Indian politician Rahul Gandhi has been convicted by a court in Gujarat's Surat city in a criminal defamation case filed against him for his alleged 'Modi surname' remarks.

Indian politician Rahul Gandhi has been convicted by a court in Gujarat's Surat city in a criminal defamation case filed against him for his alleged 'Modi surname' remarks. The court sentenced Gandhi to two years in jail while imposing a fine of Rs 15,000 ($183), under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 499 (defamation), 500 (punishment for defamation). After Gandhi's lawyers appealed, his sentence has been suspended and bail granted to move an appeal against the conviction in under 30 days. Chief Judicial Magistrate HH Verma heard the final arguments last week and pronounced his decision on Thursday (March 23). Reportedly, Gandhi was present in the court when the sentencing was announced. The Indian MP from Wayanad, a district in the southern Indian state of Kerala made the alleged remarks while addressing a rally at Kolar in Karnataka ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. “Why all the thieves, be it Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi or Narendra Modi, have Modi in their names,” remarked the Congress leader. ALSO READ | Rahul pleads not guilty in 'why all thieves share Modi surname' defamation case Afterwards, Gujarat BJP MLA Purnesh Modi filed a criminal defamation suit, arguing that the former INC president defamed the entire Modi community with his statements. "There is a large number of people with Modi surname. Does it mean all members of the Modi community are thieves? He has defamed the community and also me as I carry the surname," said Purnesh Modi. "This is why we have moved a complaint (against Gandhi) in a Surat court under IPC sections 499 and 500," he added. After the court hearings began, the Gandhi scion pleaded not guilty and filed an application for a permanent exemption. India has shown the world democracy can deliver: Indian PM Modi

United States President Joe Biden is planning to host a state dinner for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi this summer at the White House, said a Bloomberg report citing unnamed Washington officials.

The state dinner might take place in either June or July, but there is no confirmation on the timing. An official comment in this regard is awaited.

If it takes place, this will be the third dinner for President Biden, after the one he hosted for French President Emmanuel Macron in December, and the other one for South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol scheduled for April 26.

The formal state visit reflects the further strengthening of the US-India relationship, which has taken new heights recently as the Biden administration shifts focus towards for a free Indo-Pacific to counter China’s growing influence.

Biden and Modi are also scheduled to meet in India for the G20 summit in September in the capital New Delhi, where the topic of discussion will largely veer towards the Russia-Ukraine war.

Though there is no official confirmation whether Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend the gathering, Bloomberg, quoting Russian officials, earlier this month reported that the summit will likely see the attendance of the 70-year-old leader.

Both leaders are also expected to meet in Australia in May at the Quad summit along with the leaders of Australia and Japan.

Last Friday, India and the US on Friday signed a pact on setting up a semiconductor supply chain and innovation partnership in India, and establishing a semiconductor sub-committee under the framework of the India-US Commercial Dialogue.

The cooperation on semiconductors comes against the backdrop of the shortage of such chips, which had serious consequences and caused supply disruption in automobiles and electronics in both countries, particularly after the outbreak of COVID-19.

India: PM Modi to travel to Japan, Papua New Guinea and Australia in May

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has said his country will not tolerate attacks on Hindu temples and religious places after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue of vandalism of Hindu temples in the Down Under country.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has said his country will not tolerate attacks on Hindu temples and religious places after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue of vandalism of Hindu temples in the Down Under country. "I gave him (PM Modi) the assurance that Australia is a country that respects people's faith. That we don't tolerate the sort of extreme actions and attacks that we've seen on religious buildings, be they Hindu temples, mosques, synagogues, or churches," Albanese was quoted as saying by PTI. The Indian PM on Friday, had raised the matter during a joint press conference, breaking away from the bonhomie of the entire tour to express his concern. Modi described the attacks on Hindu temples as a 'matter of regret'. "The Indian community is making a significant contribution to the society and economy of Australia. It is a matter of regret that reports have come regularly from Australia in the last few weeks about attacks on temples," said PM Modi. I have shared these feelings and concerns of ours with Prime Minister Albanese. And he has assured me that the safety of the Indian community is a special priority for him. Our teams will be in regular touch on this topic, and will cooperate as much as possible," he added. The Australian PM was on a four-day India visit and held several key bilateral talks with the Indian side. In his closing remarks, Albanese said the two countries were working towards a Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement. Albanese added that he was hopeful that the agreement will be finalised by the end of this year. The highlight of the trip, however, was the visit by the two leaders to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat ahead of the start of the fourth Border Gavaskar Test match between India and Australia. Indian PM Modi to travel to US in June for a bilateral visit: Sources

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to flip the coin for the final Test match between India and Australia in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The final Test to be played in Ahmedabad will start on Thursday, March 9 with India leading the four-match series 2-1. It is also reported that Australia PM Anthony Albanese will be in attendance for the toss. The latter is on a four-day official visit to India and will be attending Day 1 of the contest in Ahmedabad.

PM Modi and Anthony Albanese to flip the coin

PM Modi and his Australian counterpart will be in attendance on the opening day of the fourth Test on Thursday. In a radio interview with NOVA 93.7 Perth ahead of his ongoing visit to India, Albanese confirmed to the hosts, Nat Locke and Shaun Mcmanus, that he and PM Modi will be at the toss for the Ahmedabad Test.

"There is a lot of pressure on because myself and Prime Minister Modi are tossing the coin," read a transcript of Albanese's radio interview on the PM's official website.

However, the Australian PM did not say if it will be him or PM Modi who will toss the coin.

To a question by the host, Nat, on "how do two people toss one coin", the Australian PM said, "I have no idea how it is going to work. But he is the home Prime Minister. So, I think he will be in charge."

Banners of Prime Minister Modi and his Australian counterpart have come up at the Narendra Modi stadium ahead of the final Test.

Earlier, Australian High Commissioner to India, Barry O'Farrell, told ANI that the Australian Prime Minister will watch Day 1 of the fourth Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar series along with PM Modi on March 9.

"One of the things that bind both countries is cricket and it will be great to see the leaders of India and Australia on Day One of the match in Ahmedabad," the Australian High Commissioner said.

G20 meet: Members have shown they can deliver results without Russia & China, says Antony Blinken

After the results of assembly polls of three northeastern states were declared on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the election results depict people's faith in democracy, adding that the Northeast is neither far from Delhi nor from ‘our heart’.

Prime Minister Modi received a warm welcome at BJP headquarters in the national capital. PM urged the workers gathered at the occasion to turn on the flashlight of their phones in honour of the people of the northeast. Addressing party workers at BJP headquarters, PM Modi said, "The Northeast is neither far from Delhi nor from our heart."

"The election results depict people's faith in democracy. I humbly thank the people of Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya. These people have blessed the BJP and our allies. Besides, I congratulate the BJP workers of these three states. It is not easy to work in the northeast, and therefore a special thank is due to them," he said.

"Today's results are the outcome of the hard work of all BJP workers. Today's election and these election results have many messages for the country and for the world," the PM added.

In reference to earlier times, he said, "There was not much discussion in Delhi and other parts of the country when the results were out from the northeast region. The discussion was about the violence during the elections."

The PM said winning the hearts of the people of the Northeast is a big win for him and the time has come for peace, prosperity and development in the northeast region.

"By frequently visiting the Northeast, I won their heart. And it is a big win for me. I was satisfied that the people of the Northeast are no longer ignored. It is a time to create new history. When I visited the Northeast recently, someone congratulated me on the half-century. When I inquired about it, I was told that I had visited the Northeast 50 times," he said.

The PM said BJP gave a new model of politics in India. For BJP, the country and the countrymen come first. "Many political analysts are trying to understand the reason for the victory of the BJP. Some of our well-wishers want to know the reason. The reason is `Triveni`. It means the combination of three streams. The first power is the work of the BJP governments, the second one is the work style of the BJP and the last one is the BJP work," he said.

"Earlier in Tripura, there was a situation where even the flag of another party could not be hoisted. If someone tried to do it, he was made to bleed. What a big change we have seen in these elections this time," the PM added.

"Now we are seeing the Northeast moving in a new direction," he said.

Prime Minister said BJP government is committed to the empowerment of women. Through various flagship schemes, he said the government ensured the empowerment of the women of the Northeast.

Even after seven decades of independence, many villages of the northeast did not have electricity. Previous governments knew that it was a difficult task to electrify those villages, and therefore they turned a blind eye towards them, he stated.

Attacking the Congress party, PM Modi said, "Today`s results have exposed Congress`s thinking about the Northeast. Congress claimed that these are small states and insignificant. It is an insult to the mandate and the people of these states."

"At such a time, some people are aspiring to dig Modi`s grave. But wherever there is a chance, the lotus keeps on blooming...It keeps on blooming. Some people are engaged in identifying fanatics...They also do dishonesty with fanaticism. These fanatics say - `Mar jaa Modi...mar jaa Modi...Desh keh raha hai mat jaa Modi," Prime Minister added.

With the declaration of results for the Tripura Assembly polls on Thursday, BJP returned to power in the state by winning an absolute majority. According to the Election Commission of India, BJP won 32 seats with a vote share of around 39 per cent. Tipra Motha Party came second by winning 13 seats. Communist Party of India (Marxist) got 11 seats while Congress bagged three seats.

The Indigenous People`s Front of Tripura (IPFT) managed to open its account by winning one seat. The CPI(M) and the Congress, arch rivals in Kerala, came together in the Northeast this time in a bid to oust the BJP from power. The combined vote share of CPI(M) and Congress remained around 33 per cent.

Chief Minister Manik Saha defeated Congress` Asish Kumar Saha from the Town Bordowali seat by a margin of 1,257 votes.

In the 60-member Tripura assembly, the majority mark is 31. The BJP, which had never won a single seat in Tripura before 2018, stormed to power in the last election in alliance with IPFT and ousted the Left Front which had been in power in the border state for 35 years since 1978. The BJP contested 55 seats and its ally, IPFT, on six seats. But both allies had fielded candidates in the Ampinagar constituency in the Gomati district.

The Left contested on 47 and Congress on 13 seats respectively. Of the total 47 seats, the CPM contested 43 seats while the Forward Bloc, Communist Party of India (CPI) and Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) contested one seat each.

The CPI(M)-led Left Front ruled the state for nearly four decades, with a gap between 1988 and 1993, when the Congress was in power but now both parties joined hands with the intention to oust BJP from power. In Nagaland, BJP secured 12 seats, Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) won 25 seats and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) bagged seven seats. National People`s Party (NPP) won five seats. Naga Peoples Front, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) and Republican Party of India (Athawale) won two seats each. Nitish Kumar`s Janata Dal (United) got one seat.

In Meghalaya, the National People`s Party (NPP) won 26 seats, United Democratic Party (UDP) bagged 11 seats and Trinamool Congress got five seats. BJP, People`s Democratic Front and Hill State People`s Democratic Party bagged two seats each. Congress managed to get five seats while the Voice of the People Party got four seats. Meloni said India's G20 presidency could play a central role in the de-escalation of hostilities, referring to the Russia-Ukraine war. "We hope that India having a G20 presidency can play a central role in facilitating a negotiating process for the cessation of hostilities (in Ukraine). Keeping the multilateral community together is important and we hope the Indian presidency can do it even more," said Meloni in a joint presser. "PM Modi knows he can rely on us, on our cooperation for the G20 summit, to further enhance our relationship. I believe there is a lot we can do together." The Italian PM also heaped praise on PM Modi and called him one of the 'most loved' leaders going around. "The approval rating that PM Modi has reached shows he is one of the most famous world leaders. PM Modi is the most loved one of all (leaders) around the world. This has really proven that he has been a major leader and congratulations for that," she added. PM Modi reflected on Meloni's statement and said, "India has made it clear from the beginning that the Ukraine dispute can be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy." He also announced the start of a major defence technology exchange between the two countries. "Today, we're announcing the establishment of a 'Start Up Bridge' between India and Italy. We welcome this. "Since the beginning of the developments in Ukraine, India has laid emphasis on resolving this dispute through dialogue and diplomacy. India is ready to contribute to any peace process," Modi said while addressing the briefing.

Deepening of trade and defence ties remains in focus as Scholz visits India for the first time after assuming charge as the European nation's leader in December 2021. His arrival, a day after the first anniversary of the Ukraine war, signals Delhi's growing importance to Western powers, seeking backing for their opposition to Russia's invasion.

In his remarks, Modi also laid emphasis on action against terrorism and climate crisis. "There is active cooperation between India and Germany in the fight against terrorism and separatism. Both countries also agree that concrete action is necessary to end cross-border terrorism," he added.

"Apart from being our largest trading partner in Europe, Germany is also an important source of investment in India. In the last few years. India and Germany are working together on green and sustainable partnerships, climate action and sustainable development goals, green hydrogen and biofuel," Modi underlined, stressing that "the strong ties are based on shared democratic values and deep understanding of each other's interests."

We have been cooperative; we have been discussing matters. I am pleased that India has the presidency of G20 this year."

The two world leaders last met at the G7 summit in June 2022. "Ukraine-Russia is a major catastrophe because we know this war violates the economic principles that we all agreed to. The world is suffering because of the consequences of Russia's aggression," Scholz pointed out.

India ready to contribute to any peace process for resolving Ukraine crisis, says PM Modi

In February 2022, about 11 weeks after New Delhi and Moscow signed a joint statement titled ‘India-Russia Partnership for Peace, Progress and Prosperity’, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced 'special military operations' in the predominantly Russian-speaking Donbas region of Ukraine.

"I hope you hear me," Putin said on February 24, 2022, pointing towards the West. "Anyone who considers interfering from outside, you will face consequences greater than you have ever faced in history," he said while declaring the offensive which, according to a US military estimate, has resulted in 100,000 military casualties on both Russian and Ukrainian sides so far.

Putin’s declaration put countries with whom Moscow shares ‘special’ or ‘privileged’ bilateral ties – such as India, the United Arab Emirates, Israel and Turkey among others –- in a rare geopolitical tight spot. For months, Russia was holding a gun to Ukraine’s head, citing ‘security challenges’ such as an eastward expansion of NATO despite West’s past diplomatic assurances against the same.

That day, Putin pulled the trigger, shooting much of the Russian diplomatic capital in the West, and sending combative shockwaves across the Global South. The term Global South has come to be associated with the countries that were left out of the industrialisation wave, mostly the nations in the regions of Latin America, Africa, Asia and Oceania.

At its centre continues to be a geopolitically rising India, with a long history of bilateral bonhomie with Russia and the erstwhile Soviet Union.

India: A sane voice amid the war cry

India's careful geopolitical navigation was visible on February 23rd when New Delhi abstained from a non-binding UN vote that called upon Moscow to end hostilities against Kyiv. India's permanent representative to the UN Ruchira Kamboj quoted Prime Minister Narendra Modi while asserting that "no solution can ever arrive at the cost of human lives". India, while recognising the "inherent limitations" of the said resolution, added that it is "constrained to abstain" and that only viable way out of the conflict are "dialogue and diplomacy".

India's voice has been that of restraint, that maintains its signature strategic autonomy, while calling for the ‘cessation of hostilities’ and upholding of the UN charter, according to experts. At the same time, India’s reaction to the Russian military action has been rooted in protecting New Delhi’s national interests with its desire to reduce hostilities between the two sides, they say.

“India has been following the buildup of tensions for the last several years and always knew that this was no ordinary conflict or war in the classical sense. It is a multilayered conflict with deep roots in history,” said Pankaj Saran, India’s former deputy National Security Advisor (2018- 2021), a job he took soon after returning from Moscow as India’s envoy (2016-2018). Saran is currently the convenor of New Delhi-based Centre for Research on Security and Strategic Issues.

“The issues involved relate to the fundamentals of the European security architecture,” Saran told WION, referring to the security implications of the US-led transatlantic alliance.

Anil Wadhwa, India’s former envoy to Italy, Poland and Lithuania, Thailand, and Oman, added that New Delhi’s response to the war has been characterised by ‘restraint’, that is, “condemnation of the civilian killings and abstention from the votes on the UN resolutions by the United States and West”.

“This is not an isolated position,” Wadhwa said, while referring to the multilateral posturing of the countries such as the UAE, South Africa, Israel and Turkey in relation to the ongoing war.

During the one year of war, in its abstentions from the UN votes condemning Russian actions against Ukraine, India has often found itself in the company of South Africa and China – two of its BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) partners. Individually, despite their bilateral issues, both New Delhi and Beijing have courted Moscow to ‘end the war’. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s famous ‘today’s era is not of war’ pitch to Vladimir Putin found its place in the Bali G20 declaration, shadowing a much-complicated geopolitical challenge as New Delhi took over the G20 presidency — during what has now become the second year of war in Ukraine.

Russia-Ukraine war anniversary: India's 'mature' geopolitical navigation amid pressure is in spotlight

Virtually addressing the first G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) meeting in Bengaluru, Prime Minister Modi said, "Food and energy security have become major concerns across the world. Even the financial viability of many countries is threatened by unsustainable debt levels."

"We are also witnessing rising geo-political tensions in different parts of the world. There are disruptions in global supply chains," he added, the news agency PTI reported.

India slams George Soros for his controversial 'regime change' remarks

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephonic conversation with US President Joe Biden on Tuesday and welcomed the landmark deal between Air India and Boeing as a “shining example of mutually beneficial co-operation”, as per media reports.

The deals for a record purchase of 470 jets from Airbus and Boeing were unveiled by Air India on Tuesday, accelerating the national emblem's rebirth under its new owners Tata Group as the United States and Europe appreciated the deepening political and economic ties with India.

The provisional deals include 250 planes from Airbus and 220 from Boeing, breaking previous records of any such deal by a single airline as Air India competes with domestic giant IndiGo to provide service to a nation that will soon become the largest population in the world.

Plans are on for Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's India visit in March

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday (February 8) replied to the motion of thanks on President Droupadi Murmu's address in the Lok Sabha, the Lower House of Parliament, amid sloganeering by opposition leaders for a discussion over the Adani issue. Before beginning his speech, some opposition parliamentarians staged a walkout over the issue.

Modi started his speech by saying, "In her visionary address, the President guided us and crores of Indians. Her presence as the Head of the Republic is historic as well as inspiring for the daughters and sisters of the country."

Modi said that President Murmu enhanced the pride of the tribal community, adding that after several years of independence, there was a sense of pride in the tribal community and an increase in their self-confidence, news agency ANI reported.

He took a veiled dig at Rahul Gandhi from the main opposition Congress, who on Tuesday had accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government of favouring the Adani Group. "I was watching yesterday. After the speeches of a few people, some people were happily saying, "Ye hui na baat" (this is how it should be.) Maybe they slept well and couldn't wake up (on time)," Modi told the Lok Sabha.

The Prime Minister added that following the remarks of such people, the entire 'ecosystem' and their supporters were jubilant.

Hitting out at the Congress further, Modi took a veiled jibe at another senior party leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury over his contentious remarks on President Murmu last year.

"When President's Address was going on, some people avoided it. A tall leader even insulted the President. They displayed hatred against ST. When such things were said on TV, a sense of hatred deep within came out. An attempt was made to save oneself after writing a letter later," Modi said.

He also lashed out at the Congress' tenure as the central government from 2004-2014. "During 10 years of UPA (United Progressive Alliance) govt, inflation was in double digits and hence when something good happens, their sadness increases. In the history of the country's independence, 2004-2014 was full of scams," Modi told the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

The Adani Group has been roiled by days of market turmoil after a report by American short-seller Hindenburg Research last month alleged that the Indian conglomerate engaged in stock manipulation and used tax havens. The report also said that the Adani Group had unsustainable debt.

The conglomerate has denied the allegations, saying it complies with all laws and has made necessary disclosures over time.

On Tuesday, Congress' Rahul Gandhi had questioned the BJP's connections with the Adani Group and had accused Prime Minister Modi of favouring its founder Gautam Adani. Gandhi, who was the first opposition leader to speak during the debate on the motion of thanks to the President`s address in the Lok Sabha, said that the relationship with Gautam Adani began many years ago when Modi was the chief minister of Gujarat.

If he wants to make such allegations, he should bring documentary proof and present it," BJP leader and India's Law Minister Kiren Rijiju told Parliament on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad said that Gandhi's comments were false and shameful. "Rahul Gandhi cannot digest the fact that people had twice elected Narendra Modi as the prime minister and he will again come back in 2024," Prasad said and pointed out that the Adani Group also invested in Congress-led states of Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.

Indian PM Narendra Modi's jacket steals the show. It was made from recycled plastic bottles

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi ignored the Adani row completely in his reply to the motion of thanks on the President's address in parliament on Wednesday.

That despite repeated disruptions from opposition lawmakers' allegations of his close ties with billionaire Gautam Adani.

Over the past few days, the Adani group's stock plunge has sparked protests and arrests, with opposition lawmakers demanding the Prime Minister respond to what they call India's question - why is the government silent on Adani empire's stocks rout and Hindenburg's allegations?

The opposition's questions also concerned the contagion risks from the sharp plunge in Adani firms' share value, especially on the risk to Indian banks and the government-led Life Insurance Corporation's exposure to Adani.

The Indian empire has lost over $110 billion in market value in two weeks since a U.S. short-sellers critical report was published on January 24th.

Concerns about Adani group companies have been raised in various quarters, including lenders' exposure.

But Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das on Wednesday dismissed any risks from Adani on the Indian Banking System.

Das said the strength, size and resilience of the Indian banking system now are much stronger and larger "to be affected by a case like this" about the developments at Adani group.

Since Tuesday, Adani shares have recovered and stalled an eight-day plunge.

The resurgence in Adani group's shares continued on Wednesday after solid earnings releases from the group's firms and the empire's decision to prepay loans totaling over $1.1 billion boosted investor confidence.

In the latest earnings release, Adani Wilmar reported a 16 per cent increase in quarterly profit on higher demand for its cooking oil and packaged foods and said Hindenburg Research's report had no bearing on its operations.

Shares of the group's flagship firm, Adani Enterprises, surged nearly 20 per cent, and Adani Ports and SEZ stocks jumped over 8 per cent.

Adani Power, Adani Transmission, and Adani Wilmar stocks rose 5 per cent on Wednesday. Only two of Adani's listed firms' shares continued their fall.

The group's move to prepay loans restored confidence after some banks stopped accepting Adani's securities as collateral in client trades.

Standard Chartered, Citi and Credit Suisse had assigned zero value to Adani assets as collateral against marginal loans.

Adani Ports is also considering repaying $605 million of loans to release pledged shares and lower capital expenditure by roughly half next year.

That comes after the group on Monday denied media reports that the empire is planning to cut capital expenditure.

Is it a turning point in the Adani vs Hindenburg row?

There is some respite currently, but sustained recovery in Adani stocks is needed to boost investor confidence in the long run.

Adani row: Indian PM ignores the opposition's allegations

Turkey's Ambassador to India Firat Sunel has thanked New Delhi for standing by Turkey in the aftermath of the deadly earthquake in his country. Speaking to WION's diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, the envoy said Prime Minister Narendra Modi acted promptly and dispatched the relief teams. He also thanked India for being a friend in the trying times.

Full interview:

Sidhant Sibal: What is the current situation in your country?

Firat Sunel: I just want to make my first comment, this is not just one earthquake there were two huge earthquakes, magnitude 7 and 7.6 and followed by almost 300 aftershocks. So, the damage is very big, because almost 14 million people are impacted in 10 cities. The devastation is huge, let me tell some actual numbers.

The death toll is almost 3000, more than 15000 injured and 4700 buildings collapsed in the region. So some airports are already closed in the region but other airports in neighbouring the region are open and we use it for humanitarian help.

Sidhant Sibal: Your government must be overwhelmed, if you can talk about the measures taken by your government.

Firat Sunel: Yes, thinking of the extent of the devastation, the size of the region, it is not an easy task. Two huge earthquakes in the same day. There are 15000 search and rescue teams including our health teams. More than 5000 military personnel are there, so are some sanitary facility toilets, bathrooms, field hospitals, crisis management team.

They have been working without any interruption since the first earthquake. We also have some foreign search and rescue teams. There are about 2700, with rescue dogs, out 65 countries in which India is also included.

Sidhant Sibal: How do you see Indian support in the aftermath of the earthquake?

Firat Sunel: We appreciate it. Yesterday I shared it on my Twitter account as well, we have common words in Hindi and Turkish. Dost means friend. In Turkish, there is a proverb, 'dost-dost kara günde belli olur', which means friend in need is a friend indeed. So the friends help each other when they are in need. You may recall, you were the first person to report about Turkey's medical aid in May 2021. During covid time Turkey sent two airplanes loaded with 45 tonnes of medical aid.

Now devastation is huge in Turkey and PM Narendra Modi gave immediate instructions to build a crisis centre and all relevant Indian authorities had a meeting yesterday. I was also there for cooperation, and this is an example of good friendship, and we really appreciate it so much.

India decided to send two planes, a search, and a rescue team. One of them left yesterday in the night-time and has arrived in the country two hours ago with 23 tonnes of equipment and more than 50 search rescue personnel. They are in the region and have started their activities.

In one hour, a second plane is also going to Turkey, this is also a big military aircraft. This is also a huge help for Turkey. We appreciate it very much. We appreciate not only the material help, but also for standing by Turkey. There are lot of messages from PM Modi to EAM Jaishankar.

Sidhant Sibal: It hasn't been very very easy for you as well, you had a sleepless night, coordinating here

Firat Sunel: Yes, you had the right expression, we had a sleepless night. We had to coordinate everything with relevant authorities in India and also in Turkey. Not only me, the whole embassy team as well as the Indian embassy in Turkey spent a sleepless night. They also chad to coordinate. I think we will have more sleepless nights to coordinate this.
