Virat Kohli is set to join the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) squad for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 on April 1, two days after the team commences their camp in Chennai. Kohli would need to undergo the mandatory one-week-long quarantine put in place as part of IPL SOPs&nbsp;after the Indian skipper exited the bio-secure bubble in Pune following India’s ODI series against England.&nbsp;

RCB will play their first phase of IPL 2021 matches, including the season opener on April 9 against defending champions Mumbai Indians, in Chennai.&nbsp;

Kohli has been part of bio-secure bubbles since the last IPL. While he exited it during India’s Test series against Australia to be with his wife Anushka Sharma for the birth of their first child, Kohli was back in the bubble for the entire home tour against England.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The start of the FIFA World Cup qualifier match between Switzerland and Lithuania was delayed by 15 minutes on Sunday due to the goal-posts being too big.

Ground staff at the Kybunpark Stadium was called into action in a bid to replace the goal-posts which media reports claimed were between five to 10 cm too high on one side when inspected by match officials before the start of the game. The imbalance was caused by the left post not being sunk correctly into the ground.

As the ground staff tried to bring new goal-post into the pitch, the bars got stuck in one of the shelters of the tunnel, causing another delay in the process.

Steve Smith has said that he would be happy to return as Australia captain given the national selectors want him for the role. Smith, while giving his complete support to current Australian captains Tim Paine and Aaron Finch, said he would have no problems if the cricket board looks for a new captain while adding he is now better equipped to lead the side again.&nbsp;

However, Smith admitted he hasn’t always been sure about taking back the leadership role following the intense trauma of the infamous Cape Town ball-tampering scandal.&nbsp;

Speculations surrounding Australia captaincy have constantly popped up since Smith’s return to international cricket after completing his one-year ban. While many have said that Smith should get the captaincy back, others have the opinion that the ace Australian batsman should never lead the side again.&nbsp;

Indian captain Virat Kohli has warned&nbsp;that players are suffering after staying months inside bio-secure bubbles amid the COVID-19 pandemic as&nbsp;they head into the highly competitive Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021.&nbsp;

Kohli, who has been vocal about hectic scheduling amid stringent restrictions due to the virus, again raised&nbsp;concerns&nbsp;following the completion of the three-match ODI series which India won 2-1 in Pune on Sunday.&nbsp;

Players from both India and England moved on immediately to join their respective IPL 2021 squads and will again have to stay within the limits of the IPL “bubble”.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Scheduling needs to be looked at in future, because playing in 'bubbles' for so long, two to three months, is going to be very, very difficult going forward," Kohli said.&nbsp;

"You can't expect everyone to be at the same level of mental strength.&nbsp;Some times&nbsp;you do get cooked and you do feel like a bit of a change.&nbsp;

"I am sure things will be discussed and things will change in the future as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"But a different tournament, it brings fresh challenges heading into the IPL."&nbsp;

Since the restart of cricket in August 2020, international players have been restricted to staying inside bio-secure bubbles since August with small breaks.&nbsp;

From September to January, Indian players went through the strictest quarantine and bio-bubble rules in the delayed IPL 2020 in UAE followed by India’s tour of Australia. The Indian players had a short break between the end of Australia&nbsp;seres&nbsp;and the start of England series, which comprised of four Tests, five T20Is and three ODIs.&nbsp;

England’s much-talked-about rest and rotate policy made sure players got rest during their three months touring Sri Lanka, where they played two Tests, and India.&nbsp;

England players including Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler (both Rajasthan Royals), Jonny Bairstow (Sunrisers Hyderabad) and Sunday's batting hero Sam Curran (Chennai Super Kings) are staying on to join the IPL.&nbsp;

Both Buttler and Bairstow have said that they have “enough” left in their batteries to play the IPL 2021 before going back to the international calendar and gear up for T20 World Cup, scheduled to be hosted by India later this year.&nbsp;

"It's been great that everyone's health has been really looked after and whenever it's possible to get out of the 'bubble' and back in," said Buttler, who stood in as captain for injured Eoin Morgan in the last two one-day internationals.

"So we are all very thankful for that to help with those situations and also it's about how we plan moving forward. That's going to be part of player welfare."

'You can't expect everyone...': Virat Kohli warns players 'cooked' in bubble life ahead of IPL 2021

Following India’s stunning clean-sweep of the England tour where the Virat Kohli-led outfit won the Test, T20I and ODI series, former Australia captain Ian Chappell has sounded a warning to other teams&nbsp;saying India are on their way to dominance.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Chappell is of the view that the emergence of young talents well equipped to take on the world’s best strikes a note of&nbsp;fear. The former Aussie skipper heaped praise on the Indian team while lauding their ability and confidence to fight in overseas conditions as well.&nbsp;

“India’s recent successes in Australia – particularly the latest one – have only reinforced the players’ belief in their ability to win under any circumstance. In an era where teams struggle overseas, India now has the depth of talent to alter that pattern. No longer can opponents afford to say, when India&nbsp;are&nbsp;on their doorstep, ‘Just pick a string of fast bowlers with long run-ups and the series will be ours’,” Chappell wrote in his column at&nbsp;ESPNcricinfo.&nbsp;

Chappell then answered one of the most asked questions, can India carry on with their dominance for&nbsp;years?:&nbsp;&nbsp;“‘Can India replicate the dominant periods of West Indies and Australia?’: “India have finally got the equation right and as long as they avoid the pitfalls often associated with continuing success, they are better equipped than any team to produce an era of dominance. The rest of the cricketing world beware. The emergence of such talents as Shubman Gill, Mohammed Siraj, Navdeep Saini, Washington Sundar, T Natarajan, and&nbsp;Axar&nbsp;Patel would have been monumental if it had happened in the space of three years, let alone just three months as it did.&nbsp;

“And when you consider that Shardul Thakur excelled in just his second game and the ebullient Rishabh Pant was an international match-winner before his 20th appearance, it really is a rosy picture. A rosy picture, that is, if you’re an Indian fan; for the rest of the cricket world, it strikes a note of fear,” Chappell concluded.&nbsp;

No longer can opponents afford to say, when India are on their doorstep, ‘Just pick a string of fast bowlers with long run-ups and the series will be ours’,” Chappell wrote in his column at ESPNcricinfo. ALSO READ: England will not panic despite India tour defeats: Buttler Chappell then answered one of the most asked questions, can India carry on with their dominance for years?: “‘Can India replicate the dominant periods of West Indies and Australia?’: “India have finally got the equation right and as long as they avoid the pitfalls often associated with continuing success, they are better equipped than any team to produce an era of dominance. The rest of the cricketing world beware. The emergence of such talents as Shubman Gill, Mohammed Siraj, Navdeep Saini, Washington Sundar, T Natarajan, and Axar Patel would have been monumental if it had happened in the space of three years, let alone just three months as it did. “And when you consider that Shardul Thakur excelled in just his second game and the ebullient Rishabh Pant was an international match-winner before his 20th appearance, it really is a rosy picture. A rosy picture, that is, if you’re an Indian fan; for the rest of the cricket world, it strikes a note of fear,” Chappell concluded. England all-rounder Ben Stokes on Friday demolished the Indian bowling attack as he hammed 99 runs off just 52 deliveries in the second ODI against India at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. However, Stokes missed out on a well-deserved century after he edged a Bhuvneshwar Kumar delivery at 99. As Stokes walked back to the dugout after&nbsp;his dismissal, he was seen looking up to the heavens and saying "sorry” to his late father.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Stokes was even seen showing the folded middle finger gesture as a tribute to his father, Ged. Ben's late father&nbsp;got part of his finger amputated instead of getting it operated on to continue his rugby league career in the 1980s as he couldn't afford to miss matches.&nbsp;

Stokes looked gutted as he made the long walk back to the dugout after missing out on what would have been his fourth ODI century. However, he did the damage in his 99-run knock as he smoked 10 sixes and four boundaries.&nbsp;

2nd ODI: Ben Stokes says 'sorry' to his late father after getting dismissed for 99 - Watch

England on Friday levelled the three-match ODI series against India as the Jos Buttler-led side sealed a six-wicket win on Friday at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune following a blistering century by Jonny Bairstow and a sensational 99-run knock by Ben Stokes.&nbsp;

England, after winning the toss, invited India to bat first but the Men in Blue lost openers Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma early in the innings. While Virat Kohli and KL Rahul stitched a crucial partnership, the Indian captain's wait for his 71st international century continued after he was dismissed for 66.

However, KL Rahul went on to record his fifth ODI ton whereas Rishabh Pant hammered the English bowlers on his way to 77 runs off 40 deliveries. Hardik Pandya finished the innings strongly for India as the Men in Blue posted a massive 336/6 in 50 overs.

The visitors, chasing 337, were off to a flyer with openers Bairstow and Jason Roy scoring 110 runs for the opening stand. However, the onslaught began after Roy departed. Ben Stokes and Bairstow, after settling down, made a mockery of the Indian bowlers as they dealt in sixes and boundaries.

While Bairstow scored 124 off 112, Stokes smashed 99 off just 52 deliveries. While Buttler departed for a duck, Dawid Malan and debutant Liam Livingstone finished the job and helped England win by&nbsp;six wickets.

A rare incident happened during the first innings of the second ODI between India and England at the Maharashtra Cricket Association in Pune on Friday. For the first time in the history of ODI cricket, a pair of brothers on opposite sides&nbsp;batted and bowled in tandem in the same match.&nbsp;

Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya – Pandya Brothers – and Sam Curran and Tom Curran – Curran Brothers – were in action all together during the first innings of the second ODI&nbsp;after Rishabh Pant was dismissed in the fifth delivery of the 47th&nbsp;over. Krunal walked out to bat, creating a unique record in the world of ODI cricket.&nbsp;

Talking about the performance, Hardik smashed 35 off just 16 balls to take India to a massive total of 336 whereas Krunal supported his brother with 12 off 9. The Currans had a tough outing with the ball with Tom conceding 83 off 10 overs&nbsp;while Sam conceded 47 off his 7 overs.&nbsp;

From tomorrow morning I will be removing myself from social media until the people in power are able to regulate their platforms with the same&nbsp;vigour&nbsp;and ferocity that they currently do when you infringe copyright. The sheer volume of racism, bullying and resulting mental torture to individuals is too toxic to ignore. There HAS to be some accountability. It is far too easy to create an account, use it to bully and harass without consequence and still remain anonymous. Until this changes, I will be disabling my accounts across all social platforms. Another bizarre rule of cricket created controversy in the ongoing second ODI between India and England when the Men in Blue and Rishabh Pant were not given a boundary due&nbsp;after bowler Tom Curran appealed for LBW at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on Friday.&nbsp;

While the rule was correctly implemented by the umpires, Pant found himself in an unfortunate position as despite hitting a boundary, he wasn't awarded a single run for it.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The incident took place in the 40th&nbsp;over of the first innings, bowled by Tom Curran. The England seamer bowled a yorker as the ball ricocheted off to the boundary rope. England appealed strongly for an LBW&nbsp;and&nbsp;the on-field umpire Virender Singh gave the southpaw out.&nbsp;However, Pant took the DRS instantly and the slow-motion replays clearly showed that the ball came off&nbsp;Pant's&nbsp;bat before going under his legs and racing past wicket-keeper Jos Buttler to the boundary rope.&nbsp;

Clause 3.7 of Appendix D of the ICC playing conditions, which deal with DRS, explains&nbsp;the reason:&nbsp;“If following a player review request, an original decision of Out is changed to Not out, then the ball is still deemed to have become dead when the original decision was made,” it states. “The batting side, while benefiting from the reversal of the dismissal, shall not benefit from any runs that may subsequently have accrued from the delivery had the on-field umpire originally.”&nbsp;

However, fans were left unimpressed by the rule and asked the ICC to amend it to avoid a ICC World Cup 2019 final-like situation in future.&nbsp;

However, Pant took the DRS instantly and the slow-motion replays clearly showed that the ball came off Pant's bat before going under his legs and racing past wicket-keeper Jos Buttler to the boundary rope. Imagine happening this in a closely fought World Cup Semi-Final or Final. DRS finds that the batsman nicked a boundary but the team is not getting 4 runs cos the umpire had mistakenly given it out. Lewis Hamilton said on Thursday he has been "educating" himself and has "taken steps in private to raise issues" over allegations of human rights abuses in countries where the Formula One circus operates, including this weekend's season-opener in Bahrain.

The 36-year-old seven-time world champion led anti-racism protests on the grid last season, regularly taking a knee before the start of each race.

However, as the new Formula One season kicks off, calls have been made by a coalition of 22 human rights groups for the sport to carry out an independent inquiry into allegations of abuses associated with the Bahrain Grand Prix.&nbsp;

A letter sent to F1 chiefs cites, for example, claims that an 11-year-old boy was arrested for joining protests against last season's race in the Gulf kingdom.

The Guardian newspaper said Hamilton as well as F1's new chief executive, Stefano Domenicali had both received copies of the letter.

Hamilton on Thursday referred to receiving letters from human rights campaigners and alleged victims of torture in Bahrain – asking him to speak out on their behalf.&nbsp;

He has raised questions about the inclusion of a Saudi Arabian Grand Prix on this year's record 23-race calendar.

"It's the first time I received letters like that, so I've taken the last few months to try and educate myself -- because coming here all these years I wasn't aware of all of the details of human rights issues," said Hamilton at a pre-season news conference.

He added he had spoken to human rights organisations, including Amnesty International, and taken steps in private to raise the issues.&nbsp;

"I don't want to say too much that may jeopardise any progress," he added.&nbsp;

"But I am definitely committed to helping in any way I can."

He said human rights should not be treated as a political issue.&nbsp;

"I don't think that we should be going to these countries and just ignoring what is happening -- and arriving, having a great time, and then leave."

<h2>- 'Zero tolerance' -</h2>

However, the Bahrain government later Thursday hit back, claiming they have a "zero-tolerance policy towards mistreatment of any kind".

"A range of institutional and legal reforms have been implemented in close collaboration with international governments and independent experts," said a government spokesperson.

"(These include) the establishment of a wholly independent Ombudsman – the first of its kind in the region – which will fully and independently investigate any allegation of mistreatment."

They added: "Furthermore, the National Institute for Human Rights – created with the assistance of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights – has independent oversight of promoting and protecting human rights within the kingdom."

Meanwhile, Hamilton said he plans to continue taking a knee this year, hoping it will provoke an uncomfortable conversation about equality and send a signal that he is listening to and representing the black community.

"I can't ignore the fact that last year weighed heavily on me," he said.&nbsp;

"As I get older, I am understanding more. I think we all went through an educational phase last year and we're all learning more."

"I plan to continue to take the knee because I think what's really important is when young children are watching what we're doing here in this sport and when they see us take the knee, they will sit and ask their parents or their teachers 'why are they doing that? What are they taking the knee for?'."

"It sparks an uncomfortable conversation. It's a fight that will continue for a long time."

Germany's national team lined up in T-shirts which spelled the message 'Human Rights' before their World Cup qualifier against Iceland on Thursday, less than two years before the finals are controversially staged in Qatar.

"We have the World Cup coming up and there will be discussions about it.... we wanted to show we are not ignoring that," Leon Goretzka, who scored the opening goal in a 3-0 win, told RTL.

"We wrote the letters ourselves. We have a large reach - and we can use it to set an example for the values we want to stand for. That was clear."

Joachim Loew's German team echoed a similar demonstration from Norway, who on Wednesday donned T-shirts with the message 'Human rights, on and off the pitch' in support of migrant workers building World Cup venues in Qatar for the 2022 finals.

The gesture, before Norway's World Cup qualifier against Gibraltar, came after several Norwegian clubs spoke out in favour of a boycott of the 2022 finals.

UK daily newspaper The Guardian recently claimed that more than 6,500 workers have died on stadium construction sites since the World Cup was awarded to Qatar in 2010.

In Germany, a poll by magazine Spiegel says two thirds of those asked were in favour of&nbsp;boycotting Qatar 2022.

Germany players in 'Human Rights' message ahead of World Cup qualifier

A patient, unbeaten maiden Test hundred by Nkrumah Bonner anchored a day of West Indies batting resistance against Sri Lanka as the home side ground through the fifth and final day of the first Test to ensure a draw on Thursday.

In just his third Test, the 32-year-old Bonner further enhanced an already burgeoning reputation as a middle-order batsman with considerably more substance than style.

He compiled a dogged 113 not out in just over seven hours during which he faced 274 balls, stroking 13 fours and one six.&nbsp;

It ensured his team comfortably saved the match at 236 for four, having been set the unlikely target of 375.

After missing out on hundreds in each of his first two Test matches in Bangladesh last month, the Jamaican right-hander was not to be denied third time round on a day when the home side needed his brand of resolute solidity once it was determined that getting 341 more runs on the final day with nine wickets in hand was not a realistic prospect.

"I did some work in the nets with the batting coach (Monty Desai) after the first innings and it paid off," said Bonner.

"Sri Lanka's bowlers are very disciplined and it was important for me to also be disciplined and keep the ball in the ‘V’ for as much as possible."

He featured in a 105-run third-wicket partnership with Kyle Mayers which occupied almost three hours and effectively killed off Sri Lankan hopes of completing an excellent fightback from a poor first day with victory.

It ensures both teams will have everything to play for when the second and final Test starts at the same Sir Vivian Richards Stadium venue on Monday.

Sri Lanka will be concerned though about the fitness of first-choice wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella who appeared to have either sustained or aggravated a finger injury on more than one occasion during the course of the day, each time requiring prolonged treatment on the field before he continued.

Mayers, who marked his Test debut on that Bangladesh campaign with a sensational, match-winning unbeaten 210 in the first match in Chattogram, curbed his naturally aggressive style admirably in reaching 52 before falling to the left-arm orthodox spin of Lasith Embuldeniya at the start of the final session.

Embuldeniya had claimed Sri Lanka's lone success of the morning's play when he removed Kraigg Brathwaite to keep the tourists' hopes alive at that stage of pressing for the win later in the day.

Having batted with exaggerated care in getting to 23 off 124 balls, the West Indies captain charged down the pitch to be bowled 20 minutes before lunch, terminating a partnership of 66 for the second wicket.

Sri Lankan hopes again flickered briefly in the final session as Mayers' demise was followed by the dismissal of Jermaine Blackwood, bowled by the impressive Vishwa Fernando operating with the second new ball to give the fast bowler his second wicket of the innings.

At 204 for four, and with more than an hour left to play, the visitors kept pressing for more success but Bonner and former captain Jason Holder ensured there were no more alarms for a West Indian team grateful to come away from the match with a draw.

"I am really pleased with the way we fought back in the second innings," said Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne in reflecting on the entire match.&nbsp;

"Today, maybe we tried too hard sometimes but the pitch got better and better to bat on and you have to give credit to Bonner and the rest of the West Indies batsmen.&nbsp;

"At least we know now what to expect from the pitch as we go into the second Test."

"I am really pleased with the way we fought back in the second innings," said Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne in reflecting on the entire match. "Today, maybe we tried too hard sometimes but the pitch got better and better to bat on and you have to give credit to Bonner and the rest of the West Indies batsmen. "At least we know now what to expect from the pitch as we go into the second Test."

Bonner's maiden Test century steers Windies to draw against Sri Lanka

The Indian football team made a fine comeback in the second half to hold fancied Oman 1-1 in its first international match in more than a year though the Gulf side dominated the friendly here on Thursday. India conceded a goal in the 42nd minute with Chinglensana Singh's clearance crossing the goal-line after hitting goalkeeper Amrinder Singh who started the match instead of Gurpreet Singh Sandhu.

Manvir Singh scored the equaliser in the 55th minute to help India pull off a rare draw against Oman in the first international outing after the COVID-19 lockdown. India head coach Igor Stimac gave debuts to as many as 10 players. He had said before the match that he would give chances to a maximum number of players for them to gain the experience of playing in big matches.

The first half was all about Oman attacking in waves with India not getting a single shot on target. Oman, who have won both the two-legged matches of the 2022 World Cup qualifying against India, played a high defensive line with more men on the attack. India were content defending their citadel with more players in their own half and just one man upfront most of the time. The Indians lost possession too easily on most occasions as Oman did not let them hold on to the ball for long.

Oman squandered a penalty in the 27th minute after Rowlin Borges committed a foul on Abdul Aziz Al Gheilani inside the box. Aziz himself took the spot-kick but shot straight to Amarinder Singh. But Oman were not to be denied a goal in the first half. Al Aghbari got the ball on the left-wing and sent a low cross on the face of the goal. Amrinder could not collect the ball cleanly and it hit Chinglensana Singh and went past the goal line.

Stimac made two changes at the start of the second session with Lalengmawia and Raynier Fernandes replacing Jeakson Singh and Rowllin Borges.

The Indians dished out a much-improved show in the second half, holding the ball a lot more than the first 45 minutes and playing a more attacking game. India equalised five minutes before the hour mark. Bipin Singh sent in a delicious cross from the right flank which was headed home by Manvir.

Oman, ranked 81st as compared to India's 104th in the FIFA charts, then pressed hard for the winning goal but Amrinder was impressive behind the bar as he made two fine saves in the 63rd and 65th minutes. India play their second international friendly against the UAE here on Monday.

The friendlies are a part of preparations for the joint qualifying round matches of the 2022 World Cup and 2023 Asian Cup to be played in June.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have reached Mumbai in a bid to start their preparations for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021, scheduled to start from April. CSK have their first round of matches in Mumbai and the MS Dhoni-led outfit would be raring to go in the T20 tournament. While&nbsp;all the players are expected to join the squad in the coming days, there is still unclarity regarding the fitness and availability of key all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.&nbsp;&nbsp;

CSK ended at the second-last position in IPL 2020 standings and would be looking to perform well in the 14th&nbsp;edition of the cash-rich tournament.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jadeja has been out of action since the third Test against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground where he suffered a dislocated thumb after being struck by a&nbsp;brutal&nbsp;Mitchell Starc bouncer. The flamboyant all-rounder had to undergo surgery and was ruled out of the remainder of the Test series against Australia and missed the entire home series against England.&nbsp;&nbsp;

All-rounder Ben Stokes has said that animated and aggressive body language might work well for Virat Kohli but that is not something how England operate. The question was in reference to Indian captain Virat Kohli's aggressive&nbsp;demeanour&nbsp;while fielding or celebrating a dismissal.&nbsp;

"Every team and every player&nbsp;has&nbsp;a certain way of operating in the field, which makes them successful. As a team over the last four-five years, that's not the way that works for us," Stokes said on the eve of their must-win second ODI against India.&nbsp;

"We stick to what we do best and what we make is to build a better side. Each team is entitled to their own way of operations. India have there and we have ours,"&nbsp;the&nbsp;dashing all-rounder said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Stokes said he prefers Kohli when he doesn't get runs as it is not good for England.&nbsp;"Personally, I prefer Virat doesn't get runs, because that's not good for us,” Stokes quipped.&nbsp;

In Joe Root's absence, Stokes was promoted to number three spot from being a finisher. However, the change in position has not affected his mindset.&nbsp;

Team India's KL Rahul on Thursday said that he was not surprised to see Prasidh Krishna hog the limelight with a sensational ODI debut as he heaped praise on the speedster from Karnataka. Rahul further said it is due to the Indian Premier League (IPL) that the youngsters coming into the Indian team are confident about their abilities to perform at the top level.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Prasidh recorded the best bowling figures by an Indian bowler on debut in ODI as he scalped four wickets in the first ODI against England in Pune.&nbsp;

"Quite honestly, I am not surprised by what Prasidh did in the first ODI. I always knew that the next player coming out of Karnataka would be Prasidh. I have watched him play a lot of junior cricket, I watched him in the nets. He was someone who would catch your eye, he is a tall guy so he gets a lot of bounce from the wicket. Having played with him in the last two seasons, I&nbsp;realised&nbsp;he is a brave boy," said Rahul during a virtual press conference on Thursday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

It has been two-three years of consistent performance wherever they play. However, Rahul returned to the Team India playing XI in the first ODI and roared back to form with an unbeaten 62 to power India to a mammoth score of 317 in 50 overs.&nbsp;

"I was confident, for a player to come this far, it's only self-belief that gets him this far. I have always been confident about who I am as a player and who I am as a person. It was never an issue of confidence and self-belief. Like I said, sometimes it's sport, you try everything that is possible and which is in your control, still, it does not go your way.&nbsp;You&nbsp;accept it and try to learn from the mistakes you have done. I was always confident, I knew in the nets and the practice sessions, I was batting well.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"If there was a real issue with my batting, then I probably would have been a little under-confident, scoring runs is important and it is everything for a player but for me, I also look at myself at training. If I am preparing well and I am hitting the ball well, my mind is in the right place. Most of the things were going well, just the number chart was not going my way, which is disappointing. When I open the batting, the team looks&nbsp;upto&nbsp;the openers to give them a solid start and score runs, but it never impacted my confidence," said KL Rahul during a virtual press conference on Thursday.&nbsp;

But what did Rahul do differently in the first ODI as compared to the T20I series? The swashbuckling right-handed batsman said that he didn't dwell into his thoughts much to avoid overthinking&nbsp;while adding that playing at a high level, every player&nbsp;goes&nbsp;through such a phase.&nbsp;

“Everybody goes through&nbsp;this;&nbsp;I did not do anything different. I was not too stressed, as a player, you are disappointed. Sitting on the bench for a while, I did not play for 3-3.5 months so I was really excited about playing the white-ball series. Every player in the team wants to do well, sometimes it does not happen, you have to accept it.&nbsp;

"I asked myself if I prepared well, and when I thought about it, I did everything right, after that, if I did not score runs, then it's fine, I accept that. Having said that, it does not mean that you do not feel disappointed. When you are playing at this level, you always want to perform, but you need to accept that it is not always going to go your way. When things were going right, I did not question my process so I did not want to sit back and overthink after four-five bad performances, I was doing most things right which was in my control,"&nbsp;Rahul explained.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Answering whether it's easier to start afresh in a new series, Rahul replied: "Like I said, the ODI format, playing at number five, I could take a little more time than I did maybe in T20s. Having spent a little time in the middle, having played a couple of good shots, the footwork got better. When I walked in, Shikhar was batting well. I knew when Krunal walked in, I&nbsp;realised&nbsp;we had to stitch a partnership together, when you stop thinking about your own personal game and when there is responsibility in front of you, you start thinking clearer, having spent 20-25 balls in the middle, I started to feel more confident."&nbsp;

India and England will lock horns for the second ODI in Pune on March 26. The Men in Blue lead the series 1-0.

IND vs ENG 2nd ODI: Lean patch in T20Is never impacted confidence, says KL Rahul

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) could offer Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises a stake in The Hundred teams and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) a share of Asian television rights in a bid to lure India's marquee players&nbsp;such as Virat Kohli&nbsp;into the new 100-ball format tournament.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Hundred is an upcoming cricket tournament set to be played in a new 100-ball format. The inaugural edition of the tournament is scheduled to begin on July 21 after suffering a postponement in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to the Telegraph, the ECB is ready to give BCCI a stake in the Asian television right based on how many Indian players participate in the tournament while also providing IPL franchises with a stake in the teams. Reportedly, BCCI and ECB had held talks when ECB chairman Ian Watmore and chief executive Tom Harrison were in Ahmedabad for the pink-ball Test in February.&nbsp;

Earlier in 2018, Indian captain Virat Kohli had talked about the hectic cricket schedule and how the commercial aspect of the game is taking over the quality of cricket. He had said that he doesn't want to be a testing sort of cricketer for any newly introduced format.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Gamers are used to taking control of Neymar in virtual football pitches, but the Brazilian star has found a new field to run wild on: the shoot'em up mega-hit "Fortnite".

Neymar's recruitment is part of a strategy by Epic Games to expand the universe of "Fortnite" beyond its kill-or-be-killed "Battle Royale" by wheeling in the sports, music and film worlds.

The footballer follows in the footsteps of US rapper Travis Scott, whose avatar performed five virtual concerts on "Fortnite" last year seen by 12 million players.

The game, which has 350 million users (more than the US population), has also hosted a "Short Nite" film festival and a "Party Royale" -- a virtual party with famous DJs.

"In a time like now, where getting together in person is more challenging, we think it's incredibly important to have these social connected experiences virtually," Nate Nanzer, head of global partnerships at Epic Games, told AFP.

"We definitely think of Fortnite as a platform for social connected experiences and not just the game."

Users have been able to put the kits of football teams such as Manchester City and Juventus on their avatars since the start of the year, but Neymar is the first athlete with an unlockable "player skin".

Nanzer said Neymar's selection made sense because the footballer is a fan of the game -- he streams himself playing "Fortnite" live on Twitch -- and has nearly 150 million Instagram followers.

<h2>- Meet me in the 'metaverse' -</h2>

"Fortnite" is not the only video game looking to broaden the format's horizons.

"Roblox", an online platform that lets users build their own games, has been a massive hit during the pandemic, with birthday parties, social get-togethers and even company meetings held there.

"It's the metaverse," said Julien Pillot, a researcher at leading French business school INSEEC.

The "metaverse", a term coined by sci-fi writer Neal Stephenson, refers to a shared online world in which users can more freely interact, hang out, spend money, consume media and potentially even work jobs.&nbsp;

Charles-Louis Planade, a video game expert with Midcap Partners, said the "Holy Grail" of creating a metaverse was not new for gaming, citing the massive multiplayer game "World of Warcraft" which struck a chord in the 2000s.

"What is new is that these video games have almost became a 'hub', where playing is one of the activities offered -- but not the only one," Planade said.&nbsp;

<h2>- The numbers game -</h2>

The metaverse dream also expands the ways that such games can rake in profits -- while "Fortnite" and "Roblox" are free, users can spend real money on virtual goods and services within the games.

It has also created new ways to advertise to an overwhelmingly young audience -- most of Roblox's 150 million monthly users are under 16.

Brands including Nike and Disney have already used the platforms, with the latter promoting the last Star Wars movie on "Roblox" in 2019.

Warner Brothers and DC meanwhile created a Wonder Woman game on Roblox to promote the superhero's last film, with US rapper Lil Nas X performing there.

And "Roblox" made its Wall Street debut earlier this month, listing on the New York Stock Exchange for a valuation of $46 billion -- more than four times that of video game giant Ubisoft.

Should traditional social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram be worried?

Researcher Pillot said that the game-playing element still excluded some audiences.

"For mass advertising contracts, you will never beat a Facebook (2.8 billion users) that caters for everyone, young and old. You cannot compete on the same audience level," he said.

But analyst Planade said "we're heading straight in that direction."

"Tomorrow everyone will be playing video games."

Neymar joins 'Fortnite' as video game universe expands

Pathum Nissanka's hundred on debut and Niroshan Dickwella's pugnacious 96 solidified Sri Lanka's outstanding second innings rearguard with a total of 476 that left the West Indies with the challenging victory target of 375 on the fourth day of the first Test on Wednesday.

Notwithstanding their remarkable successful chase of 395 on the last day of the first Test against Bangladesh in Chattogram six weeks earlier, the hosts face a daunting task at 34 for one overnight heading into Thursday's final day.

West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite will resume in partnership with Nkrumah Bonner after Vishwa Fernando prised out John Campbell via a catch to a rueful wicketkeeper Dickwella.

Nissanka, who lost overnight partner Dhananjaya de Silva in the first over of the morning, slowed to a crawl in the second session of the day but finally reached the coveted century landmark just before tea to join Brendon Kuruppu (who completed a double-century), Romesh Kaluwitharana and Thilan Samaraweera as the only Sri Lankans to score hundreds on Test debut.&nbsp;

Samaraweera was the last to achieve the landmark before Wednesday, getting to three figures in his first Test, against India in Colombo in 2001.

"I wasn't even aware of any records or anything like that. I just wanted to perform for the team," said the 22-year-old Nissanka speaking through an interpreter.&nbsp;

"Niroshan kept telling me for us to prolong the innings for as long as possible and get a big total to make sure the bowlers had enough runs to work with."

Nissanka and Dickwella dominated the first two sessions of the day, putting on 179 for the sixth wicket and frustrating a West Indies team that was fast running out of ideas and doing little to help their own cause.

Bonner dropped the simplest of catches at gully off fast-medium bowler Jason Holder when Dickwella was on 45.&nbsp;

He also enjoyed a slice of luck closing on the elusive century when a half-hearted appeal by Alzarri Joseph for a catch to the wicketkeeper down the leg-side was turned down by the presiding umpire.

Replays revealed that the batsman edged the ball but the West Indies had no course for review having exhausted their television referrals earlier in the day.

If it appeared then that Dickwella was destined for a maiden Test hundred in his 42nd match, his growing anticipation of the moment came to nothing as he was bowled by Kemar Roach playing a lazy shot at the start of the final session.

He had been struck on the back of the helmet in the fast bowler's previous over when the ball rolled onto the stumps but did not dislodge the bails.

Nissanka had already departed for 103, compiled in 341 minutes off 252 balls and including six fours, and the innings quickly subsided in the rush for quick runs.

Roach and off-spinner Rahkeem Cornwall claimed three wickets each.

West Indian spirits had been lifted at the start of the day when de Silva, on reaching an even 50, was comprehensively bowled by Joseph operating with the second new ball.

However the rest of the day belonged to the Sri Lankans who will believe they can end a run of four consecutive Test match defeats on the final day.

Nissanka, Dickwella star for Sri Lanka as Windies chase 375-run target

The Netherlands slumped to a dramatic 4-2 defeat by Turkey in their opening 2022 World Cup qualifier on Wednesday, while reigning champions France were held by Ukraine despite a brilliant Antoine Griezmann goal and Belgium came from behind to beat Wales.

European champions Portugal battled to a 1-0 victory over Azerbaijan, but 2018 World Cup runners-up Croatia lost 1-0 in Slovenia as they started their bid to reach the finals in Qatar.

In Istanbul, Turkey led 3-0 shortly after half-time through two Burak Yilmaz goals and a Hakan Calhanoglu strike, but substitutes Davy Klaassen and Luuk de Jong gave Frank de Boer's Dutchmen hope.

Yilmaz's wonderful free-kick sealed him a hat-trick and Turkey a crucial win, though, in a match between the two favourites to qualify from Group G.

"Very disappointing result, and also the way that result came about," De Boer told NOS TV.

The defeat was a dreadful start to the campaign for the Netherlands, who failed to qualify for either Euro 2016 or the 2018 World Cup, but are one of the fancied sides ahead of the delayed Euro 2020 finals this year.

France kicked off their title defence with a 1-1 draw against Ukraine at the Stade de France.

Griezmann curled a fine finish from outside the box into the top corner in the 19th minute to draw level with David Trezeguet in fourth place on France's all-time goalscoring list, with 34.

But Presnel Kimpembe put through his own net before the hour mark to draw Ukraine level.

The Paris Saint-Germain defender had a late chance to make amends, but headed too close to away goalkeeper Georgiy Bushchan.

"We need more accuracy and movement against these opponents," France coach Didier Deschamps told TF1. "Qualifying is a long haul and not a long, quiet river, it never has been."

The other game in Group D saw Finland and Bosnia and Herzegovina draw 2-2, with Teemu Pukki netting twice for the Finns in Helsinki.

"It left a bad taste in my mouth," said Pukki. "I'm a bit gutted we couldn't get the three points."

<h2>- Belgium see off Wales -</h2>

Belgium, the world's number-one-ranked side, fell behind early against Wales but fought back to outclass their opponents 3-1.

Harry Wilson scored an excellent 10th-minute opener for Wales in Leuven, but Kevin De Bruyne and Thorgan Hazard netted in the space of six minutes to put the hosts ahead before the half-hour mark.

Belgium's record goalscorer Romelu Lukaku wrapped up the points with a penalty 17 minutes from time, gaining the Red Devils a measure of revenge for their Euro 2016 quarter-final loss to Wales.

"It was important to start with a victory at home," said winger Thorgan Hazard. "It's always important to start qualifying well. We were a little scared during the first 15 minutes."

Roberto Martinez's men sit second in the early Group E table behind the Czech Republic, who thrashed Estonia 6-2 on neutral ground in Poland, with West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek scoring a hat-trick.

Portugal, who defend the title at Euro 2020 later this year, struggled in their Group A opener against Azerbaijan in Turin.

But Maksim Medvedev's own goal nine minutes before half-time was enough, despite Cristiano Ronaldo, on 102 international goals, failing to close the gap to Iranian Ali Daei's all-time record of 109.

"The game was under control. We needed to improve the finishing, but we ended up winning -- with an own goal, but maybe we deserved to have scored more," said Portugal coach Fernando Santos, after his 50th win in charge from 80 games.

Portugal's group rivals Serbia battled back to beat the Republic of Ireland 3-2, as Aleksandar Mitrovic came off the bench to grab a second-half double.

<h2>- 'Human rights, on and off pitch' -</h2>

Norway stars Erling Braut Haaland and Martin Odegaard donned t-shirts with the slogan 'Human rights, on and off the pitch' in support of migrant workers building World Cup venues in Qatar for the 2022 finals.

Haaland, national captain Odegaard, as well as teammates, wore the shirts when the national anthems were played before their 3-0 success in Gibraltar.

The Scandinavians sit ahead of Turkey in Group G.

Elsewhere, Russia, 2018 quarter-finalists on home soil, stuttered to a 3-1 win in Malta.

Also in Group H, Croatia were beaten by Sandi Lovric's early goal for Slovenia.

"Qualifying is a long haul and not a long, quiet river, it never has been." The other game in Group D saw Finland and Bosnia and Herzegovina draw 2-2, with Teemu Pukki netting twice for the Finns in Helsinki. "It left a bad taste in my mouth," said Pukki. "I'm a bit gutted we couldn't get the three points." - Belgium see off Wales - Belgium, the world's number-one-ranked side, fell behind early against Wales but fought back to outclass their opponents 3-1. We were a little scared during the first 15 minutes." Roberto Martinez's men sit second in the early Group E table behind the Czech Republic, who thrashed Estonia 6-2 on neutral ground in Poland, with West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek scoring a hat-trick. - 'Human rights, on and off pitch' - Norway stars Erling Braut Haaland and Martin Odegaard donned t-shirts with the slogan 'Human rights, on and off the pitch' in support of migrant workers building World Cup venues in Qatar for the 2022 finals.

Netherlands beaten by Turkey, France held by Ukraine in World Cup qualifiers

Mick Schumacher's famous name may have helped him to accelerate through motor racing's lower levels, but it will also add pressure when he makes his Formula One debut on Sunday.&nbsp;

Mick, son of seven-time world champion Michael, will drive for US team Haas in the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix.

Schumacher, 22, earned his chance by winning the Formula Three European championship in 2018 and the Formula Two title in 2020.

His famous name has helped make it easier for Haas to find funding, but the young German's longer-term career plan seems clear.

Mick is part of the academy at Ferrari, where his father won five of his seven world titles.

Haas and Ferrari each pay half of Mick Schumacher's salary and, if he proves himself, he seems destined to eventually race in the famous red of the Maranello-based company.

"The name Schumacher is a brand, but it is a brand linked to the first name Michael," Herve Bodinier, a sports marketing professional and Formula 1 expert, told AFP.

"Ferrari and the others are not patrons, Mick will have to write his own story."

A thick veil of mystery surrounds the current health of Michael Schumacher.

The 52-year-old has not been seen in public since a skiing accident in the French Alps in 2013, witnessed by Mick, left the Formula One legend with severe brain injuries.

Now, 15 years after his father last raced for Ferrari, Mick will bring one of the most famous names in motorsport back to Formula One.

The hype has been building for weeks.

According to a survey, 35 percent of Sky Germany's subscribers say they will watch more Formula One if Mick Schumacher is at the wheel.

The German broadcaster has based its entire pre-season advertising around the German, who turned 22 last Monday.

<h2>- Family footsteps -</h2>

"His arrival is already a boost for Formula One, his name is attracting a lot of attention, and the whole series is benefiting from it," admitted Stefano Domenicali, the Formula One boss who is close to the Schumacher family.

However, Schumacher has been warned that his surname carries extra pressure.

"It's not easy to be a 'son of'," 2016 world champion Nico Rosberg, who won the Formula One title 34 years after his father Keke Rosberg, told Sport1.

"At the beginning the media attention on him will be even bigger than on (defending champion) Lewis Hamilton."

Since his first laps in karting, the media have always taken an interest in Schumacher.

He came through the ranks of Formula Three and Two shielded by a management team who made it taboo for reporters to ask about his father's health.

"He has forged a shell, he has a good family and has turned his dramatic story into a strength," said Bodinier.

<h2>- "Give him time" -</h2>

Being a Schumacher has helped.

"His name certainly opens doors for him," said Ross Brawn, Formula One's managing director and close friend of the Schumacher family, "but it also puts a lot of pressure on him, without a doubt."

On the down side, the extra attention has the potential to rob Schumacher of the space and time needed to develop at the top level.

"He deserved this promotion. He has reached the level of a Formula One driver by his own strength, not because of his name," said Domenicali.

"Now we have to give him time to grow, to learn... and to follow a normal progression curve."
