Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by a whopping margin in the second and final Test, in Colombo, to inflict a series whitewash over the hapless Islanders on Thursday (July 27). Being at their dominant best from the word go, Babar Azam &amp; Co. beat Sri Lanka by an innings and 222 runs to make it two wins in a row in the new 2023-25 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle and continue their dominance at the top in the overall standings.&nbsp;

Talking about the second and final Test, Sri Lanka opted to bat first. However, nothing clicked for them as Abrar Ahmed's 4 for 69 and Naseem Shah's 3 for 41 saw the home side get dismissed for a paltry 166. In reply, Pakistan scored at a brisk rate and rode on Abdullah Shafique's 201 and Agha Salman's 132 not out to declare after posting a mammoth 576 for 5. In the second innings, veteran spinner Noman Ali ended with 7 for 70 as the Lankans continued to struggle with the bat and were dismissed for 180 on Thursday.&nbsp;

After the Test series win, Pakistan captain Babar said at the post-match presentation,&nbsp;"Very proud to win the series, all credit to the boys and the coaching staff who've worked hard from the last 3-4 months. Everyone put in their efforts for us to win the series. We ticked all the boxes, we worked hard on batting and fielding, not a lot of it in the pitch for the pacers, but they bowled really well in both Tests. This is a team game, Saud in the first Test and Abdullah here were outstanding. We are taking it series by series and will try to perform at our best. We have a plan, we decided to play positive cricket and play up to our strengths, we want an improvement of at least 5-10%, it's not easy to win here, but I think we dominated them in both matches."

While it is early days in the ongoing WTC cycle, Pakistan have started off on a positive note and will like to maintain their good form going forward. Their litmus test will be the tour of Australia, which will commence later this year.&nbsp;

Updated WTC points table: Pakistan continue dominance at top after series whitewash over Sri Lanka

Over the last 12-13 months, fans across the world have seen England resort to an ultra-aggressive style of cricket, especially in their batting even during Test matches. This approach goes by the ‘Bazball’ moniker as it was taken up as soon as Brendon McCullum took over as the head coach. While the ongoing Ashes series has kept this cricket style in the headlines, another exciting batting approach seems to be emerging on the international stage. While India showcased their aggressive flair against West Indies, leading to the coinage of "WallBall" in honour of Rahul Dravid's team, Pakistan also decided to go for an attacking approach against Sri Lanka which former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar has branded as&nbsp;‘PakBall’.&nbsp;

<h2>What Shoaib Akhtar Said</h2>

Shoaib Akhtar seemed to be very impressed with Pakistan's performance. The former pacer wrote, "Is #PakBall becoming a bit of a thing?"

<h2>Sri Lanka vs Pakistan</h2>

During the second Test match against Sri Lanka, Pakistan demonstrated their aggressive style as they raced away to 145 runs in just 28.3 overs, maintaining a run rate of over 5 per over. This remarkable performance was driven by Abdullah Shafique and Shan Masood, both of whom smashed half-centuries.

As a result, Pakistan managed to dominate the opening day in the second Test. They first bundled out Sri Lanka for 166 runs courtesy a four-wicket haul by Abrar Ahmed. From Sri Lanka's side only Dhananjaya de Silva could manage to get past the 50-run mark. Pakistan's batters then took over and ended the day at 145-2. Pakistan currently hold a 1-0 lead in the two-match series in Colombo.

<h2>Day 2 of second Test</h2>

On the second morning, rain played spoilsport with only 10 overs possible at the SSC cricket ground. Massive downpour&nbsp;wiped out the morning session. There are concerns that the afternoon session might also suffer considerable disruption.

However, before this break, Pakistan capitalised on their advantageous position. Both Abdullah Shafique and Babar Azam looked in good touch and added 33 runs to the overnight score of 145 for 2. Sri Lanka have much catching up to do as Pakistan lead by 12 runs and are dominating this game at present.&nbsp;

After Bazball, Shoaib Akhtar coins new term for Pakistan cricket team

The drama regarding Pakistan's participation in the forthcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023 is far from over. An&nbsp;upcoming ICC meeting is set to take place in Durban, South Africa and the new chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Zaka Ashraf, is keen to push for the Babar Azam-led Men in Green to play their World Cup games at neutral venues. It is mainly because India didn't agree to travel to Pakistan for this year's Asia Cup&nbsp;to be held in August-September.

<h2>'Want neutral venues if India doesn’t want to send its team to Pakistan for Asia Cup'</h2>

“Zaka Ashraf will bring up the issue of why can’t Pakistan’s matches in the World Cup be played at neutral venues when the Indian team can’t travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup. I want our World Cup matches at neutral venues if India doesn’t want to send its team to Pakistan for Asia Cup. If they have security problems in Pakistan according to the Indian board, then we can also question the security situation in India,” said Ahsan Mazari as quoted by PTI.&nbsp;

Pakistan's participation in the 50-over showpiece event has become a huge talking point. The&nbsp;final decision&nbsp;will be taken by their&nbsp;government. However, there is no end to the drama between PCB and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). While the Indian cricket board made it clear that they won't send their team to Pakistan for this year's Asia Cup, the tournament's future was under dark clouds before a hybrid model came up, with the India games -- including their marquee clash versus Pakistan -- to be held in Sri Lanka.&nbsp;

Only four matches&nbsp;of the Asia Cup 2023 edition will take place in Pakistan, allowing Babar &amp; Co.&nbsp;to take the field in front of their home fans only once. Thus, this has not been well received by the PCB, whereas their demands with regard to the venue changes for the ODI World Cup have&nbsp;also not been entertained.

Thus, Ashraf aims to push Pakistan's ODI WC games to be played at neutral venues and not in India. As of now, the 1992 champions are&nbsp;set to play their nine league-stage games in five different venues&nbsp;in India.

Pakistan's schedule at CWC' 23

October 6: Pakistan vs Netherlands, Hyderabad
October 12: Pakistan vs Sri Lanka, Hyderabad
October 15: Pakistan vs India, Ahmedabad
October 20: Pakistan vs Australia, Bengaluru
October 23: Pakistan vs Afghanistan, Chennai
October 27: Pakistan vs South Africa, Chennai
October 31: Pakistan vs Bangladesh, Kolkata
November 4: Pakistan vs New Zealand, Bengaluru
November 12: Pakistan vs England, Kolkata

It remains to be seen if there will be any change with regard to the Asia Cup whereas Pakistan's participation in the ODI WC is also subject to clearance by their government.

PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf to push for Pakistan to play ODI WC games at neutral venues during ICC meeting

Ehsaan Mazari, minister in charge of sports in Pakistan, has said that the country's cricket team won't be travelling to India for the upcoming ICC World Cup if India doesn't travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup. Mazari said this in a conversation with news outlet The Indian Express. The statement by Mazari comes a day after Pak PM Shehbaz Sharif formed a high-profile committee to decide on the issue of Pak travelling to India for the World Cup.

“My personal opinion, since the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) comes under my ministry, is that if India demands to play their Asia Cup games at a neutral venue, we would also demand the same for our World Cup games in India,” said Mazari.

The World Cup is scheduled to be played in India from October 5 to November 19. Pakistan and India, however, are at loggerheads ever since India denied travelling to Pakistan for the upcoming Asia Cup. Mazari, in his conversation, also spoke about the mandate of the committee formed by the Pak PM and said that PM Sharif will take the final decision.

“The committee will be headed by Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and I am among the 11 ministers who are part of it. We will discuss the issue and give our recommendations to the PM, who is also the patron-in-chief of PCB. The PM will take the final decision,” said Mazari.

India, notably, has said it won't be travelling to Pakistan for the Asia Cup and since then, many developments have taken place. The latest is Pakistan reportedly agreeing to share the hosting with Sri Lanka in a hybrid model. After the first four games of the Asia Cup, the rest are expected to be played in Sri Lanka, which includes all the games of the Indian side and the final as well. India has cited security concerns to not travel to Pakistan and Mazari wasn't particularly pleased with it.

“India brings sports into politics. I don’t understand why the Indian government doesn’t want to send their cricket team here. Some time back a huge baseball contingent from India was in Islamabad to play. There was also the bridge team that had travelled to Pakistan. There were around 60-plus people, I was the chief guest of the event. They won here and left. Pakistan’s football, hockey and chess teams also travel to India,” he said.

'Pak won't travel...:' Pakistan minister puts Men In Green's participation in ODI WC under cloud of doubt

Pakistan opener Imam-ul-Haq revealed he and all-format captain Babar Azam, before 2010, used to talk about playing in India and doing something special there. As India and Pakistan gear up for the marquee clash in the upcoming World Cup 2023 on October 15 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the ranked number four batter in the world feels this current Pakistan ODI line-up is the best in the country’s recent history.

Following the World Cup schedule announcement past Tuesday in Mumbai, the buzz for the World Cup 2023, especially the high-octane India-Pakistan game, went to another level. “Playing in India, especially against India and doing something special (was something) which Babar and I were discussing before 2010,” Imam said during a chat with Pakistan’s YouTube channel Grassroots Cricket. ALSO READ: BCCI welcomes Dream11 as lead sponsor for Indian Cricket Team on three-year deal: Board President Having attained success since the 2019 World Cup, Pakistan’s ODI outfit is one to look out for during the mega event in India. Speaking on the same lines, Imam said this is the most compatible team and going by their recent record of chasing 300-plus totals in their country and South Africa, Pakistan can will the 10-team tournament for the first time since 1992. “I really believe our one-day team is the most compatible and balanced team. The combination is similar to 2019. Whenever you give opportunities to players, performances will come. We have chased 350 here (in Pakistan), we’ve scored 330 in South Africa, we won the series there.” “So yes, everybody is excited. A bit nervous as well, I won’t lie. This team can do wonders, and it would be good for our nation if we win the World Cup in India,” Imam added. 'I am a mature player now' Having opened during the previous edition in England in 2019, the left-handed batter feels he has come a long way as a batter since then. Averaging just over 51 in ODIs, Imam said he is more mature as a batter, and as a senior, he has responsibility on his shoulders too. “Yes, I really believe. If I ask myself, if I see in the mirror, Imam-ul-Haq is very different from 2019 to 2023. I’m older, much more mature,” he said. “And as a senior, now I have the responsibility. I’ve developed my shots as well. From last four years, my performances have gone up to a good level, so I want to continue that.” Meanwhile, Pakistan is set to travel to Sri Lanka for a bilateral series and will participate in Asia Cup 2023, a six-team event co-hosted by them and Sri Lanka from August 31 to September 17. Former cricketer-turned-commentators Sanjay Manjrekar and Tom Moody shared their thoughts on which Pakistani player would be the biggest bet in an IPL auction in an ideal world.

Former cricketer-turned-commentators Sanjay Manjrekar and Tom Moody shared their thoughts on which Pakistani player would be the biggest bet in an IPL auction in an ideal world. During the inaugural edition back in 2008, Pakistan players appeared in the IPL, with big names also contributing, leaving an impact. Following that season, Pakistan players didn't participate in the tournament owing to political unrest between the Indian and Pakistan governments. Fast forward 15 seasons, after the end of the recently-concluded IPL 2023, two former cricketers opined how much Pakistan cricketers would fare if they were to put in an IPL auction. Speaking on ESPNcricinfo, Moody said Pakistan’s spearhead Shaheen Afridi would be a box office as he will be the number one pick, while Manjrekar feels keeper-batter Muhammad Rizwan would pocket huge bucks too. ALSO READ: WTC Final: Usman Khawaja backs compatriot David Warner for busy English summer, says ' he is looking good' On Pakistan captain Babar Azam, both feel most teams would chase him given his credentials in the shortest format. Besides, Moody also thinks spin-bowling all-rounder Shadab Khan would be of everyone’s interest. “Shaheen Afridi, Babar Azam, Rizwan and Shadab Khan. They have got a number of terrific players, particularly in this format of the game. Shaheen would be your No.1 pick, he would be box office,” Tom Moody was quoted as saying to ESPNcricinfo. Other than them, Manjrekar thinks seamer Haris Rauf and opener Fakhar Zaman would be among the top picks too. “One of the best death bowlers, Haris Rauf,” Manjrekar said. “I think about their bowlers more than their batters. But Fakhar Zaman would be an interesting choice in certain teams.” Pakistan’s domination in T20 cricket Several Pakistan players hold top positions in their respective categories in ICC Rankings due to their consistent performance at the top level. Be it the top-order of Babar, Rizwan and Fakhar or the lower middle order, including Shadab and Shaheen. While Rizwan and Babar are 2nd and 3rd on the batter's list, respectively, Shadab is fourth best all-rounder on the list. Even considering their performance in the T20 World Cups, Pakistan reached the last four on the past two occasions, having made the finals in the 2022 edition in Australia – where they suffered a five-wicket defeat at the hands of England. Recently, Pakistan and New Zealand shared honours in their recently-concluded T20I series, with result ending 2-2 in the five-match series. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

After picking up Harry Brook’s catch at the boundary in the 13th over, Afridi injured his already-suffering knee, and things got worse when he returned to bowling during the 16th over, only to leave the field, and Pakistan’s hope of lifting the World Cup, midway.

The left-arm pacer, regarded as the future captain, in a chat with ESPNCricinfo, talked about his stretched knee injury and how coming out of it made him feel like.

Firstly, he expressed his disappointment over being at the receiving end on two straight occasions, during the 2021 edition – when Matthew Wade smashed him for three sixes to win the semis game for Australia, and then following year in Down Under, when Afridi got injured at a time when his team needed him the most.

Afridi said had he remained fit and could finish his quota of four overs, who knows, Pakistan could be the one lifting the trophy.

"Obviously, it's every player's dream to win a World Cup for his country, and I still remember 2021, how that ended. And in this tournament [2022], if I didn't get injured at such a crucial moment, maybe we could've won. Maybe if I had stayed fit and bowled. Injuries can happen at any time," Afridi told ESPNCricinfo.

Shaheen, who suffered a knee injury in July during the Sri Lanka series last year, remained away from the game for three months before rushing himself into getting fit for the T20 World Cup. Things didn’t work out there much, as following the final’s incident, he again missed the huge chunk of home season – including Test series against Pakistan and the New Zealand ODIs and T20Is.

<h2>Since PSL (this year)&nbsp;I am feeling better: Afridi</h2>

Though he returned during PSL this season, helping his team win the title for the second straight time, Afridi revealed his knee is now 100% fine and that, with time, he will also get better.

"[I was injured] two months out before the [T20] World Cup, two-three months after the [T20] World Cup also. So it will of course take time to get back. That match energy or fitness, you only get it from playing matches. Since the PSL I've been feeling better, I got better through it and then played internationals for Pakistan as well. With time I'll improve and the more I play the more I'll improve," Shaheen added.

Afridi currently played in the second leg of New Zealand’s white-ball series at home, returning with 14 wickets across T20Is and ODIs.

Given Pakistan is set to compete in two multi-team tournaments this year, including Asia Cup and the Men’s 50-over World Cup, it is important that Afridi remains fit and is managed well by the team management.

ICC ODI rankings: Australia maintain dominance at top, India one spot below arch-rivals Pakistan

Team India retained their top spot in the latest ICC T20I rankings released on Tuesday (May 02). India have been dominating the top spot in the shortest format and bolstered their position as they now lead second-ranked and current T20 champions England by eight points. Meanwhile, the likes of New Zealand, Pakistan and South Africa occupy the third, fourth and fifth spots respectively.&nbsp;

India have been very consistent in T20Is since 2020 despite not having a great run in the last two T20 World Cups. In 2021, the Virat Kohli-led Men in Blue bowed out of the Super 10 round whereas India, under Rohit Sharma, reached the semi-finals of the 2022 T20 WC but crashed out with a ten-wicket loss at the hands of eventual winners England. Since last year's T20 WC, in Australia, India have been led by Hardik Pandya as Rohit, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and few other seniors have not featured in the shortest format, to concentrate on the longer formats due to the upcoming&nbsp;WTC final, in June, and ODI World Cup later this year.

Under Hardik, India defeated the likes of New Zealand (both home and away) and Sri Lanka in the shortest format.&nbsp;

ICC T20I rankings: India maintain dominance at the top, arch-rivals Pakistan slip to fourth spot

The Asia Cup 2023 edition is only months away but the mystery surrounding the host&nbsp;for the continental tournament continues. Pakistan have been named as the host for the tournament but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made it clear, last year, that the Indian team won't travel to their neighbouring Asian country due to the strained political relations between both nations.&nbsp;

Since then, a lot has been said and written about the Asia Cup 2023 edition. Pakistan cricket board (PCB) responded by saying that it won't travel to India for the 2023 ODI World Cup, to take place soon after the Asia Cup. Later on, it was revealed that the PCB offered a hybrid model where India will play their games at another&nbsp;venue while Pakistan will host the remaining games.

But this could also cost Pakistan the hosting rights. As per Cricket Pakistan, Pakistan will lose the hosting rights even if a hybrid model comes into place. Thus, the PCB is prepared to see the cancellation of this year's event. The report in&nbsp;cricketpakistan.com has further revealed that Team India might play a five-nation tournament in the vacant window following Asia Cup's cancellation.

Coming to Pakistan's threat to boycott this year's ODI WC, it is highly unlikely that they won't participate. The Men in Green travelled to India for the 2016 T20 World Cup. They, however, might play their games in one or two venues only.&nbsp;

The Asia Cup was held last year, in the T20 format, in the UAE with Sri Lanka having the hosting rights. The Islanders won the tournament, beating Pakistan by 23 runs in the final.

India to feature in five-nation tournament with Asia Cup 2023 unlikely before ODI World Cup: Report

Pakistan Cricket Board's newest recruit Mickey Arthur, who rejoined them, this time as the Director of Cricket, has showered praises on the Men's team captain Babar Azam, calling him the best batter in the world right now. Arthur also said the Pakistan team has it in them to win the world cup&nbsp;and become number one across all formats.

On Thursday, the PCB announced the much-awaited re-appointment of Arthur on a one-year contract, who will work remotely with the team owing to his prior commitment with Derbyshire County Club.&nbsp;

As reported by PTI, Arthur talked about Babar Azam and what impresses him the most about the Pakistan all-format captain. Arthur said speed of Babar's hands caught his attention first, and that, Arthur had never seen a talent like that in world cricket.

Sharing his thoughts on returning to Pakistan Cricket, Arthur said it's his privilege to come back here, and this time, the aim will be to win the 2023 World Cup and help the Pakistan team stand tall across all formats. “It’s a privilege for me; in fact, to come back and help, hopefully, win a World Cup, get us to number one in the world in all formats of the game because we certainly have the talent, certainly the players.” Currently, the Pakistan team is playing the home white-ball series against New Zealand.

Babar Azam is the number one batter in world right now, going to be a legend of the game, says Mickey Arthur

Pakistan's skipper Babar Azam created history with his latest hundred in the second T20I against New Zealand. Azam scored 101 not out of 58 balls as Pakistan managed 192/4 in their 20 overs.&nbsp;

The latest hundred by Azam was his third in T20Is - the most by a captain in T20Is, pipping India's Rohit Sharma who has two hundreds in T20Is as skipper. Pakistan skipper Babar Azar surpasses India's Rohit Sharma with hundred in 2nd T20I against New Zealand

A lot has been said and written about the Asia Cup 2023. While Pakistan are the originals host for the showpiece event, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had announced last year that Team India won't travel to their neighbouring country (due to both nations' strained political relation). Since then, a lot of speculations have been raised with regard to where the continental tournament will be held, which is set to take place in September ahead of this year's ODI World Cup in India.

Firstly, it was said that the tournament will move to UAE with Pakistan to remain as the hosts. Last year, Sri Lanka remained the host but the competition was held in the UAE. However, multiple reports suggested that a hybrid model will be followed for Asia Cup, with India to play their encounters elsewhere. Now, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Najam Sethi has shared his firm stance on Asia Cup hosting rights.&nbsp;

"We have made it very clear that unless the Asia Cup is held on a hybrid model like we have proposed, that is India playing its matches at an offshore venue and Pakistan hosting the remaining games at home, we will not accept any other schedule and neither play," he said as quoted by India Today.

"We will not lose our hosting rights. Security is no excuse for them now and we have told them if their government is not giving them clearance to play in Pakistan, show us some written proof of this," Sethi said.

It will be interesting to see where the upcoming edition of the Asia Cup gets held as the tournament is just a few months away from commencement.&nbsp;

Former South Africa seamer Morne Morkel is appointed as the new bowling coach of the Pakistan Men’s Cricket team, while the board has also picked former Proteas keeper-batter Andrew Puttick as the new batting coach. In addition, former Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur will return to the PCB setup as the consultant while he continues as head coach of Derbyshire.

Arthur, in the first of-its-kind setup, was chosen as the remote team director, while he was accounted for assigning a coaching panel consisting of all overseas coaches. While ex-Pakistan fielding coach Grant Bradburn will be the head coach, physiotherapist Cliffe Deacon and strength and conditioning coach Drikus Saaiman will continue with their jobs.

Lanky Morkel is currently involved with Lucknow Super Giants as its bowling coach and will join the Pakistan team following his IPL commitment. Earlier, Morkel was part of the Namibian coaching staff during the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia and then coached Durban's Super Giants in SA20.

The 42-year-old Puttick will join the Pakistan squad in April. Before this, Puttick was a South African women’s team batting coach in the T20 World Cup. Having made just one appearance for the Proteas in 2005, Puttick has remained closely associated with South Africa as a batting consultant.

As per reports, Arthur will work remotely in a special arrangement with the PCB. He will travel to Lahore next month and then will return to join the Pakistan squad just ahead of the World Cup in October. Besides, he will not travel with the team for their tour to Sri Lanka or any bilateral series, not even for the home Asia Cup.

Against Afghanistan during the recently-concluded three-match T20Is that Pakistan lost 1-2, interim coaches were assigned as the board decided against renewing Saqlin Mushtaq and Shaun Tait’s contracts. Next, Pakistan will host New Zealand for five T20Is and as many ODIs, starting April 14th.

Pakistan locked horns with Afghanistan in the just-concluded three-match T20I series in Sharjah. A second-stringed Pakistan side, under Shadab Khan, lost the series 2-1 on Monday (March 27). The Men in Green were on the verge of being whitewashed after losing the first two matches but came back strongly in the inconsequential third game to prevent a 0-3 scoreline.&nbsp;

During the series, there was a lot of focus on Azam Khan, son of former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Moin Khan. Azam, who had an impressive run in Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2023, failed to impress and returned with scores of 0, and 1. After his dismissal in the second T20I, which Pakistan lost by seven wickets after losing the series opener by six wickets, Azam was trolled by a Pakistan fan. The fan was caught on camera gesturing at Azam's fitness standards and eating habits. The video of the incident has gone viral in no time.&nbsp;

In the post match press conference after the second T20I defeat, stand-in captain Shadab Khan said, "It was a good score. We were struggling again. If you look at stats, if you lose 3 wickets in powerplay, you lose 70 percent of the games. I think there's nervousness - they're playing for the first time for Pakistan (the new batters). We have to back them. Sometimes you don't perform but attitude matters. That's more important for me. They have talent. They will be great cricketers. Will play for pride tomorrow."

Shadab-led Pakistan, however, came back strongly and played well when they met Afghanistan in the third T20I on Monday. Playing for pride, the former T20I champions were asked to bat first and managed a competitive score; 182 for 7. In reply, Rashid Khan &amp; Co. only managed 116 all-out in 18.4 overs to lose by 66 runs. Azam, on the other hand, was not part of the playing XI for the final T20I.

Pakistan and Peshawar Zalmi captain Babar Azam has been subject to criticism for some time now. Recently questioned for playing selfishly during his maiden hundred-knock in the PSL by cricketer-turned-commentator Simon Doull, Babar decided to answer his critics. While speaking with Pakistan Cricket in a recent interaction, Babar said everyone has opinions and wants changes to happen overnight, which cannot just happen.

"Criticism is always there, whether you perform or not. Everyone has their own opinion. I think when you find any fault in your batting, it takes some time. People want things to get right immediately, which is not possible," Babar told Cricket Pakistan.

Commenting further on how things take time to improve and cannot happen at the drop of the hat, Babar said he believes in practising, adding that when he is out of touch, he trains double than usual.&nbsp;

"I think you can only perform in the match when you practice hard. I play 500-600 balls daily during my practice. Even double balls when I am out of form. I believe practice is so important for anyone who wants to perform on the ground," Babar added.

Meanwhile, having faced enough wrath from each corner over several things, Babar said even his father is not satisfied with his performance mostly. The 28-year-old added because his father wants him to stay grounded and keep performing well every time, he keeps advising him to improve. But then sometimes he does praise Babar, something he likes for a change.

"My father rarely gets satisfied with my performance because he doesn't want me to take things for granted. He always tries to give me some advice so that I can get better and better. Now, he sometimes praises me. But I think it's good for you that your elders keep guiding you and want more from you," Peshawar Zalmi captain said.

Speaking of performing well, Babar is currently the second-highest run-scorer with 416 runs in nine matches at a strike rate of 146.48. While he missed his side’s last league match against Islamabad United, he would return to the XI to face them in the first eliminator on Thursday, March 16th at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

Having retired from international cricket in 2021, the 42-year-old Hafeez was surprisingly picked by Quetta Gladiators in PSL 2023 as an injury replacement after he remained unsold in the draft earlier. The T20 World Cup-winner with Pakistan shinned in Quetta’s record-breaking win over Peshawar Zalmi on Wednesday night in Rawalpindi.

For Quetta to remain in the race for the PSL 2023 knockouts, it was necessary that they win over Zalmi; thanks to an unbelievable hundred from Jason Roy and a handy cameo in the end by Hafeez, they were successful in their attempt.

Batting first, Peshawar registered a mammoth 240 for two inside 20 overs as their captain Babar Azam scored his maiden PSL hundred. England’s Jason Roy then led Quetta’s run-chase and registered the highest individual score (145* off 65 balls) in the PSL history.&nbsp;Hafeez also chipped in with an exceptional unbeaten 41 off 18 balls, including six fours and two sixes. Though with the ball in hand, the off-spinner Hafeez conceded 20 runs in two overs without picking up a wicket.

Hafeez, who made his international debut back in 2003, is Pakistan’s one of the most-prolific all-rounders. While in 55 Tests, he scored 3652 runs at an average of 37.65, Hafeez amassed 6614 runs in the 218 One-Dayers played, averaging at nearly 33. Even in the shortest in which he excelled the most, the right-handed Hafeez has 2514 runs and 61 wickets to his name.

Babar Azam is among the top-five batters across formats in ICC rankings. He won the ICC Player of the Year award last month. While he continues to make rapid strides as a batter, questions have been raised on his captaincy in the recent past.&nbsp;

In the recent past, Pakistan have lost home Tests versus Australia, England and somehow managed a drawn series versus New Zealand. They also lost T20Is to the Aussies and Moeen Ali-led England in their own backyard last year, failed to win the Asia Cup 2022 final and 2022 T20 World Cup summit clash under Babar. Even in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2023 edition, Babar's Peshawar Zalmi are at the fourth spot, with three wins and equal number of losses from six games.

Thus, many former cricketers and experts of the game have raised fingers on Babar's captaincy. Nonetheless, he continues to enjoy full support of his teammates. After Md Rizwan, Shaheen Afridi, Shadab Khan, Shan Masood, Haris Rauf has now joined the bandwagon and praised Babar's leadership skills.

“I strongly believe that the improvement in my performance is all because of Babar Azam. We played really good and exciting cricket in the last two years. In this period, we emerged as a good unit, especially in white-ball cricket, and the credit goes to our skipper Babar Azam, who trusted the abilities of players, which ultimately gave us the confidence,” Rauf told&nbsp;Dawn.

Rauf was part of Pakistan's Asia Cup and T20 WC campaigns. He has represented the Asian giants in one Tests, 18 ODIs and 57 T20Is. He is currently part of the Shaheen Afridi-led Lahore Qalandars in PSL 2023.

Earlier, Masood also made a big claim in support of Babar. While speaking with a local TV channel, as reported by Cricket Pakistan, the left-handed batter said, "Hum sab Babar Azam ke behind hai. Jis tarike se koi bhi aapka captain hota hai, jab Saifi bhai thai, tb bhi hum jaan dene ko taiyaar thai, ab jab Babar Azam hai, tb bhi hum jaan dene ko taiyaar hai. Leader first. Aur hum sabka common goal Pakistan hai."

Bahut saari hum khabre padhte hai, cheeje dekhte hai jo team ko idhar se udhar karne ki koshish karti hai, lekin personally, kisi ko kisi k saath koi vo nahi hai. Hum Pakistan k liye khelne aaye hai, ye bahut badi privilige hai. 'We are ready to give our lives for Babar Azam': Pak batter comes in support of under-fire national captain

The 2023 Asia Cup has been much talked about. While Pakistan will host the 50-over continental tournament, the venue isn't finalised as India have made it clear that they won't travel to their neighbouring country due to the strained political relations between both sides. A final decision on the venue is likely to be out by March but Pakistan will remain the host for sure.

Ever since the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah revealed, in late 2022, that Team India won't get government clearance to go to Pakistan for the tournament, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have not taken things lightly. The then PCB chief Ramiz Raja had revealed that Pakistan will boycott the 2023 ODI World Cup, in India, if the Men in Blue pull out of Asia Cup. Now, Kamran Akmal -- the veteran keeper-batter -- has joined the bandwagon and backed Ramiz's claims.&nbsp;

Speaking on the Nadir Ali podcast, Kamran said that Pakistan also have respect and they shouldn't travel to their neighbouring country if India doesn't turn up for the Asia Cup.

"If India do not agree to come for the Asia Cup, we should not go to India to play the 2023 World Cup there. Hamaari bhi respect hai (We are also well respected). This is between two governments; until they are on the same page, the teams won't go with each other. We have to see how long it goes," Kamran said.

India and Pakistan's senior men's team had last met during the 2022 T20 World Cup, in Australia, where Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. beat Babar Azam-led Men in Green by five wickets.

Safaraz Ahmed saw a huge downfall in his international career post the 2019 ODI World Cup, in England and Wales. After Pakistan failed to qualify for the semi-finals, they were whitewashed by a second-stringed Sri Lanka in a three-match T20I series at home later in the year; resulting in his sacking as the captain. Soon, he was left out of the squad across formats. He made a solid return to the Test line-up in late 2022 during New Zealand's two-match series versus hosts Pakistan. He ended with 86, 53, 78, 118 to return as the Player-of-the-Series.&nbsp;

At present, Sarfaraz is involved in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2023, where he is leading the Quetta Gladiators. Recently, the wicketkeeper-batter made an appearance on a TV show in Pakistan. During the show, the host asked him to choose who is the better captain between Babar Azam,&nbsp;Azhar Ali&nbsp;and him. To this, the right-hander shared an epic response. Here's what he said:

"Sarfaraz Ahmed," while later adding, "Kisi ko naaraz karne se behtar hai ki apna he naam le lo (It’s better to take your own name rather than making anybody else angry)." Here's the video:

Shoaib Akhtar had a stellar run in international cricket. The pacer ended with as many as 444 scalps in a career than spanned for 14 years. He enjoyed a fierce rivalry with some big batters of his time, such as Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Brian Lara, Rahul Dravid, Gary Kirsten, etc., and gave many other batters sleepless nights with his raw pace and bounce. Akhtar's career was, however, marred with several controversies and injury concerns.

Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar doesn't shy away from expressing his views on various aspects of the modern-day game. Akhtar has often made the headlines with his sensational claims or criticism of the Pakistan cricket team. Recently, the 47-year-old ex-speedster lashed out at the current crop of Pakistan players and targetted skipper Babar Azam whom he feels isn't a big brand yet in the country for his poor communication skills.

In an interview with a local Pakistani channel, Akhtar pointed out the poor communication skills of Pakistani players, including Babar, and mentioned, "Abhi aap dekh le, koi character nahi team mein. Naa koi baat karne ka tarika. (You can see there's no character in the team, nor they know how to talk). How awkward it looks when they come to the presentation. This isn't the first time that Babar has faced criticism for his&nbsp;communication skills. Even in 2020, he addressed the issue during a press conference by saying that he is working on improving his communication skills. Back then, he stated, "I’m a cricketer; my job is to play cricket. I am not a 'gora'&nbsp;who knows English thoroughly. Yes, I am working on it, but you learn these things over a period of time; you can’t just suddenly learn it."

Kitna mushkil hai English seekhna aur baat krna? (How difficult is it to learn and speak English?). Cricket is one job, and handling media is another. If you can’t speak, I am sorry, but you won’t be able to express yourself on TV." Former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar says Babar Azam cannot speak and hence he is not the biggest brand in Pakistan. Modern-day cricketers in Pakistan cannot speak on media, TV or in post-match presentations. Do you agree with this statement? pic.twitter.com/xMrNwYQe1X — Farid Khan (@_FaridKhan) February 21, 2023 × Also Read: 'What these guys know is...': Sunil Gavaskar slams ex-Pak players for constant criticism of Indians Akhtar added, "I want to openly say that Babar Azam should be the biggest brand in Pakistan, but why hasn't he become the biggest brand in Pakistan? Because he can’t speak. Is there any other cricketer who can speak well? Why do only I, Shahid Afridi, and Wasim Akram get all the advertisements? The reason is that we take it as a job." This isn't the first time that Babar has faced criticism for his communication skills. Even in 2020, he addressed the issue during a press conference by saying that he is working on improving his communication skills. Back then, he stated, "I’m a cricketer; my job is to play cricket. I am not a 'gora' who knows English thoroughly. Yes, I am working on it, but you learn these things over a period of time; you can’t just suddenly learn it." At present, Babar is leading the Peshawar Zalmi in PSL 2023. While he is a superstar in modern-day cricket, he will be eager to work on his personality to shun his critics across the globe.

Babar Azam hasn't become Pakistan's biggest brand as he can’t speak English: Shoaib Akhtar

India and Pakistan have one of the most fierce rivalries in cricketing fraternity. Over the years, the two teams meet only in multi-nation or ICC events due to strained political relations between both nations. While the current crop of players from both sides remain co-ordial with each other on and off the field, there has been a constant flurry of former Pakistan cricketers taking a dig at Indian players for their performances.

Recently, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar has now opened up on the entire matter and has lashed out&nbsp;at this habit of ex-Pakistan&nbsp;players for their constant criticism of Indian cricketers.&nbsp;

'What these guys know is that they will immediately get a response...'

Gavaskar wrote in his coloum for Mid-Day, "What the following for the game also does is to make the media, especially the online media, look to get more eyeballs or followers and so anything to do with cricket and especially about Indian players gets into the public domain even if it actually belittles them. That's the sad part especially when the views of those across the border get online in the Indian media. It's almost a daily thing to hear some former player from across the border pulling down an Indian player and saying the Pakistani player is better. What these guys know is that they will immediately get a response from the Indian fans who will defend their favourite player and in doing so, increasing the followers of the former player from across the border."

The former Indian opener added, "It's a trick that is used by them knowing that to increase their followers all that they have to do is say uncomplimentary stuff about Indian players, past or present. Have you ever heard or read any Indian player past or present saying anything about the players from across the border? Frankly, nobody cares, so no Indian that I know has said anything about the players from across the border. It's simply not our style. If our online media ignores what is said across the border then it will automatically stop, but our media will publish it even if it is pulling a fellow Indian down."

At present, the senior Indian men's team is involved in a four-match Test series versus Australia at home. On the other hand, the Pakistani players are playing PSL 2023. The last time the senior men's teams locked horns was in 2022 T20 World Cup at the MCG, Melbourne where Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. defeated Babar Azam-led Men in Green by five wickets.

Former T20 World Cup-winner with Pakistan Mohammad Hafeez has earned a surprise call-up to the Quetta Gladiators squad in PSL 2023 as a replacement for Ahsan Ali, who is out due to a knee injury. After remaining undrafted this season, the former all-rounder will be joining&nbsp;the Quetta squad that is looking to end its trophy&nbsp;drought since winning one in 2019. Hafeez was, however, the player of the match in the finals of PSL last year, contributing with both bat and ball. Playing for Lahore Qalandars against Multan Sultans at the Gaddafi Stadium, Hafeez first scored 69 off 46 balls and then picked two wickets for just 23 runs in his quota of four overs, helping his team lift the title.

Quetta, who from the past three seasons haven’t even made it to the playoffs, will be facing Multan Sultans in their first match of PSL 2023 on Wednesday in Multan. However, there is no clarity on the availability of Hafeez for selection for that game.

Following his retirement from all forms of the game in January last year – ending a glorious 19-year association with Pakistan cricket as a player, Hafeez was seen playing in the Dhaka Premier League and even in the Kashmir Premier League. Though outside of that he has working as a cricket analyst on Pakistan television for some time now.

Hafeez was one of Pakistan’s finest match-winners over the years. Having played over 200 ODIs and 100 T20Is, the right-hander has amassed 6614 and 2514 runs in the two formats respectively. In 55 Tests he played, Hafeez has 3652 runs to his name with the highest of 224. In bowling, he picked 53 wickets in Tests, 139 in One-Dayers and 61 in T20Is.

Virat Kohli was going through a torrid run in 2022. With his numbers going down across formats, there were concerns being raised with regard to his spot in the national side. In July 2022, when India were involved in a three-match ODI series versus hosts England, Pakistan skipper Babar Azam -- regarded as Kohli's rival -- made heads turn with his heartfelt gesture for an underfire Kohli. Babar took to his official Twitter handle to share a message for out-of-form Kohli amid his constant criticism.&nbsp;

On July 14, Babar took to his official account and shared an image with Kohli with caption, "This too shall pass. Stay strong." Kohli also replied to Babar and wrote, "Thank you. Keep shining and rising. Wish you all the best."

The two met in the 2022 Asia Cup, where India and Pakistan met twice (winning and losing one each), and also during the T20 World Cup in Australia (where Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. defeated Babar-led Men in Green).&nbsp;

Recently, Babar opened up on his heartfelt tweet for Kohli during&nbsp;an interview with ICC Digital Insider. He revealed, "As a sportsperson, anyone can go through such a time. At that time I thought maybe if I tweet it might give someone help and confidence. See, as a player, you try to back every sportsman in a difficult time." Babar added, "It is in difficult times that you get to know what you are thinking about others. At that time, I thought I should have done that, and maybe something positive would come out of it. Something that can be a plus point."

Kohli moved past his poor run of form immediately after Babar's tweet. He ended the Asia Cup as the second-highest run-getter (276 runs), was in superb form in T20 World Cup (with three half-centuries) and has scored three international tons since then (two in ODIs, one in T20Is). He will be eager to break his Test-century drought during the ongoing home series versus Australia. Babar, on the other hand, is leading Peshawar Zalmi in PSL 2023.

Thought something positive would come out: Babar Azam on his 'this too shall pass' tweet for Virat Kohli

India dominated proceedings in the first Test versus Australia, in Nagpur, to go 1-0 up in the ongoing edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Losing the toss, India rode on comeback man Ravindra Jadeja's 5 for 47 to rattle the Pat Cummins-led Aussies for 177 and piled up 400 courtesy of skipper Rohit Sharma's 120, Jadeja's 70 and Axar Patel's 84 before dismissing the visitors for 91 in their second essay to win by an innings and 132 runs. Jadeja accounted for two more wickets in Australia's second innings and, thus, returned as the Player-of-The-Match.&nbsp;

After India's thumping win, former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria has lavished huge praise on Jadeja and feels 'world cricket hasn't seen an all-rounder like him'. Speaking on his Youtube channel, he said, "World cricket hasn't seen an all-rounder like Ravindra Jadeja. He dominates every department, be it batting, bowling or fielding. He is one such player that the captain will want to have in the playing XI every single time. He constantly creates pressure on the opposition."

"He didn't play cricket for around six months, but still kept himself in good shape and worked on his fitness. It is never easy to make a return, that too against a team like Australia. It was outstanding that he was able to come up with such a dominating performance in his comeback match against a big team," added Kaneria.

To back Kaneria's claims, Jadeja has been in top form across formats. He has had several injury concerns in the recent past but his performances haven't gone down by any means. In his last Test, during India's one-off match versus England in Edgbaston, he had scored a splendid 104 before resuming from where he left during his comeback match in Nagpur.&nbsp;

At the post-match presentation of the Nagpur Test, Jadeja said, "Feeling amazing. When you come back after five months and give your 100 percent, scoring runs and taking wickets.. feels amazing. Was working hard at the NCA. Would like to thank the NCA staff, physios. They have been working hard with me, even on Sundays. Was looking to bowl in good areas. Ball was spinning, going straight, keeping low. Kept telling myself to bowl at the stumps - if they make mistake, I have a chance. I look to keep things simple. Try not to change things with my batting. It's a crucial number - 5, 6, 7."

IND vs AUS | 'World cricket hasn't seen....': Ex-Pakistan spinner reserves high praise for Ravindra Jadeja

Ace Pakistan seamer Shaheen Afridi revealed shocking thoughts that crossed his mind while he was undergoing rehab for his injured knee lately. The left-arm fast bowler didn’t have the best of 2022 as he remained on the sidelines for most of the time even missing the second half of the home season against England and New Zealand. As his road to recovery wasn’t pleasing or smooth by any means, Afridi reveals he literally thought about letting this go and step aside as his muscle issue wasn’t recovering despite rigorous training and rehabilitation.

Speaking to AP, Afridi who is now deemed fit and will be seen wearing the captain’s hat for Lahore Qalandars in the upcoming season of the PSL 8, admitted that thoughts of giving up on everything kept coming in while he was waiting in the wings for his return.

“There were times when I wanted to give up. I was working on only one muscle and it was not improving. Often during the rehabilitation sessions, I used to say to myself ‘this is enough, I cannot do this anymore,” Afridi told AP.

Afridi started to feel the pain in his knees during Pakistan’s tour of Sri Lanka in July last year. He then got his treatment done, and for precaution sake also&nbsp;he was out of cricket for nearly three and a half months before being brought back, rather prematurely, for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia in October.

During his side’s opening game against India, Afridi looked rusty but with time he gained momentum and even shined with the ball during the later stages of the tournament. As Pakistan qualified for the finals against England, the big blow came during then, when Afridi sustained injury to his already torn knee while fielding. That saw him leaving the field immediately, and considering the match situation then, Afridi’s absence was the final nail in coffin for Pakistan – who lost the final by five wickets.

The curse didn’t end there; for Afridi playing competitive cricket looked like a distant dream as he was ruled out for indefinite time – meaning he missed the all-important Test series against England at home and the following series against New Zealand also.

While he would be seen playing in PSL 8 now, given it is a World Cup year, the PCB must be chalking out plans on how to manage his workload.

Pakistan cricketer Mohammed Rizwan has revealed that he had asked the team management to be dropped from the two-match Test series against New Zealand last month. The wicketkeeper batter said he did not deserve a place in the playing XI after a string of disappointing performances. “You can ask the head coach Saqlain Mushtaq what I told him after the end of the England Test series," Rizwan was quoted as saying by Cricket Pakistan. “I went to the coach and captain myself and told them that you can drop me because I haven’t performed. Two players are witnesses to this conversation," he added. Rizwan admitted that he was happy to see his replacement Sarfaraz perform well and contribute to the team's cause. "I was happy to see Sarfaraz perform because that is what I wanted. I personally thought that since I wasn’t able to perform, I didn’t deserve to play in the next series." WATCH | Babar gives blunt response when asked if he regrets not playing Sarfaraz Ahmed for four years Ahmed had a terrific series with the bat as he smashed 335 runs in the Two tests with an average of 83.75. He ended the series as Pakistan's highest run-getter. The former Pakistan captain made his comeback into the Test squad after four long years in the wilderness. While Rizwan claims he played a part in Ahmed's selection, the latter had smashed a century and a half-century in the Quaid-e-Azam trophy in the last two outings in Sindh, prior to the comeback call. Skipper Babar Azam in a press conference also conceded that Ahmed was selected based on his performance. "As I mentioned before in the Test match presser, the way he waited, he remained undeterred and didn't lose hope. He did all his training, wicket-keeping and batting with dedication and executed his plans to perfection when he got a chance. He played a great knock in a crunch situation and that's a hallmark of an experienced player. It was a dream comeback for sure." (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Asked coach and captain to drop me: Mohammed Rizwan on not playing the New Zealand Test series

Pakistan's veteran pacer Sohail Khan, who last represented the Men in Green in 2017 and is best known for his five-fer versus India in the 2015 ODI World Cup, has been in the news of late. Sohail had an interaction recently, where he said a number of things about Indian cricketers Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Umran Malik, Gautam Gambhir, etc.

Pakistani cricketers -- especially former players -- often make the headlines for their glaring remarks on Indian cricket. Sohail joined the bandwagon when he recently commented on India's young pacer Umran Malik. Speaking on The Nadir Ali podcast, he said, "I feel this Umran Malik guy is a good bowler. I’ve seen 1-2 matches. He runs fast and has kept other things in check as well. But if you think of fast bowlers with speed in excess of over 150-155 kph, I can count 12-15 players right now who play tape-ball cricket. If you go visit the trails organised by Lahore Qalandars, you’ll find many players."

Sohail added, "Iske (Umran Malik) jaise toh bohot hain. Domestic cricket bhari padi hai hamaari. (Our domestic setup is filled with bowlers like Umran Malik).&nbsp;When a bowler comes through in our domestic level, he becomes a bonafide bowler. Like Shaheen, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf… these are bowlers who know their stuff. I can give you plenty of names."

Thus, Sohail's statement on Umran -- where he says such raw pacers are in abundance in Pakistan's domestic circuit -- hasn't been well received by many Indian cricket fans. A Twitterati, named Major Gaurav Arya took note of Sohail's comments and schooled him, reminding him of Javed Miandad's ill-comments on Irfan Pathan on the eve of India's historic tour of Pakistan in 2004. Here's what he tweeted:&nbsp;

"Pakistani cricketer says Umran Malik jaise humare domestic cricket mein bhare pade hain. Javed Miandad said the same about Irfan Pathan. Phir Irfan ne Pakistan mein ja kar Pakistan ki team ka band bajaya tha. He then went to Pakistan and proved his worth. Pakistanis should speak less)," the Twitter user wrote.

India's former all-rounder Irfan joined in and gave a befitting reply to Sohail by saying, "Major sahab ese statements de kar inhe attention chahiye. Ignore maariye&nbsp;(Major, they want to get attention by making these statements. Please ignore)."

Talking about the Twitter user's&nbsp;mention of Miandad's comments on Irfan, it was during India's 2004 tour of Pakistan when the then Pakistani coach brushed aside the pacer's&nbsp;threat. Irfan had a stellar run in India's 2003/04 tour of Australia. However, Miandad played it down whereas Irfan maintained silence and let his performances do the talking. Irfan chipped in with key scalps in India's 3-2 ODI series win whereas ended with 12 wickets, at 28.50, to help Sourav Ganguly &amp; Co. beat Pakistan 2-1 in three Tests.

Speaking of Umran, he made a mark at the highest level during IPL 2022 with 22 scalps; the fourth-most by any. Since then, his stocks have risen. While he missed out on being a part of India's 2022 T20 World Cup squad, he has remained in the scheme of things of India's white-ball setup.&nbsp;

Recently, Umran was part of India's 2-1 T20I series win over New Zealand at home. With the ODI World Cup set to be held later this year in India, the 23-year-old will be eager to remain consistent with the ball and be a part of the national squad for the showpiece event.
