"What I enjoyed most was Rohit's captaincy," Karthik said in an interaction with the ICC. "I thought he led the team beautifully. Tactically very, very sound, and I thoroughly enjoyed the way the team played in the last couple of series against West Indies."

Karthik also stated that the duo of Rohit and head coach Rahul Dravid have “plugged small holes” that were previously there in the Indian team.

"The new captain and there's a new coach, I think they are taking the team in a fabulous direction. They've plugged small holes, which were probably there previously, and that has been the beautiful part about it. And along the way, in the journey, they've managed to become No.1,” said Karthik.

Speaking about easing Bumrah into a leadership role, Rohit said it doesn't matter if the vice-captain of the side is a batter or a bowler. Rohit said he has observed Bumrah from close quarters having played with him for so many years for India and Mumbai Indians in the IPL.

"It does not matter too much whether it is a batter of bowler who is the vice-captain. It is the mind that matters and Bumrah has a great mind of the game. I have seen it closely. Honestly, yes, it is a good way for him to step into the leadership role now," said Rohit.

There were a lot of positives for the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team. One of the biggest shining points was the return of Virat Kohli's form. While Kohli had&nbsp;two fifty-plus scores in the South Africa ODIs, he fell flat versus the Kieron Pollard-led Men in Maroon in the 50-over series. The former Indian captain got a start but fell for 17 in the series opener before turning the tide emphatically with a blistering 41-ball 52 on Friday evening. The 33-year-old Kohli started off aggressively and while he did get a tad bit slow as his innings progressed, he got to his fifty with a six.

Reacting to Rohit's backing of his predecessor Kohli, former India player Nikhil Chopra feels Hitman's statement sends a strong message to the Indian dressing room. “I had said earlier as well that Rohit is the right candidate for captaincy because he has earned the respect of the dressing room. Everyone knows that the captain will back them even if they are not able to perform a specific role given to them. Players know the captain will never humiliate them publicly and keep backing them completely," Chopra said on the&nbsp;Khelneeti&nbsp;podcast.

The legendary Sunil Gavaskar has backed Chetan Sharma-led national selection panel's decision to appoint Rohit Sharma as the captain of the Indian Test team.
