<p>Bollywood is going back to basics. With each theatrical release hitting the bull's eye at the box office, makers are sticking to formula films. It comes at a time when OTT-infested space is narrating bold, realistic content but when it comes to the big ticket screen outings, Hindi cinema seems to rely on the tried and tested formula. Two weeks back <em>Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani </em>brought back quintessential Bollywood family drama to the big screen and this week Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel return with period action-drama <em>Gadar 2</em>. A sequel to the 2001 blockbuster film <em>Gadar: Ek Prem Katha,</em> the Anil Sharma directorial has a similar setting, with Deol presented in a superhero avatar. Back then the film had the India-Pakistan partition as the backdrop, 22 years on the sequel has the Indo-Pak 1971 war as the backdrop. High on theatrics, action, melodrama, and anti-Pakistan sentiments, <em>Gadar 2 </em>serves Deol in a larger-than-life avatar and very nicely connects the first part of the film with the sequel, making for a very engaging masala action thriller.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The setup remains the same. Tara Singh (Deol) owns a fleet of trucks (and drives one) and delivers goods on a regular basis to the Indian Army cantonment in Pathankot. Married to Sakeena (Patel), their son Jeete (Utkarsh Sharma) is now a college-going kid. It is 1971 and India and Pakistan are on the brink of war. Tara is asked to provide a fleet of trucks to a border area with ammunition by General Rawat. On the said day, firing between the Indian and Pakistani armies leads to Tara and some of his drivers getting involved in cross-firing. Hours later Tara along with a few soldiers and drivers are reported missing. His family is eventually informed that they have been held captive at a prison in Islamabad.&nbsp;<br />

Anxious about how his father is and unable to see his mother's misery, Jeete decides to enter Pakistan illegally in order to get Tara back. Once he is there Jeete realizes Tara never got captured by the army and instead had fallen off a cliff. Meanwhile, Tara returns home only to find his son gone. Seventeen&nbsp;years after he had created a mini-riot in Pakistan in order to bring his wife back, Tara returns to Pakistan this time to bring his son back.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Writer Shaktimaan Talwar, <em>Gadar 2</em> story remains the same and much like the first part plays to the gallery. In 2001, the fabric of India was different and jingoism was not so much the norm. Twenty-two years on, harping one's love for the country has become a habit and it mostly works for the larger audience.<em> Gadar 2</em>, in that sense, manages to stick to the same framework and has plenty of anti-Pakistan moments. Many would recall Deol's powerful dialogues on how it was due to India that Pakistan existed back in the first film. In the second part, Deol pelts out similar dialogues on Pakistan. A confrontation scene between Pakistan General Hamid Iqbal (a Tara hater) and Tara Singh has the latter reminding him that if the majority of the population in Pakistan was given a choice to head back to their roots in India they would. And while Talwar creates a typical antagonist in the Pakistani General who hates India, Hindus and Tara with great passion, the writer also tries to mute the hatred. In Pakistan, while fleeing from the authorities, Jeete is often helped by random strangers who, even though are part of the enemy country, are not India haters.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Deol himself treads a careful path, never really bashing the Muslims, or Pakistan altogether but calling out what's wrong. Of course, he has ample lines that play to the gallery - from talking about India's greatness, (<em>Hindustan zindabad tha, hai aur hamesha rahega</em>) to how it belongs to every religion to reminding the enemy about Bangladesh and its creation-<em> Gadar 2 </em>rides high on nostalgia and jingoism.&nbsp;</p>

Since it features Deol as the alpha male, age is never considered. Back in the first film, he had famously uprooted a handpump and swung it around a mob, killing and injuring many. In the second part, the makers give a hat tip to the iconic scene which is bound to be hooted and cheered in theatres across. In <em>Gadar 2</em>, Deol also hurls a cannon at a crowd and beheads people with a single swig of a hammer similar to the one that Thor yields in Marvel films. Thor is God, Deol is superhuman but they are more or less the same people. Deol, in his 60s, is in fine form and carries the outlandish, melodramatic film on his shoulder very well. He has Utkarsh Sharma playing his onscreen son and sidekick who gets his moments to shine as well in the film with action sequences and <em>dialoguebaazi.</em> He is Anil Sharma's son and hence gets a substantial role after Deol.&nbsp;<br />

Ameesha Patel, meanwhile, remains restricted in her abilities to emote and is given limited screen time. She heaves and sighs, runs towards Deol at regular intervals and prays to a whole lot of gods.&nbsp;<br />

A word of praise for the music by Mithoon. The first part is to date remembered for its soulful music and this one should&nbsp;be appreciated too. Not only does the composer recreate the old classics like 'Main Nikla Gaddi Leke' and 'Uddja Kaale Kawa' but also creates newer tunes that are truly beautiful.&nbsp;<br />

Since the film involves a bunch of Muslim characters, the writers use Urdu occasionally just to reiterate the identity of the characters. Indians are referred to almost always as Kafirs for no rhyme or reason. The film also overall gives out a very old late 1990s and 2000s vibe. The women are very loudly dressed, and the sets are over the top much like the reactions. At 2 hours 50 minutes, the film is also very long. But Tara Singh alone makes the ride worthwhile.</p>

<p>Deol screams, shouts, flexes muscles, and grunts in regular intervals but somehow makes<em> Gadar 2 </em>engaging. Sure, I did find myself rolling my eyes on several occasions, but nevertheless enjoyed Deol saving the day with a hammer and a sidekick in tow. If you liked <em>Gadar: Ek Prem Katha</em>, you will like <em>Gadar 2 </em>as well.&nbsp;</p>

Before Gadar 2: Reflecting on the legacy and controversies of the original Gadar

<p>As they hope to recreate their onscreen magic with the second part of <em>Gadar,</em> Ameesha Patel and Sunny Deol were spotted at the Attari-Wagah border. Ahead of the release of their film,<em> Gadar 2,</em> a paparazzi account posted a clip of the actors.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the video, singer Udit Narayan is seen singing <em>Gadar: Ek Prem Katha</em> songs “Main Nikla Gaddi Leke” and “Ghar Aaja Pardesi”. Both Sunny and Ameesha Patel can be seen having a good time and enjoying themselves. The singer was seen wearing an olive green shirt with a matching jacket and pants.</p>

<p>Ameesha and Sunny were decked up in ethnic outfits. While Ameesha wore a blue suit, Sunny Deol was in a yellow kurta, white pyjamas and matched it with an olive green turban. Ameesha and Sunny's outfits channelled their characters in the film. The co-actors also performed bhangra after the Beating Retreat Ceremony.</p>

The film's teaser was revealed on Monday, which gives a glimpse of Sunny Deol in his character as Tara Singh.<br />

The teaser indicates that the film's second part takes place a few years after independence, where the original film was set. It's set in 1971 and a woman's voiceover declaring Tara Singh the ‘damaad of Pakistan’ (Pakistan's son-in-law).<br />

<p>Bankrolled by Anil Sharma Productions and Zee Studios, the film reportedly shifts the setting to the Indo-Pakistani war of 1971, in which India helped Bangladesh (called East Pakistan then) attain freedom from the clutches of Pakistan. The original was set in Punjab preceding and during the Partition of India in 1947 which caused an inconceivable amount of bloodshed between Hindus, Sikhs, and Muslims in mainly Punjab and Bengal regions.</p>

The corpses are found, in different cases, slashed as though by a coked-up wolverine, cut in half a railway track, and in one case, the major internal organs are removed. The killings appear to echo the metaphors used in the reviews.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The culprit does have one thing going for them. They are fair. They target those critics too who they believe are over-generous with their star ratings. <p>'Chup' is not really a murder mystery, which the trailers had led me to think. The film does not even try to hide the person who has acquired the status of bogeyman for the film critics. Or at least I think that is the case. That would have been fine by me. But the movie tries to cram too many ideas into its plot, which is way more than it can handle. It is, simultaneously, many things -- a tribute to Guru Dutt, a police procedural, a thriller, a meditation on the art of film criticism, and even a bit of a character study. In the end, it fails at being any of those. For instance, Arvind, despite Sunny really nailing the role that requires him to be more subtle than he likely wanted, comes across as something of a dunce for a high-ranking police officer (I am sure that wasn't the attention).&nbsp;</p>

Also, for an out-and-out psychopathic serial killer, the script goes too long a way into explaining why they became what they became -- the rough childhood, the abusive parent, the dead dog, and so. Oh, the poor thing. One character even says something like, "It's no surprise then they turned into a serial killer." It's not just off-putting, but also rather quotidian.</p>

<p>There are, of course, a lot of things to like here, which is why I said earlier that the movie is never boring even when it stumbles. The performances are excellent all around. Deol, Salmaan, and Dhanwanthary are all pretty great. Cinematographer Vishal Sinha, going along with the movie's throughline, makes Mumbai even more beautifully cinematic than it is during Monsoons. The visuals are quite lovely, and well-complemented by Aman Pant's score. The classic Hindi songs appear in the movie every now and then, and this reminded me of 'Bombay Rose', a stunning hand-animated feature that is, in my opinion, the finest tribute to Bollywood.&nbsp;</p>

<p>And finally, 'Chup' does succeed in bringing out the fraught relationship between filmmakers and critics. So, that's it. This film is largely watchable but is not as profound as it thinks it is.<br />

Actually, R Balki's slasher film 'Chup: Revenge Of The Artist' is equal parts interesting and equal parts scary.&nbsp;Entertaining because it's a refreshingly new story- which does a hat-tip to Guru Dutt and his last few films and manages to create an intriguing premise for the viewers. Scary because it has a psychopath killing film critics and giving them ratings based in their last review. i should probably word this article well, lest it is taken literally much like the film and my fate is decided accordingly.</p>

<p>In meta-esque 'Chup', R Balki writes a love letter to Hindi cinema and also highlights the love-hate relationship that makers share with film critics who with their writing and verdict can make it break a film and the hard work that goes behind making it.</p>

<p>Set in Mumbai, the film opens with a noted film critic found gruesomely murdered at his home. As investigative officer Arvind Mathur (Sunny Deol) sets out to figure out the motive behind the murder, two more film critics are killed. All have stars etched bloodily on their forehead. Meanwhile, a young entertainment reporter Nila Menon(Shreya Dhanwanthary) finds herself falling for her neighbourhood florist Danny(Dulquer Salmaan). Nila is passionate about cinema and aspires to be a film critic eventually. And while she finds herself drawn to the mysterious Danny, who seems to be clueless about films, the police approach her for help to nab the killer who Mathur is sure will strike again as he/she is a 'critic of the critics'</p>

<p>The killer can be anyone, the motive is unknown and even though the police narrow it down to an angry filmmaker or actor, or a producer, it's difficult to identify the exact person as the killer leaves no trace.</p>

<p>Written by Balki who has co-written the screenplay with Raja Sen(film critic himself) and Rishi Virmani, 'Chup' draws inspiration from Guru Dutt's last film- a failure called Kagaz Ke Phool' and 'Pyaasa' - another dud and uses it as a metaphor on several occasions. It also takes in instances from the cutthroat world of media where several reviewers are quick to pass judgment and are not always honest in order to get views or maximum clicks.</p>

<p>A good slasher film usually keeps the viewer hooked till the end. While 'Chup' manages to do just that, there isn't much of an element of surprise in the very linear narrative. Perhaps the build-up to the plot was such that I had hoped for some major twists. But in the second half, the film trudges toward the love story more and the slasher film becomes more of a drama. By the time of the climax, the film becomes quite predictable and you know how it will pan out.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Despite, a sluggish second half, 'Chup' is definitely worth a watch. Primarily for its cast, its camera work, and its unique story.&nbsp;</p>

Complementing him is Sherya Dhanwanthary, who after 'Scam 1992' has now aced the modern, big city journalist role. Shreya makes her Nila look almost like an extension of herself and is natural throughout.&nbsp;<br />

It is refreshing to watch Sunny Deol in a film after ages. Restrained but quick-witted, Deol's Arvind Mathur brings in a certain calmness to the eerie premise overall. There is also Pooja Bhatt in an extended cameo. The ensemble cast makes Chup a very interesting film to watch.&nbsp;<br />

The film also has amazing camera work by Vishal Sinha who captures Mumbai's Bandra area in all its glory. Poetic and sublime, 'Chup' elevates because of its beautiful shots of Mumbai. While Amit Trivedi and Sneha Khanwalkar provide beautiful tunes, it is the usage of SD Burman's beautiful songs in Guru Dutt's films that stand out. Classics like 'Jaane Kya Tune Kahi' and 'Dekhi Zamane Ki Yaari' are beautifully incorporated into the story.&nbsp;<br />

<p>He underwent treatment in Mumbai for a week and then had to fly to the US for further treatment. Due to his condition, the actor had to miss the Indian Presidential Election as he is also a Lok Sabha MP from Gurdaspur, Punjab.</p>

<p>To explain his absence, his spokesperson issued a statement: “Sunny Deol sustained a back injury a few weeks ago at shoot, he was undergoing treatment first in Mumbai and then he flew to USA for his back treatment two weeks back.”</p>

<p>“The presidential elections happened during this time and he was not in the country as his treatment is still not over. He should be returning to India post his recovery.”</p>

<p>Filmmaker Anil Sharma says his Partition-set drama 'Gadar: Ek Prem Katha', which completes 20 years on Tuesday, owes its origins to a subplot of a film on exodus of Kashmiri Pandits, which never got made. Starring Sunny Deol as Tara Singh, a Sikh who falls in love with a Pakistani Muslim girl, Sakina (Ameesha Patel), the film released on June 15, 2001 to a thunderous response.</p>

<p>What worked for the film were its crowd-pleasing dialogues, a chartbuster soundtrack by Uttam Singh and the movie's emotional hook- how Tara and Sakina's love story blooms against the unfortunate Hindu-Muslim riots during the Partition era. Sharma said the way 'Gadar'&nbsp;bulldozed all the obstacles that came its way -- from its emotionally-charged shoot to the historic box office face-off with Aamir Khan's 'Lagaan'&nbsp;-- felt unreal.</p>

<p>"Everyone makes films, but a movie like 'Gadar' can only be made with God's blessings and audience's love. The film stands tall even today and has a strong recall value. I count my blessings even today," Sharma said.</p>

<p>Sharma, who co-wrote the story with his frequent collaborator, writer Shaktiman Talwar, wanted to make a period film, something related to India-Pakistan Partition after a string of successful action films with veteran actor Dharmendra in 'Hukumat'&nbsp;(1987), 'Elaan-E-Jung'&nbsp;(1989) and 1991's 'Farishtay'.</p>

<p>Around 1997-98, the director was gearing up to make a multi-starrer film on the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits in early 1990s and had even worked with Talwar for close to 10 months on its script. The director had spoken to several top stars from the industry to feature in the film, all equally excited to start the shoot, when the director encountered a slight obstacle.</p>

<p>"In the film's second half, I needed a subplot about a Kashmiri boy from our side and a girl from the other side. It was a love story. Then Shaktiman ji narrated me a real story he had heard and it blew me away. I told him, 'let's pause the current film and flesh this idea out'. I felt it had to be made, without any delay."</p>

<p>The story which Talwar had narrated Sharma was that of a Sikh ex-soldier of the British Army, Boota Singh and his tragic cross-border love story. The filmmaker wanted a happy ending. "I wanted to treat it like Ramayana, how Ram goes to Lanka go get Sita back. Here, the son asks his father to get his mother back. It was an extremely strong emotional point, which is why the film worked. I knew it would become India's 'Titanic'," he said.</p>

What worked for the film were its crowd-pleasing dialogues, a chartbuster soundtrack by Uttam Singh and the movie's emotional hook- how Tara and Sakina's love story blooms against the unfortunate Hindu-Muslim riots during the Partition era. Sharma said the way 'Gadar' bulldozed all the obstacles that came its way -- from its emotionally-charged shoot to the historic box office face-off with Aamir Khan's 'Lagaan' -- felt unreal. "Everyone makes films, but a movie like 'Gadar' can only be made with God's blessings and audience's love. The film stands tall even today and has a strong recall value. I count my blessings even today," Sharma said. Around 1997-98, the director was gearing up to make a multi-starrer film on the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits in early 1990s and had even worked with Talwar for close to 10 months on its script. The director had spoken to several top stars from the industry to feature in the film, all equally excited to start the shoot, when the director encountered a slight obstacle. "In the film's second half, I needed a subplot about a Kashmiri boy from our side and a girl from the other side. It was a love story. Then Shaktiman ji narrated me a real story he had heard and it blew me away. I told him, 'let's pause the current film and flesh this idea out'. I felt it had to be made, without any delay." The story which Talwar had narrated Sharma was that of a Sikh ex-soldier of the British Army, Boota Singh and his tragic cross-border love story. The filmmaker wanted a happy ending. "I wanted to treat it like Ramayana, how Ram goes to Lanka go get Sita back. Here, the son asks his father to get his mother back. It was an extremely strong emotional point, which is why the film worked. I knew it would become India's 'Titanic'," he said. At least nine people have been killed and over 300 have been rushed to emergency services in the city.<br />

<p>Actor and Gurdaspur MP Sunny Deol failed to impress with his attendance record in the first session of the 17th Lok Sabha by not attending the house for 28 days.</p>

<p>According to Lok Sabha's attendance record, Deol attended parliament for five continuous days soon after the resumption of the monsoon session but then gave it a miss for the next whole week.</p>

<p>In total, the Gurdaspur lawmaker attended nine sittings of Parliament while giving a miss to Lok Sabha for 28 days out of a total of 37 days that the house functioned, including the extended session.</p>

<p>In his debut election, Deol had defeated sitting MP and Congress candidate Sunil Jakhar by 82,459 votes from Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat in Punjab.</p>

<p>He had joined the BJP on April 23, this year.</p>

<p>In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, BJP had won this seat after fielding actor Vinod Khanna.</p>

<p>After Khanna's demise in April 2017 by-polls were held and the seat went to Congress'&nbsp;Jakhar.</p>

<p>Deol is the third member of his family to join politics. Controversy being created out of nothing: Sunny Deol on appointing representative for Gurdaspur constituency 

<p>Film actor and Gurdaspur MP Sunny Deol has been asked to explain his poll expenditure during the recent Lok Sabha elections after it was found to have crossed the statutory limit of Rs 70 lakh, an official said on Wednesday.</p>

<p>The notice to Deol to "reconcile" his poll expenditure account was issued by Gurdaspur District Election Officer-cum-Deputy Commissioner Vipul Ujjwal.</p>

<p>"His poll expenditure was found to be more than Rs 70 lakh limit," said Ujjwal.</p>

<p>Deol was elected MP from Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat. He defeated Congress nominee Sunil Jakhar with a margin of 82,459 votes.</p>

<p>Though Ujjwal refused to comment on the election expenditure figure, official sources said as per preliminary calculations, Deol's poll expenditure was found to be Rs 86 lakh.</p>

<p>Ujjwal said the amount of Deol's poll expenditure was not a "final" figure.</p>

<p>"We have issued a notice to him (Deol) for reconciliation of accounts and the final figure of the poll expenditure will be known only after the reconciliation and settlement of the accounts," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It is too early to comment on the overspending right now," added Ujjwal.</p>

<p>For Lok Sabha candidates, the statutory poll expenditure limit has been fixed at Rs 70 lakh.</p>

<p>Deol's poll expenditure was found to be in excess of the limit among all other candidates in the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha constituency, officials said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The reconciliation of accounts is likely to continue till June 22 and 23.</p>

<p>Ujjwal further said after the elections, every candidate was issued notice for the reconciliation of their accounts.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It is a normal statutory notice," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier on May 15, the Election Commission had issued directions for adding Rs 1.74 lakh to Deol's poll expenditure after he failed to respond to its query about a Facebook page being run in his support.</p>

<p>The order had come on a complaint by the Punjab Congress, which claimed the Facebook page, 'Fans of Sunny Deol', was being run without any prior permission of the poll watchdog.</p>

The notice to Deol to "reconcile" his poll expenditure account was issued by Gurdaspur District Election Officer-cum-Deputy Commissioner Vipul Ujjwal. "His poll expenditure was found to be more than Rs 70 lakh limit," said Ujjwal. Deol was elected MP from Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat. He defeated Congress nominee Sunil Jakhar with a margin of 82,459 votes. Though Ujjwal refused to comment on the election expenditure figure, official sources said as per preliminary calculations, Deol's poll expenditure was found to be Rs 86 lakh. Ujjwal said the amount of Deol's poll expenditure was not a "final" figure. "We have issued a notice to him (Deol) for reconciliation of accounts and the final figure of the poll expenditure will be known only after the reconciliation and settlement of the accounts," he said. "It is too early to comment on the overspending right now," added Ujjwal. For Lok Sabha candidates, the statutory poll expenditure limit has been fixed at Rs 70 lakh. Deol's poll expenditure was found to be in excess of the limit among all other candidates in the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha constituency, officials said. The reconciliation of accounts is likely to continue till June 22 and 23. Ujjwal further said after the elections, every candidate was issued notice for the reconciliation of their accounts. "It is a normal statutory notice," he added. Earlier on May 15, the Election Commission had issued directions for adding Rs 1.74 lakh to Deol's poll expenditure after he failed to respond to its query about a Facebook page being run in his support. The order had come on a complaint by the Punjab Congress, which claimed the Facebook page, 'Fans of Sunny Deol', was being run without any prior permission of the poll watchdog.
