<p>A team of scientists led by researchers from the University of Hawaii has found that high energy electrons from the Earth may be responsible for formation of water on Moon. The scientists used remote sensing data from India's Chandrayaan-1 lunar mission.</p>

<p>As reported by the Press Trust of India, the scientists have found that these electrons in the Earth's plasma sheet are contributing to the weathering process on the Moon.</p>

<p>Weathering refers to breaking down or dissolving of rocks and minerals. Weathering normally takes place on Earth as well.</p>

<p>The team's research has reportedly been published in the journal Nature Astronomy. The study says that the electrons may have helped in formation of water on the Moon.</p>

<p>The researchers have said that knowing the concentrations and distributions of water on the Moon is extremely important to understand formation and evolution of Moon. The study may also pave way to provide water resources for future human exploration.</p>

Data from Chandrayaan-1 indicates electrons from Earth help form water on Moon

A study reveals that Apollo 17's left-over lunar module is causing tiny moonquakes on the lunar surface. The study was led by researchers from the California University of Technology.

Is Apollo 17's left-over tech causing moonquakes on the lunar surface?

<p>The Moon, often considered a stepping stone to Mars, is a repository of vast resources crucial for modern technology. However, human presence on the lunar surface has been limited since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. With the ambitious Artemis Programme led by NASA aiming to establish a lunar outpost by 2030, the necessity for a reliable energy source on the Moon has become paramount, particularly in regions where temperatures can plummet to an astonishing -248°C.</p>

<p>In a recent development, scientists at Bangor University in the UK have devised miniature nuclear fuel cells, each no larger than a poppy seed, capable of generating the energy required to sustain life in such an extreme environment, as reported by BBC.</p>

<p>The Bangor University research team collaborated with prominent entities including Rolls Royce, the UK Space Agency, NASA, and the Los Alamos National Laboratory in the US. Together, they embarked on the project of creating a power source suitable for lunar living conditions.</p>

<h2><strong>Introducing the 'trisofuel'</strong></h2>

<p>At the heart of this&nbsp;initiative lies a diminutive nuclear fuel cell, aptly named Trisofuel. This innovation has the potential to fuel a micro nuclear generator, engineered by Rolls Royce. To validate its feasibility, the Trisofuel is currently undergoing rigorous testing, emulating the strenuous conditions of space travel. This thorough evaluation aims to prepare the Trisofuel for deployment within a lunar base by the target year of 2030.</p>

<p>Remarkably, the generator itself is a portable device, comparable in size to a small car or even something pocket-sized, offering exceptional adaptability for lunar missions.</p>

<p>Professor Simon Middleburgh, a leading authority in Nuclear Materials and Co-director of the Nuclear Futures Institute at Bangor University, who spoke to the BBC, expressed his enthusiasm about this project.</p>

<p>He stated, "This project will harness the expertise in nuclear fuels which we have within the Nuclear Futures Institute and apply it to one of the most exciting applications possible: space exploration."</p>

A man in West Bengal had promised the Moon to his wife before they got married. On her first birthday after the wedding, Sanjay Mahato went on to buy a "plot of Moon land" for Rs 10,000 to gift his wife.

Bengal man gifts wife piece of land on Moon after Chandrayaan-3 success

<p>A man from India's West Bengal&nbsp;decided to fulfill a promise he made to his wife before they got married. Sanjay Mahato had pledged to "bring the Moon" to her, and on her first birthday after their wedding, he made good on that promise. He purchased a "plot of Moon land" worth Rs 10,000 (around $120) to gift to his wife, as reported by India Today.</p>

<p>Mahato found his inspiration for this unique gift after the success of the Chandrayaan-3 mission. He believed that he could, in some way, fulfill his promise of bringing the Moon to his wife,&nbsp;by purchasing a piece of lunar land. Mahato sought assistance from Luna Society International to make this&nbsp;a reality.</p>

<h2><strong>The lunar purchase</strong></h2>

<p>"I bought one acre of land on the Moon for her," Mahato told India Today.&nbsp; The entire process took about a year to complete, and he received a registration paper that bore the label "Registered claim and deed for lunar property."</p>

<p>The Moon has played a significant role in Mahato and his wife's love story. They often sit in their garden, gazing at the Moon, and sharing romantic moments. Given the Moon's special place in their hearts, Mahato felt that there couldn't be a more fitting gift for their first birthday celebration as a married couple.</p>

<p>While private ownership of outer space is not practically possible at this time, it hasn't deterred various gifting websites from selling "pieces of moon land" and providing "certification" to buyers. This practice has gained popularity among those who wish to own a symbolic piece of the Moon.</p>

Japan poised to make giant leap in its space endeavours, to launch 'moon sniper' on Sept 7

The Pragyan rover was proudly rolled out off the lander for exploration shortly after the Vikram Lander's successful soft descent on August 23 near the Moon's south pole, as seen in photographs and videos published by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The fact that the lander and rover both depend on sunlight for operation, however, makes the project interesting. Their operational window thus coincides with the lunar day, which is roughly similar to 14 days on Earth. Watch to find out more.

What are days and nights like on the moon?

After a successful hop test on the Moon last month, India space agency ISRO has shared another update with the world - Chandrayaan 3's Vikram Lander and rover has been put to bed but this hibernation won't last for long.

<p>An exciting celestial event is set to unfold as the Moon and Jupiter come together in the night sky on Monday (September 4). Both, the Earth's natural satellite and the largest planet in our solar system, will be up close and one can witness this too. As per Space.com, both the Moon and Jupiter will be situated within the Aries constellation during this close approach and conjunction. The Moon will be in its waning gibbous phase. At this phase, 64 per cent of its lunar surface will be bathed in sunlight. Meanwhile, Jupiter will be remarkably close to the Moon, within a mere 3-degree separation, which is roughly equivalent to the width of two fingers held at arm's length.</p>

<h2><strong>How can you watch?&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>From New York City, this cosmic rendezvous will be visible starting shortly after they rise above the eastern horizon at around 10 pm EDT (0200 GMT) and will continue until just before they dip below the horizon at approximately 11:52 am EDT (1552 GMT) on Tuesday (September 5). Jupiter will position itself just above and to the right of the moon during this event.</p>

<h2><strong>Conjunction</strong></h2>

<p>This celestial alignment not only marks a close approach but also a conjunction, where the two celestial bodies share the same celestial longitude in the sky, known as right ascension.</p>

<p>In terms of brightness, on Monday (September 4), the Moon will shine with a magnitude of -12.3, while Jupiter will have a magnitude of -2.7 (lower or negative values indicate brighter objects).</p>

<p>Consequently, the Moon will outshine Jupiter in the night sky and appear significantly larger due to its proximity to Earth. Jupiter, despite its massive size, will be dimmer in comparison.</p>

<p>While the Moon dominates the night sky during the close approach, it's important to note the vast size difference between the two.</p>

<p>Jupiter boasts a width of approximately 89,000 miles (143,000 km), making it 11 times larger than Earth. The Moon, with a diameter of about 2,200 miles (3,500 kilometres), is a fraction of Jupiter's size.</p>

<p>To span Jupiter's equator, it would take at least 44 Moons lined up.</p>

An exciting celestial event is set to unfold as the Moon and Jupiter come together in the night sky on Monday (September 4). Meanwhile, Jupiter will be remarkably close to the Moon, within a mere 3-degree separation, which is roughly equivalent to the width of two fingers held at arm's length. How can you watch? From New York City, this cosmic rendezvous will be visible starting shortly after they rise above the eastern horizon at around 10 pm EDT (0200 GMT) and will continue until just before they dip below the horizon at approximately 11:52 am EDT (1552 GMT) on Tuesday (September 5). Jupiter will position itself just above and to the right of the moon during this event. Conjunction This celestial alignment not only marks a close approach but also a conjunction, where the two celestial bodies share the same celestial longitude in the sky, known as right ascension. Also Read | Microsoft's WordPad, launched in 1995, set to be removed from Windows In terms of brightness, on Monday (September 4), the Moon will shine with a magnitude of -12.3, while Jupiter will have a magnitude of -2.7 (lower or negative values indicate brighter objects). Consequently, the Moon will outshine Jupiter in the night sky and appear significantly larger due to its proximity to Earth. Jupiter, despite its massive size, will be dimmer in comparison. While the Moon dominates the night sky during the close approach, it's important to note the vast size difference between the two. Also Read | Convicted Proud Boys member claims Trump will pardon him in 2024 Jupiter boasts a width of approximately 89,000 miles (143,000 km), making it 11 times larger than Earth. The Moon, with a diameter of about 2,200 miles (3,500 kilometres), is a fraction of Jupiter's size. To span Jupiter's equator, it would take at least 44 Moons lined up. Jupiter's impressive moons Jupiter is home to some moons that surpass not only our moon but also some of the solar system's planets in size. Days after Chandrayaan-3's successful moon landing, the Vikram Lander has "soft-landed" on the lunar surface again.

The ambitious first mission to study the Sun has been launched by the Indian Space Research Organization. The Aditya L1 mission was due to launch on Saturday from Sriharikota's Satish Dhawan Space Center and travel for four months to Lagrange Point 1.

Aditya-L1: India successfully launches its first mission to the Sun

<p>It is the rocket that marked India's foray into the elite league of space-faring nations and continues to make the country's flag fly high as a commercial launch service provider. India's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) now heads into its 30th year of service. First launched in September 1993, the PSLV vehicle gradually went on to earn the title of India's workhorse rocket.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In its stellar operational life thus far, this four-staged rocket has made history for India by successfully launching India's maiden Moon Orbiter Chandrayaan-1, its maiden Mars Mission Mangalyaan and now is all set to launch India's maiden mission to study the Sun - Aditya-L1. It is very rare that a rocket serves for 30 years and undertakes three first-of-its-kind missions.</p>

<p>Given the rate at which re-usable rocket technology, clean-burning fuels, low-cost launch options and modern manufacturing processes are evolving, it is indeed a marvel that PSLV holds on amid the global competition. ISRO Chief Dr S Somnath also mentioned the impending retirement of PSLV after 30 more launches.</p>

<p>He reasoned that the manufacturing process was old, the rocket was based on 1980s technology with further cost reduction not possible and the vehicle used toxic and carcinogenic fuels.</p>

<p>For ISRO, PSLV is as robust as a rocket gets. In its 58 launches to date, the rocket has delivered successful outcomes in 55. That's a whopping 95 per cent success rate and is rivalled by very few rockets in the world. India's own LVM3 rocket, the biggest and most powerful to be built by ISRO has so far delivered successes in all seven of its missions and enjoys a 100 per cent success rate. However, in terms of number of missions undertaken and the versatile roles it has played, the PSLV stands taller than its muscular cousin, the LVM3.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While PSLV has remained the mainstay of ISRO for lofting commercial satellites, the LVM3 rocket also joined the commercial club from October 2022 onwards and lofted 36 internet-beaming satellites of the UK-based OneWeb. Over the years, the PSLV rocket has launched well over 350 satellites for Indian and foreign customers, while the LVM3 has launched 72 customer satellites, all belonging to OneWeb.</p>

<p>In 2017, India created a world record using its PSLV rocket by placing 104 satellites in orbit, the highest-ever to be launched in a single mission. This record remained unbeaten until 2021, when the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, which is exponentially more powerful and capable than the humble PSLV managed to loft 143 satellites into orbit, in a single go.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At the heart of the PSLV or its core stage is the Vikas engine, an Indo-French engine powered by Earth-storable liquid fuels. This engine is a crucial part of Indian spacefaring rockets and is a living and long-lasting testimony of the India-France space cooperation. The Vikas engine finds place in the GSLV rocket and the LVM3 rocket and is also the most powerful yet, Earth-storable liquid fuelled engine of ISRO.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Titled Aditya-L1, the craft will cover a distance of 1.5 million kilometres in space, in a span of approximately 120 days. The craft will be travelling to Lagrange Point 1 or L1, a vantage point from where it would have an unobstructed view of the sun.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While this is a mission to study the sun, it would be travelling only one per cent of the Earth-Sun distance, unlike the Solar Parker Probe from NASA that flew a few million miles in the vicinity of the Sun. Quake on Moon? Chandrayaan-3's Vikram Lander detects 'natural' seismic movement

A glob of plasma and radiation that was blasted by an unexplained explosion on the sun's far side is expected to crash with Mars. According to researchers, if the solar storm strikes the Red Planet, it may cause weak UV auroras and even shred a portion of the Martian atmosphere.

India scripted history by becoming the first country to reach the south pole of the moon. Indian prime minister Narendra Modi congratulated ISRO chairman S Somanath and his entire team from Johannesburg, South Africa where he was attending the BRICS summit. The spacecraft landed on the unexplored south pole days after Russia's luna-25 failed. Chandrayaan-3 is expected to remain functional for two weeks, running experiments including, a spectrometer analysis of the lunar surface's mineral composition. The moon rover- Pragyan exited the spacecraft on the 24th of August to begin its exploration. ISRO's record for frugal innovation will be tested by upcoming missions, including a project to study the sunset to launch next month and a plan to put astronauts in orbit.
