After much speculation, India's final squad for the forthcoming T20 World Cup was announced on Monday (September 12). The BCCI selection committee announced a strong 15-member squad with four players being named in the standby list. There wasn't much surprise in the final squad with pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel returned post injury concerns whereas Sanju Samson, Md Siraj, Ishan Kishan, etc. were the notable omissions.

Talking about the standby players, the likes of Mohammed Shami, Deepak Chahar, Shreyas Iyer and Ravi Bishnoi have made the cut. Shami hasn't played a single T20I post last year's World Cup, however, given how the pace battery fared at the Asia Cup, the Rohit Sharma-Rahul Dravid-led team management have included the senior pacer in the reserves. As per report, the selection committee was torn between including one of Shami or Ashwin in the final squad but Rohit-Dravid preferred the veteran off-spinner given his vast experience of bowling in Australia and the staggering success he enjoys against left-handed batters.&nbsp;

“The fact remains that they have drafted Mohammed Shami as a standby for the World Cup also goes to show that maybe they still have doubts about Bumrah and Harshal’s fitness. That’s why perhaps they want to keep Shami in the loop,” former national selector Saba Karim had told while speaking to Sportstar.

Given that both Bumrah and Harshal are returning from injuries, the team management will not be keen to include them straightaway into the playing XI. Even if they do, the two bowlers can take time to get going. Thus, Shami's inclusion is justified as his importance will be significant in such a scenario. Former India selector Saba Karim believes it is 'crunch time' for Dravid as the honeymoon period is over for him now as the head coach of the Indian team. With the T20 World Cup this year and the ODI World Cup next year, nothing less than the title will be treated as success for Dravid and his support staff.

"Well, even Rahul Dravid is aware that the honeymoon period is over, and he is trying his best to be an alchemist but so far, such metals haven't been converted into core. One would expect him to do that. This is crunch time for Rahul Dravid," Saba Karim said on Sports18.

"With the World Cup T20 coming up, next year the ODI World Cup coming up. These two big ICC events, if India can win both these championships then only Rahul Dravid will be satisfied with the kind of inputs he has given to team India," he added.

Dravid was appointed as the head coach of the Indian team after Ravi Shastri's exit last year and the expectations were high from the legend. India have enjoyed great success under him as far as bilateral series are concerned, however, the team failed to deliver in their first major ICC tournament under him.

Karim, who played 34 ODIs and one Test for India, believes Dravid would love to swap the bilateral series wins with the one-off Test that India lost against England or the Test series that India lost against South Africa, however, that is the kind of challenges he faces as the head coach of the team.

"If given an option Rahul Dravid would love to have those Test series win in South Africa and the last Test match in England. He would love to swap that with so many bilateral wins that India has got under his belt. But that's the nature of the challenges which Rahul Dravid has to face," said Karim.

"We've taken the games down to the last ball. I'm not using that as an excuse. I still think we should have gotten over the line in at least one of those games. But we would have to still learn. We haven't been perfect. Just because we lost a couple of games, it doesn't mean we are a terrible team. We have been playing good cricket over the past 8-9 months."

Ahead of the Asia Cup, Rohit had told reporters that India will continue to experiment with their bowling and batting combinations going into the T20 World Cup (from October-November in Australia).&nbsp;
