The Life of a Showgirl: Taylor Swift breaks her own record with album sales on first day of its release

It’s here! Taylor Swift dropped the first music video for her new single The Fate Of Ophelia from her new album The Life Of A Showgirl on Sunday. The song, though, was first available for viewing on Friday, October 3, as part of a movie theatre release party event for her album. According to reports, the video is full of references and Easter eggs for fans to uncover.

The music video — which Swift directed herself — sees the star serving several different looks. While some are elaborate get-ups inspired by her Showgirl era, others are inspired by various interpretations of Ophelia, a character in William Shakespeare's Hamlet.

Swift turns Ophelia

At one point, Swift wears an ethereal white gown as she lounges amid a backdrop that evokes John Everett Millais' famous painting Ophelia. Later in the video, she nods back to the art dressed in a sparkly dress and long, curly red wig. The first dress, though, calls to mind another painting of Ophelia done by Joseph Mordecai in the 1870s.

Swift then leaps from the painting set into more modern looks as she dances in a brunette wig and flapper-esque dress.

Eater eggs, Kelce reference

At one point in the video, she's on a pirate ship and falls off, only to emerge in a mid-century synchronised swimmer outfit, holding on to a raft. The symbolism of Swift's buoyancy — and the song's theme that fiancé Travis Kelce's love saved her from the "fate of Ophelia" — is another nod to Hamlet, as Ophelia's character famously drowns after descending into madness.

There are Easter eggs as well, including a shot of sourdough bread, a baking hobby the star has said she's "obsessed" with, and the singer catching a football, a nod to Kelce's role as a Kansas City Chiefs player.

Swift turns Ophelia At one point, Swift wears an ethereal white gown as she lounges amid a backdrop that evokes John Everett Millais' famous painting Ophelia. Eater eggs, Kelce reference At one point in the video, she's on a pirate ship and falls off, only to emerge in a mid-century synchronised swimmer outfit, holding on to a raft.

Taylor Swift on Friday quickly set a streaming record with "The Life of a Showgirl," her new album of bouncy pop songs about love, sex, success -- and score-settling -- that had fans analyzing every word. Critical opinion of "Showgirl" ranged from glowing to unimpressed, but fans flocked to Spotify to hear the 12 tracks, making it the most streamed album in one day in 2025 in less than 11 hours, the platform said. Swift reunited with Swedish hitmakers Max Martin and Shellback for her 12th studio album, and their influence is clear in the driving beats and catchy hooks. "I can't tell you how proud I am to share this with you, an album that just feels so right," the 35-year-old artist posted on Instagram. While the album still features plenty of introspection, it reveals a lighter, joyful Swift -- in love with her NFL Super Bowl champion fiance Travis Kelce, happy to have bought back her music catalog and proud of her record-shattering Eras Tour. "I just want you, have a couple kids, got the whole block looking like you... Got me dreaming about a driveway with a basketball hoop," she sings on the dreamy "Wish List." On "Opalite," which Kelce has said is his favorite track, she says, "You were dancing through the lightning strikes / Sleepless in the onyx night / But now the sky is opalite." "I used to have this dark fear that if I ever were truly, like, happy and...nurtured by a relationship -- what happens if the writing just dries up?" Swift told BBC Radio 1. "And it turns out that's not the case at all." Elated fans worldwide snapped up tickets to special "release party" screenings in movie theaters -- including the premiere of the video for lead single "The Fate of Ophelia." In Melbourne, Swifties -- many dressed in orange, the artist's signature color for the album -- were among the first to dance and sing to "Showgirl." "I love the album," Kerry Brookes, a 54-year-old British IT manager attending a screening in the suburbs of Washington, told AFP. "I'm just interested to see what she has to say about it," said Brookes, who was wearing a showgirl headpiece and a feather boa. - 'Only as hot as your last hit' - "Showgirl" represents a shift from the folksy pandemic-era "Folklore" and "Evermore" in 2020, the pensive "Midnights" in 2022 and the introspective "Tortured Poets" last year. Swift said ahead of the release that the new album "comes from the most infectiously joyful, wild, dramatic place I was in in my life." Some of that drama comes through on "Elizabeth Taylor," on which she sings: "You're only as hot as your last hit, baby." Then she goes for the jugular on "Father Figure," a reinvention of late pop crooner George Michael's hit of the same name in which she skewers power dynamics in the music business. She could be singling out Big Machine Records founder Scott Borchetta, who discovered Swift when she was a teen, and Scooter Braun, who bought the label and took control of the master recordings of her first six albums. "You want a fight, you found it / I've got the place surrounded / You'll be sleeping with the fishes before you know you're drowning," she sings. Fans are also musing that "Actually Romantic" is a diss track referring to a rumored feud with pop singer Charli XCX. "Showgirl" is available on streaming platforms. Special editions are for sale at retail giant Target, including the "Portofino orange glitter vinyl" or the "summertime spritz pink shimmer vinyl." Aside from the "Ophelia" video, the weekend screenings feature behind-the-scenes footage and lyric videos. The one-off cinematic event is estimated to gross $30-50 million, according to film industry website Deadline. "And now I know the life of a showgirl, babe," Swift sings in the title track featuring pop princess Sabrina Carpenter, who opened for her at some Eras Tour stops. "Wouldn't have it any other way."

Accompanying the album, movie theaters in dozens of countries will host special screenings from Friday through Sunday of a music video, a making-of featurette, personal commentary by Swift about her songs, and a karaoke-style singalong.

With the meticulously planned release of Taylor Swift's 12th album this Friday, the country singer-turned-pop star demonstrates again that she is as business savvy as she is musically adept. From hints dropped during her last tour in 2024 to movie screenings this coming weekend to accompany the new album's release, "Taylor Swift has perfected marketing as narrative art," said Robin Landa, a professor who studies advertising and branding at Kean University. "She doesn't simply release an album -- she orchestrates a cultural phenomenon." The massively hyped "The Life of a Showgirl" album was inspired by Swift's experiences during her record-breaking "Eras" concert tour, which coincided with the singer's romance with her now-fiance Travis Kelce, a three-time Super Bowl champion football star. The 12-track record "comes from the most infectiously joyful, wild, dramatic place I was in in my life -- and so that effervescence has come through," Swift herself promises. That appears to signal a return to pop after her darker 11th album, "The Tortured Poets Department," last year. Swift, 35, has said to expect "bangers" -- high-energy, dance-friendly songs -- in the ilk of her fan-favorite "22" and "Shake It Off," and created with the same Swedish production duo, Max Martin and Shellback. To call "The Life of a Showgirl," which features a duet with rising pop star Sabrina Carpenter, eagerly anticipated is an understatement. The album is the most pre-saved album ever on the Spotify streaming platform, breaking the record set last year by Swift's last album. - 'Ownership' - Accompanying the album, movie theaters in dozens of countries will host special screenings from Friday through Sunday of a music video, a making-of featurette, personal commentary by Swift about her songs, and a karaoke-style singalong. The one-off movie event is estimated to gross between $30 million and $50 million, according to film industry website Deadline. Swift, who first announced the album on Kelce's popular podcast last month, is "really taking ownership of the whole process, in every aspect of her music and her presentation to the public," said Toby Koenigsberg, a music professor at the University of Oregon.

Unlike modern diamonds, the old ones were cut by hand. Often called an old mine cut, this diamond cut was popular from the early 1700s to the late 1800s. They originated in India’s and Brazil’s historic diamond mines during the 1700s. Back then, the old mines were the primary sources of diamonds. India’s Golconda mines, in present-day Andhra Pradesh, were the first major source of diamonds for centuries. Historic gems like the Koh-i-Noor and the Hope Diamond came from this region. After India, Brazil became the diamond hub.

The cut became especially popular in the Victorian era.

Why is the diamond so unique?

The diamonds are hand-cut, meaning that each stone is cut by hand, using no machines. So no two diamonds are the same. This means that there is no ring like Taylor’s in the entire world. Wow!

Donald Trump has made a surprise U-turn on Taylor Swift, calling her a "terrific person" after months of bashing the singer over her support for Kamala Harris in the 2024 election.
