South Africa is set to host the BRICS summit next month but there's a catch. Democratic Alliance which is the country's key opposition party has filed an application in the court seeking Russian President Vladimir Putin's arrest that is if he plans to attend The Summit in Johannesburg next month. This arrest is for war crimes as per the International Criminal Court.

South Africa's Democratic Alliance files an application in court to arrest Putin

South Africa is facing a big dilemma as it braces to host the upcoming BRICS summit... If vladimir putin attends the summit in person, South Africa will be obligated to arrest him as soon as he steps foot on South African soil – as the international criminal court has found him guilty of war crimes. President Ramaphosa said that arresting Putin would be a declaration of war on Moscow. If South Africa arrests him, they will have a major fallout with Russia. If south africa does not arrest him, they will be in violation of the ICC norms. What will South Africa do?

Will South Africa arrest Putin at the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg?

Putin has agreed to extend Black Sea grain deal, says Erdogan

Putin has not yet said if Russia would renew the deal under which Moscow allowed Ukraine to ship its grain across the black sea. The deal brokered by the United Nations and Turkiye, signed by Moscow and Kyiv in July 2022, is set to expire on July 18. Crucially, the pact established a protected sea corridor allowing Ukraine’s agricultural goods to reach global markets. Here's what happens if the deal is not extended.

All eyes on Putin: Black Sea grain deal on brink of expiring

Russian president vladimir putin has threatened to use cluster bombs if Ukraine does the same. It comes days after Ukraine received a shipment of controversial cluster munitions from the united states of America.

The governor of Russia's Belgorod region said on Sunday that Ukrainian forces had shelled the Russian town of Shebekino near the Ukrainian border with Grad missiles, killing a woman riding her bike.

The future of the Black Sea grain deal looks to be in the doldrums. While Turkiye's President Erdogan had on Friday confirmed the renewal of the deal. In a fresh development now, Russia’s Putin seems to have reiterated that he sees no ground to renew the deal. He apparently said this during a phone call with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Black Sea grain deal: Putin uncertain as Erdogan confirms renewal

A major development regarding the Black Sea grain deal, Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to extend the deal the announcement was made by Tukiye. The deal was initially supposed to expire on July 17th. The Black Sea grain deal was brokered by the United Nations and Turkiye in July 2022 to help alleviate the global food crises during Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Erdogan: Putin agrees to extend the Black Sea grain deal

Russia has rejected South Africa’s plea of not sending president Vladimir Putin to next month's BRICS summit in Johannesburg. This is according to the South African deputy president's statement to the local media. Earlier, Russian officials had informed about the uncertainty of Putin’s attendance which was because of an international criminal court warrant to arrest Putin.

Kyiv claims its forces were able to seize strategic heights over the eastern city of Bakhmut, which allowed them to position their rockets and artillery within striking distance of Russian positions.

An arrest warrant for the Russian leader from the International Criminal Court has created a diplomatic quandary ahead of an August summit. South African Deputy President, Paul Mashatile says it is a "big dilemma" for them as a nation. The ICC has accused President Vladimir Putin of war crimes over his role in the abduction and deportation of Ukrainian children. US President Joe Biden claimed Vladimir Putin has already lost the fight with the neighbouring country and expressed the hope that Ukraine's counteroffensive would drive Russia to the bargaining table. "The war is already lost for Putin. Putin has a serious issue, Biden said during a press conference with Finnish President Sauli Niinisto, according to AFP. He has no chance of triumphing in the conflict in Ukraine, said Biden.

<p>Russian President Vladimir Putin has indicated at a potential withdrawal from the Ukrainian grain deal in case Moscow's demands are not met. Black Sea Grain Initiative is a deal that allows the export of Ukrainian grain via the Black Sea. In a reiteration of Russia's tough stance, Putin said that Russia will withdraw from the deal unless its demands are met before the deal's expiration on Monday.</p>

<p>Putin expressed dissatisfaction with the United Nations' handling of the issue and denied receiving any proposals from the UN&nbsp;Secretary-General.</p>

<h2><strong>Putin's statement on possible suspension</strong></h2>

<p>Speaking to state television, Putin stressed that Russia has the option to suspend its participation in the grain deal. He mentioned that if the promises made to Russia are fulfilled, Russia would immediately rejoin the agreement.</p>

<p>"We can suspend our participation in the deal, and if everyone once again says that all the promises made to us will be fulfilled, then let them fulfill this promise. We will immediately rejoin this deal," Putin said.</p>

<p>However, a Kremlin spokesperson later clarified that a final decision on whether to exit the grain deal has not been made.</p>

<h2><strong>Black Sea grain initiative</strong></h2>

<p>The initiative was brokered by the United Nations and Turkey in July 2022, aiming to address the global food crisis exacerbated by Russia's military actions in Ukraine and the blockade of Ukrainian ports.</p>

<p>As part of the deal, the UN officials also agreed to assist Russia in exporting its food and fertiliser to foreign markets. However, Russia claims that the UN has failed to fulfill this commitment.</p>

<p>Although Russian food and fertiliser exports are not subject to Western sanctions related to Russia's war in Ukraine, Moscow asserts that restrictions on payments, logistics, and insurance have created significant barriers to shipments.</p>

<h2><strong>Proposed solution and Putin's response</strong></h2>

<p>According to sources cited by Reuters, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has proposed to Putin that he extend the Black Sea grain export deal with Ukraine, and in exchange Russia would be given a greenlight to connect a subsidiary of its agricultural bank to the SWIFT international payment system.&nbsp; One of Moscow's key demands is the reconnection of the Russian agricultural bank, Rosselkhozbank, to the SWIFT network.</p>

Russian President Vladimir Putin has indicated at a potential withdrawal from the Ukrainian grain deal in case Moscow's demands are not met. Black Sea Grain Initiative is a deal that allows the export of Ukrainian grain via the Black Sea. In a reiteration of Russia's tough stance, Putin said that Russia will withdraw from the deal unless its demands are met before the deal's expiration on Monday. Putin expressed dissatisfaction with the United Nations' handling of the issue and denied receiving any proposals from the UN Secretary-General. Putin's statement on possible suspension Speaking to state television, Putin stressed that Russia has the option to suspend its participation in the grain deal. He mentioned that if the promises made to Russia are fulfilled, Russia would immediately rejoin the agreement. "We can suspend our participation in the deal, and if everyone once again says that all the promises made to us will be fulfilled, then let them fulfill this promise. We will immediately rejoin this deal," Putin said. Black Sea grain initiative The initiative was brokered by the United Nations and Turkey in July 2022, aiming to address the global food crisis exacerbated by Russia's military actions in Ukraine and the blockade of Ukrainian ports. As part of the deal, the UN officials also agreed to assist Russia in exporting its food and fertiliser to foreign markets. However, Russia claims that the UN has failed to fulfill this commitment. UN asks Putin to extend Black Sea grain deal in return for SWIFT access

Here, we bring you the news that is trending across WION's social media platforms: The upcoming BRICS Summit will be an in-person Summit despite an arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin from the international criminal court the ICC.

Putin potential arrest row: S. Africa to go ahead with in-person BRICS summit

A contingent of military vehicles diverted East on a highway in the direction of a fortified Russian Army base that holds nuclear weapons is a big development which is reported. In a shocking revelation, Ukraine's head of military intelligence said that the Wagner fighter had reached the Ukraine base.

Will Wagner's fighting skills make Putin reverse his decision?

<p>The upcoming BRICS summit will be an in-person summit despite an arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin from the International Criminal Court.&nbsp;</p>

<p>South African President Cyril Ramaphosa clarified on Sunday that next month's BRICS summit, which Vladimir Putin has been invited to, will not be a virtual summit.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The BRICS summit is going ahead and we are finalising our discussions on the format," Ramaphosa told journalists, adding that it will be&nbsp;a "physical" meeting.</p>

<p>Ramaphosa, however,&nbsp;did not say if Putin, wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) over accusations that Russia unlawfully deported Ukrainian children, would attend the BRICS summit or not.</p>

<p>"We are going to have a physical BRICS summit, all of us are committed to having a summit where we will be able to eyeball each other," he said in response to a question.</p>

<p>"We have not held a physical summit for...almost three years. It's not going to be virtual," he stressed.</p>

<p>As a member of the ICC, South Africa would be expected to arrest Putin if he sets foot in the country.</p>

<h2><strong>BRICS South Africa summit: Accusations against Putin</strong></h2>

<p>According to accusations put forth by Ukraine, more than 16,000 Ukrainian children have been deported to Russia since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war in February 2022. Ukraine has alleged that many of these children have been placed in institutions and foster homes.</p>

<p>Russia has denied these accusations. Since Russia is not a member of the ICC, the country deems the warrant "void".</p>

<p>Earlier, the South African foreign ministry had&nbsp;announced that as per its "standard" practice, it will grant immunity to the participants of the BRICS summit.</p>

<p>"These immunities do not override any warrant&nbsp;that may have been issued by any international tribunal against any attendee of the conference,"&nbsp;Clayson Monyela, spokesperson of South Africa's international relations department said.</p>

<p>South Africa's foreign minister Naledi Pandor had stated earlier that the country was mulling options.</p>

<p>"Our government is currently looking at what the legal options are with respect to this matter and I've indicated ... that it is something the president will be the best person to speak about (this) once it has reached a conclusion," said Pandor while talking to reporters on the sidelines of a BRICS foreign ministers meeting in Cape Town in June 2023.</p>

The upcoming BRICS summit will be an in-person summit despite an arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin from the International Criminal Court. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa clarified on Sunday that next month's BRICS summit, which Vladimir Putin has been invited to, will not be a virtual summit. "The BRICS summit is going ahead and we are finalising our discussions on the format," Ramaphosa told journalists, adding that it will be a "physical" meeting. Ramaphosa, however, did not say if Putin, wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) over accusations that Russia unlawfully deported Ukrainian children, would attend the BRICS summit or not. "We are going to have a physical BRICS summit, all of us are committed to having a summit where we will be able to eyeball each other," he said in response to a question. "We have not held a physical summit for...almost three years. It's not going to be virtual," he stressed. As a member of the ICC, South Africa would be expected to arrest Putin if he sets foot in the country. BRICS South Africa summit: Accusations against Putin According to accusations put forth by Ukraine, more than 16,000 Ukrainian children have been deported to Russia since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war in February 2022. Ukraine has alleged that many of these children have been placed in institutions and foster homes. Russia has denied these accusations. Since Russia is not a member of the ICC, the country deems the warrant "void". Also read | Explained: Will Putin be arrested? Here's what happens to the ICC arrest warrant Earlier, the South African foreign ministry had announced that as per its "standard" practice, it will grant immunity to the participants of the BRICS summit. "These immunities do not override any warrant that may have been issued by any international tribunal against any attendee of the conference," Clayson Monyela, spokesperson of South Africa's international relations department said. South Africa's foreign minister Naledi Pandor had stated earlier that the country was mulling options. "Our government is currently looking at what the legal options are with respect to this matter and I've indicated ... that it is something the president will be the best person to speak about (this) once it has reached a conclusion," said Pandor while talking to reporters on the sidelines of a BRICS foreign ministers meeting in Cape Town in June 2023.
