Samson isn't part of India's ODI squad at present. He last played for the Men in Blue in early 2023 before an injury, during the home T20Is versus Sri Lanka, ruled him out of action. A fit-again Samson hasn't managed to comeback into the Indian squad since then as the team management preferred SKY after Shreyas Iyer, a regular at the No. 4 spot, recently got injured.

After Surya's twin failures in the Australia ODIs, captain Rohit backed him to come good. After the Vizag ODI, Hitman said, "Of course, he knows that he needs to do it while in a slightly longer format of the game as well. I think things are there in his mind as well. As I said, guys with potential will have enough run where you know they should not feel that ‘Okay, You know I wasn’t given enough chances in that particular slot'."

Suryakumar Yadav&nbsp;has registered two first-ball ducks in the first two ODIs against Australia. He was sent back by Mitchell Starc both times and that too by getting trapped in front of the wicket on in-swinging deliveries in both ODIs. Notably, Surya last scored a fifty plus score in ODI in February 2022.

Talking about other players who can play at number four if not Surya, Karim added, "What other options do we have for the No.4 spot? Sarfaraz Ahmed and Rajat Patidar come to mind, but they are both injured at the moment. We can consider Sanju Samson as an option. It is very important to have a few options ready. But we don't know if he is fit or not."

"Hot favourites are India. India have a big plus point because in the recent past, I feel like it started from the era of Ganguly. They have the mindset of a world-beater. From there, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli carried on. In the recent past, say in the last 10-12 years, wherever India are playing, they are considered as hot favourites. That is special from India," Hafeez said while speaking to Sports Tak on the sidelines of the Legends League Cricket.

"And when the tournaments happen in India, when big matches happen in India, in bilateral series, oppositions have very little chance. Their success rate is very high. But, when big tournaments come, I think India are lacking in just one aspect. In the recent past, in ICC events, they are not able to perform in the big matches.

"You can describe it many ways, but the pressure of playing in knockout matches in ICC events, that is not there in bilateral series. It's quite similar to playing domestic cricket and international cricket. It's difficult to describe the pressure of playing in ICC knockout matches. India have not been able to handle that pressure in major events.

"They have lost crunch matches, against England they lost the semi-final. In 2017, in the Champions Trophy final, they lost. Then also, they were favourites. This is a pinching point as far as India are concerned. India now have a point to prove to the world. They should come and perform well in ICC major events," Hafeez added.

India's last ICC title, in the senior men's category, came in 2013 during the Champions Trophy in England and Wales.

On Babar Azam-led Pakistan's chances, the 42-year-old Hafeez stated, "Pakistan also will have their chances. They have one of the most versatile and lethal bowling attacks in the world. If you look at the fast-bowlers, they are match-winners. If you look at Shaheen Afridi, if he is fit and firing, the entire world wants to watch him in action. When you talk about spin-bowling, there are Shadab Khan, Imad Wasim and Mohammad Nawaz. There is a new young pace-bowling talent in Ihsanullah, he can also bowl in excess of 150 kph and hit the good areas.

"Pakistan playing in India have to also deal with pressure. Playing in India will mean a lot of pressure. A lot will depend on how much momentum Pakistan take into the World Cup and how the dressing room atmosphere is created to deal with pressure," he concluded.

Skipper Rohit Sharma was left fuming after India were drubbed clinically in the second ODI against Australia by 10 wickets. Rohit lamented that Indian batters didn't apply themselves at all. Among the batsmen who failed, it was Suryakumar Yadav whoes&nbsp;dismissal grabbed eyeballs the most.

The T20 batting phenom got a second consecutive first-ball duck as he did in the first ODI in Mumbai off the same bowler - Mitchell Starc and in exactly the same manner - LBW on an in-swinging delivery.

Talking about him, skipper Sharma said that he'll get enough chances and he knows that he has to perform.

Sharma also assured Suryakumar of a consistent run in the side to allow him to prove himself.

“Yes he got out in the last two games and the series before that as well, but he needs that consistent run, like back-to-back games, 7-8 or 10 games like that so that, you know, he feels more comfortable. Right now, he has got in the place when someone’s been injured or someone’s not available. As management we can look into the performance when you give that consistent run and then you feel that okay, the runs are not coming and (he’s) not looking comfortable. Then, we will start thinking about it. Right now, we have not gone that route,” Rohit said.

The three-match ODI series is currently level at 1-1 with the final match of the series to be played in Chennai on March 22.

He has obviously shown a lot of potential with white ball and I have said it many times before (that) guys with potential will be given some run,” Rohit added. Sharma also assured Suryakumar of a consistent run in the side to allow him to prove himself. “Yes he got out in the last two games and the series before that as well, but he needs that consistent run, like back-to-back games, 7-8 or 10 games like that so that, you know, he feels more comfortable. Right now, he has got in the place when someone’s been injured or someone’s not available. As management we can look into the performance when you give that consistent run and then you feel that okay, the runs are not coming and (he’s) not looking comfortable. Then, we will start thinking about it. Right now, we have not gone that route,” Rohit said. While left-arm seamer Mitchell Starc was the protagonist for Australia, picking up a five-wicket haul, openers Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh further hurt the hosts with quickfire fifties. Watching all of this getting unfolded Indian captain Rohit Sharma was unhappy with his team’s performance on Sunday.

Speaking to the media after another embarrassing thrashing at the hands of the Aussies, Rohit said the batters didn’t apply themselves better. He further expressed disappointment over putting up 117 on a pitch he felt had more to offer for the batters.

“If you lose a game, it is just disappointing. We didn't apply ourselves with the bat. Didn't put enough runs on the board. It wasn't a 117 wicket. We kept losing wickets and that didn't allow us to get the runs we wanted,” Rohit said.

Former India great Sachin Tendulkar, while speaking at a program, has suggested that India should pick their squad as per the conditions for the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia.

The WTC Final will be played in England from June 7-11 and the English conditions are known to be supportive to fast bowlers unlike India's spin-conducive pitches. Sachin, keeping the conditions in mind, said one has to understand the condition and pick the squad accordingly.

“In Test cricket, you will have to understand conditions for the next five days and pick the squad accordingly. We have played well and we have a good team, a balanced team. It would be slightly challenging for a captain to have extra spinners in the team to get the balance right. I am only thinking from India’s point of view, let Australians do what they want to do. We stand a very good chance,” he said at India Today Conclave.

Balancing the spinners in XI for WTC final would be challenging for Rohit Sharma, feels Sachin Tendulkar

The 2023 ICC ODI World Cup is scheduled to be held in India later this year and former India batsman Sunil Gavaskar says that India will have a change of captaincy after the marquee event.&nbsp;

The ex-India opener, while talking to Star Sports, has predicted that all-rounder Hardik Pandya will succeed Rohit Sharma as the next skipper.

"What you see with Hardik Pandya as a captain is a sense of comfort with the rest of the team. Maybe, it’s the way he handles the players, puts his arm around the players. He just seems to give the players a sense of comfort. That’s so important to give a player a sense of comfort so that he can go and play his natural game. I think he encourages them, which is a wonderful sign," said Gavaskar.

"I have been very impressed with his captaincy at the T20 level for the Gujarat Titans and for India when he is captaining the T20 side. I do believe that if he wins the first game in Mumbai, then you can almost stamp him as the India captain once the World Cup is over in 2023,' added Gavaskar.

Notably, Rohit had taken over the white-ball captaincy from Virat Kohli in December 2021 and took over as the red-ball captain in 2022 after Kohli quit following a seven-year long stint.

Rohit further said that he doesn't know how long the batsman will take to recover.

Putting a clear rod map ahead as to how the management will deal with players workload, Rohit added they would be sending some Duke Balls to the bowlers as well for them to practice and find their rhythm.

He further said all these factors are critical for them to do well in the finale as winning the WTC would be on their mind having lost it the previously against New Zealand.

"Look, I think it's quite critical for us, we're going to keep in constant touch with all players who are going to play that final and monitor their workload and see what's happening with them," Rohit said.&nbsp;
