<p>Not all was gloomy this year even as mankind continues to fight and survive the coronavirus pandemic that brought many worldly functions to halt. ‘Unpaused’ is just that and more. Amazon Prime Video’s latest addition for binge-watch is an amalgamation of stories that sprout out of the pandemic but is essentially a tale of resilience, survival and most importantly hope.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In conversation with Ishwak Singh who stars in one of the stories out of five films that are sewed together for the benefit of the audience, he tells WION about his collaboration with Nikkhil Advani in ‘Apartment’ post lockdown and what inspires him the most as an actor.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Nikkhil Advani’s ‘Apartment’ features Sumeet Vyas, Richa Chadha and Ishwak Singh. The plot focuses on the fall and ultimate rise of Richa Chadha’s character as she comes to terms with her husband’s indiscretions with the help of a friendly neighbour.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Shot during the pandemic, Ishwak on his experience said, “Honestly, during the pandemic, doing anything normal also makes me a little anxious. Before starting the shoot, it did strike me as a strange time to be doing this but it’s also true that nothing excites me more than acting. So, the offer was like a blessing in reality.”</p>

<p>Ishwak signed on the film because of its “script”. “It made me happy as it talks of a new beginning. The script has helped me personally. It was cathartic,” reveals the actor who was last seen in hit web show ‘Paatal Lok’ alongside Jaideep Ahlawat as a police officer.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Filmed in Mumbai, Ishwak likes to call the films “lockdown diaries”.</p>

<p>On his role, Ishwak said, “When I think of the character, it reminds me of moments where I was given hope, when I got strength from someone around me. Sometimes I was on the other side of the fence. My character is also about finding hope from within. Humans have an amazing foundation on which we can hold ourselves well enough to tackle anything. This is where it was going. It sent me down the memory lane.”&nbsp;</p>

Ishwak Singh to WION on filming during pandemic for lockdown diaries ‘Unpaused’

<p>The central theme of Amazon Prime's original film 'Unpaused' is the pandemic. The anthology has five different stories with the lockdown as its common thread and yet each film tries to look for the silver lining amid uncertainty and gloom.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Borrowing some significant incidents from the lockdown that India witnessed earlier this year- six directors weave stories of friendship, of hope and of love that makes for an engaging watch.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In Tanishtha Chatterjee's 'Rat-A-Tat' a 60 plus woman is unhappy with the cacophony that has come with the lockdown. A noisy neighbour keeps banging plates and she wants the police to intervene. The police, of course, doesn't turn up but she soon finds herself reluctantly helping out a young girl who lives above. The two have contrasting personalities and are stuck together due to circumstances.&nbsp;</p>

<p><img alt="n" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="1025ded2-a4a8-4dd2-95d8-6e96627a283b" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/Untitled%20design%20%2883%29_3.jpg" /></p>

<p>In Nikhil Advani's 'The Apartment', the utensil banging and 'Go, Corona go!' chant is there in the backdrop. Amid all the noise, a lonesome, dejected woman contemplates suicide due to her soured relationship with her husband. While she thinks she is ready to give up, an over-friendly neighbour keeps popping up at her doorstep to complain about leaking plants.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Then there is Raj and DK's 'Glitch' which is the only futuristic tale in the anthology where a hypochondriac is forced to move out of his cocoon for the love of a girl. Things are mostly virtual with the man ever so often hyperventilating about contracting the virus while the girl rolls her eyes in frustration.&nbsp;</p>

<p><img alt="Glitch" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="0d92f0dc-fcd5-45ba-9f09-f24c4caa19bc" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/Untitled%20design%20%2881%29_1.jpg" /></p>

<p>The two most compelling and the best stories of the lot are by directors Avinash Arun and Nitya Mehra. Arun's film 'Vishaanu' has a migrant couple stuck in a dead township amid lockdown with limited resources. As they figure out ways to go back to their native village, they find solace in each other's company, their temporary shelter and TikTok videos.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Mehra's 'Chand Mubarak' talks of two uncanny people forming a rare bond amid despair and gloom. She is an educated senior citizen who enjoys living a life of solitude and he is an auto driver, helping her run errands and earning quick bucks- yearning to be with his wife and children back in the village for Eid. It's a story that not just addresses the religious prejudices but promises of a better tomorrow.&nbsp;</p>

<p><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/kXGfGV2v6GE" width="560"></iframe></p>

<p>Each story is about half an hour-long, but with deft writing and execution, so much is told in limited time. Each short film has its moment. 'Glitch' is the funniest with Gulshan Devaiah owning his character as a manic who is over-cautious. 'Rat-A-Tat' celebrates sisterhood in the most unusual way with credible performances by Lilette Dubey and Rinku Rajguru. They are chalk and cheese and yet make for a beautiful pair together. Richa Chadha, Sumeet Vyas and Ishwak Singh's 'The Apartment' highlights the importance of mental health in the middle of pandemic and emphasises on the importance of moving on at the right time.&nbsp;</p>

<p>'Unpaused' gives us the most heartwarming performances by Abhishek Banerjee and Geetika Vidya Ohlyan in 'Vishaanu'. The two talented actors transform themselves to play a couple who are stuck in limbo. And despite the overall sense of uncertainty and despair, the two find happiness in being together. The characters are not easy to play for the actors, but they deliver a compelling performance. I would've loved to watch a full-fledged feature based on these two characters.&nbsp;</p>

<p><img alt="unpaused" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="81bca9f3-7a3a-4030-b9fc-2999098a21a2" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/Untitled%20design%20%2882%29_2.jpg" /></p>

<p>Ratna Pathak Shah's and Shardul Bhardwaj's story too puts a smile on one's face. As a weary spinster who likes living a life of solitude, Shah's character eventually warms up to the friendly, kind Muslim auto driver and the two become friends while running errands.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The year 2020 will always be remembered for its collective gloom and uncertainty that gripped the world. 'Unpaused' tries to point at the human goodness, the resilience of every individual in such an unprecedented time. As we all rush to bid 2020 goodbye- and for all good reasons- 'Unpaused' makes us pause for a moment and look back at the brighter things that the year gave us.&nbsp;</p>

In Tanishtha Chatterjee's 'Rat-A-Tat' a 60 plus woman is unhappy with the cacophony that has come with the lockdown. A noisy neighbour keeps banging plates and she wants the police to intervene. The police, of course, doesn't turn up but she soon finds herself reluctantly helping out a young girl who lives above. The two have contrasting personalities and are stuck together due to circumstances. In Nikhil Advani's 'The Apartment', the utensil banging and 'Go, Corona go!' chant is there in the backdrop. Amid all the noise, a lonesome, dejected woman contemplates suicide due to her soured relationship with her husband. While she thinks she is ready to give up, an over-friendly neighbour keeps popping up at her doorstep to complain about leaking plants. Then there is Raj and DK's 'Glitch' which is the only futuristic tale in the anthology where a hypochondriac is forced to move out of his cocoon for the love of a girl. Things are mostly virtual with the man ever so often hyperventilating about contracting the virus while the girl rolls her eyes in frustration. The two most compelling and the best stories of the lot are by directors Avinash Arun and Nitya Mehra. Arun's film 'Vishaanu' has a migrant couple stuck in a dead township amid lockdown with limited resources. As they figure out ways to go back to their native village, they find solace in each other's company, their temporary shelter and TikTok videos. Mehra's 'Chand Mubarak' talks of two uncanny people forming a rare bond amid despair and gloom. She is an educated senior citizen who enjoys living a life of solitude and he is an auto driver, helping her run errands and earning quick bucks- yearning to be with his wife and children back in the village for Eid. It's a story that not just addresses the religious prejudices but promises of a better tomorrow. Each story is about half an hour-long, but with deft writing and execution, so much is told in limited time. Richa Chadha, Sumeet Vyas and Ishwak Singh's 'The Apartment' highlights the importance of mental health in the middle of pandemic and emphasises on the importance of moving on at the right time. 'Unpaused' gives us the most heartwarming performances by Abhishek Banerjee and Geetika Vidya Ohlyan in 'Vishaanu'. The two talented actors transform themselves to play a couple who are stuck in limbo. And despite the overall sense of uncertainty and despair, the two find happiness in being together. The characters are not easy to play for the actors, but they deliver a compelling performance. I would've loved to watch a full-fledged feature based on these two characters. Ratna Pathak Shah's and Shardul Bhardwaj's story too puts a smile on one's face. As a weary spinster who likes living a life of solitude, Shah's character eventually warms up to the friendly, kind Muslim auto driver and the two become friends while running errands. The year 2020 will always be remembered for its collective gloom and uncertainty that gripped the world. 'Unpaused' tries to point at the human goodness, the resilience of every individual in such an unprecedented time. As we all rush to bid 2020 goodbye- and for all good reasons- 'Unpaused' makes us pause for a moment and look back at the brighter things that the year gave us. 'Unpaused' review: Finding hope, friendship and happiness in the middle of a pandemic

<p>Richa Chadha turns yesteryear's star Shakeela in Indra Lankesh's new film by the same name. The trailer was released on Wednesday by the makers and gives a glimpse of the meteoric rise of soft-porn Malayalam star Shakeela in the late 90s and early 2000s.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
'Shakeela' is the unlikely tale of a woman driven by circumstances of going from rags to riches to drags and tells the story of the real-life beyond the reel personality people have been familiar with.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Such was the popularity of Shakeela, that her films were released in several languages including Sinhalese and Chinese.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
At the peak of her career, she gave the then superstars of the south- a predominantly male-dominated industry- a tough competition. It is often said that exhibitors would think twice to release any film that would clash with a Shakeela film!&nbsp;</p>

&nbsp;Keeping this unique story and the absolute intriguing narrative of the person in question in mind, the makers of 'Shakeela' has decided to release the film far and wide. Becoming the first film post lockdown to release in over 1000 screens, the film will open in five languages - Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam.<br />
<br />
Richa Chadha will be seen playing Shakeela while Pankaj Tripathi will play a prominent south star in the film.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Talking about his film, director Inderjit Lankesh says, "Shakeela is truly a labor of love and commitment to show Shakeela’s story is iconic in so many ways. Her story is almost folklore today, but the truth is that so much happened to her while she soared to success from nothing and then came back to nothing again. I’m happy that our producers are releasing the film so widely, gives me the confidence to know that it’s a film that will appeal to the larger masses. To release in so many languages was important because that was the power of Shakeela."<br />

'Shakeela' trailer: Richa Chadha transforms herself to play yesteryears' popular adult star

<p>In the 1990s, actress Shakeela was a force to reckon with. It is believed that her presence in films would draw crowds to the theatres. In 2020, as theatres slowly open up to viewers, it is rather befitting that a biopic based on her life gets released in cinemas to get the viewers back to the halls.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Makers of 'Shakeela' released the teaser of the film on Wednesday. Featuring Richa Chadha in the titular role, the film is multi-lingual and directed by Indrajit Lankesh.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Oozing oomph and glamour, Richa pays the perfect ode to the South siren who ruled the roost in the 90s.&nbsp;</p>

<p><br />
Capturing the life and times of Shakeela, the biopic traces the journey of her muse - filled with hurdles and discrimination. Hailing from a Muslim family, Shakeela at 16 entered the industry and owned every frame she featured in. One of the biggest releases since the lockdown, the film attempts to bring back Shakeela’s ability to deliver one money-spinner after another. Promising to be a crowd-puller, the film’s teaser starring Chadha along with Pankaj Tripathi and Malayalam actor, Rajeev Pillai has a scintillating touch that will tease the audience but fill them with awe for the enigma of Shakeela.</p>

<br />
Richa said, "I am happy that the film is releasing. Hopefully it will bring some laughter and entertainment into the lives of people and this depressing year will end on a happier note. Shakeela's story is unlike any other and yet it's universal. She is very well known down south and &nbsp;it will be interesting to see how it will be received here. She did rule the roost for many years, providing steady business to cinema halls in times of crisis. It was also great to reunite with Pankaj ji."<br />

<p>Speaking about the role earlier, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/pankaj-tripathi">Pankaj Tripathi</a> said, "I am thrilled that our little labour of love Shakeela is all set to release in theatres this Christmas. I am so excited about the film because I have worked with the very talented friend Richa Chadha in this film. I have a beautiful part in the film. I play an actor for the first time in my career. I have always wanted to play an actor on screen and bring out the idiosyncrasies of artists on screen. It's an interesting and colourful character."</p>

In the poster, the star is seen dressed in fashionable clothes. I am so excited about the film because I have worked with the very talented friend Richa Chadha in this film. I have a beautiful part in the film. I play an actor for the first time in my career. I have always wanted to play an actor on screen and bring out the idiosyncrasies of artists on screen. It's an interesting and colourful character." <p>Richa Chadha starrer 'Shakeela' is finally ready for a theatrical release. The makers unveiled the first look poster of the film recently. Featuring Chadha in the titular role of yesteryear star Shakeela, the poster has a hidden messaging.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
A popular industry folklore from the 90s suggested that the one star who could bring the audience back to the theatres was Shakeela, the famed soft-porn actress who ruled the South Industry for a good part of the era.<br />
<br />
Poised for a Christmas release, her biopic has an interesting poster as well which was just released. At its first glance, it seems to ape the 90s Shakeela films but the poster itself is a testament to her triumph. Donning the walls next to her poster are remarks often hurled at her during her career.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Shakeela's success, though, inspired many younger actresses to take their chance at breaking free from the toxic star structure of the film industry.<br />
<br />
'Shakeela' is the official biopic of Malayalam actress who ruled the roost in her days of glory. The film directed by Indrajit Lankesh also stars Pankaj Tripathi. The film is a classic rags to riches of a woman,who won against all odds. She was fat shamed, slut shamed, told she is too dark but every time there was a lull at the box office, she got the cash register ringing again. Offering a humane look at the fragilities of stardom, Lankesh and Chadha together celebrate the fighting spirit of their muse.<br />
<br />
Indrajit says, "They wanted her films either banned or censored and yet her films were running 100 days upon hitting screens. It's no surprise that she was dominating the industry in a big way which threatened many big superstars. Richa is fantastic in the part and she has done full justice to the character. There aren't many who would've brought out the essence so well but in this film she breathes life into the part of a woman who has seen-it-all."<br />

<p>In Kunal Kohli's new film 'Lahore Confidential', Richa Chadha plays an Indian Spy who is sent to Pakistan to bust a terror plot. The film which is a ZEE5 original is a thrilling love story and created by India's most prolific crime writer S Hussain Zaidi.<br />
<br />
The atmospheric and eerie trailer which was released on Thursday revolves around a humble, divorced Indian woman named Ananya and amidst her mundane-routine life, she finds herself on a secret intelligence duty in Pakistan. But her love for Urdu literature will have her falling in love that will eventually put them in a tug of war with each other. A contemporary, elegant and thrilling love story that is based in Pakistan and has a strong sense of patriotism and thrill entangled with old school romance. But the question is, will she do whatever it takes for the love of her country?</p>

<br />
Commenting on his film, director Kunal Kohli said, "In an OTT space, we hardly see spy thrillers with a romantic backdrop, hence Lahore Confidential will definitely be a refreshing watch for the viewers and I hope the element of classic romance will sweep everyone off their feet. We have shot the film during the lockdown and it’s exciting to have the trailer dropped too. The trailer introduces the audience to the characters and sets forth its dramatic premise. The film builds intrigue throughout its narrative and the background score establishes the spy-thriller tonality (you will see this in the trailer too)."<br />
<br />
Richa Chadda shares, “The film is a romantic spy thriller with a classic romantic backdrop. It has lot of high octane scenes and settles the dust at various intervals as well. Working with Kunal was extremely refreshing, he defiantly brings the characters to life and with its contemporary style, he makes us look like characters right out of a classic novel. I hope audience enjoy the trailer and the film which premieres on 11th December on ZEE5.”<br />

<p>Actress Payal Ghosh has tendered an unconditional apology to Bollywood actress Richa Chadha and withdrawn statement she had made against Chadha a few weeks back. The two actresses on Wednesday told the Bombay High Court that they have amicably settled their dispute.<br />
<br />
Chadha had last week filed a defamation suit against Ghosh for making a "false, baseless, indecent and derogatory statement "against her. Chadha in her suit had also sought monetary compensation as damages.<br />
<br />
Ghosh, while making allegations of rape against filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, had also dragged Chadha and two other female actors into the controversy.<br />
<br />
On Wednesday, advocate Nitin Satpute, appearing for Ghosh, told Justice AK Menon that both the parties (Chadha and Ghosh) have settled the matter amicably and submitted a statement of undertaking.<br />
<br />
In the undertaking, Ghosh said she was withdrawing the statement she made against Chadha.<br />
<br />
"Defendant 1 (Ghosh) undertakes to delete her statement and defamatory posts against the plaintiff (Chadha) on Twitter and other social media and further also undertakes not to state, make, publish any defamatory, insulting and humiliating statement (s) against the plaintiff at any time," the statement said.<br />
<br />
"The parties have agreed they would not file any cases against each other with regard to this matter and there would not be any demand for monetary compensation," Satpute told the court.<br />
<br />
Chadha's advocates Veerendra Tulzapurkar and Saveena Bedi Sachar also said the matter has been worked out.<br />
Justice Menon accepted the same and disposed of the suit against Ghosh.<br />
<br />
Chadha in her suit had also arraigned a Telugu news channel and actor Kamaal R Khan as defendants for uploading Ghosh's video and making further statements against Chadha.<br />
<br />
On Wednesday, Khan's advocate Manoj Gadkari told the court that the actor will not make any further statements but he intends to contest the present suit.<br />
<br />
The bench then directed him to file an affidavit and posted the suit for further hearing after six weeks.<br />
<br />
On September 23 Ghosh had lodged a complaint at suburban Versova police station accusing Kashyap of raping her in 2013.<br />
<br />
Kashyap was on October 1 questioned by the police during which he denied the allegations and provided documentary evidence to show that he was shooting in Sri Lanka at the time when the alleged incident is said to have taken place.</p>

<p>In what could well be one of the most defining commercial roles of her career, Richa Chadha headlining the biopic based on the life of South star Shakeela was easily amongst the most awaited films of the year. The film also critiques the male-dominated star system of the southern industry in the 90s.</p>

<p>If trade buzz is anything to go by, the makers are in talks with a leading OTT platform to explore the option of a direct digital release. With the pandemic resulting in a nationwide theatre shut down, waiting for a theatrical release isn't in the best interest of the invested parties. Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal move their wedding to 2021

<p>After meeting on the sets of ‘Fukrey’ in 2012 and then making an announcement of them dating at the world premiere of ‘Victoria and Abdul’ in Venice in 2017, Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal’s love story is now out in the open as the real-life couple have shot for their first magazine cover as a couple together.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Featured in the cover shoot for Brides Today’s July 2020 issue, the actors gave out the details of their love story. Though initially intended as the first magazine cover post wedding, the pandemic has postponed their wedding plans for the year.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking to the magazine, Richa recounted the first time she knew this was love. “We were at my house watching Chaplin - the 1992 British-American biographical comedy drama starring Robert Downey Jr. I was happy to see him enjoy the movie and was grateful to have found someone with similar tastes. That is when I said, “This is really sweet, I love you.” to him. It took him three months to say I love you back to me.”</p>

<p><img alt="ali fazal" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="da9484b0-c05a-460a-b3be-b1e775919ec8" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/New-91.jpg" /></p>

<p>But Ali has a special reason why he loves his Kuki (as he affectionately addresses Richa). She is Ms Butterfingers, he says fondly. “She thinks I fell in love with her only because of her clumsiness - and it surely is one of the reasons. She is as clumsy as it gets. If she is eating, there will be glasses spilling , food will be all over the place, and cutlery will definitely fall. Her most embarrassing clumsy moment was in Venice. It was at a fine dining event and Judi Dench was sitting at the next table. Suddenly a bean went flying over - of course, it was from Richa’s plate. She calls it her Pretty Woman moment!”</p>

<p>On being asked how Ali proposed, Richa said, “He had planned a romantic dinner on a small, secluded island in the Maldives. I thought it was for my birthday - I didn’t suspect a thing. We had finished eating and were sipping on champagne when Ali, being his spontaneous self, asked me to marry him. He didn’t go down on his knee, nor did he have a ring but that’s all right. After that he took a 10- minute long nap on the sand - I think it was because he may have been stressed about the proposal!”<br />

He didn’t go down on his knee, nor did he have a ring but that’s all right. After that he took a 10- minute long nap on the sand - I think it was because he may have been stressed about the proposal!”

In a poignant scene in Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari’s ‘Panga’, as Jaya’s husband and son come to see her off at the station, instead of bidding them farewell, she starts quizzing the two most important men in her life about what all needs to be done at home every day in her absence.

In a poignant scene in Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari’s ‘Panga’, as Jaya’s husband and son come to see her off at the station, instead of bidding them farewell, she starts quizzing the two most important men in her life about what all needs to be done at home every day in her absence. How many ml of cough syrup does the son have, what time does his school bus come, how many whistles does it take to boil the daal- hurriedly revising the daily routine before she embarks on a difficult journey- givings wings to her long-suppressed dream. The scene, along with few other similar moments sum up the ‘Panga’ beautifully and narrates the most heartwarming story of a mother who dares to dream for herself at a time when most are wanting to give up. Jaya Nigam's(Kangana Ranaut) life seems picture-perfect when the film begins. She has a government job, lives in Bhopal with husband Prashant(Jassie Gill), an engineer in the Railways and an over-curious 7-year-old son Adi. While she is a dedicated wife, a loving and anxious mother and a perfect homemaker- in the daily humdrum of life she misses her first love the most. She was a National level Kabaddi player once upon a time- and amid domesticity, Jaya misses the court and her old self the most. Mind you, she has the most supporting family around and Jaya left sports out of her own will to take care of her son who is born with a medical condition yet she admits to her ever understanding husband then when she looks at herself, she doesn't feel happy. The son is a sprightly young boy who insists on her comeback and the couple agrees to humour him for a month. But Jaya soon realises that this is her calling and she wants to again get back to the game. But taking up sports post domesticity is never easy- a fact that Jaya discovers with every push, every sprint and every bout of game. The beauty of 'Panga' lies in its simplicity. Director Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari along writes a very detailed screenplay with Nikhil Mehrotra which never overimagines or overdramatizes the narrative. The family of three lives in modest government accommodation in Bhopal, where the set up is just like any ordinary middle-class household and not a slick Instagram friendly household. As Jaya starts training, her rise is never shown as meteoric- she struggles, grapples to first maintain a balance between her family and professional life, then to prove to the world that she still has it her to make it to the Indian team with a body that needs 'oiling'. Sports dramas mostly narrate stories of underdogs, of triumphing over odds. The approach is mostly dramatic- but that is not the case with 'Panga'. Mehrotra and Tiwari along with an additional screenplay by Nitesh Tiwari, find beauty in the everyday routine. There is no oppressive husband here, no critically ill child or parent, no financial hardship- yet Jaya wants to get back to her first love- something that a lot of us can relate to. As Jaya leaves for medical camp, the husband tries to manage the household- as promised to her- and fails quite often much to the son's dismay. The parathas are served burnt, the bed is never made, the food is too oily, even the tiger make up for the school annual function goes awry - things that are part of the daily life start becoming glaringly different because the woman of the house is gone. The actors are pitch-perfect in their respective roles. Be it the helpful neighbour who often takes care of the child when the parents are away at work, to the helpful roommate that Jaya meets at camp who like a younger sister guides helps her overcome her shortcomings in the game to the central characters who all cheer Jaya to dream one more time. It is refreshing to see Kangana Ranaut play someone so normal and relatable like Jaya. She has over the past few years made her mark playing eccentric characters which have often been compared to her real-life persona, but perhaps Ranauat channelizes her mother and scores of other middle-class mothers in India while playing Jaya. Understated, restraint and very elegant. Jaya is like every other middle-class Indian woman who goes the extra mile to ensure their families get everything and often put their desires and aspirations to rest for domestic bliss. Ably supporting Kangana Ranaut is singer-actor Jassie Gill, who never oversteps and plays the supportive husband and doting father to the hilt. There's something really endearing about Gill's personality which makes him perfect for the role of the supportive Prashant. Neena Gupta plays Jaya's mother who is just as spirited as a person as her daughter. Richa Chadha as Meenu, Jaya's best friend and coach, gets the funny lines and delivers a commendable performance in the limited screen time that she has. The star of the film though is young actor Yagya Bhasin who plays Jaya's son Adi- a bright talented find who emotes through his big bright eyes and doesn't have a single false note. His scenes with Gill are so endearing to watch and the two make for a very good father-son duo- complementing each other with great performances. The filmmaker who has in the past made films like 'Nil Battey Sannata' and 'Bareilly Ki Barfi' and has by now completely aced the depiction of the societies in small-town India- where they are slowly getting accustomed to modernity but still are rooted to traditions and cultures. With each of her films, Tiwari makes small-town India look warm, real yet fascinating. It's that good and that real. The writers show Jaya rubbing off the Indian captain Smita (Smita Tambe) the wrong way in the second half which may appear a tad dramatic and unnecessary but ultimately they put together such a riveting, gripping, sensitive story that this little dramatization can be easily overlooked. 'Panga' works for its performances, it's an inspiring story and its detailed screenplay. But above all its Ashwini Iyer Tiwari's ode to mothers- the unsung heroes of our lives and that should be a good enough reason to watch the film.

<p>Richa Chadha is now trying her hand in standup! Yes, you read that right! Chadha will be a part of a new web series called 'One Mic Stand' where she will be mentored by comedians Ashish Shakya and Sapan Verma.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
The show’s format is that where a comedian trains a celebrity for a week and then a live show is hosted where the two mentors perform their set in front of a live audience but the audience is unaware that the celebrity is a surprise guest who’s performing as the last act on the episode basis his/her training her their respective mentors.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Chadha, who is known for serious, thought-provoking roles in cinema, admits that comedy is her favourite genre. Her character 'Bholi Punjaban' in the film 'Fukrey' is still remembered.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
“I love to see people laugh, it’s truly a joyous thought to stand on stage and spread humour with your words. And to know, I can do so is such a satisfying feeling. This show has an innovative concept. I have dabbled in stand up before very briefly but it was quite a challenge taking this on. Sapan and Ashish have been admirable mentors, pushing me to do better at each step. They have distinctly different styles and I imbibed a lot from their individual style. It has been both daunting and exciting to take it up professionally, even thought for a brief while and learning from the experts. Humour, for me, is a fairly natural and organic way of expressing myself. I struggled with how much of myself to reveal, because I am aware people think of me as a very serious person. So it was confusing, it is an experiment for me at best, but then I owe my career to experimentation”, said the actress.<br />
<br />
The actress' brand of comedy is more satirical and she has a penchant for dry humour as well. She has always been experimentative with her work through her choices of projects both on and off-screen. Donning many hats, whilst being an actress, Richa has always explored more than what her job demands. This year itself, she has shot for a movie ('Panga') and released another ('Section 375'), while juggling with the shoot of her upcoming season 2 of her successful series, 'Inside Edge'. She took up belly dancing classes as well as is finishing her book. Now, with comedy, it seems Richa is once again trying to venture out of her comfort zone.<br />

'Section 375' teaser: Richa Chadha, Akshaye Khanna's film is a gritty courtroom drama

Actors Vicky Kaushal, Richa Chadha and Shweta Tripathi went down the memory lane as their film 'Masaan' completed 4 years on Wednesday. While Vicky Kaushal and Shweta Tripathi shared nostalgic posts on Instagram, Richa said even though she loved playing her character Devi in the film, she could not identify with her becasuse she is essentially a rebel.

"I don`t identify with my character in `Masaan` because I am somewhat a rebel. I have found my way. I have, despite all the challenges in life, fought and created a space for myself. In her own way Devi also fights, but I feel she stumbles a lot more than I ever would. That is where she gets stuck in life," Richa told a news agency. In Neeraj Ghaywan`s film, Richa played Devi, who struggles to shake off the smalltown stigma towards pre-marital sex. Vicky Kaushal and Shweta Tripathi played the film`s other protagonists, Deepak and Shalu, who attempt to transcend the restrictions of their casteist society. The 32-year-old actress feels had the film released today, it would have received better distribution and promotional facilities. "The true test of a film is when it becomes memorable. That`s why we like old songs. Sometimes you don`t get box-office recognition, but nobody was expecting (box-office success) for this film. For me, the best thing is that people continue to appreciate the film," she added. View this post on Instagram Masaan has given me a lifetime of memories. As I write this, I can't help but get choked up. Images flash before me - of desolate, dusty Ganga ghats, of steel tiffin boxes wrapped in plastic bags, of small town dreams, a floral plastic tablecloth. And then of crazy, drunken parties in France, of carrying heels in your hands because your feet ache from dancing, of a standing ovation that made adults sob like babies, of group huddles, of walking the red carpet at Cannes while hearing your name announced alongside legends like Marion Cotillard, of a hug from Naseer saab, of people's glimmering eyes as they search for words, of silence after the end credits, of my parents' beaming faces as they saw a hobby turn into a career, of red balloons and a small gift box wrapped in purple paper. Masaan is immortalised by the people that were in it - behind and in front of the camera. And now by you, the audience that saw it and became a part of that world. It shall now forever inhabit our collective imagination, in tiny, undetectable ways. Devi will always be alive, long after Richa is gone. Tricky thing to come to terms with. #4YearsOfMasaan #Masaan #Devi #Ghatsofganga #cannes #journeyofalifetime #memoriesforlife #cannes A post shared by Richa Chadha (@therichachadha) on Jul 24, 2019 at 12:02am PDT × 'Masaan' was screened in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. It won two awards. Vicky who played the role of Deepak Kumar, a Varanasi boy from the Dom community whose family works at cremation ghats, shared a picture of the ghats where sat for hours to seep into the character before the filming. "For days before we started filming Masaan, I`d sit here for hours at a stretch, quietly watching bodies getting burnt one after the other... dark, fair, beautiful, ugly, rich, poor, fat, thin... All of them turning into the same colour of ash. Leaving behind, just their deeds, teaching me the most important lesson of my life. My job was to put life into Deepak, what eventually happened was the other way around. Four years back, I got to ask you all a question... "(are we friends now?) ...Answer to which, I keep getting till date. Here`s to 4 years of our beautiful friendship. I cherish it every day of my life. Thank You," he captioned the picture on Instagram. 'Masaan' completes 4 years; Vicky Kaushal, Shweta Tripathi and Richa Chadha go down the memory lane

<p>When Vidya Balan portrayed Silk Smitha in the 2012 film The Dirty Picture, many scoffed as to why was there a need to make a film on a B-grade actress in the first place. Apart from being one of the best films of that year, with a stellar performance by Balan, The Dirty Picture also threw light on the murky business of cinema.</p>

<p>Silk was a star in her own right, had a considerable amount of fan following even yet was never considered an A-lister. Similar to Silk was the career trajectory of Malayalam star Shakeela. As Richa Chadha gears up to play Shakeela, the actress, who ruled the Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu film industry in the 90s, here are some lesser known details about her.</p>

<p>Born as C Shakeela Begum in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh to a lower-middle class family, Shakeela had a difficult life while growing up. Her father did meagre jobs to make ends meet and she was part of a large family of six siblings-&nbsp; which is why Shakeela decided to drop out of school at an early age to earn for her family.</p>

<p>Shakeela’s initial earnings were low and did not help to support the family. A voluptuous teenager, she got compliments about her body and her face which made her try her hand at modelling and B-grade films. Calling Silk her inspiration, Shakeela modelled her career like her and started doing soft-porn, B-grade films.</p>

<p>Her initial films did not do too well. It was early 80s and Silk already ruled the hearts of millions with her sensual roles and Shakeela was almost overlooked.</p>

<p>She made her adult debut in the movie ‘Play Girls.’ She played the role of a young sex addict and the younger sister of the character played by Silk Smitha, in the same movie. The film made people sit up and take notice of Shakeela, despite the presence of Silk.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Shakeela’s rise to stardom came when Silk’s career was dipping. While roles and film offers came in plenty for Shakeela, most did not want to pay her. She reportedly worked for free for many filmmakers in order to become a familiar face in B-grade films.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Shakeela’s got a breakthrough in her career with a soft-core film called, Kinnarathumbikal in 2000. Made in Malayalam, the film was so popular that it was dubbed in more than six languages.</p>

<p>While over the years, Shakeela has tried to do family oriented roles, it's her image as an adult film actress that has been the most popular.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While she has a huge fan following across Asia as some of her films have been dubbed in other Asian languages as well, not much is known of her personal life, which is why a biopic around the enigma of Shakeela will help in throwing light to her life, and her struggles.</p>

<p>In a career spanning over three decades, Shakeela has been linked to several actors and filmmakers but there has never been any official confirmation about her marital status.</p>

Shakeela’s initial earnings were low and did not help to support the family. A voluptuous teenager, she got compliments about her body and her face which made her try her hand at modelling and B-grade films. Calling Silk her inspiration, Shakeela modelled her career like her and started doing soft-porn, B-grade films. Her initial films did not do too well. It was early 80s and Silk already ruled the hearts of millions with her sensual roles and Shakeela was almost overlooked. She made her adult debut in the movie ‘Play Girls.’ She played the role of a young sex addict and the younger sister of the character played by Silk Smitha, in the same movie. The film made people sit up and take notice of Shakeela, despite the presence of Silk. Shakeela’s rise to stardom came when Silk’s career was dipping. While roles and film offers came in plenty for Shakeela, most did not want to pay her. She reportedly worked for free for many filmmakers in order to become a familiar face in B-grade films. Shakeela’s got a breakthrough in her career with a soft-core film called, Kinnarathumbikal in 2000. Made in Malayalam, the film was so popular that it was dubbed in more than six languages. While over the years, Shakeela has tried to do family oriented roles, it's her image as an adult film actress that has been the most popular. While she has a huge fan following across Asia as some of her films have been dubbed in other Asian languages as well, not much is known of her personal life, which is why a biopic around the enigma of Shakeela will help in throwing light to her life, and her struggles. In a career spanning over three decades, Shakeela has been linked to several actors and filmmakers but there has never been any official confirmation about her marital status.

Who is Shakeela and why is a biopic starring Richa Chadha being made on her

World Music Day: Bollywood actors who have sung songs in different languages

<p>As the world celebrates World Theatre Day on 27th March, here are 4 accomplished Bollywood actors who have been trailblazers in their own right in the film industry talking about their days in theatre and how they learnt from it. They share their first professional theatre experiences and memories associated with it. From the first appearance at the age of 5 to working with stalwarts of NSD to performing in one's village- the experiences are varied and heartwarming.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Richa Chadha&nbsp;</strong></p>

<p><strong><img alt="richa" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="8dc274c3-2f9e-4c9a-a943-dd421754ef61" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/richa%20chadha.jpg" /></strong><br />
<br />
I remember my first play was when I was in the 11th grade I was cast in a professional play with some actors from NSD repertory. It was not my first experience on stage but I guess it was the first professional one. The play was titled 'Aur Kitne Tukde' and it was a Hindi play directed by Dr Kirti Jain.&nbsp;<br />
I was cast as an extra which worked well for me because I got to observe amazing actors from the National drama School at close quarters and learn from them. Also, I had braces and it was a period play so the less attention I do to myself the better it would be. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/richa-chadha-takes-on-12-avatars-for-shakeela-calendar-189339">Also read:&nbsp;Richa Chadha takes on 12 avatars for 'Shakeela' calendar</a></p>

<p><strong>Pankaj Tripathi</strong></p>

<p><img alt="p" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="c2d365a5-6fb0-4798-99b7-6e853a4b656b" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/pankaj%20tripathi1.jpg" /><br />
My first play was 'Leela Nandlal Ki Story' by Bhishm Sahani and director was Vijay Kumar- a National School of Drama pass out. The story is about a scooter that gets lost and the protagonist goes to police station to make a complaint. I was playing both the characters of a cop and a thief. It was my first play and for the first time I performed in front of Patna audiences who don't even know me and to my pleasant surprise they liked my performances in both the characters even though I was not a great performer at that time nor was &nbsp;I trained in diction but I open heartedly performed on my impulse and the audience liked my &nbsp;performance and even misjudged me as a NSD pass out since the director was from NSD.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
The next day in a local newspaper review of the play was printed and it mentioned about my performance and that I had a great potential and a possibility of being a good actor. That one line grabbed my attention the most- that in one play the critics and the newspaper figured out my potential and possibility as an actor which was quite huge for me, increasing my interest and confidence in acting further. This was in November-December 1996.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
In fact<a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/pankaj-tripathi-bags-his-first-international-project-with-chris-hemsworth-196049"> my encounter with the theatre came much before in my village Gopalganj</a> during one of the festivals of Chatt. This play use to be organized by local drama group Raghav Saran Tiwari was my first director and it was a very amateur play. Even in that play the locals of my village liked my performance and appreciated a lot. Since then seed of acting was sown inside me, that now I have to learn acting. 5 years after that play I migrated to Patna where I did Bhism Sahani's 'Leela Nandlal Ki Story' .</p>

<p><strong>Gulshan Devaiah</strong></p>

I was 5 years old and my mother was already an actor on stage. She use to be a very fine actor and I use to travel with her wherever she performed and watch her perform. It was a Malayalam play and I did a guest appearance. My mother and I had to just walk past, look at this person who is making a Rangoli on the floor and appreciate it. I had absolutely no clue what I was doing it but I was over the moon that I was on the stage and all these people are watching me. That was my first experience of stage that I can remember of- I have a clear memory that I can still see I am wearing blue checked shirt and blue shorts with elastic and my mom wearing a chiffon saree. It was in the year 1982-83. The first time professionally I did a theatre was actually an English play called 'Kurukshetra Burning' in Bangalore in the year 2007.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
That was the first time after the play I felt I was good as an actor. I had that confidence I could say that I was good. It was a series of monologues. It was fictitious retelling of what happened after the Mahabharat war. I played Duryodhan. Each of the monologue was about 15 mins. So I performed that monologue. My father had come to see the play, he was in the audience. After I did that I had such a great feeling as everybody responded so well to my &nbsp;performance and I think I gave a lot to that performance. Thats when I decided that I can come to Mumbai and pursue my dreams. It was never my dream to be a theatre actor yet I learnt so much from theatre, theatre is my teacher and I am very grateful to theatre. That play and role gave me the confidence to pursue my career and dream in Mumbai. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/mard-ko-dard-nahi-hota-star-gulshan-devaiah-on-his-breakout-performance-and-why-he-doesnt-believe-in-sequels-206001">Also read:&nbsp;Would have regretted not doing 'Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota': Gulshan Devaiah</a></p>

I enrolled myself in a Theater group called Sutradhar and did a 4 month workshop at the end of which I had perform in a play. I went late for rehearsal one day and I was thrown out of that play after working so hard. I did backstage. Then after showing discipline and commitment, I got a part in the next play -' Kisi Aur Ka Sapna'. My first play as an actor on stage. It was probably the most exhilarating moment of my life when I went up first time on a dark stage with just a spotlight on me. But I had to work a lot in the dark first to be in that spotlight. Theatre trains you in dealing with darkness and finding yourself. I am eternally thankful to the stage and my teacher.&nbsp;</p>
