Suryakumar was able to reach the illusive milestone thanks to another brilliant half-century against Zimbabwe on Sunday. The in-form batsman took just 25 balls to slam 61 runs against the hapless Zimbabwe bowlers and in the process, took India to a big total of 185 for the loss of five wickets.

Overall, he became the second batsman ever to score more than 1000 runs in a calendar year when it comes to the shortest format of the game. The first person to achieve the feat was Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan who scored an impressive 1326 runs in 2021.

The innings on Sunday was filled with exciting shots as Suryakumar Yadav ended with four sixes and six fours. With India losing wickets at regular intervals, a score beyond 160 looked difficult but with a strike rate of 244, he made it look easy with partnerships with Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel.

The Indian batter is just 65 runs away from joining Pakistan's Mohammad Rizwan in an elite list of batters with 1,000 runs in a calendar year in T20Is. Rizwan, who amassed 1326 runs in 29 matches last year, is the only batter in the world at present to have scored over 1,000 runs in a calendar year in the shortest format.

Suryakumar currently has 935 runs to his name in 26 matches this year and is just 65 runs short of becoming the second batter after Rizwan to complete 1,000 runs in T20Is in a calendar year. He has been averaging 42.50 in T20Is this year and has stuck at a brilliant 183.69.

He has so far managed 134 runs in three matches in the ongoing T20 World Cup and is India's second-highest run-getter behind Kohli in the tournament so far.

ICC T20I Rankings: Suryakumar Yadav becomes No. 1 batter, ends Pakistan opener Md Rizwan's reign

David Miller and Aiden Markram combined to steer South Africa home in a tricky run-chase as the Proteas defeated India by five wickets in the T20 World Cup 2022 on Sunday (October 28). It was a low-scoring thriller between the two sides in Perth as South Africa managed to come out on top after holding their nerves towards the end.

After an excellent effort with the ball to stop India on&nbsp;a paltry 133, South Africa found themselves in troubled waters early in their run chase as Indian bowlers gave the Proteas a taste of their own medicine with the ball.

Arshdeep Singh continued his fine form with the new ball as he struck twice in his very first over to get rid of Quinton de Kock on just one off 3 balls and Rilee Rossouw on a duck.

South African skipper Temba Bavuma too couldn't trouble the scorers much and departed for just 10 off 15 balls as his men were left reeling on 24/3 inside the Powerplay. However, Markram and Miller combined to post a match-winning 76-run stand for the fourth wicket as they helped South Africa stage a comeback in the contest.

While Markram took charge in the middle overs after the run rate started slipping away from South Africa's reach, it was Miller, who finished off the proceedings in style after his dismissal. Markram slammed a crucial 52 off 41 deliveries while Miller played an important knock of unbeaten 59 to steer his team over the line.

ICC T20I Rankings: Suryakumar surpasses Babar Azam, Hardik gains big after Mohali blitz vs Australia

Australia produced a fine batting show to beat hosts India by four wickets in the first T20I here on Tuesday. 
Invited to bat, Hardik Pandya (71 not out) and KL Rahul (55) scored scintillating half-centuries to help India post 208 for six. In reply, opener Cameron Green put India on the back foot with his 30-ball 61 before Matthew Wade (45 not out off 21) took the visitors over the line with four balls to spare.

With the win, Australia took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Earlier, Rahul (55 off 35 balls) scored his second consecutive fifty which included four boundaries and three maximums. BCCI announced India's 15-man squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 edition on Monday evening (September 12). As expected, the main squad comprises all the big guns who featured in the Asia Cup but also saw the return of premier pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel.

In the reserve list, Md Shami, Deepak Chahar, Shreyas Iyer and Ravi Bishnoi were named. Former Indian captain and chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar opened up on India's squad for the showpiece event, in Australia from October-November, and named the star player who can be Men in Blue's finisher. While the squad features some known finishers such as Hardik Pandya, Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant, Vengsarkar feels Suryakumar Yadav can do the tough job at the forthcoming ICC event.

"I can’t really comment on who bats at what number. It is up to the think tank, the coach, the captain and the vice-captain. But I feel Suryakumar Yadav, who is batting at 4, can bat at 5 as well. He can be a great finisher," Vengsarkar was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

"T20 is not like ODIs and Test cricket, where you need certain batters at certain positions. In this format, anybody can bat anywhere. You don’t have time to settle down. One should go after the bowlers from ball one," he opined.

SKY ended the Asia Cup with 139 runs -- eighth-highest overall&nbsp;and second-most among Indians -- including a breathtaking 26-ball 68 not out versus Hong Kong.

The 1983 World Cup-winning member Vengsarkar also mentioned the three players he would've picked had he been part of the&nbsp;current selection committee. "I would have picked Mohammed Shami, Umran Malik and Shubman Gill for the T20 World Cup. Would have given them a long run in T20Is because they all had a brilliant IPL season," he added.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday (September 12) announced India's 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup 2022. There are no major surprises in the squad as fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel have returned after recovering well from their respective injuries.

The BCCI selection committee met on Monday afternoon to pick the squad after India's disappointing campaign in the recently-concluded Asia Cup 2022 where the team failed to make it to the final. India's bowling woes were left exposed in the tournament and the pace attack has been strengthened for the World Cup with the return of Bumrah and Harshal.

Both the pacers had missed the bus for Asia Cup after suffering injuries. They have now fully recovered and have been undergoing training at the National Cricket&nbsp; Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. Bumrah and Harshal will spearhead India's pace battery alongside the experienced Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Arshdeep Singh.

Senior pacer Mohammed Shami was believed to be in contention to make a comeback in the T20 squad after a dismal show from Indian pacers in the Asia Cup. However, he has been selected as one of the standby players alongside Deepak Chahar and young spinner Ravi Bishnoi, who was part of India's Asia Cup squad.

In the absence of star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who failed to make the cut after undergoing knee surgery recently, Axar Patel has been roped in as a like-to-like replacement. Hardik Pandya remains India's first-choice all-rounder while Deepak Hooda will also be expected to chip in with the ball when required.

There are no major changes in the batting line-up from the squad that was picked for the Asia Cup. The likes of Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan and others have also missed out as the selectors have retained the top four of&nbsp;Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli and&nbsp;Suryakumar Yadav along with Pandya and Hooda in the middle.

Both Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik have made the cut as expected. While Pant is likely to be the first-choice wicket-keeper, Karthik might have made the cut as a specialist finisher based on his current form. India have kept Shreyas Iyer in the reserves as a backup in case of injuries.
