega events only to fall short in the knockouts or finals.

Talking about India's 2019 ODI World Cup run, the Virat Kohli-led side were favourites for the marquee event in England and Wales. While they topped the round-robin stage, they were eliminated in the semi-finals with an 18-run defeat at the hands of eventual runners-up New Zealand. In the last year's T20 World Cup, Kohli & Co. never found any momentum in their opening two games and despite winning their last three clashes, India bowed out of the tournament in the Super 12 round.

Dwelling on last edition of the T20 WC, Yuvi opined, "Our middle-order (batsmen) in T20 bats higher in franchise cricket. That is where we lacked in the last T20 World Cup."

Sanju Samson has come a long way. While he hasn't taken international cricket by a storm as yet, there is no doubting his talent and overall skills at the highest level. Even in the IPL, the 27-year-old Samson has made a mark and is Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper after being consistent in their line-up for years.

However, just like every other cricketer or sports personality, Samson's early days weren't smooth as well. He went through his fair share of struggles and his family also faced quite a few hurdles. Recalling an incident on how his parents tolerated insults from people, Samson told Gaurav Kapoor on Breakfast with Champions, "My father and mother used to pick my kit bag, which was very heavy. to the bus stand. There used to be noise from behind "Oye Sachin aur uske papa bhi jaa rahe hai bhai, ye banega Tendulkar?" (Oh look, Sachin and his father are also going. Will he become Tendulkar?) So he has also tolerated a lot of taunts."

"But they and mainly my brother were confident that I would play for India. My brother told me that it was his superstition to not tell me that I would play for India but he always knew from within that I was capable," added Samson.

"Never before or after, have I batted the way I did on those two days. I'd hit a shot and a voice from behind would come - 'What a shot'. 'Shot Sanju'! That kept pumping me up. It was magical, very special," he said.

Talking about the hilarious episode, Samson said that he was sent in at No. 3 on debut with Dravid being in the middle. "I never thought I would bat alongside Rahul Dravid. So my first game I played... I went one-down, Rahul Sir was opening. I knew they'd sent me to hit so I went and hit the first ball. I did something like that [shadow bats a shot on the leg side] and it went for a four.

"Rahul Sir came to me [while tapping on the surface] he said, 'Sanju take your time. Take a couple of balls and see what you can do. The next ball was a bouncer and I subconsciously pulled and it went for 4 runs. Sir came over and said, 'Keep going, keep going'," Samson added.

Samson has grown from strength to strength playing for the RR franchise. So far, he has amassed 3,366 runs in 131 IPL games -- while also representing the Delhi Daredevils (DD) in between -- at a strike rate of 135.73.

Talking about the Samson-led RR franchise, they are currently at the third position in the IPL 2022 points table, with six wins from ten games. They will be hoping to enter the playoffs and end their 14-year-long trophy drought.
