Nine people were killed and dozens injured in fresh Russian shelling on Ukraine's second city Kharkiv. Life had begun to return to normal in the city after Moscow’s troops were forced to retreat.

Russia-Ukraine Crisis: 9 killed, dozens injured in fresh shelling in Kharkiv

Chechen strongman and an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ramzan Kadyrov, has warned Poland to "better take back your weapons" from Ukraine as he is ready to attack the European country. A video of his comment surfaced on Twitter where he can be heard saying that the issue of Ukraine is “closed”, and if given the order, he's “interested in Poland”.

Kadyrov also demanded an apology from Poland for an incident involving Russia's ambassador earlier this month where the latter was splattered with red paint by anti-war protesters during a Victory Day ceremony.

"The issue of Ukraine is closed. I'm interested in Poland. What is it trying to achieve?" Kadyrov said, according to a translation.

Russian President Putin’s ally says ‘Ukraine closed…Poland next’ in a chilling new video

Backdrop

As the Russia-Ukraine war completes three months, both sides are witnessing spectacular twists and turns, showing that reality is hitting both sides. Few would have predicted a month ago that President Putin would be willing to swallow the bitter pill of Finland and Sweden's bid to join NATO, which effectively amounts to NATO's eastward expansion, adding over a thousand kilometres of direct land border between Russia and NATO, and respond only with a weak warning to react to increased weapon deployment in these two countries.

Likewise, the rhetoric of Ukraine winning the war overhyped by the US led NATO through exhaustive information and perception war, seems to be fading with the surrender of over 2000 Azov fighters in Mariupol, cutting off Ukraine from the Sea of Azov, besides losing a large chunk of land in Donbas Region. President Zelensky's&nbsp;acknowledgement of diplomacy being the only answer, highlighting concerns for people and soldiers is not too late, if those interested in prolonging this war let him act on it. &nbsp;

Parties to the Conflict

The war is sparing no one in the world from inflationary pressures, having doubled the figures of the global food insecure population, due to acute food shortage, triggering the blame game by both sides to seek concessions. While Russia can be accused of launching a pre-emptive ground offensive on Ukraine, NATO can also be accused of creating conditions threatening Russia by continued eastward expansion and proxy war. While the kinetic, contact, hybrid war is on between Russia and Ukraine, the US-led NATO is fighting a non-kinetic, non-contact, undeclared war in economic, information, diplomatic and political domains, against Russia; hence de-facto parties to the war.&nbsp;

Russian Stakes and Compulsions&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

After three months of the war, while Russia can draw solace from sizeable territorial gains and linking Donbas with Crimea after capture of Mariupol, but at a very heavy cost of men and material, besides unprecedented economic stress due to crippling sanctions by the West. It has made President Putin revisit his stance on Finland and Sweden, as it is cost-prohibitive for Russia to open another front with NATO on Finland's borders. It, therefore, makes better sense for him to achieve the desired end state in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine by liberating Donbas Region, landlocking Ukraine and dealing with Finland later. Russia realises its limitations in economic, diplomatic, information and political warfare domain; hence more territorial gains on the ground to landlock Ukraine by extending the land bridge between Crimea, Odesa to Transnistria and liberating Donbas is the best option for it, to gain better negotiating position, to have the sanctions lifted.&nbsp;

Ukrainian Stakes and Compulsions &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

President Zelensky appears to recognise that neither he nor the western propaganda-based information war, which has made him a hero and outright winner, can be sustained in the long run, having lost more territory the size of some European countries, left with devastated towns, over four million refugees, heavy casualties, and the surrender of his overhyped Azov Regiments. While additional aid and weaponry with a $40 billion cheque from the US and $16.4 billion from the EU can boost his combat power, but regaining lost ground from Russians is going to be extremely difficult, as they will use built up areas for defending their gains, as Ukraine did. Prolonging war doesn’t guarantee peace for Ukraine, but it may result in greater territorial loss, unending proxy war, and a long-term Russian threat.

NATO’s Stakes and Compulsions&nbsp;

NATO seems to be emboldened by the soft Russian response to the bid of Finland and Sweden to join NATO, with a confidence that Russia has been adequately weakened to challenge the eastward expansion of NATO; hence, it is keen to add these two countries with strong militaries, to secure its northern flank and have a better collective security posture in the long run. It also makes sense in the context of Sino-Russian footprints in the Arctic region and the North Atlantic Ocean. Towards that aim, it is ready to sacrifice some of its energy and economic interests for the time being.&nbsp;

It is too early to predict how long this show of unified strength will continue because the war is certainly not making Europe peaceful, with millions of refugees and non-state actors activated and a longer border with belligerent Russia, which will reorganise itself, learning from its miscalculations. While NATO may be able to handle the objections of Turkey and Croatia with few concessions/addressing security concerns, but the disagreement regarding long term energy security may not be easy to handle, once the rhetoric of united NATO starts fading with economic fatigue and energy deficit.&nbsp;

Is USA the Beneficiary?

In short term the USA can rejoice some immediate gains. It has been able to get control of NATO, weaken Russia, create market for its arms dealers, energy companies and infrastructure contractors. It has been able to block strategic Nord Stream 1 and 2, and encourage EU to find alternate energy sources, thereby reducing Russian influence drastically.&nbsp;

It has, however, incurred certain long-term losses, the most serious of which is driving Russia into a stronger China-Russia Axis than ever before, which is beyond its individual capabilities to handle. True, this battle has revitalised NATO, but it has also strengthened the Russia-China-Iran nexus, or anti-West alliance. Sanctions have fueled calls for an alternative financial system to avoid financial paralysis caused by a monopolized dollarized financial system, which could harm the US in the long run.

The US's global exhibition of backing proxy war by enabling Ukraine/Zelensky to fight to the bitter end in order to achieve its geopolitical aim of weakening Russia, with no American losses has tarnished the US's reputation as an ally/partner. Indeed, more than $56 billion in funding for a proxy war in Ukraine, which is more than double the amount spent in Afghanistan's 20-year war, reveals misplaced priorities, unless US is counting on making much more money from increased weapon sales by prolonging the war.

It has put Taiwan, Japan and South Korea on notice facing a similar threat&nbsp;from aggressive China, to which US has been extremely shy of sanctioning it, despite later breaching territorial integrity of many democracies in the South China Sea, violating Taiwanese air space at will, and incremental encroachment in Himalayas. The world, struggling with financial, food and energy crises, doesn’t want any extension of war, on any pretext.&nbsp;

The visit of President Biden to the Indo-Pacific is significant to restoring the declining confidence of allies and partners in the Indo-Pacific, without which, taking on China's challenge is difficult. Many in this region accuse Biden administration of reactivating Cold War 1.0 with Russia, diluting Cold War 2.0 with China, which is a bigger global challenge with better economic muscles. The proposed launch of Indo Pacific Economic Forum is to lure more regional countries to gain lost ground in economic engagement vis a vis China.

Way Ahead&nbsp;

In a situation where NATO continues to persuade Zelensky to fight, giving hopes to recapturing the entire territory of Ukraine, and the Russians continue incremental efforts to achieve an end state of landlocked Ukraine and independent Donbas, the war will continue. Neither the sanctions have deterred Russia, nor blocking gas flow by Russia will deter NATO. As long as Ukraine is ready to be used as a tool in big power contestation and NATO continues to add fuel to the fire, the chances of talks or any mediation seem to be a remote possibility. In the Russia Ukraine war, there will be no winners, but a new set of security and economic challenges will impact the entire world.

Having tested US responses in Ukraine, the growing Chinese aggressiveness in Indo-Pacific is a wake-up call to US to avoid losing influence in the region, especially after losing considerable strategic space in the Middle East and Af-Pak regions. Chinese footprints in the Solomon Islands surprised US and Australia. Regular violation of ADIZ of Taiwan, belligerent North Korea threatening South Korea and Japan, reassertion of Chinese and Russian claims against Japan indicate that US resolve is under greater threat in the Indo-Pacific, where it has obligation to defend Japan and South Korea and the strategic necessity to save Taiwan. It is also not easy to find another Zelensky/Ukraine in Asia, willing to act as proxy of NATO. It is, for this reason, President Joe Biden needs partners in Indo-Pacific, to strengthen/expand Quad, and put up viable alternative economic, infrastructure, technological and supply chains in Indo-Pacific with allies and partners. The UK Foreign Minister’s call for Global NATO seems far fetched at this point in time but indicates desperation for global support to face the reality of the threat from growing Chinese Russian alliance. &nbsp;

Opinion | Is war-fatigue causing twists and turns in the Russia-Ukraine War?

Ukraine`s Lesia Tsurenko on Monday called for stronger support for her country from the tennis world following Russia`s invasion and said she was desperate not to play Russians or Belarusians&nbsp;on the tour.

The 32-year-old Tsurenko, a qualifier in Paris who lost in the first round to overwhelming favourite Iga Swiatek, thanked her opponent for wearing a Ukraine pin but said more players needed to speak out.

"I hate what Russian propaganda is saying about Ukraine in general. I really hate it. I feel a lot of anger because there is a lot of lies about my country and it hurts me a lot," Tsurenko told a news conference.

"I don`t know if I can ask players to care more, but I would like to see that from the players, from the WTA, from the ATP, I would like top players just to support more and to show more understanding of what is really going on."

The ATP and WTA Tours last week stripped Wimbledon of its ranking points after the Grand Slam event banned Russian and Belarussian players from this year`s tournament.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24 calling it a "special military operation" to demilitarise and "de-nazify" its neighbour. Ukraine and the West call that a false pretext to launch a war of aggression. Belarus has been a key staging area for the invasion.

"I don`t feel good to play against Russian and Belarusian players just because it reminds me what is going on in my country," Tsurenko said.

"It`s painful, I`ll be honest. It`s very painful and I`m always hoping not to get them in my draw."

She has played against Russians several times this year, including once since the invasion.

"I don`t feel good and it was also another question that I had inside of me if I should play or I should just give up, you know, should I just decide not to play against them," she said.

Russian and Belarusian tennis players are competing on the tour as neutral athletes. Tsurenko backed Wimbledon`s decision to ban players from Russia and Belarus, saying it was only a small price to pay for what was happening in Ukraine.

French Open 2022: It's painful playing against Russians, says Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko

A British man who was in a 10-year relationship with his partner and also fathered two kids, ran off with a Ukrainian woman who had moved into their house a few days ago to escape war.

According to The Sun, 29-year-old security guard Tony Garnett fell for her the minute after he met 22-year-old Sofiia Karkadym.

“As soon as I saw him, I fancied him,” Sofiia, who fled the city of Lviv in western Ukraine, told The Sun.

“It’s been very quick, but this is our love story. I know people will think badly of me but it happens. I could see how unhappy Tony was.”

Garnett, 29 and his partner Lorna, 28, welcomed Sofiia at the start of May, but just 10 days later their seemingly-happy marriage was torn apart when he ran away with the refugee.

The family had taken in Sofiia in their effort to help Ukrainians fleeing the Russian invasion. Tony first got into touch with Sonia touch on a Facebook page where he offered to house a refugee.
<img alt="Ukrainian refugee" data-caption="Tony Garnett left his girlfriend for Ukrainian refugee Sofiia Karkadym 10 days after she arrived to live in their home." data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="546678a0-77f2-49ad-86d9-832a4adbb1b5" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/Sonia_0.jpg" />
Sofiia, who works as an IT manager, landed in Manchester on May 4 after waiting for weeks in Berlin for her UK visa to be approved.

Tony Sofiia quickly developed a connection, and while his six-year-old and three-year-old daughters also took a liking to her,&nbsp;

“We were getting on brilliantly but at that time it was no more than that — although I can see why Lorna started to feel jealous and resentful of her,” Tony was quoted as saying.

As the days went by, Tony and Sofia began to get closer, while partner grew “very jealous” of him.

But things took an unexpected turn quickly, as Sofiia and Lorna had tiff, following which the Ukrainian refugee decided to leave.

Tony said that “something inside me clicked” and he told Lorna “If she's going, I'm going”.

The pair then packed their bags and moved in with Tony's mum and dad. Now, they are looking at properties to move into.&nbsp;

The family had taken in Sofiia in their effort to help Ukrainians fleeing the Russian invasion. Tony first got into touch with Sonia touch on a Facebook page where he offered to house a refugee. Sofiia, who works as an IT manager, landed in Manchester on May 4 after waiting for weeks in Berlin for her UK visa to be approved. Tony Sofiia quickly developed a connection, and while his six-year-old and three-year-old daughters also took a liking to her, “We were getting on brilliantly but at that time it was no more than that — although I can see why Lorna started to feel jealous and resentful of her,” Tony was quoted as saying. The pair then packed their bags and moved in with Tony's mum and dad. Now, they are looking at properties to move into. (With inputs from agencies) Watch WION's live TV here

UK man dumps wife, runs off with Ukrainian refugee who moved in few days ago

The annual summit of the World Economic Forum (WEF) kicked off in Davos, Switzerland, on Sunday after a gap of nearly about two-and-a-half years. A host of global leaders are expected to deliberate over the main challenges, including the global supply chain crisis, facing the world economy.

The last time the WEF was held at the alpine retreat was in January 2020.

However, unlike the earlier years when the WEF Summit would take place in January when Davos is covered in snow, this year’s edition will be held amid spring-like temperatures of around 20 degrees Celsius.

The theme for the 2022 World Economic Forum is ‘History at a Turning Point: Government Policies and Business Strategies.’

The leaders are expected to talk about humanitarian and security challenges in the backdrop of the geopolitical tensions and the once-in-a-century pandemic. Climate change will also feature in the talks.

According to the organisers, nearly 2,500 people, including political leaders, business heads, champions of the civil society and the media, will be in Davos next week to debate and find solutions for the most urgent global issues like the ongoing pandemic and the war in Ukraine.

Over 50 heads of governments and organisations will also be present at Davos.&nbsp;Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the meeting this year as the organisers have excluded the Russian contingent in view of the sanctions imposed by the West on Moscow over the Ukraine conflict.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will, however, address the summit online while a few officials from the country will attend the meeting in person.

The latest edition of the WEF summit comes ahead of a protest that erupted a day before where dozens of anti-capitalist protesters clashed with police in Zurich on Friday.

The unauthorised "Smash WEF" demonstration is a regular occurrence in Switzerland's financial hub before the world's business and political elite gather around 120 km (70 miles) away.

World Economic Forum 2022 kicks off, over 2500 leaders to discuss war, Covid effects on economy

As the West continues to send arms and pledges to donate billions of dollars as war aid to Ukraine, Russia has claimed that it has deployed its two ‘state-of-the-art’ laser weapon systems—'Peresvet’ and ‘Zadira‘—to burn drones.

The announcement was made by the deputy prime minister and in charge of military development, Yury Borisov, on Thursday who said that even more powerful laser-based weapons capable of destroying their targets are being tested and deployed in the war, according to Reuters.

Detailing the prowess of the lasers, the deputy PM cited a recent test where the Zadira burned a drone more than five kilometres (three miles) away in seconds.

“If Peresvet blinds, then the new generation of laser weapons lead to the physical destruction of the target — thermal destruction, they burn up,”&nbsp;Reuters quoted him as saying on Russian state television.

He called “Zadira” the most powerful laser system than Peresvet.

However, Ukraine President Vlodomyr Zelensky trashed the claims by drawing parallels to Nazi Germany’s “so-called wonder weapons” that were “unveiled in a bid to prevent defeat in World War Two.”

“The clearer it became that they had no chance in the war, the more propaganda there was about an amazing weapon that would be so powerful as to ensure a turning point,”&nbsp;Reuters&nbsp;quoted him as saying in a late night video address.

What do we know about the two laser weapons?

1) Russian leader Vladimir Putin had unveiled an array of new and deadly weapons in 2018, including an intercontinental ballistic missile, underwater nuclear drones, a supersonic weapon and a laser system.

2) Little is known about the specifics of the new laser. Putin back then mentioned Peresvet, named after a medieval Orthodox warrior monk Alexander Peresvet who perished in mortal combat.

3) Borisov said that Peresvet was already being widely deployed and it could blind satellites up to 1,500 km above Earth.

While speaking at an event, Former US President George W Bush condemned the full-scale invasion by Russia as "brutal" and "unjustified". However, he mistakenly said "invasion of Iraq". In no time, he corrected himself: "I mean, Ukraine".

A Russian gymnast who sported an insignia linked to his country's invasion of Ukraine on a medal podium has been banned for one year, a disciplinary panel said.

Ivan Kuliak's singlet had the letter 'Z' prominently placed as he stood next to Ukraine's Kovtun Illia, the gold medallist at a World Cup event in Doha in March.

The 'Z' has been seen daubed on Russian tanks and vehicles in Ukraine and has come to symbolise support for the invasion.

A disciplinary commission of the Gymnastics Ethics Foundation (GEF) found that Kuliak violated rules of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), the sport's ruling body.

"Mr Kuliak is not allowed to participate in any FIG-sanctioned event or competition organised by an affiliated FIG member federation for one year as of the date of this decision," GEF said.

Kuliak must also return his bronze medal and prize money of 500 Swiss francs ($500). He has 21 days to appeal against the punishment.

It had already been decided that all Russian and Belarusian gymnasts will be banned from future competitions.

"If the protective measures keeping Russian athletes from competing are still in place on 17 May 2023, the ban shall continue and expire six months after the removal of said measures," GEF said.

The 5th edition of WION's flagship summit has started. This year, the dialogue is centered on sustainable peace around the world. As the Russia-Ukraine war has taken center-stage, Palki Sharma, managing editor of WION seeks our guests' insights on whether Vladimir Putin started this war but do you think Joe Biden is reluctant to end it? Listen in.

WION Global Summit 2022: Is there any foreseeable end to Russia-Ukraine war?

Jamaica's Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce Aubyn Hill has said that his country can look to get wheat and fertilizer from India. His comments come in the wake of global supply snarls that was sparked following the Russian-Ukraine war, putting global food security at risk.

Speaking to WION’s Principal Diplomatic Correspondent Sidhant Sibal, Hill said, "Fertilizer is something we will be looking at. But in fact, as this relationship develops, we might be also looking for wheat from India, and those are the kind of discussions we are going to have, as the war between Ukraine and Russia plays out.”&nbsp;

He was speaking ahead of Indian President Ram Nath Kovind's one-week visit to his country.

The Indian president will visit Jamaica and St. Vincent and Grenadines from May 15 to 21.

This is the first visit by the Head of State of India to these two countries and is reflective of India's commitment to the CARICOM or the Caribbean community.

Inviting the Indian investors, the minister said, "Would like to see trading ties between India and us increase, as we build infrastructure. I would like to see a lot more Indian contractors working with us in Jamaica".

Here are some excerpts

&nbsp;

WION: How do you see the visit of the Indian president to Jamaica?

Aubyn Hill: It is extremely important to all of us in the government, and I can say to most Jamaicans, it is historical. President Kovind will be welcomed, I can’t recall an Indian president coming here. It was indeed my pleasure a couple of years back when I handed my credentials to President Kovind in Delhi, when I served as Jamaica's High Commissioner to India, a non-resident high commissioner.

We are all very pleased and happy to have him in Jamaica—a country that has very strong ties with India. We have an important Indian minority in Jamaica. Apart from that, we have also cultural, sports and historical ties through the commonwealth. We are very pleased to welcome him.

&nbsp;

WION: The visit will see him giving cricket kits, naming of one of the streets in the name of Dr Ambedkar&nbsp;

Aubyn Hill: Your constitutional star Dr Ambedkar will be honoured in Jamaica while President Kovind is here. We are naming a street which happens to be just south of our Supreme Court building, which is absolutely right given the role that Dr Ambedkar has played in writing of your constitution. Such a fine Constitution. We are very pleased that a street will be named after him. The president will be speaking at the lower house of Parliament, where the upper house of the senate will also be invited. So effectively, he will be speaking to the joint session of the Parliament, which is unusual. It is an honour we give to a very few, and we are very pleased that President Kovind will receive this honour. I will be certainly there, listening to him when he addresses our Parliament next week.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

WION: How do you see the ties between India and Caricom?

Aubyn Hill: In recent years, PM Modi has been very careful and courteous in meeting not only my prime minister but also the prime ministers of CARICOM. India's influence across the CARICOM is very strong and important. We have a population which is of Indian descent. Same in Guyana, across the Caribbean. That has been the case. Of course, we have cultural ties that communities bring. Cricket has tied us together and we know India is technically and realistically the largest economy in the commonwealth. Commonwealth is important because of the BREXIT. India is the largest democracy, and we all admire it. So, the Indian influence across the Caribbean in Jamaica is very important and we look forward to these relationships growing stronger as we seek to reignite the effect of the commonwealth.

&nbsp;

WION: How do you see the visit strengthening the relationship, especially with regard to the people-to-people ties?

Aubyn Hill: The time is coming when soon the exchanges between India and Jamaica and other CARICOM countries will strengthen. And as India takes on a more important role, not only in the commonwealth but across the world, we will expect to see stronger trading ties. Trade is very important, and we have to make sure that the ties increase. Our people can offer services on the internet without not even leaving the country. We are looking for ways and means to increase the trade and people-to-people arrangements will strengthen between India and Jamaica and CARICOM.

&nbsp;

WION: You are the commerce minister, are you looking at FTA between India and Jamaica or India or the Caribbean region.&nbsp;

Aubyn Hill:&nbsp;You know, I am looking at that kind of arrangement between India and Jamaica. We are the most important political-economic country in the CARICOM region. All of us know that. We would like to see trading ties between India and us increase, as we build infrastructure. I would like to see a lot more Indian contractors working in Jamaica. Of course, EXIM bank is a source of finance. When contractors from India come here, EXIM bank would usually follow them. Jamaica's special economic zone is a place where Indian investors can put up their logistics hub not just to serve the Caribbean and Latin America, but also the largest economy—the US. It is easy to trade from Jamaica.

We have English law, which gives great comfort to investors. We speak English and India is the largest English-speaking country in the world, given the population. So, we have that in common. Apart from that, there is proximity to the US; a free currency market, as we have no currency restrictions.&nbsp; We have the largest English-speaking population, so there are good reasons why Jamaica should be looked at by Indian investors as a logistics hub, for the Caribbean and Latin America and indeed North America as well.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

WION: Are you looking for wheat support from India amid the Russia-Ukraine crisis?

Aubyn Hill:&nbsp;Well, I have noticed that Egypt immediately turned to India to buy a billion worth of wheat because of the Ukraine -Russia war. We are not in that stage yet, but fertilizer is something we will be looking at. In fact, as this relationship develops, we might be also looking for wheat from India and those are the kind of discussions we going to have as the war between Ukraine and Russia plays out and we see how trading and supply arrangement fall out. We want to make sure our relationship with India not only gets strong but also becomes even more efficient and effective in serving both countries, especially ours.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

WION: Jamaican foreign minister has put her&nbsp;candidature for the secretary-general of the commonwealth. What do you expect from India?

Aubyn Hill: I could not recommend a more capable candidate. All of us in Jamaica are behind her, PM is going to Kigali where the next CHOGAM is going to take place. And Foreign Minister Kamina J Smith is extremely well suited. She has chaired many international conferences—CARICOM and others—worked at the UN also. She is a well-trained lawyer, a top-class diplomat and one who is extremely agreeable and yet very clear in her ability to lead. We recommend her, she knows your foreign minister (Jaishankar) very well. We are expecting that we will get support from a very big country in Asia, and I certainly have worked with her for a long time and have the highest respect for her intellect, capacity and her intelligence at forging solutions and positing Jamaica in the last seven years. I highly recommend her to India.&nbsp;

WION: You are the commerce minister, are you looking at FTA between India and Jamaica or India or the Caribbean region. Aubyn Hill: You know, I am looking at that kind of arrangement between India and Jamaica. We have English law, which gives great comfort to investors. We speak English and India is the largest English-speaking country in the world, given the population. So, we have that in common. Apart from that, there is proximity to the US; a free currency market, as we have no currency restrictions. We have the largest English-speaking population, so there are good reasons why Jamaica should be looked at by Indian investors as a logistics hub, for the Caribbean and Latin America and indeed North America as well. WION: Are you looking for wheat support from India amid the Russia-Ukraine crisis? Aubyn Hill: Well, I have noticed that Egypt immediately turned to India to buy a billion worth of wheat because of the Ukraine -Russia war. We are not in that stage yet, but fertilizer is something we will be looking at. In fact, as this relationship develops, we might be also looking for wheat from India and those are the kind of discussions we going to have as the war between Ukraine and Russia plays out and we see how trading and supply arrangement fall out. We want to make sure our relationship with India not only gets strong but also becomes even more efficient and effective in serving both countries, especially ours. WION: Jamaican foreign minister has put her candidature for the secretary-general of the commonwealth. What do you expect from India? Aubyn Hill: I could not recommend a more capable candidate. All of us in Jamaica are behind her, PM is going to Kigali where the next CHOGAM is going to take place. And Foreign Minister Kamina J Smith is extremely well suited. She has chaired many international conferences—CARICOM and others—worked at the UN also. She is a well-trained lawyer, a top-class diplomat and one who is extremely agreeable and yet very clear in her ability to lead. We recommend her, she knows your foreign minister (Jaishankar) very well. We are expecting that we will get support from a very big country in Asia, and I certainly have worked with her for a long time and have the highest respect for her intellect, capacity and her intelligence at forging solutions and positing Jamaica in the last seven years. I highly recommend her to India.

Looking to secure wheat and fertilizer from India, says Jamaica's industry minister Aubyn Hill

A Russian soldier has become the first person from the Russian military to be tried for war crimes in Kyiv after being accused of murdering an unarmed man on a bicycle.

A Ukrainian court began the preliminary hearing on Friday against Vadim Shysimarin, 21, a commander of the Kantemirovskaya tank division.

Shysimarin’s lawyer Victor Ovsyanikov informed the court that his client has acknowledged of killing the 62-year-old man in the head through an open car window in the northeastern village of Chupakhivka in the first week of the war.

According to prosecutors, Shysimarin, who is from the city of Ust Illyinsk, in the south-eastern Russian region of Irkutsk, shot dead the man after being ordered “to kill a civilian so he would not report them to Ukrainian defenders.”

The Security Service of Ukraine, known as the SBU, posted a short video on May 4 of Shyshimarin speaking in front of camera and briefly describing how he shot the man. The SBU described the video as “one of the first confessions of the enemy invaders”, according to the Daily Mail.

The court will reconvene on May 18, the judge said.

In a first, Russian soldier accused of killing civilian being tried for Ukraine war crimes

Fedir Shandor has become a sort of an internet celebrity ever since his photo of giving lessons online while being deployed on the battlefield went viral.

Like many civilians, Shandor joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine at the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion that began on February 24.

Before that, he used to run a tourism company and teach at a university in western Uzhhorod city of Ukraine.

But all that changed when Russia’s Vladimir Putin started attacking its neighbouring country in a bid to overthrow the Volodymyr Zelensky regime.

However, as a professor, he hasn’t stopped giving lectures even in the trenches. He made an arrangement with his commanding officers and comrades to have a suitable duty roster to be able to hold lectures with his students.

The photo that had become was taken by fellow soldier Viktor Shchaedi. It purportedly shows the professor in army fatigues instructing students via video chat from inside a trench protected by sandbags, according to the New York Post.

The man can be seen with his helmet on and an AK-103 rifle at his side&nbsp;as he holds his phone in a bandaged hand.

“We are fighting for an educated nation.&nbsp;If I did not give lectures, it would be a sin,” Shandor said in a statement issued by Uzhhorod National University, where he teaches classes in tourism and hospitality.

“If there are sounds of shelling somewhere in the background, they do not affect the lecture,” Shandor said in the university statement.

It has been 70 days since he enlisted into the army and hasn’t missed a single class since then.

During that time, he said, he’s held classes at 8 am every Monday and Tuesday.

“I did not miss a single one,” he said.

“I always prefer morning classes: I read, and then you have time for another job,” he added.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky is winning hearts again.&nbsp;

Zelensky has maintained his place in headlines for the last two months after his country faced unprecedented attacks from Russia on the orders of the country's President Vladimir Putin.

The comedian-turned-politician built a war hero character for himself, winning hearts with his bravery, and now he's gaining hearts for the kindness he showed&nbsp;a young boy.

War-torn Ukraine's President wins hearts, responds to a UK schoolboy's letter amid tensions at home

In an effort to win over hesitant governments like Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic, the European Commission is proposing amendments to its planned embargo on Russian oil.

Should EU nations fail to achieve an agreement on an oil embargo against Russia by the weekend, a meeting of EU foreign ministers will be scheduled next week, according to EU foreign policy leader Josep Borrell.

The oil embargo was suggested by the European Union's executive on Wednesday as part of a larger package of EU penalties on Russia, the sixth since Moscow started its&nbsp;invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

Borrell told reporters on the sidelines of an event in Florence that he had faith in reaching "a solution that is shared, as not all countries are in the same situation," and that a deal must be found quickly.

When asked about a prospective gas embargo, Borrell stated, "Gas is not for tomorrow, but for the day after tomorrow," implying that the EU should take its sanctions against Russia one step at a time.

Earlier on Friday, he said the bloc needs to be "realistic" in its ambitions to wean itself from Russian energy, adding that it must do so in an orderly and cautious manner.

As the situation in Ukraine worsens, Europe, which imports roughly 40 per cent of its gas from Russia, has been trying to diversify its energy supply mix.

"Gas cannot be substituted with something else... if it's not Russian gas it needs to be gas anyway," he said.

The senior diplomat went on to say that there were a variety of methods to punish Russia's oil exports, and that action might not be confined to a simple ban on buying the oil.

"If insurance companies don't provide the insurance for the transportation of Russian oil, it's going to be a big problem for Russian oil exports - not only to the EU but to rest of world," he stated, without providing any other information.

EU top diplomat hints at more sanctions, even as agency proposes amendments to oil embargo against Russia

Russia on Friday announced that it won’t be using nuclear weapons during its ongoing war against Ukraine.

Speaking to reporters in Moscow, foreign ministry spokesman Alexei Zaitsev said the use of nuclear warheads was not applicable to what Kremlin calls&nbsp;special military operation in Ukraine, reports Reuters.

On April 14, CIA director William Burns claimed that there was a possibility Russia could resort to nuclear weapons given the recent setbacks it suffered in Ukraine.

"None of us can take lightly the threat posed by a potential resort to tactical nuclear weapons or low-yield nuclear weapons," he said.

Notably, Russia’s foreign minister last week had warned that the risk of war could escalate into nuclear tensions if US and other allied nations intervene.

In an interview with Russian TV, Sergey Lavrov said NATO nations were "pouring oil on the fire" and risking "World War III" by providing weapons to Ukraine.

He said the ongoing arms shipments to Ukraine meant NATO was "in essence engaged in war with Russia" already.

The minister’s warning&nbsp;was&nbsp;in response to US and EU nations pledging military support during a special meet at the US Ramstein Air Base in western Germany on April 26.

Germany's defence chief last week Tuesday announced that the country would start sending self-propelled armoured anti-aircraft guns to Ukraine.

Russia assures it won’t use nuclear weapons in ongoing war against Ukraine

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Paris on Wednesday to meet French President Emmanuel Macron to boost bilateral trade and discuss issues of mutual interest.

The discussions would also revolve around the Russia-Ukraine war, where India has been maintaining a neutral stance despite pressures from the West to condemn Moscow for its actions.

According to AFP, which has cited Elysee Palace officials, Macron will be hosting a ‘working dinner” for Modi later in the day to discuss ways in which India can reduce its dependence on Russia.

Macron will “emphasise the consequences of the war for the international order well beyond the European Union, including in Asia,” his Elysee Palace office said.

France wants to “help the Indians diversify their supply” away from Russian arms and energy, officials added.

The aim “is not to leave the Indians with no way out, but to offer solutions,” they said.

To rebuild Ukraine, win war against Russia, Zelensky launches a crowdfunding platform

At times of war, stories of bravery and heroism often inspire people and help them get through tough phases.

As Ukraine attempts to repulse Russian tanks and jets from taking over their cities, a Ukrainian pilot seems to have gained a cult status among people.

Speculations are rife about this "Ghost of Kyiv" on Ukrainian social media after claims that the pilot flying the MiG-29 allegedly shot down six Russian jets.

Clips of the so-called "Ghost of Kiev" have spread like wildfire on social media. Many on Twitter are calling the Ukrainian pilot the "first European ace since World War II."

One particular post has claimed that the pilot shot down a variety of Russian planes. Unconfirmed reports claim he has taken down two SU-35s, one SU-27, one MiG-29, and two SU-25s.

Who is the ‘Ghost of Kyiv’? The ace pilot giving hope to Ukrainians

More than two months have passed since the Russia-Ukraine conflict began, 66 days to be exact, and it is not showing any signs of slowing down.

Even after multiple rounds of peace talks, a consensus is yet to be reached, and the war continues both on the streets and online.

Now, the British Foreign Office on Sunday (May 1st) has accused Moscow of using a 'troll factory' to spread disinformation about the war in Ukraine.

As per them, Russia is using disinformation to target politicians across a number of countries, including Britain and South Africa.

This is based on UK-funded research which is yet to be published. As per the country, the research exposes how the Kremlin's disinformation campaign attempts to manipulate international public opinion of the Russian invasion of its neighbour while also recruiting sympathisers.

"The UK government has alerted international partners and will continue to work closely with allies and media platforms to undermine Russian information operations", said British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss in a statement, adding "we cannot allow the Kremlin and it's shady troll farms to invade our online space with their lies about Putin's illegal war."

Britain alleges that it has traced the Russian disinformation campaign to eight platforms including Telegram, Twitter, Facebook and Tik Tok. It has also accused the country of trying to recruit and coordinate with new supporters who then target Kremlin critics' profiles.

On the other hand, Russia calls the western media's coverage of the conflict biased. As per the Kremlin, the Western media narrative ignores the ex-soviet country's concerns about NATO expansion and the alleged persecution of Russian speaking people in Ukraine.

This war is not the first time Russia has been accused of participating in a disinformation campaign. Earlier in 2016, the US accused Moscow of meddling in the presidential election.

Britain says Russia using 'troll farms' to spread disinformation about the Ukraine conflict

With the Russia-Ukraine conflict crossing the two-month mark, the tensions between Moscow and the West continue to escalate.

According to a Bloomberg report, Rogozin said that in accordance to the obligations the agency will inform its partners about the exit date with a year's notice.

&nbsp;In late March, NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hei shared a ride back to Earth alongside two Russian Cosmonauts and when asked had said that the relations among the ISS crew remained unaffected by the tensions in Ukraine.

In a move aimed at reducing dependence on Russian gas, reports claim Berlin will keep its swimming pools at least two degrees cooler this summer.

Berlin's pool operators reportedly said the move is a "political statement" and not a cost-cutting move. Ukrainians have been allowed free access to pools in the German capital, reports claim.

Russian gas row: Now, Berlin to reduce temperature in pools

US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin on Tuesday hinted at the possibility of Ukraine applying for a NATO membership, saying that such a “possibility exists.”

“NATO will always stand by its principles of maintaining an open door. I won’t speculate on what to come…I do believe that in the future, if a possibility exists, Ukraine will seek to once again apply for the member of NATO,” Austin said while briefing the reporters at Ramstein US airbase in western Germany, where the US is hosting dozens of countries for a conference on bolstering Ukraine's defence capabilities.

Notably, the meeting saw a major announcement from Germany, which pledged to deliver tanks to Ukraine in a radical switch in policy on the supply of military equipment&nbsp;to the country.

Similarly, the United States has also pledged to move “heaven and Earth” to help Ukraine win its battle against the Russian invasion.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that the United States had approved a US&nbsp;$165 million sale of ammunition for Ukraine's war effort, along with more than US $300 million in foreign military financing.

“The strategy that we've put in place — massive support for Ukraine, massive pressure against Russia, solidarity with more than 30 countries engaged in these efforts — is having real results,” Blinken told reporters in Poland the day after meeting Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky and other Ukrainian officials in Kyiv.

The announcements came hours after Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused NATO of using to engage in a “proxy war” with Moscow.

Condemning the delivery of weapons to Ukraine, Sergei Lavrov in an interview aired on Monday said, “"These weapons will be a legitimate target for Russia's military acting within the context of the special operation."

The United States and its allies have decided to meet once a month to discuss Ukraine's defence needs to battle invading Russian troops, US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin said Tuesday.

Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin says Ukraine could apply to join NATO in the future

War is made up of more than two sides battling for victory; it also includes hundreds of thousands of refugees fighting for their lives.

Ukraine is Europe's fastest-growing refugee crisis since World War II.&nbsp;

The United Nations predicted Tuesday that more than eight million Ukrainians may flee as refugees this year. The organisation has also doubled its relief request for those trapped in the war-torn country.

More than 5.2 million Ukrainians have already fled the nation in the two months since Russia launched its full-fledged invasion on February 24.

The UN refugee agency had predicted that up to four million people would migrate this year and had initially estimated that $1.85 billion would be required to support refugees in neighbouring countries.

On March 1, the United Nations again issued an urgent appeal for $1.1 billion to support six million people within the country over the next three months.

Now, on Tuesday, the UN's humanitarian office, OCHA, said it estimates that more than $2.25 billion is needed to meet the country's growing requirements and that the appealed amount would last through August.

This is significant because it implies the UN's humanitarian agency has more than doubled its estimate for the amount of money required to help people within Ukraine.

In Ukraine, the number of individuals who require humanitarian assistance has also risen to 15.7 million, up from 12 million previously.

UNHCR spokeswoman Shabia Mantoo told reporters in Geneva that the new predicted number was reached "in collaboration with the authorities and neighbouring countries."&nbsp;

"But it is important to remember that this situation is highly dynamic," she added.

Ukraine’s Mariupol Mayor has accused the Russian forces of hiding evidence of its “barbaric” war crimes in the strategic port city after new satellite images showed a mass burial site in the Russian-occupied village of Manhush, located about 12 miles (19km) west of Mariupol.

The mayor, Vadym Boichenko, was basing his allegation on the satellite images released by the Maxar on late Thursday, showing about 200 graves near an existing cemetery that had been expanded in recent weeks.

The US company’s images indicated that the new graves appeared between March 23 and March 26, The Washington Post reported.

“The biggest war crime of the 21st century was committed in Mariupol. This is the new Babyn Yar. Then, Hitler killed Jews, Roma, and Slavs. Now, Putin is destroying Ukrainians,” Boichenko said in the city council’s statement.

“We need to do everything we can to stop the genocide,” the newspaper quoted Boichenko as saying.

The Mariupol City Council in a statement on Telegram said that around 9,000 civilians are expected to be buried in the mass grave, claiming that the Russians forces “dug new trenches and filled them with corpses every day throughout April.”

The council further claimed that it has information indicating the bodies were “buried in several layers.”

The mayor claimed that more than 20,000 Mariupol residents had been killed since Russian forces began attacking the city during the early days of Vladimir Putin’s invasion.

Most bodies had now been removed, he said, with some disposed of in mobile crematoriums.

On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that the besieged Mariupol city has been “successfully liberated”.

Russia-Ukraine war: 200 new graves found in Mariupol, claims mayor as satellite pictures emerge

While WION takes utmost care to accurately report this developing news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos. Two British fighters were allegedly captured by Russian soldiers in Ukraine last week when they were defending the southern city of Mariupol in the war-torn nation. In the latest video, the Britons urged British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to negotiate their release. A few days ago, a video had emerged that showed 28-year-old fighter Aiden Aslin handcuffed and bruised. He had an evident cut on his forehead. Aslin was also paraded on Russian TV. As per UK media, Aslin is originally from Nottinghamshire but he moved to Ukraine in 2018. He reportedly holds dual citizenship. ALSO READ | Russian troops have begun battle for Donbas, says Ukraine President Zelensky Another Briton who is in captivity is Shaun Pinner. He apparently moved to Ukraine in 2018. In a statement released through Britain's foreign ministry, Pinner's relatives said the pair were "being held by the Russian army". Pinner's family noted he was a "proud member" of Ukraine's marines, after moving to the country four years ago and marrying a Ukrainian. In the latest British media report, the sister of Pinner suggested that his family has been considering a prisoner swap. As quoted by Daily Mail, the 43-year-old Cassandra Pinner said, "We have been made aware that Shaun is in another video asking for a prisoner exchange. A prisoner exchange is a move that is being considered, not necessarily with Viktor Medvedchuk, but it's something being discussed." ALSO READ | Ukraine war: More than 4.9 million Ukrainians flee war, says UN Both Pinner and Aslin had been fighting for the Ukrainian army in the southeastern Ukrainian city of Mariupol, which is now almost entirely under Russian control. Reports suggest that Mariupol could fall anytime after Russia escalated bombings and shelling with people reportedly hiding in the city. Britons urge Johnson to negotiate their release In the latest video published on Monday (April 18), which was shown on Russian state broadcaster VGTRK, Pinner and Aslin can be seen asking to be exchanged for Viktor Medvedchuk. Medvedchuk is said to be a very close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin. He was recently captured and is being held by the Ukrainian authorities. The Britons called on the British PM to help free them and the footage of the same went viral on social media forums. However, it was not clear whether the men had been forced to speak in the videos and when and where the video was actually made. So far, there is no response from the UK officials yet. Russia has been accused of genocide in Ukraine, the ultimate war crime. However, genocide has a specific legal definition and to date has only been proven in court a few times.

Let's find out more.

What exactly is genocide?

According to the 1948 Genocide Convention, it is defined as crimes done with the goal to eliminate, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial, or religious group.

Killing members of a group, causing substantial bodily or mental injury to them, establishing conditions meant to destroy them, preventing births, or forcibly transferring children to other groups are all examples of genocide.

What criteria are used to determine genocide?

Prosecutors must first show that the victims were members of a distinct national, ethnic, racial, or religious group in order to prove genocide. This rule does not apply to organisations targeted based on their political ideas.

"Genocide is a difficult crime to prove. Parties have to bring a lot to the table," explained Melanie O'Brien, head of the International Association of Genocide Scholars, citing the combined need of demonstrating intent, targeting a protected group, and crimes such as murder or forcible removal of minors.

Who made the allegation against Russia?

Multiple people. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, US President Joe Biden and even UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson have accused Russian forces of genocide, citing evidence of rape, torture, and executions in districts near Kyiv regained by Ukrainian troops earlier this month.

"Yes, I called it genocide because it has become clearer and clearer that (Russian President Vladimir) Putin is just trying to wipe out the idea of being able to be Ukrainian and the evidence is mounting," said Biden.

The scope of the horrors "doesn't look far short of genocide," British Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned last week.

What is Russia's response to these accusations?

Moscow claims the West fabricated evidence to defame its troops, calling the war on its smaller neighbour "a special operation" to stop genocide against Russian speakers in Ukraine.

Will the&nbsp;allegations against Russia&nbsp;be investigated?

In February, the International Criminal Court launched a probe into possible war crimes and crimes against humanity in Ukraine. It has authority over genocide as well.

Are there any old cases of genocide?

Yes, the international courts have had three cases meet their threshold:

-The Cambodian Khmer Rouge slaughter of&nbsp;minority Cham and Vietnamese people in the 1970s. An estimated&nbsp;1.7 million people were murdered in this genocide.

-&nbsp;Rwanda's mass massacre of Tutsis in 1994, which resulted in the deaths of 800,000 people.

-The 1995 Srebrenica massacre in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which claimed the lives of 8,000 Muslim men and boys.

Since the 1990s, the US administration has declared genocide in seven situations: Bosnia, Rwanda, Iraq, Sudan's Darfur area, Islamic State's massacres, particularly against the Yezidi, Myanmar's crackdown on Rohingya Muslims, and China's treatment of Uyghur Muslims. Only time will tell if the Russian violence against Ukraine will be categorized as a 'genocide'.&nbsp;
