'Number of subs in oceans...': Trump's nuclear submarines threat 'not taken seriously' in Russia - What Russian lawmaker said

In modern warfare, sleek and stealthy fighter jets and supersonic missiles are being replaced by a low-cost buzzing drone with a propeller. The Iranian Shahed-136 is proven to be a game-changer. Often dubbed a ‘Kamikaze drone’ has emerged as one of the most lethal weapons in asymmetric warfare. It has been used widely from Russia, Ukraine, to Iran-backed militia in the Middle East despite its relatively unsophisticated design.
Some of the best cases of Shahed-136 drone
The most prominent and large-scale use of the Iranian Shahed-136 was by Russia in Ukraine, causing widespread power outages and civilian disruptions during the winter. For example, in late 2022 and early 2023, coordinated Russian attacks using swarms of Shaheed-136 crippled power grids in Kyiv, Odesa, and Kharkiv.Another example is, 2019 use by Houthi Rebels of ( probably an earlier version of Shahed-136) to target the Saudi Arabian Abqaiq–Khurais oil field, cutting down its production capacity by half.

Abqaiq–Khurais oil field

Why the Shahed-136 drone is so deadly?
The 11-foot-long and 8-foot-wide Shaheed-136 drone weighs about 200 kilograms and flies at a speed of 185 km/h, and with 30–50 kg of warhead, explodes into the target like it is on a suicide mission. Thus, it is called a Kamikaze drone. It flies low and slow, often below radar coverage, can extend up to 1,000 to 2,500 kilometres range long inside the enemy lines and strikes with deadly precision. The engine is loud and rough and can be heard coming from far away. But it can be launched in a swarm and overwhelm enemy defences, as it is cheap $20,000–$50,000. When compared to the surface-to-air missiles, fighter jets, it takes $400,000 to $4 million or more to take down one drone. It's like trying to stop a bicycle with a sports car. These are frequently used to target power grids, civilian infrastructure, and military targets, especially in Ukraine, thus a significant tool of psychological warfare. It's lethal not because it's technologically superior but because it's cheap.

Iran's Shahed-136 kamikaze drone is redefining modern warfare – cheap, deadly, and hard to stop. Here's why it's a game-changer in global conflicts.

Also read: ‘We need ten Patriots’: Inside Germany’s billion-dollar IRIS-T systems shield for Ukraine, and why Kyiv still wants US weapons ‘I don’t know if it’s going to affect Russia’ The president hinted that the US would respond with economic measures if Russia did not act. “We’re going to put on tariffs and stuff,” he said. “I don’t know if it’s going to affect Russia because obviously he wants to keep the war going.” Trump also said that he has not heard back from Putin on the ultimatum, “I haven’t had any response. It’s a shame.” Kremlin takes note, Medvedev hits back The Kremlin confirmed that it had seen Trump’s remarks. Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters, “We took note of President Trump’s statement yesterday,” but added that he would “like to avoid any assessments.” Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev, who now serves as deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, responded sharply on X. “Trump’s playing the ultimatum game with Russia: 50 days or 10,” Medvedev wrote. “He should remember 2 things: 1. Russia isn’t Israel or even Iran. 2. Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war. Not between Russia and Ukraine, but with his own country. Don’t go down the Sleepy Joe road!” Trump says talks are useless while attacks continue Trump expressed frustration at what he called Putin’s empty promises. “We have such nice conversations, such respectful and nice conversations, and then people die the following night… with a missile going into a town and hitting,” he said. “I want to be generous, but we just don’t see any progress being made,” Trump added. “I’m not so interested in talking anymore.” In recent months, the White House has grown increasingly frustrated as Russia has ignored ceasefire efforts and intensified attacks on Ukrainian cities.

President Trump warned Russia to end its war in Ukraine within 10 days or face new US sanctions, expressing strong disappointment in President Putin and shortening his previous ultimatum.

US President Donald had earlier in the month given a 50-day ultimatum to Russia to end hostilities with Ukraine. But Trump was growing impatient at Russia's reluctance to negotiate a peace. On Monday, he reduced the time frame from 50 days to a 10-12-day period. "I've spoken to President Putin a lot, I've gotten along with him very well," he said, adding that Putin “goes out and starts launching rockets into some city, like Kyiv, and kills a lot of people in a nursing home or whatever, you have bodies lying all over the street.”The US had threatened to impose a 100 per cent tariff on Russia and its trading partners unless an agreement on resolving the Ukraine conflict was achieved within 50 days. The US had also continued to send weapons to Kyiv as long as the EU vows to pay for it.

Russia unfazed by Trump's ultimatum – 'Every threat is a step towards war'

The United States President Donald Trump is pressuring Russian President Vladimir Putin for immediate peace in Ukraine, but the latter doesn't seem to be interested, and according to an expert, he might be preparing to invade another country. Trump initially set a 50-day timeline for Putin to enter negotiations, although on Monday (28 July), he changed it to "10 or 12 days". He has warned that if Putin doesn't take the necessary steps, Russia risks facing sanctions. The Ukraine war has been going on since February 2022, with no end in sight. Trump is growing increasingly frustrated with Putin for not taking steps to end the situation. Meanwhile, US intelligence expert Rebekah Koffler wrote in The Telegraph, "As a military intelligence analyst specialising in Putin’s thinking and Russian military strategy, I agree with Rutte’s assessment about Russia’s readiness for another offensive military campaign in just a few years." She added that it is unlikely to be a European country, and Putin might attack a post-Soviet state. "I’m less convinced that a NATO country is likely to be the Kremlin’s next target, unless the alliance directly intervenes in Ukraine by deploying troops onto the battlefield." Ukraine will receive 11 additional IRIS-T air defence systems from Germany, bringing the total to 18, according to Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Oleksii Makeiev. The American president said he was "very disappointed" by his Russian counterpart. "I'm going to reduce that 50 days that I gave him to a lesser number, because I think I already know the answer to what's going to happen," Trump said. He added that the new deadline for Putin is 10-12 days from July 28. This came after Russia and Ukraine met on July 23 in Istanbul for a third round of peace talks. The previous two rounds did not yield the desired results. Reacting to Trump's statement, Ukraine praised him as the Ukrainian presidential aide Andriy Yermak said on social media, "Thanks to President Trump for standing firm and delivering a clear message of peace through strength." "When America leads with strength, others think twice," the statement added.
A ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war?
The American president also talked about the ongoing Israel-Hamas war in Gaza and said that the Palestinian militant group was unlikely to release the remaining 20 Israeli hostages. "That's like their shield," Trump said.He further said that a ceasefire might be possible in the war. He said he has told the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to approach the ongoing conflict in a "different way." Moreover, the US president continued crediting himself for the ceasefire negotiation in previous wars - like the India-Pakistan conflict, as he said if he was not around, there would be "six major wars going on."
‘Those children look very hungry’
Trump, who was in Scotland for a trade deal with the EU, met the British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on July 28. When he was asked if he agreed with Netanyahu's claim that there was no starvation in Gaza, Trump said, “I mean, based on television, I would say not particularly because those children look very hungry.” Starmer intervened and added, "It's a humanitarian crisis. It's an absolute catastrophe. I think people in Britain are revolted in seeing what they're seeing on their screens."

Amid the escalating Russia-Ukraine war, North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un has instructed the Pyongyang military to prepare for a "real war" during a recent artillery firing exercise, according to the state media. He has urged his armed forces to remain combat-ready. This comes as North Korea seeks to deepen ties with Russia and strengthen military cooperation. Ukrainian and Russian delegations met in Istanbul on Wednesday (July 23) for a third round of peace talks. The meeting, which lasted less than an hour, ended with both sides agreeing to a prisoner swap but showed little sign of major progress.
Zelensky wants face-to-face meeting with Putin
Rustem Umerov, Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, led Kyiv’s delegation and said they proposed a summit between President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin before the end of August. “We are working on priority issues. Our priority is always people, ceasefire and meeting of leaders,” Umerov said after the talks. Also read: 'Total mobilisation': Putin preparing for world war? Russia also offered Ukraine 24 to 48-hour ceasefires. He added that Russia proposed forming three working groups to meet online to deal with political, military, and humanitarian issues. Russia-Ukraine peace talks: Russian delegation on the way to Istanbul, Kremlin expects 'difficult talks' with Kyiv

Russia is preparing for a large-scale war and has launched its biggest weapons programme since the Soviet era, Ukraine’s military intelligence chief has warned. Speaking at a meeting of Ukrainian ambassadors on 22 July, Kyrylo Budanov said Moscow intends to spend $1.1 trillion over the next 11 years on rearmament. “There is a total mobilisation of politics, economy, and society of the Russian Federation to be ready for the upcoming large-scale war,” Budanov said. Also read: Is Russia about to ban WhatsApp? Russia losing hope? Says not expecting any ‘miraculous breakthroughs’ in Ukraine talks

Derek Huffman, an American who relocated to Russia to prevent his daughters from being exposed to fluid gender norms and "woke" culture in the US, is now being sent to the front line to fight Ukraine. His wife, DeAnna Huffman, said in a vlog on YouTube that he hardly received any training, which was all in Russian. The Telegraph reported that the Huffmans live in the small town of Istra near Moscow. The couple has three daughters and came to Russia as part of the “shared values” visa scheme, which calls for foreigners who reject “destructive neoliberal ideology” to live in the country. Initially, Derek agreed to join the military in a non-combat role. He thought of starting as a welder and moving on to become a war correspondent. But, now he has been sent near the frontlines despite having no experience as a soldier and limited understanding of the Russian language. Derek feels he was being "thrown to the wolves" because all the training was in Russian. The family is now leaning on faith for him to return safely.
Woke gender norms, talk about gay and lesbians at school, prompted family to leave US
The family was prompted to leave the US because of the liberal attitude around gender norms. Their shift became big news in Russia, where they got a lot of media coverage. Derek Huffman told Russia Today that after they moved to Texas from Arizona, one of their daughters, Sophia, was told to talk about lesbian topics at school. The family was uncomfortable with it. Then, Sophia learnt about lesbians from a girl in her class. Even though she did not understand much about it, the family was convinced that they had to change something. The inspiration came during a trip to Moscow in 2023, where they saw traditional family values. “The city was cleaner, safer, and more orderly than we ever imagined. Most importantly, we found a place that respected our values – where we finally felt at home,” Huffman said. Derek said that he wanted to earn his place in Russian society and did not wish for handouts. He even pointed to the migrants in America who "come there just like that, do not assimilate, and at the same time want free handouts." DeAnna Huffman says they were misled. “When he signed up and had all of that done, he was told he would not be training for two weeks and going straight to the front lines,” she said. In the vlog, she admitted that they have had some "amazing adventures" since moving to Russia, but there have been challenges. “Being alone in a new country, raising kids, and trying to stay strong has tested me in ways I never imagined,” she said. They settled in the “American village”, a settlement in Istra created by US expat and blogger Tim Kirby, who has been in the country for 20 years. He describes it as a refuge for Americans fleeing “liberal gender norms”. https://www.wionews.com/videos/russia-ukraine-war-russia-unleashes-retaliatory-strikes-on-kyiv-as-peace-talks-crumble-1753122586687/embed A Telegram channel named "Save that little girls” was linked to their YouTube channel. However, the link has now been deleted. It calls on the US government to "save the family". The post is accompanied with a photo of DeAnna Huffman and her daughters crying in the street. However, it is not clear whether the Huffman family created the group or someone else did.

An American family moved to Russia because of the exposure to fluid gender norms in the US. Teachers asked their daughter to talk about lesbianism at school. She later heard about it from her classmates. The Huffmans did not want to bring up their daughters in this environment.

Woke gender norms, talk about gay and lesbians at school, prompted family to leave US The family was prompted to leave the US because of the liberal attitude around gender norms.

'140 flights cancelled, 130 redirected': Russian airports shut down 10 times in 24 hours amid record Ukraine drone strikes

This week, reports claiming that US President Donald Trump was considering giving Kyiv Tomahawk cruise missiles dominated the Ukrainian and US media cycle. The speculation grew when it was said Trump asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky whether Ukraine could target Russian cities if such weapons were provided. The White House did not confirm or deny the conversation but tried to calm the growing buzz. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump was “merely asking a question, not encouraging further killing.”Also read: 'Game-changer on battlefield': What are Germany’s Taurus missiles? Here's why Ukraine keeps asking for them
What makes Tomahawk missiles different?
Tomahawk cruise missiles are long-range, subsonic weapons made for precise strikes on land targets. They can fly between 1,600 and 2,500 kilometres and are known for their low-altitude travel and evasive flight paths that help avoid interception. Each missile costs about $2 million and is produced by Raytheon. These weapons were first used in 1991 during Operation Desert Storm and remain a key part of the US military’s arsenal. The latest version can even be reprogrammed mid-flight and hover over targets before striking.
Why does Ukraine want Tomahawk missiles?
Ukraine has long been asking for Tomahawks. They were part of Zelensky’s “Victory Plan” presented to then-President Joe Biden in October 2024. Russia still has a big edge when it comes to missiles. It uses cruise systems like Kalibr and ballistic ones like Iskander to hit Ukrainian cities. Ukraine currently relies on Western systems like the Storm Shadow, which are effective but limited to about 250 kilometres in range. For deeper strikes, Ukraine uses drones like the Palianytsia, but these are not as precise or powerful.
What could Ukraine target with Tomahawks?
Tomahawks would give Ukraine the ability to hit major Russian cities like Moscow and St Petersburg with much greater force and accuracy. While Ukrainian drones have already reached Moscow, they mostly cause psychological disruption and airport closures rather than damage. Tomahawks could change that, allowing direct and powerful strikes on key sites. Another likely target would be Russian airbases such as Olenya in Murmansk Oblast, used to launch missile attacks on Ukrainian cities. These are usually out of reach for Ukraine’s current weapons. Tomahawks could help Ukraine hit them more often and more effectively.
What challenges can Ukraine face while using Tomahawks?
Ukraine faces serious difficulties in actually using Tomahawks. Vadym Skibitskyi, deputy head of Ukraine’s military intelligence agency, told The Guardian on 15 July that the missiles are “not easy to use.” He explained that Tomahawks are usually launched from warships or strategic bombers, platforms Ukraine doesn’t have. Ukraine also lacks the naval set-up for sea launches. Using ground-based versions would require the US to send not only the missiles but also complex launch systems, which may not be practical right now.
Are there other options for Ukraine?
There are alternatives. Germany is preparing to supply Ukraine with long-range missiles, though the specific system hasn’t been named. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on 17 July that the weapons would arrive “very shortly, very soon.” He added that Ukraine would be better positioned with these new systems “in the weeks and months to come.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday (July 19) that Kyiv has proposed a new round of peace talks with Russia next week, after negotiations came to a halt in early June. In his evening address, Zelensky said, “Security Council Secretary Umerov… reported that he had proposed the next meeting with the Russian side for next week. Zelensky ready for direct talks with Putin? Ukraine proposes fresh peace talks amid massive Russian strikes

Russia launched a massive overnight drone and missile attack on Ukraine between Friday and Saturday (July 19), killing one person and injuring six others in the Black Sea port city of Odesa. '300 strike drones, 30 missiles': Russia launches massive attack on Ukraine, despite Trump's ULTIMATUM and EU sanctions

The United States has decided to send its next Patriot air defence system to Germany instead of Switzerland, in a move aimed at speeding up the delivery of missile batteries to Ukraine. The Wall Street Journal reported the change on July 18, citing three US officials. This decision follows an announcement from the Swiss Defence Ministry, which said its delivery of US Patriot systems would be delayed after the State Department chose to prioritise support for Ukraine. Now, the Patriot system, coming off the production line, will be sent to Germany. In return, Berlin will send two of its own Patriots to Kyiv, the report said. Also read: ‘We’d have to go nuclear’: Only 8 days of missiles left? He also warned that Russia is and will remain a threat to the European alliance, even if a peaceful solution is reached over the war in Ukraine. Russia will undoubtedly, in my mind, remain an enduring threat.” Watch | Russia-Ukraine War: Russia Warns of Increased Tensions With NATO https://www.wionews.com/videos/russia-ukraine-war-russia-warns-of-increased-tensions-with-nato-global-stability-at-risk-wion-1752743667634/embed
