Google has a "moral obligation" to stop a democracy protest song appearing in search results, Hong Kong's leader said Tuesday, as row over China's national anthem widened to include the tech giant.

Hong Kong officials have been infuriated by a series of mistakes at international sporting events in recent weeks when a protest song has been played instead of China's national anthem for the city's athletes.

Their ire has increasingly focused on Google after it emerged that the protest song "Glory to Hong Kong" routinely appears at the top of the page when people search for Hong Kong's anthem.

City leader John Lee told reporters on Tuesday that Google should ensure China's national anthem -- which the city's athletes compete under -- comes at the top of the search page.

"If any company is in anyway responsible, it has that moral obligation," he said.

Lee's comments came a day after Hong Kong's security chief Chris Tang said Google had refused to change the search results, something he said was an issue of "great regret".

According to Tang, a former police chief, Google said its search engine results were governed by an algorithm, not human input.

Both Tang and Lee have countered that Google has been willing to amend search results to abide by local laws, including privacy laws in the European Union.

Lee said his administration would reach out again to Google to pursue the matter.

Google has not yet responded to requests for comment.

China's national anthem is "March of the Volunteers", a rousing song born out of the Communist Party's struggle to liberate the country from Japanese occupation.

"Glory to Hong Kong" was penned during huge protests that swept Hong Kong in 2019 and became hugely popular within the city.

It is now all but illegal to sing the song or play its melody under a sweeping national security law that was imposed to crush those protests.

"There are ways to do it," Lee added.

A new study has revealed that the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics which helps in shaping the US food policies has financial ties to the world's most renowned processed food companies.

Gary Ruskin, executive director of US Right to Know who also co-authored the study said, "It’s incredibly influential so if the Academy is corrupt then nutritional policy in the US is going to be corrupt."

The Academy has been criticised for its big ties. The report also reveals that the academy has quid pro quo with food giants and owns stock in processed food companies like Nestle and Pepsico. It was also headed by former industry employees.

In other news, US President Joe Biden said Thursday he is open to holding talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but only if he wants to end the war. Morning news brief: Setback for Trump, India rejects Chinese objection and more

The rape case retrial against former political adviser Bruce Lehrmann has been dropped, as it poses a "significant and unacceptable risk" to the woman complainant's life. The 27-year-old former adviser was accused of raping his colleague Brittany Higgins inside Australia's Parliament House.

As per the accuser, on March 22, 2019, Lehrmann sexually assaulted her on a minister's sofa after a night out. She said both had drinks with colleagues and others and she later fell asleep on a sofa in defence industry minister Linda Reynolds's office, and had woken up to find Lehrmann having sex with her.

Lehrmann denied doing so. He maintained that no sex took place. His lawyer said that Higgins's accusations are "totally and utterly inconsistent."

However, the prosecutor said that the ongoing risk to Higgins's mental health for retrial is not in the public interest.

The case was dropped in October due to misconduct by the jury. This is because after 12 days of testimony and five days of discussion in the trial, it was found that one of the jurors had brought in academic research papers looking at false accusations in the sexual assault case.

Higgins's friend Emma Webster said that she is currently in the hospital for treatment to deal with the trauma of the alleged incident. In a statement, Webster said that the last couple of years were difficult for Higgins and that she is disappointed that the trial has ended in this way.

Higgins waived her right to privacy by disclosing her narrative to authorities in early 2021 and went public with her allegations in some television interviews.

Her accusations acted as the catalyst for Australia's "Me Too moment," which then sparked demonstrations over women's safety. She reported her case days after the incident as she feared for her career, a jury head claimed.

The incident led to a damning review the finding of which showed that a third of the woman employees in the federal parliament had faced sexual harassment.

A special operation by the Sri Lankan Navy and the coast guard has led to the seizure of five Indian fishing trawlers and 24 Indian fishermen being taken into custody, by the neighbouring island nation. The Sri Lankan Navy says that they carried out a special operation in their northern waters to chase away Indian "poaching trawlers" on Monday evening. The seized trawlers and the 24 Indian fishermen were taken to the Kankesanthurai Harbour and are to be handed over to the Mailadi Fisheries Inspector for further legal proceedings.

According to the Lankan Navy, they deployed craft of the fourth Fast Attack Flotilla and the Sri Lanka Coast Guard attached to the Northern Naval Command, to chase away a cluster of Indian poaching trawlers in Sri Lanka’s waters, off the Kovilan Lighthouse, Kareinagar, Jaffna. "The operation led to the seizure of five Indian poaching trawlers continued to remain in island’s waters, with 24 Indian fishers and their fishing gear," they said. The Lankan Navy maintains that illegal fishing practices of foreign fishermen in Sri Lanka’s waters deal a blow to the livelihood of local fishermen as well as the marine ecosystem.

The South Korean government has finally issued an order for thousands of truckers striking who are demanding better wages and working conditions. This is the first time the government has exercised its controversial powers under a law forcing strikers to get back to work.

The 'work start order' was issued in a cabinet meeting with the president's presence, targeting nearly 2,500 cement truckers out of the thousands to get back to the work, AP reported.

Officials said that the work order has been passed for the cement truckers as the construction industry caused major harm.

India: Hundreds of protesters clash with police over Adani's port project, 80 injured

In what can be regarded as a great leap for the Indian space sector, a private firm has inaugurated its own rocket launch pad and mission control centre. This latest development from Chennai-based rocket company Agnikul Cosmos will enable them to launch their own rockets into space. This private facility, also India’s first such, is located within India’s existing and lone spaceport, the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota.

The new facility has been inaugurated on Monday, by the Chairman, of ISRO, Dr S. Somanath, senior officials from ISRO and the Agnikul team. It has been designed by Agnikul and executed with support from IN-SPACe (the government entity which supports and promotes private space firms in India). This facility comprises two sections - Agnikul Launchpad (ALP) and Agnikul Mission Control Centre(AMCC).

Also read | ISRO conducts 200th consecutive launch of 'RH-200' sounding rocket; here's all you need to know

According to Agnikul, all critical systems connecting these two sections - which are 4 km away from each other are redundant to ensure 100 per cent operationality during the countdown. The Launchpad is built specifically keeping in mind the ability to support liquid-stage controlled launches, while also addressing the need for ISRO’s range operations team to monitor key flight safety parameters during launches. Additionally, it has the ability to, as necessary share data and other critical information with ISRO’s mission control centre.

Agnikul’s first launch will be a controlled & guided mission having a vertical launch and will happen from this launchpad. The mission would be a technology demonstrator that will mirror Agnikul’s orbital launch but at a reduced scale. The company's Agnibaan rocket is a highly customisable, 2-stage launch vehicle, capable of taking up to 100 kg payload to orbits around 700 km high (low Earth orbits) and enables plug-and-play configuration. Agnilet is the world's first single-piece 3D printed engine fully designed and manufactured in India and was successfully test-fired in early 2021 & became the first company in the country to test its engines at ISRO.

Speaking at the inauguration event, Secretary, Dept. of Space and Chairman, ISRO, Dr S Somanath said "The first exclusive launch pad for a private launch vehicle has come up at Satish Dhawan Space Center (SDSC). Now India can travel to space from one more space platform. Thanks to Agnikul."

Also read | ISRO tests parachute system that's meant to land Indian astronauts safely on water

Commenting about their new facility, Srinath Ravichandran, Co-founder & CEO, Agnikul said, "The ability to launch from our own launchpad while still working with ISRO’s launch operations teams is a privilege that we have been granted by ISRO & IN-SPACe and I am deeply grateful to them for the same. It is dream come true for all of us at Agnikul to launch our vehicles from a facility we have designed and built ourselves."

Over the last 60 years, the most sophisticated aspects of India’s space programme (such as building and launching rockets, satellites, and operating support facilities) have been the monopoly of India’s Government-run space agency. However, the space sector reforms rolled out by the Indian Government in 2020, permitted private companies to delve into this niche sector and carry out business activities.

In line with this, India has witnessed a multiplication of start-ups in the space sector, recently India’s first privately built rocket was launched into the upper atmosphere, and satellites built by Indian firms were launched on India’s workhorse PSLV rocket (built and operated by the Government-run space agency).

The announcement from Agnikul takes this further, as it would be the fifth operational rocket Launchpad in India. ISRO operates two main launchpads in Sriharikota meant for its large orbital rockets and has a Sounding rocket complex for its smaller & sub-orbital rockets. ISRO’s lead facility in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram also has a Launchpad for small-sounding (sub-orbital) rockets. In addition to this, the Indian Government is building another spaceport for small orbital rockets, closer to the tip of the Indian peninsula, at Kulasekarapattinam in Tamil Nadu.

Also read | ISRO conducts 200th consecutive launch of 'RH-200' sounding rocket; here's all you need to know According to Agnikul, all critical systems connecting these two sections - which are 4 km away from each other are redundant to ensure 100 per cent operationality during the countdown. Thanks to Agnikul." Also read | ISRO tests parachute system that's meant to land Indian astronauts safely on water Commenting about their new facility, Srinath Ravichandran, Co-founder & CEO, Agnikul said, "The ability to launch from our own launchpad while still working with ISRO’s launch operations teams is a privilege that we have been granted by ISRO & IN-SPACe and I am deeply grateful to them for the same. It is dream come true for all of us at Agnikul to launch our vehicles from a facility we have designed and built ourselves." Elon Musk shared on Saturday that he may launch his own smartphone if Apple and Google decide to remove the Twitter app from their app stores. Since Twitter is reportedly facing close scrutiny by both Apple and Google app stores, there were concerns that the micro-blogging platform may be removed from their app stores. Musk was replying to right-wing podcaster Liz Wheeler’s suggestion that he should create a new phone if the tech giants boot Twitter from their app stores.

Wheeler said the endeavour would not be a challenge for a man who builds rockets to Mars, and added that “half the country would happily ditch the biased, snooping iPhone & Android” and purchase instead the “tELONphone” a term she coined for the device.

Former Pak PM Imran Khan calls off long march in Islamabad to avoid ‘chaos’ in nation

Venezuela's government and opposition have asked the United Nations to manage a fund for billions of dollars now held in foreign banks, which will be gradually unfrozen to combat a humanitarian crisis in the oil-rich nation, delegates announced in Mexico City on Saturday.

Sources told Reuters last month the frozen funds amount to more than $3 billion.

Talks between Maduro's government and its political opponents resumed in Mexico City on Saturday, mediated by Norway, after being on ice for more than a year.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken welcomed the talks as "an important step toward restoring democracy to Venezuelans.

"We will look to the parties to achieve lasting agreements that set the course for free and fair presidential elections in 2024," he said on Twitter.

Maduro also posted a statement on Twitter, saying: "We will always strive for dialogue with all Venezuelan society. We continue to take important steps for the well-being of our country."

Following the announcement for an UN-administered fund, the US Treasury Department issued a license for Chevron, the second largest US oil company, to expand operations in Venezuela, allowing it to import Venezuelan crude into the United States.

The government's delegation was led by congressional leader Jorge Rodriguez of Venezuela's ruling United Socialist Party (PSUV), and the opposition group was headed by politician Gerardo Blyde.

Maduro had said the aim of the talks was to recover the "kidnapped" resources for public investment: "Then we will see what other issues can be discussed."

The funds are set to help stabilize the country's electric grid, improve education infrastructure and deal with the impact of this year's deadly rains and flooding.

It is part of a broad agenda that covers US sanctions on Venezuela, conditions for the next presidential elections and the status of hundreds of political prisoners - though these issues will not be discussed in this round of talks.

"This agreement provides the template for how further progress can be secured," the European Union said in a statement.

More than 7.1 million Venezuelans have left their country according to UN estimates this year, many migrating to other Latin American countries or the United States, as Venezuela battles high inflation, and food and medicine shortages. More than half of Venezuelan migrants do not have access to three meals a day, UN estimates showed.

In Venezuela, a survey by local universities this year showed some 78 per cent of the population was worried about lack of food, compared with 88 per cent in 2021.

Some Venezuelan and US critics raised concerns the liquidity injection could boost Maduro's credentials before the country's 2024 elections.
