Russia blacklists 39 UK citizens, including ex-PM David Cameron for 'demonising' it on international stage

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said that the world economy is "teetering" on the edge of a global recession. The remarks come as the world’s three largest economies —the United States, China and Europe— are witnessing a slowdown and spiralling inflation.

In an update of the World Economic Outlook, the IMF. said that economic prospects had darkened significantly in recent months as a result of the war in Ukraine, inflation and a resurgent pandemic.

The agency warned that if these threats continue to intensify, the global economy could face one of its weakest years since 1970s, when a period of intense stagflation gripped the globe.

“The world may soon be teetering on the edge of a global recession, only two years after the last one,” Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, the I.M.F.’s chief economist, wrote in a blog post.

Put simply, the outlook for the global economy is “increasingly gloomy,” he said.

The Washington-based institution said that problems in China, EU and the US had triggered fall of global output in the second quarter of this year— the first contraction since the start of the Covid pandemic.

“Higher than expected inflation, especially in the United States and major European economies, is triggering a tightening of global financial conditions. China’s slowdown has been worse than anticipated amid COVID-19 outbreaks and lockdowns, and there have been further negative spillovers from the war in Ukraine,” he said.

By the fourth quarter of 2022, the IMF said that was forecasting global inflation of 8.3 per cent, up from its April estimate of 6.9 per cent.

The World Bank, too, had made a similar prediction in June for the global economy, saying that the Ukraine war and the COVID-19 pandemic have continued to hinder global economic growth.

‘Global economy teetering on edge of recession’: IMF paints a gloomy picture

Ukraine's first lady, Olena Zelenska, made an emotional plea to US legislators on Wednesday for more weapons to combat Russian invaders. Zelenska said she was speaking on behalf of millions of Ukrainian parents fearing for their children and that Ukraine needs air-defence systems "in order for rockets not to kill children in their strollers". Acknowledging that it was unusual for a first lady to seek firearms she insisted that it was necessary. She pleaded with the US lawmakers "Help us to stop this terror against Ukrainians". She also met President Joe Biden on Tuesday, who along with the US Congress has been eager to provide Ukraine with weapons, and has approved a $40 billion package in May.

Months after she interrupted a live TV broadcast to protest Moscow's military campaign in Ukraine, a Russian journalist named Marina Ovsyannikova was detained by the country's police on Sunday. According to AFP, her arrest came just days after Ovsyannikova demonstrated alone near the Kremlin with a sign criticising Russia's presence in Ukraine and President Vladimir Putin. The journalist had gone out for a walk with her dogs when she was abruptly approached by people in uniforms, reports Reuters. Her arrest was announced on her Telegram channel, along with photographs of two police officers leading her towards a white van.

Russian journalist who dared to criticise Vladimir Putin picked up by police while walking dogs

Taking a more aggressive stance in the ongoing Ukraine invasion, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu has ordered his forces to intensify attacks “in all operational sectors” of the war.

On Saturday, Shoigu ordered the military units to intensify their operations to thwart Ukrainian shillings in civilian areas of eastern Ukraine and in Russian-occupied territories.

The statement came days after the Russian missile stuck across Ukraine in recent days, killing scores of civilians. The remarks also highlight that Kremlin may be entering a more aggressive phase in the ongoing war, reports The New York Times.

The remarks of Shoigu, a close ally of President Vladimir Putin, appeared to be a direct response to Ukraine’s string of successful strikes carried out on 30 Russian logistics and ammunition hubs using several multiple launch rocket systems recently supplied by the West.

On Friday, Ukraine’s defence ministry spokesperson said that the assaults of the Ukrainian forces were choking Russian supply lines and had significantly reduced Russia’s offensive capability.

This latest development comes as the Russian forces shift their offensive to Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region, with their missiles and rockets striking cities elsewhere in the country.

Putin earlier this month indicated that Russia might escalate the war, saying, “Everyone should know that, by and large, we have not started anything seriously yet.”

The experts at the Institute for the Study of War claim that this new offensive posturing stems from the fact that Russian troops were “likely emerging from their operational pause,” reports The New York Times.

Saudi Arabia, one of the largest producers of oil, has joined the growing list of countries importing Russian oil despite Western sanctions.

According to data reviewed by Reuters news agency, the Gulf country imported 647,000 tonnes of Russian oil in the second quarter, i.e., from April to June. In the same period a year ago, Saudi imported 320,000 tonnes of oil.

For the full year 2021, Saudi Arabia imported 1.05 million tonnes of Russian fuel oil, Reuters said citing the data obtained through Refinitiv Eikon ship tracking.

The kingdom’s reliance on Russian oil is at odds with their Western allies who have been seeking to choke the Russian treasury through its sanctions, even as Vladimir Putin continues to fund his war with oil and gas for cheap prices.

"Saudi Arabia has indeed been ramping up imports of Russian fuel oils as there are no sanctions preventing this from happening," Peter La Cour, an oil analyst at Energy Aspects, told Bloomberg.

"Russian fuel oil is the cheapest barrel available to fuel Saudi summer power generation demand and makes economic sense."

Apart from Saudi, major buyers of Russian oil have been India and China, who are struggling to control inflation that has shot up due recently after the Russian-Ukraine war.

Saudi has been importing Russian oil through Egypt, accounting for at least 110,000 barrels per day in June. Cairo also imported 70,000 barrels per day from Russia in June, Reuters said.

This development comes at a time when US President Joe Biden is on a visit to the kingdom in a bid to restore diplomatic relationships, bolster security and more importantly, increase the global flow of oil.

Saudi’s oil import from Russia doubles in second quarter: Report

The Russian aggression on Ukraine has laid waste to many things: towns, lives, cultural heritages and a scientific inquiry. The European Space Agency has "officially" ended its association with Russia for a life-hunting Mars rover mission. As per Space.com, the mission that was scheduled to launch in the latter part of this decade, in the late 2020s was initially suspended over Russia's invasion of its neighbour. As part of a larger project, dubbed ExoMars, the European Space Agency (ESA) had been developing the alien life-seeking mission in collaboration with its Russian equivalent, Roscosmos. However, now ESA chief Josef Aschbacher has announced that this suspension will be upgraded to a termination.

Taking to Twitter, Aschbacher said, "today @ESA Council addressed the ExoMars Rover and Surface Platform mission, acknowledging that the circumstances which led to the suspension of the cooperation with Roscosmos – the war in Ukraine and the resulting sanctions – continue to prevail."

He added, "As a consequence, Council mandated me to officially terminate the currently suspended cooperation with Roscosmos on the ExoMars Rover and Surface Platform mission."

Watch | European Space Agency suspends joint space mission with Russia Taking to Twitter, Aschbacher said, "today @ESA Council addressed the ExoMars Rover and Surface Platform mission, acknowledging that the circumstances which led to the suspension of the cooperation with Roscosmos – the war in Ukraine and the resulting sanctions – continue to prevail." He added, "As a consequence, Council mandated me to officially terminate the currently suspended cooperation with Roscosmos on the ExoMars Rover and Surface Platform mission." As per the ESA chief "new insights on the way forward with other partners" will be provided during a media briefing on 20 July. Another casualty of Russia-Ukraine war: ESA-ROSCOSMOS's Mars life-hunting mission

Athletes from Russia and Belarus may not be allowed to compete at the Paris 2024 Games over Moscow`s invasion of Ukraine, senior International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Craig Reedie said. The IOC issued guidance to sports governing bodies in February to remove the two countries` athletes from competition. Belarus has been used as a staging ground for Russia`s invasion, which Moscow calls a "special military operation".

"A decision is going to have to be taken on what happens to each of these two countries, and my guess is that the general feeling would be that they should not qualify," former IOC vice-president Reedie told British media.

"Most people are struggling with how we could achieve some degree of representation, but at the moment, there is no clear way to do it. Therefore, you maintain the status quo."

Athletes will miss qualification events for Paris as a result of the measures, and IOC President Thomas Bach said in May that Russia`s participation was unclear. It has, however, not sanctioned or banned Russian members who sit on the IOC from taking part in Olympic meetings and has also not sanctioned the Russian Olympic Committee.

Of the sports on the Olympic programme, only cycling, tennis and judo have allowed Russians and Belarusians to continue to compete but Reedie said he doubted even athletes from those sports would be permitted to participate in qualifying events.

Reedie, former president of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), said it would be unrealistic to allow athletes to enter qualifying competitions once they have begun.

"It`s quite difficult halfway through to say, `All of you who have now qualified we`ve changed the rules`," Reedie said.

"So there`s a real issue for the federations, who have a clear instruction which they`ve agreed to that they won`t invite Russians and Belarusians to take part in events.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky has refuted claims that Russia's airstrikes on his country had been "paused". The war-torn country's President in his nightly address on Sunday said that there was no let-up in air strikes from the aggressor Russia, on Ukraine. His statement comes after officials in Ukraine's Donetsk region, said that at least fifteen people have been killed and an additional two dozen were feared to be trapped under the rubble after Russian Uragan rockets hit a five-storey apartment block. As per Zelensky the death toll from the attack in the Donetsk town of Chasiv Yar was likely to rise.

Russia-Ukraine war: '34 airstrikes in past 24 hours', Zelensky says there is no 'pause' in Moscow's attacks

Even as the Russian aggression on Ukraine, which has resulted in hundreds of deaths, millions of displaced people, and ruined cities and houses continues after five months, Moscow's former president commented that sanctions, and attempts made by the West to punish a nuclear power like Russia, could endanger humanity. Taking to Telegram, on Wednesday, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, now deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, said "The idea of punishing a country that has one of the largest nuclear potentials is absurd. And potentially poses a threat to the existence of humanity."

The February 24th invasion of Ukraine has triggered some serious sanctions against Russia. The event has also led to the souring of relations between Moscow and the West. As per Reuters, this is the most serious crisis in relations since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis when it was believed that a nuclear war was imminent.

Now, history seems to be repeating itself. The threat of a nuclear attack remains imminent. According to the Federation of American Scientists, Russia and the United States jointly hold around 4,000 nuclear warheads, controlling nearly 90 per cent of the world's total.

As per US President Joe Biden and much of the West, Russian President Vladimir Putin is a war criminal. The Russian military, according to Ukraine and its Western supporters, has committed war crimes.

Construction of Indian ships in Russia continues: Indian Navy's Vice Chief

Wimbledon organisers and Britain`s tennis authorities said on Monday they have appealed against fines handed to them by the women`s governing body, WTA, for excluding Russian and Belarussian players from this year`s grasscourt events.

The All England Club (AELTC), which organises the Grand Slam, and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) banned players from the two countries at tournaments in Britain following Russia`s invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow calls a `special operation`.

The WTA and its men`s counterpart ATP called the move discriminatory and decided to strip all ranking points from Wimbledon while warning the LTA of sanctions. As part of the penalties, the LTA was slapped with a fine of £620,000 (about $753,000) while the AELTC has been asked to pay £207,000 ($250,000), the Daily Mail reported.

Wimbledon, LTA appeal against WTA fines for exclusion of Russian players

Lysychansk, Ukraine's last big bastion in the strategic eastern province of Luhansk, is in the midst of an intense battle as both the Ukraine and Russian forces are locked in a stand-off to lay claim to the strategic eastern city.

Russian forces have already captured Lysychansk's sister city Severodonetsk on the opposite side of the Siverskiy Donets river last week, after some of the heaviest fighting of the war.

Andrei Marochko, an officer of the pro-Russian Luhansk People’s Militia, was quoted by Russia’s TASS news agency on Saturday as saying that the militia’s red hammer-and-sickle flag was now flying over the administrative building in Lysychansk.

However, Ukraine’s military rejected claims that the city was encircled. But an adviser to President Volodymyr Zelensky admitted that the city could fall.

Lysychansk’s capture can be a major shot in the arm for the Russian forces as it tries to push deeper into the Donbas region, which has become the focus of their offensive since failing to capture Kyiv.

Rodion Miroshnik, ambassador to Russia of the pro-Moscow self-styled Luhansk People's Republic, told a Russian television, “Lysychansk has been brought under control," but added, "Unfortunately, it is not yet liberated."

Russian media showed video of Luhansk militia parading in Lysychansk streets waving flags and cheering, but Ukraine National Guard spokesman Ruslan Muzychuk told Ukrainian television the city remained in Ukrainian hands, reports AFP.

In another development, railway tracks and electricity lines in the northern city of Kharkiv were damaged in a series of attacks. No casualties were reported, reports BBC.

The southern city of Mykolaiv - on a key route to the port city of Odesa - was shaken by several explosions.

Lysychansk, Ukraine's last big bastion in the strategic eastern province of Luhansk, is in the midst of an intense battle as both the Ukraine and Russian forces are locked in a stand-off to lay claim to the strategic eastern city.

Rodion Miroshnik, ambassador to Russia of the pro-Moscow self-styled Luhansk People's Republic, told a Russian television, “Lysychansk has been brought under control," but added, "Unfortunately, it is not yet liberated." Russian media showed video of Luhansk militia parading in Lysychansk streets waving flags and cheering, but Ukraine National Guard spokesman Ruslan Muzychuk told Ukrainian television the city remained in Ukrainian hands, reports AFP. Ukraine`s Anhelina Kalinina said she will use her prize money from Wimbledon to help rebuild her parents` home after it was bombed during the Russian invasion. Kalinina said her parents are now staying at her apartment while the rebuilding work takes place at their home in Irpin, which was retaken from Russian troops in late March.

The town, near the capital Kyiv, was heavily damaged at the start of the invasion, which Moscow calls a "special military operation".

"Their house was attacked. There are huge holes in the house. There are no apartments anymore," said Kalinina, who is seeded 29th at the grasscourt Grand Slam.

"So now this home is getting rebuilt, so they can`t live there. They live in my apartment where I`m living with my husband.

"Now they are at home safe, they have everything. I`m grateful that they have the opportunities to live, and I am playing tennis."

Four months into the Russian aggression, Ukraine retreats from key embattled city of Sievierodonetsk

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) chief Jens Stoltenberg on Sunday warned that the Russia-Ukraine conflict could last “for years”, and asked member countries to increase support, militarily and financially, to Kyiv.

Speaking to the media pon Sunday, Stoltenberg said, "We must be prepared for this to last for years. We must not weaken in our support of Ukraine, even if the costs are high - not only in terms of military support but also because of rising energy and food prices."

Stoltenberg said the supply of state-of-the-art weaponry to Ukraine would boost the chance of freeing its eastern region of Donbas from Russian control, Germany’s Bild am Sonntag newspaper reported.

He further said the food and fuel costs are nothing compared to the one paid daily by Ukrainians on the frontline, adding "we would have to pay an even greater price" if Russian President Vladimir Putin was to achieve Moscow's goals in Ukraine.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who vested Kyiv recently, echoed similar sentiments in an opinion piece in London’s Sunday Times.

Ukraine`s Elina Svitolina does not agree with the U.S. Open decision to allow players from Russia and Belarus to compete as neutrals and hoped the Grand Slam organisers would take a firmer stand following Moscow`s invasion of her country.

Russian and Belarusian players are banned from competing at Wimbledon, which starts on June 27, but the United States Tennis Association allowed them to play under a neutral flag at the hardcourt major in New York.

Russian and Belarusian players, who also participated at the French Open, are banned from team events but are allowed to compete as neutrals on the men`s and women`s tours. The 27-year-old Svitolina pledged to donate her prize money from tournaments to the Ukrainian army before pulling out of the tour after losing in the second round of the Miami Masters in March.

Born in the Ukrainian port city of Odesa, Svitolina expected more support from the governing bodies of tennis and was completely against the policy of allowing players from Russia and Belarus to compete as neutrals. The silence from her fellow players from Russia and Belarus was also surprising.

"For us it was not really understandable why we didn`t get support from them. I feel like it created tension between us," Svitolina said during the video interview.

Svitolina thanked world number one Iga Swiatek for her French Open victory speech when the Pole urged Ukraine to "stay strong" and reminded everyone that the war was still ongoing.

On Feb. 24, Russia launched the invasion, which Moscow calls a "special military operation". A few days earlier, Svitolina, who is married to French tennis player Gael Monfils, found out the couple were expecting a baby in October.

"I was extremely excited about the news. And then a few days later the war started," she said. "It was lot of stress, we were really worried.

"I was actually more worried about the war than about myself. I don`t even remember what happened during the first few days. It was unbearable."

The war has changed her as a person. "The priorities changed, the vision of life changed," Svitolina said. "It`s not that I didn`t cherish the family time with my parents before but now I really enjoy spending time with them.

"They got a chance to leave Ukraine and they are in Europe right now. A lot of things changed inside, mentally. A war really changes people."

'I don't support it': Ukraine's Elina Svitolina on US Open’s decision to allow Russian players to participate

Despite the West announcing sanctions and trying to divert their oil imports from Moscow, Vladimir Putin asserted that they won’t be able to completely cut off from the Russian oil and gas for several years.

The Russian president made these remarks on Thursday after attending an exhibition in Moscow dedicated to the 350th anniversary of the birth of Russian monarch Peter the Great.

He added that nobody knows what could occur at that time, so Russian business would certainly not be “concreting over their oil wells”, reports BBC.

His comments come days after a US official admitted that Russian profits on energy may be higher now than they were before the war.

The United States and the European Union had agreed to ban imports of Russian oil and imposed escalating sanctions to punish the country for its invasion of Ukraine.

While those moves put a dent in global trade in Russian fossil fuels, they also helped to trigger a surge in global prices of oil and gas.

The EU currently imports around 40 per cent of its gas from Russia.

The bloc has pledged to reduce its dependency on Russian oil by 90 per cent by the end of 2022, but so far has not made any commitments on gas.

West won’t be able to cut off from Russian oil and gas for years: Vladimir Putin

Russia-Ukraine conflict: Finnish women take up weapons 'just in case' of an attack

Russian President Vladimir Putin blamed the West for the ongoing food and energy shortages and assured that his country would “guarantee” safe passage of exports from Ukraine-held ports if it is "cleared" of mines by Ukraine.

"There is no problem to export grain from Ukraine," he said in a televised interview, saying it could be done via Ukrainian ports, via others under Russian control, or even via central Europe, reports AFP.

The Russian president assured that his armed forces would not “launch any attacks [on Ukraine] from the sea” while it is being removed from mines.

The Russian leader mentioned the possibility of exporting via the Ukrainian ports of Mariupol and Berdyansk on the Sea of Azov, which gives access to the Black Sea. Both are under Russian control.

He also said ports under Kyiv's control, in particular Odessa, could be used.

Putin said that exports from Belarus is also possible if the West "lifts sanctions" against the Moscow’s ally

Accused the West of "bluster" by claiming Moscow was preventing grain exports from Ukraine, Putin said, “Of course, we are now seeing attempts to shift the responsibility for what is happening on the world food market, the emerging problems in this market, onto Russia,” he told Russian TV.

“I must say that this is an attempt, as our people say, to shift these problems from a sick to a healthy head.”

The Russia-Ukraine war has caused prices of food and fuel to soar, pushing the world towards food scarcity.

Blaming West for food and energy crises, Putin ‘guarantees’ peaceful exports from Ukraine

Ukraine announced Saturday the deaths of four foreign military volunteers fighting Russian forces, whose invasion has spurred a wave of solidarity abroad including from experienced combat veterans.

The International Legion of Defence of Ukraine, an official volunteer brigade, announced the men from Germany, the Netherlands, Australia and France had died but did not specify when or under what circumstances.

"We lost our brothers in combat but their bravery, their memory and legacy will forever inspire us," it said in a statement.

AFP journalists in Kharkiv last month were present at the May 21 burial of the Dutch citizen named in the statement, Ronald Vogelaar. Colleagues said he had been killed several days earlier by artillery.

The Australian was reported killed in May and his death was confirmed by a foreign affairs department spokesperson.

Tasmania's Mercury newspaper identified the man as Michael Charles O'Neill, 47. A tribute on Facebook said he was "driving the wounded and injured from the front line".

Stocks of iodine have been flying off the shelves in Europe due to fears that it may be needed to counter the risks of thyroid cancer if Russia invades Ukraine and causes a nuclear incident.

As Russian forces seized the defunct Chernobyl nuclear site and damaged Zaporizhzhia, Europe's largest nuclear plant, France said it would send 2.5 million doses of the chemical compound to Ukraine.

The following facts about iodine will help you understand the hype around it.

What is iodine?

The thyroid gland in the neck produces hormones that are crucial for brain development and vital bodily functions thanks to stable iodine -- potassium iodide. Since the body cannot produce iodine, it is essential to our diet.

Can iodine help in a nuclear accident?

In a catastrophic nuclear accident, radioactive iodine would be released into the atmosphere. Inhalation or consumption of contaminated iodine via food can increase the risks of thyroid cancer, as was observed after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster of 1986.

Iodine tablets containing stable, non-radioactive iodine prevent the thyroid gland from concentrating radioactive iodine. After becoming saturated with stable iodine, the gland can no longer capture the radioactive element, which is then flushed out of the body naturally through urine.

Is iodine effective in all circumstances?

Taking Iodine tablets will not protect you from other forms of radiation, nor will they provide immunity from it. These tablets are not permanent cures.

Are there any specialist recommendations?

French Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) notes that iodine protects only the thyroid and that the most crucial action following a nuclear accident is to take shelter in a hard building.

In addition, the tablets must be taken at specific times -- ideally, one hour before exposure to radiation and, at the latest, six to twelve hours after exposure.

Pregnant women, babies, children, and young people are especially encouraged to use these products.

"There is no point in taking iodine tablets as a prophylactic," the ASN warned. "It's pointless and it can cause undesirable effects or allergies."
