So far in the calendar year, Gill has amassed nine hundreds – six for India and three for Indian Premier League (IPL) side Gujarat Titans (GT). In what will be India's last series before the commencement of CWC 2023, on October 05 in India, KL Rahul will lead in the opening two games with Rohit Sharma to return for the series finale. However, R Ashwin's comeback has made heads turn.&nbsp;

Ashwin, who has not played an ODI since early 2022, has rejoined the 50-over setup after a long gap. Many reports claimed&nbsp;that his inclusion was on the cards ever since Rohit hinted at his comeback post Asia Cup 2023 final, where India beat Sri Lanka by ten wickets in Colombo on Sunday (September 17), following Axar Patel's injury. For the Asia Cup final, India recalled Washington Sundar as a like-for-like replacement for Axar, but now the senior pro Ashwin has also been&nbsp;included. Meanwhile, Axar is&nbsp;part of the squad only for the third ODI, subject to fitness.

During a virtual press conference, Rohit opened up on Ashwin's ODI comeback so close to the World Cup. There are now strong possibilities of him making a late entry in the WC squad, especially if Axar&nbsp;remains unfit.&nbsp;

Rohit told, "With guys like Ashwin, game-time and time on the ground is not so much of a concern. Which is why we thought if he is an option for us, we need to get him in. I thought getting him in could give is a chance to understand where he is at, how his body is and stuff like that."

"It's not like he has not been playing cricket for the last year or so. Yes, he hasn't played in this [ODI] format, but he played Test cricket recently in the West Indies, and if I'm not wrong, in the TNPL as well. Of course, there's no comparison but he has had some cricket there. The games against Australia will give us a chance to look at where he's at," he added.

On Sunday (September 17), in Colombo, Team India thrashed Sri Lanka by ten wickets -- chasing a paltry 51&nbsp;-- to win the Asia Cup 2023 edition (eighth title overall) to strengthen their preparations for CWC 2023. Hence, Kapil has backed the national side but advised them to play 'passionately' and 'enjoy themselves'.

Speaking to PTI, Kapil said that reaching the top four would be India's first priority and then luck will come into play.&nbsp;

"I think if we can come in top four, that is more important and then it will be about stroke of luck and everything," Kapil said on the sidelines of the launch of the third edition of J&amp;K Open, to be played at the Jammu Tawi Golf Course from October 4 to 7.

"We can't say right now that we are favourites, of course our team is very good. Heart says something else, mind says no we have to work very hard. I know our team, I don't know about other teams, so I would say it is unfair for me to give a blank answer," Kapil opined.

India will now shift focus on the three-match ODI series versus Australia at home, which begins on September 22 (Friday) in IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali.

While Iyer remained out of contention since appearing in the first game against Pakistan on September 2 due to back spasms, all-rounder Patel got ruled out of the final after he tore his quadriceps during the Bangladesh tie in Super Four.

Talking about Iyer, Rohit revealed the middle-order batter is 99% fit, but because he didn't tick off some parameters ahead of the final, he wasn’t included in the XI for the summit clash. Rohit added Iyer has recovered and will return to the side for the Australia series beginning September 22.

"I know what's happening with Shreyas. He was not available for this game [the final]. There were certain parameters that were kept for him to tick off. I think today he completed most of it. I would say 99% he should be okay as of now. But he looks good. He batted, he fielded for long hours before we came today, and he was on the ground. So he's looking good at this point in time. So I don't think it's a worry for us," Rohit said during the post-match presentation.

When asked about Axar Patel, Rohit said it's a matter of ten days or so before he attains full fitness. With September 28 kept as a deadline date for all teams to list out their final CWC 2023 squad, India has about 11 days to take a call on Patel’s future.

We'll wait and see what happens with him. I'm not too sure whether he'll be okay to play against Australia in the first two games at home. But we'll wait and see,” the Indian captain added.

Meanwhile, for the final, Washington Sundar joined the Indian Team, travelling straight from Bengaluru, where he was attending the camp for the Asian Games. Sundar was straightaway roped into the XI in place of Patel, given the history of Colombo pitch assisting the spinners.

"Honestly, that injury to Axar happened very late in the night, and then we had to call a few guys to see where they're at. Washy was available, so we had to get him to come in and play the role and perform the job for us. Luckily, he was with the squad for the Asian Games in Bangalore. He was training, he was bowling. In addition, he has revived his Test career emphatically since his promotion as an opener in late 2019.

<h2>All Asia Cup final scenarios</h2>

The Men in Blue had a memorable 24 hours on Monday and Tuesday evening as they got the better of Pakistan and Sri Lanka, respectively at the Asia Cup Super Four stage. Bangladesh are no longer in the race for the final having lost to Sri Lanka by 21 runs and Pakistan by seven wickets. This leaves both Pakistan and Sri Lanka scrambling for the other spot in the final.

Despite losing to India by a record margin, Pakistan’s net run rate won’t be an issue if they are to reach the final. The Sri Lanka vs Pakistan clash on Thursday will be a virtual semifinal, with the winner going through to the final. While Sri Lanka sit second in the Super Four standings, they will be replaced by Babar Azam’s men if they get the better of them. A win for Sri Lanka will also see them reach the final for the second year running as they will end at&nbsp;four points.

However, in case of a washout, the points will be shared and Sri Lanka will qualify on a superior net run rate (NRR). Sri Lanka have a NRR of -0.200 while Pakistan's NRR is -1.892.&nbsp;

Although numbers suggest Sanju has a better ODI average (55.71 in 13 matches) than SKY — who averages a mere 24.33 in 24 outings, Harbhajan opines Suryakumar is a complete player — someone who can hit from the ball one, unlike anyone playing in that position.

"Because the game that Suryakumar has in the middle over[s], I don't think Sanju has that game. Even he goes for big shots from the first ball, but the reliability Suryakumar gives you — he can score big. Sanju, I feel plays the kind of cricket where there is a lot of chances that you get out," Harbhajan added.

Drawing comparisons with stalwarts of the game, Harbhajan said Surya (at number five or six) plays a similar role to Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni.

"What he can do at that position, neither Virat [Kohli] can do, nor Sanju or Rohit Sharma. Because what he does it's a difficult job, batting at [No.] 5-6. What [MS] Dhoni has done, what Yuvi [Yuvraj Singh] has done," Bhajji opined.

"Because batting there is the toughest," Harbhajan said. "Opening in [one-dayers], you know where to score runs. You have a lot of time. But when you go in to bat after 20-25 overs, you need the game to know where you can find gaps to get boundaries, and I don't think anyone in the Indian team can do that better than Suryakumar."

Harbhajan added he would have Suryakumar in the playing XI given his presence creates pressure on the opposition.

"And if it was up to me, I would play him in the team. Because when he is in the team, it increases the pressure on the opposition. Whether he fires or not. Because till the time he is at the crease, there will be pressure because on any day he can play a match-winning innings. He can hit 50-60 runs in 20 balls," Harbhajan concluded.

With the convincing win, Rohit &amp; Co. have entered the Super Four of the continental tournament, along with Pakistan from their group (Group A). In their first game of the next round, they will once again lock horns with the Men in Green on September 10. The venue is likely to be switched from Colombo to Hambantota due to the rain forecast.&nbsp;

Talking about Monday's contest, India opted to bowl first. While the bowlers produced enough chances, India were sloppy and dropped three catches in the powerplays to give Nepal a good start. Openers Aasif Sheikh (58) and Kushal Bhurtel (38) stitched an impressive 65-run opening stand.
