On Thursday (October 27), Jay Y Lee was named as executive chairman of Samsung, confirming that the billion-dollar company will be run by the third generation of the founder family.

The board approved Lee's ascension to the helm of the $250 billion company, it said in a statement.

It was expected that Lee will take over the company in 2020 after the demise of his father, but the process was delayed due to a corruption probe and two-year imprisonment.

Lee earlier functioned as the vice-chairman of Samsung Electronics since 2012.

The announcement came the same day the company declared poor earnings and warned that it doesn't expect the situation to get better until the second half of the year 2023.

The electronics giant reported a drop of 31 per cent in its third-quarter profit. The geopolitical uncertainties will dampen demand until early 2023, it said, according to a Reuters report.

Diwali, not just a festival but an emotion for millions, will now be a public school holiday in New York City from 2023, the mayor announced on Thursday (October 21).

Eric Adams made the announcement along with New York Assembly Member Jenifer Rajkumar, who proposed the legislation to recognise 'Diwali' at NYC schools, CNN reported.

The mayor further said that the decision was a "long overdue" acknowledgement for the Hindu, Sikh, Jain, and Buddhist communities.

Rajkumar said, "The time has come to recognise over 200,000 New Yorkers of the Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, and Jain faiths who celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights."

This time, the legislators switched out 'Anniversary Day,' or 'Brooklyn-Queen Day' for the Hindu festival Diwali. Rajkumar said 'Anniversary Day' was "an obscure and antiquated day," as compared to Diwali.

The Anniversary Day dates back to 1829, and schools have been observing a day since the mid-1990s.

The New York mayor during the conference said that the legislation will make students learn more about Diwali and its celebrations. CNN reported him as saying, "We're going to have them start talking about what it is to celebrate the Festival of Lights, and how do you turn a light on within yourself."

'Diwali' to be a public school holiday from 2023 in New York City, announces mayor

Colombia, the world's leading cocaine producer, broke its own record for coca leaf cultivation in 2021, a UN body said Thursday, as the government highlighted the "failure" of the US-led war on drugs.

There was "an increase of 43 per cent in the area planted with coca... from 143,000 hectares in 2020 to 204,000 ha in 2021," the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said in a statement.

This was the highest figure since the UNODC started monitoring Colombia's cocaine production 21 years ago.

The increase in coca cultivation went hand-in-hand with a rise in cocaine production from 1,010 tonnes in 2020 to 1,400 tonnes last year, destined mainly for the United States and Europe.

"This continued an upward trend that has been consolidating since 2014," said the UNODC.

At the presentation of the report in Bogota, Justice Minister Nestor Osuna said the numbers were clear evidence "of the failure of the war on drugs."

He said the government was working on a new drug policy, which for now would not include legalizing cocaine.

But he expressed the hope that "one day" the cocaine trade will be regulated at a global level.

As part of a new approach, Colombia's leftist President Gustavo Petro has mooted an amnesty for drug traffickers willing to give themselves up and abandon the trade.

He has also proposed purchasing arable land to redistribute to small farmers to make a living from legal crops, free from the violent yoke of the drug gangs they rely on to make a living.

Holistic approach

Petro considers small-scale coca growers the victims of a state that for years poisoned their land with pesticides to eradicate the illegal plantations.

Thousands of coca growers and pickers are behind bars on trafficking charges in Colombia.

Petro's predecessor, Ivan Duque, had been a key ally of the drug war led by the United States -- the world's leading cocaine consumer.

Earlier this month, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met Petro in Colombia, saying afterwards they shared "extensive common ground," despite the new president's change of tack.

"We strongly support the holistic approach the Petro administration is taking," Blinken said after the meeting.

"On both the enforcement side but also on the comprehensive approach to the problem... I think that we're largely in sync," he added.

The UNODC said coca cultivation "continues to threaten the cultural potential of the country and its biodiversity," contributing to deforestation.

Half of the plantations are in special management areas, it said, and a high percentage on the lands of black communities and in forest reserve areas.

J&K Police is the country's best force fighting on multiple fronts with utmost professionalism," said Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.

Hitting out at the political parties without naming any, the Lieutenant Governor said that those trying to justify the innocent killings for their personal gains, were actually challenging the country’s sovereignty and integrity. "I don’t hesitate to state here that, if needed, such people will face action as per the law," Sinha said.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police said that 1,604 policemen have attained martyrdom in the last 30 years while fighting terrorism in the Valley.

It's been over a week since New Zealand's government announced taxes on cattle burps and urine emissions to control agricultural emissions.

Framers have now begun protesting against the decision.

Convoys of farmers' vehicles were seen in Auckland, Wellington, and other states, demanding the government to take back what they call the "burp and fart" tax. Thousands of farmers were seen carrying placards that read, "We're not going to take it."

The rule was announced by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, stating it to be the first in the world to attempt to control methane and nitrous oxide emissions.

Methane is one of the most harmful gases. In New Zealand, methane emissions from over six million cows are one of the major environmental problems.

Ardern argued that this law is needed to slow down emissions and could even benefit farmers if they charged for climate-friendly meat.

Also read | Study shows methane is much more sensitive to global heating than previously thought

However, the protest organiser Bryan Mackenzie said, "The government's ideological commitment to punitive and counterproductive emissions taxes on food production is an existential threat to rural communities."

"After years of faux consultation, the government has given up on all pretence of a fair and workable agricultural emissions policy," AFP quoted him as saying.

According to scientists, agriculture emissions are nearly responsible for 30 per cent of the country's climate conditions. Environmentalists argued that the farmers are stuck in the mud, and if they don't implement the rule, they with everyone will suffer due to the climate condition of the country worsening.

At least 15 people have been killed in the latest outbreak of ethnic clashes after land disputes in Sudan's southern Blue Nile state, local leaders and medical sources said Wednesday.

Fighting broke out last week after reported arguments over land between members of the Hausa people and rival groups in Wad al-Mahi, near Roseires in Sudan's troubled southern region, some 500 kilometres (310 miles) south of the capital Khartoum.

On Wednesday, fresh fighting erupted, with residents reporting intense gunfire and homes being torched.

"There was heavy shooting, and houses were burnt down," one local resident said, asking not to be named.

A medic at the Wad al-Mahi clinic, who asked not to be named, said they had "received 10 bodies", while another worker at the hospital in the city of Roseires said the facility received "five bodies and 10 wounded."

Clashes took place despite a heavy deployment of security forces in the area, as well as an overnight curfew, a Hausa leader said.

Last week, clashes in the same area sparked by "a dispute over land issues" left at least 13 people dead and 24 injured, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Fighting between the Hausa people and other groups first broke out in July, with some 149 dead and 124 wounded up until early October, according to a toll reported by OCHA.

Some 65,000 people have been forced to flee their homes, the UN said.

The July clashes erupted after Hausa members requested the creation of a "civil authority", that rival groups saw as a means of gaining access to land.

The clashes also triggered angry protests across Sudan, with the Hausa people demanding justice for those killed.

By late July, senior leaders agreed to cease hostilities. Despite the deal, clashes broke out again in September.

"We remain concerned that there may be more chains of transmission and more contacts than we know about in the affected communities," he added.

The previous death toll provided by the WHO on October 5 reported 29 fatalities.

Museveni had already ordered traditional healers to stop treating the sick, in a bid to stop the spread of the virus.

He also ordered the police to arrest anyone infected with Ebola who refused to isolate.

The authorities say the outbreak remains concentrated in the central districts of Mubende and Kassanda has not reached Kampala, despite a couple testing positive for the virus in the capital.

Tedros on Wednesday said two cases from Mubende sought care in Kampala, "increasing the risks of transmission in the city" of 1.5 million people.

Just few moments after Sweden's Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced his new government on Tuesday, his right-wing party has announced to scrap of the "feminist foreign policy," launched by the opposition left wing in 2014.

The new Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom announced this move.

The policy was first coined in 2014 by former foreign minister Margot Walolstrom, in the hope to mark gender equality in the country. The policy was introduced to increase female participation in the administration along with fighting sexual violence and economic emancipation, AFP reported.

The "feminist foreign policy" has been adopted by several other countries but some are opposed like the middle east. According to a document published in 2021, Sweden was able to help contribute its new policies to countries like Somalia and Moldova. The policy was also added to Colombia's 206 peace deal.

The document further stated that the policy was also able to contribute to new legislation in at least 20 countries including gender-based violence, female genital mutilation and more.

Despite its disappointing trial earlier, AstraZeneca, a nasal vaccine to treat Covid is said to have a powerful future, experts say.

China last month became the first country to approve the nasal vaccine.

The nasal shot aims to build mucous membrane immunity and will also prevent people from getting infected. It will also help infected people to avoid spreading it.

Experts believe that once tests are successful, the nasal vaccine will give a boost to vaccine campaigns in comparison to traditional jabs as it has less capability of stopping the transmission of the virus.

Last week, researchers at Oxford tested the nasal vaccine in a phase 1 trial. The trial was deemed a failure as the nasal vaccine promoted antibodies in very few participants and the immune responses were weak in comparison to traditional jabs, AFP reported.

The researchers claimed that the results were different from the data received from China. The latter claimed to have significant results if the vaccine can be delivered directly to the lungs with a bit complex nebuliser.

It is important for the researchers to find out why the vaccine fell short, in order to build a more effective and strong nasal vaccine.

Additionally, Connor Bamford, a virologist, said that neither similar nasal vaccines developed for polio and influenza are all live vaccines and have performed well, pointing hope for researchers.

According to an analysis by Airfinity and Nature, nearly 100 nasal vaccines have been developed amongst which only 20 have been tested on humans.

With falling inoculation rates globally prompting countries to destroy thousands of vaccines, the demand for new vaccines remains uncertain.

During the debate in the General Assembly, Kamboj said, "We have witnessed, unsurprisingly, yet again, an attempt by one delegation to misuse this forum and make frivolous and pointless remarks against my country."

She added, "The entire territory of Jammu and Kashmir is and will always be an integral part of India... We call on Pakistan to stop cross-border terrorism so our citizens can enjoy their right to life and liberty."

The UNGA debate was held to condemn Russia for its illegal annexation of four regions in Ukraine. Among the present members, 143 voted in favour of the resolution against Russia, with only five supporting the country in its decision.
