As per the Cornell University website, Feline infectious peritonitis is a viral disease in cats caused by certain strains of the feline coronavirus.

While most feline strains of coronavirus known as feline enteric coronavirus (FeCV), are found in the gastrointestinal tract do not cause significant disease, in some cases it can become the dangerous disease known as FIPV.

As per the website, in about 10 per cent of FeCV-infected cats, the virus can mutate, infecting white blood cells and spreading throughout the cat's body. This triggers an intense inflammatory reaction, often in the abdomen, kidney, or brain, leading to the development of FIP.

Once a cat develops clinical FIP, the disease is usually progressive and almost always fatal.

<h2>Can this strain of coronavirus infect humans?</h2>

It is widely believed that the COVID-19 virus which brought the world to its knees some time ago could've originated in bats and crossed the species barrier into humans.

Last year, the World Health Organization also warned that as climate change contributes to the rapidly changing weather, animals, humans and even viruses and pathogens are changing their behaviour.

At the time, the international health agency's emergencies director Mike Ryan, who leads WHO's response to disease outbreaks, humanitarian crises and other public health emergencies warned that diseases that normally infect animals are now infecting people due to 'ecological fragility'.

So, could the feline coronavirus jump species and infect humans? Thankfully, no.

According to Cornell's Feline Health Center, "to our knowledge, coronaviruses cannot be passed from infected cats to humans." AFP too reports that the virus is not transmissible to humans. However, as per a Cyprus based animal lover it may soon turn Cyprus into "the island of dead cats".

<h2>Is there no cure for Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP)?</h2>

AFP reports that to contain the spread of FIP, two treatment options are being considered.

One is molnupiravir, an anti-Covid pill that officials say cannot be authorised for use on animals in Cyprus. The other option is GS-441524, an antiviral tablet similar to the COVID-19 treatment remdesivir, which is approved for animal use in Britain but not readily available in Cyprus due to its high cost of 3,000 to 7,000 euros (about $3,300-$7,700) per cat.

Talking to AFP, Demetris Epaminondas, vice president of the Pancyprian Veterinary Association said that efforts are underway to obtain government authorisation for molnupiravir, which would cost a more affordable 200 euros per cat.

The Cyprus agriculture ministry said that is exploring various therapeutic preparations available on the European market to address the issue.

However, in the meantime, some desperate pet owners have reportedly resorted to purchasing medicines on the black market, risking legal consequences to save their beloved animals.

Speaking to AFP on the condition on anonymity, one Cypriot said: "We bought our medicines on the black market online, or from Facebook groups. But we keep our suppliers secret so that we can continue to treat our animals."

The official number of FIP cases reported by the agriculture ministry in the southern part of the island stands at 107. However, animal advocates claim that the actual number of cats dying from the disease is much higher, with an estimated 300,000 cats lost since January.

The contagious nature of FIP has made it challenging to diagnose and document, especially with the large population of stray cats on the island. Experts estimate that the cat population in Cyprus is equal to or even exceeds the human population of just over one million. In the southern part of the island, Dinos Ayiomamitis, head of Cats PAWS Cyprus and vice-president of Cyprus Voice for Animals, estimates that a third of the cats have succumbed to the virus.

As the FIP outbreak continues to spread, there are concerns that Cyprus may become known as "the island of dead cats." Animal advocates and veterinarians are urging swift action to address the crisis and save the island's beloved feline population.

Leslie Van Houten, a follower of late mass murderer Charles Manson was released from prison on Tuesday (July 11) after spending 53 years behind bars. Houten was 19 when she was charged with two murders in 1969.

Houten has been recommended for parole five times since 2016. She was sentenced for&nbsp;being involved in the murders of Leno LaBianca, a grocer in Los Angeles, and his wife Rosemary.

Her attorney Nancy Tetreault confirmed the news and said her client&nbsp;will be under parole supervision.&nbsp;

Nancy told The Guardian, "She’s really thrilled, but she’s been in prison for 53 years and turns 74 next month so this is a huge change."

She added, "She’s gratified that people are recognising that she’s completely reformed because she really is. I’ve never had a client who has dedicated herself to reform like she has. She spent 40 years in therapy and 30 years in what they call rehabilitative programming."

Admitting that Leslie fell under the influence of Charles Manson and participated in the brutal murders, Nancy said that Leslie worked really hard to get past that cult and to understand and take responsibility for the future.&nbsp;

California Governor Gavin Newsom had said last week that he won't be asking the state's Supreme Court to block her parole.

Erin Mellon, communications director for the Office of the Governor, had said,&nbsp;"The Governor is disappointed by the Court of Appeal's decision to release Ms Van Houten but will not pursue further action as efforts to further appeal are unlikely to succeed. The California Supreme Court accepts appeals in very few cases, and generally does not select cases based on this type of fact-specific determination."

A representative from Newsom's office told the news outlet, "More than 50 years after the Manson cult committed these brutal offences, the victims’ families still feel the impact, as do all Californians."

Who is Leslie Van Houten?

Leslie Louise Van Houten was born on August 23, 1949.

At the age of 14, she began taking LSD and Benzedrine and using drugs after her parents got divorced.

In 1966, she moved to Northern California where she met Catherine Share, Bobby Beausoleil, and another woman, and moved in with them.

They all joined Manson's group, who&nbsp;controlled every aspect of their lives, from food to drugs.

On August 9, 1969, Van Houten, along with Tex Watson, Patricia Krenwinkel, Linda Kasabian, Clem Grogan, and Manson, went to Rosemary and LaBianca's house and killed the couple. Manson&nbsp;allegedly sent other people in the group to kill an actor.

When asked, Manson denied all responsibility and never explained the motive for the murder.

However, prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi suggested that Manson wanted to start a racial civil war.

Manson died behind bars in 2017 at the age of 83 after nearly 50 years in prison.

Van Houten's Parole

In the most recent parole denial, Newsom said that Houten still poses a danger to society. Rejecting her parole, he said she offered an inconsistent and inadequate explanation for her involvement in the killings.

However, the second district court of appeal ruled 2-1 to reverse Newsom's decision, stating that there is no evidence to support the governor's conclusion.

In the May decision, the judges took issue with Newsom's claim that Houten did not adequately explain how she fell under Manson's influence.

At her hearings, she explained how her parents' divorce, her drug and alcohol abuse, and a forced illegal abortion led her down a path that left her vulnerable.

They argued, "Van Houten has shown extraordinary rehabilitative efforts, insight, remorse, realistic parole plans, support from family and friends, favourable institutional reports, and, at the time of the governor's decision, had received four successive grants of parole."

Acknowledging India's consistent helping hand for his nation, Shahid said, "President Solih (Ibrahim Mohamed Solih) is fully committed in his foreign policy for India first and we are encouraged by Prime Minister Modi's SAGAR policy the neighbourhood first policy, and he has also very clearly said that amongst the neighbourhood Maldives is the first."

Maldives is a key maritime neighbour of India. The nation holds a special place in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of 'SAGAR' (Security And Growth for All in the Region).

Addressing the future areas of collaboration between the two nations, the Maldivian foreign minister commended India for its contribution to the Maldives' human resource development "over the last several decades" and said that "it is also something that will continue."

Riikka Purra, the leader of the Finns Party and Finland's Finance Minister, issued an apology on Tuesday for the racist comments she made online more than a decade ago. This apology comes after her remarks were condemned by her cabinet colleagues.

Purra, who assumed leadership of the far-right Finns Party in 2021, was accused of making inflammatory comments in 2008. These included various anti-immigrant, anti-Islam, and racial slurs, as well as threats of violence.

In a statement, Zabiullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the Taliban administration, said that the decision was taken due to the insult of the holy book and Muslim beliefs.

"After the insulting of the holy Quran and granting of permission for insulting of Muslim beliefs ...The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan is ordering the stopping of all activities of Sweden in Afghanistan."

Taliban halt Swedish activities in Afghanistan over ‘heinous’ act of Quran burning

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday said that the latest radar imagery shows no significant rainfall is likely to prevail over Delhi for the next two or three hours. It added that the national capital might receive moderate rain showers, thunderstorms and cloudy skies for the rest of the day, news agency ANI reported.&nbsp;

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will hold a meeting with MCD and flood control officials to discuss the weather situation in the city&nbsp;and the rising water levels of the Yamuna River. This comes as the Haryana government released over 100,000 cusecs of water. According to the Central Water Commission (CWC), the water level might cross the 205.33 metres mark on Tuesday.

The Met Department predicted light to moderate widespread rainfall with isolated instances of heavy to very heavy rainfall in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh, Western Himalayan Region and Rajasthan on Monday. While, Uttar Pradesh may experience isolated extremely heavy rainfall, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to prevail from July 10-12.&nbsp;

Similar to Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Gurugram,&nbsp;schools in Punjab's Ludhiana district will also remain closed on Monday as heavy rainfall wreaked havoc in the region, causing major waterlogging. The Punjab government has directed ministers, deputy commissioners, senior superintendents of police and other officials concerned to visit the affected areas and provide the required assistance.

In Himachal Pradesh, the weather agency has warned that moderate to heavy rainfall with thunderstorms is very likely to continue in the districts of Shimla, Sirmaur, Una, Bilaspur, Solan, Mandi and Kullu. While very heavy rainfall and light to moderate rainfall are likely to occur at a few places in the rest of the state's districts.

The minister, accompanied by other officials, went to the Jain ashram at Varur. After a detailed discussion with Gunadhar Nandi Maharaj, the minister told&nbsp;the media that he was deeply hurt by the murder of Jain monk Kamakumara Nandi Maharaj in the Belagavi district. "The accused have been arrested. The investigation is proceeding within the legal framework by a team led by Deputy SP."

According to Jain Wiki, Gunadhar Nandi Maharaj is the 108th Jain Sree Acharaya, who received his initiation from Jain Monk Kunthu Sagar Maharaj.&nbsp;

He was born on December 20, and his birth name was Raju.&nbsp;

As a follower of non-violence, Jain monk Gunadhar Nandhi Maharaj said he forgives the murderer. He said, "Various seers, including the Panchacharyas, Muslim religious heads, political leaders, including former chief minister Basavaraj Bommai, Minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar, and others, have expressed solidarity." He also apologised to people if he hurt anyone's sentiments.&nbsp;

Parameshwara&nbsp;said that the Jain monk has put forward certain demands to the government:

-Protection for&nbsp;Jain monks during their pilgrimage and the places where monks stay during their yatras.&nbsp;

-He asked for the protection of Jain mandirs.&nbsp;

-Separate development corporations for Jains.&nbsp;

State government rules out CBI investigation

The BJP party earlier accused the Congress party of shielding the killer.

While talking to the media, Parameshwara&nbsp;said that nobody should try to give this case political colour and urged people to stop making irresponsible statements.&nbsp;

He&nbsp;assured that no one is shielding anybody and that a thorough investigation will be conducted.&nbsp;

However, he ruled out a CBI probe stating that the state police are capable of investigating the case.&nbsp;

"As Home Minister, I will not elaborate on the case and leave it to the police to share details after a thorough investigation. As the investigation is being done properly, I don’t see any reason to hand the case over to the CBI," he said.&nbsp;

However, just like other social media platforms, Instagram too has faced difficulties in controlling hate speech and misinformation.

The introduction of Indian rupee trade transactions is anticipated to alleviate pressure on Bangladesh's foreign reserves, he added.

"Nearly 200,000 cannabis plants with an estimated street value of between £115-£130 million ($147 million-$166 million, 135 million-152 million euros) were seized," said the police as per an AFP report.

Additionally, over 1,000 people were arrested during the operation, with more than 450 of them subsequently facing charges.

Steve Jupp, the lead for serious organised crime at the National Police Chiefs' Council, highlighted the direct links between organised networks involved in cannabis production and various other serious criminal activities.

Talking to the press, Jupp said that "Organised networks involved in cannabis production are also directly linked to an array of other serious criminality such as class A drug importation, modern slavery and wider violence and exploitation."

In addition to the cannabis plants, law enforcement officers confiscated 20 firearms and 26 kilograms of cocaine, estimated to be worth £1 million or $1.28 million on the street.

Prosecutors alleged that, apart from the Kyrgyz suspect, the men had been "collecting funds for IS since April 2022", intending to send the money abroad to support the organisation.

The Washington Post reports that German prosecutors have identified the men arrested there as Ata A., a citizen of Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan national Abrorjon K., and five citizens of Tajikistan — Mukhammadshujo A., Nuriddin K., Shamshud N., Said S. and Raboni Z.

Up to this point, the rainfall in July has reached 32.6mm, while the long-period average (LPA) stands at 209.6mm. Last year, the national capital experienced 286.3mm of rainfall during the same month, representing a surplus of 37 per cent.

In the meantime, Delhi's air quality index (AQI) showed a slight improvement today and was categorised as satisfactory (80) at 10 am. Due to the monsoon season, the AQI is expected to remain satisfactory in the upcoming days.

The man was subsequently charged with grooming and possession of child abuse material, offences that carry a potential maximum sentence of 15 years in prison. However, he failed to appear for a scheduled court appearance on May 30, resulting in an arrest warrant being issued.

"However, these children’s lives have been irrecoverably damaged and we know there are too many other children still at risk," added the officer.

Efforts are ongoing to locate additional suspected victims, and the children rescued have been placed under the care of the Philippine Department of Social Welfare and Development.

Following her encounter, Claudia filed a lawsuit against the California Department of Fish and Wildlife in an effort to prove the existence of the animal.&nbsp;

Ed stated that her goal was to prompt real investigation and research. He said Claudia not only believed in what she saw, but she also had verifiable photographic evidence and had multiple witnesses who saw the same thing.&nbsp;

In Bhubaneswar city, near the AIIMS government hospital where the bodies are being kept, Shiv Charan, a resident of West Bengal, has been living in a guest house for the past month, reports BBC.

Charan visits the hospital regularly in the hope of finding his brother Krishra's body, with whom he spoke moments before the crash.

However, the agonising wait seems endless, as he has only managed to identify some of his brother's clothes and is awaiting the results of a DNA test before he can claim them.&nbsp;

Like many others, Charan has sent his DNA samples for testing, a crucial process implemented by the authorities to ensure accurate identification when multiple claimants are involved. However, the timeline for receiving the test results remains uncertain.

Speaking to BBC, he said: "No one has told me when the report will come."&nbsp;

Charan says he wouldn't leave without his brother's body. "I want his last rites to be performed properly," he said. Similar to him, other families too have been camping nearby awaiting information on their lost loved ones.

As per BBC, last week, 29 bodies were identified through DNA reports, and officials have begun handing them over to their respective families. However, there are still 52 bodies that remain unidentified.&nbsp;

Biswajit Sahu, the chief public relations officer of East Coast Railways, assured the publication that the identification process is being conducted cautiously to prevent any errors.&nbsp;

He said that the identification of next of kin "is being done with the help of railway officials, Odisha police, Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation officials and AIIMS staff."

Nevertheless, as per authorities, as time goes on, the task of identifying the bodies becomes increasingly challenging. Questions have arisen regarding the duration for which unclaimed bodies can be kept and what should be done if there are no claimants.&nbsp;

Some have suggested mass cremation as a possible solution. However, as per Sahu, no decision can be made until the DNA testing process is completed.
