Trump-Putin talks: US, Russian leaders to hold one-on-one meeting in Alaska—Check timings and agenda inside

US President Donald Trump on Thursday (August 14) stressed that tariffs against India may have influenced Russian President Vladimir Putin to agree to talks in Alaska. In an interview with Fox News Radio, Trump hinted that this could be a "probable" reason for Putin to meet him.The US president stressed that "everything has an impact", adding that secondary tariffs against India "essentially took them out of buying oil from Russia."Notably, Trump imposed massive tariffs on India earlier this month. And getting pretty close to China, China is the largest. And as you know, there was something in the works for that," he said.Trump further said that later, Russia called and said they wanted to meet him."Certainly, when you lose your second largest customer and you're probably going to lose your first largest customer, I think that probably has a role," the US president said.Trump continued saying that Russia respects the US now, adding that he didn't respect it under Biden.Stressing that the US is the "hottest country anywhere in the world", Trump started lauding America as he said, “Everybody’s moving back to the United States. Is India the reason behind Putin agreeing for peace talks? Trump REVEALS what led to Alaska meeting

The Russia-Ukraine conflict is getting terrifying as time progresses. To cope with Russian drone threats, specifically explosive FPV drones, Ukrainian forces have started adding crude "cage armour" over vehicles like Humvees and even M1 Abrams tanks. Both Russia and Ukraine have started to protect themselves with an extensive DIY aesthetic that resembles the post-apocalyptic, dystopian action film ‘Mad Max’. A Humvee near Donetsk feature a cage structure with metal spikes- that are designed to repel drone strikes.

Traditional armour is no longer enough. A Kyiv-based team led by ‘Musa’, a former doctor, has built one-off buggies with welded frames, oversized wheels, and decorative teeth on the grille. These serve as rapid response, transport, and evacuation vehicles. The speed of the evolving drone technology in the span of the war has compelled both Russia and Ukraine to improvise. Last month, a video surfaced which shows a tank shielded by a massive cage, which reportedly needed 60 drones to take out. The armouring effort includes integrating metal cages, netting, chains, protruding spikes, metal plates, and more, sometimes alongside additional explosive reactive armour.

Pick up trucks such as Mitsubishi L200, Ford Rangers, Toyota Hilux, are weaponised with machine guns, rocket launchers and anti-air weapons, to act as agile militarised platforms. The long, drawn-out war has pushed Ukraine to the brink. To save lives and money, hybrid armoured vehicles named “Frankentanks” are constructed, combining the hull of a T-62 tank with a turret of a BMP-2 armed with a 30 mm 2A42 autocanon; these are born not out of flamboyancy but out of necessity.

The surge in drone warfare has led to the need for creative solutions for both sides. Caged armour can be seen as one of them. But these don't come with drawbacks, at times limiting mobility and visibility. These improvisations are salvaging something out of nothing, turning civilians into military parts and creating life-saving military tools on the frontline.

With the rapid inclusion of cheap drones in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, both nations are seeking creative and resourceful solutions, thus turning existing military as well as civilian vehicles into post-apocalyptic war machines.

'Putin won't stop, talks are just a farce': Ukrainians react to Trump-Putin Alaska meet without Ukraine

United States President Donald Trump will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. Both the leaders will discuss the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war with the White House, saying that it will be a 'listening exercise for Trump. The US president earlier said that he would know in 'two minutes' if Putin wants to end the war with Ukraine or not. The US has hinted that the peace deal between Ukraine and Russia would include 'land swapping,' a proposal that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has denied. The exact location for the meeting between Trump and Putin was revealed by two White House officials in conversation with CNN. The US military location houses an Air Force base and an Army fort, which merged in 2010. Earlier, Trump mistakenly said that he would go to Russia to meet Putin. The CNN said that the White House did not want Putin to be at a US military base, but organisers suggested this as the apt location. Both the Kremlin and the White House confirmed the summit. The US had proposed a tri-party meeting between Putin, Trump and Zelensky, but Putin expressed his reservations about the same. Trump has now said that he would know withing two minutes of the meeting with Putin if he is interested in ending the Russia-Ukraine war. This will be the first in-person summit between Trump and Putin after they last held the Helsinki Summit in 2018 in Finland. The US military location houses an Air Force base and an Army fort, which merged in 2010. Earlier, Trump mistakenly said that he would go to Russia to meet Putin. The CNN said that the White House did not want Putin to be at a US military base, but organisers suggested this as the apt location. The final word from the Trump admin is not out yet. Once part of the Russian Empire, Alaska still bears traces of Russian cultural influence, including the Russian Orthodox Church. The US purchased the territory in 1867 for $7.2 million, a deal mocked at the time as "Seward's folly." The location may appeal to Trump’s affinity for grand gestures.. Trump has also been invited to visit Russia, suggesting a follow-up trip to Moscow is possible if optics play a key role. The White House’s venue choice subtly nods to shared history while offering a neutral US setting with strategic symbolism. Trump-Putin meeting It was confirmed on Friday (Aug 8) that Trump will meet with Putin on August 15 to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine. They met briefly at the 2019 G20 Summit in Osaka, but no formal summit was held.

US President Donald Trump will meet Russian President Putin at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska to discuss the Russia-Ukraine war. The White House calls it a “listening exercise.” Final confirmation of the venue is pending.

United States Donald Trump, during a press conference on Monday (Aug 11), said that he will be going to Russia to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin. He also said that he will know about Putin's intention regarding the Ukraine war in "two minutes." However, his statement saying that he would travel to Russia was quickly picked up on social media, with netizens asking about the 'real' plans.
Was Alaska a part of Russia?
The United States bought Alaska from Russia 150 years ago. The story begins when Danish explorer Vitus Bering discovered Alaska accidentally during the exploration of the Bering Strait. He was on an expedition for Tsarist Russia. According to AFP, in 1799, Tsar Paul I established the Russian-American Company to take advantage of the lucrative fur trade. However, the indigenous people were targeted, and the seals and sea otters were overexploited. As the economy went down, the Russian Empire decided to let go of Alaska. In 1867, the Russian Empire sold the territory to Washington for $7.2. At that time, the purchase was criticised and termed as 'Seward's folly' after the deal's mastermind, William Seward. However, the Russian influence in the area stayed as the Russian Orthodox Church was already established in Alaska. Famously stated by former Alaska governor Sarah Palin in 2008 - "You can see Russia from land here in Alaska." While it is not possible to see Russia from the Alaskan mainland, two islands facing each other in the Bering Strait are separated by just 2.5 miles. However, Russia does not have any plan to reclaim Alaska with Putin saying in 2014 that Alaska is "too cold".
Trump-Putin meeting over Ukraine-Russia war
It was confirmed on Friday (Aug 8) that Trump will meet with Putin on August 15 to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine. The Kremlin confirmed the summit in an online statement. The two leaders will "focus on discussing options for achieving a long-term peaceful resolution to the Ukrainian crisis," Putin aide Yuri Ushakov said. Trump said that the highly anticipated meeting would take place in Alaska. He also suggested that the deal would include some exchange of land. Earlier, the US had proposed that there should be a tri-party meeting between Putin, Trump and Zelensky. Russian President Putin said he is ready to meet Trump, but expressed his reservations about meeting Zelensky at this stage. Now, critics say that if reports are true and if Witkoff did not understand Putin's stance on land-swap, then the meeting between Trump and Putin might turn out to be inconclusive despite both leaders meeting after 2018.

US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are set to meet on 15 August in Alaska to discuss a controversial peace proposal that would see Ukraine give up more territory to Russia, the Kyiv Independent reported.According to a source in Ukraine’s President’s Office, Putin presented the plan to Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, during a meeting in Moscow earlier this week. Under the proposal, Kyiv would pull its forces from two partly occupied regions, Donetsk and Luhansk. In return, Russia would withdraw its troops from parts of Kharkiv and Sumy oblasts in Ukraine’s northeast, where its forces currently hold limited territory. Also read: ‘Not an era of war’: India welcomes Trump-Putin Alaska talks; Zelensky warns against ‘decisions without Ukraine’
Moscow’s demands in the south
The source told the Kyiv Independent that Putin also indicated Russia would accept the current front lines in southern Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, where Moscow controls most of the land but not the regional capitals. Ukraine, however, has no intention of accepting such terms. “Who would even give the military such an order to withdraw?” the official said, calling it a Russian plan disguised as a peace offer. “The Russians are now trying to spread the word that we are rejecting ‘Trump’s wonderful plan,’ but the thing is that it’s the Russians’ plan, territory in exchange for a ceasefire.”
Trump signals support for ‘territory swap’
Trump’s quick announcement of his upcoming meeting with Putin has led some in Kyiv to believe Washington has “de facto” agreed to consider the proposal. On 8 August, hours before confirming the meeting, Trump told reporters that a peace deal could involve “some swapping of territories”. He said, “Well you’re looking at territory that’s been fought over for three-and-a-half years… We’re going to get some back. We’re going to get some switched. There will be some swapping of territories to the betterment of both.”
Zelensky rejects giving up any land
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responded firmly on 9 August, saying the country’s borders are protected by its constitution. “No one will deviate from this, and no one will be able to. Ukrainians will not gift their land to the occupier,” he declared. He stressed that peace must be “dignified” and urged Kyiv’s partners to respect that principle.
Diplomatic flurry ahead of Alaska talks
The Kyiv Independent reported that senior officials from Ukraine, the UK, the US, and the EU are due to encounter in London on 9 August to prepare for the Trump–Putin talks. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed the gathering after speaking with Zelensky. In recent days, Zelensky has held calls with leaders from the UK, France, Denmark, Estonia, and the EU. A diplomat from one G7 nation told the Kyiv Independent that “there are a lot of discussions happening right now.”
Russia’s territorial control
Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 and declared four more Ukrainian regions, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson, as its own in 2022 after launching its full-scale invasion. These moves have been widely condemned internationally. As of August 2025, Russia holds almost all of Luhansk Oblast, over 70% of Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson, and controls Donetsk city. Its current offensive is focused on capturing more of Donetsk, particularly the cities of Pokrovsk and Kostiantynivka.

Trump and Putin will meet on August 15 in Alaska to discuss a peace proposal involving Ukraine ceding territory, with partial Russian troop withdrawals from Kharkiv and Sumy in exchange.

US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are set to meet on 15 August in Alaska to discuss a controversial peace proposal that would see Ukraine give up more territory to Russia, the Kyiv Independent reported. According to a source in Ukraine’s President’s Office, Putin presented the plan to Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, during a meeting in Moscow earlier this week. Under the proposal, Kyiv would pull its forces from two partly occupied regions, Donetsk and Luhansk. In return, Russia would withdraw its troops from parts of Kharkiv and Sumy oblasts in Ukraine’s northeast, where its forces currently hold limited territory. Ukraine, however, has no intention of accepting such terms. “Who would even give the military such an order to withdraw?” the official said, calling it a Russian plan disguised as a peace offer. “The Russians are now trying to spread the word that we are rejecting ‘Trump’s wonderful plan,’ but the thing is that it’s the Russians’ plan, territory in exchange for a ceasefire.” Trump signals support for ‘territory swap’ Trump’s quick announcement of his upcoming meeting with Putin has led some in Kyiv to believe Washington has “de facto” agreed to consider the proposal. On 8 August, hours before confirming the meeting, Trump told reporters that a peace deal could involve “some swapping of territories”. He said, “Well you’re looking at territory that’s been fought over for three-and-a-half years… We’re going to get some back. We’re going to get some switched. There will be some swapping of territories to the betterment of both.” Zelensky rejects giving up any land Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responded firmly on 9 August, saying the country’s borders are protected by its constitution. “No one will deviate from this, and no one will be able to. Ukrainians will not gift their land to the occupier,” he declared. He stressed that peace must be “dignified” and urged Kyiv’s partners to respect that principle. Diplomatic flurry ahead of Alaska talks The Kyiv Independent reported that senior officials from Ukraine, the UK, the US, and the EU are due to encounter in London on 9 August to prepare for the Trump–Putin talks. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed the gathering after speaking with Zelensky. In recent days, Zelensky has held calls with leaders from the UK, France, Denmark, Estonia, and the EU. Russian President Vladimir Putin's special envoy Kirill A Dmitriev, confirmed that he will meet United States President Donald Trump next week. Earlier, Trump hinted that he could meet Russian President Putin as soon as next week to discuss the war in Ukraine. The White House also said that Trump is “open” to the idea of a meeting with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. In remarks on Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that Russian officials had expressed interest in meeting with Trump. Leavitt did not say when or where such a meeting could take place. The statement came after Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff met Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday (August 6). Witkoff arrived in Russia, just two days ahead of the August 8 deadline set by Trump for Russia to reach a ceasefire deal with Ukraine. The US president has previously said that he is committed to helping bring the war in Ukraine to an end. He initially promised to stop the conflict on “day one” of his presidency. “The Russians expressed their desire to meet with President Trump, and the president is open to meeting with both President Putin and President Zelenskyy,” Leavitt told members of the press. While hosting Apple CEO Tim Cook in the Oval Office later that day, Trump answered vaguely but favourably. “Well, there’s a very good prospect that they will, and we haven’t determined where, but we had some very good talks with President Putin today. And there’s a very good chance that we could be ending the round, ending the end of that road. There’s a good chance that there will be a meeting very soon,” Trump said. However, when pressed on whether a ceasefire deal was on the horizon, Trump expressed less optimism. “I’ve been disappointed before with this one,” he replied.

Witkoff meets Putin
Meanwhile, Putin held "constructive" talks with Witkoff in Moscow over the Ukraine conflict, the Kremlin said Wednesday after the three-hour meeting. "A quite useful and constructive conversation took place," Putin's aide Yuri Ushakov said, adding that as well as Ukraine, Russia-US strategic cooperation was discussed. In a social media post, Trump said Witkoff held a “highly productive” meeting with Putin and that “great progress was made!” Additionally, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a TV interview that the US now has a better understanding of what conditions would be required for Russia to end the war. “For the first time perhaps since this administration began, we have some concrete examples of the kinds of things that Russia would ask for in order to end the war,” Rubio said in an interview with Fox Business Network’s “Kudlow,” adding that questions of territory would be a key part of any deal.

What Zelensky said after Witkoff-Putin meet
Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky said he and Trump agree that the war in Ukraine “must end,” following a high-level meeting in Moscow between Putin and Witkoff. “Right on my way from our brigades here in Sumy region, I spoke with President Trump. And it must be done honestly,” Zelensky wrote on X. He said European leaders were also on the call and thanked them for their support, stressing that Ukraine would “definitely defend its independence” while seeking a “lasting and reliable peace.”
Trump's tariff war over Russian oil
Trump has been targeting the countries that are trading with Russia. He imposed an additional 25 per cent tariff on India for buying Russian oil. After the new levy, India will face the highest tariff of 50 per cent, along with Brazil. He has also warned of secondary sanctions and said that he may impose tariffs on China as well for buying Russian oil. "Could happen," Trump told reporters, after saying he expected to announce more secondary sanctions aimed at pressuring Russia to end its war in Ukraine. "It may happen ... I can't tell you yet," Trump said. “We did it with India. We're doing it probably with a couple of others. One of them could be China,” the US president added. On being asked why he is signalling out India while there are other countries that are buying Russian oil, Trump answered, “It's only been 8 hours. So let's see what happens. You're going to see a lot more...You're going to see so many secondary sanctions.”

The Russian defence ministry confirmed that they have attacked the gas transportation facilities in Ukraine. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that it was an attempt to undermine Ukrainian preparations for winter, according to a Reuters report. “This was a deliberate blow to our preparations for the heating season, absolutely cynical, like every Russian blow to the energy sector,” Zelenskyy said on Telegram. Notably, Ukraine has faced a major gas shortage since a series of devastating Russian missile strikes this year, significantly reducing domestic gas production.

Despite US President Donald Trump's newly imposed penalties on top of a 25 per cent tariff for its trade relations with Russia, Indian oil refiners, as per reports, continue to source oil from Russian suppliers, suggest reports. The Indian oil refiners' decision is reportedly based on the price, grade of crude, inventories, logistics, and other economic factors and has nothing to do with the prevailing political atmosphere. Previously, on Friday (Aug 1), speaking on similar lines, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, while speaking about media reports that some Indian oil firms had paused Russian imports, said he was not aware of any such developments. He noted that India's broad approach to energy sourcing requirements depends on "what is available in the market and the prevailing global situation."
Why is Russian oil in the headlines, and what does India have to do with it?
On Thursday (Jul 31), Trump signed an executive order imposing new tariffs on dozens of its trade partners. This included a 25 per cent tariff rate and a penalty on India. The tariffs come amid growing criticism from Washington over India's continued imports of discounted Russian oil, despite Western sanctions related to the Ukraine war. However, as per an ANI report citing sources, despite US' pressure, India continues to source oil from Russian suppliers. As per the report, this is because Moscow is the world's second-largest crude oil producer with an output of around 9.5 mb/d (nearly 10 per cent of global demand). It is also the second-largest exporter, shipping about 4.5 mb/d of crude and 2.3 mb/d of refined products. In March 2022, amid fears of Russian oil getting pushed out of the market, Brent crude prices soared to US $137 per barrel."In this challenging environment, India, as the world’s third-largest energy consumer with 85% crude oil import dependence, strategically adapted its sourcing to secure affordable energy while fully adhering to international norms," said the news agency's unnamed sources. They added that Russian oil has never been sanctioned. Instead, the nation was subjected to a G7/EU price cap mechanism that is designed to limit revenue while making sure global supplies flowed uninterrupted. Calling India's purchases legitimate and in line with international norms, they added that "Had India not absorbed discounted Russian crude combined with OPEC+ production cuts of 5.86 mb/d, global oil prices could have surged well beyond the March 2022 peak of US$137/bbl, intensifying inflationary pressures worldwide".This, they said, means that India's energy decisions, while being guided by the nation's interests, also contributed positively to global energy stability and kept oil flowing, prices stable, and markets balanced, while fully respecting international frameworks.
