"Ishan by now would know that among all the available spots, the one that has the most competition is the opening. There are way too many openers and just two spots. He's going to be aware of that... but the good thing for Ishan is that he's not just a keeper. He's a good fielder as well. You double up as an option on the field. They are going to look at him as a pure opener like they did in the first game against West Indies," said Karthik in the pre-match show on Cricbuzz.

"He's got tremendous skills... he can attack from ball one. That's a skill every player doesn't possess. In the new age, players try and attack a lot from ball one. Teams that have succeeded in doing that consistently have done very well in multi-nation tournaments. So Ishan definitely has a good chance to come into the scheme of things," he further said.

Reacting to India's experiment with Pant as an opener, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar told Star Sports on-air, "The first 10 overs is where India have been a bit slow in the past. They are looking to take advantage of the field restrictions in the first 10 overs. They are clearly looking to score maybe 60-70. That is what they are looking for. This is an experiment, make no mistake. If it works, that is the template that they will like to carry forward as they go on to the World Cup in India next year."

"It's something that will certainly look at. What it does also, if India are batting first, it will give him some time to recover. If he gets out in the 30th or 40th over, having done his job, he will get a little bit of break when he comes out to keep wickets."

Gavaskar further asserted, "It's may also they (the team management) is looking to give him a sense of responsibility at the top of the order. With this, India started their home season on a high and also completed their 1000th outing in the 50-over format on an emphatic note.

With a 1-0 lead, Rohit &amp; Co. will not like to lose momentum and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three ODIs as both sides face each other in the second and penultimate match on Wednesday (February 09), at the same venue.

The likes of KL Rahul (limited-overs vice-captain), Shreyas Iyer and Shikhar Dhawan have been added to the squad. Rahul missed the series opener -- reportedly due to personal reasons -- whereas Iyer and opener Dhawan have recovered from Covid-19 and cleared to train on Tuesday (February 08). It is highly unlikely that the Rahul Dravid-led team management will include both Iyer and Dhawan at one go, however, Rahul is expected to return to the playing XI.

It will be interesting to see who misses out if Rahul is included in the XI. For the Windies, they need to address their batting issues at the earliest whereas a lot depends on Jason Holder and Kemar Roach with the ball. While Alzarri Joseph had a decent outing in the series opener, the inexperienced spin duo of Fabien Allen and Akeal Hosein will be tested by the Indian batters.

Rohit Sharma enjoyed a brilliant game as captain of the Indian team after making his comeback from a hamstring injury, in the first ODI against West Indies on Sunday. It was Rohit's first ODI as the full-time captain of the Indian team and he led from the front on the field. The Hitman could not have hoped for a better start as India defeated West Indies by 6 wickets in the series-opener of the three-match rubber.

Rohit won the toss and opted to bowl first, inviting West Indies to bat in the first ODI. The bowlers got the hosts off to a brilliant start as West Indies were reduced to 79/7 inside just 23 overs. While the bowlers produced an exceptional performance, they also needed some help from the Decision Review System (DRS).

Skipper Rohit reviewed as many as three not-out decisions by the on-field umpires during the West Indies innings and ended up getting all of them right. All three decisions were overturned by the third umpire as India had a field day in terms of using the DRS accurately.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar was left impressed by India's brilliant usage of the DRS and came up with an interesting suggestion. Gavaskar said it was time to replace 'Dhoni Review System' - a famous term used by the commentators and fans for the DRS, referring to former India captain MS Dhoni's ability to get reviews right more often than not.

Later, speaking on Star Sports, Gavaskar said he used to use the term 'Dhoni Review System' for former skipper Dhoni when he was part of the Indian team. However, he would now like to call it Rohit's system after witnessing the current Indian skipper's success rate with the DRS.

“When Dhoni was there I used to call it the Dhoni Referral System. And I mentioned it in commentary that you can now call it the Rohit system because he is getting it absolutely right so far,” said Gavaskar.

Definitely Rohit System: Sunil Gavaskar renames 'Dhoni Review System' after India's DRS success vs Windies

Former India captain Virat Kohli helped Indian skipper Rohit Sharma in taking a successful review during the first ODI against West Indies at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday (February 06). The incident happened during the 22nd over of West Indies' innings after India won the toss and invited the visitors to bat first.

On the fifth delivery of the 22nd over, West Indies batter Shamarh Brooks edged the ball to Indian wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant off the bowling of Yuzvendra Chahal. The on-field umpire was not convinced and adjudged the batter not-out. However, Chahal and other Indian players managed to convince Rohit to go for the review.

The conversation between the Indian players and skipper Rohit was caught on the stump-mic. While wicket-keeper Pant, who had a good view of the situation, said he was unsure if the ball had hit the bat, Kohli stepped in and convinced Rohit to go for the review. Kohli told the Indian captain the ball had definitely hit the bat.

"Rohit bat bhi laga hai and bat pad pe laga hai. Mere ko toh laga out hai (Rohit ball has hit the bat and the bat has hit the pad, I think it's out)," Kohli can be heard telling Rohit on the stump-mic. The video of the incident soon went viral on social media.

Rohit opted for the review and the replays confirmed the ball had clearly hit the bat of Brook before landing in Pant's gloves. The batter was sent packing on 12 off 26 balls as West Indies lost their sixth wicket in the game.

While she managed to recover from COVID-19, she had to be admitted to the ICU due to post-COVID complications. She spent over three weeks in the hospital as her health continued to deteriorate. The legendary singer passed away in the wee hours of Sunday.
