While comparing India with the neighbouring nation, PM Modi said that farmers in the nation get urea sacks for Rs 266 ($3.25), available in Pakistan for about Rs 800 ($9.76), Rs 720 ($8.79) in Bangladesh and Rs 2,100 ($25.63) in China. The Indian prime minister said that the government will not allow farmers to suffer due to the price of urea. He said India can only develop when its villages do, and the government is working to provide villages with every facility available in cities. Opposition slams PM Modi's absence Parliament Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said that PM Modi is not speaking in Parliament and instead making political speeches in Rajasthan. The opposition wants PM Modi to speak on the raging issue of Manipur violence. Kharge said people have now become aware and will fight "this kind of politics". While speaking to the reporters, Kharge said: "Today, people have become aware and they will fight and continue to do so...This means you do not want to talk in Parliament - the temple of democracy, and want to give a political speech in Rajasthan while opening new medical colleges." PM Modi hails India's banking sector as among strongest in world

There was pandemonium during the opening session of the Parliament’s monsoon session on Thursday (July 20) when the debate opened about the Manipur crisis.

Minutes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi made his first remarks over the violence, condemning the horrific incident of two women from Kuki tribe being paraded naked, the opposition tore into the government, with the Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge leading the charge.

Kharge questioned Modi’s “silence” on the violence that gripped India’s northeastern state since the last two months, saying that the prime minister was busy campaigning for elections and completely forgot the northeastern state.

Modi kept mum: Kharge

“The prime minister is silent and he has visited several countries including France, Egypt and others. He is silent on Manipur, he could have called a meeting on Manipur but it seems he has forgotten it," Kharge said.

“Manipur is burning, women are raped, naked, paraded, and horrific violence is taking place. But the PM kept quiet for so long until today (July 20)…he only gave a statement outside the Parliament,” Kharge said while addressing the Rajya Sabha.

The Congress leader said that while people were being robbed and women being gang-raped, Modi forgot Manipur.

"He has time for calling meeting of 38 parties. He could have gone to Manipur as he has adequate security arrangements, whereas Rahul Gandhi has gone without any such facilities."

"He (Modi) is roaming for election campaigning for last 80 days. Do campaigning but he is ignoring the Manipur. He should have sorted out the issue but he is not interested in that and he wants such situation to prevail," the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha said

Parliament adjourned

The session began with a ruckus, forcing both the Houses of the Parliament to be adjourned for the day.

Several opposition leaders were shouting slogans like ‘Manipur Manipur’ and ‘Manipur is burning’ as the Lok Sabha assembled at 2 pm.

Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting feels South African pacer Anrich Nortje is just a couple of spells away from being match ready and expressed optimism over his availability for their next IPL game against Lucknow Super Giants on April 7.

Nortje has been out of competitive cricket since last November's T20 World Cup due to a back and hip injury.

"Nortje bowled 100% this morning (Saturday) in the warm-ups. He has to get through another maybe four or five-over spell at 100% capacity and then I think if he gets clearance from Cricket South Africa, he should be right to go.

"We have got a few more days before our next game, so hopefully he is available for selection for that one," Ponting said at the virtual post-match press conference after losing by 14 runs against Gujarat Titans here on Saturday night.

'Cannot be forgiven': Modi reacts to video of Manipur women paraded naked, two arrested; top court takes note

With less than a year to go for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the battle lines have been drawn between the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition parties. On Tuesday (July 18), during the mega gathering of 26 parties in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru, the opposition leaders decided to name their new coalition as Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance, a clever play on the acronym that reads INDIA.

"Earlier, we were UPA and now all the 26 parties have given a name to the opposition and that is – Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA). Everybody has agreed upon this, and the resolution for the name was passed unanimously," said Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, adding that "well begun" was "half done".

Alliance borne out of political conveniences

The alliance, borne out of political conveniences as well as desperation is possibly the last-ditch attempt by the opposition to cobble together a grouping that can halt the charging juggernaut of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In the last two general elections, the NDA, led by PM Modi has decimated the opposition, rendering the Indian parliament devoid of a challenger that can put the government in dock or disrupt proceedings.

The alliance experiment is delicate — one that will require extreme precision from all opposition parties to pull through. The joint opposition, in its draft agenda, has talked about setting up a committee for drafting the common minimum programme and communication points - the foundation to build upon. Additionally, the alliance is set to discuss seat sharing on a state-to-state basis during its next gathering, set to take place in Mumbai.

Can opposition get over the seat-sharing hurdle?

The seat-sharing formula is the decisive point where most experts feel the alliance will be tested to the hilt. Would West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee be on board with Congress and Left parties contesting elections in the state? Would Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal allow Congress to compete in the capital once again and divide the votes? These are a few of the burning questions that most political pundits and voters are actively seeking answers to.

If a consensus is not found on the issue, the alliance might be dead-on-arrival. However, in the fortunate circumstance that middle ground is found, another challenge quickly stares down the barrel - who will be the prime ministerial candidate?

With less than a year to go for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the battle lines have been drawn between the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition parties.

Alliance borne out of political conveniences The alliance, borne out of political conveniences as well as desperation is possibly the last-ditch attempt by the opposition to cobble together a grouping that can halt the charging juggernaut of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 'Oppn alliance born out of compulsion for grabbing power’: PM Modi blasts new front named ‘INDIA’

Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, the Indian government had approved plans to buy 26 more Rafale jets and another three Scorpene-class submarines. But there was no mention of either of the deals in the joint statement issued last week post the bilateral talks.

Now, the Indian government sources have clarified to WION that the reason why it wasn’t mentioned in the joint statement is because “contracts aren’t put in vision statements”.

The sources on Tuesday (July 18) said that India and France would soon begin negotiations in many areas like price and date of delivery.

“India has made it clear that it wants Rafale fighter jets for the Navy and negotiations in this regard will take place to finalise it,” sources told WION.

The sources said that Rafale wasn’t included in the roadmap because it was for the next 25 years.

Since the Rafale contract would be completed long before 25 years, hence both countries felt that it didn't have to be mentioned in the statement, the sources said.

On the Scorpene deal, the sources said the agreement wasn’t finalised as key aspects of the deal still need to be discussed.

India's PM Modi conferred with France’s highest civilian award by Macron

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on an official two-day visit to France, on Thursday (July 13) lauded French World Cup striker Kylian Mbappe. Talking highly of the young attacker, Modi said Mbappe’s growing presence is felt everywhere and that he is probably more famous among football fans in India than in France.

While addressing the Indian diaspora at the packed La Seine Musicale, Modi called Mbappe a ‘Superhit’ among Indian youth.

"French football player Kylian Mbappe is superhit among the youth in India. Mbappe is probably known to more people in India than in France," said PM Modi during his address.

Following Mbappe’s rise on the international scene since helping his first senior club, AS Monaco, reach the Champions League semis in 2017, rivals Paris Saint Germain (PSG) bought the young French striker on board on loan for a season before sealing his long-term deal for £166 million in 2018.

The same year, Mbappe became a household name after winning the home World Cup with France at just 18 years old. By that time, the former Barcelona winger and star player Neymar had also joined PSG, while a few years later, in 2021, seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi completed the trio at the French club by joining PSG on a two-year deal.

During the FIFA World Cup in Qatar last year, Mbappe starred for France again, helping the side reach the finals on successive occasions. Up against Lionel Messi’s Argentina, Mbappe brought his A-game by scoring a World Cup Final hat-trick, a rare achievement. Though his team fell shy of winning back-to-back WCs, Mbappe won the Golden Boot for his eight goals in the 2022 edition – one ahead of Messi, who scored seven.

With the growing craze of European football in India in the past decade and with millions across the country watching the 2022 World Cup Finale, Mbappe’s amazing feat helped him gain enormous popularity in India.

Mbappe’s club Future stays in limbo

The star striker is on the radar of many top clubs across Europe, with Champions League giants Real Madrid the favourite to bag his services. Following the fallout last season when Mbappe was alleged to have agreed to personal terms with the Spanish club but did a u-turn last moment, Madrid is again back in the race to bag his services.

While nothing concrete is out from both end, latest reports suggest a final decision around the same will be made official soon.

PM Narendra Modi lauds 'Superhit' French striker Kylian Mbappe, says he's more popular in India than in France

On the day Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in France to kick off his two-day visit, the European Parliament adopted a resolution condemning the ruling government over the Manipur violence and urged them to protect the rights of the minorities.

“MEPs [Members of the European Parliament] call on the Indian authorities to allow independent investigations to look into the violence, to tackle impunity and to lift the internet ban,” the legislators in the resolution stated.

The resolution denounced “in the strongest terms nationalistic rhetoric deployed by leading members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)”.

Hours later, India sharply slammed the European leaders, and asked them not to interfere in its internal matters and added that proper steps are being taken to ensure peace in the northeastern state.

The debate on the Manipur clashes was added to the parliament agenda on Wednesday to discuss about cases of breaches of human rights, democracy and the rule of law during its ongoing plenary session in Strasbourg, France.

'India promoting Hindu majoritarianism'

The resolution highlighted the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights’s concern in October 2020 in which it had urged the Indian government to safeguard the rights of human rights defenders, shrinking space for civil society and the accusations made by human rights organisations against the BJP of “divisive ethno-nationalistic policies.”

The resolution said that there have been concerns about “politically motivated, divisive policies that promote Hindu majoritarianism in the area”.

“Whereas violence in India’s Manipur state has erupted along ethnic and religious lines between the mainly Hindu Meitei community and the Christian Kuki tribe, leading to a cycle of violence with over 100 people killed, over 40,000 displaced and the destruction of property and places of worship,” the resolution said.

“Whereas Manipur has previously faced secessionist insurgencies in which serious human rights abuses were committed. Whereas, in the latest round of violence human rights groups have accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led government in Manipur and nationally of implementing divisive ethno-nationalistic policies which oppress in particular religious minorities.”

New Delhi's response

Responding to the resolution, Indian Ministry of External Affair's official spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said that the debate reflects Europe's "colonial mindset", and told them to stop meddling in India's internal matters.

"We have seen that the European Parliament held a discussion on developments in Manipur and adopted a so-called Urgency Resolution. Such interference in India's internal affairs is unacceptable and reflects a colonial mindset."

"Indian authorities at all levels, including the judiciary, are seized of the situation in Manipur and are taking steps to maintain peace and harmony and law and order. The European Parliament would be well advised to utilize its time more productively on its internal issues,” he said

Manipur violence

Violent ethnic clashes between the Kuki and majority Meitei communities since May 3 have paralysed the state, as widespread violence and arson continue to deepen the crisis. At least 150 people have been killed and nearly 60,000 have been displaced.

Whereas, in the latest round of violence human rights groups have accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led government in Manipur and nationally of implementing divisive ethno-nationalistic policies which oppress in particular religious minorities.” India's Manipur state on the boil, Internet snapped since first week of May New Delhi's response Responding to the resolution, Indian Ministry of External Affair's official spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said that the debate reflects Europe's "colonial mindset", and told them to stop meddling in India's internal matters. "We have seen that the European Parliament held a discussion on developments in Manipur and adopted a so-called Urgency Resolution. Such interference in India's internal affairs is unacceptable and reflects a colonial mindset." "Indian authorities at all levels, including the judiciary, are seized of the situation in Manipur and are taking steps to maintain peace and harmony and law and order. The European Parliament would be well advised to utilize its time more productively on its internal issues,” he said Manipur violence Violent ethnic clashes between the Kuki and majority Meitei communities since May 3 have paralysed the state, as widespread violence and arson continue to deepen the crisis. At least 150 people have been killed and nearly 60,000 have been displaced. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE

EU Parliament condemns India over Manipur violence, New Delhi slams 'colonial mindset'

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's two-day visit to France to attend the Bastille Day parade marks a significant milestone in the strengthening relationship between India and France. This is the second time that an Indian leader has been invited as the 'Guest of Honour' to the parade, which is a major event in the French national calendar.

While the visit is an opportunity for PM Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss a range of bilateral issues including defence, trade, and investment, it also celebrates the historical and cultural ties shared by the two countries.

The India-France relationship, which has been steadily strengthening in the recent years, has a long and rich history. From defence cooperation to trade ties and climate action, India and France have worked together on a host of global issues.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit also coincides with the celebration of 25 years of the strategic partnership between India and France. In 1998, the then-French president Jacques Chirac visited India, and the two nations agreed to develop their respective strategic independence by drawing on concrete bilateral cooperation.

One of the key things that bind these two democracies together is also their commitment to promote a multipolar world and defend multilateralism and international law.

As the two countries write a new chapter in strategic partnership, here are six reasons that make France India's top partner in Europe:

1) Historical ties:

The participation of the Indian tri-services contingent at this year's Bastille Day parade is testimony to more than a century-old affiliation and the bond between both the armies. According to India's defence ministry, over 1.3 million Indian soldiers (both from British India and French India) had participated in the World War I. Several of these soldiers fought shoulder-to-shoulder with France's troops in the treacherous trenches on the French soil.

The Indian Memorial at the Neuve Chapelle in northern France, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage during his visit in 2015, commemorates over 4,700 Indian soldiers and labourers who lost their lives on the Western Front during Great War.

2) Defence partnership:

Although France became India's second-largest defence supplier from 2017-2021, it has been a reliable partner for India in the military aircraft domain since the 1950s. From the procurement of the first-generation the Dassault Ouragan fighter, named 'Toofani' in the Indian Air Force (IAF), to the recent submarine and Rafale-M deal — the defence sector has emerged as a crucial pillar of the India-France relationship.

The Dassault Mirage 2000s, which were received in 1985, continue to be India's go-to aircraft whenever it calls for an air strike. The super fighters proved to be a gamechanger as they pounded Pakistani positions on the Kargil hilltops during the 1999 war. The Mirages were also used to carry out airstrikes in Pakistan's Balakot in 2019.

Moreover, France has also been instrumental in assisting India's defence modernisation efforts through technology transfers, enabling indigenous production capabilities, and joint ventures.

3) Supporting India's interests:

France was one of the first P5 countries to stand firmly with India while the world turned away in the wake of Pokhran nuclear tests of 1998, conducted under the prime ministership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Defying the US-led sanctions, France was also among the first countries to sign a civil nuclear pact with India.

In August 2019, after Article 370 was repealed in Jammu and Kashmir, France maintained its position that the abrogation of the special status was India's internal matter.

Moreover, France has reiterated its support for India's bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and for its accession to the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), referring to New Delhi as a "major player" in the global arena.

In addition to publicly condemning terrorism, France and India have also pledged to work with the UN to adopt the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT).

4) Strategic ties:

The relations between New Delhi and Paris is also cherished by a shared desire for strategic autonomy and respect for sovereignty of nations.

In September 2022, India and France agreed to set up an Indo-Pacific trilateral framework to roll out development projects, and expand strategic cooperation, amid challenges posed by Beijing in the region. During the meeting, French foreign minister Catherine Colonna highlighted how both France and India share the same concerns over China's growing influence and their commitment to ensure there was "no imbalance".

Earlier this year, France led a multilateral exercise 'La Pérouse' with the navies of Quad countries - India, US, Australia , Japan- and the UK in the strategic Indian Ocean region, where China is trying to get foothold after wresting control of the strategic Hambantota port in Sri Lanka.

A recent strategic agreement between France and India also allows both countries' warships access to the other's naval stations across the Indian Ocean. The Indian Navy now has access to significant French ports, including one in Djibouti, the location of China's sole overseas military installation.

5) Economic Cooperation:

France is the 11th largest foreign investor in India, with a total FDI stock of USD 10,389 million from April 2000 to September 2022. With over 1,000 French businesses operating in India and doing business to the tune of USD 20 billion, the two nations' bilateral trade is currently valued at EUR 10.7 billion. In France, more than 200 Indian businesses are operating with a EUR 1 billion investment stock.

According to India Brand Equity Foundation, 39 of 40 companies listed on the French stock exchange are conducting their business operations in India. The signing of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) would significantly give an impetus to trade.

6) Climate Cooperation:

India and France have forged a strong partnership to tackle climate change and promote renewable energy and international cooperation for a sustainable future. India to get more Rafales? PM Modi likely to sign Rafale-Marine jets deal for navy during France visit

The year was 1984. Nearly half of all Indians lived in poverty. India was still seven years away from being a free-market economy. Internally, simmering tensions in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and Assam states were beginning to erupt.

Today’s fifth largest economy of the world was not in an aspirational shape about four decades ago. But Mithun Chakraborty-starrer ‘Disco Dancer’ (1982) was a big hit in the Soviet Union with reportedly 120 million tickets sold.

Then on one remarkable day in the spring of 1984, the then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi appeared on state broadcaster Doordarshan. Over the satellite link emerged Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian person in space, who began speaking from a Soviet spacecraft. Putin’s actions in Ukraine do not make Indians anti-Russia. Here’s why

Indian Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra is set to travel to Sri Lanka in the coming week to make arrangements for President Ranil Wickremesinghe's visit to New Delhi on July 20, as reported by the Daily Mirror.

This visit will mark President Wickremesinghe's first official trip to India since assuming office last year. Notable individuals accompanying the president on the visit include Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda, Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera, Foreign Affairs Minister Ali Sabry, and Chief of President's Staff Sagala Ratnayake.

During the visit, President Wickremesinghe is expected to engage in bilateral discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Sri Lanka's political situation remains uncertain, as President Wickremesinghe has yet to call for a general election and honour the mandate given to Gotabaya Rajapaksa until November 2024. Meanwhile, the country's economic situation likely needs some more time for improvement, especially with the upcoming release of the second tranche of a USD 2.9 billion loan package from the IMF at the end of this year, reported the Hindustan Times.

Net debtor status and external liabilities

Sri Lanka continues to be a net debtor country with substantial external liabilities and depleted external assets.

According to an IMF report, the country's net external liabilities significantly increased from an average of 51 per cent of GDP during 2017-2018 to 74 per cent of GDP in the third quarter of 2022.

This rise was mainly due to a surge in gross external liabilities, which increased from 64 to 86 per cent of GDP, driven by high government borrowing and significant depreciation of the rupee, particularly in 2022.

Gross external assets declined from 15 per cent of GDP in 2019 to 11.7 per cent of GDP in 2022.

Foreign Direct Investment accounted for approximately 25 per cent of the external liabilities, while other investments such as debt portfolios and bank loans accounted for about 60 per cent.

The government holds the majority share of the total external debt liabilities, making up 70 per cent.

In his address to his counterparts from China and India and other members of the SCO virtually on Tuesday, Putin pitched for trading in local currencies, arguing that more than 80 per cent of trade between Chinese and Russian people was in roubles and yuan, and urged other SCO members to follow the same process.

“We do not see the SCO as an extended neighbourhood, but an extended family. Security, economic development, connectivity, unity, respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, and environmental protection are the pillars of our vision for SCO,” he said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed to resist the Western sanctions imposed on the country and called for trading in local currencies at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit. In his address to his counterparts from China and India and other members of the SCO virtually on Tuesday, Putin pitched for trading in local currencies, arguing that more than 80 per cent of trade between Chinese and Russian people was in roubles and yuan, and urged other SCO members to follow the same process. "Russia is confidently resisting and will continue to resist external pressure, sanctions and provocations," the Russian leader said during a televised address to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). Making his first public appearance since the short-lived coup attempt by Wagner forces, Putin said, "I would like to thank my colleagues from the SCO countries who expressed support for the actions of the Russian leadership to protect the constitutional order and the life and security of citizens." He also welcomed Russian ally Belarus's application to become a permanent member of the SCO next year.
