Richa Chadha, Pulkit Samrat's Fukrey 3 gets a release date

There is an ongoing debate over the attendance at Cannes Film Festival. Many like Vivek Agnihotri, and Nandita Das have expressed displeasure over red-carpet photos taking over the festival. They have reminded fans that the festival is actually about films and not fashion. Now, Richa Chadha has shared her thoughts on the debate.

Known for being part of cinema that truly creates impact, Richa has had the fortune of having two films in her career be officially selected for the world's biggest film festival, Cannes with one even winning two awards at the prestigious platform. However, in the last few years, the focus on fashion at the festival in the age of social media has increased especially when it comes to Indian cinema and personalities at the festival.

In the past few days, social media has been ablaze with multiple opinions on whether fashion should be the focal point of a film festival. Richa took to her social media and said, “There’s a lot of chatter on social media about Cannes, Fashion, film, etc. Just wanna say, don’t shit on anyone, please. People are excited to be here, I notice the ones that are thanking brands/designers/ alcohol labels that are bringing their influencers here. It’s a gear venue for marketing no? Let them be. You will notice most people say they’re on the red carpet but won’t specify the film. Well, they’re not here with a film or for a film. Having said that, should you be so lucky to get to work on a film that ends up at Cannes… It's the best feeling in the world. It’s after all a FILM FESTIVAL, no matter what anyone says. And as an artist, there’s no greater joy and contentment than a 7 min longstanding ovation (Richa said in reference to Masaan getting this honour).”

Richa and her husband, actor Ali Fazal, are at the festival to present their production venture Girls Will Be Girls. In the past, she has been to the festival for two of her films- Gangs of Wasseypur and Masaan.
Richa will next be starring in an international film Aaina with William Moseley. Indian films officially selected for this year’s Cannes are Kennedy and Agra.

The film is the second production under Pushing Buttons Studios which is helmed by Richa and Ali. The movie is directed by Shujaat Saudagar and stars Ali and Hussain Dalal in lead roles. The film was shot during lockdown in late 2020. The film was extensively shot in a house somewhere in the interior of Maharashtra. A psychological thriller, the story revolves around two characters who take refuge in an abandoned house. 'The Underbug' is the first psychological horror movie from their production house and received good response during its premiere at the Slamdance Film Fest in January. Richa says, “The movie got a great response and as creators of it we were there to witness it. It was a very proud moment for us, especially because it represented Indian cinema on such a huge global platform. This is a great time for cinema as Indian movies are getting wider reach with a global audience. The films of this genre are quite tricky since it has a very niche audience, but since it got such a positive response it kind of says it all. ” Ali says, “I have not only produced the movie but also acted in it, so I am not just physically involved with the movie but also emotionally. And seeing a response like this is quite heartwarming. The movie was made in very confusing and stressful circumstances. The movie also had the added responsibilities since it was its first screening, and the first reactions were positive, it gave us a lot of confidence.” The movie is written by Shujaat Saudagar, Abbas Dalal, Hussain Dalal and produced by Vikesh Bhutani, Shujaat Saudagar and Aman Mann. Executive Producers are Shaunak Sen, Richa Chadha, Ali Fazal, Abbas Dalal and Hussain Dalal.

B-town's much-loved couple Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal are all set to tie the knot on October 4 amid close friends and family. The celebrations began in full swing in Delhi. The two later reached Lucknow to celebrate another intimate celebration. The actual wedding ceremony will take place at a rented Mumbai bungalow, followed by a grand reception at a South Mumbai hotel. On Sunday, the two had their mehndi and sangeet ceremonies. Instead of the traditional ceremonies, the two decided to have a "phoolon Ki holi". Once the mehndi was done, the sangeet started and the two sides performed on peppy tracks for the soon-to-be-married couple. Richa's childhood friend had a surprise performance for the couple, while her brother sang a sweet song for the actress along with a Bhangra performance. To conclude the ceremony, the couple danced to two songs including the popular song 'Ambersariya'. Check out the photos below.
On Friday, the couple hosted their Delhi cocktail and reception for their family and friends from across Delhi. And, today, the 'Fukrey' actress shared a few photos of them together from the night.
In the picture, Richa looked every bit like an elegant bride in her custom-made Kresha Bajaj saree with the drape having a special meaning to the couple with Kresha and her team custom embroidering their love story onto it. Ali complemented his bride with a regal sherwani by Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla.

Many sources have confirmed to different agencies that the celebrity couple has confirmed their September dates for the wedding. “Yes, it is happening, and the couple will make an announcement soon.”A source told Indian Express. They will have two ceremonies - one in Mumbai and the other in Delhi. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Richa Chadha (@therichachadha) × Covid halt - Richa and Fazal who are dating for years now were supposed to get married in April 2020, but due to the covid-19 pandemic, the marriage was postponed. In a statement earlier, Richa said, "2020 has played spoilsport with us in many ways. The pandemic is far from done with us and the vaccine is nowhere in sight. It is only pragmatic to push or celebration to the coming year, in the interest of everyone that would attend." Last year in December, Faizal spilt some beans about their marriage plans and stated they are planning to get married in January and February 2022, but due to a brief covid wave, the wedding was postponed. World Music Day: B-town stars with exceptional singing skills

Richa Chadha is one of the few actresses who walks the talk when it comes to gender representation in the industry. She, along with director Shuchi Talati are setting up an incubation programme for women who hope to work as gaffers in the film industry. The programme, called 'Undercurrent Lab' officially was launched on Monday, and is a joint partnership between the Women in Film and Television Association, India (WIFT) and one of the largest lighting and grip equipment providers in Bollywood 'Light N Light'.

This incubation lab has been set up with the objective of introducing more female gaffers in Hindi films. In its first year, the 'Undercurrent Lab' will focus on training ten women (selected after a rigorous interview process) in lighting for cinema. It will start with a first-of-its-kind, hands-on workshop, where the trainees will learn the art from gaffers and cinematographers from the industry. After the week long crash course, the girls will be sent out on the field, to work on film sets as trainees. Two of the ten girls will be placed on the nearly all-women crew on Richa and Ali's maiden production - 'Girls will be girls' which shoots from October this year.

Richa Chadha, co-founder of 'Undercurrent lab' says, "When we set out to have an all-women team, we found that there's virtually no women who work in the lighting departments in Hindi films, So our associate, Tanya Negi came up with the idea for this workshop. We are starting this training programme for women which aims to increase the participation of women behind the camera. I hope that the initiative seeds in a much larger change in the way things work in this industry."

Director Shuchi Talati adds, " We applied for a grant at Berlinale Talent Footprints in February this year to set up this Lab, and won! The 'Undercurrent lab' will give the opportunity of making a solid career in the lighting department in the film industry, to our ten candidates who have been chosen after a careful series of interviews. We are thankful to folks at Arri, Berlinale, Light and Light and Gratitude House for coming on board to help us pro-bono."

Studio sponsored by 'Light N Light' and powered by 'Mastercard' and 'Berlinale Talents', the 'Undercurrent Lab' will happen between the 13th -18th of June this month.

Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal launch a first of its kind film lab for women

For fans of the cricketing franchise that kicked off in 2017, 'Inside Edge' is still likely to hold some interest, no ifs and ‘bats’ about it.

Batting and betting remain the series’ patent preoccupations. The characters, all 155 of them(no I wasn’t counting, just guessing) remain locked in a self-serving vault where they can only see the world as a place to mint money, and more money. Sporting ethics be damned.

The ten episodes of Season 3 have their high points. But the low points sadly exceed the high. There are many loose ends in the plot: for example, why is Richa Chadha(who gets top billing) missing in the first 5 episodes? Even after she makes a belated entry her character Zarina Mehta seems uncertain about her presence and her future. Flashbacks of her mother’s humiliation as a junior artiste are too perfunctory to project an even remotely rounded portrait. The same is true of the other principal characters. They all seem to have a back story that doesn’t quite justify let alone rationalize their slithering moves as over-ambitious go-getters.

The age-old rivalry between the stepbrothers played by Amir Bashir and Vivek Oberoi(both in brilliant form) is given some sort of centrality in the plot. Nonetheless the storytelling this time is fatally unanchored.

The characters who (over)populate the plot are either ill-formed or ill-informed or both. Sapna Pabbi as Bashir’s daughter Mantra frantically trying to legalize betting cuts a particularly sorry figure especially when pitched against a “professional” anti-establishment journalist who at one point, is shown masturbating to Mantra’s video image. I am not too sure what that is supposed to signify? That he wants to f**k her over not only on camera but in person too?

Too many characters here are either not sure of their actions or just too sketchily drawn to be convincing in their manipulative moves. Either way, the storytelling suffers grievously for the want of credible characters and finally falls fatally to the floor writhing on the ground helplessly.

Not all of it is in vain. Some characters in spite of hazy lazy writing, succeed in leaving a positive impact largely because of good performances. Amit Sial as a blunt-speaking off-spinner is a showstopper. Siddhant Gupta’s Imaad, a privileged Kashmiri batsman who is brought into the Indian cricket team from the backdoor, has three levels of discrimination(as a Muslim, Kashmiri and a figure of favouritism) to grapple with.

Imaad’s struggle appears real. As does Akshay Oberoi’s closeted gay captain of the team suffering the tireless taunts of his uncloseted partner(Ankur Rathee). And yes, Sayani Gupta is excellent as a daughter trying to live down down a cricketing scandal that killed her father. Tanuj Virwani as her brother is just not given any significant footage to chew on.

The plot sprawls indolently over ten inconsistent episodes. Some of this is really good stuff with dialogues that are barbed and inconsistent. But on the other hand, much of this feels like a spillover of the earlier seasons. The characters don’t grow. They groan dangerously close to the edge of irrelevance.

For fans of the cricketing franchise that kicked off in 2017, 'Inside Edge' is still likely to hold some interest, no ifs and ‘bats’ about it. Batting and betting remain the series’ patent preoccupations.

'Inside Edge 3' review: The series is still edgy and engrossing

Bollywood star Richa Chadha has decided to take a break from Twitter. On Tuesday, Richa shared that she`s deleting the application from her phone as she finds it "toxic".

"Deleting this app off of my phone. Takes too much, is toxic. Bye," Richa tweeted.

Richa`s tweet garnered different reactions from social media users."This platform can take a toll on mental strength, not everyone can endure it. It`s better to take a break and gather positive energy. Farewell Richa. Be blessed," a user commented.

One user suggested she mute or block the tollers instead of deleting the application."Mam, please do not delete this app. We are already running short of good people, expressive people who are not afraid to speak the truth and you`re one of them. So please do not go... instead of leaving this platform, you can simply mute or block such people," he wrote.

Richa`s tweet comes days after one of the social media users mocked her with a disgusting prediction about her to-be married life with actor Ali Fazal."Tumhara talaaq kab ho raha hain batao. Kyu ki tumhari shadi Aamir Khan ki tarah zada din nahi tikne wali (When are you getting divorced? Tell us. Because your marriage is not going to last long, just like Aamir Khan`s)," the user tweeted.

Richa was quick to give a befitting reply to the particular netizen."Sarvesh, forget about me, are you losing your mind because no one married you willingly? In your case, it must have been the girl who asked for dowry. Neither do you have looks nor intelligence and you are also poor? Your mother must have switched from LPG to an earthen stove. My regards to you, aunty. What kind of s**t-like devil you have brought into this world? This unemployed, pitiable person can dare to speak only here," Richa wrote in Hindi.

Actor Richa Chadha and filmmaker Onir have been elected as the jury for the Short Film Competition for the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2021.

The theme for this year`s short film competition is Modern Slavery and Equality. Richa is quite excited to attend the upcoming film festival as a judge.

Sharing her happiness on the same, Richa said, "I feel completely honored to have the faith of members of IFFM in having me as their jury member to judge their Short Film Competition this year along with the lovely Onir. The theme of this year`s competition is, I believe, not only relevant but of extreme importance that needs our urgent attention."

"I can`t wait to see the entries we get this time around the theme of equality and modern slavery. It`s important to celebrate all formats of entertainment and shorts are such a founding concept for budding Filmmakers and storytellers, to give voice and recognition to their style of filmmaking. Speaking from my personal experience having both acted and directed short films, it`s extremely tough to tell an entire story within a fairly short period of time," she added.

Director Onir thinks the theme of the short film competition will give filmmakers a chance to explore different sides of society which reflect humanity.

"As someone who has been associated with the festival right from the start, I am always fascinated and impressed by the depth and diversity of the short films that compere. I think that modern-day slavery runs in streams throughout our present world and the severe exploitation of people comes in many forms," he said.

"And while our Constitution says that every single person has the Right to Equality, is that really the case in reality? This year`s theme gives filmmakers a chance to explore these sides of society which reflect the kind of humanity we have in present times. I am excited to see what the filmmakers come up with," he added.

IFFM will be held both physically and virtually with the physical festival running from August 12 to August 20, while its digital edition will run from August 5 to August 30 Australia-wide.

Richa Chadha, Onir elected as jury for Indian Film Festival of Melbourne

One of Bollywood's most loved couples Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal have recently turned producers and started their own creator's lab. The couple's newly formed production company 'Pushing Buttons Studios has greenlit their first script 'Girls Will be Girls' which is written and will be directed by debutant Shuchi Talati.

'Girls Will Be Girls' is the only Indian script invited to the prestigious Berlinale Script Station 2021 - a lab that selects only 10 projects from around the world each year. It is also the only Indian project at the Jerusalem Script Lab this year where it will be presented formally at the Jerusalem Film Festival in July. Previously, Ritesh Batra’s second film, Photograph, had also participated in the same programme.

The film is set in an elite boarding school in a small Himalayan hill town in the North of India. It follows the story of sixteen-year-old Mira, whose sexy, rebellious coming-of-age is hijacked by her mother who never got to come-of-age. Mother and daughter grow up together through the course of the script and their fraught but ultimately loving relationship is the beating heart of the film.

Talking about the film, Richa Chadha tells us, “The world that Shuchi has created is relatable, often cruel but never hopeless or nihilistic. It's honest awkwardness will make you chuckle, not weep. It’s full of relatable, lived-in episodes, that one finds oddly satisfying - like popping a zit. The mother in our story routinely dodges the self- sacrificing stereotype of the typical Indian mom - she’s complicated, grey, and not a martyr. The dynamic between mother and daughter is so under-explored in Indian and world cinema that the possibilities of 'Girls Will Be Girls' presents are very exciting."

Ali Fazal tells us, “This is the first time that Richa and I are collaborating on a film as producers and the experience so far has been very rewarding. This film being our first is close to our hearts. I am also excited that our studio will enter the market with such a progressive, female-led story. We hope to be able to tell thought-provoking and universal stories with humour and love”

Shuchi and Richa first presented 'Girls Will Be Girls' as part of the NFDC’s Film Bazaar co-production market, where they found like-minded producing partners in Sanjay Gulati from Crawling Angel Films, Delhi and Claire Chassagne of Dolce Vita Film, France.

Crawling Angel Films, under the aegis of Sanjay Gulati and Pooja Chauhan, has a track record of producing groundbreaking, award-winning films from the subcontinent which have played at premiere festivals the world over including Berlinale, Rotterdam, Busan et al.

Shuchi and Richa have been longtime collaborators. They co-directed a documentary about adults living with autism and Down’s syndrome while they were students at Sophia College in Mumbai as an assignment. As Richa became an actor and Shuchi became a director, the two remained close friends and often talked about making films together. Richa tells us, “In my opinion, Shuchi is an amazing voice and I’ve been following her evolution for years, knowing that one day an incandescent film would be born from her brain. She is definitely a filmmaker to watch out for”

Both Richa and Ali are known for critically acclaimed films. While Fazal has been the lead in the Hollywood film 'Victoria and Abdul' alongside Dame Judi Dench and will be seen in Kenneth Branagh's magnum opus 'Death on the Nile' later this year. He is also a member of the Academy. Richa Chadha too has travelled with her films to Cannes and been on the jury of international film festivals at Marrakech and Nara, Japan.

Shot on a phone amid a global lockdown, sci-fi expert Arati Kadav, delivered a fine film in her newest outing. Best known for last year’s 'Cargo' that wowed everyone upon dropping on Netflix in September last year, the filmmaker seems to have upped her game this time around shooting an entire film locked at home.

The film that rides on its high concept idea stars Richa Chadha in the lead part. Floored by Kadav's script, this was Chadha’s first project that she shot during the lockdown.

In the film, Arati Kadav takes forward the idea of living in a world stricken with fear as it narrates the story of an asteroid that's about to hit earth. The film was earlier released internationally on Amazon Prime Video US and UK.

The filmmaker says, “I am thankful to Disney + Hotstar and ShortFilmWindow for showering the film with love. The film is called '55 km/sec' which is the speed at which the asteroid is making its way to earth. As we’ve all acclimated to the new normal, the short film was a fun exercise. My team and I saw it as work to cheer ourselves up. Our virtual set was bubbling with new energy. This was a memorable experience for us and I hope the audience showers us with as much love.”
