NBA team owners approved rule changes on Tuesday creating an in-game flopping penalty and expanded coach's video replay challenge starting next season, the league announced. The NBA's Competition Committee -– which includes players, coaches, referees, club owners, team executives and representatives from the National Basketball Players Association -- unanimously recommended both changes to the full board of team owners.

The new flopping rule, adopted on a one-season trial basis, says that when a game official calls a player for a flop -- a motion deliberately trying to entice a referee foul call on another player -- an offending player will be issued a technical foul and the opposing team will be awarded one free throw attempt.

A player will not be ejected from a game based on flopping violations.&nbsp;Referees will not be required to stop play to call a flopping violation, allowing teams with an offensive opportunity to keep going until the game's next natural stoppage.

Referees can call both a foul and a flopping violation on the same play. While flopping violations are not reviewable under a coach's challenge, they can be called during a referee's replay review triggered by a coach's challenge or a referee-initiated replay review of certain types of called fouls. The NBA will continue to look at flopping after games, with fines modified to match technical fouls, starting at $2,000 and increasing for repeat offenders.

The coach's challenge change gives teams a second challenge if their first challenge is successful. Teams must continue to use a timeout to trigger a challenge. They would not be able to challenge without a timeout available. Teams can continue to keep the timeout after a first challenge if successful but will not retain the timeout used for a second challenge whether or not it is successful.

Victor Wembanyama, the San Antonio Spurs' &nbsp;no. 1 pick in 2023 NBA Draft, is all but done in the NBA2K24 Summer League after the game against Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday. Wemby, in his second game, scored 27 points alongside 12 rebounds to show a glimpse of his potential. The Spurs, however, lost the game.

He later said that he's going to sit with San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich and decide on playing further in the Summer League.

"I know I got to talk with Pop," Wembanyama said Sunday to reporters after the game when asked if he's going to play in the Summer League further. "I'm going to listen to what he's going to say, but I'm ready to make any sacrifice for the team and give 100 per cent."

Wembanyama's debut, however, was not something he'd have liked. He had a rough outing during Friday's game against the Charlotte Hornets as he went 2-for-13 while shooting from the field. During the game against Portland though, he almost took the Spurs to victory.

Nonetheless, Wembanyama would be on everyone's focus when he debuts for the Spurs in the NBA. The expectations from him are definitely going to be as big as they were during LeBron James' NBA debut 20 years ago, if not bigger.

Wemby too is 'happy' that the Summer League part is over for him despite it being a special moment in his life as he focuses on his debut.

"Like, this past month, I think basketball wasn't even 50 per cent&nbsp;of my schedule," Wembanyama said. "I can't stand it. I know it's a special moment in my life, but I'm just glad it's over, honestly. I just want to hoop, work out and lift."

The Spurs, who went to the postseason 22 years straight from 1996 to 2019, have missed the trip last four seasons and are hoping that Wembanyama's signing could recreate the magic of former no. 1 draft pick Tim Duncan.

Chris Paul has always been an opponent of the Golden State Warriors but that has changed now. CP3 now has to play alongside Steph Curry, who he had to defend against, and Kyle Thompson, who defended him as an opponent. Paul was traded to the Warriors in a three-way deal around a couple of weeks ago.

At his introductory press conference on Sunday, July 9, Paul said that even his 'family couldn't believe' the change of circumstances. The 12-time All-Star added that he still hasn't spoken to the Warriors teammates or coach Steve Kerr&nbsp;and has little clarity about his role with the team.

"At the end of the day, it's basketball," Paul said. "I'm going into a situation with a bunch of guys who've been playing together for a long time. I'm not as worried about it as everybody else is. ... We'll figure all of that stuff out at camp."

"You don't have the answers right now. We'll practice, and I'm sure there will be things I've got to learn about them, they've got to learn about me, but that's the case with any team," he added.

The 18-year veteran, however, might be reaching the twilight of his career. He had also missed 23 games last season due to injury. Paul although, dismissed the chance of his Warriors stint as his final one with a firm 'no.'

"This is a sport. This is fun. It's a job, but I get to play basketball every day and say that's my way of life. ... I wouldn't spend this time training and playing and hooping, the time away from my family if I didn't love it the way I do. That's not going to change," he said.

Paul, Round 1 Pick 4 in the 2005 NBA draft, was named 2006 Rookie of the Year. Paul has played in 1214 regular-season games and averages 17.9 points per game in his career. His per-game assist average is also a healthy 9.5 with 4.5 rebounds as well.

<h2>How are the groups decided?</h2>

NBA used the world-cup-styled draw to determine the teams in each group. For starters, five pots (sub-groups) were formed in each conference of three teams each. The teams in these pots were divided on the basis of their 2022-23 regular season standings.

For example, Teams finishing first to third were put in the first pot, teams finishing fourth to sixth were placed in the second pot, seventh to ninth in the third pot, 10th to 12th in the fourth pot and 13th to 15th in the fifth pot. The process is done for both conferences.

After putting teams in the pot, the NBA picked one team each from the five pots of the single conference and put them in a group. The process was done thrice in each conference, resulting in three groups of five teams in both, the Eastern and Western conferences.

<h2>How is Group stage round played?</h2>

Each team in its group will play the other four once, twice on the road and twice at home. After the 60 group games, 30 in each conference, winners of all groups will subsequently move to the knockout round.&nbsp;

Apart from the six winners of six groups from both conferences, two teams, one from each conference will also move forward. The team, which will advance apart from the three winners in a single conference, is the one which has finished best among the rest of the 12 teams. These two teams will be called wild card teams.

A total of eight teams, four from each conference (three group winners and one wild card), will move forward into the knockout round.

<h2>How is the Knockout round played?</h2>

The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played by the teams of the same conference. The two quarterfinals will be hosted by two teams with the best record in the Group stage.&nbsp;

The team with the best record in the Group stage among the three group winners in each conference will host the wild card team. The second quarterfinal will be played between the other two group winners of the same conference. The process is the same for the other conference as well and a total of four teams, two from each conference, will advance to semis.

The semifinals between the two same-conference teams will be played at a neutral site, and the winners, one from each conference, will face off in the final, also at a neutral site.

<h2>What if two teams finish with same record in a group?</h2>

In case two teams finish with the same record in a group, then the winner will be determined by the following steps:

<ul>
	<li>Head-to-head record in the Group Stage;</li>
	<li>Point differential in the Group Stage;</li>
	<li>Total points scored in the Group Stage;</li>
	<li>Regular season record from the 2022-23 NBA regular season; and</li>
	<li>Random drawing (in case two or more teams are still tied following the above tiebreakers)</li>
</ul>

The same tie-breaker steps will be used to determine the wild card team from each conference if two or more teams finish with the same record apart from the three group winners.

The same steps will also be in effect to determine which team will play the wild card team in the quarterfinals in case two or more group winners finish with the same record in a conference.

<h2>When and where will the games be played?</h2>

The group stage of the NBA In-Season tournament will be played every Tuesday and Friday, starting November 3. The quarterfinals will be played on December 4-5. The semifinals will be played on December 7 and the final will take place on December 9, in Las Vegas for the 2023-24 season.

The tournament semis and championship game will be held in Las Vegas, Dec. 7 and 9! pic.twitter.com/NZdURUa3XR — NBA (@NBA) July 8, 2023 × How are the teams divided? Each conference has three groups: A, B and C, comprising of five teams each from its own respective conference. There are a total of six groups. Here are the groups from each conference: Western Conference Groups Group A Group B Group C Memphis Grizzlies Denver Nuggets Sacramento Kings Phoenix Suns LA Clippers Golden State Warriors LA Lakers New Orleans Pelicans Minnesota Timberwolves Utah Jazz Dallas Mavericks Oklahoma City Thunder Portland Trail Blazers Houston Rockets San Antonio Spurs Eastern Conference Groups Group A Group B Group C Philadelphia 76ers Milwaukee Bucks Boston Celtics Cleveland Cavaliers New York Knicks Brooklyn Nets Atlanta Hawks Miami Heat Toronto Raptors Indiana Pacers Washington Wizards Chicago Bulls Detroit Pistons Charlotte Hornets Orlando Magic How are the groups decided? How is Group stage round played? Each team in its group will play the other four once, twice on the road and twice at home. After the 60 group games, 30 in each conference, winners of all groups will subsequently move to the knockout round. How is the Knockout round played? The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played by the teams of the same conference. The two quarterfinals will be hosted by two teams with the best record in the Group stage. What if two teams finish with same record in a group? In case two teams finish with the same record in a group, then the winner will be determined by the following steps: Head-to-head record in the Group Stage; Point differential in the Group Stage; Total points scored in the Group Stage; Regular season record from the 2022-23 NBA regular season; and Random drawing (in case two or more teams are still tied following the above tiebreakers) The same tie-breaker steps will be used to determine the wild card team from each conference if two or more teams finish with the same record apart from the three group winners. The same steps will also be in effect to determine which team will play the wild card team in the quarterfinals in case two or more group winners finish with the same record in a conference. When and where will the games be played? The group stage of the NBA In-Season tournament will be played every Tuesday and Friday, starting November 3. The quarterfinals will be played on December 4-5. The semifinals will be played on December 7 and the final will take place on December 9, in Las Vegas for the 2023-24 season. NBA officially announces new In-Season tournament, to be played from 2023-24 season

Gregg Popovich has signed a new deal with the San Antonio Spurs. The NBA's all-time winningest coach has agreed to a new five-year deal with the Spurs, announced the NBA franchise on Saturday. The deal is worth north of $80 million, reported ESPN citing sources. Popovich, with the new deal, has surpassed Monty Williams' deal value of $78.5 million for six years which he signed earlier this summer with the Detroit Pistons.

Popovich, 74, has won five NBA Championships with the Spurs after joining them as interim coach back in 1996. His ongoing 26-year-long stay is also the longest in the history of any coach in not only the NBA but all four major leagues in the country.&nbsp;

Since joining the Spurs in '96, the team signed Tim Duncan in the following year's draft lottery and started a 22-year long streak of postseason trips which ended in 2019-20. The team has once again signed the No. 1 draft pick in French national Victor Wembanyama this year.

Popovich has a career win-loss record of 1,366-761 in NBA and he's also third in all-time playoff wins with 170 victories to his name. He surpassed Don Nelson in March last year for the most career wins by an NBA coach.

While the Spurs went 22-60 last season, Popovich was upbeat and spoke about how much he enjoyed his last season.

"We enjoyed the season because we had such great guys character-wise that it didn't matter how many we lost in a row, what mattered was the film session the next day and what we have to do, and they'd be at practice or the next game and try to fulfil everything we wanted them to do," Popovich said.

"So in a sense, it was one of the most -- this will sound strange -- more enjoyable years. It was fun in a way, not being on TV much and you just go to work and you don't worry about results other than players developing and a team understanding going forward."

NBA: Coach Gregg Popovich signs five-year extension deal with San Antonio Spurs

NBA top draft pick Victor Wembanyama played his long-awaited first game with the San Antonio Spurs on Friday, the 19-year-old Frenchman starting in an NBA Summer League contest against Charlotte.&nbsp;

A sellout crowd of 17,500 spectators jammed the Thomas &amp; Mack Arena to watch the 7-foot-4 (2.24m) prodigy, considered the NBA's greatest prospect since LeBron James arrived two decades ago, against other young prospects.

Wembanyama won the opening tip-off and had an assist on the first Spurs possession, but missed his first three shots -- a baseline jumper, an outside jumper and a layup attempt.

Wembanyama made his first basket in a Spurs uniform with 7:02 remaining in the first quarter, banking in an inside turnaround jumper in the lane while being fouled. He sank the free throw to complete a three-point play.

His opponents, the Hornets, were the club that made forward Brandon Miller the second overall pick.

Already a star in the French league, Wembanyama was considered a runaway choice for the top pick when the Spurs won the NBA Draft Lottery in May and global attention has followed him even before San Antonio made him the first selection last month.

The Summer League, featuring young talent seeking NBA roster spots, offered Wembanyama his first game in a Spurs uniform, but more contests will be coming, including pre-season games and San Antonio's 2023-24 regular-season games starting in October.

There were cautionary notes for Wembanyama before he even took the court.

The third pick in the NBA Draft, Portland guard Scoot Henderson, suffered a right shoulder injury in the third quarter against Houston and didn't return to the game played just before the Spurs met the Hornets.

The fourth pick, Houston guard Amen Thompson, limped off in the final seconds of the fourth quarter, having grabbed his left ankle after falling to the court under the basket.

The Spurs will face Portland on Sunday.

Wembanyama's Spurs debut was played hours after Las Vegas police said no charges will be filed from an incident where guards protecting Wembanyama were involved in an incident with Britney Spears.

Victor Wembanyama debuts for Spurs in NBA Summer League game against Charlotte

No, you don’t ever mess with Britney Spears. The pop singer is in the mood for revenge after she was hit by a security person&nbsp;of NBA star Victor Wembanyama. The singer, bombarded by her own fans, had a fan moment for Victor and tried approaching him when she was smacked in the face out of nowhere. Apparently, as she tried to meet Wembanyama, his security person hit her without even looking at her.&nbsp;

<h2>Britney files&nbsp;police report against&nbsp;NBA star’s security team</h2>

Britney Spears has filed a police report in Las Vegas, Nevada, after she was allegedly assaulted by a member of Victor Wembanyama’s security team who backhanded her in the face when she asked to take a picture with the basketball player. The “Toxic” singer wrote on social media, “Traumatic experiences are not new to me and I have had my fair share of them. I was not prepared for what happened to me last night.”

She further wrote that she recognised Victor Wembanyama in her hotel lobby and saw him at a Las Vegas restaurant where she was eating dinner, and “decided to approach him and congratulate him on his success.” As she approached him, his security “backhanded me in the face without looking back…nearly knocking me down and causing my glasses off my face.”

Meanwhile, the police have filed a report but haven’t confirmed the identities of the parties involved. A Variety report stated, “On July 5, 2023, at approximately 11 p.m., LVMPD officers responded to a property in the 3700 block of Las Vegas Boulevard regarding a battery investigation. The incident has been documented on a police report and no arrest or citations have been issued. No further details will be provided at this time.”

<h2>Who is wrong? Victor's team or Britney Spears?</h2>

The issue has however snowballed into a much larger issue as there are now two versions of the story. Britney Spears has issued a statement saying that she “tapped on his shoulder” while Wembanyama has refuted these claims and said that someone “grabbed him from behind” following which his security person pushed the woman away. He mentioned that he didn’t know it was Britney Spears until “a couple of hours later”.&nbsp;

Britney said in her social post, “It was really loud, so I tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention. I am aware of the player's statement where he mentions ‘I grabbed him from behind,’ but I simply tapped him on the shoulder.”

Later in an interview, the NBA star said that he “didn’t see what happened, because I was walking straight and we were told, ‘Don’t stop’… But that person grabbed me from behind, not on my shoulder, she grabbed me from behind and so I just know the security pushed her away.”&nbsp;

Britney Spears is upset with how an innocent meet and greet has turned out. She claims that neither has she heard from the NBA star nor his security or his team. “I have yet to get a public apology from the player, his security, or their organisation. I hope they will,” Britney wrote.&nbsp;

Calling it an "embarassing" story to share, Britney wrote a lengthy statement detailing exactly how everything panned out that day and she was left humiliated. "I think it’s important to share this story and to urge people in the public eye to set an example and treat all people with respect,” Spears continued.

“Physical violence is happening too much in this world. Often behind closed doors… I cherish the tremendous amounts of love and support I am receiving at the moment. Thank you to the Las Vegas PD and the detectives for their support.”

The National Basketball Association (NBA) has announced that it would be testing out a proposed in-game penalty for flopping in the summer league on provisional basis. The NBA announced the move on its official communications Twitter handle on Tuesday, July 4.

The league had defined flopping or a flop in 2012 as "an attempt to either fool referees into calling undeserved fouls or fool fans into thinking the referees missed a foul call by exaggerating the effect of contact with an opposing player."

The NBA had also introduced an anti-flopping ruling in 2012 but that has rarely been enforced. As per the old rule, a flop by a player resulted in a warning. Post the first warning, there were provisions of an increasing amount of fine for every subsequent flop.

In the latest rule, a flop - to be determined by the referees, will be punished with a single free throw to the opposing team and the possession as well. As for the player who commits the flop violation, the player would be given an unsportsmanlike technical foul.

NBA: Free agent Eric Gordon signs up with Phoenix Suns in two-year deal

NBA star Kyrie Irving has agreed to stay at the Dallas Mavericks in a three-year, $126 million deal, reported ESPN citing Irving's agent. Irving, notably, is considered to be one of the best guards to play in the league.

The Mavericks had traded Dorian Finney-Smith and Spencer Dinwiddie and an unprotected 2029 first-round pick along with a couple of second-round picks to put Irving alongside Luca Doncic.

Dallas, however, didn't get the desired results immediately as they went 5-11 (win-loss) for the first 16 games and eventually failed to qualify for the postseason. Mavs governor Mark Cuban and general manager Nico Harrison, nonetheless, had confirmed keeping Irving in Dallas as their top priority.

"I think Luka and Kai work together," Harrison had said during a media interview in April.

"I think when we have that talented of a player -- that talented of two players -- I think they work together. I really think it's the players around them ... kind of knowing their role with having those two guys out on the floor at the same time. I think that's the thing that we need to work on."

As for Irving, the Mavericks are his fourth franchise, having previously played for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Boston Celtics, and Brooklyn Nets. Irving's exits from the franchise, however, are equally as famous as his game. He had asked for trade from the Cavaliers an year after winning a championship with them in 2016.

His stint with the Celtics also came to end after two seasons amid the popular belief that he wished to join Kevin Durant in free agency as a package. The rumours were proven to be true after both Durant and Irving joined the Nets.

His stay with the Nets had many controversies around him and he eventually asked for trade. The request was granted in February earlier this year when he moved to Dallas.

Irving averages 23.4 points and 5.7 assists in his 671 games he has played so far after making his debut in 2011-12 season with the Cavaliers.

NBA: Kyrie Irving to stay with the Mavericks in three-year , $126 million deal

Top NBA Draft pick Victor Wembanyama said on Friday he felt good after his first practice with the San Antonio Spurs and received a warm welcome that excited him for actual games. The 19-year-old Frenchman, considered the greatest NBA prospect since four-time Most Valuable Player LeBron James, joined his new teammates ahead of next week's start of Summer League contests.

"Felt really good," Wembanyama told reporters after the workout. "I had a warm welcome with the guys and I just can't wait."

The 7-foot-4 (2.24m) centre will join the Spurs in Las Vegas, where they are set to face the Charlotte Hornets next Friday and the Portland Trail Blazers on July 9. That would send Wembanyama against second overall pick Brandon Miller of Charlotte and third selection Scoot Henderson of Portland.

Wembanyama said he expects to play one or two games in Las Vegas.

He's coming off a run to the French league finals that ended earlier this month and a decision not to play for France in the Basketball World Cup later this year.

Wembanyama said he felt even better about his selection by the Spurs after getting some time with other players on the court.

"I was told beforehand there was a good dynamic with the team on and off the court and I started to feel it already," Wembanyama said. "It just makes me even more certain that this is a good environment."

Wembanyama is just getting to know Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, the 74-year-old Hall of Fame legend who is the longest-tenured head coach in American sports after guiding the Spurs since 1996.

"I thought I would experience the yelling a bit earlier, but I haven't yet," Wembanyama said.

<h2>'Every day is different since I came here'</h2>

Popovich, a five-time NBA champion who guided US NBA stars to Tokyo Olympic gold, has mentored star big men David Robinson and Tim Duncan as well as French guard Tony Parker in their adjustments to the NBA.

"He works out more than I thought. Every morning he's there, running on the treadmill, lifting weights," Wembanyama said of Popovich. "Other than that, he really communicates a lot with me and he doesn't want me to make -- he wants to take care of me and wants me to avoid making some mistakes."

It has been a whirlwind arrival from France for the teen superstar, who was hailed in San Antonio by fans and the focus of attention for days at last week's NBA Draft in New York.

"Every day has been different ever since I stepped in the States," said Wembanyama. "I think I've spent more time with the media than on the court. I'm glad it's beginning to settle down a little bit."

In a blockbuster move, the Atlanta Hawks and the Utah Jazz are getting together for a deal involving Hawks forward John Collins. The deal, which will bring a lot of financial flexibility to the Hawks, was first reported by ESPN on Monday citing sources.

The Hawks owe Collins a whooping $78 million over the next three seasons but the deal will see them creating a $25.3 million exception. It would be the largest exception in the National Basketball Association (NBA) once the deal gets materialized. While the deal cannot become official before July 6, as per ESPN, the Hawks will also have one year to use the money on a player's contract.

The Hawks will also acquire forward Rudy Gay and a future second-round pick from the Jazz.

For the Jazz, this trade could become one of the best things ever to have happened. Collins, once in Utah, will join the line-up which already has All-Star Lauri Markkanen and All-Rookie Walker Kessler. The Jazz also picked up power forward Taylor Hendricks in the recently-concluded NBA Draft from Central Florida. All things considered, Collins' arrival will definitely be a big push to Jazz's offense.

Speaking about the numbers, the 19th overall pick of 2017, &nbsp;Collins has become one of the efficient forwards of the the Eastern Conference. &nbsp;The 2022-23 season saw him scoring 13.1 point on an average per game alongside averaging 6.5 rebounds as well.&nbsp;

Collins has played six seasons with the Hawks after making his debut in 2017. Overall, Collins averages 15.8 points and 8 rebounds per game in his 364 games. His best season, however, came in 2019-20 for the Hawks when he averaged 21.6 points and 10.1 rebounds per game.&nbsp;

As per ESPN Stat research, Collins is just one of the five players in the league to average 15 points on 55%-plus shooting since 2017. The other players on this list are Giannis Antetokounmpo, Domantas Sabonis, Jonas Valanciunas and Nokial Jokic.

The 2022-23 season saw him scoring 13.1 point on an average per game alongside averaging 6.5 rebounds as well. Collins has played six seasons with the Hawks after making his debut in 2017. Overall, Collins averages 15.8 points and 8 rebounds per game in his 364 games. His best season, however, came in 2019-20 for the Hawks when he averaged 21.6 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. As per ESPN Stat research, Collins is just one of the five players in the league to average 15 points on 55%-plus shooting since 2017. The other players on this list are Giannis Antetokounmpo, Domantas Sabonis, Jonas Valanciunas and Nokial Jokic. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. NBA: Utah Jazz set to acquire Hawks forward John Collins - Report

Naz Reid and Minnesota Timberwolves have agreed on a new deal. Under the new contract, Reid will be paid $42 million in a three-year deal with a player option. The developments were reported by ESPN, citing Reid's agents Sean Kennedy and Jeff Schwartz of Excel Sports Management, on Sunday.

Reid now has a chance to get another contract in the next two years, thanks to a player option for the 2025-26 season. Had it not been for the new deal, Reid would have hit the upcoming free agency as a great prospect after his best season in the NBA.

Reid averaged 11.5 points per game alongside 4.9 rebounds before a wrist fracture ended his season. The Timberwolves certainly missed Reid's presence during the regular season after he was injured as well as in the play-in tournament and the Western Conference playoffs. The Wolves lost to the eventual champions Denver Nuggets in the opening round of the conference playoffs.

Reid, in fact, was behind only 2022 NBA MVP Joel Embiid in scoring the most points in the league after the All-Star break in February. Reid scored 242 points in 312 minutes of playtime as per ESPN's research.&nbsp;

Reid had arrived in Minnesota in 2019 as an undrafted player from LSU and gradually rose in ranks and became an indispensable part of the franchise behind Karl Anthony-Towns and Rudy Gobert.

NBA: Spurs' no. 1 draft pick Victor Wembanyama feeling 'comfortable' in San Antonio

Chicago Bulls guard Lonzo Ball is expected to miss out the entire upcoming 2023-24 NBA season, informed Bulls' executive vice president of basketball operations Artūras Karnišovas. Ball is still recovering from a knee injury which he had in January 2022 and have had three surgeries for the same.

“Going into the offseason, I think our expectation is that he's not coming back next season and he's going to continue on his recovery," said in a press conference on Thursday after the 2023 NBA Draft. "If he comes back, it would be great,” added Karnišovas.

In his latest surgery in March, Ball went in for cartilage transplant - his third procedure in 14 months on the same knee. Karnišovas, although said that he's 'recovering nicely' but 'doesn't think he'll be back next season.'

Ball, who last played on January 14, 2022, suffered a meniscus tear in left-knee during the game against the Golden State Warriors. He had undergone arthroscopic surgery in January 2022 itself and was expected to return in 6-8 weeks but felt discomfort during the rehab. The guard didn't play in rest of the 2021-22 season.

Ahead of the 2022-23 season's start, Ball went under the knife once more in September for arthroscopic debridement in the same knee. The Bulls, however, took decision to not make him return to the court ever in the season as Ball couldn't play without pain.

Ball, who made his debut with the Los Angeles Lakers after being No.2 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans before 2019-20 season. The guard was then traded to the Bulls ahead of the 2021-22 season.

Karnišovas, meanwhile, is confident that Ball will make a return at some point in future. "Eventually you are going to see him on the basketball court," Karnišovas said on Thursday.

NBA: Chicago Bulls' Lonzo Ball expected to miss out entire upcoming season

NBA veteran guard Chris Paul is headed from Washington to the Golden State Warriors in exchange for Jordan Poole, US media reported Thursday as trade dominoes fell ahead of the draft. Hours before the draft was set to confirm French phenomenon Victor Wembanyama's arrival at the San Antonio Spurs, who have the first selection, teams around the league were starting to move talent.

The Wizards, who acquired Paul from the Phoenix Suns in exchange for three-time All-Star Bradley Beal on Sunday, will receive Poole, Ryan Rollins and two future draft picks, San Jose Mercury News reported.

Paul, a 12-time All-Star and a five-team season assists leader, has never won an NBA title in a career that has included spells at New Orleans, the Los Angeles Clippers, Houston, Oklahoma City and for the past three seasons in Phoenix.

Over 18 NBA campaigns Paul has averaged 17.9 points. 9.5 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game.

Other moves reported as the draft approached included the Washington Wizards sending Kristaps Porzingis to Boston in a three-team deal that will send Celtics talisman Marcus Smart to Memphis.

ESPN reported that the Grizzlies sent their first-round pick in the draft -- the 25th overall selection -- to Boston, while the Celtics sent the 35th pick in the draft to the Wizards.

Boston will also send forward Danilo Gallinari and center Mike Muscala to Washington as part of the trade, ESPN reported.

Latvian star Porzingis, the fourth overall selection in the 2015 draft, averaged a career-high 23.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.5 blocks in 65 games last season for the Wizards, who acquired him at the 2022 trade deadline from the Dallas Mavericks.

The Celtics will be hoping adding Porzingis to a lineup already featuring All-Stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown helps them again challenge for a title, after falling to the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals in 2022 and to the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference finals this season.

But life without Smart will be a big adjustment for Boston. In nine years with the club, Smart was a key motivator. The longest-tenured player on the roster, he was also a versatile defender.

The Grizzlies will be hoping he'll provide them with the same heart as they seek to bounce back from a first-round playoff exit to the Los Angeles Lakers and the suspension of star Ja Morant over the first 25 games of next season.

NBA Draft: Warriors set to trade Jordan Poole to Wizards for veteran Chris Paul - Reports

France's Victor Wembanyama was chosen with the top pick in the NBA Draft by the San Antonio Spurs on Thursday, sparking wild celebrations as the Texas club reveled in landing the gifted teenager seen as a once-in-a-generation talent. The 7ft 4in (2.24m) 19-year-old hugged family members as the Spurs confirmed a decision which had been a mere formality ever since San Antonio were handed the No.1 selection in the Draft last month.

"Just accomplishing something that I've been dreaming about my whole life," Wembanyama said after his No.1 status was announced by NBA commissioner Adam Silver at the Barclays Center in New York. "Hearing that sentence from Adam Silver, I've dreamed of it so much - I've gotta cry," he added.

Wembanyama is widely regarded as a transformational talent, who arrives in the NBA as the most coveted No. 1 pick since LeBron James entered the league in 2003.
In San Antonio, Spurs fans packed into the team's 19,000-capacity AT&amp;T Center to watch the draft ceremony on a giant screen and roared with delight as Wembanyama's selection was confirmed.

Celebrations also erupted in the streets of the Texas city, with fans honking car horns in celebration of Wembanyama's selection.&nbsp;

"My message to them is I'm going to give 100 percent, make all that's in my power to make this franchise win, to have impact on the franchise and the fan base and the community," Wembanyama said.

Wembanyama has cut a relaxed figure since arriving in the United States earlier this week, brushing off the soaring hype that has surged in the build-up to the draft.&nbsp;

On Thursday, the Frenchman, wearing a dark green suit, happily signed autographs for fans in the minutes before the draft ceremony got under way.

In an interview with ESPN before his selection, Wembanyama said he was relishing the challenge of being a star both on and off the court.

<h2>- More than basketball -</h2>

"I know I can bring so much more than just basketball to a franchise," Wembanyama said. "My goal is always going to be to win titles, obviously. But also to the community, the franchise, to the fan base I know I can bring so much more."

Wembanyama will begin his NBA career under the watchful eye of Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, the widely revered 74-year-old who has led San Antonio to five NBA Championships since taking over in 1996.

"We're thrilled that we're able to bring Victor on board," Popovich said at a press conference in San Antonio on Thursday. "Anybody would be excited about getting the number one pick. I'm very excited. You don't want me to jump and down, or put on a show do you? I'd do a somersault but I'd be out for three months."

Popovich meanwhile brushed off invitations to compare Wembanyama with some of the greats of NBA history.

"I don't compare players, that'll never happen," Popovich said. "He's Victor -- and that's who I want him to be, and that's who myself and my staff will coach."

Wembanyama meanwhile earned a congratulatory message from France's President Emmanuel Macron.

"You're already making us dream...no doubt about it: you'll change the game," Macron wrote on Twitter.

With his potentially dominant blend of size and skill, Wembanyama has already drawn a legion of admirers across the NBA before even setting foot in the league.

LeBron James says Wembanyama's skillset makes him less a "unicorn" and "more like an alien."

"No one has ever seen someone as tall as he is and as fluid and as graceful as he is on the floor," James said last year.&nbsp;

"He's for sure a generational talent."

If Wembanyama manages to live up to the hype, he could conceivably be one of the faces of the NBA for years to come, with the likes of stars such as James, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant all well into the final phase of their playing careers.

NBA officials, meanwhile, say there is already evidence of a "Wembanyama effect", citing spikes on streaming platforms and social media.

"Victor is an incredibly promising young player who seemingly has all the attributes of a true game-changer," NBA deputy commissioner Mark Tatum said.

In an interview with ESPN before his selection, Wembanyama said he was relishing the challenge of being a star both on and off the court. - More than basketball - "I know I can bring so much more than just basketball to a franchise," Wembanyama said. "My goal is always going to be to win titles, obviously. But also to the community, the franchise, to the fan base I know I can bring so much more." Wembanyama will begin his NBA career under the watchful eye of Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, the widely revered 74-year-old who has led San Antonio to five NBA Championships since taking over in 1996. "We're thrilled that we're able to bring Victor on board," Popovich said at a press conference in San Antonio on Thursday. "Anybody would be excited about getting the number one pick. I'm very excited. You don't want me to jump and down, or put on a show do you? I'd do a somersault but I'd be out for three months." Popovich meanwhile brushed off invitations to compare Wembanyama with some of the greats of NBA history. "I don't compare players, that'll never happen," Popovich said. "He's Victor -- and that's who I want him to be, and that's who myself and my staff will coach." Wembanyama meanwhile earned a congratulatory message from France's President Emmanuel Macron. "No one has ever seen someone as tall as he is and as fluid and as graceful as he is on the floor," James said last year. "He's for sure a generational talent." "Victor is an incredibly promising young player who seemingly has all the attributes of a true game-changer," NBA deputy commissioner Mark Tatum said. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Washington Wizards forward Kyle Kuzma has decided not to take his $13 million player option. Kuzma instead, has decided to become a free agent, reported ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski on Tuesday citing sources.

The decision will make Kuzma one of the prominent names in the upcoming free agency. The forward, who had won the NBA Championship in 2019-20 with the Lakers, had joined the Wizards in 2021-22. Kuzma had his best season in 2022-23, scoring 21.2 points per game on an average along with 7.2 rebounds as well. Kuzma made his NBA debut in 2017-18.

The player, however, isn't averse to staying in Washington, as he had told reporters in April this year.

"It's 100 per cent an option. ... I've had a great time here," Kuzma had said about staying in Washington. "I've developed my game significantly here, and there's good people here. I'd be a fool to say it's not an option for me," he had added.

Kuzma, who started with the Lakers in 2017, averaged 16 points per game in his rookie year. The No. 27 pick in the 2017 NBA draft scaled his game up in his second season with nearly 19 points per game on average. The youngster, however, went into the shadows after Anthony Davis joined the Lakers. Kuzma was eventually traded to Washington as part of the Russell Westbrook trade.

Talking about what he expects from his next team, Kuzma had said in April that he's just looking to get better every year.

"I'm trying to get better every year," Kuzma said in April. "It's not about money, I'm going to get paid regardless anywhere [I go] and here, too. It's about can I come into work every day and be the best version of myself, can I help lead guys, can I make other players better, can I light up rooms? All those things matter when you're trying to be successful," Kuzma had said.

NBA: Washington Wizards' Kyle Kuzma declines player option, to hit free agency - Report

The 2023 NBA Finals runner-up Miami Heat are now shifting their focus on getting veteran Portland Trail Blazers point guard Damian Lillard. The change in stance comes after Heat failed to get Bradley Beal from the Washington Wizards. According to an ESPN report, Beal would be going to the Phoenix Suns, joining Kevin Durant and Devin Booker.

Heat, on the other hand, are looking for a star player to join Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo after failing to win their second NBA Finals in four years. As per the Bleacher Report and TNT's Chris Haynes, Lillard is someone Heat thinks can become the last piece of their puzzle.

Lillard has been in trade rumours in recent years. The seven-time All-Star player, however, has not been allowed to be a part of the free agency by the Blazers as they delay a potential rebuild. Lillard, too, has insisted on staying in Portland but without the rebuild.

The veteran guard, although, has shown interest in joining the Miami Heat or Brooklyn Nets in case of a hypothetical trade. NBA: Heat shift focus on Damian Lillard after failing to get Bradley Beal

NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain's jersey which he wore during his rookie league season in 1959-60 was sold at a record price of $1.792 million on Saturday. The iconic jersey, which Chamberlain wore for the Philadelphia Warriors, is now the most expensive game-worn pre-1980 NBA item ever sold. The jersey was sold with SCP auctions.

The jersey, as per photo-matching analysis, was worn by Chamberlain at every Philadelphia Warriors home game, some neutral contests and five playoff games as well. The uniform was analysed and authenticated by MeiGray Group, Resoluation Photomatching (ResMatch) and Sports Investors Authentication (SIA).&nbsp;

The uniform also got an additional letter from Mears Authentication, grading the Chamberlain jersey with perfect A10. Many authenticators have also verified that the stains on the jersey were formed by Chamberlain's blood from his playing days.

Chamberlain's rookie season was itself an iconic one. He had smashed the then-regular-season points record of Bob Petit just 56 games into the season with his tally of 2,707 points.

Chamberlain had won both the awards for 1959-60 season: NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Rookie of the Year (ROY). He was first player to do so in the history of NBA. The two honours have been won in the same season only by Wes Unseld in 1969 for the Baltimore Bullets since then.

Chamberlain became a folklore in the NBA after making his debut in 1959-60. He previously played for the Harlem Globetrotters after dropping out of his senior year from University of Kansas. Chamberlain went on to scored 31,419 points in NBA - a record before Kareem Abdul-Jabbar surpassed him in 1984.&nbsp;

The record for most points in NBA currently rests with LeBron James who took over the spot from Abdul-Jabbar in 2023. LeBron currently leads the points tally with 38,652 points and counting.

NBA: Wilt Chamberlain's rookie season jersey fetches record sum at auction

In what could be a blockbuster deal, the Washington Wizards and Phoenix Suns are in talks to carry out a trade which may see three-time All-Star guard Bradley Beal joining the Suns. The trade developments, which could see the Wizards getting Chris Paul, Landry Shamet, multiple second-round picks and a pick swap, were reported by ESPN citing sources.

"This was an extremely complicated process with so many different hurdles to get through, and (Wizards owner) Ted Leonsis and (Wizards president) Michael Winger were unbelievable partners in making this happen," Beal's agent, Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports, said while talking to ESPN. "From the day that Ted drafted Brad, he has been by our side along with (former general managers) Ernie Grunfeld and Tommy Sheppard. They've always had Brad's back in every way and now we have experienced the exact same thing with Ted and Michael Winger. We are extremely grateful."

The trade, if materialised, will make the Suns an immediate title contender. Once the deal is announced, which could takes days as per the ESPN report, it will see Beal joining a roster which already has Kevin Durant and Devin Booker.

The reason behind the delay in announcing the deal is to give the Wizards ample time to find a contender for veteran Chris Paul in a possible three-team deal, said&nbsp;sources to ESPN. In a scenario where a potential title-contending team can't be found for Paul, there could be an added clause in the contract by the Wizards, allowing Paul to become a free agent.

Beal, who made his debut in NBA with the Wizards in the 2012-13 season, has spent all his career with them. In his 11-year stint at Washington, Beal has appeared in 695 games and has scored 22.1 points on average. He has made a trip to the postseason five times in the last decade, averaging 23.5 points in 45 games.

NBA: Suns in talks to bring in Bradley Beal from Wizards in blockbuster deal - Report

Memphis Grizzlies player Ja Morant has been suspended for 25 games from the start of 2023-24 season, announced the NBA on Friday. The suspension comes after the NBA found Morant's conduct detrimental to the league. The Grizzlies had also suspended Morant from team activities on May 14 after a video went viral on social media in which the player could be seen brandishing a firearm.

Notably, Morant was suspended in March earlier this year for the same sort of conduct. The NBA had banned the Grizzlies' star for eight games after he was seen holding a handgun in an Instagram Live at a club in Denver area while being intoxicated.

"Ja Morant's decision to once again wield a firearm on social media is alarming and disconcerting given his similar conduct in March for which he was already suspended eight games," said NBA commissioner Adam Silver in a statement. "The potential for other young people to emulate Ja's conduct is particularly concerning. Under these circumstances, we believe a suspension of 25 games is appropriate and makes clear that engaging in reckless and irresponsible behavior with guns will not be tolerated," the statement further read.

As part for the retribution, Morant, who is due to make $33.5 million this season, will lose around $7.5 &nbsp;million or $300,000 approximately per game. He would also be not able to take part in any public activity of team or the league.&nbsp;

The suspension also has mentioned conditions for return as well, informed the league.

"For Ja, basketball needs to take a back seat at this time," added Silver. "Prior to his return to play, he will be required to formulate and fulfill a program with the league that directly addresses the circumstances that led him to repeat this destructive behavior."

Morant, following the suspension from the league, issued a statement and said that he realizes how much hurt he has caused and apologized to the NBA, to his team, teammate, city of Memphis and other parties.

"I've had time to reflect and I realize how much hurt I've caused," Morant said in hi Friday statement. "I want to apologize to the NBA, the Grizzlies, my teammates and the city of Memphis. To Adam Silver, Zach Kleiman and Robert Pera -- who gave me the opportunity to be a professional athlete and have supported me -- I'm sorry for the harm I've done. To the kids who look up to me, I'm sorry for failing you as a role model. I promise I'm going to be better. To all of my sponsors, I'm going to be a better representation of our brands. And to all of my fans, I'm going to make it up to you, I promise.

"I'm spending the offseason and my suspension continuing to work on my own mental health and decision making. I'm also going to be training so that I'm ready to go when I can be back on the court. I know my teammates are going to hold it down and I'm so sorry I won't be out there with you at the beginning of the season. I hope you'll give me the chance to prove to you over time I'm a better man than what I've been showing you," added the suspended player.

Also Read: Lionel Messi READY and EAGER for Inter Miami challenge in MLS "Ja Morant's decision to once again wield a firearm on social media is alarming and disconcerting given his similar conduct in March for which he was already suspended eight games," said NBA commissioner Adam Silver in a statement. "The potential for other young people to emulate Ja's conduct is particularly concerning. Under these circumstances, we believe a suspension of 25 games is appropriate and makes clear that engaging in reckless and irresponsible behavior with guns will not be tolerated," the statement further read. As part for the retribution, Morant, who is due to make $33.5 million this season, will lose around $7.5 million or $300,000 approximately per game. He would also be not able to take part in any public activity of team or the league. The suspension also has mentioned conditions for return as well, informed the league. "For Ja, basketball needs to take a back seat at this time," added Silver. "Prior to his return to play, he will be required to formulate and fulfill a program with the league that directly addresses the circumstances that led him to repeat this destructive behavior." Morant, following the suspension from the league, issued a statement and said that he realizes how much hurt he has caused and apologized to the NBA, to his team, teammate, city of Memphis and other parties. The eighth-seeded Heat have made a habit of comebacks and upsets during their run to the finals, but they again looked clear second best against Michael Malone's outstanding team.

Questions had been asked of the Nuggets after they lost game two on their home court, but they leave Miami with two road victories and need one win from three games to clinch the crown.

Denver were up by four at the half, but as in Wednesday's encounter they took a firm of grip of proceedings during the third quarter where they moved 13 points ahead.

The Nuggets had to cope without Jokic for a five minute spell in the fourth quarter when he was benched by Malone after picking up a fifth foul.

But Miami failed to take advantage, continuing to miss baskets on transition plays and unable to exploit the lack of the Serbian's presence in the paint.

Bruce Brown delivered down the stretch, ending with 21 points on eight of 11 shooting from the field as the Nuggets raced towards the finish line.

"Today was a team effort. I can't even name one person," said Denver guard Jamal Murray. "Everybody locked in.

NBA Finals 2023: Denver Nuggets move within a win of first NBA title, beat Miami 108-95 to take 3-1 lead

The Phoenix Suns are all set to hire Utah Jazz's associate general manager David Fizdale as an assistant coach. The developments were told to ESPN by sources, who said that the front office executive is being offered a substantial money in the deal.

Fizdale would join the staff with associate head coach Kevin Young, whom the Suns made the NBA's highest-paid assistant with a $2 million-plus per year salary. And, this was done before making the commitment, a substantially big financial commitment to Fizdale.

The Suns made the move to support their new head coach veteran Frank Vogel whom they hired after firing Monty Williams. As for this NBA history, Fitzdale has been with the New York Knicks in head coach capacity and with the Memphis Grizzlies for some time in head coach capacity for part of four seasons which also included a Western Conference playoff berth as well. He is overall 71-134 as a head coach.

Fitzdale has also spent eight years as an assistant coach where he was part of the two championship seasons. He also had spent 2011-12 season as an assistant to Vogel at the Los Angeles Lakers.

The sources also informed ESPN that the Jazz were very interested in keeping Fitzdale in Utah where he had made instant impact after joining in June last year. The financial consideration, however, proved too much for Utah and so did the chance to coach stalwarts Kevin Durant and Devin Booker.

Notably, the Suns, who were exited this postseason without making it to the West Finals, are a strong contender for conference title next year.
