Faced with an energy crisis at the hands of Russia, Germany has taken a U-turn from its plans of a nuclear exit and announced on Monday that it would keep two of its nuclear plants on standby beyond the end of this year.

This comes a Russia has shut off gas supplies to Europe. After a three-day maintenance period last week, Russian energy giant Gazprom announced that gas deliveries via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline would not resume as scheduled. It blamed Western sanctions for the decision.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, "problems with pumping (gas) arose due to sanctions that were imposed against" Russia.

Economy Minister Robert Habeck announced in a statement that following a fresh network stress test, two of the three remaining power plants will "remain available until mid-April 2023 in case needed."

The facilities as per AFP would be held in reserve in case they were needed to "make a further contribution to the electricity grid in southern Germany," where the development of renewable energy lagged behind that of the north.

According to Habeck, such a crisis is still "very unlikely" because Germany has "very high security of supply."

The Green Minister also emphasised that Germany was sticking to its plan to abandon nuclear power, with all plants being disconnected from the grid at the end of the year, and that it was not reversing course.

Poland's Ambassador to India Adam Burakowski has called on New Delhi to convince Moscow that the ongoing war doesn't benefit the country.

Russia invaded Ukraine in February, impacting Europe’s frontline states like Poland, which have been inundated by refugees. Poland, which borders Ukraine, has played a key role in providing humanitarian assistance to those fleeing the country.

Speaking to a group of journalists, ambassador Burakowski said, "India can talk to the other side and convince them that this war is also not in the benefit of Russia. I mean, Russia, doesn't benefit from this war, and Russia can stop this war by withdrawing troops from occupied territories of Ukraine."

India and Russia have close and historical ties, with defence and now energy being the main pillars of the relationship.

The ambassador pointed out that India's foreign policy is of "neutrality, which means, India talks to everyone". Further explaining, he said, "India has dialogue with other countries, there is need of a dialogue and since India has this special relationship with Russia, why not."

Poland foreign minister Zbigniew Rau was in Delhi earlier this year for the Raisina Dialogue and held talks with India's external affairs minister Dr S Jaishankar.

Poland played a key role in the evacuation of Indians, mostly students from Ukraine, when the invasion started. The country helped in the evacuation of around 6,000 Indians and even announced a visa waiver for them as they fled Ukraine.

The ambassador said, "Operation Ganga was an example of good cooperation between India and Poland. Poland provided the possibility to conduct special flights."

India evacuated more than 22,000 of its nationals under Operation Ganga.

The ambassador slammed Russia saying that the country is "using food as a weapon”.

“They are destroying and stealing crops of Ukraine. They are blocking ports, from which Ukraine wants to export grain.”

He further said, "Fortunately, there was an agreement signed on July 22 in Istanbul on the safe transportation of grains and fertilizers from Ukrainian ports to global markets. Just one day after signing the agreement, Russia attacked the port of Odesa which showed intentions of Russia."

He batted for Europe to decouple from Russian energy resources as well.

The Ukraine crisis has had a wide-ranging impact on many countries, but according to a recent report, the impact on the United States, given its military expenditures is one not many would've predicted.

Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reports that war has depleted "American stocks of some types of ammunition" which haven't been replenished on time, and that has sparked concerns among officials, who believe that this could jeopardize the US military's readiness in face of danger.

The United States has given Ukraine 16 Himars rocket launchers, thousands of rifles, drones, missiles, and other weapons over the last six months. The WSJ report citing defence sources says that a large portion of this, including the ammunition, has come directly from US inventory, depleting supplies intended for unforeseen threats.

Among the lethal weapons given to Ukraine are howitzers, which use 155mm combat rounds, the ammunition used to strike Iranian-backed terror groups in Syria last week. As of August 24, the US military has sent the war-torn nation 806,000 rounds of it, depleting its own stockpile to "uncomfortably low" levels, according to a defence official.

Since the United States is not involved in any significant military confrontation, the levels are not currently critical, the official continued, adding "It is not at the level we would like to go into combat."

The situation was "foreseeable", and was "easily fixable" says Mackenzie Eaglen, a senior fellow at the Washington-based American Enterprise Institute.

Reportedly, the military is currently conducting "an ammunitions industrial base deep dive in order to support Ukraine while safeguarding their "own supply needs."

US' military aid to Ukraine left its own ammunition stockpiles 'uncomfortably low': Report

Wednesday (August 24) marked six months since Russian President Vladimir Putin launched an all-out attack on neighbouring Ukraine. The day held additional significance for Kyiv because it was on this day, 31 years ago, that the country declared its independence from the Soviet Union. As the anniversary celebrations commenced, Ukraine also unveiled plans for how it intends to make Putin responsible for his crimes.

As per an AFP report, Ukraine is drawing up plans for a special international tribunal to investigate Russia's alleged "crime of aggression".

The Rome Statute of 2010 established the definition of the crime of aggression. However, since neither Ukraine nor Russia has joined the Rome Statute, it is unable to investigate charges of aggression.

Ukraine reveals plan to hold Vladimir Putin accountable for his 'crime of aggression'

Winter is coming and with it Germany faces the looming threat of an energy shortage. To deal with this threat, the nation's government has approved a new bylaw that will turn buildings colder and leave streets darker.

The law prohibits heating public spaces like town halls and train waiting rooms above 19 degrees Celsius (66.2F). However, social institutions like hospitals are exempted from this rule.

As per Guardian, the legislation will come into force in about a week's time and will remain in place for six months.

Germany recently had its Russian gas flows slashed to 20 per cent of its capacity.

Reuters reports that Russian gas giant Gazprom said the cut is because of a "technical issue". Berlin, however, claims that the action is politically motivated in light of the sanctions Europe has imposed on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.

Moreover, legislation was passed to give trains carrying coal and oil priority over passenger or other commodities trains in order to reorder transportation on the railways.

Speaking to the press, economy minister Robert Habeck said, "Overall, the measures save energy. However, not to the extent that we can sit back and say, 'That'll do now'".

The new law will also require the turning off of radiators in hallways, foyers, entranceways, and technical rooms. Buildings and monuments would no longer be lit just for aesthetic reasons.

Additionally, businesses may be prohibited from keeping their storefronts lit at night. The heating of private swimming pools will also be banned.

Germany's energy woes to turn streets darker, buildings colder

As Russia marks six whole months to the full-blown war that it waged against Ukraine, we have several takeaways. But, the most noteworthy of it is that a war situation has consequences not for just the parties involved, but for the whole world. Ukraine is on life support, Russian troops are suffering significant losses, and the rest of the world is dealing with acute food shortages, skyrocketing inflation, the possibility of a nuclear calamity, and other challenges brought on by a brutal conflict that has no sign of coming to an end soon. This is the stark reality of the Russia-Ukraine war. The Red Cross issued a warning on Tuesday that the crisis in Ukraine is taxing the whole humanitarian system and might have long-term effects on organisation's capacity to respond to emergencies around the world. Francesco Rocca, president of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, stated that the war, which has been going on for six months, has brought people to "a crucial breaking point" (IFRC). In a statement, he stated that as the conflict continues, "the tragic knock-on effects are only mounting, with rising food and fuel prices and deepening food crises." We take you through the ramifications of this war. The human cost of the war - Death figures Although the true toll is substantially higher, 5,587 civilian deaths and 7,890 civilian injuries have been officially reported since February 24. According to the OHCHR, the majority of individuals killed or hurt were the victims of explosive weapons including artillery, missiles, and air attacks. The body of a serviceman is coated in snow next to a destroyed Russian military multiple rocket launcher vehicle on the outskirts of Kharkiv, Ukraine, Friday, Feb. 25, 2022. Photo credits: AP Separately, on August 22, General Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, the commander of the Ukrainian armed forces, announced that almost 9,000 Ukrainian service members had perished in the conflict. This was the first death toll announced by the military's highest ranking officials since the invasion. He said nothing more specific. The number of Russian soldiers killed has not been disclosed. According to U.S. intelligence, 15,000 Russian soldiers have died and three times as many have been wounded in Ukraine so far, which is equal to all the deaths suffered by the Soviet Union throughout its occupation of Afghanistan from 1979 to 1989. Internal displacement of Ukrainians According to the United Nations Refugee agency, since Feb. 24, a third of Ukrainians, who number over 41 million, have been ejected from their homes, creating the world's worst human displacement catastrophe right now. According to the agency's data, more than 6.6 million Ukrainian refugees have been registered across Europe, with the largest populations being in Poland, Russia, and Germany Territorial loss to Ukraine In addition to the lives lost, Reuters estimates that since Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, Ukraine has lost control of almost 22% of its territory. A large portion of its coastline has been lost, its economy is in ruins, and Russian bombardment has reduced certain cities to desolation. According to projections from the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, the Ukrainian GDP will collapse by 45% in 2022. Uncertainty surrounds Ukraine's actual monetary loss. According to the prime minister, Denys Shmyhal, the entire cost of the post-war rebuild would be around $750 billion. It might be a lot more. Russian expenses Russia has also incurred costs as a result of the conflict, albeit it does not divulge them since they are state secrets. In addition to the military costs, the West has attempted to penalise Moscow by enforcing harsh sanctions, which have caused Russia's economy to experience its greatest shock since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. The $1.8 trillion Russian economy is expected to fall by 4%–6% in 2022, which is less than the 8%–10% contraction that the central bank had predicted in April. The economic impact on Russia is still significant and not entirely understood. It is unable to access Western financial markets, the majority of its oligarchs are subject to sanctions, and it has trouble obtaining some goods, such as microchips. For the first time since the disastrous months that followed the 1917 Bolshevik revolution, Russia defaulted on its foreign obligations last month. Global inflation The invasion and Western sanctions against Russia caused sharp increases in the prices of energy, metals, wheat, fertiliser, and other commodities, feeding into a developing food crisis as well as an inflationary wave that is smashing through the world economy. After Saudi Arabia, Russia is the second-largest oil exporter in the world. It is also the world's top exporter of natural gas, wheat, nitrogen fertiliser, and palladium. Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, global oil prices soared to record highs not seen since 2008. The most acute energy shortage since the Arab oil embargo in the 1970s has been made worse by efforts to cut back on dependence on Russian oil, gas, and oil products—or even to control their pricing. Gas prices for wholesale in Europe increased after Russia stopped sending gas through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline to Germany. According to Goldman Sachs, a complete cutoff would cause a recession in the euro region, with significant contractions in Germany and Italy. Global economy The International Monetary Fund currently predicts that the global economy will expand by 3.2% this year, down from 6.1% last year and much less than its previous projections from April of 3.6%, January of 4.4%, and October of 4.9%. The IMF predicted that global growth would slow to 2.6% in 2022 and 2% in 2023 under a "plausible" alternative scenario that includes a complete cutoff of Russian gas supplies to Europe by year's end and a further 30% drop in Russian oil exports, with growth in Europe and the US next year approaching zero. Explained: Six months into the Russia-Ukraine war, what are the consequences so far?

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine is affecting the global economies. The war in Ukraine has caused the prices of all sorts of products to rise. Not just gas, oil and fuel, but also foodstuffs. The conflict is also pushing European countries towards recession.

Fallout of Russia-Ukraine war: How the conflict is impacting global economies

There are growing calls for a windfall tax to be imposed on grain trading companies who profiteered amid soaring food prices around the world, following the Russian-Ukraine war.

The International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems (IPES-Food) has claimed that the world’s top four grain traders, which have dominated the global grain market for decades, have witnessed record or near-record profits or sales, reports The Guardian.

The group is forecasting that demand outstripping supply would remain until 2024, leading to higher sales and profits in the next two years and keeping the grains beyond the reach of the poor, the report added.

“The fact that global commodity giants are making record profits at a time when hunger is rising is clearly unjust, and is a terrible indictment of our food systems. What’s even worse, these companies could have done more to prevent the hunger crisis in the first place,” Olivier De Schutter, a co-chair of IPES-Food and UN special rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, was quoted as saying.

The four trading companies that are said to have profiteered are— the Archer-Daniels-Midland Company, Bunge, Cargill and Louis Dreyfus.

These companies, known collectively as ABCD, control an estimate of 70 to 90 per cent of the global grain trade, the UK-based news outlet said.

“Global grain markets are even more concentrated than energy markets and even less transparent, so there is a huge risk of profiteering,” De Schutte was quoted as saying.

Cargill saw a 23 per cent increase in revenues to a record $165bn (£140bn) for the year ended 31 May, whereas Archer-Daniels-Midland reported the highest profits in the second quarter of the year.

Bunge’s sales surged by 17 per cent year on year in the second quarter, and Louis Dreyfus recorded profits for 2021 up by more than 80 per cent on the previous year, The Guardian reported.

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, food prices have soared more than 20 per cent this year.

It said that about 345 million people are experiencing acute food insecurity, compared with 135 million before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Russian and Ukrainian spies detained while trying to break into a military facility in Albania

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday warned that Russian fertilisers and agricultural products must reach world markets "unimpeded" or the world risks a global food crisis as early as next year.

"It is important that all governments and the private sector cooperate to bring them to market."

A grain export agreement was reached between Ukraine and Russia this July, the deal is backed by the UN and Turkiye, and implemented by the Joint Coordination Centre (JCC).

The accord grants Russia the freedom to export its fertilisers and agricultural goods in defiance of Western sanctions, however, as per Guterres, Russian shipments of these commodities are nevertheless encountering "obstacles".

"What we see here in Istanbul and in Odessa is only the more visible part of the solution. The other part of this package deal is the unimpeded access to the global markets of Russian food and fertiliser, which are not subject to sanctions," Guterres said.

He added that "Without fertiliser in 2022, there may not be enough food in 2023. Getting more food and fertiliser out of Ukraine and Russia is crucial to further calm commodity markets and lower prices for consumers."

Since August 1, 650,000 tonnes of grain and agricultural products from Ukraine have departed the ports of Odessa, Chornomorsk, and Pivdenny in accordance with the conditions of the July agreement.

Earlier, due to the February Russian invasion of Ukraine, exports of cereal from Kyiv, one of the top producers and exporters in the world, were halted for several months, sparking concerns about a possible worldwide food catastrophe.

Allow Russian shipments to move 'unimpeded' or risk a global food crisis, warns UN chief

Following Ukraine's last-week success in obtaining a two-year respite on its foreign debt from creditors, Fitch and S&P have raised the war-torn nation's credit rating.

On Thursday, as per AFP Fitch said that the August 11 deal alleviates "external debt servicing pressure, in the context of weakening international reserves and acute war-related spending needs," giving Kyiv breathing room on approximately $6 billion in principal and interest outstanding on Eurobonds.

In spite of the fact that Fitch has improved Ukraine's rating from RD to CC, the rating still indicates that there is still a chance of default.

"Despite this debt servicing relief, the 'CC' rating reflects unresolved debt sustainability risks resulting from Russia's attack and Ukraine's highly stressed public and external finances and macro-financial position," warned Fitch.

Just a day later, on Friday S&P joined Fitch in upgrading Ukraine's credit rating.

In a statement, the agency said that raising the country's foreign debt credit rating to CCC+ "reflects strong committed international financial support to Ukraine, coupled with eroding, albeit still relatively high, foreign exchange reserves."

"As a result, the near-term risks to the government's liquidity position and, more broadly, its capacity to honor commercial debt, including in foreign currency, appear manageable," AFP reported S&P as saying.

However, S&P stated this is based on the presumption that donors like the US and EU will continue to fund Kyiv in the months ahead.

It also said that a loan agreement with the IMF might lower Ukraine's burden.

Even with the increase, S&P cautioned that because of the ongoing conflict with Russia, Ukraine's ability to pay its debts on time "is highly dependent" on variables largely outside of government control".

Last week, Fitch had downgraded Ukraine's ratings to restricted default, while S&P Global had downgraded the nation to selective default.

Following Ukraine's last-week success in obtaining a two-year respite on its foreign debt from creditors, Fitch and S&P have raised the war-torn nation's credit rating.

Watch | Gravitas: Weapons and explosives inside Ukraine's nuclear power plant "Despite this debt servicing relief, the 'CC' rating reflects unresolved debt sustainability risks resulting from Russia's attack and Ukraine's highly stressed public and external finances and macro-financial position," warned Fitch. Just a day later, on Friday S&P joined Fitch in upgrading Ukraine's credit rating. Also read | Systematic shelling of Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant by Ukraine risk of 'catastrophe': Putin In a statement, the agency said that raising the country's foreign debt credit rating to CCC+ "reflects strong committed international financial support to Ukraine, coupled with eroding, albeit still relatively high, foreign exchange reserves." "As a result, the near-term risks to the government's liquidity position and, more broadly, its capacity to honor commercial debt, including in foreign currency, appear manageable," AFP reported S&P as saying. However, S&P stated this is based on the presumption that donors like the US and EU will continue to fund Kyiv in the months ahead. Also read | US announces fresh arms package worth USD 775 mn for Ukraine It also said that a loan agreement with the IMF might lower Ukraine's burden. As Turkey warns of 'another Chernobyl', Zelensky says 'no peace' until Russia withdraws its troops

Fears of a nuclear disaster in Ukraine are growing every day as the country and its aggressor Russia, continue to engage in strikes around Europe's largest nuclear power plant, Zaporizhzhia.

For the last two weeks, the power plant has been at grave risk as shelling around it continues. This has raised concern among the international community, United Nations nuclear watchdog IAEA has even warned of impending nuclear disaster and has called for a demilitarised zone.

NATO too has called for an urgent need to inspect the power plant.

For insights into the looming tragedy, WION spoke to senior journalist Mac William Bishop, who is currently situated near Mykolaiv, Ukraine. When asked about the present scenario around the Zaporizhzhia power plant, Bishop noted that the situation "isn't clear" at this time.

As per him "Russian military forces are in control of the nuclear power plant however the Ukrainian workers that operate the plant still continue to go to work, maintain the plant and ensure its safe operation."

Bishop says that the situation isn’t that bad at the moment, but that there is a concern that "it could become quite bad, quite quickly"

Talking about the 1986 Chornobyl disaster, he said that Ukraine has been the scene of one of the worst nuclear accidents in human history, the fallout of which affected the whole of Europe and the site of which is still the scene of an exclusion zone "where people still can't live and possibly won't be able to for hundreds of years".

"There is a major concern obviously, when you talk about mixing nuclear reactors and high explosives, military grade weapons...the possibility that there could be a catastrophic failure is real and I think that is why so many actors in the international community are now concerned about what is happening in this location."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that the impending disaster would affect the whole of Europe and has requested international agencies to intervene.

In Bishop's view "It has also been the strategy of the Ukrainian government to try to get more international actors involved in this conflict and so of course that is also part of the reason why they are reaching out to the IAEA and UN for assistance in dealing with this issue"

Following the plant's strike in March, nuclear catastrophe was narrowly avoided. Fortunately, there was no radiation leak and there was no damage to the reactors. The plant has remained at the front lines of the Russia-Ukraine conflict ever since and the two nations continue to blame one another for the strike.

Talking about the ongoing blame game between Russia and Ukraine and his thoughts on who actually shelled the plant Bishop remarked "If Russian troops are occupying this nuclear power plant it would make little sense for the Ukrainians to shell the facility in order to try and liberate it. Meanwhile, why the Russians would shell a facility that they are controlling also makes little sense from a strategic and tactical standpoint."

He pointed out that "there is a very intensive propaganda, information war being conducted by both Ukraine and Russia, on social media platforms, through traditional news outlets," and that "each side is working to shape the narrative to their advantage"

"We simply don't have enough details about what exactly is happened or the nature of these shelling, the origin of it to make any kind of clear assessment at this point," he added.

As per reports, on Thursday (August 18), United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan in Kyiv.

The question is: Will the upcoming visits by the heads of the UN and a possible visit by the IAEA chief have any impact or potentially calm things down?

"I think that is certainly the hope of any responsible party that's looking at events around this nuclear power plant. Unfortunately, international organisations like the UN, they've not proven to be particularly affective in this conflict. But there are some signs of hope because there have been some isolated incidents in which the UN was able to achieve limited evacuations of non-combatants in key areas for example," said Bishop.

Although demilitarising the area around the nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia would resolve this immediate issue, it wouldn't address the larger issues or the conflict, he said, adding that it is important to keep in mind that this is a critical situation.

Finland limits visas to Russian tourists who were using nation as a gateway to Europe amid sanctions

On Tuesday, jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny called for a systematic crackdown on Russian oligarchs who have been backing Vladimir Putin's military campaign in Ukraine.

Calling attention to the pre-existing sanctions by the United States, European Union or the United Kingdom on some of Russia's wealthiest, Navalny pointed out that only 46 of the Forbes list of Russia's 200 richest people have been hit by western sanctions.

Jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny calls for 'an all-out war on Putin's oligarchs'

The Russia-Ukraine war is in its fifth month with no signs of abating. During the course of the war, cyberspace also became a battleground with multiple attacks being reported by the media. Now, Energoatom, a nuclear operator in Ukraine, disclosed on its website on Tuesday what it called "the most powerful cyberattack since the start of the Russian invasion".

However, the nuclear operator claimed that none of its activities had been affected.

As per AFP, taking to Telegram, the operator posted that the Energoatom website was the target of an unprecedented hack since the beginning of the Russian invasion on August 16, 2022. and that the attack originated "from Russian territory".

According to Energoatom, the Russian "popular cyberarmy" group attacked the website for three hours using more than 7 million internet bots.

However the assault, "did not have a considerable impact on the work of the Energoatom website".

As per AFP, around noon, a Russian Telegram channel with the name "popular cyberarmy" urged its users to assault the website of the Ukrainian nuclear operator.

However, by Tuesday, it had declared a "change" of course, directing supporters to a new target — the sluggish website of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance.

The cyberattack occurs as resentment rises over the country's southern Zaporizhzhia power facility, which Russian forces took control of in March just after invading its pro-EU neighbour.

Concerns about a nuclear catastrophe have been raised after Russia and Ukraine both accused the other of shelling the largest nuclear facility in Europe.

Ukraine nuclear operator reports 'most powerful cyberattack since the start of the Russian invasion'

President Vladimir Putin has said that Russia is ready to offer its “most advance weapons” to its allies and is ready to cooperate in developing military technology.

His remarks came on Monday at the opening of an annual arms show outside Moscow that caters to foreign customers.

The Kremlin leader said that Russia’s arms exports play an important role in the development of a “multipolar word,” —a term Kremlin uses it to describe its efforts to counter what it sees as US global domination.

Noting that the Russian weapons are far advanced from the competition, Putin said that Moscow cherishes its strong ties with Latin America, Asia and Africa, “and is ready to offer partners and allies the most modern types of weapons – from small arms to armoured vehicles and artillery, combat aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles.”

“Almost all of them have been used more than once in real combat operations," he added.

The 69-tear-old hailed the Russian military’s action in Ukraine and thanked the allies for their support, adding Moscow could offer new models and systems.

“We are talking about high-precision weapons and robotics, about combat systems based on new physical principles. Many of them are years, or maybe decades ahead of their foreign counterparts, and in terms of tactical and technical characteristics they are significantly superior to them,” Putin said.

Russia accounts for around 20 per cent of global weapons sales, and is the world’s second-largest arms exporter, behind the US. From 2016 to 2020, Moscow sold $28bn of weapons to 45 countries.

Moscow exports nearly 90 per cent of its arms to 10 countries. Its biggest customer is India, which has bought 23 per cent of Russia’s weapons for some $6.5bn over the past five years. Half of India’s total arms imports, 49.3 per cent, come from Russia, according to Al Jazeera.

Explosions rock ammunition depot in Russia-controlled Crimea, Ukraine's role suspected

As the international community expresses concern about the fighting around Europe's largest nuclear power plant, Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday (August 13) that his country is targeting Russian soldiers who shoot at or use the occupied nuclear plant as a shooting base.

Repeating accusations that Russia is using the plant as nuclear blackmail, Zelensky in his evening video address said, "Every Russian soldier who either shoots at the plant, or shoots using the plant as cover, must understand that he becomes a special target for our intelligence agents, for our special services, for our army."

Russian soldiers shooting at, or from Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, now Ukraine's 'special targets': Zelensky

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday (August 11) called for an end to military activities surrounding Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station as Moscow and Kyiv blamed one other for resumed shelling.

Fighting near the plant has sparked a "grave" problem, the director of the UN nuclear inspector informed the Security Council on Thursday as the body gathered to examine the situation. He demanded access to assess the nuclear reactor.

Speaking to the emergency meeting of the Security Council via video feed, Rafael Grossi said, "This is a serious hour, a grave hour and the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) must be allowed to conduct its mission to Zaporizhzhia as soon as possible."

The two sides have traded accusations over a recent increase in combat near the nuclear power plant, which Russian forces quickly captured after their invasion of Ukraine.

Russian ambassador to the UN Vasily Nebenzya blamed Ukrainian soldiers for the unrest in the area of Zaporizhzhia.

In order to safeguard the security of the IAEA mission, Nebenzya informed the Council, "We call on states that support the Kyiv regime to bring their proxies into check to compel them to immediately and once and for all stop attacks on Zaporizhzhia nuclear power."

Nebenzya added, "This is the only option to prevent a major radioactive catastrophe on the European continent, the risk of which is now more real than ever."

Washington also said that it concurs with requests from the UN and others for the creation of a demilitarised zone surrounding the plant.

The only way to guarantee nuclear safety, Bonnie Jenkins, the undersecretary of state for arms control and international security, warned the Council, would be for Moscow to put an end to its war. "This visit cannot wait any longer," she said.

International nuclear watchdog warns of 'grave' danger around Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant

Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, has warned his troops about divulging information to the press. He instructed government representatives to stop discussing Kyiv's military strategies against Russia with reporters, branding the practice as "frankly irresponsible."

"War is definitely not the time for vanity and loud statements," he said during an evening address, adding, "the fewer details you divulge about our defence plans, the better it will be for the implementation of those defence plans."

As per Reuters, the warning is tied to some remarks that "anonymous" officials made following the most recent explosion at a Crimean air base.

While the Ukrainian government has remained mum regarding who was responsible for the blasts, reports in the New York Times and Washington Post newspapers that quoted "unidentified officials" claimed that Ukrainian forces were to blame for Tuesday's explosions that damaged a Russian air base in Crimea.

Zelensky addressed his statements to government, local, and military representatives, as well as other individuals who he claimed were speculating on what was happening at the front.

"If you want to generate loud headlines, that's one thing - it's frankly irresponsible. If you want victory for Ukraine, that is another thing, and you should be aware of your responsibility for every word you say about our state's plans for defence or counter-attacks."

Security agencies have launched an investigation into one of the instances where officials have spoken to reporters, according to deputy defence minister Hanna Malyar.

However, Planet Labs, a US-based firm, has produced satellite photos that show otherwise. Images of Saky air base show substantial burnt ground that was left over from fires that started after the explosions.

Volodymyr Zelensky tells officials, 'if you want victory for Ukraine', stop talking to press

The Russian Defense Ministry rapidly downplayed the damage after explosions tore through a Russian air base in Crimea on Tuesday, claiming that an ammunition blast had left no victims and that no equipment had been destroyed. However, now satellite images by US-based Planet Labs point to the contrary. Pictures of Saky air base near Novofedorivka on the west coast of the peninsula display significant areas of burned ground left over from fires that had erupted after the explosions. The main runways of the base appear to be undamaged, according to a BBC report, but at least eight aircraft appear to have been damaged or destroyed, with multiple craters being clearly visible.

It points out that the majority of damaged aircraft are located in a specific location of the base where several aircraft were left without the protection of hangars and parked in the open.

As per the New York Times, videos taken at the scene and a report by local officials, who subsequently issued a state of emergency, painted a different picture. At least one fatality, more than a dozen injuries were reported, and hundreds of others have apparently been moved to shelters.

Officials reported that 20 stores, other buildings, and more than 60 apartment buildings had been damaged. However, it is still unclear how or by what the base was damaged.

Russia insists that the fire safety regulations were disregarded, which led to ammunition exploding in a store and causing the explosions.

Ukraine has not claimed responsibility. In a statement, the Ukrainian defence ministry said it "once again draws attention to fire safety rules". As Reuters points out, Ukraine used language that was highly suggestive and reminiscent of its response to mysterious blasts on Russian soil. "I think that Russian military guys in this airbase ruined their very simply known rule: don't smoke in dangerous places," said Ukrainian Defense minister, Oleksiy Reznikov. "That's it."

Watch | Gravitas: Blast rips through Russian base in Crimea It points out that the majority of damaged aircraft are located in a specific location of the base where several aircraft were left without the protection of hangars and parked in the open. As per the New York Times, videos taken at the scene and a report by local officials, who subsequently issued a state of emergency, painted a different picture. At least one fatality, more than a dozen injuries were reported, and hundreds of others have apparently been moved to shelters. Also read | Russia says 'detonation of ammunition' caused blast at Crimea military airbase Officials reported that 20 stores, other buildings, and more than 60 apartment buildings had been damaged. However, it is still unclear how or by what the base was damaged. Russia insists that the fire safety regulations were disregarded, which led to ammunition exploding in a store and causing the explosions. "That's it." Long-time Russian ally China has called the United States the "main instigator" of the Ukraine crisis. As per a Reuters report, China's ambassador to Moscow, Zhang Hanhui, accused Washington of driving Russia into a corner with repeated NATO defence alliance expansions and support for forces working to align Ukraine with the European Union rather than Moscow. Hanhui made this statement in an interview with the Russian state news agency TASS that was released on Wednesday. He also criticised Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the US House, for travelling to Taiwan, which China has long claimed as part of its territory.

"Their ultimate goal is to exhaust and crush Russia with a protracted war and the cudgel of sanctions," he added.

Russian journalist who called out Vladimir Putin over Ukraine invasion now faces 10 years in jail

“You cannot switch off death,” says Germany’s cremation consortium chairman, Svend-Joerk Sobolewski. The Russia-Ukraine war has given rise to many crises around the world; inflation, supply chain, and food security. But now, in Germany, another problem has come to light. With the sword of Russian gas supplies being cut off hanging over their heads, Germans now worry: What would happen to their dead? Businesses, including crematoriums, are creating backup plans to deal with the rising prices of gas and the possibility that it won’t be available at all.

As tensions between Russia and Europe get heightened over western sanctions, the whole of Germany is on alert for a possible cut-off of supply by Russian state gas giant Gazprom.

Taking to Reuters, Svend-Joerk Sobolewski said that in the case of any rationing, the industry should be prioritised because most crematoriums require gas to operate.

Death cannot be turned off, he remarked.

In Germany, people typically prefer to be cremated when they die, which might pose an issue if Russia was to shut off the gas supplies.

According to statistics from the German undertakers’ association, about three-quarters of the approximately one million persons who pass away each year in Germany are cremated.

That is a high rate when compared to other European nations, said Stephan Neuser, Germany’s cremation consortium’s executive director while talking to Reuters.

He claimed that the practice had roots in the practically universal practice of cremation in former East Germany and has persisted as a result of relocating families, an ageing population, and a preference for urns over unmaintained graves.

In the long run, switching from gas to electricity might be an option, but Neuser claimed that would take time.
