Rahul Tripathi and Mayank Markande produced match-winning performances against Punjab Kings in a home clash to help SRH&nbsp;open its&nbsp;account in IPL 2023. Following successive&nbsp;losses, SunRisers Hyderabad bagged two points as Tripathi’s unbeaten 70 helped them chase a modest 144 on a Sunday evening. With this, Punjab also suffered its&nbsp;first loss of the season.

Electing to bowl first after winning the toss, SRH’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked a wicket on the first ball by dismissing in-form batter Prabhsimran Singh, trapped right in front. Two more wickets held them back as Hyderabad was top of their opponent&nbsp;inside the Powerplay.&nbsp;

Captain Shikhar Dhawan and Sam Curran stitched a little partnership, only for Mayank Markande to come in and wreak havoc in the middle overs. While wickets kept tumbling at one end, Dhawan stood his ground and took the onus on him to bail his team out of trouble. The left-handed batter&nbsp;deployed a brave&nbsp;approach, as he kept the strike mostly and went after the bowlers.

As luck favoured him a bit, he kept going till the end and eventually scored an unbeaten 99, helping his team reach a fighting total of 143 for nine.

Though the change in batting order didn’t bring results up-front, SRH made the most of this opportunity and didn’t lose control of the game during the chase. Following Harry Brook’s wicket in the first six overs, opener Mayank Agarwal and Tripathi went about their business and kept rotating strikes in addition to smashing some bad balls for boundaries.

After Mayank departed, Aiden Markram entered the scene, and alongside Tripathi, who hit a composed fifty (74 off 48 balls), the pair, without much hassle, chased down the target with 17 balls and eight wickets in hand.&nbsp;

IPL 2023: DC's David Warner creates HISTORY, joins Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan in EXCLUSIVE list

Former India cricketer Suresh Raina has backed Shikhar Dhawan for his role in the Indian Premier League (IPL) after helping his side Punjab Kings to back-to-back wins. Dhawan scored 40 in the opening match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and he followed that with an unbeaten 86-run knock against Rajasthan Royals (RR) to help his side to gain early momentum.

"He was performing the anchor's role. Much is made about his strike rate but he played an impactful role. Look at the fact that he's made 450+ runs in 7 consecutive IPL seasons. He knew that when the dew falls, the pace becomes easier. He batted responsibly and that's why Punjab pulled off the performance they did. Shikhar had an important role to play in that,” said Raina while speaking on Dhawan.

<h2>Dhawan and Co in top form</h2>

Explosive half-centuries by openers Prabhsimran Singh and skipper Shikhar Dhawan and an opening partnership of 90 runs between the duo powered Punjab Kings (PBKS) to a massive 197/4 in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Wednesday.

On a batting-friendly track, RR failed to capitalize in the start and lost surprise opener Ravichandran Ashwin (0) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (11) early. While Sanju Samson (42) and last season’s Orange Cap winner Jos Buttler (19) tried to keep RR in the contest, it never quite happened for them as they lost wickets at regular intervals.

Useful contributions from Devdutt Padikkal (21), Riyan Parag (20) and Shimron Hetmyer kept RR’s hopes alive until last but could help them avoid a narrow defeat and were restricted to 192/7 in their 20 overs and lost the contest. Nathan Ellis was the pick of the bowlers for PBK, having scalped four wickets.

The win saw PBKS join Gujarat Titans and go joint-top with four points from the opening two matches of the IPL. They will next take on Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad and will look to register three wins in a row.

IPL 2023: Suresh Raina backs Shikhar Dhawan after incredible show with bat, says 'He batted responsibly'

Punjab Kings opener Prabhsimran Singh finally hit his maiden IPL fifty in his fifth season, against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on Wednesday night. After adapting the daring approach this season, the right-handed batter found success with the bat, having scored 23 and 23 and 60 in two games played. Particularly against Rajasthan, he took the attack to the opposition and had their backs against the wall in no time.

Upon completing his maiden IPL fifty, Simran thanked God and showered praises on his fellow opener and Punjab captain, Shikhar Dhawan for backing him throughout.&nbsp;

“I’m very thankful to God for my first fifty in five years of playing the IPL. It was an enjoyable knock, and I hope to continue like this,” Simran told Jitesh Sharma in a video posted by IPL on its social media handles.

Prabhsimran also said Shikhar gave him the confidence to express himself and go for the kill from ball one. He added that Dhawan told him to continue playing his natural game and that he (Dhawan) will take care of everything else.

“Shikhar Dhawan asked me if he should take strike since I had never faced Trent Boult before, but I told him I’ll take the strike. He backed me throughout my innings. Whenever we spoke to each other while batting, he told me to play my natural game and express myself, the rest I’ll handle,” Prabhsimran added.

Speaking about what changed for him this season or what is the secret behind his little success so far, the right-hander said that working hard on both fronts – batting and wicket-keeping, brought him laurels.

“There are no secrets (to his recent consistency), but there’s a lot of preparation around my fitness, batting and wicket-keeping. I try and practice in the nets just like I would in a match,” he added.

Meanwhile, Punjab will now take on struggling SunRisers Hyderabad in an away game on April 9th on Sunday.

On Monday (April 03), the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) returned to their home ground, i.e. the historic MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, after 1,426 days (following IPL 2019).&nbsp;Thala MS Dhoni made the occasion more special courtesy of his 3-ball 12 in the Yellow Army's IPL 2023 clash versus Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). As KL Rahul-led LSG opted to bowl first, CSK posted a mammoth 217 for 7 and Dhoni's two big sixes in the last over made him the seventh batter to enter the 5,000-run club in the mega event.

After Ruturaj Gaikwad (57) and Devon Conway (47) got CSK off to a flyer, Chennai continued to pile runs with vital contributions from Shivam Dube (16-ball 27), Moeen Ali's 13-ball 19 and Ambati Rayudu's 14-ball 27*. IPL 2023: Updated squads of all 10 teams and their captains

Shikhar Dhawan is in the last phase of his international career. At present, the 37-year-old cricketer isn't part of Team India across formats. However, Dhawan remains a big name in world cricket. He is known for his immaculate record in white-ball formats, especially in the ODIs, and for his positive approach and is a style icon for youngsters.

From his iconic moustache to several tattoos, Dhawan is a fan favourite. In a recent interaction, the swashbuckling left-hander opened up on a hilarious incident when he got his first tattoo and how he ended up taking an HIV test afterwards.

In an interview with Aajtak, Dhawan said, "When I was 14-15 years old, I had gone to Manali and had got a tattoo done on my back without informing my family members. I had to hide it for quite some time, about 3-4 months, and then when my father got to know, he beat me. I got a bit scared after doing the tattoo because I had no clue about the number of bodies that needle had pierced. So then I went and did my HIV Test and it's negative to date (laughs)."

I did my HIV Test: Team India's Shikhar Dhawan shares hilarious episode of when he got his first tattoo

Out-of-favour India opener Shikhar Dhawan says he would have preferred Shubman Gill over him if he were to select the Indian team for the 50-over World Cup later this year. The veteran of 167 ODIs, Dhawan, said given how well young Gill is performing across two formats at this moment, picking him for the mega event will be in best interest for the Indian team.

Having made his international debut a couple of years back, Gill became a sure-starter in Tests and ODIs following his latest exploits across both formats in the past six months. After scoring his maiden Test hundred against Bangladesh during the away series in December 2022, Gill became the fifth Indian batter to notch a double ton in ODIs against New Zealand in Hyderabad early this year. He then scored two more hundreds in the same series, one in the final ODI and one in the T20I series – his first in that format.

Speaking during an exclusive chat with Aaj Tak, Dhawan said though he is still eyeing a place in the India team for the World Cup later this year, he is aware of how well Shubman Gill is playing, adding the youngster deserves to get picked ahead of him.

“I feel the way Shubman is (playing). Like he was playing two formats and performing well in Tests and T20s. He was playing more matches in the international circuit and I wasn't... If I were the selector then definitely would have given the chance to Shubman. Would have selected Shubman over Shikhar," Dhawan told Aaj Tak.

Elaborating further on what he thinks about his future in the Indian team, Dhawan revealed Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid did support him after taking over the reins and backed him to fight for his place in the XI.

“When Rohit took over the captaincy, he along with Rahul Dravid backed me enough. They told me they wanted me to focus on my cricket and that my vision should be the next World Cup,” Dhawan added.

Dhawan added the past year was good for him as he was consistent, but when his form dropped, Gill grabbed the chance with both hands and made the most of it. He further admitted that after Ishan Kishan made headlines by scoring his maiden double century in ODIs – the quickest among all, Dhawan feared for his place in the XI.

"2022 was very good for me, I was consistent in ODIs. But there is this young guy who has been doing well in two formats, and when my form dipped in a series or two then they gave a chance to Shubman and he has lived up to their expectation. "We are used to such situation. When Ishan Kishan slammed a double century against Bangladesh, then, for a moment, I thought I could be out of the team," said Dhawan.

The left-handed batter will be seen playing for Punjab Kings in the upcoming edition of IPL 2023, whereas, Gill will open for Gujarat Titans.

Shubman Gill over me on current form, says out-of-favour India opener as 50-over World Cup looms

Shikhar Dhawan's stocks have gone down considerably following his poor run of form and the emergence of Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill. Hence, Dhawan was last seen in action during India-Bangladesh ODIs and hasn't played a single international match in 2023. While many have written him off for the 2023 ODI World Cup, the senior batter hasn't lost hope and remains optimistic about featuring in Team India's squad for the showpiece event, to be held later this year in India. At present, the 37-year-old is focused on IPL 2023 where he will be leading the Punjab Kings (PBKS).

Speaking on his ouster from the national side, Dhawan was quoted as saying by the news agency PTI, "They (ups and downs) are part of life. With time, with experience, you learn how to handle them with ease. I find a lot of strength in them. I did my best. If somebody is doing better than my best, that is fine. That is why that person is there and I am not there. I am very happy and content wherever I am. I make sure my process goes on strong. Of course, there is always a chance of me coming back to the side."

The left-hander further opined, "If it comes (comeback) it is good, if it doesn't come that is also good. I have achieved a lot and I am happy with that. Whatever has to come will come. I don't get desperate about it." Dhawan, who has represented India in 34 Tests, 167 ODIs, and 68 T20Is, added, "My IPL preparation is going on well. I was in Bangalore for 10 days. The focus was on fitness. With the IPL coming up, I will join the camp in Mohali on February 24 and then we regroup again later on and get going. I am in a very good state of mind and looking forward to leading from the front."

In IPL 2022, Dhawan became a part of the Punjab outfit and returned as the eighth-highest run-getter. He ended with 460 runs but had an ordinary strike rate of 122.66. This time around, Dhawan will be desperate to score more freely and make a big statement with ODI WC spot up for grabs.&nbsp;

Of course, there is always a chance of me coming back to the side." I have achieved a lot and I am happy with that. Shikhar Dhawan not 'desperate' about national comeback, focused on leading Punjab Kings in IPL 2023

Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan hasn’t had the best of times on and off the field lately. While he got dropped from India’s white-ball squads owing to some mediocre performances, his relationship with his estranged wife, Aesha Mukerji also took an ugly turn. As per latest reports, Aesha tried defaming Dhawan by even circulating defamatory messages to Dhawan’s IPL franchise&nbsp;Delhi Capitals’ CEO, Dheeraj Malhotra, in an attempt to tarnish his reputation. The reports further claim that Dhawan has now filed a plea in Delhi’s Patiala House Court against her, who is also believed to have threatened Dhawan of ruining his career.

Looking into this case, Judge Harish Kumar has said, if Aesha actually has some ‘real grievances’ against Shikhar Dhawan, she cannot be restrained from lodging with the concerned authorities.

However, he further added saying, “She can certainly be restrained from sharing her grievance against him (Dhawan) with her friends, relatives, peers of parties as well as from making it public even before approaching the appropriate authority."

"In these circumstances, she is hereby restrained till further order from circulating any of her grievances against Dhawan or her version of the dispute involved herein or the alleged defamatory and false material against him in social media, print media or to any other forum or to friends, relatives or colleagues of the parties," Kumar said as quoted by the Quint.

Dhawan married Aesha in 2012 and they even have&nbsp;a son who stays with&nbsp;Aesha in Australia.

What future lies for Dhawan?

Out of favour opener Shikhar Dhawan last featured for India during the third ODI against Bangladesh in December last year. Now with the young players like Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan delivering at the top in the white-ball cricket, Dhawan’s comeback doesn’t look likely to happen, at least in the 50-over format. Even in the shortest format, the left-handed batter could still feature for his IPL franchise in Delhi Capitals this season, his chances of playing T20Is for India any further look bleak too.

Relationship between Shikhar Dhawan and Aesha gets dirty, estranged wife threatens to ruin his career

Ishan Kishan ended 2022 with a bang by becoming only the fourth Indian -- seventh overall -- to slam an ODI double ton during the Indian tour of Bangladesh in December. Playing the third and inconsequential tie due to regular captain Rohit Sharma's thumb injury, the 24-year-old made the most of the opportunity and slammed a majestic 131-ball 210, laced with 24 fours and 10 sixes. Thus, Ishan made a big statement with India stepping into 2023, i.e. an ODI World Cup year with Men in Blue set to host the mega event.

Ahead of India's first international assignment in 2023, the BCCI selection committee -- under outgoing chief Chetan Sharma -- announced the national side's white-ball squads for their home series versus Sri Lanka, starting on January 03. While there was no mention of first-choice Rishabh Pant -- a first-choice keeper-batter across formats -- Kishan found his name in both the squads. With Shikhar Dhawan dropped, India still has&nbsp;quite a few batters who can accompany Rohit at the top. But, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir is crystal clear that Kishan deserves to partner Rohit in ODIs..

As quoted by Cricinfo, Gambhir said that the discussion about who should be Sharma's partner at the top should be over following Kishan's blitz. "I'm amazed we're discussing this, because someone's got a double-hundred in the previous innings," Gambhir pointed out when asked to name his choice on who should open with Rohit. "The discussion is over. It has to be Ishan Kishan. Someone who can get a double-hundred in those conditions against a reasonable attack - especially at [their] home - should play."

"He got what 200 by the 35th over mark? You can't look at anyone beyond Ishan Kishan. He has to be given a longer run. He can keep wickets as well, so he can do two jobs for you. So for me, that discussion shouldn't be there. If someone else had got a double-hundred, I think we would've gone gung-ho over that individual, but it's not the case with Ishan Kishan. Because we still continue to talk about other players. For me, that debate is over," he asserted.

Further, Gambhir mentioned his ideal India XI at this moment. "It's very difficult to look beyond Rohit and Ishan Kishan to open the batting, Virat at three, Surya at four, [and] Shreyas at five, because he's been incredible in the last one-and-a-half years. Yes, he's had issues against the short ball, but he's been able to manage it. You can't be the best against everything but if you're able to manage it and got the numbers going for you, you can't look beyond Shreyas at No. 5 and Hardik [Pandya] at 6."

India, under Hardik Pandya, will host SL in three T20Is -- from January 3 in Mumbai -- before the ODI series kicks off on January 10.

India’s squad for Sri Lanka T20Is: Hardik Pandya (Captain), Ishan Kishan (wk), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav (VC), Deepak Hooda, Rahul Tripathi, Sanju Samson, Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Harshal Patel, Umran Malik, Shivam Mavi, Mukesh Kumar.

India’s squad for Sri Lanka ODIs: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Hardik Pandya (VC), Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh.

So for me, that discussion shouldn't be there. If someone else had got a double-hundred, I think we would've gone gung-ho over that individual, but it's not the case with Ishan Kishan. Because we still continue to talk about other players. For me, that debate is over," he asserted. 5 and Hardik [Pandya] at 6." India, under Hardik Pandya, will host SL in three T20Is -- from January 3 in Mumbai -- before the ODI series kicks off on January 10. The discussion is over: Gambhir feels 'it has to be Ishan Kishan' who should open with Rohit in ODIs

On Tuesday (December 27), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee -- under outgoing chief Chetan Sharma -- announced India's squads for the white-ball home series versus Sri Lanka, which gets underway next year on January 03 in Mumbai. As expected, Hardik Pandya has once again been named as the captain of the T20I squad with no big guns available whereas Rohit Sharma will return to take charge of the ODI line-up after his thumb injury during the Bangladesh tour. Hardik has also been promoted as the new ODI vice-captain (despite KL Rahul's presence).&nbsp;

Some of the notable factors from the T20I line-up is that Suryakumar Yadav has been named as the vice-captain, which doesn't include the likes of Rahul, Rishabh Pant, etc. Meanwhile, it is a young squad including the likes of Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Axar Patel, Umran Malik, Mukesh Kumar (recently bought by Delhi Capitals in IPL 2023 mini-auction for INR 5 crores), etc. It gives one a sneak peek of the selectors' mindset keeping in view the next edition of the T20 World Cup, in the West Indies and USA, in 2024.

Talking about the ODI squad, Pant remains absent from it as well. Pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar is also not part of both squads. The biggest omission is Shikhar Dhawan, who has struggled for runs and has seen a sharp decline in his strike rate amid rising stocks of Kishan and Gill. Meanwhile, Md Shami also returned whereas the likes of Rahul and Kohli will feature straightaway in the 50-over series. There's no mention of Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja as the duo are expected to return for the New Zealand white-ball series at home.&nbsp;

BCCI's official Twitter handle released the squads via separate posts:&nbsp;

IND vs SL: Hardik Pandya to lead in T20Is, promoted as ODI vice-captain with Shikhar Dhawan dropped

Veteran India&nbsp;opener Shikhar Dhawan has had a poor run with bat against Bangladesh in the ODIs, and with Ishan Kishan now scoring his maiden double hundred (210) batting at the top, it looks like we have seen the last of Dhawan in this format. As per a report from PTI, as soon as the new selection committee will be formed, a decision regarding Dhawan’s future will be taken.

On Saturday, young keeper-batsman Ishan Kishan opened alongside Dhawan in absence of injured Rohit Sharma and smashed a world record of hitting the fastest double hundred in ODIs in 127 balls. Kishan’s inning was filled with intent and bravery, something that was missing in Dhawan’s approach of late. This historic knock will not only seal Ishan’s place in the XI for the upcoming series, it will also put Dhawan’s spot under scrutiny considering 50 over World Cup at home next year.

"A call on Shikhar's future will only be taken after new selection committee is appointed. But head coach Rahul Dravid and skipper Rohit Sharma's views can't be ignored," a senior BCCI source privy to developments told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

With other young players like Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad waiting in the wings, it will be interesting to see what combination the new selection committee goes ahead with. KL Rahul’s new batting position in the ODIs could play a role here knowing the management looks keen on sticking with Rahul instead of Pant in the middle order for now.

Shikhar Dhawan has been a stalwart of&nbsp;Indian cricket for around a decade now. Other than doing extremely well for India in the ICC tournaments (2013, 2015, and even 2017), Dhawan is also India’s third-highest run-getter (6793) among current crop of players including Rohit Sharma (9454) and Virat Kohli (12471) in ODIs. The left-handed batter from Delhi made his ODI debut against Australia in 2010.

Persistent rain saved India from a likely defeat in the third and final ODI versus New Zealand, however, it couldn't save Shikhar Dhawan &amp; Co. from a 1-0 series loss versus the No. 1 ranked Kane Williamson-led Black Caps on Wednesday (November 30) in Christchurch. Being asked to bat first, Indian batters failed to get going on a tough wicket as none apart from Washington Sundar (51) and Shreyas Iyer (49) looked comfortable in the middle as India only managed 219 all-out in 47.3 overs. In reply, NZ was cruising towards the total with Finn Allen unbeaten on 57 before rain played spoilsport and led to the match being called off.&nbsp;

Asked to bat first, India lost both their openers to be reduced to 55 for 2. The likes of Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Suryakumar Yadav and Deepak Hooda had a golden opportunity to stay for long and score big, however, none apart from Iyer got going. Adam Milne (3 for 57) and Lockie Ferguson (1 for 49) kept it tight with the ball whereas Daryl Mitchell also surprised and returned with an impressive 3 for 25 in seven overs. In reply, Finn Allen and Devon Conway were off to a flier and kept the scoreboard ticking without dropping much sweat to take Kiwis to 97 for no loss before Umran Malik accounted for Conway's scalp (38). Allen was not out on 57 (54) before rain made its presence felt and impacted the game, with the match eventually being called off. Thus, NZ won the series 1-0 after losing the rain-marred three T20Is 0-1.&nbsp;

New Zealand-India 3rd ODI called off due to rain, Kane Williamson & Co. win series 1-0

India and New Zealand will lock horns in the tour finale when Shikhar Dhawan &amp; Co. will take the field versus the Black Caps in the third and final ODI on Wednesday morning (November 30). So far, the ODI series has been pretty much like the three T20Is, which Hardik Pandya &amp; Co. won 1-0, with rain making its presence felt at regular intervals. While the ODI series opener went uninterrupted, where India failed to defend 306/7 and lost by seven wickets, the second and penultimate tie was abandoned due to persistent rain in Hamilton.&nbsp;

The third and final ODI will take place at the Hagley Oval, Christchurch. While Kane Williamson-led Kiwis will aim for a 2-0 scoreline, the Dhawan-led Indian team will be desperate to get a full game and end the series on a 1-1 scoreline. Before both sides take the field for the series and tour finale, here's an update on the weather forecast in Christchurch for Wednesday:

According to the NZ’s MetService, the Christchurch weather is set to test the patience of the fans on November 30. While no rain threat is there during the day, there could be some interruptions due to the weather forecast for&nbsp;the evening. In such a scenario, the teams will prefer batting second as the ball will be wet whereas even if the match is curtailed, it will also be beneficial for the chasing side.

India managed 89/1 in 12.5 overs in a rain-curtailed 29-over contest in the second ODI (after being asked to bat), in Hamilton, before rain had the final say. Post the proceedings, captain Dhawan opined on leading a young and exciting squad during the post-match presentation. "Damn exciting, makes me feel so young (laughs). No but seriously this is a good opportunity for the guys travelling so far, to see the way Shubman has batted and Umran’s bowling, glad to see that transition. As a team we want to get our processes right, and put on a good performance in Christchurch. Hopefully we can win and enjoy ourselves," he said.

It will be interesting to see if Sanju Samson gets a place in the playing XI after being dropped for the second ODI, due to India's lack of sixth-bowling option.

NZ vs IND, 3rd ODI: Will rain impact third and final match to spoil Team India's chances in Christchurch?

After losing the first ODI by seven wickets, Shikhar Dhawan-led Team India couldn't level the three-match series versus hosts Kane Williamson's New Zealand, on Sunday (November 27), due to persistent rain in Hamilton. Thus, India will now aim to end the series with a 1-1 scoreline to sign off a rain-marred tour without losing the T20Is (won 1-0) and ODIs. The third and final ODI between the two heavyweights will take place on Wednesday morning (November 30).&nbsp;

India played Deepak Chahar instead of Shardul Thakur and roped in Deepak Hooda by dropping Sanju Samson in the second and penultimate ODI. Given India cannot play with only five bowlers, they added an extra bowling option in the second encounter. It seems they will go ahead with the same line-up, which will once again be harsh on Samson but seems inevitable. For NZ, they went ahead with&nbsp;Michael Bracewell -- in place of Adam Milne -- and it will be interesting to see if they back him or go back to Adam Milne. Given India's inexperience in the bowling department, Kiwis will start as favourites in the third and final ODI.&nbsp;

After the three T20Is, the action moved to the three-match ODI series between India and hosts New Zealand. In the ODI series opener, held at Eden Park, Auckland, on Friday (November 25), the Black Caps rode on a splendid 145 not out from Tom Latham and captain Kane Williamson's steady 94 not out to chase down India's 306/7 and take a 1-0 lead.

Opting to bowl first, Williamson &amp; Co. had to struggle to get past Shikhar Dhawan-Shubman Gill. The opening pair added an impressive 124-run first-wicket stand before Lockie Ferguson&nbsp;removed Gill for 50 whereas stand-in captain Shikhar Dhawan fell for a 77-ball 72 off Tim Southee. Shreyas Iyer then stitched a vital wicket with Sanju Samson (a run-a-ball 36) after Ferguson removed Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav by bowling some hard lengths on a small ground. Iyer-Samson's 94-run fifth-wicket partnership took India closer to the 300-run mark before Washington Sundar's rapid cameo (16-ball 37*) took India to 306/7. Iyer top-scored with a calculative 76-ball 80.

In the run-chase, NZ started well before Finn Allen, Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell fell to leave hosts reeling at 88 for 3. Umran Malik, debuting in the format, impressed in his early overs before Latham took on every Indian bowler. India went with only five bowlers and paid the price after Latham-Willianson's partnership stretched further.

While the NZ skipper played a composed knock, Latham smashed Shardul Thakur, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal as the Kiwis chased down a par-score in Auckland. The duo stitched a record 221-run fourth-wicket stand to go past the finish line.

The opening pair added an impressive 124-run first-wicket stand before Lockie Ferguson removed Gill for 50 whereas stand-in captain Shikhar Dhawan fell for a 77-ball 72 off Tim Southee. IPL 2023 retention: Punjab Kings retains Shahrukh Khan, releases former captain

Captaining an IPL franchise isn't an easy job by any means. Over the years, many superstar cricketers have not been able to do justice to the role of captaincy. Many captains have been replaced after a few bad seasons.&nbsp;Mayank Agarwal is now&nbsp;the latest to join the list as Punjab Kings (PBKS) have appointed senior batter Shikhar Dhawan as the franchise's captain for IPL 2023.

Dhawan's appointment was confirmed after Punjab's team meeting on Wednesday (November 02) where the newly-appointed coach Trevor Bayliss also backed the move. PBKS' official Twitter handle shared a post and wrote, "#𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐒𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐝, 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐤𝐡𝐚𝐫 𝐃𝐡𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐮𝐧𝐣𝐚𝐛 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬!"

Speaking of Mayank, the right-hander didn't have an impressive start as IPL captain in the 2022 edition. He wasn't at his best with the bat, despite batting at different positions, and&nbsp;managed only 196 runs from 13 matches. It was the Indian opener's worst-ever season since being given the opening job by the Punjab franchise&nbsp;on a full-time basis.

Under Mayank, PBKS managed only seven victories from 14 encounters and finished in the sixth position in the points table. Overall, Bayliss-Dhawan&nbsp;have a huge task in hand to revamp the squad and take them to the playoffs for the first time since 2014.

Rohit Sharma-led India is set to kick off their campaign in the T20 World Cup 2022 edition with their first game versus arch-rivals Pakistan on October 23 at the iconic MCG, Melbourne. Team India reached Australia for the showpiece event early this month and have already played three warm-up games, with two against Western Australia XI.&nbsp;

Winning two of their three warm-up games, so far, India will meet New Zealand on October 19 (Wednesday) at Brisbane in their last practice game before their opening fixture in the main draw of the tournament. For India, they enter the ICC event as the No. 1 ranked side and have been in form in T20Is since their debacle in last year's edition. The likes of Rohit, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Shami, Suryakumar Yadav, etc. will be crucial to India's chances Down Under.

While the 15-man main squad and reserve list have plenty of match-winners for Team India, here's looking at Men in Blue's star-studded XI featuring players who are not part of the showpiece event Down Under:

India's missed-out XI: Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan (wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Venketesh Iyer, Deepak Chahar, Ravindra Jadeja, Umran Malik, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah

The above XI shows the depth of India's squad and the abundance of talent in the Indian camp. The experienced trio of Shikhar Dhawan, Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah missed out with the latter two being injured whereas Dhawan has been sidelined from T20Is. The younger lot such as Prithvi Shaw, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan are destined to take over from the likes of KL Rahul, Rohit and Kohli but for now, they didn't find a spot.&nbsp;

Chahar missed out again due to back issues after being named in the reserves. Meanwhile, Samson and Kuldeep are part of the second-stringed white-ball Indian team but weren't considered for the T20 WC. Meanwhile, Venkatesh Iyer went down the pecking order as soon as Hardik Pandya was deemed fully fit in early 2022.

Lastly, Umran has featured in only a handful of T20Is, indicating that he still needs to learn a lot and more exposure to be considered for such a marquee event.

From Shikhar Dhawan to Jasprit Bumrah: Star players who are not part of India's T20 World Cup squad

Shikhar Dhawan-led India demolished South Africa in the third and final ODI, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi, on Tuesday evening (October 11). After levelling the series with an impressive seven-wicket win in the second and penultimate ODI, Dhawan &amp; Co. locked horns with the Proteas with all to play for both the sides.

Opting to bowl first, India bundled out the David Miller-led SA for a paltry 99 in 27.1 overs, their fourth-lowest ODI score (lowest versus the Men in Blue). After Md Siraj-Washington Sundar's early strikes, and an economical spell from Avesh Khan, Kuldeep Yadav joined in and wreaked havoc by returning with match figures of 4.1-0-18-4. The wily spinner, who also accounted for 22 wickets in IPL 2022 (fifth overall), has had a good run in 2022. After his superlative performance versus South Africa in the ODI series decider, questions were raised as to why the 27-year-old isn't part of the Rohit Sharma-led India's T20 World Cup squad.

Nonetheless, Kuldeep isn't disappointed. In the post-match press conference, he said, "I am not disappointed about missing out on the World Cup because I am more focussed on the process. I am seeing how I can improve match by match. I am not disappointed as the ones who were selected are among the best."

On being asked whether he misses his partnership with Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep revealed, "It's a tricky question. He is in Australia for the T20 World Cup and my best wishes are with him. Hope he performs well and I keep performing in ODIs."

Kuldeep-starrer India beat SA by seven wickets by chasing down a paltry 100-run target in 19.1 overs. Shubhman Gill led the charge with the bat, with an impressive 57-ball 49, before Shreyas Iyer's 28 not out propelled the Men in Blue to a 2-1 series win.&nbsp;

'I am not disappointed' - Kuldeep Yadav reacts after not being part of India's T20 World Cup squad

India and South Africa have locked horns in the third and final ODI, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi, on Tuesday (October 11). After Shikhar Dhawan-led India's impressive seven-wicket series-levelling win in the second and penultimate encounter at Ranchi, on Sunday (October 09), both sides entered the series decider with all to play for. In the absence of regular skipper Temba Bavuma and vice-captain Keshav Maharaj, David Miller got the opportunity to captain the side for the first time in ODIs. However, the power-hitter's debut as ODI captain got off to a poor start as the Proteas bundled out for a paltry 99 in 27.1 overs.

Opting to bowl first, India rode on impressive opening spells from Md Siraj and Avesh Khan. While Siraj accounted for the wickets of&nbsp;Janneman Malan and Reeza Hendricks, Washington Sundar removed Quinton de Kock and captain Miller. Kuldeep Yadav then wreaked havoc by dismissing the lower order in a flash, returning with match figures of 4 for 18 in 4.1 overs. As a result, SA folded for their fourth-lowest ODI score. In addition, this is their lowest total against the Men in Blue.

In the mid-innings break, Kuldeep told the broadcasters, "Feeling happy to take four wickets, have taken four wickets after such a long time. I was trying something different before IPL, and I am enjoying my bowling since then. I missed the hat-trick, could have bowled quicker. Should have changed the angle. I think Washington bowled really well. The wicket was gripping, I tried to bowl seam-up deliveries, tried to mix it up with the pace, tried to set up the batters. I was working on my rhythm, I was a bit slower before my injury. I am not compromising with spin, just trying to work on my rhythm."

India are well on course for a terrific series win, amid the absence of many of their regular players. While Siraj accounted for the wickets of Janneman Malan and Reeza Hendricks, Washington Sundar removed Quinton de Kock and captain Miller. Kuldeep Yadav then wreaked havoc by dismissing the lower order in a flash, returning with match figures of 4 for 18 in 4.1 overs. As a result, SA folded for their fourth-lowest ODI score. 99 all-out! South Africa register lowest ODI score versus India after Kuldeep Yadav's 4-fer

Shikhar Dhawan-led India beat South Africa by seven wickets in the second and penultimate ODI at the JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi on Sunday evening (October 09). After losing the series opener by nine runs, India have now levelled the series with one game to go at the national capital, i.e. New Delhi on Tuesday evening (October 11).

With a host of regular players in Australia for the T20 World Cup, from October 16, Dhawan &amp; Co. came from behind to restrict SA for 278 for 7 in 50 overs, after Keshav Maharaj-led Proteas were well-placed at 215 for 4 in 38 overs. Post half centuries from Aiden Markram and Reeza Hendricks, Md Siraj's 3 for 38 restricted the visitors who chose to bat first despite dew set to make its presence felt in the second-half.

In reply, India were 48-2 but a solid 161-run third-wicket stand between centurion Shreyas Iyer (113 not out off 111 balls) and Ishan Kisha's 93 took the Men in Blue past the finish line. Iyer stayed till the end, with Sanju Samson unbeaten on 30, to take the home side to an easy win eventually. The right-hander has been in terrific form in ODIs in 2022, with four half-centuries and a ton (his second in the format). With his well-compiled knock helping India, Iyer joined Virat Kohli in a unique list.

Iyer joins Kohli &amp; Co.

Iyer became only the second Indian batter after Kohli to score an ODI ton at Ranchi. The former Indian captain has two centuries, both in ODIs, at the venue (one against Australia in 2019 and the other versus Sri Lanka in late 2014). Overall, Iyer became the fourth batter&nbsp;as the list also includes Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews and Australian opener Usman Khawaja who have scored hundreds at the venue.&nbsp;

At the post-match presentation, Iyer said, "When I went into bat, felt that the wicket was playing good. The talk between me and Ishan was to play the ball on merit, build a partnership. Tomorrow is going to be a travel day, and then the match. Let's see what is in store for me (regarding his fitness for next game). I'm not someone who changes according to the bowler. I am someone who changes on instinct and believing in myself."

Meanwhile, Dhawan thanked his counterpart Maharaj to have opted to bat first and said, "Worked perfectly well for us, thanks to Keshav that he chose to bat (smiles). Glad that dew came in at the right time. Ishan and Shreyas batted so well, that partnership was so nice to watch. It was coming on nicely, but it stayed low. Plan was to take on the bowlers in the first 10 overs as we knew it could get difficult in the middle overs. When the dew came, you could see that it got easier. Very satisfied with the bowling unit, they are all young and these are good learnings for them. Especially Shahbaz. All the young boys, I'm so proud that they showed so much maturity."

Ind vs SA, 2nd ODI: Shreyas Iyer joins Virat Kohli in unique list after 113 not out in Ranchi

Rohit Sharma-led India's T20 World Cup-bound players left for Australia last week. After finishing their three-match T20I series versus South Africa, which they&nbsp;won 2-1, Rohit &amp; Co. left for the marquee tournament with the Shikhar Dhawan-led Indian ODI locking horns with the Proteas in the 50-over series at home.

Losing the first ODI by nine runs, in pursuit of 250 in a 40-over contest, India had to win the second and penultimate encounter to keep the series alive. With many of their regulars in Australia for the T20 WC preparations, the talk was that Dhawan-led India's side is a second-stringed side or a B-team, hence, will find it difficult to level the series.

After India rode on Shreyas Iyer's 113 not out, Ishan Kishan's 93 and Md Siraj's 3 for 38 to win the second ODI by seven wickets, Kishan revealed what motivated India ahead of the Ranchi face-off on Sunday (October 9). Speaking at the post-match press conference, the swashbuckling left-hander said, "I heard people talking that we are the B-side, we are not so much capable of beating South Africa's full strength side. I heard these comments and we're really upset about it, so we wanted to play our A-game today."

'Heard we are the B-side' - Ishan Kishan on what inspired Shikhar Dhawan's India ahead of 2nd ODI vs SA

Shreyas Iyer struck a sublime century while Ishan Kishan displayed his brute force against a formidable South African attack to set up a series-levelling seven-wicket win for India in the second ODI here on Sunday. Mohammed Siraj led an inexperienced Indian bowling lineup brilliantly to restrict South Africa to 278/7 after the visitors opted to bat.

Iyer made his second ODI hundred (113 not out off 111) and shared a match-winning 161-run stand with Kishan (93 off84) to ensure a comfortable win in 45.5 overs for a second-string Indian team. The 24-year-old Kishan looked like a transformed batter and showed different layers of his batting by switching to beast mode after a responsible start.

The lefthander smashed seven sixes and four boundaries in his career-best knock from 84 balls, while Iyer played the perfect foil. The designated vice-captain of the series, Iyer, has been in top form in ODIs, having slammed one century and four fifties in his last six innings.

Locked one-all after two matches, both teams will play the series decider in Delhi on Tuesday. At India's optional nets ahead of the game, Ishan had made his intentions clear when he clobbered a loose ball with brute force, ramming into the grill of the MS Dhoni pavillion.

On match day, the stage was just perfect for the diminutive batter to boss at his homeground. India needed 231 from 41.1 overs when a classy-looking Shubman Gill (28; 26b) perished to a gravity-defying low catch by Rabada on his follow-through.

Kishan came in and was at his vigilant best. He ran hard for singles and overcame a hostile bowling spell from Nortje when he was clocking 145-plus clicks on a slow Ranchi wicket. The lefthander however did not panic as he reached 29 off 46 balls.

South Africa then started operating with spinners with stand-in skipper Maharaj looking to dismiss Kishan for a second successive time.

But Kishan took the attack on the left-arm spinner and smashed him for three sixes including two in four balls.
The only blip in his innings was when he mistimed one to Rabada but this time he dropped a sitter.

In the next delivery, Kishan took a blow on his elbow that seemingly unsettled him before he fell agonisingly short of a maiden century. Earlier, Aiden Markram (79 off 89 balls) and Reeza Hendricks (74 off 76) looked in control of the proceedings in the middle overs.

But Siraj triggered the collapse and also took a stunning forward running catch to dismiss a dangerous-looking Heinrich Klaasen (30).

He mixed up the slower ones intelligently, bowled with a tight line and length and did not even give the in-form David Miller (35 not out) a chance to put him away. He conceded only three runs in the 50th over to end with figures 10-1-38-3.

From being 169/3, which came courtesy a 129 run-a-ball partnership by Hendricks and Markram, South Africa lost three quick wickets with some clever field placements and bowling rotation by India skipper Shikhar Dhawan.

Even the in-form Miller struggled to get going at the death and Siraj came out on top as they scored just 57 runs from the last 10 overs with the loss of two wickets.

Debutant Shabaz Ahmed jumped in joy after bagging his maiden international wicket as he trapped Janneman Malan in front of the stumps.

It seemed a perfect start for India with the visitors' score reading 40/2 after 10 overs which had just seven boundaries on a dull and dry JSCA wicket.

But what followed was a composed and calculative approach by the middle-order duo of Markram and Hendricks who were happy to bide time, play out dot balls and forge a partnership.

From 20th over onwards, they stepped it up, picking odd boundaries every over and in no time they reached their respective fifties -- Hendricks in 58 balls, and Markram in 64 balls.

Hendricks smashed Kuldeep over wide long-on in the 27th over as they started to make their intentions clear.
But thankfully for India, Hendricks got out to a loose short-pitched delivery from Siraj.

It opened the gates for India and with some smart captaincy by Dhawan they managed to sneak in three wickets for 46 runs including that of a dangerous-looking Klaasen.

Iyer, Kishan slam brilliant knocks as India beat South Africa by 7 wickets in 2nd ODI to level series

While Rohit Sharma-led India's T20 World Cup team left for Australia, Shikhar Dhawan's second-string&nbsp;ODI side faced South Africa in the three-match ODI series opener on Thursday (October 7) in Lucknow. In a rain-curtailed ODI, Temba Bavuma's SA were asked to bat first. Quinton de Kock managed a promising 54-ball 48 but the Proteas were reduced to 110/4 before unbeaten fifties from Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller saw them post a competitive 249/4 in the 40-over contest.

In reply, India were on the back foot and reduced to 51-4 before a 37-ball 50 from Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson's unbeaten 86 took India close to the total, managing 240 for 8, losing&nbsp;by nine runs. After the clash, former South African speedster Dale Steyn admitted being nervous when Kagiso Rabada bowled a no-ball on the final ball of the penultimate over as he was aware of Samson's exploits.

"As soon as KG (Kagiso Rabada) bowled that no-ball in the last ball of his over, I was like, 'please don't let this happen'. Because you never know with someone like Sanju, especially with the form that he has got and the belief that he has. I watched him in the IPL, his ability to take down the bowlers and hit boundaries at will, especially in the last two overs of the game, is incredible," Steyn said in the post-match discussion on Star Sports.

"Shamsi was going to bowl the last over and he (Samson) knew he (Shamsi) had a rough day. I was nervous when KG (Rabada) bowled the no ball. Because Sanju is the kind of guy who has the potential of Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh), to hit those six sixes and get the team across the line when it needs 30+," Styen said.

Eventually, India needed a mammoth 30 runs off the last six deliveries of the match after Rabada conceded only seven runs in the 39th over. Samson went big, taking on Tabraiz Shamsi who ended with match figures of 8-0-89-1, and smacked 6,4,4,4 but Dhawan &amp; Co. fell short by nine runs.&nbsp;

At the post-match presentation, Dhawan said, "Quite proud of the way the boys played the game, we didn't get a good start, the way Shreyas, Samson and Shardul batted was excellent. We gave away too many runs on a wicket that swung and spun, the fielding wasn't great, but this was a good learning experience for us."

'He has Yuvraj Singh's potential of hitting six sixes' - Dale Steyn lauds Sanju Samson after Lucknow ODI

Shikhar Dhawan-led India locked horns with South Africa in the first of the three-match T20I series on Thursday (October 06) in Lucknow. After asking the visitors to bat first and reducing them to 110/4, Indian bowlers were made to toil hard as unbeaten half-centuries from Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller took Proteas to a respectable 240-4 in a rain-curtailed 40-over contest.

In reply, India were on the back foot and reeling at 51-4 before Shreyas Iyer's 37-ball 50 and Sanju Samson's 86 not out, off 63 deliveries, instilled a fightback from the Men in Blue camp. While Iyer left with India being reduced to 118 for 5, Samson stayed till the end to keep India's hopes alive. He stitched a valuable 93-run sixth-wicket stand with Shardul Thakur (33) before losing partners at regular intervals. The right-hander continued to take his chances, with 30 needed off the last six balls, but was too much to ask from him alone.

After the match and his impressive knock, Samson told the reporters, "Thoda time wicket pe guzaarna bhot acha pasand karta hu aur Indian jersey pehen k to thoda aur bhi special he ho jaata hai. Magar khelte hain toh hum match jitaane ke liye, toh thoda sa reh gaya. Do shots reh gaya. Toh agli baar achi tareh karne dekhunga. Par apne contribution se sehmat hu&nbsp;(I like to spend some time in the middle. Playing in the Indian jersey, it becomes even more special. We always want to win, however, we just fell short. I fell short by two shots. I'm still satisfied with my contribution)."

WATCH: 'Fell short by two shots' - Sanju Samson reacts after his 86* in vain in 1st ODI vs South Africa

BCCI selection committee announced India's 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup 2022 edition, to be held in Australia from October-November, early this month. The main squad features some big names whereas they mentioned Md Shami, Ravi Bishnoi, Deepak Chahar and Shreyas Iyer in the reserves.

Sanju Samson's omission left many of his fans disappointed whereas some former cricketers backed the decision although some felt it was harsh on him. Recently, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly mentioned that Samson, who captains the Rajasthan Royals (RR), 'just missed' being a part of the squad.

"Sanju is playing well. He played for India but just missed the World Cup. He is in the Indian team's plans. He is now a part of the ODI team against SA. Also he has done well in the IPL franchise and he is the Captain also," said the former Indian captain ahead of India's T20I series versus South Africa at home.

Samson recently led India A in a three-match ODI series versus New Zealand at home. India A whitewashed the Black Caps whereas Samson also returned with scores of 29*, 37 and 54. He will look to remain consistent going ahead to break into the main squad and cement his place for a long period.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, India were dealt with a major blow on Thursday (September 29) as Jasprit Bumrah is likely to miss the T20 WC due to stress back fracture. With all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja already ruled out, Rohit Sharma-led India will need the bowling unit to stand tall incase Bumrah is officially sidelined. As per reports, Shami or Chahar might get a look-in the main squad with no Bumrah. On the other hand, Mohammed Siraj might replace Bumrah in India's squad for the ongoing T20Is against SA.

Here's India's final 15-man squad for T20 World Cup 2022:

Rohit Sharma (C), KL Rahul (VC), Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Rishabh Pant (WK), Dinesh Karthik (WK), Hardik Pandya, R&nbsp;Ashwin, Yuzvendra&nbsp;Chahal, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh

Standby players -&nbsp;Mohammed&nbsp;Shami, Shreyas Iyer, Ravi Bishnoi, Deepak Chahar

Bumrah's absence will surely lead to some changes in the main squad and the standby list.

BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly names star player who 'just missed' a spot in T20 World Cup squad

Sanju Samson's omission from India's 15-man squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup, in Australia, made a lot of noise. He was not even named in the reserves, which many felt was a harsh call due to&nbsp;his free-flowing approach with the bat. After his omission, BCCI named him as the captain for India A's three ODIs versus New Zealand at home.

After leading India A to a 3-0 whitewash over the Kiwis, it seems like a big promotion is on the cards for Samson. The Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper is likely to be named as India's vice-captain for the upcoming three-match ODI series versus South Africa at home, starting on October 6.

As per ANI, Samson is in-line to be Shikhar Dhawan's deputy for the Proteas ODIs. After Rohit Sharma-led India's three T20Is versus Temba Bavuma &amp; Co., a second-string&nbsp;Indian side -- under Dhawan's captaincy (all but confirmed)&nbsp;-- will host three 50-over games versus South Africa whereas the T20 WC-bound players will leave for Australia for the upcoming showpiece event Down Under.

With the likes of Rohit, Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant, etc. being out of action from the three ODIs, Samson has emerged as a strong contender to join the leadership group for the SA ODIs. Apart from him, Shubman Gill is another candidate who can act as Dhawan's deputy.&nbsp;

The BCCI selection committee is expected to announce India's second-stringed squad sooner than later. Talking about Samson, the swashbuckling right-hander has played only seven ODIs for Team India. He was part of India's white-ball tour of West Indies but wasn't part of the Rohit-led Men in Blue's Asia Cup campaign and the Australia T20Is at home. Samson has led Rajasthan's IPL franchise in two full editions and guided them to their first-ever final during IPL 2022, where they lost to eventual winners Gujarat Titans (GT).
