<h2><strong>About the Chandrayaan-3 mission</strong></h2>

<p>On July 14, India launched its third lunar mission from Satish Dhawan Space Station in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh’s Sriharikota, where it began its 3,84,000 kilometres from Earth to the Moon. In about 40 days Chandrayaan-3&nbsp;is expected to make a soft landing at 5:47 pm (local time) on August 23.<br />

Chandrayaan-3 is expected to reach the Moon’s South Pole. which is a less explored location that could potentially yield valuable scientific data, for a soft landing with a lander and a rover. If successful, India would be the fourth nation after the United States, Russia and China, to perform a soft landing on the Moon.&nbsp;</p>

<p>ISRO’s Chandrayaan-3 is meant to land a few hundred kilometres away from the Moon’s south pole – a region that has also largely remained unexplored, owing to the near-nil sunlight illumination there. However, it is believed that many mysteries of the Moon could be unravelled by performing in-situ probing of this region.&nbsp;<br />

<br />
In case things don’t go as planned and there is a delay in the landing, ISRO also has the option of allowing the spacecraft to circle the Moon and carry out the landing at the break of the following lunar dawn (which could be almost a month after the intended landing date of August 23).</p>

Chandrayaan-3: What makes soft-land on the moon such a difficult task?

<p>The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) posted a breathtaking snap of Saturn and its moon Mimas on Instagram. This awe-inspiring photograph was taken from a distance of 5,76,000 miles (9,27,000 km) by the Cassini spacecraft and has left space enthusiasts spellbound.</p>

<p>The pictures of Saturn and its distant moon have captivated netizens who have left a barrage of comments on the social media post.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The image shared by NASA presents a magnificent view of Saturn's grandeur, capturing not only the gas giant itself but also its majestic rings.&nbsp; In addition, the picture also features one of Saturn's distant moons gazing upon the cosmic spectacle from afar.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Cassini's voyage through Saturn's system allowed it to study the planet's atmosphere, magnetosphere, moons, and rings, revealing astonishing insights into the mysteries of this celestial wonderland.</p>

<h2><strong>Saturn's mysteries unveiled</strong></h2>

<p>As can be seen from the intriguing pictures, Saturn is similarly tilted much like Earth. The planet experienced seven Earth-year-long seasons on its ringed surface. Such subtle yet fascinating details make Saturn a celestial marvel.</p>

<p>Accompanying the Cassini spacecraft on its cosmic journey was the Huygens lander probe, NASA wrote in the post caption.&nbsp;</p>

<p>With collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Italian Space Agency (ASI), Huygens achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the first human-made object to land on a world in the distant outer solar system. &nbsp;</p>

<p>"ESA's Huygen's probe was designed to study the smog-like atmosphere of Saturn's largest moon Titan as it parachuted to the surface. It also carried cameras to photograph the moon's surface. Huygen's traveled to Saturn aboard NASA's Cassini orbiter," NASA said in a website post.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It touched down on Saturn's largest moon, Titan, in 2005, unearthing valuable information about the gas giant and its many moons. "Titan may be one of the best places to search for life in our solar system," NASA wrote in the Instagram post. \</p>

<h2><strong>Netizens left mesmerised&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Since NASA uploaded the captivating picture, it has garnered overwhelming attention. The post amassed over 850,000 likes and drew numerous comments from enthralled viewers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Scientists have proposed a reset of the lunar clock after re-evaluating impact craters on the moon's surface, indicating that certain features, such as the iconic "Man in the Moon" formation, could be 200 million years older than previously believed.</p>

<h2><strong>How would this clock reset impact everything we know about the moon?</strong></h2>

<p>As per a report in Space.com, the new dating system has implications on humanity’s understanding of the evolution of the lunar surface. It will also shed light on the early history of the solar system, that is characterised by heavenly bodies like the moon and Earth being subjected to intense bombardment by space rocks.</p>

<p>The research involved a reassessment of two methods of dating the lunar surface: counting the number of impact craters caused by space rocks and analysing moon rocks collected by the Apollo missions.</p>

<p>While traditionally, these methods have yielded different results, particularly for the ages of heavily cratered and mountainous lunar highlands, to “reconcile” the differences, the researchers correlated individually dated Apollo samples with the number of craters in their respective areas.</p>

China unveils plans to land astronauts on the moon by 2030

All eyes are set on the launch of Chandrayaan-3. ISRO will go ahead with the launch on July 14. World aspires for the success of India's ambitious moon mission. The US is keen to reap the advantages of this historic lunar voyage.

How the US plans to benefit from India's Chandrayaan-3

India aims for the moon again. ISRO is all set for the launch of Chandrayaan-3. The Chandrayaan-3 is set for a launch on July 14. However, there is a slight change in plans. Instead of a success-based design like in Chandrayaan-2. ISRO opts for a failure-based design. But what's the reason?

Why ISRO opted for a 'failure-based design' in Chandrayaan-3

The heads of U.S. and UK command chiefs have raised fears that China is planning to mine the moon for minerals. How does China plan to do it? Molly Gambhir tells you more.

Gravitas: Is China planning to drill the Moon?

NASA's search for life on the moon is reaching new heights. From probing water & oxygen on the lunar surface. To locating iron & rare earth metals. NASA is looking to develop resources on the moon. According to a scientist, NASA has already taken steps toward excavating moon soil in 2032.

Why is NASA eyeing lunar mining trials within the next decade?

<p>National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is looking to develop resources on the moon. This will initially include oxygen and water and eventually may expand to iron and rare earth. The US space agency has already taken steps towards excavating moon soil in 2032, said scientists on Wednesday (June 28).</p>

<p>As part of its Artemis mission, NASA is planning to return American astronauts to the moon by 2025. The crew would include a woman and a person of colour. The agency plans to learn from the moon mission in order to facilitate a trip to Mars.</p>

<p>An important part of the mission is advancing commercial opportunities in space. NASA is looking to quantify potential resources including energy, water and lunar soil as a goal to attract commercial investment, said Gerald Sanders, who is a rocket scientist at NASA.</p>

<p>He said that developing access to resources on the moon will be key to cutting costs and developing a circular economy.</p>

<p>"We are trying to invest in the exploration phase, understand the resources... to (lower) risk such that external investment makes sense that could lead to development and production," he told a mining conference in Brisbane.</p>

<p>"We are literally just scratching the surface," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Test drill rig</strong></h2>

<p>At the end of the month, NASA will send a test drill rig to the moon. By 2032, it plans a larger-scale excavation of moon soil and a pilot processing plant.</p>

<p>It is expected that the first customers would be commercial rocket companies. These would use the moon's resources for fuel or oxygen.</p>

<p>Samuel Webster, an assistant director at the agency said that the Australian Space Agency is involved in making a semi-autonomous rover which will take samples of the lunar soil during a NASA mission as early as 2026.</p>

<p>The rover will demonstrate how the lunar soil will be collected, the soil that contains oxygen in form of oxides.</p>

<p>Using separate equipment sent to the moon with the rover, NASA will aim to extract that oxygen, he said.</p>

<p>"This ... is a key step towards establishing a sustainable human presence on the moon, as well (as) supporting future missions to Mars," he said at the conference.</p>

NASA aims for lunar mining by next decade

Here, we bring you the news that is trending across WION's social media platforms-Humans are curious to find life outside planet Earth and they launch new programs and missions for the same. But the long hunt for extraterrestrials in our solar system just got a massive boost as according to the scientists, a Moon of Saturn has everything needed for life.

`Stunning discovery` says life possible on Saturn`s moon

Compared to Earth, the moon is a barren land. It is devoid of flowing water, wispy clouds and any signs of life. However, a scientist from NASA thinks that there's more to the moon than just a barren land. NASA planetary scientist Prabal Saxena has proposed that the lunar South pole may harbour conditions suitable for microbial life.

NASA scientist admits that the Moon 'might already have life on it'

<p>People in different parts of the world were treated to the wonderful sight of the stunning Strawberry Moon which glistened in the night sky over the weekend.<br />

As per NASA, the Maine Farmers' Almanac started publishing full moons' Native American names in the 1930s. The June full moon was linked to Native American tribes like the Algonquin.<br />

<p>Saturn's rings are mad beautiful. And the fact that they can be observed with basic stargazing equipment has meant that astronomers even in the medieval times were able to observe them with not-so-advanced technology of the times. But there's more to Saturn than just rings. The most unique planet in our solar system has a large number of satellites one of which, has long piqued scientific interest for search for extraterrestrial life.</p>

<p>Enceladus, one of Saturn's satellites is unique in a way that it has an icy surface. The laws of physics say that where there is ice, there are very high chances of water underneath. And where there is water, there is life, at least as per our most conventional scientific understanding.</p>

<p>Drilling ice on earth is challenging enough, how to do that on a surface that's literally millions of kilometres away? NASA has a unique solution.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The space agency is planning to send a snake-like robot to check out surface of Enceladus.</p>

<p>The snake-robot has a long winding name. Exobiology Extant Life Surveyor (EELS). It is being developed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).</p>

<p>According to JPL , EELS is a "snake-like, self-propelled robot". It is made of segments with "first-of-a-kind rotating propulsion units". These will help it to grip surfaces and even move underwater.</p>

<p>This robotic snake is 16-foot long and weighs 220 pounds. At its head, EELS has machinery that'll help it map Enceladus in 3D. It'll send real time images. The body of EELS will have a payload that'll enable scientists to measure the sub-surface pressure.</p>

<p>JPL is currently testing the robot. As per media reports, the robot underwent testing at Athabasca Glacier in Canada's Jasper National Park.</p>

<p>"We are early in the project, but it is achievable in our lifetime," EELS Deputy Project Manager Rachel Etheredge said last year, as quoted by CBS News. "...It's an ambitious collaboration, and we're motived by the shared excitement we have for this concept, and the potential science we could gather with EELS."</p>

<p>"The EELS system is a mobile instrument platform conceived to explore internal terrain structures, assess habitability and ultimately search for evidence of life," NASA says of its development. "It is designed to be adaptable to traverse ocean-world-inspired terrain, fluidised media, enclosed labyrinthian environments and liquids."</p>

<p>Elon Musk owned-SpaceX will be launching its powerful Spaceship spacecraft in the coming six to eight weeks, the billionaire informed during a Twitter Spaces chat on Saturday. The April 20 liftoff of Starship, which can take astronauts to the Moon and back, did not end in the way desired as it exploded minutes after liftoff in a test flight.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Musk, during the Twitter chat, said 30 out of 33 engines of Starship worked perfectly and reached 'full thrust', which was perhaps the reason the concrete launchpad was destroyed. Musk added that the pad damage was "quite small"&nbsp;and that it would take "six to eight weeks" to get the infrastructure prepared for another launch.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The outcome was roughly in (line) with what I expected and, maybe slightly exceeded my expectations,” said the SpaceX CEO.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The vehicle structural margins appear to be better than we expected. As we can tell the vehicle is actually doing somersaults towards the end and still staying intact."</p>

<h2><strong>FAA approval required</strong></h2>

<p>However, SpaceX is not allowed a relaunch opportunity until the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) completes its review that “will determine the root cause of the event and identify corrective actions the operator must implement to avoid a recurrence".&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We aren’t going to speculate on timelines. Safety will dictate the<strong>&nbsp;</strong>timeline," stated the FAA.</p>

Elon Musk owned-SpaceX will be launching its powerful Spaceship spacecraft in the coming six to eight weeks, the billionaire informed during a Twitter Spaces chat on Saturday. The April 20 liftoff of Starship, which can take astronauts to the Moon and back, did not end in the way desired as it exploded minutes after liftoff in a test flight. Musk, during the Twitter chat, said 30 out of 33 engines of Starship worked perfectly and reached 'full thrust', which was perhaps the reason the concrete launchpad was destroyed. Musk added that the pad damage was "quite small" and that it would take "six to eight weeks" to get the infrastructure prepared for another launch. “The outcome was roughly in (line) with what I expected and, maybe slightly exceeded my expectations,” said the SpaceX CEO. "The vehicle structural margins appear to be better than we expected. As we can tell the vehicle is actually doing somersaults towards the end and still staying intact." FAA approval required However, SpaceX is not allowed a relaunch opportunity until the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) completes its review that “will determine the root cause of the event and identify corrective actions the operator must implement to avoid a recurrence". “We aren’t going to speculate on timelines. Safety will dictate the timeline," stated the FAA. WATCH | SpaceX's Starship rocket lifts off for inaugural test flight × After the explosion, SpaceX stated, “Vehicle experienced multiple engines out during the flight test, lost altitude, and began to tumble." Meanwhile, Musk congratulated employees and said he’s optimistic about the programme’s progress. Many called it Musk's way of turning setbacks into 'successful failures.' SpaceX asks people to contact about debris After the launch, the debris from the rocket has been washing up on the shores surrounding the Starbase launch facility in Boca Chica, Texas. SpaceX has asked people not to handle or retrieve the debris of the Starship, and contact the company on its hotline at 1-866-623-0234 or email the information to recovery@spacex.com. "Teams are actively monitoring both message boxes and will ensure the notification is handled appropriately. We are unable to respond to every message received, but our teams will reach out as appropriate," SpaceX officials wrote. "If you have concerns about an immediate hazard, please contact your local law enforcement agency." ALSO READ | Found a piece of Starship? 'City killer' asteroid comes closer than Moon, Earth remains unharmed

<p>An asteroid with around&nbsp;200-feet diameter, said to be big enough to wipe out an entire city, will pass through Earth and the Moon’s orbit on March 25 while missing both, NASA has said.</p>

<p>The asteroid will pose no problems to both celestial bodies, but it will offer a chance for astronomers to study a space rock from just over 168,000 kilometres (100,000 miles) away.</p>

<p>While asteroids flying by Earth are common, NASA said that the one approaching the planet is so big that it is rare for a space rock of such size to come so close. They said that such a phenomenon happens only once a decade.</p>

<p>The asteroid, named 2023 DZ2, was first discovered in late February 2023 by astronomers at the observatory of La Palma, in the Canary Islands, Spain.</p>

<p>Scientists estimate its size somewhere between 130 feet and 300 feet (40 metres and 90 metres) in diameter. It’s part of the Apollo family of asteroids.</p>

<p>On Saturday, 2023 DZ2 will pass within 515,000 kilometres (320,000 miles) of the Moon and, several hours later, it will hover over the Indian Ocean at about 28,000 kph (17,500 mph).</p>

<p>“There is no chance of this ‘city killer’ striking the Earth, but its close approach offers a great opportunity for observations,” the European Space Agency’s planetary defence chief Richard Moissl said in a statement.</p>

<p>For astronomers with the International Asteroid Warning Network, this chance encounter with the “city killer” asteroid will provide valuable information on how to deal with them in the future, NASA said in a tweet.</p>

An asteroid with around 200-feet diameter, said to be big enough to wipe out an entire city, will pass through Earth and the Moon’s orbit on March 25 while missing both, NASA has said. The asteroid will pose no problems to both celestial bodies, but it will offer a chance for astronomers to study a space rock from just over 168,000 kilometres (100,000 miles) away. While asteroids flying by Earth are common, NASA said that the one approaching the planet is so big that it is rare for a space rock of such size to come so close. They said that such a phenomenon happens only once a decade. A newly discovered #asteroid named 2023 DZ2 will safely pass by Earth on Saturday at 100K+ miles away. 🌎 While close approaches are a regular occurrence, one by an asteroid of this size (140-310 ft) happens only about once per decade, providing a unique opportunity for science. — NASA Asteroid Watch (@AsteroidWatch) March 21, 2023 × The asteroid, named 2023 DZ2, was first discovered in late February 2023 by astronomers at the observatory of La Palma, in the Canary Islands, Spain. Scientists estimate its size somewhere between 130 feet and 300 feet (40 metres and 90 metres) in diameter. It’s part of the Apollo family of asteroids. On Saturday, 2023 DZ2 will pass within 515,000 kilometres (320,000 miles) of the Moon and, several hours later, it will hover over the Indian Ocean at about 28,000 kph (17,500 mph). “There is no chance of this ‘city killer’ striking the Earth, but its close approach offers a great opportunity for observations,” the European Space Agency’s planetary defence chief Richard Moissl said in a statement. For astronomers with the International Asteroid Warning Network, this chance encounter with the “city killer” asteroid will provide valuable information on how to deal with them in the future, NASA said in a tweet. NASA has prepared the Virtual Telescope Project to provide a live webcast of the close approach of the asteroid, which won’t enter our orbit until 2026.
