Russia-Africa Summit: African nations press Putin for Black Sea deal revival

In a high-profile summit held in Saint Petersburg, Russia, President Vladimir Putin and African leaders forged a strong alliance, vowing to advance a just and democratic multipolar world order.

This partnership also aims to combat neo-colonial practices, illegitimate sanctions, and preserve traditional moral values. Amid international scrutiny due to Russia's involvement in Ukraine, the summit showcased Africa's continued support for Russia, reported AFP.

Call for a balanced multipolar world order

President Putin lauded the summit's outcome, highlighting the shared commitment of the participating nations to establish a more balanced, just, and stable multipolar world order. With representatives from 49 countries, including 17 heads of state, the summit demonstrated the resolute desire to foster meaningful cooperation with Russia.

Resisting neo-colonialism and safeguarding heritage

Through a joint declaration, the leaders reaffirmed their determination to counter neo-colonialism and all forms of international confrontation within Africa. The declaration also echoed Russia's backing for African countries seeking compensation for the impact of colonial policies, including efforts to recover cultural artefacts looted during the colonial era.

Russia's withdrawal from Ukrainian grain deal

Of particular significance, the summit occurred in the aftermath of Russia's decision to withdraw from a critical grain deal that previously protected Ukrainian grain exports. The suspension of the deal raised global concerns over food stability and potential shortages. However, President Putin reassured African nations of Russia's continued commitment to supplying grain crops, both through commercial agreements and as humanitarian aid.

Strengthening cooperation in key sectors

The summit's success extended beyond symbolic gestures, as the leaders agreed to enhance cooperation across vital sectors. Notably, they discussed mutual aid initiatives, energy partnerships, and trade collaborations. As a tangible step toward financial independence, they also pledged to increasingly employ their national currencies for commercial transactions, reducing reliance on foreign currencies.

Putin says Russia 'carefully' examining African proposals to end Ukraine conflict

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday (July 26) claimed that Ukraine had intensified attacks on the frontline in the last few days. Reuters reported that a Ukrainian official said the country's forces are making slow but steady progress in the battlefield.

On Wednesday, three different media outlets cited unnamed US officials as saying Kyiv had launched a new phase of its ambitious counteroffensive which seeks to eject Russian troops from nearly 20% of Ukrainian land still under occupation.

Asked about these reports, Yuriy Sak, an adviser to Ukraine's defence minister, told Reuters that "there is nothing new" happening at front lines. "In the south, we are moving forward slowly but surely," he said.

As he interacted with Russian television, Putin claimed that every Ukrainian attack had been beaten back. He also said that Russian forces had inflicted significant losses on their opponents.

Defence ministries of both countries appeared to offer contradicting reports of fighting.

Russian defence ministry said that Russian forces had repelled Ukrainian attacks around the village of Klishchiivka, as per reports by Russian news agency TASS. The village is near Bakhmut.

However, Hannah Maliar, Ukraine's Deputy Defence Minister wrote on Telegram that Ukraine's troops were "gradually moving forward" near Bakhmut. She claimed that the fight was ongoing near Klischiivka, Kudriumivka and Andriivka.

She claimed that Ukrainian forces beat back Russian attacks near Kupiansk and Lyman.

The counteroffensive

Till now, Ukraine's counteroffensive has moved slowly. Ukraine has only been able to recapture few hundred square kilometres. It is just a tiny fraction of the territory which is still under Russian control.

However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed "very good results" on the battlefield in an address on Tuesday evening, promising to give details later.

Ukraine has enjoyed success in a few areas. One of these is the Mokri Yaly river in southeastern Ukraine. In this area, the Ukrainian troops have captured several settlements. The forces are now heading towards the village of Staromaiorske. The village is currently held by Russia.

Aleksandr Khodakovsky, an influential Moscow-backed separatist commander in eastern Ukraine, posted an angry message on his Telegram channel on Wednesday complaining about heavy shelling of Staromaiorske over several days followed by a Ukrainian assault which had made some gains.

Sak said there was fighting ongoing near Staromaiorske but the village was "not yet" under Ukrainian control.
The action against Girkin has come weeks after a short-lived mutiny by another outspoken critic, Yevgeny Prigozhin, the Wagner Group chief. Progozhin is still free but now has sharply curtailed his verbal attacks. Prosecutors from the Federal Security Service (FSB) security service asked Moscow's Meshchansky district court to remand Girkin in custody on a charge with a maximum sentence of five years in prison, state news agencies TASS and RIA Novosti reported. He was involved in Russian annexation of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014. He then organised pro-Russian militias who have been instrumental in wresting part of eastern Ukraine out of Kyiv's control. A Dutch court handed Girkin a life sentence in absentia in 2022 for his alleged role in shooting down of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine in 2014, with the loss of 298 passengers and crew. Girkin was seen standing almost motionless in a glass cage with arms folded, in footage from the court posted by the popular Telegram channel Shot. He is regarded by many to be untouchable due to his ties with the authorities. But in recent months, he had become more outspoken in recent months. Asked at the time if he was naive to think he could launch a political movement without the assent of the Kremlin, he said: "I hope you would not call me a naive person." Attack on Putin In one of his tirades on July 18, one of his most outspoken ones, Girkin made a post and peppered Putin with personal insults and urged him to transfer power "to someone truly capable and responsible". The post was read by over 760,000 people. I was not at home. Soon, according to the concierge, they took my husband out by his arms and in an unknown direction." She further said that friends told her Girkin had been charged with extremism. "I do not know anything about my husband's whereabouts, he has not contacted me," she said. (With inputs from agencies) You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan released a statement saying that his planned talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin could lead to the restoration of the Black Sea grain deal. He then further urged Western countries to consider Russia's demands, Turkish broadcasters reported on Friday.

"The termination of the Black Sea grain deal will have a series of consequences, ranging from the increase in global food prices to scarcity in certain regions and, potentially, leading to new waves of migration," Erdogan told reporters on a flight returning from a trip to Gulf countries and northern Cyprus.

"I believe that by thoroughly discussing the matter with President Putin, we can ensure the continuation of this humanitarian effort," Erdogan added.

This week, Russia quit a deal that was orchestrated by the United Nations and Turkey, which allowed the safe Black Sea export of Ukraine grain for the past year and repealed guarantees of secure navigation. Since then, no ships have cruised from Ukrainian ports.

Moscow released a statement saying that it will return to the deal only if its demands are met for easier access to its own food and fertiliser exports to world markets. As per the Western countries, Russia has had no trouble selling food, which is exempt from financial sanctions.

"We are aware that President Putin also has certain expectations from Western countries, and it is crucial for these countries to take action in this regard," Erdogan said.

Further, the Turkish president repeated his remarks saying that he hoped Putin would visit Turkey in August.

Russian President Vladimir Putin will not be attending the upcoming BRICS summit which is to be hosted in Johannesburg next month, the South African presidency said on Wednesday (July 19). This comes a day after court papers revealed that South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said arresting Putin, who is under an international warrant over alleged war crimes in Ukraine, would amount to a declaration of war.
The South African government said in a statement that “by mutual agreement” between the two countries, the Russian president “will not attend” the summit, adding that Moscow will be represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov instead.

This comes after the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant against the Russian president earlier this year, and South Africa, as a member state of the world court, would be obligated to arrest Putin if he were to set foot on its territory.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Wednesday that Moscow did not say that Putin’s arrest would mean “war,” adding that everyone understood – without having it explained to them – what an attempt to infringe on Putin’s rights would mean.

“No, no such formulations were uttered, no one gave anyone to understand that,” said Peskov, when asked if any warning was given by Moscow about the possibility of war if Putin were to get arrested.
