On the first day of action in Tokyo, Australia's Olympic team faced a setback, with a repentant Jamie Kermond testing positive for cocaine.&nbsp;

Australia's chef de mission at the 2020 Games, Ian Chesterman, said on Wednesday that the showjumper's membership of the team had been terminated after he had brought the game into notoriety.&nbsp;

Equestrian Australia also suspended Kermond on Wednesday morning.&nbsp;

“Equestrian Australia has provisionally suspended Jumping athlete Jamie Kermond under the Australian National Anti-Doping Policy 2021. The mandatory Provisional Suspension Notice asserts Mr. Kermond returned a positive A-sample for a metabolite of cocaine following a test conducted by Sport Integrity Australia on 26 June 2021."

"Mr. Kermond is prohibited from participating in any WADA compliant event, including the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, while the provisional suspension is in place," the statement read.

The Australian Olympic Committee said in a release: “The Australian Olympic Committee has been made aware of the provisional suspension of equestrian athlete Jamie Kermond after being informed by Sport&nbsp;Integrity Australia as an interested party. The Australian Olympic Team Selection Committee will consider the matter later today.”

Jamie Kermond was set to make his Olympics debut. Yet, his 'A' example returned positive for cocaine use, prompting his temporary suspension.&nbsp;

“It is likely that the positive result was from a single recreational use of the drug at a social event and had no connection with my sport of equestrian,” Kermond said in a statement.

“I am extremely upset and remorseful as to what has happened and I accept full responsibility. I am truly sorry as I have let a lot of people down including my family and teammates.

“Hopefully one day I can be forgiven for my mistake [and make] amends through better actions and continued contribution to the sport I know and love.”

The Tour de France's Saitama Criterium has been cancelled for the second straight year over rising Covid-19 cases, organizers said, days before the Tokyo Olympic opening ceremony.

"We have reached the conclusion that our priority is ensuring the safety and security of the people of Saitama, athletes and other participants, and fans," organisers said in a statement late Tuesday.

"Various anti-infection measures are being taken... but the expanding spread of infections in Japan remains unpredictable," the statement said.

The annual autumn race features winners and stars from the Tour de France and attracts some 100,000 fans to the Saitama region, north of Tokyo.

But the pandemic forced the event's cancellation last year for the first time since it started in 2013.

The greater Tokyo region has seen a rapid rise of new infections in recent weeks, prompting the central government to place the area under a state of emergency.

The measure is much looser than a lockdown, however, and Japan's pandemic outbreak remains much smaller than in many other countries.

The Tokyo Olympics started competition Wednesday with a softball game between Japan and Australia.

The Games, which will officially open Friday, will be held mostly behind closed doors with athletes and officials placed under strict anti-virus protocols.

Brett Lee believes Australia should permit private proprietors to have a part in Big Bash League, the country's Twenty20 cricket tournament, which will be launched on a Sunday the following summer by the three-peat chasing Sydney Sixers.&nbsp;

The Sydney Sixers have won the last two Big Bash titles and their mission for a third sequential title will begin against the Melbourne Stars on December 5, falling between the Test against Afghanistan in Hobart and the first Ashes Test.&nbsp;

Brett Lee has called for more private ownership in the Big Bash League to help it arrive at a higher level and include major overseas players. Brett Lee referred to the chance of Indian skipper Virat Kohli playing for the Sydney Sixers, saying it would work on the scope of the game in the country.&nbsp;

“You could have co-ownership and Cricket Australia could retain 51% and still control things, but with that extra funding I think you could get some really high profile stars to come out,’’ he said

“I am talking about the Virat Kohli’s. Imagine Kohli playing for the Sixers and the crowds you would get. I am really impressed with the Big Bash. They have done a great job. But to reach the next level that is what you would have to do," he added.

Cricket Australia is likewise in talks to prepare for an overseas draft for next season. Nonetheless, it stays dependent upon the pandemic in the country. Brett Lee trusts the draft will be a positive development since Australia and the BBL have acquired it to have the world's best players.&nbsp;

“The draft is a good idea and I would love to see the best of the best come to Australia. We have earned that right. You need those big overseas players. The IPL has done well with only four overseas players so you are seeing the best of the best youngsters, but I think it really helps to mix with top overseas players,’’ he said.

The entire schedule of the BBL is underway and should be announced soon. Most of the Aussie stars are probably going to be available for the total season, which will go on till February.

Left-hander Conway became the first New Zealand player to win the ICC Men's Player of the Month award after an astounding first month in Test cricket, cracking a solid double century on debut against England at Lord's and following it up with two half-centuries in his next two games, including in the ICC World Test Championship Final.

"I'm truly honored to win this award. That I have received it for my performances in Test cricket makes it extra special,"&nbsp;Devon Conway said. "Scoring a double century at Lord’s was a dream come true for me and to have also been able to contribute to our win over India in the ICC World Test Championship Final is something that I know I will proudly look back on in years to come. I would like to thank the ICC and New Zealand Cricket for their support and encouragement and look forward to the international cricket to come in the second half of this year."

Sophie Ecclestone wins ahead of the Indian pair: Left-arm spinner Ecclestone edged out the Indian pair of Shafali Verma and Sneh Rana to become the second English female to win the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award after Tammy Beaumont, who was crowned in February.

Ecclestone, a winner of the annual ICC Emerging Player of the Year award in 2018, was the most successful bowler in the one-off test against India in Bristol, where she finished with an eight-wicket haul. She also grabbed three wickets each in the two ODIs which followed.

"It’s really nice to win this award. It’s after a period in which we’ve played all three formats so it feels good to be recognised for my performances in the Test and the white-ball series," said&nbsp;Sophie Ecclestone. "We've been happy as a team how we’ve performed across this series. We would have liked to have won the Test match but hopefully, we can clinch the multi-format series. It’s all crucial preparation for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in New Zealand when we’ll be defending the title we won in 2017, and we feel in a decent place as a team."

It’s all crucial preparation for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in New Zealand when we’ll be defending the title we won in 2017, and we feel in a decent place as a team."

Euro 2020: PM Boris Johnson condemns racist abuse of England football team

Olympic host city Tokyo entered a new state of emergency on Monday, less than two weeks before the Games begin amid worries about whether the measures can stem a rise in COVID-19 cases.

Organizers last week announced that spectators would be banned from nearly all venues. Spectators from abroad were already banned months ago, and officials are now asking residents to watch the Games on TV to keep the movement of people, which could spread contagion, to a minimum.

Opinion polls have consistently shown the Japanese public is concerned about going ahead with the Games during the pandemic.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga's handling of the pandemic - including an initially slow vaccination rollout - has eroded his support. The issue is especially sensitive ahead of a national election and a ruling party leadership race due later this year.

"We would ask people to support athletes from home," Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato said on a Sunday TV program.

The Games, postponed from last year because of the pandemic, run from July 23 to August 8, while the state of emergency - the capitals fourth - lasts until August 22, shortly before the Paralympics begin.

The government and organizers had long seen the Games as a chance to display Japan's recovery from a devastating 2011 earthquake and nuclear crisis.

On Saturday, the governor of Fukushima prefecture, the site of the nuclear disaster, said spectators would also be banned from softball and baseball games there, reversing an earlier decision.

RISING TOKYO INFECTIONS

World No. 1 tennis player Novak Djokovic said on Sunday he was "50-50" about competing at the Tokyo&nbsp;Olympics&nbsp;following the organizers' decision to ban fans from attending and limits on the number of people he can take to the Games.

Some of the sport's biggest names, including Rafa Nadal, Dominic Thiem, Stan Wawrinka, Nick Kyrgios, Serena Williams, and Simona Halep have already said that they will skip the Games.

Japan has recorded more than 815,440 COVID-19 cases and nearly 15,000 deaths.

Recent rises in Tokyo have been particularly worrisome amid a vaccination rollout that got off to a slow start and has faced supply glitches after speeding up. Only about 28% of the population has received at least one shot of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Tokyo recorded 502 new cases on Sunday, the 23rd straight day of week-on-week gains, and experts worry that the public has grown weary of restrictions, mostly voluntary, on activities.

The coronavirus curbs include asking restaurants to close early and to stop serving alcohol in exchange for a government subsidy, measures that have hit the eateries hard and caused many to complain of unfairness as the Games are set to go ahead.

Economy Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura, who is also in charge of the pandemic response, sparked outrage when he suggested late on Thursday he would ask banks to put pressure on eateries that do not comply with the stricter measures.

In an about-face, the government's top spokesperson Kato said on Friday it had decided banks would not be asked to press restaurants and bars that do not follow the government request to stop serving alcohol under the emergency restrictions.

On Monday, "Anyone but LDP or Komeito" was trending on Twitter, a reference to voting for political parties other than Suga's ruling Liberal Democratic Party or its junior coalition partner, the Komeito, in the coming parliamentary election.

"I'm not a restaurateur, but this administration that couldn't come up with effective anti-coronavirus steps despite having a year to get ready for the&nbsp;Olympics... is no good," said one angry Twitter user.

Tokyo enters 4th COVID-19 emergency as Olympics approach

After 18 months of pandemic hell, Italy revelled in some soccer heaven on Monday after its national team brought back the Euro cup for the first time since 1968 following victory over England in London.

Led by coach Roberto Mancini, the players landed shortly after dawn to find many fans were still celebrating in the early morning cool, with the smell of fireworks lingering in the streets and flags flapping out of car windows.

"We really needed to get together again, to celebrate, to be happy, to have a shared moment. We really needed it," said Rome resident Sara Giudice.

Italy was the first Western country to be slammed by the coronavirus last year and has registered 127,775 deaths so far, more than any European country bar Britain.

Most of the restrictions aimed at curbing contagion have been lifted and Sunday felt like liberation in many squares across the country where the soccer triumph was greeted by an explosion of cheers, blaring car horns, and tears.

"You were in front of our eyes. You were in our hearts. The pain of those who have suffered. The hardships of those who have been brought to their knees by the pandemic," veteran captain Giorgio Chiellini wrote on Twitter.

The team is known simply as the Azzurri, the colour of the deep blue skies that sit over Italy throughout the summer, uniting the country as much as the shared passion for soccer.

"Soccer is not a metaphor of life, or politics, but the national team always ends up resembling the nation it represents. This past month, Mancini's team has reminded us that being Italian isn't so bad after all," Corriere della Sera newspaper said.

A brass band marched through the streets of the southern island of Lampedusa, fans rowed through the canals of Venice and a procession of honking cars drove along the same street in the northern city of Bergamo, where last year army trucks queued up to collect coffins of COVID victims.

Plaudits poured in from all sides, from politicians to priests, hoping that success on the soccer field held a broader message for a nation that registered its worst recession last year since World War Two and is now seeking redemption.

"Behind this team there is an entire country that never gives up, that never quits, that always finds new energy to express courage," Italy's association of Catholic bishops wrote.

Farmers' federation Coldiretti hoped the economy would receive a similar boost to 2006, when the Azzurri won the World Cup. On that occasion, exports rose 10% the following year, while 3.5% more tourists visited the country as the national brand received a global fillip, Coldiretti said in a statement.

"If this (victory) remains a beautiful memory in a dark moment or if instead it becomes a symbol of rebirth depends only on us," Corriere della Sera wrote.

New Zealand on Wednesday defeated India by eight wickets to win the inaugural ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final, played at the Hampshire Bowl in Southampton. New Zealand's two most experienced batters – Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor – guided the Kiwis to their first ICC trophy since 2000. <o:p></o:p>

The Black Caps, who ended up as the runners-up in 2019 World Cup, continued to build on the improvement in the longest format and enjoyed a brilliant World Test Championship cycle, especially at home. <o:p></o:p>

In a match dominated more by the bowlers, the New Zealand pace quarter stood up with Kyle Jamieson shining the brightest with a five-wicket haul in an ICC final. While Jamieson picked up seven wickets, Tim Southee and Trent Boult ended up with five wickets each. Neil Wagner’s wicket column might show just three wickets, they were crucial to strengthen New Zealand’s stronghold in the match.

New Zealand, after inviting India to bat first, had a tough opening hour with Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill stomping their authority early. However, Wagner and Jamieson turned it around. Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli stitched a partnership, albeit slow, India steadily found them in a better place. A Trent Boult special in-swinger got rid of Pujara, followed by the quick dismissal of Kohli at 44.&nbsp;

<o:p></o:p>

Ajinkya Rahane, who looked the best out of any Indian batters, had a brain-fade moment and miscued a regular pull shot for his dismissal.<o:p></o:p>

Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin added 15 and 22 respectively by playing counter-attack cricket but India’s tail failed to wag. The Virat Kohli-led outfit was bundled out for 217. <o:p></o:p>

New Zealand openers Devon Conway and Tom Latham gave a solid start to the Kiwis with 54 and 30 respectively. Kane Williamson played the captain’s knock of 49 at a time the middle-order collapsed. The all-rounders and tail come to the rescue and added crucial runs at the end. Jamieson scored 21, Southee 30, breaking six-hitting records.<o:p></o:p>

Mohammed Shami stood out from the Indian pack with four wickets, including breathtaking spells of bowling. Ishant capped it up with three while Ashwin ended up with two. Jasprit Bumrah’s off form would bother India a bit but one can expect a bowler of Bumrah’s caliber to go through it for long.

After rain delays, India’s batting cracked in the second innings with Jamieson running it past the Indian batting unit. Only Pant with a topsy-turvy 41-run knock stood out, while Rohit Sharma saw off the new ball well with 81-ball 30. <o:p></o:p>

New Zealand started their chase cautiously with both left-handed openers failing victims to Ashwin’s intelligence. A couple of dropped catches by Pujara and Bumrah hurt them Williamson, 52 not-out, Taylor, 47 not-out, guided New Zealand to a win for ages. Hockey India continued to celebrate the 73rd Olympic Day on Thursday with its member units carrying out more activities showcasing Olympic values among the young children, players, coaches and administrative staff. The activities were organised keeping in mind the social distancing and safety guidelines prescribed by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Hockey India Member Units will be conducting activities and continuing the celebrations for Olympic Day through the week of June 21, 2021. The theme for this year's Olympic Day celebrations is the Year of the Youth and keeping that in mind, Hockey India’s Member Units marked this special Olympic Day in the year of Olympics with activities that spread the message of spirit of sportsmanship and unity through hockey-focused activities including quizzes, drawing competitions and essay writing competitions on Olympic Day and Olympic values, along with spreading awareness on the importance of healthy living, staying indoors and staying fit. Through the activities conducted for Olympic Day, it was Hockey India's ambition to strengthen the link that children, young people and adults have with the sport, and through these activities it brought together people from different walks of life, different age groups, without any gender and physical biases, to provide an opportunity to reminisce their favourite Olympic moments and promote the Olympic values. UEFA on Thursday scrapped the away goals rule from all of its club competition from the 2021-22 season. The rule was used to get the winner of a two-legged knockout tie in cases where both the teams had scored the same number of goals over the period of two matches. <o:p></o:p>

The away goals rule was introduced in 1965 and is behind many of the spectacular moments since then. Many minnows have upstaged giants due to away goals rule while there have been many comebacks and heartbreaking moments relating to the rule.<o:p></o:p>

For the 2021-2022 season, two teams scoring the same number of goals over the two legs will see the match advance to the two 15-minute of extra time at the end of the second leg. If the score remains the same, the match goes to penalties.<o:p></o:p>

"The away goals rule has been an intrinsic part of UEFA competitions since it was introduced in 1965," UEFA president Ceferin said.

Although there was no unanimity of views, many coaches, fans and other football stakeholders have questioned its fairness and have expressed a preference for the rule to be abolished."<o:p></o:p>

Ceferin added: "The impact of the rule now runs counter to its original purpose as, in fact, it now dissuades home teams - especially in first legs - from attacking, because they fear conceding a goal that would give their opponents a crucial advantage.<o:p></o:p>

"There is also criticism of the unfairness, especially in extra time, of obliging the home team to score twice when the away team has scored.<o:p></o:p>

"It is fair to say that home advantage is nowadays no longer as significant as it once was. Taking into consideration the consistency across Europe in terms of styles of play, and many different factors which have led to a decline in home advantage, the UEFA Executive Committee has taken the correct decision in adopting the view that it is no longer appropriate for an away goal to carry more weight than one scored at home."<o:p></o:p><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p>

New Zealand players set to be available for remainder of IPL 2021 in UAE: Reports

Bengaluru United goalkeeper Srijith Ramesh draws inspiration from the former Indian footballer Gouramangi Singh, and believes that the retired centre-back is hugely beneficial for the Bengaluru United squad. Gouramangi Singh made 71 appearances for the Indian national team over the course of his playing career and is currently the first-team coach of I-League 2nd Division side Bengaluru United.

“Gouramangi serves as an ideal role model for each player at the club because of what he has already done in his playing career, and how he continues to dedicate himself to training every single day. His insight feels very easy to relate to because he can analyse each situation from a player’s perspective and help the team out. Moreover, he is a very approachable person and he takes a lot of interest in each player, particularly in the defensive unit of the team, as that’s where his biggest expertise lies,” said the 25-year-old goalkeeper from Karnataka.

It would seem that Srijith is on his way to follow the footsteps of the former India international and looks up to the player-turned-coach in more ways than one. Apart from serving the club as the custodian between the goalposts, Srijith also coaches the kids in the Bengaluru United Academy.

“I work with very young players in the Under-8 and Under-12 age categories from the Academy. The primary focus when I am working with such young kids is to try to make them fall in love with the game. At this age, more than developing their skills right away, a coach needs to ensure that they have fun playing football. This way, they will continue playing the sport in their formative years and get better at the game. Although the training is very different in the Academy structure and the first team, the approach to coaching is an aspect in which I can learn from Gouramangi,” Srijith said.

Bengaluru United has adopted a pioneering approach in creating a pathway for first-team players to become trainers by enabling them to take up coaching responsibilities in the youth setup. Srijith is making the most of this opportunity at the moment.

“I have been with the club since its inception, and I always wanted to do more. I have some time to spare on my hands after the first-team training sessions, and I wanted to proactively take up coaching the kids at this time. The senior management and staff at Bengaluru United have fully encouraged this move. Richard Hood (Head Coach, Bengaluru United) has been a great mentor for me and offered his support at each step. He has worked in Indian grassroots football for over 8 years now, so he naturally has a lot to offer when it comes to youth development in football,” said Srijith.

All-rounder Kyle Jamieson proved to be a match-winner for New Zealand in the ICC World Test Championship Final as the Kiwis defeated India by eight wickets to lift the Mace at the Hampshire Bowl in Southampton on Wednesday. <o:p></o:p>

Jamieson picked up a match total of seven wickets including a five-wicket haul in the first innings to help New Zealand win the summit clash against India. <o:p></o:p>

Indian skipper Virat Kohli lavished high praise on Jamieson as he said that his height gives him an added advantage while adding the Indian batters didn’t put him under enough pressure. Kohli further praised Jamieson’s consistency with the red ball while citing his prolific numbers in Test cricket. Notably, Jamieson and Kohli both play for the Indian Premier League franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore.

We allowed him to bowl in similar areas for long periods of time and probably didn't work out the areas that we could score against him, and that was probably down to his consistency, as well. For a tall guy like that to not miss his length so often is quality, and his consistency is what made it very difficult for all of us,” Kohli said in the post-match press conference. <o:p></o:p>

“So yeah, nothing drastically different from something that we have faced over the years, but yeah, just his consistency from the height which he bowls at and his accuracy was something that worked in his favour, and he's had a great start to his career and his numbers are what they are because he's very consistent with the ball,” the Indian skipper added.

Cricket: WTC Final prize money: How much did New Zealand and India win?

Max Verstappen will seek to extend his lead over Lewis Hamilton in the world championship at this weekend's Styrian Grand Prix as the cracks in Mercedes' armoury widen.

The 23-year-old Dutchman heads the defending seven time champion by 12 points after beating him at last Sunday's French Grand Prix as the Formula One circus prepares for the second part of a triple-header of three consecutive races, two in Austria following the closely-fought encounter at Le Castellet.

Hamilton, 36, and his Mercedes team were unable to find an answer to Red Bull's competitiveness, speed and superior tactical acumen in France and their hopes of retaining their titles could be badly damaged if they cannot recapture form and fortunes.

But after licking their wounds, they are determined to bounce back with an attacking response to prevent their rivals claiming a fourth straight win for the first time since 2014.&nbsp;

Last year, when the sweeping circuit in the Styrian Alps also hosted two successive season-opening events, Mercedes won both with Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas claiming one apiece.

However, Verstappen won in 2018 and 2019 and he has been the dominant force since Hamilton's last win in early May.

If he can triumph again in the Styrian race, he will be well-placed for a repeat seven days later in the Austrian Grand Prix and might then have a comfortable cushion in points advantage before Hamilton's home British Grand Prix at Silverstone in July.

Both men and both teams will know, however, that the Red Bull Ring, a down-sized version of its old Osterreichring predecessor, remains a majestic track with a habit of creating drama and, occasionally, controversy.

Red Bull go into the weekend with a 36-point lead in the constructors championship and, importantly, a straight-line speed advantage that they demonstrated at the Paul Ricard circuit, leaving Hamilton and his team baffled and frustrated.

The Briton, 36, could not explain if this was due to 'drag' – the use of less wing – or power from the upgraded Honda engines introduced in France and faces the prospect of extending his winless streak to four races for the first time since 2016, the only year since 2014 when he was not champion.

His erstwhile Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg won the 2016 title, when Hamilton went five without a win.&nbsp;

He also went six without winning from 2017 to 2018, three at the end of one season and the start of the next.

Cracks are appearing in Mercedes' once-impenetrable performance armoury as last Sunday's loss, after leading when Verstappen ran wide at the first corner, showed.

Strategic errors by the team undid both Hamilton and Bottas, as conceded by Mercedes team strategist James Vowles and boss Toto Wolff.

"In a season like this, every point will matter and make a difference," said Wolff.

"And we've left points on the table at the last few races. We've debriefed France and we understand where we have to improve.

"Now it's all about focusing on bringing those improvements to the next two rounds in Austria where, hopefully, we can swing the positive momentum back in our favour."

Verstappen, showing composure beyond his years, has ignored the title speculation.&nbsp;

"I just want to go to the next race and try to win again," he said.&nbsp;

"I know it's not always possible, but we try as a team every weekend to get the best out of it."

He shrugged aside a recent exchange of comments suggesting he was faster than Hamilton.&nbsp;

Max Verstappen will seek to extend his lead over Lewis Hamilton in the world championship at this weekend's Styrian Grand Prix as the cracks in Mercedes' armoury widen.

But after licking their wounds, they are determined to bounce back with an attacking response to prevent their rivals claiming a fourth straight win for the first time since 2014. Cristiano Ronaldo on Wednesday equalised former Iranian striker Ali Daei’s all-time international goal-scoring record as the Portuguese maestro scored his 109th goal for Portugal in Euro 2020 match against France.<o:p></o:p>

The Portuguese forward, also the leading goal-scorer in Euro history, netted a brace from the penalty spot to help his side reach the knockouts of the tournament while also matching the iconic record in his 178th international match.<o:p></o:p>

The 36-year-old is also the first to appear at five editions of the Euro and has already netted five goals in three Group F matches. While Portugal, Germany and France qualified from the ‘group of death’, Hungary missed out on qualification despite a gutsy fight.<o:p></o:p>

The Juventus forward has now 14 European Championship goals, five more than French legend Michel Platini.<o:p></o:p>

Ronaldo bagged his first international goal in Euro 2004 and has since risen as one of the all-time greats if not the greatest footballer.

Tim Southee enjoyed a fine day with bat and ball to put New Zealand in a strong position heading into the reserve day of the ICC World Test Championship Final in Southampton.

The 32-year-old scored a quickfire 30 before removing both Indian openers in an absorbing final session, with India leading by 32.&nbsp;

Starting the day trailing by 116 runs, New Zealand began patiently, with Kane Williamson anchoring the innings, but three wickets before lunch opened the door for India.&nbsp;

However, cameos from Kyle Jamieson and Southee were enough to secure a 32-run first innings lead to sit in the driver’s seat in the push for a result.&nbsp;

Southee then removed Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma with some clever inswing in tricky batting conditions.&nbsp;

New Zealand made a circumspect start to the day, with runs hard to come by after a delayed start.&nbsp;

It took more than four overs for the first runs off the bat, and just 16 were scored in the first hour of play.&nbsp;

That pressure eventually told, with Ross Taylor driving on the up off Mohammed Shami, caught by a diving Gill for 11.&nbsp;

Henry Nicholls followed soon after for seven, caught by Rohit Sharma off the bowling of Ishant Sharma before Shami cleaned up BJ Watling for one as New Zealand slipped to 135/5 at lunch.&nbsp;

If the first session belonged to India, New Zealand fought back in the second, playing with greater intent, with Colin de Grandhomme’s drive for four to kick off the session an indication of what would follow.&nbsp;

The all-rounder fell leg before to Shami for 13, but Jamieson came in and hammered 21 off just 16 deliveries, including one huge heave over long-on off Shami.&nbsp;

The Indian quick had his revenge the very next ball, as Jamieson hit a top-edge to Jasprit Bumrah at long leg.&nbsp;

All the while, Williamson was plugging away at the other end, eventually dismissed for 49 after 177 deliveries, caught by Virat Kohli as he was tempted to play a wide one by Ishant Sharma.&nbsp;

His strike rate of 27.7 is the lowest he has had in an innings where he has reached 20, an indication of just how hard he had to dig in, but while he missed out on a half-century, New Zealand had the lead by the time he departed.&nbsp;

At 221 for eight, the tail was given license to have a go, and Southee took full advantage. He hit two sixes and a four in his 46-ball 30 putting on some valuable runs with Neil Wagner (0) and Trent Boult (5 not out) before he was the last man out, bowled off his pads by Ravindra Jadeja.&nbsp;

To challenge for the win, New Zealand needed some early wickets, and Gill fell for eight as Southee brought one back in to pin him leg before with the deficit still at eight.

Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara knuckled down but another Southee inswinger did for the former, failing to play a shot as he went LBW for 30.&nbsp;

Pujara and Kohli saw out the remainder of the session and will return on Wednesday looking to build on India’s lead of 32.&nbsp;

The ICC confirmed that the reserve day would be utilised with a maximum of 98 overs (83 plus 15) to be bowled and play to begin at 10.30 a.m.&nbsp;BST

Hockey India celebrates Olympic Day 2021 by bringing hockey community together

PV Sindhu will be one of India’s biggest medal prospects in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics 2020 with the quadrennial event going&nbsp;underway on July 23, after a year of postponement. The Rio Olympics 2016 silver medallist will be eyeing the coveted gold medal after narrowly missing out on the top podium in the last Games.

Ahead of the Tokyo Olympics 2020, Indian badminton star PV Sindhu, in an exclusive interview with WION’s Sports Editor,&nbsp;Digvijay&nbsp;Singh Deo, talked about a range of things starting from the strict bio-bubble protocols in the Games, the new normal in the world’s biggest sporting event, mental toughness in the time of stringent regulations and much more.

Olympics is all about proving your mettle on a global stage. The fans are an integral part of the event but with the COVID-19 pandemic, the Games will feature far lesser crowds and no international spectators. Sindhu, who was the first Indian to win the Badminton World Championship, said that she will miss the normalcy when the Tokyo 2020 kickstarts in July.

“Definitely we will miss the normalcy. If you compare to the tournaments in the last 3-4 years, it will be very different. But one needs to understand because we are in a situation, this is not the right time to do everything and we have to make sure we are safe but also at the same time you can't expect it to be suffocating because we need to get used to the new normal,” Sindhu told WION in an exclusive interview.

“When I played a couple of tournaments in January and February, it was fine, I mean, we are getting used to it. Obviously, it is sad that we won't have many crowds around us. There won't be many&nbsp;cheering for us and we have to sort of go straight to the Village after the matches. These are the few things which are different but we have to get used to them. Just stay in the bio-bubble and stay safe. But yeah, we do miss the normalcy,” the first Indian woman to earn an Olympic silver medal added.

“They (organisers) will make sure we will be safe and secure. It is not just about one country, there are so many athletes coming from across the globe. They have promised us if we follow the protocols, we will be safe and secure. The protocols are really strict. We will be tested every day beside the isolation protocols in Tokyo. It is for everyone's safety and to make sure everyone is inside the bio-bubble. After landing we will be tested and then they will take us to the Village and make sure we are there only. There are so many protocols but I am sure we will be safe and secure if everybody follows the guidelines,” Sindhu explained.

The protocols will involve daily testing of athletes for a week before they depart for Japan and for them to "refrain from coming into contact with other teams for three days after they arrive" in Japan. But at a time, when athletes train regularly to regain their peak, Indians will have to undergo a three-day quarantine upon landing in Japan, hence, missing their training regime.

"They (organisers)&nbsp;said if you are out of India then you don't have to do the three days quarantine. And if you are in India then you have to 7 days testing prior to reaching and then 3 days quarantine after landing. It is a tough task. It is not the right time to figure a way out, because we don't have enough time. Wherever we want to go, if we want to go somewhere so that we won't have a 3-day quarantine, there's no chance of going because if you go you have to quarantine for 14 days, 10 days, or seven days. That doesn't make sense at all. So the only thing you can do and hope is you make us a way there. Still, there are talks going but if there are so strict, then we will have to follow the rules. There are no second thoughts at the moment because it is too late," Sindhu further elaborated.

There have been complaints and grumbles around the bio-secure bubble fatigue from the cricket world. Players have said that they feel mentally tired during tours while many have pulled out from important series and tournaments.

Sindhu is of the view that players are slowly getting used to the bio-secure bubble protocols and the pros and cons it brings along. However, the ace Indian shuttler added that it will be a completely different experience this time as compared to the Rio Olympics.

“Definitely it is a new challenge. I have played the last three tournaments like that (in bio-bubble) and we are getting used to it. Before, we didn't know what to do and where to not to go. I am used to it now. Talking about the crowd, yes, we will miss it. Olympics are Olympics. When you compare it to Rio, it will be very different. At the same time, we have to get used to it, we have to take it like a practice session where there is no crowd. And that is how we have to keep ourselves mentally strong,” Sindhu said.

PV Sindhu will be one of India’s biggest medal prospects in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics 2020 with the quadrennial event going underway on July 23, after a year of postponement. The Rio Olympics 2016 silver medallist will be eyeing the coveted gold medal after narrowly missing out on the top podium in the last Games. Ahead of the Tokyo Olympics 2020, Indian badminton star PV Sindhu, in an exclusive interview with WION’s Sports Editor, Digvijay Singh Deo, talked about a range of things starting from the strict bio-bubble protocols in the Games, the new normal in the world’s biggest sporting event, mental toughness in the time of stringent regulations and much more. There won't be many cheering for us and we have to sort of go straight to the Village after the matches. These are the few things which are different but we have to get used to them. Just stay in the bio-bubble and stay safe. But yeah, we do miss the normalcy,” the first Indian woman to earn an Olympic silver medal added. How 'Unlocking Creativity' brought athletes Matisse Thybulle, Miles Chamley-Watson, Tania Sachdev and more together on-screen – all from the director's apartment in Amsterdam.

Unlocking Creativity tells the story of athletes from all around the world in a film where they’re quickly thrown from the inside to the outside and finally back practicing the sport they love.

Because of the various travel restrictions in place around the world, this global shoot was pulled off with its director calling the shots from his Amsterdam apartment.

Erwin van den Ijssel would usually hand over instructions via a Bluetooth headset and regularly spoke through a giant speaker to the various crews on the ground.

"It's a project where we're shooting with multiple athletes around the world and we're trying to sort of connect them in a really creative way," the Dutchman explained.

"The way we filmed this was a bit different to how we'd normally approach a project, because we were dealing with all these different locations. Because of travel restrictions everything was done remotely. Basically, it was all about me looking at the camera feed from my little room in Amsterdam. It's all about having really good communication."

The film itself stars a range of athletes. From the USA there are luminaries such as basketball player Matisse Thybulle, fencer Miles Chamley-Watson and skateboard sensations Zion Wright and Courage Adams. From Turkey, there's Taekwondo world champion Kübra Dağlı, while Chilean wingsuit flyer Sebastián Álvarez makes a special cameo skydiving from 10,000 feet in for a chess game against Tania Sachdev from India. Japanese stars including slackliner Haruki Kinoshita and esports player Kana Tani also feature.

Camera tricks make it seem as though Thybulle has gone from the comfort of his sofa straight onto a court, while wakeskate world champion Zuzana Vráblová from Slovakia appears to be dragged off her couch, out of her window and straight onto the water.

The result of all of that coordination and creative communication? A 14-minute clip like no other.

With exactly one month to go for the Tokyo Olympic Games, the Olympic fever is slowly engulfing the entire sporting world. While the Indian athletes carry out their high-octane practice sessions, it's time for the hockey fans relive the memories from the triumphant Olympic campaigns in the past through Hockey India's Flashback Series.&nbsp;

Former Indian Hockey Forward Gurdev Singh recalls the fond&nbsp;memories from the 1956 Olympics.

Gurdev Singh, who played an integral part in India's Gold Medal victory at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, reminisced playing alongside the great Balbir Singh Sr. The 87-year-old recounted that if Balbir Singh got into the D, he would definitely find the back of the net, "We played with five Forwards in that tournament. I scored 5 goals in the Olympics. We all used to practice a lot, but Balbir Singh Sr used to practice much more. Whenever he got into the D, he never missed the goal. He was a really good scorer."

Infectious disease expert Atsuo Hamada still fondly remembers the thrill of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, but with a month until Japan hosts the Games again, he has concerns.

The journey to this year's Games has been like no other. After a historic pandemic postponement, organisers refused to pull the plug, despite infection risks, travel restrictions and persistent public opposition.

As the first athletes start arriving, Hamada says the Games must "be done in a way that will not bring the virus and variants to Japan."&nbsp;

"It will have to be done in a way that will not place extra burden on the medical system," he told AFP in an interview.

It's a delicate balancing act, and some medical professionals still want the Games called off, saying the risks of getting it wrong are too high.

Even Hamada, who makes no secret of his excitement about seeing the Olympics in Japan again, advises caution.

"The best thing is to ask the public to stay home and watch the Olympics on TV," he said.

Organisers have already imposed an unprecedented ban on overseas fans, and on Monday, announced domestic spectators would be limited to 10,000 per event.

They said events could move behind closed doors if the situation worsens, but Hamada wants a stronger commitment.

"In the worst-case scenario, a cancellation must be considered," said Hamada, a professor at Tokyo Medical University.

He cites the recent situation in Osaka city, where dozens of people died from coronavirus as the medical system was overwhelmed.

When the Games were postponed last year, many hoped the pandemic would be over by the opening ceremony this summer.

Instead,&nbsp;even as vaccines roll out internationally, a deadly winter virus wave spread across the globe and highly infectious variants are on the rise.

<h2>- 'A degree of control' -</h2>

Organisers have sought to reassure an anxious public with tough countermeasures.

Athletes will be tested daily, and are banned from going anywhere but the Olympic village and their competition venues.&nbsp;

They can only enter the village shortly before their events and must leave within 48 hours of their discipline ending. Over 80 percent of those in the village will be vaccinated, Olympic officials say.

Hamada said those measures "should result in a degree of control."

But he worries about those outside the bubble, including participants like media coming from abroad.

"Journalists will surely want to report about Japan. Will they obey the rules?"&nbsp;

"I feel there have to be limits on their movement," he said.

Overseas journalists are barred from going anywhere but their hotels and Olympic sites for the first 14 days in Japan, with their movement tracked by GPS.

But Hamada believes more may be necessary, particularly for those coming from countries with high rates of infection or variants of concern.

He suggests they could be placed in a separate bubble, or face more rigorous testing, though any additional measures should "be done in ways that are not discriminatory."

<h2>- Pressure on the medical system -</h2>

Hamada and other medical experts worry that efforts to keep the Games safe, including regular testing and isolation of suspected cases, could add pressure to the country's medical system.

To assuage those fears, the International Olympic Committee has offered to bring extra doctors and nurses from overseas, and organisers have pledged to avoid stretching resources.

Hamada warned that Japan must not let the Games slow down its vaccine drive.

"Japan's vaccination efforts are making progress, and I do not wish to see them come under pressure," he said.

Despite his worries, the specialist is eager to relive the Olympic excitement of 1964.

He was nine when he sat inside the national stadium soaking in the euphoria of the Games, and remembers feeling his local street had been transformed after the world's top marathon runners pounded past.

"I still have this feeling inside me that I want to be there again, to experience it again."

He cites the recent situation in Osaka city, where dozens of people died from coronavirus as the medical system was overwhelmed. When the Games were postponed last year, many hoped the pandemic would be over by the opening ceremony this summer. Instead, even as vaccines roll out internationally, a deadly winter virus wave spread across the globe and highly infectious variants are on the rise. - 'A degree of control' - Organisers have sought to reassure an anxious public with tough countermeasures. Athletes will be tested daily, and are banned from going anywhere but the Olympic village and their competition venues. They can only enter the village shortly before their events and must leave within 48 hours of their discipline ending. Over 80 percent of those in the village will be vaccinated, Olympic officials say. Hamada said those measures "should result in a degree of control." But he worries about those outside the bubble, including participants like media coming from abroad. "Journalists will surely want to report about Japan. Will they obey the rules?" "I feel there have to be limits on their movement," he said. Overseas journalists are barred from going anywhere but their hotels and Olympic sites for the first 14 days in Japan, with their movement tracked by GPS. But Hamada believes more may be necessary, particularly for those coming from countries with high rates of infection or variants of concern. He suggests they could be placed in a separate bubble, or face more rigorous testing, though any additional measures should "be done in ways that are not discriminatory." - Pressure on the medical system - Hamada and other medical experts worry that efforts to keep the Games safe, including regular testing and isolation of suspected cases, could add pressure to the country's medical system.

Japan infection expert eyes Olympics with excitement, concern

Spain are bracing themselves for a test of nerve in their last group game against Slovakia on Wednesday, with Luis Enrique's side needing victory to guarantee their place in the last 16.

After leaving out Sergio Ramos, Luis Enrique has left himself open to questions about a lack of leadership in his youthful squad.

A bright start against Sweden fizzled out in the second half while a missed penalty against Poland turned a decent display into one paralysed by anxiety and tension.

"This country has won the Euro and the World Cup but in this squad there are many youngsters," Cesar Azpilicueta said on Monday.

"There are several captains in our team, we know how to act and everyone is going to give their all on Wednesday."

Captain Sergio Busquets is expected to return after rejoining the group on Friday following his negative Covid-19 test. Busquets has not played in either of Spain's first two matches.

"He's an important player, with his experience on and off the pitch," Azpilicueta said. "He's an incredible captain and we know the dominance he can bring in midfield. We're very happy he's back."

Azpilicueta said Spain can draw inspiration from Chelsea's triumph in the Champions League last season.

He lifted Chelsea's second European Cup after the team changed gear under new coach Thomas Tuchel, a superb finish culminating in a surprise victory over Manchester City in the final.

<h2>- Not about 'how you start' -</h2>

Spain are pinning their hopes on a similar transformation after two disappointing draws against Sweden and Poland mean&nbsp;they currently sit third, a point behind Slovakia and two behind Sweden in Group E.

"It's not how you start, it's how you finish," said Azpilicueta.

"I have seen it this year in the Champions League. Before January we weren't very good, and after that we did very well.&nbsp;

"A lot of people gave us up for dead last season, they thought we were out of the Champions League, out of the race for top four. People write you off but you never give up."&nbsp;

Despite his excellent form for Chelsea, Azpilicueta has rarely been favoured by Luis Enrique and has started on the bench for both of Spain's opening two games.

"We are all fighting for places," he said. "For now, we don't know anything about the next line-up."

Azpilicueta's experience might be a valuable addition to a youthful Spanish team, who now find themselves under pressure to make it out of what looked a straightforward group.

"We are not in the situation we expected," Azpilicueta said. "We would have liked to be more comfortable but football rarely gives you what you expect. We are alive and we depend on ourselves.

"We must be humble, self-critical and correct what we are doing wrong and also assess what we are doing well. It's a combination of the two. It's an all or nothing game so we have to approach it with the confidence that we will go through.

"The situation is not what we hoped it would be but you can't just say: 'We didn't win the first two games, that's us out.’&nbsp;

"You have to fight to the end and all pull in the same direction. Now we have a clear objective and it's important we have the right mentality because Wednesday is do or die, we have to approach it like that."

Luis Enrique could make changes, with Azpilicueta, Thiago Alcantara and Mikel Oyarzabal among those in contention to come in.

Football: Doubts hang over Spain ahead of 'do or die' game against Slovakia

Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Carl Nassib made history on Monday after coming out as the first active openly gay player in the NFL, announcing his sexual orientation in a post on social media.&nbsp;

The 28-year-old five-year veteran said in a video posted on Instagram he hoped his example would boost visibility of other gay athletes.&nbsp;

"I just wanted to take a quick moment to say that I'm gay," Nassib said in the video.&nbsp;

"I've been meaning to do this for a while now but finally feel comfortable getting it off my chest. I really have the best life, the best family, friends and job a guy can ask for.

"I'm a pretty private person, so I hope you guys know that I'm not doing this for attention. I just think that representation and visibility are so important.

"I actually hope that one day, videos like this and the whole coming out process are not necessary, but until then I will do my best and my part to cultivate a culture that's accepting and compassionate."

Nassib added that he was donating $100,000 to the Trevor Project, a non-profit group which works to prevent suicide among LGBTQ youth in the United States.

In a written post which accompanied the statement, Nassib said he had "agonized over this moment for the last 15 years."

He said support from family, friends, coaches and fellow players encouraged him to come out.

"I would not have been able to do this without them," he said.

<h2>- 'Proud of you' -</h2>

Nassib is the first player on an active roster to come out as gay in the NFL.

Several players have come out after leaving the league, the most popular professional sport in the United States.

In 2014, college player Michael Sam was drafted by the St. Louis Rams after coming out as gay but was released after playing in a handful of pre-season games and never played a regular season game in the league.

The Raiders meanwhile praised Nassib in a post on Twitter.

"Proud of you Carl," the team wrote in a post accompanying Nassib's Instagram statement.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell saluted Nassib, saying he hoped similar announcements in future would no longer be newsworthy.

"The NFL family is proud of Carl for courageously sharing his truth today," Goodell said.&nbsp;

"Representation matters. We share his hope that someday soon statements like his will no longer be newsworthy as we march toward full equality for the LGBTQ+ community.

"We wish Carl the best of luck this coming season."

Wade Davis II, one of a handful of former NFL players who came out after leaving the league, was among the first to congratulate Nassib.&nbsp;

"Bravo Carl Nassib -- thank you for inviting us in," Davis wrote on Twitter.

Former basketball player Jason Collins, who became only the second openly gay athlete in a major professional sports league in the United States when he joined the Brooklyn Nets in 2014 also offered support.&nbsp;

"Very proud of Carl Nassib!" Collins wrote on Twitter. "Incredibly happy for him and can't wait to watch him play this upcoming season."

The World Health Organization (WHO) said Tuesday it was "concerned" that countries were easing virus restrictions around the football games at the Euro 2020, noting some areas were already seeing rising cases.

"WHO is concerned about easing of restrictions in some of the host countries... A few of the stadiums hosting the tournament are now increasing the number of spectators allowed into the stadium to watch a game," Robb Butler, an executive director at WHO's Regional Office for Europe, said in a statement to AFP.
