While stating that 'stats can be misleading', Gambhir said he doesn't feel Jadeja's 175 not out is the best knock he has played in his career so far. Gambhir believes the star all-rounder's crucial half-centuries and other important knocks overseas would have made him more confident.

"I don't think so. I feel the innings Ravindra Jadeja played in Australia or the knocks he has played outside India, he will get more confidence from that. Stats can be very misleading," Gambhir explained.

"There was a time after the century where he was just milking - Dhananjaya de Silva, Asalanka and Embuldeniya were bowling but if you talk about Australia or England, the 40 or 50-run contributions there are probably much more important than this innings," added the former India opener.

Virat Kohli received a guard of honour from his Indian teammates as he took the field on Day 2 of the ongoing first Test between India and Sri Lanka at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) Stadium in Mohali. Kohli is playing his 100th Test for India and has become the 12th cricketer to achieve the feat for the country after the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Kapil Dev among others.

After a standing ovation from the crowd on Day 1 one of the Test match when he walked out to bat, Kohli was lauded by his teammates with a guard of honour on Day 2. Before the Indian team was lining up to give a guard of honour to the former captain, Kohli had already walked into the ground. However, captain Rohit Sharma was spotted asking the batting maestro to go back and re-enter the ground so the team can give him a guard of honour.

To be honest I didn't think it is going to be that kind of a Test match that would get over in three days. It was a good batting pitch, there was some turn and some assistance for the seamers as well. A lot of credit to the guys, they bowled very well in tandem, kept the pressure and never made it easier for the Sri Lanka batsmen. We just ensured we applied pressure from both ends. Good signs for India cricket," said Rohit after the first Test ended.

Resuming post Tea session at 120/4 the Indian spinners continued their wicket-taking spree as Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed Charith Asalanka in the third ball post-tea caught by Virat Kohli making him his 435th Test victim and going past Kapil Dev to become India's second most successful Test bowler behind Anil Kumble who has 619 Test scalps to his name.

Ashwin is now ninth in the list of all-time highest wicket-taker in Tests.

Five balls later Sri Lanka lost Angelo Mathews for 28 to Ravindra Jadeja's leg before wicket and then two balls later Suranga Lakmal hold out by Jayant Yadav in mid-on without troubling the scorers.

Jadeja got two wickets in one over to take his innings tally to three wickets and match tally to eight to leave visitors tottering at 121/7.

Wicket-keeper batter Niroshan Dickwella and Lasith Embuldeniya tried hard to delay the inevitable striking a small partnership and taking their team's total beyond the 150-run mark.

Jadeja once again broke the partnership picking up his fourth wicket of the innings dismissing Embuldeniya for 2.

Jadeja added 130 for the seventh wicket with Ashwin, who made 61, and a further 103 for the unbroken ninth with Shami to effectively bat Sri Lanka out of the contest. Shami remained unbeaten on 20.

There were more lbw dismissals for Sri Lanka with former captain Angelo Mathews out to fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah and Ashwin picking up his second by dismissing Dhananjaya de Silva.

Sri Lanka ended the day on 108 for four with Pathum Nissanka and Charith Asalanka at the crease, but the tourists face a daunting task to avoid defeat on a track offering turn for the spinners.

Nissanka's stumps were earlier knocked back by Bumrah but the batter survived as the third umpire ruled that the bowler had overstepped the crease during his delivery.

Asalanka also managed to overturn an lbw decision against him on review. Replays showed Jadeja`s delivery would have missed the stumps.

Ahead of the start of the India-Sri Lanka Test series, head coach Rahul Dravid felicitated Virat Kohli on playing his 100th Test match on Friday morning (March 04).&nbsp;

After Rohit Sharma-led Team India won the toss and opted to bat first, at the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali, Dravid presented Kohli his special cap ahead of his historic outing in whites for the national side. Dravid told, "When you started out as a kid you must have wanted to play one Test for India, you stand here on the cusp of your 100th. It’s a testament to everything that is great in our sport... sweat, discipline, courage, skill, determination, desire, focus, you had it all. You had a great journey. You can be very proud of not only playing the 100th Test match but also for the great journey that you have navigated through."

“Congratulations to you and your family on this fantastic achievement. It is well deserved, it is well earned… hopefully it is just the start of many more bigger things to come and as we say in the dressing room, ‘double it up’," he added.

Australian cricket legend Shane Warne, died aged 52 on Friday (March 04). In a brief statement, Warne's management informed that the former Australian cricketer passed away due to a suspected heart attack in Thailand. Warne's shocking demise has left the entire cricketing fraternity mourning.

One of the best spinners of all time, Warne was known for his ability to trouble the best of batters with his spin wizardry. He produced numerous match-winning performances for Australia in an international career filled with several highs and lows.

Warne was the first to complete the milestone of 700 Test wickets and was the highest wicket-taker in Tests at a time before being surpassed by Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan, who finished his career with 800 wickets in the longest format. Warne also holds the record for most wickets in a calendar year in Test cricket with a staggering 96 scalps in 2005.

The cricket fraternity paid rich tributes after the news of Warne's shocking demise emerged on Friday. A number of current and former Indian cricketers including the likes of captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuvraj Singh and others took to Twitter to express their condolences.

So, it is very important to have your bat ahead of your pad.”

“This is usually taught in formative years. Nowadays, you play so much limited-overs cricket that you lose your basics, the good habits die down. You've concentrated significantly on fast bowling, so I believe Indian batters have a scope for improvement in tackling spin,” added Gambhir.

"It is very easy to deal with one captain for all three formats. I remember MS Dhoni saying that split captaincy doesn't work in India that well. We haven't had that over a period of time, so we wouldn't know. But at this point in time when I do see it, I think he (Rohit) is the man. Every time he touched something, it's turned to gold. All the series he has been a part of, he has won convincingly," said Dinesh Karthik on ICC show, The ICC Review.

Virat Kohli will become the 12th Indian to enter the 100-Test club when he takes on the field during the national side's first Test versus Sri Lanka, in Mohali, on March 04. The 33-year-old will join an elite list of Indians, spearheaded by Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar, by featuring in his 100th outing in whites.

Speaking ahead of the first Test in Mohali, during the press conference, captain Rohit spoke on the duo's absence and said, "Never easy to fill in big shoes of Rahane and Pujara. You can't put it in words what they have done for the team."

Revealing that both Pujara and Rahane can still make a comeback into the Test line-up, Rohit added, "Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane played big part in India becoming No.1 in Tests. It's just for now, we didn't consider them."
