GenZ in Nepal on Monday (September 8) is leading a large protest against the corruption in the government of KP Sharma Oli and a recent decision to restrict social media. The issue started as an online movement but later escalated and turned into street protests. Police fired at the crowd, killing 14 protesters and injuring over 80 others. The protest has been termed as “Gen Z Revolution” due to the involvement of thousands of young people and students. The Nepal government issued shoot-at-sight orders as the protesters set the Parliament building gate ablaze. During the protest, many of the protesters broke through police barricades and in response, police opened fire on them, which led the government to impose a curfew in the capital. The curfew covered the area around the Parliament and other key locations as tensions grew throughout the day.
Why the protest began?
The youth-led protest in Nepal was triggered by the government’s decision on September 4 to block 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and YouTube. This move was done by the government because the app makers hadn’t registered them with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. While the government said that the ban on these social media apps is for regulatory reasons, and protesters think that it is a way to silence people's voices and will also restrict free speech. Despite phone and internet blackouts in the capital, youngsters turned to platforms like TikTok and Reddit to spread their protest worldwide. The protest march started from the Maitighar Mandala and later moved towards the Parliament. Police set up barricades, but the protesters pushed through, leading to the use of tear gas and water cannons. Some protesters even managed to enter the Parliament compound.
Nepal Protest: 14 dead, over 80 injured as protest turns violent, army deployed outside PM, President's residence
As protesters took to the streets to oppose the ban imposed on 26 social media apps, the police opened fire at the crowd, killing at least 14 protesters and injuring over 80 others. The Army has also been deployed outside the residence of the Prime Minister and the President following protests in the country against social media ban.
PM KP Sharma Oli defends govt’s decision
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli defended the government’s decision, saying that any attempt to weaken the nation would not be tolerated. Speaking at a Communist Party convention, Oli emphasised that the government would always oppose actions that harm the country’s sovereignty. He also argued that national security is more important than the loss of jobs for individuals. The government had given social media platforms a seven-day deadline, which ended on August 28, to register. However, none of the major platforms, including Meta (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp), Alphabet (YouTube), X (formerly Twitter), Reddit and LinkedIn, have commented on the matter.

Nepali police fired tear gas Sunday at thousands of protesters loyal to a former deputy premier once seen as a rising political star, as he appeared in court on charges his supporters say are politically motivated. Rabi Lamichhane faces charges of fraud and organised crime related to the alleged embezzlement of funds from a financial cooperative before he entered politics, a case that has garnered national attention. Lamichhane rejects the charges, which his angry supporters say were trumped up. Lamichhane is well known for his career as a television host in the Himalayan Republic, making his name as an anti-corruption crusader through aggressive interviews with public officials. He shot to political power in November 2022 with his Rashtriya Swatantra Party tapping into widespread discontent at Nepal's elderly political leadership, becoming the deputy premier and interior minister. But he was sacked in January 2023, after Nepal's top court barred him from office for failing to regain citizenship after giving up his US passport. Police said thousands of people took part in the protests Sunday, with baton-wielding officers blocking off areas around the district court and spraying crowds with water cannons and tear gas. Protesters chanted slogans against Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, claiming the charges against Lamichhane were politically motivated. The Kathmandu Post newspaper reported that a parliamentary committee had accused Lamichhane of embezzling millions of rupees from multiple cooperatives while running the Gorkha Media Network before he entered politics. "We have been supporting the investigation but this is a political vendetta to finish a new party that is working for the betterment of people," RSP party member Toshima Karki said. "They think they can finish our party by attacking an individual, this is wrong," she added. "We are doing a peaceful protest and we are committed to fight against this injustice." The government had mobilised at least 5,000 security personnel in Kathmandu Valley to prevent any untoward incident. Only few motorbikes were seen moving around the capital city since morning.

Meanwhile, police have arrested at least 157 cadres of the Prachanda-led faction for enforcing the general strike in different parts of the country.

Nepal Communist Party's Central Committee members Ashta Laxmi Shakya, Himal Sharma and Amrita Thapa were among those arrested. The protesters vandalised at least three vehicles in Kathmandu for defying the strike.

"Eighty people have been arrested from the Kathmandu Valley, while the remaining 77 were arrested from outside the Valley," Senior Superintendent of Police Basanta Kunwar, spokesperson for Nepal Police, told reporters.

According to the Metropolitan Traffic Police Kathmandu, a taxi was set on fire by demonstrators near Gongabu Bus Park early in the morning. Another taxi and a microbus were vandalised at Swoyambhu and Chabahil areas on the outskirt of Kathmandu.

President Bidya Devi Bhandari appointed as many as 32 office bearers to 11 constitutional bodies on Wednesday morning.

On Wednesday, Chief Justice Cholendra Shamsher Rana administered the oath of office to almost four dozen people in various constitutional bodies in the presence of President Bhandari. The Prachanda-led faction has alleged that they were appointed unconstitutionally.

Narayan Kaji Shrestha, spokesperson for the Prachanda-led faction of the party, has termed the appointment of the office bearers and members of various constitutional bodies by caretaker Oli government as unconstitutional and said that it shows autocratic tendency of the government.

The caretaker government has no right to make new appointments and also reshuffle the cabinet, he said, pointing to the latest cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Oli.

Nepal plunged into a political crisis on December 20 after 68-year-old Oli, known for his pro-China leanings, in a surprise move dissolved Parliament, amidst a tussle for power with Prachanda.

His move to dissolve the 275-member House sparked protests from a large section of the NCP led by Prachanda, also a co-chair of the ruling party. The Prachanda-led faction had been holding protest rallies and pubic gatherings in various parts of the country, including Kathmandu.

Oli, who is the chairperson of a faction of the NCP, has said he was forced to dissolve the House after knowing that the Prachanda-led faction was planning to file a no-confidence motion against him and introduce an impeachment motion against President Bhandari.

Nepal: Hundreds protest again in support of monarchy

A pro-monarch march was held in the capital Kathmandu on Saturday where hundreds took to the streets with national flags to extend their support to a constitutional monarchy.

Hundreds of monarch supporters took to the streets in a pre-organised and well-advertised rally on December 5 demanding the reinstatement of constitutional monarchy and declare Nepal a Hindu state.

Participants of Saturday's massive rally chanted slogans in favour of the Hindu monarchy and demanded the reinstatement of constitutional monarchy in the Himalayan Nation which they claimed was for the sake of country`s national unity and well-being of the people.

"Today, participants are here without being driven by any impulsive feelings, as the movement led by youths has already set off. We can dream of our beautiful Nepal and this nation would obviously get back its monarch status of a Hindu-state. Until and unless we achieve our aim we would fight for it," Amir KC, one of the participants in the march who claimed to be leading over 250 youths from Lalitpur to the venue told ANI.

Saturday's demonstration comes as a series of similar protests were held in the past month for a constitutional monarchy.

On November 10, a group with banner "Nationalist Civic Society" staged a demonstration in Jamal of Kathmandu, demanding restoration of constitutional monarchy and announce Nepal a Hindu state. Two days later, a group named Nepal Scholar Council held a demonstration in Biratnagar with the same demands.

Again on November 19, another group under the banner "Independent Nationalist Citizens Far-West" demonstrated in Dhangadhi followed by a protest in Pokhara on November 25 under the banner "Western Nepali Citizens" and "Nepal Nationalist Group" in Janakpur of Nepal.

The trend of staging demonstrations in other parts of the country also continued to rise as a similar protest was held in Hetauda on 29 November under the banner "Restoration of Constitution Movement" and another protest on 30 November in Kathmandu itself.

Saturday's demonstration was held under banner of Rashtriya Nagarik Andolan Samiti 2077 (National Civic Movement Committee 2020).

Similar kind of protest was planned by Rastriya Prajatantra Party in Jhapa hometown of incumbent Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli in support of the monarch and monarchy.

Observers in Kathmandu claim movement to reinstate the monarch has arisen due to failed attempts of current political parties to cater to public interest.

"When democratic forces don't live up to expectations-- both ruling and opposition parties-- then it`s inevitable that some alternative force will try to take its place. That is how I see the revival of this protest," Biswas Baral, current affairs commentator in Kathmandu told ANI.

"Many people are unhappy with the working of the current government. It has been seen as a failure in controlling COVID-19, in controlling corruption and in implementing federalism. So, there is general disillusionment amongst people so this (protest) could be an expression of that," Baral said.

Protestors on Saturday displayed placards bearing a photo of Prithivi Narayan Shah, the founding father of modern Nepal along with national flags while they chanted slogans against the Federal Democratic Republican System that Nepal adopted in 2008 after the abolition of 240-year-old monarchy.

Nepal has transitioned into a federal democratic republic after the promulgation of a new constitution in 2015.

First General Election of 2017 held after promulgation charter gave a clear mandate to an alliance of the then CPN-UML and CPN (Maoist Center) incumbent NCP which is now in power.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli who since then has clung onto power with responsibilities to implement the constitution, strengthen federalism and good governance is now seen to be failing.

Students in Nepal's Province 2 hit the streets to protest after their exams got cancelled on Friday.

Reportedly, the question paper of Social Studies which was scheduled to be held on Friday was leaked on Thursday evening which prompted the authorities to cancel the exam.

“It is just the gimmickry to cancel the exam. We want our rights, our exams have gone good. If they want to cancel the exam then they should cancel that of C. Math’s or else of whole Nepal,” One of the protesting student from Birgunj told ANI.

Meanwhile, a preliminary investigation carried out by the government has pointed out the Center’s involvement in the incident, the State Minister for Internal Affairs and Law Gyandendra Yadav claimed.

“In our preliminary investigation, we have found that the question leak is not done from the Province no. 2. Because we send the questions an hour before the exam to the centre which is controlled by the security officials. But these questions were released last night; there is suspicion over teachers of Province no. 2 behind the incident which is dismissed.

All 8 district security authorities had probed over it which clearly indicates that no such incidents were performed by the Province- 2. This clearly shows that the SEE question out is made from the centre and there lies conspiracy inside it and an attempt to defame the province 2 is being made,” said Gyanendra Yadav.

Simultaneously, the central government has also initiated a probe into the incident. The Central Investigation Bureau will investigate the irregularities committed during this year's SEE (Secondary Education Examination), including the leakage of question papers before the examinations.
