Lorient midfielder Armand&nbsp;Lauriente&nbsp;scored one of the greatest free-kick goals of all-time against Nantes in Ligue 1.&nbsp;Lauriente's&nbsp;40-yard belter is being tipped as one of the Puskas Award contenders as the midfielder defied physics to net one of the finest free-kicks of all-time.&nbsp;

With Lorient 1-0 down in the 87th&nbsp;minute of the match against FC Nantes in Ligue 1,&nbsp;Lauriente&nbsp;was given a go at the free-kick from 40 yards out. While several of his team-mates were waiting in the box in anticipation that&nbsp;Lauriente&nbsp;would cross the ball into the box, they were left astonished by what followed.&nbsp;

The midfielder ran and shot the ball towards the goal. At first, it seemed like the ball was going to sail over the bar. The Nantes goal-keeper Alban Lafont was also positioned a few yards off his line, anticipating a cross. However, he had to adjust quickly as the ball started to dip&nbsp;and curve&nbsp;viciously&nbsp;in the final few&nbsp;metres&nbsp;of the shot.&nbsp;

The French youth international was left bamboozled as the ball nestled into the top corner of the net as&nbsp;Lauriente&nbsp;completed a breathtaking strike.&nbsp;

Lancashire Cricket on Monday announced the overseas signing of Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer for the 2021 Royal London Cup. Iyer will be playing for Lancashire in the month-long group stage of Royal London Cup 2021 and will arrive at the Old Trafford in Manchester on&nbsp;July 15.&nbsp;

Iyer's signing continues Lancashire's long association with Indian cricket with the likes of Farokh Engineer, Murali Kartik, Dinesh Mongia, VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly having played for the club in past.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Notably, Lancashire Cricket also became the first-ever English County club to have hosted a pre-season training camp in Mumbai in 2020.&nbsp;

Speaking after agreeing to join Lancashire for the 2021 Royal London Cup, Shreyas said: “Lancashire is a legendary name in English Cricket with a long-standing association with Indian Cricket. I am extremely humbled and&nbsp;honoured&nbsp;to carry the legacy forward of greats like Farokh Engineer, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman at Lancashire.&nbsp;

“Emirates Old Trafford is a world-class international stadium and I am looking forward to meeting my teammates and the supporters of the Club.”&nbsp;

Lancashire’s Director of Cricket, Paul Allott, added: “Shreyas is one of the shining lights of a new generation of Indian batsman and a leader, and we’re delighted that an opportunity to bring him to Emirates Old Trafford has presented itself.&nbsp;

“With the expectation that we will be fielding a younger side in this year’s Royal London Cup due to the Hundred, it was important that we brought in a top-order batsman with experience at the highest level to enhance our prospects in the tournament.&nbsp;

“Shreyas has experience of captaining in an IPL final as well as playing in top-level international fixtures, so his on-field skills, and ability to remain calm in high-pressure situations, will serve our young squad well this summer.&nbsp;

India's Shreyas Iyer signs for English County club Lancashire

Virat Kohli on Monday explained why he will be opening the batting for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. Kohli had opened the batting with Rohit Sharma in the fifth T20I against England in Ahmedabad as the duo stitched a 94-run partnership to put India in a strong position. India went on to defeat England to seal the T20I series 3-2 and the Men in Blue would be hoping to carry the good run of form in the ODIs against England, commencing Tuesday in Pune.&nbsp;

In IPL 2016, Kohli had opened the batting for RCB and ended up having his best-ever season in the T20 tournament.&nbsp;He had amassed 973 runs in 16 games at an average of 81.08 and a strike rate of 152.03. However, since then the swashbuckling batsman has continued to bat at number three&nbsp;in the cash-rich tournament.

"Firstly, the combination that plays on the field, the selectors do not have any role in that just like the management does not have any role in who gets selected. Secondly, as Rohit mentioned it was a strategic move, but we did enjoy batting together in the last T20I. We did enjoy our partnership and we saw the effects of us batting together and knowing what we can do to the opposition if we bat throughout. It is not a guarantee that it is going to be continued in the future," said Virat during a virtual press conference on Monday.&nbsp;

Kohli further said that he will open in IPL to understand his role as an opener while opening up a slot for in-form batsman Suryakumar Yadav.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"I am going to open in the IPL to keep all options open. I have batted at three, four and now I need to understand my role as an opener which I have done successfully in the past in T20 cricket so that I provide an option to open up a slot for someone like Surya, if he can continue to bat like that, I should be open to playing any kind of role that the team requires me to. We will have a conversation about this when we get closer to the T20 World Cup. It would be interesting to see how I go about my job as an opener in the IPL,"&nbsp;the Indian skipper added.&nbsp;

When asked whether ODIs have come out of nowhere in the year where the side is preparing for the T20 World Cup, Kohli said: "Look, it is a difficult one. Scheduling is something that is not in our control. For us, in international games, every game is important and every game has value. It is an opportunity to represent your team and for us, that remains the sole focus. Yes, along the way as I have said in the past, scheduling and workload are something everyone will be very aware of. In today's day and age, you never know when restrictions are going to come in and even in the future, you might have to continue playing in bubbles.&nbsp;

"It is important to consider how much cricket you are playing, it is just not about the physical side of things, it is mental side as well. Players need to be spoken to and consulted with all around. Otherwise, it is going to be a case of whoever can last plays and if not, some other player replaces that person and I do not think it is healthy for cricket system and culture going forward," said Kohli.&nbsp;&nbsp;

England captain Eoin Morgan on Monday said that the medical team would&nbsp;decide whether express speedster Jofra Archer would return to India to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021, scheduled to start on April 9. Archer's elbow injury means that the pacer will miss the three-match ODI series against India with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) also ruling Archer out of the initial phase of IPL 2021.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"To be honest, I cannot give a medical opinion. We know the situation with his elbow, it has progressively gotten worse. We know that it needs investigation, only time will tell. He has given his heart and soul to us since he has been involved so we will give him full attention in order to try and bring the best result possible," said Morgan during a virtual press conference&nbsp;on Monday.&nbsp;

"It all depends on the outcome of the investigation that the medical team will do (Archer's return to India for IPL 2021). They will determine the best rehabilitation&nbsp;programme&nbsp;coming back and we will go from there. We fully trust our medical&nbsp;team,&nbsp;they have outstanding regarding player welfare and player rehabilitation. The trust is always there," he added.&nbsp;&nbsp;

One of the biggest positives for the Indian cricket team from the recently concluded five-match T20I series against England has been the comeback of Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The veteran seamer, returning back to the team after a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to injury, not only bowled some fantastic spells but also&nbsp;helped India win the final match to clinch the series 3-2.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Former Indian batsman Gautam Gambhir has lauded skipper Virat Kohli for&nbsp;handling Bhuvneshwar Kumar to perfection while also heaping praise for giving the ball to the veteran seamer in the 13th&nbsp;over of the match – one which changed the course of the run-chase by England.&nbsp;

India ended up scoring a massive 224/8 in 20 overs in the fifth T20I at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. While Bhuvneshwar started the rout, with the ball, by dismissing Jason Roy in the first over, the 130-run partnership between Jos Buttler and Dawid Malan kept everyone at the edge of their seats.&nbsp;

Kohli handed over the ball to&nbsp;Bhuvneswar&nbsp;in the 13th&nbsp;over and the veteran seamer started to set up Buttler with some slower ones before the England batsman skied it in the fifth ball of the match. England's run-chase derailed after Buttler's dismissal as the visitors conceded the match by 36 runs.&nbsp;

"It was an unbelievable over. And good captaincy from Virat Kohli as well to bring him on in the 13th over. Because the run chase was absolutely on. He can just mix up his deliveries," Gambhir&nbsp;told&nbsp;ESPNCricinfo.&nbsp;

"I remember one reverse sweep which Jos Buttler missed, it was just a quicker one, and a yorker, and one wide outside the off-stump. He used all the variations he had to the best of his abilities, and it was the turning point of the game," Gambhir added.&nbsp;

The former India batsman further explained&nbsp;why&nbsp;Bhuvneshwar&nbsp;is so successful with the new ball.&nbsp;

"I think it's difficult to play swing bowlers as compared to seam bowlers in T20 cricket. Because with seam bowlers you can actually see the line and hit through the line. But if its swinging both ways, you would have to wait a little longer. And that is why Bhuvneshwar Kumar is so dangerous with the new ball. He can swing the ball both ways," he said.&nbsp;

But there are people like Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who are very useful and always go under the radar. But these are just as important as these guys.&nbsp;&nbsp;

One of the biggest positives for the Indian cricket team from the recently concluded five-match T20I series against England has been the comeback of Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

One of the biggest positives for the Indian cricket team from the recently concluded five-match T20I series against England has been the comeback of Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The veteran seamer, returning back to the team after a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to injury, not only bowled some fantastic spells but also helped India win the final match to clinch the series 3-2. Former Indian batsman Gautam Gambhir has lauded skipper Virat Kohli for handling Bhuvneshwar Kumar to perfection while also heaping praise for giving the ball to the veteran seamer in the 13th over of the match – one which changed the course of the run-chase by England. India ended up scoring a massive 224/8 in 20 overs in the fifth T20I at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. While Bhuvneshwar started the rout, with the ball, by dismissing Jason Roy in the first over, the 130-run partnership between Jos Buttler and Dawid Malan kept everyone at the edge of their seats. Kohli handed over the ball to Bhuvneswar in the 13th over and the veteran seamer started to set up Buttler with some slower ones before the England batsman skied it in the fifth ball of the match. 'Good captaincy from Virat Kohli...': Gautam Gambhir mentions 'turning point' of 5th T20I vs England

Leicester sent Manchester United crashing out of the FA Cup as Kelechi Iheanacho's double sealed a 3-1 win, while Chelsea will face Manchester City in the semi-finals after beating Sheffield United on Sunday.

Brendan Rodgers' side can look forward to meeting Southampton in their first FA Cup semi-final since 1982 thanks to Iheanacho's predatory finishing at the King Power Stadium.

He put Leicester ahead in Rodgers' 100th game in charge before Mason Greenwood equalised late in the first half.

Youri Tielemans restored Leicester's lead and Nigeria striker Iheanacho wrapped up only their second win over United in 23 years and their first since 2014.

Leicester, who have never won the FA Cup and last reached the final in 1969, will head to Wembley to face Southampton in April.

"I'm obviously delighted. It was a great performance. Every aspect of the game was complete," Rodgers said.

"We showed courage to play against one of Europe's greatest teams. I told the players they were three games from history. Now it's two."

United's limp exit ended their run of 29 away games without defeat in all domestic competitions since losing at Liverpool in January 2020.

Without a trophy since the 2017 Europa League, that competition is now their last realistic chance of winning the first silverware of boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's reign.

"We didn't have the spark but it's understandable. We played every three days and been on a great run. It just caught up with us, all the games and travels," Solskjaer said.

"Thursday in Milan was a big night and took a lot of out of us physically. We didn't have the extra zip, authority and confidence today.

"We've got the Europa League and Premier League to concentrate on. Yes we would've liked to go to Wembley but now all the focus is on the games we do have."

After reaching the Europa League quarter-finals with a win at AC Milan in midweek, Solskjaer made five changes and United's reshuffled line-up never looked comfortable.

Fred paid the price for a woeful mistake in the 24th minute.

When Harry Maguire played a risky ball out to Fred on the edge of the United area, the Brazilian's panicked response was a weak back-pass towards United keeper Dean Henderson.

Iheanacho nipped in to intercept it before rounding Henderson and tapping into the empty net to make it eight goals in his last nine games.

United equalised in the 38th minute when Pogba's cross was cleverly dummied by Donny van de Beek and Greenwood slammed his shot past Kasper Schmeichel from 12 yards.

Lacklustre United were still out of sorts and Tielemans put Leicester back in front in the 52nd minute.

The Belgian midfielder advanced unchecked as United backed off and he took full advantage with a fine low finish from the edge of the area.

Iheanacho killed off United in the 78th minute with a clinical header from Marc Albrighton's free-kick.

<h2>- Chelsea set up City clash -</h2>

At Stamford Bridge, Thomas Tuchel's much-changed side were below their best but still earned a potentially thrilling showdown with quadruple chasers Manchester City by beating Sheffield United 2-0.

Oliver Norwood's 24th-minute own goal, the midfielder turning Ben Chilwell's shot into the net, put them on course for the last four.

Hakim Ziyech came off the bench to finish Chilwell's pass in second-half stoppage time.

The Blues are back in the FA Cup semi-finals for a fourth time in the last five seasons after losing last year's final against Arsenal.

Chelsea won the last of the club's eight FA Cups under Antonio Conte in 2018.

"We had a good first half where we controlled everything. We lost control in the second half. After 14 consecutive matches I could feel we were tired and we made many little mistakes," Tuchel said.&nbsp;

Since replacing the sacked Frank Lampard in January, Tuchel is unbeaten in 14 games in all competitions.

Chelsea have kept 12 clean sheets in that period, shutting out the opposition in their last seven matches.

Leicester rock Man Utd to reach FA Cup semis, Chelsea face Man City in last four

Juventus' hopes of winning a 10th consecutive Serie A title took another blow on Sunday with a 1-0 home loss to lowly Benevento as AC Milan closed the gap on leaders Inter Milan with a hard-fought 3-2 win at Fiorentina.

Adolfo Gaich scored the only goal in the 69th minute at Juve's Allianz Stadium following a bad pass across his own penalty area by midfielder Arthur.

Andrea Pirlo's side stay third, 10 points behind Inter whose match against Sassuolo was postponed because of a Covid-19 outbreak at the league leaders.

Second-placed Milan are four points ahead of the reigning champions after they recovered from their Europa League exit to Manchester United by cutting the deficit to Inter to six points with a 3-2 win over Fiorentina.

For Juve, who have 11 games left to play this season, it was another blow after being dumped out of the Champions League at the last 16 stage by Porto earlier this month.

"We performed poorly, in every aspect," said Pirlo.&nbsp;

"We have to continue to believe in the title. The objective does not change, it's the mindset which must."

Serie A top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo, who has netted 23 times in the league this season, drew a blank in Turin a week after reaching 770 goals to beat Pele's all-time mark of 767, with Benevento goalkeeper Lorenzo Montipo pulling off a string of fine saves.

<h2>- Zlatan hails 'important' win -</h2>

Benevento broke the deadlock following Arthur's horrendous pass across the face of goal towards Danilo, which allowed Gaich to pounce and score his second goal in five games since arriving on loan from CSKA Moscow.

Montipo denied Ronaldo twice late on as Juve pushed for a leveller, first from close range with 10 minutes to go and again in the final minute, with Danilo sending the subsequent rebound over the bar.

Benevento now sit seven points away from the drop zone in 16th.

In Florence, Zlatan Ibrahimovic returned to the starting line-up for Milan for the first time in over three weeks and scored after nine minutes following Simon Kjaer's ball over the top.

But Milan needed Brahim Diaz's 57th-minute strike and a Hakan Calhanoglu winner with quarter of an hour to go to snatch victory.

A curling Erick Pulgar free-kick had pulled Fiorentina level with Franck Ribery then putting the hosts ahead six minutes after the break.

"It was very important to win like this after the defeat against Manchester United," said Ibrahimovic, who at 39 became the oldest player to score 15 goals in a single Serie A season.&nbsp;

<h2>- Mertens century -</h2>

Atalanta bounced back after their Champions League exit to Real Madrid with a 2-0 win at Hellas Verona to consolidate fourth place, equal on points with Juventus.

Ruslan Malinovskyi scored the first from the penalty spot after a Federico Dimarco handball in the 33rd minute in Verona.

Duvan Zapata added a second before the break, after an earlier effort hit the post, the Colombian sweeping the ball past Marco Silvestri into an empty net, as Verona fell to a third successive defeat to stay ninth.

Atalanta are two points ahead of Napoli who beat Champions League rivals Roma 2-0 at the Stadio Olimpico thanks to a Dries Mertens brace.

Mertens curled in the opener from a free-kick in the 27th minute and nodded in a Matteo Politano cross seven minutes later to bring his tally to 100 Serie A goals since joining Napoli in 2013.

Roma are the only Italian side left in Europe and showed signs of fatigue after their Europa League trip to Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk on Thursday.

"Perhaps we don't have the mentality required to compete against these sort of teams," said Roma coach Paulo Fonseca, whose side have struggled for results against Serie A's top teams.&nbsp;

"In the first half the team looked to be without courage ... When we are afraid of losing, or afraid of playing, it all becomes a lot harder."

Lazio recovered from their Champions League elimination to Bayern Munich with a 1-0 win at Udinese thanks to an Adam Marusic goal.

Simone Inzaghi's side are seventh but now just one point behind their city rivals with a game in hand.

Juve's title hopes rocked as Milan keep pressure on Inter

Toshiko Ishii spent $180,000 renovating her traditional Japanese inn in expectation of a flood of tourists for the Tokyo Olympics, but now she won't be hosting a single overseas fan.

After Olympics organisers announced a ban on spectators from abroad, those working in Japan's tourism industry are counting their losses.

Experts say the impact will be limited compared to the much larger blow brought by the pandemic, adding there is hope that tourism will rebound as life moves towards normality.

But it is a big setback for an industry that had high hopes for the Games after a dizzying upswing in business during the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

"I am guessing foreign visitors won't be allowed until at least September. You have to look ahead and plan ahead to run a business," said Ishii.

"If you react emotionally at every turn of events, then you cannot sustain yourself," she added.

In preparation for the influx, Ishii doubled the size of her hotel's restaurant and upgraded the antique decor and kitchen.

"I was thinking, 'Next year with the Olympics, everything is going to be going up and up'," she told AFP. "Now all of a sudden everything has evaporated."

Bolstered by the Rugby World Cup, Japan welcomed a record 31.9 million foreign visitors in 2019, and was on track to achieve its goal of 40 million in 2020.

But last March strict virus border rules were imposed, all but barring foreign tourists, and the Tokyo Olympics were postponed for a year.

<h2>- 'Major economic loss' -</h2>

Yui Oikawa, a manager at Tokyo Rickshaw, which operates tours in the historic Asakusa district, had assumed the Olympics, now starting in July, would bring roaring sales and customers from around the world.

"I was sad and disappointed... but you cannot stand still," he said, saying his company is implementing strict sanitation measures to keep domestic customers coming.

"We are looking at this period as a time to build up our strength," added Oikawa, saying that staff were working on their customer pitches and knowledge of the area.

Organisers hoped to sell around 630,000 tickets outside Japan for the Games. Japan's government hoped the event might bring 600,000 overseas visitors to the country.

But the boost from Olympic visitors is often overestimated, analysts say. Their spending would probably have totalled 95 billion yen ($870 million), equivalent to 0.02 percent of Japan's GDP, research firm Capital Economics said in a November estimate.

A decision on whether to limit domestic fans has not yet been made, but crowd restrictions and the exclusion of foreign fans could mean losses of around 200 billion yen ($1.8 billion), according to Takahide Kiuchi, an executive economist at Nomura Research Institute.

"That is not big enough to sway the Japanese economy, but it still is certainly a major economic loss," he wrote in a report.

<h2>- Rooms at the inn -</h2>

The world's third largest economy is looking to other ways to grow this year, from exports to government stimulus measures, after a GDP contraction of 4.8 percent in coronavirus-hit 2020.

The tourism drought looks set to continue, even after the end of a virus state of emergency which included early closing for bars and restaurants.

Domestic travel ticked up in the second half of 2020 thanks to a controversial government campaign that ended in late December as infections rose.

Polls show most in Japan back the ban on foreign fans, and economists say the country should be looking to increased consumption for economic growth as the pandemic wanes.

Meanwhile, the tourism industry can do little more than hope for better days ahead.

"You cannot blame this on anyone," said Hideyuki Sato, a senior director at the Japan Ryokan and Hotel Association.

"Once this ends and travel resumes, we believe that there will be strong international demand for tourism to Japan," he told AFP.

Inn owner Ishii is keeping busy learning recipes and sharing her new culinary creations online with regular clients abroad.

She's dependent on public loans to stay afloat, and her hopes for the future are tempered by anxiety about her finances and whether tourism will recover.

"I'll work hard to pay off what I borrowed, but worry about what may happen after that."

'Everything evaporated' - Olympics' overseas fan ban hits Japan tourism

Lee Zii Jia was hailed as a "hero" Monday after winning the All England Open and igniting Malaysia's hopes of success at the Tokyo Olympics, even without retired legend Lee Chong Wei.

The young Malaysian star defeated Denmark's Viktor Axelsen 30-29, 20-22, 21-9 Sunday to win the All England, one of the sport's most prestigious tournaments, for the first time.&nbsp;

On his way to victory, the 22-year-old also beat two-time world champion Kento Momota, who was returning to international action after being injured in a car crash in Malaysia last year.&nbsp;

"Well done Lee Zii Jia! You are a national hero," Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin posted on Facebook.&nbsp;

"Use this victory as a catalyst to work harder and to become greater in future."

The Star newspaper praised 10th-ranked Lee's victory as a "smashing breakthrough on the international stage", and declared: "A new star is born".

Lee Zii Jia was hailed as a "hero" Monday after winning the All England Open and igniting Malaysia's hopes of success at the Tokyo Olympics, even without retired legend Lee Chong Wei. The young Malaysian star defeated Denmark's Viktor Axelsen 30-29, 20-22, 21-9 Sunday to win the All England, one of the sport's most prestigious tournaments, for the first time. On his way to victory, the 22-year-old also beat two-time world champion Kento Momota, who was returning to international action after being injured in a car crash in Malaysia last year. "Well done Lee Zii Jia! You are a national hero," Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin posted on Facebook. "Use this victory as a catalyst to work harder and to become greater in future." The Star newspaper praised 10th-ranked Lee's victory as a "smashing breakthrough on the international stage", and declared: "A new star is born". Manchester United were paired with Spanish side Granada in Friday's draw for the quarter-finals of the Europa League, while Arsenal will take on Slavia Prague.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's United, who beat AC Milan in the last 16, are due to play away in the first leg on April 8 but it remains to be seen where that match will take place.

The Old Trafford club faced Spanish opponents in Real Sociedad in the last 32 but the first leg of that tie was moved to Turin in Italy because of restrictions on travel from the UK to Spain as a result of the pandemic.

Granada are in Europe for the first time after finishing seventh in La Liga last season. The team from southern Spain notably beat PSV Eindhoven away in the group stage and eliminated Napoli in the last 32 before defeating Solskjaer's old club Molde of Norway in the round of 16.

Granada coach Diego Martinez has won the Europa League before, during his time as an assistant coach at Sevilla.

Meanwhile, Ajax will face Roma with the winners of that quarter-final playing either United or Granada in the last four. United beat Ajax in the 2017 Europa League final.

Arsenal are set to host Slavia in the first leg of their quarter-final and will be wary of the runaway Czech league leaders who have eliminated Leicester City and Scottish champions Rangers in the last two rounds.

However if the Gunners get through they could face their former coach Unai Emery in the semi-finals.

Emery's Villarreal will take on Dinamo Zagreb, last-16 conquerors of Tottenham Hotspur, in the other quarter-final.

Emery took Arsenal to the final of the Europa League in 2019, when they lost to Chelsea in Baku.

The final of this season's competition is set to be played in the Polish city of Gdansk on May 26.

Technology&nbsp;was introduced in the world of sports to cut-off human errors&nbsp;and take the pressure off the officials. While the goal-line technology in football and ultra-edge&nbsp;in cricket have helped the referees and umpires massively&nbsp;in&nbsp;marginal calls, the implementation of VAR (football) and Decision Review System (cricket) have left the fans&nbsp;with more questions&nbsp;than answers about both sports.&nbsp;

In football, fans and players have witnessed crucial goals ruled out due to off-sides wherein&nbsp;the VAR decided to take the edge of the boots, arm-pits and whatnot,&nbsp;into account.&nbsp;In cricket, there have been debates on 'umpire's call’ and 'soft signals'.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to ICC, "soft signal is the visual communication by the bowler's end umpire to the third umpire (accompanied by additional information via two-way radio where necessary) of his/her initial on-field decision prior to initiating an Umpire Review."&nbsp;

In 2018, Steve Smith suffered a controversial dismissal during the third ODI against England in Sydney after Jos Buttler claimed a low catch off Mark Wood. The then-Australian captain didn't mince his words&nbsp;as he said he's not a big fan of the soft signal.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"I'm not sure I'm a big fan of the ruling with the soft signal. That's obviously the ruling at the moment and it's hard to overturn anything," Smith&nbsp;had&nbsp;said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"We've seen a few this summer that have been pretty similar and if the fielder goes up and actually&nbsp;celebrates,&nbsp;they usually get given out and if you're a bit apprehensive of what's&nbsp;happened,&nbsp;they normally get given not out.&nbsp;It's hard for them to overturn the decision. I'd actually like for the third umpire to have to make the decision whether it's out or not. Just them having to do it, if that makes sense."&nbsp;

Skip to 2021, the cricketing&nbsp;world witnessed a similar incident when Suryakumar Yadav lapped the ball to deep square-leg as Dawid Malan appeared to have plucked a stunner. The on-field umpires discussed and referred the decision to the third-umpire while giving the 'soft-signal' as out. The slow-motion replays suggested that the ball had touched the ground in between Malan's fingers.&nbsp;&nbsp;

However, the third-umpire, after checking a couple of angles, said that there was no conclusive evidence to overturn the on-field call. Suryakumar Yadav departed after a blistering knock but at a time when his knock should have become the talking point, fans and pundits debated the controversial call.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<img alt="Dawid Malan catch" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="a7fc0cbb-e224-413a-a7b0-0a98761d403b" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/Malan.JPG" />

Indian skipper Virat Kohli, during the post-match presentation, asked why can't&nbsp;there&nbsp;be an&nbsp;'I don't know' call from the on-field umpire. Kohli had a fair point as the on-field umpire was standing approximately 60-70&nbsp;metres&nbsp;away from the point where the catch by Malan was taken&nbsp;and it is humanly impossible to spot a close catch from that distance.&nbsp;

“There was an instance during the Test series when I was next to Jinks and he clearly caught the ball but he wasn't sure so we went upstairs. If it is a half and half effort and the fielder is in doubt, there is no way the umpire from the square leg can see it clearly. The soft signal becomes that important and it becomes tricky,” Kohli quipped.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“I don't know why there can't be an 'I don't know' call with the umpires as well. It is similar to the umpire's call as well. These are decisions that can change the course of the game, especially in these big games. We were on the receiving side today, and tomorrow it could be some other team. You want these ironed out and keep the game really simple and linear. It isn't ideal in high-pressure games and we want a lot of clarity on the field,” the Indian captain added.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Everyone agrees that umpiring (in cricket) and refereeing (in football) is tough ask for a human body and eye. And that is why technology has been introduced – to cut-off the human errors and to&nbsp;ease the pressure off the umpires. But as things stand, the usage of technology is complicating the game more than ever.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The&nbsp;fingers are not pointed towards the umpires here, the simple question being asked is if the players and officials are adapting to technology then why can't the rules be tweaked to make the implementation of technology much easier and less complicated.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<img alt="Suryakumar Yadav out" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="66a81946-20b0-4a72-a9cc-e0f427472332" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/000_96A6MB.jpg" />

It is not something that the MCC – the guardian of the Laws of the game - hasn't discussed at all. In early 2021, the MCC&nbsp;World Cricket committee&nbsp;had discussed changes to 'soft signals’&nbsp;for catches taken outside the 30-yard circle, albeit with no conclusion.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“The committee felt that the soft-signal system worked well for catches within the 30-yard fielding circle, but that catches near the boundary often left the umpires unsighted. It was proposed that, for such catches, the on-field umpires could give an ‘unsighted’ instruction to the TV umpire, rather than the more explicit soft-signal of Out or Not out,” the&nbsp;MCC statement&nbsp;read.&nbsp;

Pundits&nbsp;and cricketers&nbsp;such as VVS Laxman, Graeme Swann, Dinesh Karthik, Mike Atherton, Virender Sehwag, Wasim Jaffer&nbsp;among many others have questioned the 'soft-signal' and the decision taken during the fourth T20I between India and England in Ahmedabad.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Football fans have already been infuriated by the VAR and some of the marginal (read controversial) calls taken for off-sides and hand-balls. So much so that there have been calls to dismantle the VAR and go back to the basics.&nbsp;&nbsp;

For cricket, while there is a fair shout that technology isn't 100 per cent fool-proof when it comes to ball-tracking and LBW calls with 'umpire's call' coming into the play, 'soft-signal'&nbsp;for tight catches is simply ruining the fun and diverting the attention from the cricketing action itself.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Third-umpire Virender Sharma didn't help his case by giving Washington Sundar out, when fielder Adil Rashid's foot appeared to have touched the boundary&nbsp;padding, the soft-signal by on-field umpire was again out – for an incident that again happened 60-70&nbsp;metres&nbsp;away from the umpire.&nbsp;The officials were just going by the rules – to give a judgement on the appeal.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<img alt="Adil Rashid catch (Pic: Hotstar)" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="a890481f-22b7-48d4-a733-d274d77a29e2" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/EwxdLZdVcAkMJUe.jpg" />

The term 'soft-signal' consists of the word 'soft' but as the laws are designed, it is definitely making&nbsp;life&nbsp;'hard'&nbsp;for the officials. Neither it is giving the on-field umpires the power to make a one-time call nor it is providing the third umpire with the power to counter the decision&nbsp;with all the technology in the world available.&nbsp;&nbsp;

At a time when players are adapting to technology, it is high time for the guardians of&nbsp;Law to adapt to it as well. The world is evolving and so is cricket. At a time when the gentlemen's game is gaining the eyeballs of more countries, it is in everyone's best interest that the rules are kept as simple as possible.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The rules need to be tweaked now or it could result in ICC World Cup 2019 final-like incident&nbsp;where the match was decided on 'boundary count’ - a rule that was scrapped after a couple of months.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The question remains, will the MCC&nbsp;World Cricket committee act now or will it wait for another World Cup '19 final like incident to happen?&nbsp;Remember, technology was introduced to make life simpler not to make it even more complicated.&nbsp;

Technology was introduced in the world of sports to cut-off human errors and take the pressure off the officials. While the goal-line technology in football and ultra-edge in cricket have helped the referees and umpires massively in marginal calls, the implementation of VAR (football) and Decision Review System (cricket) have left the fans with more questions than answers about both sports.

Personally, and do bear in mind that as a bowler I thought everything was out, I think that was a stinking decision. — Graeme Swann (@Swannyg66) March 18, 2021 × ALSO READ: What Rishabh Pant did against Anderson, Archer is outrageous, say Dilshan and Maharoof Third-umpire Virender Sharma didn't help his case by giving Washington Sundar out, when fielder Adil Rashid's foot appeared to have touched the boundary padding, the soft-signal by on-field umpire was again out – for an incident that again happened 60-70 metres away from the umpire. The officials were just going by the rules – to give a judgement on the appeal. The term 'soft-signal' consists of the word 'soft' but as the laws are designed, it is definitely making life 'hard' for the officials. Neither it is giving the on-field umpires the power to make a one-time call nor it is providing the third umpire with the power to counter the decision with all the technology in the world available. At a time when players are adapting to technology, it is high time for the guardians of Law to adapt to it as well. The world is evolving and so is cricket. At a time when the gentlemen's game is gaining the eyeballs of more countries, it is in everyone's best interest that the rules are kept as simple as possible. The rules need to be tweaked now or it could result in ICC World Cup 2019 final-like incident where the match was decided on 'boundary count’ - a rule that was scrapped after a couple of months. The question remains, will the MCC World Cricket committee act now or will it wait for another World Cup '19 final like incident to happen? Remember, technology was introduced to make life simpler not to make it even more complicated.

Tweak the rules or else cricket's 'soft-signal' will end up as football's 'VAR'

Indian skipper Virat Kohli on Thursday said that the on-field umpires should have the option to say "I don't know" in a TV referral after a debate erupted over a catch by England's Dawid Malan which resulted in the dismissal of Suryakumar Yadav in&nbsp;the fourth T20I at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.&nbsp;

Suryakumar Yadav, who played a flamboyant knock of 57, was given out by the third-umpire following a controversial catch taken by Malan in the deep. The replays suggested that the ball had touched the ground but third umpire Virender Sharma&nbsp;thought it was inconclusive and upheld the on-field umpire's 'soft-signal' of out.&nbsp;

"When there's a half-and-half effort the soft signal becomes more important. I don't know why there can't be an 'I don't know' call for the umpires," Kohli said on the decision after his&nbsp;India's eight-run win.&nbsp;

After a slow start, India Legends skipper Sachin Tendulkar has hit fifth gear going into the business end of the ongoing Road Safety World Series in Raipur. While he hit a 37-ball 60 in the last group-stage game against South Africa Legends, he smashed a 42-ball 65 in the semi-final against West Indies. But the maestro says it has not been easy returning to the crease as the body refuses to listen to the heart at times.

Speaking to ANI, Tendulkar threw light on the highly-competitive action in the tournament, the message he wants to pass to the citizens when it comes to maintaining road safety and his take on the ever-present debate on whether experienced or youngsters should be backed to play for the country.

Videos have surfaced of Tendulkar undergoing sessions with the team physios as he plies his trade for India Legends in the Road Safety World Series and the Master Blaster makes no bones about the fact that the body is not getting any younger. But he does wish to thank the physios for preparing him for matches.

"Body, it has not been easy. Even before, I got here to participate in the tournament, while preparing, I hurt my back and that kept me out for about 10 days before I could get back to it very slowly. We have two physios Vaibhav Daga and Saif. Both have really helped because I have had problems, the back problems and knee. The forearms also went into spasm, needed needles to relax them. Those kind of things are continuing to happen, that are part and parcel. Number of players are having niggles and injuries here and there, but they are happy to be here for a good cause," he smiled.

Road safety is a cause very close to Tendulkar`s heart and the legend says that the reaction from the people has been nothing short of excellent and he wishes for people to show more patience while on the road and try and avoid taking rash calls whether while riding a bike or driving a car. "We are here for a cause and people are taking notice of what we are looking to do. The reaction has been very good, the crowds have responded brilliantly. I have always said this that when people react this way then it`s the best tonic for any athlete. The appreciation transpires into making something special on the field.

"It has actually happened because a number of legends go out there and play some spectacular cricket. People are enjoying, and it gives all of us an opportunity to relive those moments. Earlier, when we played actively, it just allowed us to do that. Here, I would want to thank the six teams for taking the time out to spread this message, this is important," he pointed.

Elaborating further on the need to be safe on the road, Tendulkar said: "Every four minutes we are losing lives in India. While people are riding two-wheelers, 50 per cent of the accidents are happening in the age group of 18-35 because of not wearing helmets. You know number of lives are lost because we are not doing the basic things. Pillions riders don`t wear helmets. The drivers and passengers choose not to wear seat belts when driving a car.

"Life is precious, one cannot because of carelessness, put life in danger or someone else`s life in danger. That`s why I feel patience is required. When we were small, we would have piggybanks where we would collect our pocket money and save. Similarly, if we show little bit of patience every day and allow elderly people to cross roads, honk less and do these little things, that is a piggybank of blessings. Every time you are helping visually impaired or elders to cross the road, you are earning blessings and all you have to do is stop for five seconds. These small things can really change our mindset, it is really important that we decide to every day fill our piggybank with blessings.

"Any talk with Tendulkar is incomplete without discussing Indian cricket and with the T20 World Cup coming up later in the year, debates have once again started on whether youngsters should be given a go with an eye on the showpiece event. The maestro feels that selectors must pick the best XI irrespective of age.

"One thing I would like to clarify here is that it is not just about picking youngsters. It is about picking capable players, you are talking about the Indian cricket team, age should not be criteria. It is about what you are able to deliver and that is what matters, not age. If somebody is able to perform and may not be a young cricketer, but if you are able to perform you should be playing for India.

"Talking about youngsters, if you are able to perform then he rightfully deserves it. But if he is not able to perform, then maybe there are options you can look at. It is just not about age, it is a misconception that you should promote youngsters. I feel we should be picking our best 11. We should be picking our best 14-15 member squad and the best balance is known to the selection committee and it should be left to them," he pointed.

Two guys who have managed to impress in the ongoing T20I series against England are Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan. Tendulkar believes playing top-quality bowlers in the Indian Premier League has readied the youngsters for the tough challenges on the international stage.

"As far as Suryakumar and Ishan are concerned, they both have done really well, they have not looked out of place at all and there is a reason for that. They played against all these guys a number of times. Yesterday, one of the commentators said that Surya has played against Archer and Stokes like as good as playing against Rajasthan Royals.

"For us, when I went to Pakistan and Australia, I was playing all those bowlers for the first time and that was at international level, so here the beauty is that they have played against top bowlers in the IPL and then playing against them for India, it is a big difference, you know what to expect from them and that is what has happened. That is the beauty of our structure and we can noticeably see that our bench strength is really good," he explained.

While he hit a 37-ball 60 in the last group-stage game against South Africa Legends, he smashed a 42-ball 65 in the semi-final against West Indies.

ALSO READ: India name Suryakumar Yadav, Prasidh Krishna for England ODIs - Check full squad Elaborating further on the need to be safe on the road, Tendulkar said: "Every four minutes we are losing lives in India.

Pick best XI for India, age should not be criteria: Sachin Tendulkar

JSW-GMR co-owned IPL franchise Delhi Capitals on Friday revealed the season’s official playing jersey in a unique ceremony in the presence of fans. The franchise, that believes&nbsp;in a ‘Fans First’ approach, handpicked some of its top fans and invited them over for a surprise to the Delhi Capitals office.

What followed was an unforgettable experience for the fans. After a heartfelt conversation with CEO Vinod Bisht about their favourite players and this season’s expectations, the fans witnessed the unveiling of the new jersey. These fans were the very first ones to see the new jersey, even before the players. Getting their hands on their very own customised DC jerseys left the fans elated, but the best was saved for the end. Delhi Capitals captain Shreyas Iyer and opener Shikhar Dhawan connected with them live over a video call, to catch a glimpse of the jersey and chat with the fans, making it a rare and precious experience.

"Delhi’s fans have stood by the team through ups and downs, so it is imperative for us to make them feel special,” said Chairman and co-owner Kiran Kumar Grandhi, on the occasion. “To take the fan experience to a different level, we also organised a photoshoot for the select fans in the new jersey, just like we do for the players. We are glad to have given them a memorable experience. It’s also a very proud moment for all of us at GMR to see the group’s logo on the arm. We cannot wait for the league to kick off, I wish the team all the very best.”

The new Delhi Capitals jersey will continue to be dominated by blue (representing stability and confidence), and red (symbolising energy, passion &amp; aggression). The jersey is in a darker shade of blue, however, and graduates to lighter tones. In addition to the trademark tiger stripes across the jersey, red tiger claws on the sides makes the overall appeal extremely dynamic.

“The new jersey looks trendy, which is in sync with our team – a vibrant, young side ready to take on a challenge, and the tiger claws make a strong statement.” said Delhi Capitals Director &amp; Interim CEO Vinod Bisht, of the new jersey. “It was an invigorating experience for me to unveil the jersey with some of our diehard fans, who always bring such great emotional energy to the table. The high point of the event was the surprise video call from Shreyas and Shikhar. Such kind of direct engagement and access to players and management is something the fans really treasure. Going forward, it will be our endeavour to present more such opportunities to them.”

India's Satwiksairaj Rankireddy&nbsp;and&nbsp;Chirag Shetty were knocked out in the second round of the All England Open badminton doubles by Denmark's Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen on Thursday.

After losing the first game 21-16, Rankireddy&nbsp;and&nbsp;Shetty took the second by a convincing score of 21-11, only for the Danes to prevail 21-17 in the decider.

The match was given added spice by the fact Denmark's Mathias Boe is now the Indian team's doubles coach.

But Astrup said that Boe's presence "didn't affect us in any way".&nbsp;

"It was a great game –- a very mental game for all of us on court," he told the Badminton World Federation website. &nbsp;

The Danes will now play French brothers Toma Junior Popov and Christo Popov in the quarterfinals.

In the women's doubles, India's Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy beat sixth seeds Stefani Stoeva and Gabriela Stoeva 21-17, 21-10 for a place in the quarterfinals.&nbsp;

All the seeds in the women's singles got through comfortably to the last eight, with India's PV Sindhu too strong for Line Christophersen as she defeated the young Dane 21-8, 21-8.

Paul Pogba scored the winner on his return from injury as Manchester United beat AC Milan 1-0 on Thursday to join Arsenal in the Europa League quarter-finals, while Dinamo Zagreb knocked out Tottenham Hotspur after extra time in Croatia.

The France midfielder struck the only goal at the San Siro four minutes after replacing Marcus Rashford as a half-time substitute, scooping home after an ugly scramble inside the Milan area.

United goalkeeper Dean Henderson produced an excellent reflex save to deny Zlatan Ibrahimovic an equaliser against his old club and secure a 2-1 aggregate victory for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team.

"We've come through a very difficult tie against a fantastic club and we've overcome some difficulties," Solskjaer told BT Sport.

"We've missed Paul, he's been out for almost two months. He was just getting into his best form. He's going to give us a big boost for the rest of the season."&nbsp;

The three-time European champions are one of two English clubs in Friday's draw for the last eight, as Arsenal also qualified despite suffering a 1-0 loss to Olympiakos in the second leg.

Youssef El-Arabi's deflected second-half strike earned Olympiakos another victory at the Emirates but Arsenal advanced 3-2 on aggregate, avenging their exit to the Greeks on away goals last season.

"Really happy to be through. We had a tough opponent, so happy to be through. Sometimes we have to be fair with ourselves -- we were nowhere near the levels we could be," said Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

Jose Mourinho's Spurs crashed out of the competition after surrendering a 2-0 lead from the first leg, with Dinamo forward Mislav Orsic scoring a brilliant hat-trick for the Croatian champions.&nbsp;

Dinamo coach Zoran Mamic resigned this week after being sentenced to four years and eight months in jail for multi-million euro fraud involving Luka Modric's move to Tottenham and other transfers.

However, Orsic curled in a marvellous shot from the corner of the area to give Dinamo the lead on 62 minutes and then capped off a fine move with a thumping finish to send the match to extra time.

Orsic completed his treble in style as he ran past three players and hammered a low drive beyond Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris from the edge of the box on 106 minutes.

Harry Kane nearly snatched a late goal that would have put Spurs through on away goals but his effort was clawed out by Dinamo goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic as the hosts won 3-2 on aggregate.

<h2>- 'Basics of life' -</h2>

"My team didn't bring to the game the basics of football or life –- to respect our jobs and give everything. I can only apologise to the Tottenham supporters," said Mourinho.

"If I forget the last 10 minutes of extra time, where we did something to get a different result, the 90 minutes and first half of extra time was one team leaving everything on the pitch.

"My team didn't look like it was playing an important match. Another attitude is needed. To say I feel sad is not enough. What I feel is much more than sadness."

Steven Gerrard's Rangers finished with nine men in a 2-0 home loss to Slavia Prague, as the Czech side won 3-1 on aggregate.

Peter Olayinka gave Slavia an early lead at Ibrox and Rangers' hopes of a comeback suffered a double blow with Kemar Roofe and then Leon Balogun sent off for the Scottish champions in the second half.

Nicolae Stanciu's free-kick immediately after Balogun's dismissal ensured victory for Slavia.

Ajax made sure of their passage into the next round as a David Neres goal and Dusan Tadic penalty rounded off a 5-0 aggregate win over Young Boys.

Gerard Moreno's double in Spain gave Villarreal a second 2-0 victory over Dynamo Kiev in as many weeks, while Granada extended their debut run in Europe, going through 3-2 overall despite a 2-1 loss to Norway's Molde in Budapest.

Roma also progressed as a 2-1 victory courtesy of two goals from Real Madrid loanee Borja Mayoral against Shakhtar Donetsk in Kiev wrapped up a 5-1 win on aggregate.

Man Utd, Arsenal into Europa League quarters as Spurs collapse

Paul Pogba returned from injury to score the winner as Manchester United beat AC Milan 1-0 on Thursday to advance to the Europa League quarter-finals 2-1 on aggregate.

World Cup winner Pogba had been sidelined for over five weeks with a hamstring injury.

But the 28-year-old Frenchman scored four minutes after coming off the bench at the start of the second half in the last 16, second leg clash at the San Siro.

Coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer welcomed Pogba's return as "a big, big boost for us".

"The boys have done remarkable without Paul but we know his qualities.

"He makes a very, very big difference to us. Paul has been working really hard, but you could see he couldn't play more han 45 minutes.

"We had to readdress a couple of things in the second half when I think we were much, much better

"We want to go all the way, it was hard to lose in the semi-finals (last year)."

Zlatan Ibrahimovic also returned from a thigh injury for Milan, the Swede coming on after an hour but despite threatening could not find a way past his former club.

"This elimination is a big disappointment," said coach Stefano Pioli.

"We played like a great team but we should have scored a goal in the first half tonight.

"Manchester are a very strong team that got to the semi-finals of the Europa League last year, a team that beat Manchester City 10 days ago.

"It's tough be we have to bounce back immediately in the league."

Milan had a slight advantage against 2017 winners United thanks to Simon Kjaer's stoppage-time away goal in the first leg at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer named&nbsp;an unchanged side from the first leg, sticking with the team that beat West Ham at the weekend in the Premier League.

Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani remained out injured but Marcus Rashford returned as a starter, with Pogba and Donny van de Beek back on the bench.

<h2>- Pogba's strength 'no secret' -</h2>

United put the hosts under pressure early, but the 'Rossoneri' got into their stride&nbsp;as the first half progressed.

Samu Castillejo pulled a pass back for Franck Kessie after 25 minutes, but a Victor Lindelof sliding tackle averted the danger for United.

Kessie was impressive in midfield, the Ivorian sending through an unmarked Alexis Saelemaekers only for Dean Henderson beat away the Belgian's effort.

Rade Krunic missed a chance to break the deadlock before the break when he shot wide just before half time.

Pogba came off the bench in place of Rashford after the break and had an immediate impact.&nbsp;

The former Juventus player blasting into the top of the net from close range following a scramble on front of the Milan goal.

Mason Greenwood&nbsp;tried his chance from a distance just after but Gianluigi Donnarumma made a save.

Ibrahimovic came on after 65 minutes in place of Castillejo along with Manchester United loanee Diogo Dalot.

And the Swede almost broke through seven minutes later, getting his head to a Hakan Calhanoglu cross, rising above Luke Shaw with Henderson doing well to punch the header out.

United held on with Pogba almost doubling their account with a header two minutes from time.

"I was sure my header would go in but it didn't," said Ibrahimovic.&nbsp;

"We did well throughout the game, we created many chances, but if you don't score then the moment comes when their pressing led us to an error that cost us dearly because of Pogba's goal.&nbsp;

"Everyone knows how strong (Pogba) is, it's no secret. He's not strong, he's very strong."

"We had to readdress a couple of things in the second half when I think we were much, much better "We want to go all the way, it was hard to lose in the semi-finals (last year)." Zlatan Ibrahimovic also returned from a thigh injury for Milan, the Swede coming on after an hour but despite threatening could not find a way past his former club. "This elimination is a big disappointment," said coach Stefano Pioli. "We played like a great team but we should have scored a goal in the first half tonight. "Manchester are a very strong team that got to the semi-finals of the Europa League last year, a team that beat Manchester City 10 days ago. "It's tough be we have to bounce back immediately in the league." Milan had a slight advantage against 2017 winners United thanks to Simon Kjaer's stoppage-time away goal in the first leg at Old Trafford. Solskjaer named an unchanged side from the first leg, sticking with the team that beat West Ham at the weekend in the Premier League. Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani remained out injured but Marcus Rashford returned as a starter, with Pogba and Donny van de Beek back on the bench. - Pogba's strength 'no secret' - United put the hosts under pressure early, but the 'Rossoneri' got into their stride as the first half progressed. Pogba came off the bench in place of Rashford after the break and had an immediate impact. The former Juventus player blasting into the top of the net from close range following a scramble on front of the Milan goal. Mason Greenwood tried his chance from a distance just after but Gianluigi Donnarumma made a save. "I was sure my header would go in but it didn't," said Ibrahimovic. "We did well throughout the game, we created many chances, but if you don't score then the moment comes when their pressing led us to an error that cost us dearly because of Pogba's goal. "Everyone knows how strong (Pogba) is, it's no secret. He's not strong, he's very strong."

The postponed Spanish Copa del Rey final from last year will be played without fans, the Spanish football federation confirmed on Thursday.

Reports in Spain had suggested a 20 to 25 per cent-capacity could be allowed for the match in Seville next month between Basque rivals Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad.&nbsp;

The final was postponed last year because of the coronavirus pandemic and then put off to April 3, in the hope supporters could attend the much-anticipated derby.

But the federation has said the final will still take place behind closed doors, with travel restrictions in Spain ensuring local Bilbao and La Real fans would not be able to go.

A statement from the federation said the regional Health Ministry in Andalusia had identified a "moderate risk" if the fixture was opened up to the public.

It added: "The current situation with the virus and the established measures that ensure the restriction of travel, including for both the autonomous community of Andalusia and the province of Seville, mean it would not be feasible for fans not living in the province to attend the game."

The federation are still to confirm whether this year's Copa del Rey final between Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona will also go ahead without fans.

That game is scheduled to take place on April 17, two weeks after the 2020 final, also at La Cartuja stadium in Seville.

Suggestions that supporters could be allowed to attend the finals were rejected on Wednesday by Spanish Health Minister Carolina Darias.

"Let me be clear and blunt. It is not appropriate. It is not timely and it is not convenient," Darias told a press conference.

The Covid-19 infection rate has increased slightly in several regions recently which may mean that a weeks-long decline in the national infection rate has bottomed out, she added.

Yet La Liga president Javier Tebas said he hoped some fans could return to league matches in late April.

"It's been a year, we've learned a lot, and we hope that by the third week of April we can start to have a percentage back in the stadiums," Tebas told a press breakfast, adding "if circumstances allow".

Spain has suffered more than three million Covid-19 cases and 72,565 deaths.

Spaniards traditionally take holidays in the week running up to Easter Sunday, which falls on April 4 this year.

"Everyone is cautiously watching Easter, a key moment to see how things are going," said Tebas, adding that it would provide an indication of whether fans could return to La Liga matches.

"We all hope that after Easter we can set a quick date."

Tebas was echoing a sentiment expressed by Irene Lozano, the Spanish Secretary of State for Sports, who said recently: "If we see that a fourth wave has not started, we can begin to raise very important questions for fans, supporters and the clubs themselves."

Spectators have been barred from top-flight Spanish football matches since March 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

First Copa del Rey final will be without fans, Spanish federation confirms

Among the many eyebrow-raising comments made by Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli recently was the suggestion that clubs involved in the Champions League would no longer be allowed to buy or sell players among themselves.

In his role as head of the European Club Association, Agnelli is at the forefront of plans to reshape the Champions League which include the likely expansion of the group stage to 36 teams, each playing 10 group games against 10 different opponents in a so-called 'Swiss system'.

The discussed reforms are widely seen as a compromise between European football's governing body UEFA and the continent's most powerful clubs, preventing the threat of a breakaway 'Super League' but entrenching the positions of the richest teams.

Agnelli's Juve are one of those, but they will be absent from Friday's quarter-final draw following their shock last-16 defeat by Porto.

Yet rather than the transfer of a player between two clubs, it is a coach who started the season in charge of one of Europe's elite before joining another who made the biggest impression in the Champions League this week.

Thomas Tuchel was sacked by Paris Saint-Germain in December despite winning a Champions League group also containing RB Leipzig and Manchester United.

In January he joined Chelsea and the impact the German has had in seven weeks has been remarkable. On Wednesday they saw off La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid 2-0 at Stamford Bridge to win their last-16 tie 3-0 on aggregate.

Tuchel took over a side struggling for consistency under Frank Lampard and immediately turned them into a supremely disciplined unit that has conceded just two goals and remains unbeaten in his 13 games in charge.

They made Diego Simeone's Atletico look thoroughly ordinary in both legs and few teams will relish the prospect of facing Chelsea in the last eight.

"We feel that we deserve this. We are in the last eight which is already a big step. From there on we go, there is no need to be afraid, we will take what we get and will prepare in the best way possible," Tuchel said on Wednesday.

<h2>- Pressure on Man City? -</h2>

Chelsea's 2012 Champions League triumph came after they changed manager mid-season and Tuchel will be determined to go one better than last season, when PSG lost to Bayern Munich in the final.

A reunion with PSG in the next round would be fascinating, and not one the French club would likely welcome as they struggle to impress under Tuchel's successor Mauricio Pochettino, their 4-1 win in Barcelona aside.

There are six former winners in the last-eight draw, with a total of 29 European Cups between them.

Only Manchester City among the quarter-finalists have never reached the final, but they look formidable: Pep Guardiola's team have won 24 of their last 25 games and are chasing an unprecedented quadruple.

Perhaps the only thing counting against them is the growing pressure to win the trophy after quarter-final exits in the last three years.

"Since the first year I arrived they told me that you have to win the Champions League," Guardiola admitted after his side beat Borussia Moenchengladbach.

<h2>- Money talks -</h2>

With Liverpool also still alive, England have three representatives in the draw, yet Bayern -- with 18 wins and one draw in 19 Champions League games since the start of last season -- remain the team to beat.

Defeats for Juventus and Atalanta mean there is no Italian team in the last eight for the first time since 2016, and Porto, despite eliminating Juve, are surely the side most teams would prefer to face.

The Portuguese champions have lifted the trophy twice before and are regulars on Europe's biggest stage, but given how much money talks at this level it would be a huge surprise if they went any further.

Porto are way down the list of the continent's richest clubs and a recent KPMG Football Benchmark report put their income last year at 87.3 million euros ($104m), less than a quarter that of Dortmund, the club closest to them financially.

Tajikstan's Dilshod Nazarov, who won Olympic hammer gold in the 2016 Rio Games, was on Thursday banned for two years for doping, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) announced.

Re-testing of Nazarov's sample from the 2011 World Athletics Championships in Daegu, South Korea, had shown the presence of a prohibited substance, namely DHCMT, or oral turinabol, a performance-enhancing anabolic steroid.

The AIU declared Nazarov ineligible for two years starting September 24, 2019, and scrubbed his results between August 29, 2011-August 29, 2013.

A three-time Asian champion, Nazarov also won world silver in Beijing in 2015 before claiming his country's first ever Olympic gold medal a year later in Rio.

The 38-year-old, who also competed in the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympics, finished 10th in the Daegu worlds and fifth two years later in Moscow.

Suryakumar Yadav on Thursday became the first Indian and third overall cricketer to smash the first ball in T20 international for a six. Suryakumar hooked pacer Jofra Archer for a six after coming on to bat at number three in the fourth T20I between India and England at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.&nbsp;

Suryakumar was sent to bat at number three after India lost opener Rohit Sharma early in the innings. While Rohit started the match with a first-ball six off Adil Rashid, the Hitman was dismissed by Archer. The England pacer tried to rattle Suryakumar, who was playing his first delivery in international cricket, with a bouncer but the Mumbai batsman connected well to dispatch the ball for a six.

In T20Is, only Pakistan's Sohail Tanvir and South Africa's Mangaliso Mosehle had started their career with a first-ball six. While Tanvir smashed it against India in Johannesburg in the year 2007, Mosehle achieved the feat against Sri Lanka in Centurion in 2017.

Suryakumar Yadav becomes first Indian to start international career with first-ball 6

Controversy erupted during the fourth T20I between India and England following the dismissal of Suryakumar Yadav after third umpire gave him out despite the slow-motion replays suggesting that the ball had touched the ground.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The incident happened in the 14th&nbsp;over of India's innings when Suryakumar was looking set on the crease with a 30-ball 57. Sam Curran bowled a full delivery as SKY went for a ramp in a bid to clear the fine-leg boundary.&nbsp;&nbsp;

However, he didn't get the cleanest of connection as Dawid Malan dived to take the catch. The on-field umpire&nbsp;Anantha Padmanabhan gave the soft-signal as out and referred the decision to the third umpire&nbsp;Virender Sharma.&nbsp;

The third umpire went through slow-motion replays multiple times and the front angle suggested that the ball had touched the ground in between Malan's fingers. However, the third umpire thought the replays were inconclusive and went with the on-field decision.&nbsp;&nbsp;

From former cricketers such as Virender Sehwag, Wasim Jaffer to high-profile celebrities, everyone took to Twitter to congratulate Suryakumar on a fantastic maiden half-century while slamming the decision by the third umpire.&nbsp;

Controversy erupted during the fourth T20I between India and England following the dismissal of Suryakumar Yadav after third umpire gave him out despite the slow-motion replays suggesting that the ball had touched the ground. The incident happened in the 14th over of India's innings when Suryakumar was looking set on the crease with a 30-ball 57. Sam Curran bowled a full delivery as SKY went for a ramp in a bid to clear the fine-leg boundary. However, he didn't get the cleanest of connection as Dawid Malan dived to take the catch. The on-field umpire Anantha Padmanabhan gave the soft-signal as out and referred the decision to the third umpire Virender Sharma. The third umpire went through slow-motion replays multiple times and the front angle suggested that the ball had touched the ground in between Malan's fingers. However, the third umpire thought the replays were inconclusive and went with the on-field decision. From former cricketers such as Virender Sehwag, Wasim Jaffer to high-profile celebrities, everyone took to Twitter to congratulate Suryakumar on a fantastic maiden half-century while slamming the decision by the third umpire. Former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir has taken a sly dig at the COVID-19 protocols and bio-secure bubble arrangements made by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 6.&nbsp;&nbsp;

PSL 6 was postponed mid-way through the tournament after several COVID-19 positive cases were reported within squads. Amir has said that PCB shouldn't have allowed outsiders inside the hotel where the players and officials were staying for the tournament.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Amir further said that there were two lifts at the hotel for player and visitors but were divided by a wooden stand while taking a jibe that&nbsp;the virus would not go away after seeing that piece of wood.&nbsp;

“There were two lifts at the hotel, one for players and others for the rest of the visitors. There was a wooden stand to separate the two but the people using the lifts could still talk and see each other. Covid would not run away after seeing that piece of wood,” Amir made a tongue-in-cheek comment&nbsp;during an interview with Cricket Pakistan.&nbsp;

“Outsiders should not have been allowed at the hotel and the staff should have stayed in the bubble throughout the event,” he added.&nbsp;

Amir further compared PCB's bio-secure bubble for PSL 6 with arrangements made by other cricket tournaments in the world.&nbsp;

“I played at the T10 League and the Lanka Premier League (LPL) where the hotel was fully booked for the players and no outsiders were allowed. Every team had their separate lifts and teams were restricted to their designated floors,” he said.&nbsp;

India would be looking to level the five-match series against England when they take the field for the fourth T20I at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. With England leading the series 2-1, the Men in Blue would be itching to record a win and take the series to the last match.&nbsp;&nbsp;Whereas for the visitors, it is a golden opportunity to win the series after the Eoin Morgan-led outfit came all guns blazing in the third T20I.&nbsp;

The series has produced one-sided matches so far and fans would be hoping to get a close contest between the two top sides.&nbsp;&nbsp;

As far as the playing XIs are concerned, England are expected to field the same playing XI with the players hitting good form in the series. Skipper Morgan has a fully-fit squad to pick his team for the match.&nbsp;&nbsp;

For India, T Natarajan has joined the squad after recovering from his injury at the NCA. However, he is likely to be benched in the game. Suryakumar Yadav is expected to be back in the playing XI but it would be interesting to see whether India&nbsp;rest KL Rahul, who has registered scores of 1,0,0 in the series so far.&nbsp;

Australian sporting icon Ellyse Perry has become the latest global superstar to sign up for cricket’s new 100-ball competition The Hundred.

The ICC Women’s Player of the Decade will play for Birmingham Phoenix in the first season of the new competition where she will line up alongside compatriot Ashleigh Gardner, New Zealand’s Sophie Devine and England’s own Amy Jones and Georgia Elwiss.

Ellyse Perry said: “I can’t wait to come over to the UK and get involved in The Hundred this summer. It’s fantastic to see how it’s put women’s cricket in the spotlight and attracted so many of the world’s top players to come and play in it.

“With 100 balls per side it’s going to be really exciting to play in, and I’m looking forward to helping introduce a new generation to cricket and hopefully inspiring them to pick up a bat and ball themselves.”

A true sporting superstar, Perry became the youngest cricketer to represent Australia in 2007. Two weeks later she made her debut for the Matildas, the Australian women's football team, in an Olympic qualifier against Hong Kong, scoring in the second minute. She is the first Australian to have appeared in both ICC and FIFA World Cups and one of a very small number of global sportspeople to have played in both.

She focused solely on cricket in 2014 and has since been described as the most marketable sportsperson in Australia. She is one of the star players of the Australia team who won the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in 2013 and ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2018 and 2020. She was recently recognised by the ICC as the ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Decade.

The Hundred features world-class domestic and international players in men’s and women’s competitions, with family-friendly entertainment off the pitch. It will take place this summer and feature eight city-based teams based in Birmingham, Cardiff, Leeds, Manchester, Nottingham, Southampton and two in London. It will be screened live by the BBC and Sky.

The Hundred will start with a women’s match with Oval Invincibles taking on Manchester Originals live on Sky and BBC on July 21, a day before the same men’s teams meet.

Beth Barrett-Wild, Head of The Hundred Women’s Competition, said: “Ellyse’s participation in The Hundred shows that the competition continues to attract the best players from around the world.

“By showcasing the most talented female cricketers on the planet, on a big stage, alongside the men, we have an opportunity to continue to normalise cricket as a sport for women and girls, as much as it is for men and boys. I truly believe that The Hundred will be a gamechanger for women’s sport.”

Ben Sawyer, Birmingham Phoenix women’s team Head Coach said: “Ellyse is a world-class cricketer who would improve any team and we are thrilled that she will be turning out for us at Birmingham Phoenix this summer.
