PCB hit back at ex-coach Jason Gillespie’s ‘unpaid due’ claims: ‘He abruptly left his position...’

Pakistan spinner <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/shadab-khan" rel="dofollow">Shadab Khan</a> opened up on repeated accusations of favouritism and promotion in the team for his relationship with Saqlain Mushtaq, a former cricketer, current team mentor and Shadab&rsquo;s father-in-law. The former spin great, known for holding influential positions in the PCB, including being the head coach of the side and a role at the National Cricket Academy, is often accused of favouring Shadab concerning selection matters.
After failing to get picked for the home <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy" rel="dofollow">ICC Champions Trophy 2025</a> earlier, Shadab made a stunning comeback to Pakistan&rsquo;s T20I side for the just-concluded New Zealand tour, drawing criticism. Pakistan might have hosted the recently concluded <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy" rel="dofollow">ICC Champions Trophy 2025</a> but failed to make it to the next round, with successive losses against New Zealand and India minimising their chances of reaching the final four. Everyone has been targeting Pakistan Cricket lately. After former coach Jason Gillespie slammed the current selector and head coach Aaqib Javed by <a href="https://www.wionews.com/cricket/aaqib-javed-is-a-clown-jason-gillespie-slams-pcb-coach-for-lying-after-pakistans-champions-trophy-exit-8821587" rel="dofollow">calling him a clown</a>, another ex-team coach, Mickey Arthur, joined the queue, bashing their cricket left, right and centre.
Pakistan hosted the recently concluded <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy" rel="dofollow">ICC Champions Trophy 2025</a>, their first home ICC event in 29 years. They virtually exited the first round just six days into the tournament after losing to New Zealand and India before a washout against Bangladesh later confirmed their elimination from the home event. What&rsquo;s worse? Reports of fallouts within the team and the management began doing rounds on social media, with everyone pouncing on it to bash them.

Arthur, who coached Pakistan to its maiden Champions Trophy title in 2017 when they beat India in a one-sided final, said Pakistan is its own enemy, and they continue to shoot in its foot every time. Backing and praising Gillespie as a coach, who had to cut short his ties with the PCB just six months into his job, Arthur said,&nbsp;&ldquo;I love this quote, to be brutally honest. Jason Gillespie is a wonderful coach and wonderful man. Pakistan cricket just continues to shoot itself in the foot. It is its worst enemy.&rdquo;

<h2>Arthur backs Gillespie</h2>
Following Pakistan&rsquo;s early exit from the tournament, head coach Javed said too many changes within the top management caused low morale that led to poor performances in such a high-stakes tournament.
In response, Gillespie called him a clown for bluntly lying to everyone. Gillespie accused Javed of doing everything (in his power) to remove Gary Kirsten and him from their positions (when they were the coaches) and take over that spot, which he eventually did.

In the latest round of musical chairs for the captain's seat, Pakistan have appointed Salman Ali Agha their new T20I skipper - the fourth one since January 2024. This development comes days after host Pakistan's unceremonious exit from the Champions Trophy 2025, where they failed to make it to the semis.
The new skipper, who replaced Mohammad Rizwan, has promised 'high risk cricket' in the future and has already made aware of failures associated with that. Agha made the comments at a press conference in Lahore as Pakistan gear up to travel to New Zealand for a white-ball tour of five T20Is and three ODIs.

"It's an honour for me and also a challenge," Agha said at the press conference on Wednesday (Mar 5). "We've brought a few youngsters into the team who have been playing the brand of cricket in domestic cricket that we want to play in the national side going forward.
"We have to focus on our intent and approach. We have to improve that. In modern day cricket, these things are important. This is a young team and we want to play fearless cricket. That is high-risk cricket, which is a requirement in modern cricket. There will be failures with that approach, but we have to support our players," he added.
After failures in three consecutive ICC events - ODI World Cup 2023 where they lost to Afghanistan, T20 World Cup 2024 where they lost to the USA and ongoing Champions Trophy 2025, Pakistan now turn focus on upcoming Asia Cup later this year and the T20 World Cup next year in India and Sri Lanka.
There was a lot of criticism for Pakistan after they failed to impress in home conditions with many former players calling for a complete overhaul for the cricketing set-up including giving chances to new players.

'There will be failures': New T20I skipper Salman Agha on how Pakistan will play in future

Hosts Pakistan have been knocked out of the champions trophy without a single win to their name. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will even discuss the matter in parliament.

The fall of Pakistan cricket

Pakistan coach Aaqib Javed has put the onus on 'inexperience' for his team's humiliating loss against India in Champions Trophy on Feb 23. The loss almost closed the door on the hosts chances of making it to the top four before Bangladesh's loss vs New Zealand slammed it shut.

Champions Trophy: 'Pakistan is at the bottom,' admits coach Aaqib Javed after early exit for hosts and defending champions

Former Pakistan skipper and legendary pacer Wasim Akram has called for the sacking of the top five Pakistan players following the team's Champions Trophy loss against India on Feb 23 in Dubai. Pakistan, who are the defending champions and hosts of Champions Trophy, have been knocked out of the tournament post Bangladesh's loss against New Zealand on Feb 24.
"Enough is enough. We are losing in white-ball with these players from some couple of years. The time is to take a bold step. What is the bold step?" Akram questioned after the loss against India during a TV appearance on a local channel.

"As Waqar Younis was saying, bring young players, fearless cricketers, bring them in white ball cricket. Even if you have to make 5-6 big changes, do that, lose for the next six months, support those players. Start making the 2026 T20 World Cup team from now," he added.
"PCB chairman has to call up the selection committee, call the captain, coach and our five legends and ask them what is this selection. Khushdil Shah and Salman Agha, did it look like they will get out someone, Virat Kohli types," Akram further said.
While talking about the top 5 players of the Pakistan team, Akram might be hinting at Babar Azam, Muhammad Rizwan, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf, all of whom failed to perform in the tournament.
Babar scored 64 against New Zealand in the first match but took 90 balls and was dismissed on 23 against India. As for Rizwan, the skipper managed 3 and 46 against the Kiwis and India, respectively, to go with his mediocre captaincy.
Afridi went wicketless in the first game of the tournament while he took 2/74 against India in a lost cause. Rauf, meanwhile, took 2/83 against the Kiwis but went wicketless against India.
Pakistan play their last match against Bangladesh, a dead rubber for both teams, on Feb 27.

Champions Trophy: Akram calls for sacking of THESE players after Pakistan's horror show

Pakistan Cricket is back to struggling for some reason or the other. That joy, however, was short-lived as Pakistan&rsquo;s loss the next day put them on the brink of an exit from the home tournament just four days into it.
"It was an uplifting experience to see people respond and enjoy a match not involving Pakistan," a PCB official said, as quoted by India Today. "But now, the challenge is to ensure the crowds keep on coming for the remaining matches in Pakistan because we are hosting such a big event after 29 years.&rdquo;

Pakistan Cricket’s brand value to take a hit after failed Champions Trophy run – Report

In a blow to Pakistan, batter Fakhar Zaman has been ruled out of the Champions Trophy after playing just one match&mdash;against New Zealand on Feb 19 in Karachi. The batter had suffered an injury during the first over of the tournament and was taken for scans. The development was reported by ICC in a media release on Thursday (Feb 20).
Pakistan have named Imam ul Haq as Zaman's replacement for the tournament, and the same has been approved by the ICC Event Technical Committee as well.

Imam has played 72 ODIs for Pakistan with last of it coming in October 2023 (ODI World Cup) against South Africa. He has scored &nbsp;3,138 runs those ODIs at an average of 48 with nine tons and 20 fifties. His highest in ODIs is 151.
<h2>Fakhar Zaman injury</h2>
Zaman suffered the injury on a shot by Will Young, who drove Shaheen Afridi through the covers in the very first over. Zaman, while trying to stop the ball, seemed to have hurt his left side rib area and was forced off the field two balls into the match. The boundary, however, was saved.
"Fakhar Zaman is being assessed and examined for a muscular sprain, and further updates will be provided in due course," said the PCB in a statement shortly after the batter had left the field.
Zaman returned to the field eventually but didn't bat as an opener when Pakistan started the chase. He was clearly not at his best while batting and Rizwan admitted that losing him as the opener was crucial. Fakhar scored 24 off 41 balls during his stay.
"Let's see what the result from the [scan] is. Losing Fakhar Zaman [as opener] was crucial," said skipper Rizwan after the match, which Pakistan lost by 60 runs.

Champions Trophy: From home advantage to too many pacers - SWOT analysis of Pakistan

Pakistan cricket team's vice-captain, Salman Ali Agha, has emphasised that clinching the ICC <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy">Champions Trophy</a> holds greater significance than merely defeating arch-rival India in a single match. In a recent interview on the PCB Podcast, Salman expressed his excitement about Pakistan hosting the prestigious tournament and the prospect of lifting the trophy in his hometown, Lahore.
"I am excited for the Champions Trophy as Pakistan hosting an <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/icc">ICC</a> event is special. Being from Lahore, lifting the trophy in my hometown would be a dream come true for me. The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/pakistan-cricket">Pakistan</a> team has the potential to win it," Salman stated.

Addressing the much-anticipated clash against India, scheduled for February 23 in Dubai, Salman acknowledged the unique atmosphere of the rivalry but stressed the importance of focusing on the ultimate goal&mdash;winning the tournament.
<h2>'We want to win the match against India'</h2>
"The atmosphere during the India-Pakistan match remains very different. As they say, it is the biggest game in the world. But the thing is, that is just one game; winning the Champions Trophy is more important than winning that one game," he remarked.
Salman further elaborated, "If we beat India but don't win the Champions Trophy, there's no benefit. Even if, God forbid, we lose that match but go on to win the Champions Trophy, that would be the biggest achievement for me."
While emphasising the team's broader objectives, Salman also expressed a strong desire to perform well against India. "We all want to win the India match, and we will try our best to achieve that. I will also strive to give my best performance against them," he added.
As the tournament approaches, Salman's focus underscores Pakistan's commitment to prioritising the championship title over individual match victories.

Champions Trophy: 'Defending title is more important than beating...', says Pak vice-captain Salman

Pakistan skipper Mohammad Rizwan has backed ace batter and former captain Babar Azam to break the rut in form in the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025. Babar has been struggling for form since the last one and a half years and was dismissed cheaply in the currently ongoing tri-series as well.
"Babar has scored so many runs for Pakistan that we expect him to score a hundred in each game," Rizwan said as quoted by cricket news website ESPNCricinfo. "If we don't judge him by those extreme expectations, you'll find he's still chipping in and contributing valuably for us.

"As a captain, I expect a lot more of him too because of all he has done in the past. There is obviously an additional pressure because of it and I'm sure he feels that too. But if you look at his innings in South Africa, [he is still scoring runs]. It's not as if he has clear technical deficiencies, but he is still being tested. I am confident he'll come out of it," Rizwan added.
<h2>Babar's worrying form&nbsp;</h2>
Former Pakistan skipper Babar has been in a fix ever since the 2023 Asia Cup. He has scored 901 runs in 24 innings of 25 matches at an average of 42.90. He has managed eight fifties and a hundred - his average in that period, however, dropped to 38 against a career average of 56 if the innings of 151 against Nepal is taken out of account.
In the two matches played in the ongoing tri-series against South Africa and New Zealand, Babar managed 23 and 10 runs, respectively as an opener - causing more headache for Pakistan.
The batter did score two fifties on the tour of South Africa in December 2024 and Pakistan hope that he'll get back to form in the upcoming tournament in time as they look to defend their title.

Former Pakistan captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/babar-azam" rel="dofollow">Babar Azam</a> has urged the media and his countless fans on social media to stop calling him the &lsquo;King&rsquo;. Following Hasan Ali&rsquo;s infamous interview wherein he disclosed what Babar's teammates call him inside the dressing room, the star batter requested everyone to stop referring to him as the &lsquo;King&rsquo;.
Babar was among the top batters across formats some time ago, but his performances dipped massively in the past few years. Though he had been among runs, scoring bits and pieces, his last international hundred came against Nepal in August 2023 during the Asia Cup.
During the just concluded South Africa One-Dayer in Karachi, Babar departed on 23, while against New Zealand in the tri-series opener, he scored ten while opening the innings. &nbsp;

Meanwhile, Babar has had a topsy-turvy past 15 months, wherein he failed to lead Pakistan to the 2023 ODI World Cup semis despite playing in favourable conditions. Later, the PCB removed him as the ODI captain, only for them to reappoint him as the white-ball skipper for the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Americas, where the Men in Green got knocked out in the Group Stage itself.&nbsp;

The repercussions followed as the board removed him again, appointing gloveman Rizwan as the new T20I and ODI captain. However, even that did not help Babar regain any form, as he struggled in home and away conditions across formats.

Cricket, Sports: Pakistan reached the finals of this tri-series (thanks to a thumping win), with Babar praising the batting duo that completed their respective hundreds.

Former Pakistan captain Babar Azam has urged the media and his countless fans on social media to stop calling him the ‘King’. Following Hasan Ali’s infamous interview wherein he disclosed what Babar's teammates call him inside the dressing room, the star batter requested everyone to stop referring to him as the ‘King’. Babar was among the top batters across formats some time ago, but his performances dipped massively in the past few years. Though he had been among runs, scoring bits and pieces, his last international hundred came against Nepal in August 2023 during the Asia Cup. During the just concluded South Africa One-Dayer in Karachi, Babar departed on 23, while against New Zealand in the tri-series opener, he scored ten while opening the innings. ‘Please stop calling me King, I am not there yet,’ Pakistan’s Babar Azam tells fans

The subcontinent (Sri Lanka, India and Pakistan) batters have been good players of spin in general. The skill, however, has been going down in recent times after the retirement of greats like Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, and VVS Laxman (India), Marvan Atapattu, Mahela Jayawardene, and Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka), and Younis Khan, Mohammad Yousuf, and Inzamam ul Haq (Pakistan).
The current generation of players from all three countries has become susceptible to spin, barring a few, namely Virat Kohli, Babar Azam, and Dimuth Karunaratne, who also fail at times.

With the countries preferring to make pitches spin-friendly in subcontinent, the strategy has backfired more often than not, as evident by India's recent home loss against New Zealand and Sri Lanka losing at home against Australia.
Former SL skipper Marvan Atapattu, a great player of spin, in a chat with WION shared his thoughts on why subcontinent batters, once excellent players of spin, have been failing in recent times.
"The shorter game has taken the whole concept, the whole art of the way players approached spinners. I looked up to the players like Sunil Gavaskar, Viswanath and so many others from India. Mohinder Amarnath was another one, there was an art of playing spin, not just blindly reverse-sweeping everything," Atapattu said while talking to WION on the sidelines of a recent charity match in Bengaluru.
"I am a bit old-fashioned saying that but people don't try (art) it. I still think that is the basics of playing a spinner. You rather know your basics, if you know your basics it's like a foundation for a building you have your basics right you have something to fall on. You can always run and check what these traits have done over the years. But if you have only confidence in sweeping and reverse sweeping, you are forgetting the easier the artistic manner that players in the yesteryear succeeded. We had spinners always, it was about field setting, and that's all, I think you must have a base," he added.

Exclusive: Former SL skipper Marvan Atapattu shares why subcontinent batters are failing at playing spin

The subcontinent teams, i.e., India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, have seen a shift towards spin pitches in the last couple of years. While the argument is that it is to support the home bowlers and play to the strength, the strategy has backfired more often than not.
India lost 0-3 to New Zealand in October-November last year, while Sri Lanka lost 0-2 to Australia in the recent Test series. Pakistan, on the other hand, managed to win the home series against England 2-1 (last year) with proper rank-turners in the last two Tests&mdash;their first series win in the last two years.

Former Sri Lanka skipper and batting great Marvan Atapattu, however, believes that this spin track strategy can boomerang too.
<h2>Spin tracks can boomerang on home side</h2>
"My belief is that if you come to a crunch situation, you can throw out something unplayable in terms of spin or pace, for that matter, but it hits back at you when you have your own batters struggling against spin or pace. So unless you try and play cricket on good wickets, at least in the longer version, prepare them to adapt to the situation as you go along," said Atapattu while talking to WION on the sidelines of a charity match on Saturday (Feb 8).
"Not just have a spinning wicket or seaming wicket from ball 1 of a Test match. That gives everybody a chance (good wicket); that is something I believe in. If you need to nurture batters, you need to give good wickets; if you need to nurture good bowlers, you need to give them good wickets."&nbsp;
"Let them have the wicket they want on day 4 or day 5, but you throw any bowler on a wicket that is turning square on day 1 - no bowler becomes a bowler, then you come to the wrong assumption, you take him abroad, put him on a good pitch, then he takes no wickets, and that'll be the end of his career. So, it is a very tricky situation where playing to your home strength can boomerang on you," added the former Lanka skipper.

While Shastri has backed the hosts to go deep into the tournament, expecting them to qualify for the semis, Ponting feels their pace attack, backed with several match winners in the batting line-up, can come in handy for them in the first showpiece event of the year.
Pakistan named their final 15-man squad for the eight-team tournament, with gloveman Mohammad Rizwan leading the side. Shaheen Afridi will spearhead the pace attack, with the seasoned duo of Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf also picked. While the selectors picked out-of-contract batter Fakhar Zaman in injured opener Saim Ayub's absence, Pakistan would pin hopes on star batter Babar Azam to find the Midas touch in the home tournament.

Speaking highly of Pakistan, knowing the gravity of the damage they can do on their day, Shastri said, "There&rsquo;s always pressure when you play at home in the subcontinent &ndash; whether it&rsquo;s India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, or Pakistan &ndash; the expectations are massive.
&ldquo;But, I think Pakistan are the kind of side that, with the exposure they&rsquo;ve had in the last six to eight months in white-ball cricket, have put up some really strong performances, especially in South Africa.&nbsp;They've missed Ayub at the top, and he&rsquo;s a crucial player."&nbsp;
"But Pakistan have enough depth to be dangerous, especially in home conditions. I would say they should qualify for the semi-finals, and from there, it&rsquo;s anyone&rsquo;s game.&nbsp;Pakistan are still very, very dangerous, and if they qualify, they&rsquo;ll be doubly more dangerous," Shastri said in a conversation on The ICC Review.
<h2>Ponting echoes same words</h2>
Having played and won (2006 and 2009) a few editions of the ICC Champions Trophy during his time, Ponting expressed the same feelings over what to expect out of Pakistan in this multi-team tournament.
"I agree with Ravi. Saim Ayub is a high-quality player, and his absence is a massive gap to fill. But Pakistan&rsquo;s fast bowling brigade is very, very good. Led by Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah, who&rsquo;ve been terrific in recent series, they have the pace and skill to trouble any batting line-up,&rdquo; Ponting said in a chat with The ICC Review.&nbsp;
"Babar has been a bit up and down in recent years, but if he and Rizwan can bring their A-games, that&rsquo;s when Pakistan becomes incredibly dangerous," Ponting continued.
Meanwhile, Ponting also said that the pressure of playing at home can work both ways, motivating one to cross the line in big games or putting the hosts under pressure. &nbsp;

Shastri, Ponting warn teams against discounting Pakistan in Champions Trophy

Pakistan is leaving no stone unturned to make the return of an ICC event to the country for the first time in almost 30 years a blockbuster. While 7,618 officers shall be present in Lahore, 4535 will be safeguarding proceedings in Rawalpindi.&nbsp;
Besides, around 411 Special Branch officers will provide a cushion in improving operations.

Meanwhile, UAE, chosen as the neutral venue, will host all India matches, including the marquee clash against the archrivals and the knockouts, should India qualify.&nbsp;
The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/bcci">BCCI</a> officially communicated to the ICC late last year, denying sending its team across the border due to security concerns.
Given the tense political relations between both countries, India and Pakistan have never toured each other since 2012, meeting only during the ICC events or Asia Cups.
After India denied sending its team for the eight-team tournament, the ICC proposed a hybrid model, which Pakistan rejected in the first go. However, in accepting India&rsquo;s stance of not coming over to the country due to security threats, Pakistan cut itself a deal with the apex body (the ICC) and the BCCI, making them agree to accept the same for them&mdash;meaning India and Pakistan will not travel to each other&rsquo;s country for any tournament till 2028 (the start of the next FTP); and whenever either of them would stage a multi-team tournament, the host nation would pick a neutral venue.&nbsp;

Pakistan beefs up security for Champions Trophy 2025, deploys over 10,000 personnel

South Africa eased to a 10-wicket victory over Pakistan in the second Test on Monday in Cape Town to secure a 2-0 series win despite second-innings resistance from the tourists.
Forced to follow on 421 runs behind on the first innings, Pakistan battled to 478 all out but South Africa, who qualified for the World Test Championship final last week, easily knocked off a target of 58 late on the fourth day.

David Bedingham hit 44 not out off 30 balls as South Africa sealed victory in just 7.1 overs.
Bedingham was opening in place of Ryan Rickelton, who suffered a hamstring strain in the field after scoring 259 in South Africa's first innings of 615.
Captain Shan Masood led Pakistan's fightback, scoring 145.
Masood fell to the second new ball, trapped leg before wicket by 18-year-old debutant Kwena Maphaka.
Masood's dismissal came three balls after Kagiso Rabada had Saud Shakeel caught at second slip for 23, ending a 51-run fourth-wicket stand.
Pakistan, a batter short after Saim Ayub suffered a broken ankle while fielding on the first morning, were still 92 runs in arrears after the double blow.
But Mohammad Rizwan (41) and Salman Agha (48) put on 88 for the sixth wicket and Aamer Jamal hit a quick 34 before the innings was ended.
South Africa's bowlers received virtually no assistance from a placid pitch.
Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj, who had been expected to be a major factor on a fourth day pitch, achieved minimal spin and toiled for 45 overs to take three for 137.
South Africa will go into the Test championship final against Australia at Lord's in June on the back of seven straight wins &ndash;- the second most successful sequence in their history.

South Africa beat Pakistan in second Test to complete series whitewash

Pakistan Cricket has nowhere to hide. Already struggling to retain Champions Trophy 2025 hosting rights, the PCB has a new problem midway into the South African tour.

Following weeks of uncertainties over his role in the leadership group, Test head coach Jason Gillespie has resigned from his post, the board confirmed late on Thursday night.&nbsp;

Earlier last month, ESPNcricinfo first reported that Gillespie is done in his role as Pakistan’s head coach; the PCB refuted the story soon after, claiming he will continue to hold the post till the two away Tests against the Proteas. Considering Gillespie's point of view, he felt offended and disrespected by the PCB for not consulting him before taking this call, leaving him frustrated and seeking an immediate exit.&nbsp;

<h2>Gillespie's resignation saved PCB money</h2>

Although it remains unclear if the PCB persuaded Gillespie to travel to South Africa, a source close to the information confirmed that the Pakistan Board made no contact with him over the past day. That, however, was the breaking point of a fractured relationship between the two.

Moreover, Gillespie’s resignation has spared the PCB from paying out the entirety of the remainder of his contract, as the board would have to pay had they decided to sack him.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Javed, who is the interim head coach across all formats, also holds a position in the selection panel.

Pakistan will play two Tests, first in Centurion on December 26 and second at Newlands in Cape Town on January 3 next year.

The visitors currently trail (by 0-1) in the T20I series, with the second match scheduled for Friday (Dec 13) in Centurion.

The Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) musical chair with coaches continues with Aaqib Javed being the newest entrant in the fold. The PCB, on Monday (Nov. 18), announced Javed as the new interim white-ball coach. Javed will keep the position till Champions Trophy next year.

The development comes a day after PCB refuted a report by ESPNCricinfo that Javed will be replacing Test coach Jason Gillespie as Pakistan's all-format coach. Ever since Pakistan's white-ball coach Gary Kirsten quit last month after being six months into the job, Gillespie has been doing the additional duties.

"During this tenure, Aqib will continue to serve as a senior member of the men’s National Selection Committee, and will be assigned additional responsibilities following the conclusion of the eight-team tournament," read the statement by the board.

"Meanwhile, the PCB will initiate the recruitment process for a permanent white-ball head coach, aiming to complete the appointment by the end of the ICC Champions Trophy scheduled from 19 February to 9 March," it further added.

Pakistan cricket's drama around coaches began shortly after Pakistan's exit from the ODI World Cup 2023 last year when they failed to make it to the semi-finals.

Team director Mickey Arthur and coach Grant Bradburn were let go, and Mohammad Hafeez took over on the tour of Australia, where they lost miserably.&nbsp;

Then they&nbsp;went ahead with Kirsten as white-ball coach and Gillespie in the red-ball format. Kirsten, however, decided to put down the papers in October last month without coaching the team in a single ODI amid drama around the selection committee and captains.

Gillespie, on the other hand, stayed on the job and was given the charge of white-ball teams on an interim basis.

As for Javed, his rise has been fast in Pakistan cricket in the last few months. He was the apparent mastermind behind spin pitches in the last two Tests against England at home, which Pakistan won after losing the first Test. He was also named in the selection committee last month in an overhaul that didn't go well with the coaches.

PCB announces Aaqib Javed as interim white-ball head coach

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has refuted the reports of Aaqib Javed replacing the head coach Jason Gillespie across formats. The news, reported by ESPNCricinfo, had said that selection committee convenor Javed will take over the head coach job for Pakitan across formats after Gillespie turned down the offer to oversee all the teams.

Gillespie, who was named the Test coach about six months ago, was also serving as interim white-ball coach after Gary Kirsten stood down last month.

"PCB strongly refutes the story. As announced previously, Jason Gillespie will continue to coach the Pakistan side for the two red-ball matches against South Africa," read a statement by the PCB.

The drama in Pakistan cricket continues to unfold with their musical chair rounds with the coaches taking the stage now. The drama began shortly after Pakistan's exit from the ODI World Cup 2023 last year when they failed to make it to the semi-finals.

PCB refutes rumours of Aaqib Javed replacing Jason Gillespie as Pakistan head coach across formats

Gary Kirsten stepped down as the white-ball coach of Pakistan on Monday (Oct 28). Just six months into his job, the former South African opener shocked one and all by resigning from his post. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief&nbsp;Mohsin Naqvi has now made some shocking claims that Kirsten breached his contract. Naqvi also revealed that Pakistan will have a new white-ball coach before their upcoming tour of Zimbabwe.

Naqvi told the media in a recent interaction, "He (Kirsten) broke his contract with the PCB and made some breaches. He ended the contract with us. We will have a new white ball head coach by the end of this month because Jason Gillespie has only agreed to manage the team in Australia for the white ball matches on an interim basis. He is more focused on his role as red ball head coach. The team will have a new white ball coach for the Zimbabwe tour."

The PCB, however, didn't give details behind Kirsten's sudden resignation. However, according to a PTI report, it is believed that it all happened because Kirsten wasn't involved when the PCB announced the squads for the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe and Australia and&nbsp;the new limited-overs captain (a role taken over by Mohammad Rizwan).

Further, the sources&nbsp;claimed that Kirsten had breached some clauses of his contract by not spending enough time in Pakistan and also insisted on having a full foreign coaching support staff. Thus, this wasn't well received by the PCB.

Australia have named 13-man team for upcoming T20I series against Pakistan but not named a captain. The players in the squad are, however, the ones who may be not be featuring in the upcoming five-Test Border-Gavaskar series against India which starts November 22.

Australia chief selector George Bailey said that there&nbsp;are multiple players who are candidates for the captaincy.

"I think there's a number of players with the ability to captain and some that have had some captaincy experience as well," Bailey said while revealing the squad. "We'll work through that."

Bailey also acknowledged the fact that the India series played a role in the selection and with those two series being too close, most of the players are not part of the Pakistan T20Is.

"They just cross over a little bit in terms of the preparation," Bailey said.&nbsp;

"The Test squad will be arriving in Perth and sort of finalising their Test prep around the time of that second T20. We've been really clear that we are prioritising the preparation for individuals around the Test summer and that'll be the first time that we get that group together. So rather than switching guys in and out and it becoming quite messy, it was just deemed more appropriate for a number of reasons to separate them out," he added.

Australia would be hoping for a turn-around this time in the home Test series against India after losing two back-to-back series at home and in India as well. Australia last won against India in a Test series in 2014.

Captain Ben Stokes admitted that Noman Ali and Sajid Khan were too good for his England team after the spin duo propelled Pakistan to a series victory on Saturday.

The irrepressible pair shared 39 wickets in the last two Tests to spur Pakistan's revival from an innings defeat in the first match. &nbsp;

"You've got to hold your hands up to say that those two in particular were obviously too good for our batting line-up in those last two games," Stokes said.

Noman and Sajid both came into the side following Pakistan's heavy defeat in the first Test in Multan, their inclusion proving pivotal in the hosts' 2-1 series triumph.

"Credit to Noman and Sajid, the way in which they bowled in the second Test match and in this game, you know it was very good and challenging," said Stokes.

Stokes said the series defeat was all the more disappointing with England having whitewashed Pakistan 3-0 away two years ago.

"Losing games for England hurts so it's disappointing," said Stokes, who missed the first Test in Multan with injury and failed to find form with the bat on his return.

But he said consistency had been an issue since.

"As I said, we did good things in very small amounts of times at certain points throughout the second game and this game.

"But when you don't sustain that, you know you're always going to start falling away."

'Noman and Sajid too good for us,' admits England skipper Ben Stokes post Test series defeat vs Pakistan

England medium-pacer Chris Woakes says that they are ready for result-oriented pitches in the next two Tests against Pakistan. This comes after England forced their way to a win on 'dead' Multan pitch in the first Test despite conceding 550+ runs in the first innings.

"There was talk about green surfaces," Chris Woakes said after the first Test.&nbsp;

"I suppose it did have a tinge of green on day one, but it just got better and better. The ball is firmly in their court. When it's a home series and it's only three matches, and you lose the first, you'd like to think that the next two are going to be result wickets, whether that be green or turners. We'll see," he added.

Pakistan have been heavily criticised for failing to capitalise despite being in a strong position but skipper Shan Masood said that the onus lay on bowlers.

"We take discussion of the pitch too seriously," he said. "You play a pitch for your squad and your strategy, but you can't control every aspect of the pitch… What England showed us is you can find a way: they took 20 wickets on this pitch, so you can't say it's impossible to take 20 wickets on this pitch."

After posting 556 in their first innings, Pakistan conceded 823 runs in the first innings – the fourth most in an inning in Test cricket history.

In the second innings, Pakistan batters failed to cope with the pressure and were bowled out for a paltry 220 runs thus losing the game by an innings and 47 runs.

The loss against England comes on the back of a 0-2 series whitewash against Bangladesh, also at home. The last time Pakistan won a Test at home was in the year 2021 and has been in decline ever since.&nbsp;

The second Test of the series is scheduled to start from October 15, also in Multan.

England medium-pacer Chris Woakes says that they are ready for result-oriented pitches in the next two Tests against Pakistan. This comes after England forced their way to a win on 'dead' Multan pitch in the first Test despite conceding 550+ runs in the first innings.

This comes after England forced their way to a win on 'dead' Multan pitch in the first Test despite conceding 550+ runs in the first innings. "There was talk about green surfaces," Chris Woakes said after the first Test. "You play a pitch for your squad and your strategy, but you can't control every aspect of the pitch… What England showed us is you can find a way: they took 20 wickets on this pitch, so you can't say it's impossible to take 20 wickets on this pitch." 'We'll see,' says England pacer Chris Woakes on result pitches for next two Tests vs Pak after Multan mauling

Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar says that the International Cricket Council (ICC) must be thinking about continuing the Test status of Pak Test team. The comments come after Shan Masood-led team's humiliating innings loss against England in first Test in Multan despite scoring 550+ runs in the first innings.

"Fans are saying that Pakistan should withdraw from WTC. I saw some comments. ICC must be thinking 'should we send teams to Pakistan and keep their Test status alive'. It's just disheartening. This is going to hurt Pakistan cricket, fans and the upcoming talents. I want to request the PCB to sort out this mess," said Akhtar during a discussion on local news channel PTV Sports.

The pacer also hit&nbsp;out on the steady decline of Pakistan cricket over a decade and said: "You will reap what you sow. Over the decades, I have seen the decline. The situation is disappointing. Losing is fine, but the game should be close. However, what we saw over the past two days, they completely gave up hope. This shows that we aren't good enough. England scored 800+ and Bangladesh also beat you."

The loss against England comes on the back of 0-2 series whitewash against Bangladesh, also at home. The last time Pakistan won a Test at home was in year 2021 and has been in decline ever since. Akhtar blamed weak management and captain for the current situation of the Pak cricket.

"If your management and captain are weak, there will be groupism. If the captain is selfish, there will be groupism. Same is the case if the coaches are afraid of the captain. The captain calls the shot when it comes to selection. This has been the culture since my playing days," the pacer said.

As for the first Test, England declared after scoring more than 800 runs in their first innings after Pakistan were folded for 556. The visitors then went on to win the game by an innings and 47 runs as the home side failed to cope up with the pressure.

'ICC must be thinking...,' Shoaib Akhtar on Pakistan's status as Test team after humiliating loss vs England

Pakistan Test skipper Shan Masood blamed the bowlers for their innings loss against England in first Test in Multan inside four days. The loss came despite Pakistan scoring 550+ runs in the first innings but allowing England to score 800+ in reply.

"What England showed us is you can find a way. They took 20 wickets on this pitch, so you can't say it's impossible to take 20 wickets on this pitch," Masood said after the post-match presentation.&nbsp;

"We can't find the easy way out to those 20 wickets, because then we wouldn't have scored a huge first-innings score. You have to find a way as a team, and the formula of Test cricket is you can't win a Test without taking 20 wickets. That, and first-innings runs," he added.

During the match, many broadcasters and former cricketers criticised the pitch for being benign. Masood, however, reasoned that it was the same for both the teams with same bowling combination but only England found a way to take wickets.

"It was the same pitch for both sides, and both sides were similar - three pacers and two spinners," he said. "They found a way, and we didn't execute as well. Conditions change over the course of a Test, and we have to learn to find a way.

"We take the discussion of the pitch too seriously. You plan a pitch for your squad and your strategy, but you can't control every aspect of the pitch."
