Needing 173 runs, Mumbai made a good start with skipper Rohit Sharma (65) and Ishan Kishan (31) as they put together a stand of 71 runs for the first wicket. A poor mix-up saw the end of Ishan while Tilak Varma (41) led the charge with Rohit and brought Mumbai close to the win.

However, Mumbai then lost wickets at regular intervals before a thrilling contest in the end. Needing five to win in the final over, Nortje almost pulled off for Delhi which saw a dropped catch, poor fielding and missed run-out chance. Ultimately, Mumbai clinched the contest on the final ball where they scored two runs. Mukesh Kumar scalped two wickets while Mustafizur Rahman got a wicket as well for Delhi Capitals.

Skipper David Warner's fifty and Axar Patel's blitz of 54 runs helped Delhi Capitals (DC) post a respected target as Mumbai Indians (MI) bowlers bundle out DC for 172 runs in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 match here at Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday.

Axar scored the highest for DC with 54 off 25 while Warner played a knock of 51 runs in 47 balls. In the penultimate over, Riley Meredith took the wicket of Anrich Nortje to bundle out Delhi Capitals for 172 in 19.4 overs.

Mumbai will next take on Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, April 16 while Delhi will take on Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday.

Ajinkya Rahane led the charge for CSK with a fine 27-ball 61, laced with 7 fours and 3 sixes at 225.93, as CSK chased down the total with seven wickets to spare.

After the match, Dhoni would have been a satisfied captain as CSK's inexperienced bowling attack looked very good in contrast to their previous two outings. "You can not treat him like this. He played a good knock of 86 in 56 balls. I will not name anyone here. For instance, let's take Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli, or KL Rahul who are big names. You gave them plenty of chances but on the other hand, there is no place for Shikhar Dhawan in the team now. He has always contributed for the team. 'Was surprised to see why he was so aggressive with me': Former India spinner on MI skipper Rohit Sharma

Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma is all set for the latest season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as the predations are in the final stage. While Mumbai will look to put behind a disappointing 2022 season, their main aim will be to conquer the glorious title for the sixth time. However, ahead of the start he was disappointed to miss out on the services of star man Jasprit Bumrah and says those are big shoes to fill in.

“It will be a big miss," the India skipper said.

"It is sad, but we do understand how big his (Jasprit) shoes are to fill."

While MI are yet to find a suitable replacement for Jasprit, the franchise is looking to close in on a replacement as the IPL season is set for a kickoff in less than 48 hours. Mumbai will have the luxury of getting an experienced player but replacing Bumrah will be a big headache.

"Yes, we have been discussing a few options and hopefully we can close it in the next couple of days and let you know about it," Rohit said on Wednesday.

"There is an opportunity that is up for grabs, to fill that place. A lot of young players will get an opportunity and this is a platform for them to come out and express themselves. There are a couple of guys who have been with this team for the last two years and they are very much ready to step up,” Rohit added.

MI’s head coach Mark Boucher also highlighted Bumrah’s absence but insisted there is an opportunity up for grabs. According to him, some young players that can come in and make an impact with their bench strength also a feasible option. There are talks of Arjun Tendulkar’s potential debut for the franchise after he was bought for Rs 30 lakh in the 2022 auctions.

"We will see tonight (in a practice match). He's playing tonight. One of the things about international players is that they need the freedom to move around a bit. All of them have been playing cricket. Jofra obviously is coming off a major injury, he has been playing quite a bit of cricket lately, which is good. He's in a good space. He's ready to get up there and perform, which, for us, is a good place to be in. We will see tonight how he goes," Boucher said while addressing Bumrah’s potential replacement headache.

The schedule is jam-packed and Rohit, who will lead the side in all these tournaments, will use IPL to take some rest in between, as per the report.

"Look it is concerning because if the players are not available it is concerning. And we are missing players who are actually Playing XI players. They regularly play in the playing XI. With the three-match ODI series levelled at 1-1, India and Australia have locked horns in the series finale at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on Wednesday (March 22). Williamson played an unbeaten knock of 121 runs and scored the winning run to take the Kiwis home. On the flip side, Williamson also scored a hundred in the final match against England in what was the fourth time a team had won a match after following on.

Rohit Sharma who scored a hundred in the Australia series lost his form in the later matches and has paid a big price. Rohit is out of the top 10 in the Test batters rankings having lost form, with Rishabh Pant being the only other batter in the top ranks. Rohit and Co will now play in the World Test Championship (WTC), which will be their next opportunity to climb the ladder.

Virat Kohli on the horizon remains 13th in the Test batters rankings and scored a superb 186 runs in the final match against Australia in Ahmadabad.

The core of the Indian players will have the opportunity to consolidate their position in the rankings when India take on Australia at the Oval in the WTC final, starting on June 7.
