<p>Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan released a statement saying that his planned talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin could lead to the restoration of the Black Sea grain deal. <p>"I believe that by thoroughly discussing the matter with President Putin, we can ensure the continuation of this humanitarian effort," Erdogan added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This week, Russia quit a deal that was orchestrated by the United Nations and Turkey, which allowed the safe Black Sea export of Ukraine grain for the past year and repealed guarantees of secure navigation. Since then, no ships have cruised from Ukrainian ports.</p>

<p>Moscow released a statement saying that it will return to the deal only if its demands are met for easier access to its own food and fertiliser exports to world markets. As per the Western countries, Russia has had no trouble selling food, which is exempt from financial sanctions.</p>

<p>"We are aware that President Putin also has certain expectations from Western countries, and it is crucial for these countries to take action in this regard," Erdogan said.</p>

<p>Further, the Turkish president repeated his remarks saying that he hoped Putin would visit Turkey in August.</p>

<p>The diplomatic dilemma South Africa finds itself in is playing out in court. The leading opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), is trying to corner the government and force its hand to ensure that Putin is arrested and handed over to the ICC.</p>

<p>United Nations General Secretary Antonio Guterres sent a letter to Putin this week about extension of the deal. The secretary general has supported removing hurdles to Russia exporting its fertilisers. Moscow has complained that obstacles to Russia's own exports have not been removed.</p>

<p>Erdogan said he hopes "that with this letter we will ensure the extension of the grain corridor with our joint efforts and those of Russia."</p>

<h2><strong>Not one&nbsp;condition met: Putin</strong></h2>

<p>President Putin complained on Thursday that "not one" of Moscow's conditions for the deal to function had been met.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I want to emphasise that nothing was done, nothing at all. It's all one-sided," Putin said in a televised interview, adding: "We will think about what to do, we have a few more days."</p>

<p>The deal between Russia and Ukraine was brokered by the United Nations and Turkey. The deal has till now, allowed Ukraine to ship more than 32 million tonnes of grain past Russian warships stationed in the Black Sea.</p>

<p>A large part of the grain has gone to feed people in developing countries in the African continent, West Asia and elsewhere. If the deal is not extended and the exports are blocked again, food prices can soar.</p>

<h2><strong>Advanced 2 km along front, says Ukraine</strong></h2>

<p>Meanwhile, Ukraine said on Friday that its troops advanced nearly two kilometres along the southern front over the past week.</p>

<p>Mykola Urshalovych, a senior representative of the National Guard, told reporters that the force's 15th Karadag brigade and regular troops had moved towards the occupied southern city of Melitopol during the ongoing offensive.</p>

<p>Speaking to state television, Putin stressed that Russia has the option to suspend its participation in the grain deal. He mentioned that if the promises made to Russia are fulfilled, Russia would immediately rejoin the agreement.</p>

<p>"We can suspend our participation in the deal, and if everyone once again says that all the promises made to us will be fulfilled, then let them fulfill this promise. We will immediately rejoin this deal," Putin said.</p>

<p>However, a Kremlin spokesperson later clarified that a final decision on whether to exit the grain deal has not been made.</p>

<h2><strong>Black Sea grain initiative</strong></h2>

<p>The initiative was brokered by the United Nations and Turkey in July 2022, aiming to address the global food crisis exacerbated by Russia's military actions in Ukraine and the blockade of Ukrainian ports.</p>

<p>As part of the deal, the UN officials also agreed to assist Russia in exporting its food and fertiliser to foreign markets. However, Russia claims that the UN has failed to fulfill this commitment.</p>

<p>Although Russian food and fertiliser exports are not subject to Western sanctions related to Russia's war in Ukraine, Moscow asserts that restrictions on payments, logistics, and insurance have created significant barriers to shipments.</p>

<p>According to sources cited by Reuters, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has proposed to Putin that he extend the Black Sea grain export deal with Ukraine, and in exchange Russia would be given a greenlight to connect a subsidiary of its agricultural bank to the SWIFT international payment system.&nbsp;One of Moscow's key demands is the reconnection of the Russian agricultural bank, Rosselkhozbank, to the SWIFT network.</p>
