Friday (November 04) saw a doubleheader in the T20 World Cup as New Zealand faced Ireland whereas Australia locked horns with Afghanistan at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide. While New Zealand have confirmed a slot in the semi-finals, Australia survived a massive scare versus a spirited Mohammad Nabi-led Afghan line-up to finally emerge on top by four runs. The Kane Williamson-led Black Caps achieved an easy win, by 35 runs, over the Irish camp but Afghanistan challenged Aaron Finch-less Australia before Matthew Wade & Co. held their nerves to win and stay alive in the competition.

During the Afghanistan-Australia clash, a massive umpiring blunder went unnoticed. After Nabi & Co. opted to bowl first, Naveen-Ul-Haq bowled a five-ball over. However, none of the umpires took note of the mistake and proceedings continued uninterrupted. The incident took place during the fourth over. The incomplete over conceded nine runs. Many umpiring decisions have raised eyebrows in the ongoing edition but this howler certainly tops the list. Talking about the umpiring blunder, it would have become a bigger news had Australia lost the thrilling clash. Had it occurred during Afghanistan's run-chase, it would have made heads turn as well. Nonetheless, it is definitely a big miss from the on-field umpires especially given how every ball matters in any game.

Aus vs Afg, T20 WC: Umpiring howler noticed as Naveen-Ul-Haq bowls 5-ball over in Adelaide thriller

On Friday (November 04), we finally got one semi-finalists as New Zealand confirmed a place in the top four. Beating Ireland by 35 runs in the first game of the day, at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide, Kane Williamson-led Kiwis were confirmed of a semi-final spot after Australia were asked to bat first in the following encounter, versus Afghansitan, and they posted below 185, assuring NZ of a top-spot finish. Talking about the first game, Black Caps were asked to bat first and rode on Finn Allen's rapis start and Williamson's impressive 61 to post a challenging 185 for 6. In reply, Ireland started well before being restricted for 150 for 9.

Talking about the second game of the day, Aaron Finch-less Australia were invited to bat first by Mohammad Nabi-led Afghan line-up, at the same venue. After a good start from David Warner and Mitchell Marsh, Australia rode on Glenn Maxwell's 32-ball 54 to post a competitive 168 for 8. In reply, Nabi & Co. fought hard, courtesy of Gulbadin Naib's 23-ball 39 and Rashid Khan's gutsy 23-ball 48*, but managed 164-7; losing by four runs. Thus, Australia breathe another day in the showpiece event and will now hope for Sri Lanka to beat England, on Saturday (November 05), to become the second and final team from group 1 to enter the semis.

Team management, selectors & I were not on same page: Mohammad Nabi resigns as Afghanistan captain

Team India locked horns with Bangladesh in a crucial Super 12 clash in the T20 World Cup 2022 edition on Wednesday (November 02). In a rain-marred close encounter, Rohit Sharma & Co. emerged on top by five runs (DLS method) as the Bangla Tigers put up a spirited fight. Being asked to bat first, in Adelaide, Rohit-led India posted 184 for 6 riding on half-centuries from KL Rahul (50) and Virat Kohli (64 not out). In reply, Litton Das started off with a bang and took his side to 66 for no loss in seven overs before a brief rain break led to a revised target; with Bangladesh needing 151 in 16 overs (i.e. 85 off the last 54 balls).

Despite having the momentum before the rain break, and the wet outfield being a disadvantage for India, Bangladesh eventually managed only 145 for 6 to lose by five runs. The match went down to the wire and made heads turn for plenty of reasons. There was an accusation by Bangladesḥ, where they claimed Kohli pulled off a fake fielding act whereas some eyebrows were raised as to why the game resumed despite wet outfield. In this regard, former Pakistan captain and all-rounder Shahid Afridi made a bizarre remark.

"You saw the ground how wet it was. But ICC is inclined towards India. They want to ensure India reaches the semi-finals at any cost. The umpires were also the same who officiated India vs Pakistan & will get the best umpire awards," said Afridi to SAMAA TV.

ICC want to ensure India reach T20 World Cup semi-finals at any cost: Shahid Afridi makes glaring remark

On Friday (November 04), New Zealand defeated Ireland by 35 runs and have strengthened their chances of progressing into the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2022 edition in Australia. Locking horns with the Irish line-up in their last league stage match, after a defeat at the hands of England, Kane Williamsno & Co. produced a fine performance to topple the Andy Balbirnie-led Ireland camp and take a big step towards qualifying to the semi-finals. With this win, NZ now have ended the Super 12 round with seven points. While Australia, who now play Afghanistan, and England (to meet Sri Lanka tomorrow) can equal them but it will take a lot out of them to go past the Black Caps in terms of Net Run Rate (NRR).

Opting to bowl first, Ireland bowlers didn't start well as Finn Allen and Devon Conway posted a 52-run first-wicket stand in less than six overs. Allen made an 18-ball 32 whereas Conway returned for 28, Williamson upped the ante -- an area where he has struggled in this tournament so far -- and got some support from Glenn Phillips (9-ball 17) and Daryl Mitchell (21-ball 31*) to post a challenging 185 for 6 at the picturesque Adelaide Oval, Adelaide. From Ireland's perspective, Joshua Little claimed a hat-trick in the 19th over and became the sixth bowler, overall, to achieve this feat in T20 WC history (second Irishman).

In reply, Ireland openers -- captain Balbirnie and Paul Stirling -- started off on a positive note but post their departures, the middle and lower order couldn't do much as NZ bowlers chipped in with regular breakthroughs. Lockie Ferguson returned with 3 for 22 whereas the likes of Tim Southee, Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi ended with two wickets apiece. George Dockrell's late hits (15-ball 23) managed to take his side to 150 for 9 in 20 overs as Kiwis won comfortably by 35 runs.

The 2021 runners-ups have done enough to top Group 1. Nonetheless, they will keep an eye on Australia-Afghanistan and England-Sri Lanka even though they have NRR in their favour (+2.113).

WHAT THEY SAID

Kane Williamson | Winning captain and Player-of-the-Match: The ball held on the surface a little bit, I think the guys at the top were brilliant to give us the start and help us build the momentum. Then I think the spinners bowled brilliantly to get us the win. I was just trying to build some partnerships and contribute, happy to time a few balls as well today but it was a real team effort. They (Ireland) played some amazing cricket, played some challenging cricket and we had to adapt well, which I thought we did. The ball was stopping on the surface, the openers made a great start and the rest of the batters adjusted well to the conditions, especially against spin. I wanted to take my options, work on partnerships, speak with the batters about things to do going forward. We had to wait until the 9-over mark to get our first wicket. We needed to adjust our lines, bowl a bit slower and I thought the bowlers did so beautifully.

We bowled well right through the tournament, the fielding was a bit off. (Coming to today) It was nice to set-up a platform - that has been a trend in this tournament, but we needed someone to kick on from there. We're quite happy with what we achieved (in the tournament), compared to where we were in the last 12 months, we have improved a lot, especially against good teams and we are looking forward to meeting these sides once again. (On Josh Little) He's a class operator and showed it today

T20 World Cup 2022: NZ beat Ireland by 35 runs in Adelaide, take big step towards progressing to SFs

India and Bangladesh were involved in a close battle in a crucial Super 12 clash in the T20 World Cup at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide on Wednesday (November 02). Being asked to bat first, Rohit Sharma-led India posted 184 for 6 thanks to KL Rahul's 50 and Virat Kohli's unbeaten 66. In reply, Bangladesh opener Litton Das hammered the Indian bowlers to all parts of the ground and took his side to 66 for no loss in seven overs before a rain break.

After play resumed, the revised target was 151 in 16 overs with the Bangla Tigers still ahead courtesy of Litton's presence. Nonetheless, he was sent back by a bullet throw from Rahul, from deep mid-wicket, in the 8th over as the momentum shifted in India's favour.

KL Rahul's splendid throw sends Litton Das back to the pavillion in IND-BAN T20 WC tie - Watch

On Wednesday (November 02), India beat Bangladesh in a crucial Super 12 clash in the T20 World Cup 2022 edition. The two Asian teams locked horns at the iconic Adelaide Oval, Adelaide where Shakib Al Hasan-led Bangla Tigers asked India to bat first.

After losing Rohit Sharma cheaply, KL Rahul's 50 and Virat Kohli's unbeaten 44-ball 64, laced with 8 fours and a six, took India to 184 for 6 in 20 overs. Bangladesh were off to a flier and were 66 for no loss after seven overs before rain halted play. When the match resumed, the revised target for Bangladesh was 151 in 16 overs with a well-set Litton Das. Litton was run out for a magnificent 27-ball 60, courtesy of Rahul's rapid throw from the deep, as India clawed their way back into the contest and won by five runs (DLS method).

While Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya were among wickets, Shami also played his part with the ball, the Indian fielders rose to the occasion post the rain break. Nonetheless, it was well setup by Kohli and he walked away with the Player-of-the-Match award.

At the post-match presentation, Rohit lauded Kohli and spoke at length regarding his solid form. He said, "In my opinion he was always there, it was a matter of few innings here and there, he got it in the Asia Cup. We never had any doubts and the way he has been batting in this World Cup has been tremendous and he is really doing it for us."

In the run-up to the T20 WC, Kohli was struggling for runs before he redeemed himself as the second-highest run-getter in the Asia Cup 2022 edition. Since then, he has looked at his fluent best and is looking in his elements in the ongoing T20 WC. He already has three half-centuries in four games and became the highest run-getter in the current edition during the Bangladesh tie.

As soon as I knew the WC is in Australia, I was grinning from ear to ear. Good cricketing shots will be the key here is what I know. Hitting through the line is what I do in every format. We never had any doubts: Rohit Sharma on Virat Kohli's batting heroics in T20 WC after India beat Bangladesh

Pakistan beat South Africa by 33 runs (DLS method) to remain alive in the race for the semi-finals in the T20 World Cup 2022 edition, on Thursday (November 03) at the SCG, Sydney. After opting to bat first, Babar Azam-led Men in Green were tottering at 43 for 4 before rapid half-centuries from Iftikhar Ahmed and all-rounder Shadab Khan took them to a daunting 185 for 9 in 20 overs. In reply, SA were never in the hunt and the Temba Bavuma-led Proteas only managed a paltry 108 for 9 after rain-break led to a revised target of 142 in 14 overs.

Shaheen Afridi's three-fer and twin strikes from Shadab (2 for 16) led Pakistan to an easy win as they remain alive in the competition. At the post-match presentation, Babar said, "Very happy the way team performed. We are not upto the mark - me and Rizwan. But the way Haris played - different player - set the momentum. And the way Shadab and Ifti finished the innings - outstanding. To be honest, everyone is my best player. Everyone is my match-winner. First two losses cost us. But the way we have played last two matches. As you know cricket is funny game. You never know."

While Pakistan remain alive, they need to beat Bangladesh in their last encounter. On the other hand, Bangladesh are also in the hunt -- by the barest of margins -- and need a win at all costs along with other results also favouring them to progress ahead. For SA and India, they remain favourites to enter the semi-finals from Group 2 as they face lowly-ranked Netherlands and Zimbabwe, respectively, but the ongoing edition has given plenty of surprising results and, hence, no outcome can be ruled out completely.

EXPLAINED: How Pakistan's win can affect India's progress to the SFs

Pakistan's win has made India wait longer to earn a semi-final berth. For India, they still have fate in their own hands and only need a victory over the African nation, at the MCG, Melbourne, on Sunday (November 06), to progress ahead. SA will also qualify if they beat the Dutch line-up. Even a complete wash out in all remaining games will take the two through.

In case only India's game is abandoned due to rain, they will end with seven points and go through as SA and Pakistan, or even Bangladesh (with negative NRR), can only get to a maximum of 7 or 6 points respectively. If India lose, they will remain on six points and go through if SA win and Pakistan lose. If all India, SA and Pakistan lose, the former and Bangladesh will enter the semis. If India and SA lose but Pakistan win, then the Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue and their arch-rivals will reach the top four. India's only chance of elimination will be if Pakistan and they end on same points, below SA. Then, India will miss out due to inferior NRR.

India`s Suryakumar Yadav has grabbed the top position for batters in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Men's T20I Player Rankings after smashing two half-centuries over the past week in the Men's T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. ICC T20I Rankings: Suryakumar Yadav becomes No. 1 batter, ends Pakistan opener Md Rizwan's reign

The T20 World Cup 2022 edition is certainly not for the faint hearted. With each passing day, the race for the semi-finals gets complicated in the two groups. Talking about Group 2, it will see Pakistan locking horns with South Africa -- the only unbeaten side in the competition -- in a crucial Super 12 clash on Thursday (November 03).

A win for South Africa will all but confirm them a spot in the semi-finals, which they missed out on NRR in last year's edition. On the other hand, Pakistan remain alive by the barest of margins and a defeat will surely bring an end to their hopes of lifting the title for the second time, since 2009. Thus, both sides have all to play for in a battle which is expected to go down to the wire.

It is to be noted that the Proteas have never beaten Pakistan in this tournament. Their last face-off in the competition came in T20 WC 2012 in Sri Lanka. Will SA regain the top spot and book a place in the semis? Or, will Babar Azam & Co. breathe another day in the marquee event in Australia?

T20 WC 2022, Pakistan vs South Africa, Live Cricket Streaming: When and where to watch Super 12 tie?

During Pakistan's Netherlands face-off in the T20 World Cup 2022 edition, in Perth on October 30, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir made heads turn with his remark on Babar Azam. The Pakistan captain has been slammed left, right and centre following the Men in Green's dismal run so far in the competition.

When the one-time winners' playing XI didn't feature Fakhar Zaman, who is battling injury concerns in the run-up to the T20 WC, Babar was heavily criticised. Even when Fakhar was roped in for the clash versus the Dutch line-up, he batted at No. 3 whereas Pakistan continued to open with Babar and Md Rizwan, who have been criticised for their slow starts.

Thus, Gambhir slammed Babar and said during commentary of the Pakistan-Netherlands face-off, “In my opinion, first, you think about your team instead of yourself; if nothing goes according to your plan, you should have sent Fakhar Zaman up the batting order. This is called selfishness; as a captain, it is easy to be selfish."

Now, Gambhir's arch-rival Shahid Afridi has joined in and reacted to the former Indian opener's comments.
After all, he will head straight back home to India too),” Afridi said on Pakistani channel Samaa TV.

Afridi criticised Gambhir for his usage of words and further opined, "There is always criticism, but you need to be very careful with words. You should use words that should come as advice for the player, and you can make the people understand it as well. As far as Babar is concerned, he has given so many match-winning performances. The consistency with which he has scored, very few Pakistan batters have. He may not have risen to the expectations which is why he is facing some flak."

It will be interesting to see if Gambhir reacts to Afridi's comments. Babar-led Pakistan will play South Africa in a crucial Super 12 clash on Thursday (November 03) in Sydney.

In reply, Bangla Tigers were cruising towards a win, with two needed off the last three balls, before they lost the plot to be restricted to 145/9; losing by a run courtesy of Dhoni's famous run-out. So far, India and Bangladesh have faced each other thrice in the T20 WC. The one-time winners have won on all occasions. Will the script remain the same this time around as well? T20 WC 2022, India vs Bangladesh, live cricket streaming: When and where to watch crucial Super 12 tie?

After India's loss to South Africa in their Super 12 clash in the T20 World Cup, in Australia, a huge controversy broke out. A housekeeping staff member at the Crown in Perth shared a video of Virat Kohli's room and shared it on social media. This led the former Indian captain fuming and has prompted reactions from many in the cricketing fraternity.

In the run-up to India's face-off versus Bangladesh, at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide on Wednesday (November 02), former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar also joined in and shared his take on the matter, criticising the staff's behaviour.

"Definitely yes. Today, with these phone cameras, there is a very thin line between your privacy and where you are in the public domain. Sometimes you are sitting in the car as well, going to a match or maybe not going to a match, and when a camera is inside and trying to take you. Is that an invasion of privacy? I don't know," Gavaskar told India Today in an exclusive interview.

"But I think in your hotel room? Yes 100 percent, you need that privacy. Nobody should be doing what was done. I didn't see the video but I heard about it and I think it is simply not done," the Little Master added.

While resharing the video posted by the hotel staff, Kohli wrote on Instagram, "I understand that fans get very happy and excited seeing their favourite players and get excited to meet them and I’ve always appreciated that."

"But this video here is appalling and it’s made me feel very paranoid about my privacy. If I cannot have privacy in my own hotel room, then where can I really expect any personal space at all?? I’m NOT okay with this kind of fanaticism and absolute invasion of privacy. Please respect people’s privacy and not treat them as a commodity for entertainment," the 33-year-old added.

Following Kohli's revelation, the Crown Resorts, where the Indian team stayed in Perth, stated, "The safety and privacy of our guests is our number one priority, and we are incredibly disappointed this incident has occurred. We unreservedly apologise to the guest involved and will continue to take the necessary steps to ensure this remains an isolated incident."

"We have zero tolerance for this behaviour, and it falls well below the standards we set for our team members and contractors. Crown has taken immediate steps to rectify the issue. The individuals involved have been stood down and removed from the Crown account, and the original video was swiftly removed from the social media platform," it added.

"Crown is conducting an investigation with the third-party contractor and will take any further steps necessary to ensure an incident of this nature does not happen again. We are also co-operating with the Indian Cricket team and the International Cricket Council to convey our apologies and will continue to work with them as we progress the investigation," the statement added.

Pakistan find themselves at a precarious position in the T20 World Cup 2022 edition. After three encounters in the Super 12, the Men in Green have won just one game and lost two thrilling contests (including one against Zimbabwe).

Opening their campaign versus India, the Babar Azam-led side lost on the final ball whereas they fell short versus Zimbabwe as well, once again losing on the last delivery of a low-scoring thriller. With two more games to go, Pakistan need a miracle to qualify ahead. Amid their T20 WC woes, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir has slammed Babar and called him a selfish captain.

"In my opinion, first, you think about your team instead of yourself; if nothing goes according to your plan, you should have sent Fakhar Zaman up the batting order. This is called selfishness; as a captain, it is easy to be selfish. It is easy for Babar and Rizwan to open the innings for Pakistan and create so many records. If you want to be a leader, you have to think about your team," said Gambhir in commentary during the Pakistan-Netherlands game, which the former won by six wickets in pursuit of a paltry 92 on October 30 (Sunday) in Perth.

Pakistan didn't pick Fakhar Zaman for their opening two games and when they included him for the Dutch encounter, he batted at No. 3 with a struggling Babar still retaining his opening slot, with Md Rizwan. In the recent past, both Rizwan and Babar have been slammed for their low strike rate and similar playing styles, which many believe are hurting Pakistan's progress with the bat.

Afghanistan locked horns with Sri Lanka in a crucial Super 12 clash in Group A in the Men's T20 World Cup 2022 on Tuesday (November 01). Playing at The Gabba, Brisbane, the two Asian teams were in need of a win to keep their semi-final hopes alive but Dasun Shanaka-led Asian champions beat the Mohommad Nabi-led Afghan line-up by six wickets, with nine balls to spare.

Opting to bat first, the Afghan batters got starts but none of them stayed till the end or anchored the innings to take the team total beyond the 160-run mark. The likes of Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Usman Ghani, Ibrahim Zadran, Najibullah Zadran, and Gulbadin Naib got starts but none of them looked threatening enough. Captain Nabi tried to up the ante in the end overs and returned with an 8-ball 13 to take Afghanistan to a modest 144 for 8 in 20 overs.

From SL's perspective, spin-bowling all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga shined and returned with 3 for 13 whereas Kasun Rajitha and Lahiru Kumara ended with two wickets apiece. With a fine performance with the ball, Hasaranga is now at the top for most wickets in the ongoing edition (13).

In reply, the Lankan openers couldn't put up an impressive first-wicket stand as Pathum Nissanka fell early (10). Kusal Mendis (25) also followed suit as Afghanistan was alive in the contest with SL being 46 for 2 in 7.5 overs. Apart from the Afghan spinners Rashid (2 for 31) and Mujeeb Ur Rahman (2 for 24), none of the other bowlers chipped in with wickets as Dhananjaya de Silva batted with ease and helped the Islanders bring down the required run rate with a brisk 42-ball 66, at 157.14.

De Silva's fluent knock ensured no further hiccups for SL with Charith Asalanka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa getting starts as well. Eventually, SL eased past Afghanistan by chasing down the score in 18.3 overs with six wickets in hand.

With this loss, Afghanistan are out of the competition -- with two of their games being washed out. On the other hand, SL remain alive in the race for the semi-finals; adding pressure on England and Australia.

After Lungi Ngidi's 4 for 29, fifties from Aiden Markram (52) and David Miller (59 not out) propelled Temba Bavuma-led South Africa to a thrilling five-wicket win over India in a crucial Super 12 clash at the Men's T20 World Cup 2022 on Sunday (October 30) in Perth. Playing at the Perth Stadium, Rohit Sharma-led India opted to bat first and rode on Suryakumar Yadav's brilliant 44-ball 68 to post 133 for 9, after reeling at 60 for 5 in ten overs, but fell behind despite a fight from their bowlers.

The swashbuckling left-hander has been in sensational form in 2022, finishing run-chases in style on a consistent basis. Former Indian cricketer Ajay Jadeja lauded Miller and mentioned the MS Dhoni factor behind his rise as an able finisher.

Australia beat Ireland in their penultimate Super 12 clash in the Men's T20 World Cup 2022 edition, on Monday (October 31). Playing the Irish at The Gabba, Brisbane -- which hosted its first game in the ongoing edition -- Finch & Co. eased past the Andrew Balbirnie-led side by 42 runs and remain alive in the race for the semi-finals. However, a bigger win would've ensured a more healthy Net Run Rate (NRR) for the hosts and defending champions; a need of the hour for teams like Australia and England in Group A (which has been dominated by New Zealand).

Being asked to bat first, Australia weren't off to a great start as they lost David Warner for cheap (3). Finch, who has been struggling for runs, also didn't get off to a flier. Mitchell Marsh, at No. 3, returned for a 23-ball 28. Finch managed to up the ante during his crucial 70-run fourth-wicket stand with Marcus Stoinis (who scored a vital 25-ball 35) and returned with a 44-ball 63, laced with 5 fours and 3 sixes. He managed to hit some big shots -- off Mark Adair and George Dockrell -- before his departure. Late hits from Tim David and Matthew Wade took Aussies to a competitive 179-5.

In reply, Ireland were off to a promising start before they were reduced to 25 for 5 after being 18 for no loss. Two wickets apiece from Pat Cummins, Glenn Maxwell, Adam Zampa and Mitchell Starc dented Ireland's chase as they were bundled out for 139 in 18.1 overs. Lorcan Tucker's entertaining 48-ball 71 was the only shining aspect for Ireland during their run-chase. His inning prevented the hosts from attaining a more comprehensive victory, which could've bolstered their NRR further (had they won by 75 runs, or more, it would've taken them above England) as Group A continues to be congested with many contenders for the second spot (given NZ already have a one foot in the semi-finals).

What they said

Aaron Finch: It was a good performance. Getting 180 was a decent score on that wicket. We knew we had to lay the foundation early and couldn't risk being 4-5 down. Just a little bit of hammy tightness, he (Tim David) sat out as a precaution. It is nice when it works like that (not opening with Starc), doesn't always work but there's a lot of time and planning that goes into it, sometimes you look great and sometimes you look stupid, you take the good with the bad in this format. It would have been nice, having them 5 for 25 to really push that forward, Tucker played a helluva knock there.

Andrew Balbirnie: It was hardly fought. The first innings got away, we bowled well but a couple of overs didn't go our way and certainly didn't get the start with the bat, but to show the fight at the end was nice. Looking at the scoreboard we thought it wasn't against us, again the wickets column was a problem and who knows if someone had stayed with Tucker. He has had a really good World Cup and these wickets here suit him.

T20 WC: Australia ease past Ireland, miss out on golden chance to improve NRR as race for semis intensifies

India lost to South Africa by five wickets in their third Super 12 clash at the Men's T20 World Cup on Sunday (October 30) at the Perth Stadium, Perth. Batting first, India managed only a paltry 133-9 riding on Suryakumar Yadav's 40-ball 68. In reply, SA were 40-3 in ten overs before fifties from Aiden Markram and David Miller lead their side to a win in 19.4 overs as they now occupy the top spot in their group. After the loss, many pointed fingers at Rohit Sharma for choosing R Ashwin to bowl the 18th over, with SA still in need of 25 off the final 18 balls. While Ashwin removed Tristan Stobbs, he conceded two sixes to bring down the equation in favour of the Proteas.

Many thought Hitman had irked with his tactics by not giving the ball to Md Shami or Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the 18th over (with both pacers left with an over each). At the post-match presentation, Rohit explained the thought process behind his move and said, "I've seen what happens with the spinners in the last over, so I wanted to go the other way. If I can finish Ash, I just wanted to make sure that the seamers are bowling the right overs. You have to use it at some point. With the new batter, it was the perfect time for him to bowl. Miller played some good shots as well."

T20 WC: Rohit Sharma explains thought process behind giving the ball to R Ashwin in 18th over vs SA

Team India conceded their first game in the Men's T20 World Cup 2022 edition, losing to South Africa by five wickets at the Perth Stadium, Perth on Sunday (October 30). Batting first on a spicy wicket, Rohit Sharma-led India never got going and were reduced to 49 for 5 in no time before Suryakumar Yadav's gutsy and entertaining 40-ball 68 propelled India to 133-9 in 20 overs. In reply, SA were tottering at 40-3 at the halfway stage before the fifties from Aiden Markram (52) and David Miller (59 not out) took their side home in the last over. With the win, the Temba Bavuma-led Proteas now occupy the top spot in Group B.

Talking about India, the one-time winners' campaign is still on track and they very much remain in the race to seal a semi-final spot. Given India started their campaign with two back-to-back wins, they have four points from three games and will now face Bangladesh (November 02) and Zimbabwe (November 6) in their last two group stage encounters. After the defeat to South Africa, India is likely to end in the second spot and qualify for the last four.

While anything can happen in the remaining matches at the T20 WC, there are quite a few incredible patterns for Team India which indicate that they might have the final laugh at the ICC event in Australia. Here's a look at such factors which point out that it might be Rohit & Co.'s T20 WC:

1) The last time India successfully defended a score versus Australia in a warm-up game prior to the World Cup was in 2011. Ahead of the 2011 ODI WC, MS Dhoni's India dismissed Australia for a paltry 176 after posting 214, at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. In the run-up to the T20 WC 2022 Down Under, the Men in Blue did the same by defending a competitive score, 186 for 7, by six runs. Will 2011 heroics repeat this time around?

2) Ireland defeated England in the group stage of the T20 WC 2022 edition on October 26, at the MCG, Melbourne. The last time the Irish side defeated the Three Lions in a World Cup was in 2011. Well, we all know which side walked away with the mega title.

3) The last time SA defeated India in an ICC event came in the 2011 ODI WC. Back then, the Proteas defeated India with two balls to spare. On Sunday (October 30), Bavuma & Co. also won in 19.4 overs.

4) The last time India faced the Netherlands in an ICC event was also in 2011. Before that, they had faced them during the 2003 edition of the 50-over World Cup. So, whenever India have faced the Dutch line-up, they have reached the finals; winning the championship in the last instance.

We knew that there'll be a lot of help for the seamers, that's why it wasn't an easy target to chase. We fell a little short with the bat. We fought well, but South Africa were better today. When you see that score (40/3 in 10), you'll always think you're in the game. That was a match-winning partnership from Markram and Miller. We were a little poor in the field, we gave so many chances and we weren't clinical. We were just not good enough."

Four incredible patterns that suggest India might lift the T20 World Cup 2022 trophy

After losing to India on the last ball of their Super 12 opener, Pakistan went down to Zimbabwe as well during the T20 World Cup 2022 on Thursday (October 27) at the Perth Stadium, Perth. Opting to bat first, Craig Ervine-led Zimbabwe posted a modest 130-8, with Md Wasim Jr returning with 4 for 24, and had their back against the wall with Pakistan needing only 43 more off the last 39 balls, with seven wickets in hand.

However, Sikandar Raza (3 for 25) and Brad Evans (2 for 25) brought the African side back into the contest and led them to a famous one-run win on the last ball of the contest. Eventually, Pakistan managed only 129 for 8 despite needing only 3 off the last three deliveries. There was no shortage of drama in a pulsating clash which left the Babar Azam-led Pakistani dressing room in disbelief and shock. Here's how the Men in Green dugout reacted to their shocking loss:

The rain had the final say in the doubleheaders at the Men's T20 World Cup on Friday (October 28). After the Ireland-Afghanistan clash was washed out due to rain, in Group A, the Australia-England face-off also met with the same fate.

The T20 WC has lived up to expectations so far. However, rain has forced many games to be washed out in the main draw of the competition. Earlier in Group A, the New Zealand-Afghanistan match was also abandoned without a ball being bowled. Friday's doubleheaders, at the MCG, Melbourne, didn't even see the coin toss taking place.

Following a no-show on Friday, Group A continues to be wide open. At present, New Zealand occupies the top spot whereas England, Ireland, and Australia follow suit with an equal number of points (three each). Sri Lanka and Afghanistan are at the bottom slots, respectively, with two points apiece. Here's how England, and Australia can enter the semi-finals despite rain forcing their face-off to be washed out in Melbourne:

While NZ is at the top at the moment, SL have a realistic chance of progressing ahead, Ireland can make the top four only if they win the remainder of the games whereas Afghanistan is almost out. For England and Australia, the 2010 winners need to win both their remaining games as their NRR is a saving grace as of now (+0.239 ). For the hosts and defending champions to qualify, they have to win big versus both Ireland and Afghanistan. While that is possible by all means, Australia will qualify straightaway if England, Ireland and Sri Lanka lose one more clash. SL is their biggest threat currently, assuming NZ are strong contenders to top the group, which has one more game to play than the two European nations.

Even if Australia can better their NRR as compared to England and Ireland, they will hope and pray for the Lankans to concede at least one game (out of the three).

At the post-match presentation, Babar said, "We would have taken 130 at the halfway stage. Very disappointing performance, we are not up to the mark in batting. We have good batters but both openers got out in the powerplay. When Shadab and Shan were building a partnership, unfortunately, Shadab got out and then back-to-back wickets that pushed us into a pressure situation. First 6 overs, we haven't used the new ball well but we finished well with the ball. We will sit out, discuss our mistakes and we will train hard and come back strong in our next game." With two back-to-back defeats, Pakistan need to revamp its campaign at the earliest as they are starring on the brink of an early exit.
